In the proposed method, the charges are elongated and arranged in one or more arrays. The orientation of each charge in an array, its velocity of propagation of explosion, and the velocity of propagation of vibration in the formation are such that, at an outlying location where vibration is to be reduced, the onset of vibration from explosion of the first negligibly small increment of each charge arrives a finite time before that from explosion of the last negligibly small increment of that charge. The charges of each array are fired in accurately-timed sequence, with the times between initiations chosen so that, at the outlying location, the onset of vibration from explosion of the last small increment of each charge, except the last charge, arrives a negligibly small increment of time before the onset of vibration from explosion of the first negligibly small increment of the succeeding charge. With such timing, vibration may be reduced at the widest range of locations by tilting the boreholes so that the terminal end of each charge is directly above or below the terminal end of the succeeding charge.

The Society of Explosives Engineers is an international organization of over four hundred members involved in the explosives industry, with most members being active in the United States. The regulations imposed by regulatory agencies on the explosives industry have drastic effects far beyond the industry. Since explosives are used in mining, manufacturing, construction, entertainment, and art, all phases of man's activities, including fundamental needs for survival, are affected by how efficient the industry uses explosives. We, as members of SEE, must be sincerely concerned with both the quantity and quality of government regulation, and this paper spells out some of the problems caused by regulations and offers a solution.

Modern blast engineering involves the use of modern technology to provide more efficient blasts. Through the use of improved measurement techniques more information can be obtained on many of the physical variables of a quarry rock face. By employing this information, a more efficient production shot can be designed and loaded. Along with improvements in production, greater safety and improved environmental impact can be achieved. This paper concerns the employment of modern blast engineering at a granite quarry in the Southeastern United States. The test period extended over a period of approximately six months, and this paper will show the results achieved in that time span.

ICI has developed a new electrical shotfiring system which has markedly improved safety features and operational advantages over existing initiating systems. The development of the 'Magnadet' Electric Detonator and the related product 'Magna' Primer were described in a paper presented at the 1981 S.E.E. Annual Conference. Since then the system has been adopted in many different applications and conditions around the world. The present paper describes these applications, the experience gained and the more recent developments which have taken place.

Heavy ANFO products made by mixing ANFO (or AN prills) with a relatively small amount of emulsion (typically 15-30 percent) have become very popular in recent years. They are less expensive than straight, sensitized emulsion and maintain the good shooting characteristics of ANFO but have higher bulk strengths. Their use, however, is generally limited to larger diameter, dry boreholes. Smaller diameter, wet-hole quarries have not been able to widely utilize this low cost bulk product.

In this paper, the author points out the need to beware of simple time correlations as proof of cause and effect when comparing building cracks and blasting operations. There is a need to be aware of the many other causes besides blasting which affect buildings. Some of these have histories of cyclic behavior; others have a long-term increasing effect on aging and deterioration, often with poorly defined time histories. Many are so strongly site specific that generic relationships are difficult to quantify.

In 1972 the Kentucky State Legislature enacted House Bill 625 which was known as the Kentucky Blasting Law. This law was enacted primarily to stop problems associated with surface mining, but when it was enacted all industries using explosives were included. The bill was assigned to the Department of Mines and Minerals which created a Division of Explosives and Blasting. At that time, this division only had regulations concerning blasting. One should make a distinction between blasting regulations and other explosive regulations. Blasting is the actual use of explosives, the control of the blasting operation, how much is used, at what distances to buildings, the yardage, and other actions associated with the detonating process, explosives regulations generally including safety to the personnel and the storage of explosives.

The results of an extensive literature review and field experiments regarding the effects detonation of high energy explosive have upon various aquatic organisms are reported. These results were used to modify regulatory permitting criteria in Texas. Three separate field experiments were conducted. In the first study, surface placed charges were used in a marine habitat. In the other two, the charges were placed in drilled holes. In one, which was in a freshwater environment, the drilled holes were filled with drilling mud after placement of the charges. In the second, which was in an estuarine environment the holes were allowed to sit for thirty days prior to detonation to permit natural back-filling to occur by water transported sediments. A variety of aquatic organisms held in wire cages were exposed to detonations. Immediate and long-term effects of the exposure were determined based on external and internal visual observations. Damage to aquatic organisms was found to be reduced by placing the explosives in drilled holes and back-filling the holes prior to detonation of the explosives.

Marginal detonation of explosives can produce more toxic fumes with higher nitrogen oxides (NOx) than normal detonation. In delay blasting, shock waves from borehole charge explosions can impact those delayed charges still remaining in the delay pattern. This can result in partial desensitization, whereupon the explosive does not misfire, but detonates in a weak unstable fashion releasing a different/unusual spectrum of gaseous reaction products.

In past years, the usual justification for underground mining of limestone has been the depth of the overburden, perhaps 100 feet thick or more. At our Okolona Quarry in suburban Louisville, Kentucky, the overburden is usually shallow -- it averages 8 to 10 feet in thickness. However, in July 1980, we began development of an underground limestone mine on that property which also includes surface mining operations.

The use of an ordinary VHS video camera and a four-head player can be an effective tool to analyze surface blasting. The necessary equipment can be purchased for under $1,300 and will allow frame by frame or slow motion viewing of a blast in 33.33 millisecond increments. Rock breakage, movement, and timing can be studied in high quality slow motion. These studies can result in improved blasts by showing things that the eye can miss in real time.

In many mining situations the energy released by an explosive is far too high and results in over fragmentation and excessive damage to the surrounding strata. Laboratory experiments have demonstrated that the shock energy of an explosive can be significantly reduced by surrounding it with an attenuating material such as a foam. The effect of this reduction in shock energy on fragmentation has been determined using model materials. A four fold reduction in the amount of minus 8mm material relative to an air decoupled charge of the same weight was obtained for a foam attenuator.
