The world's longest highway-tunnel -- the Aurland Tunnel in western Norway -- is scheduled to be opened in the year 2000. A project to build a main highway between Oslo and Bergen with no ferry connections was approved by the Norwegian Parliament in January 1995. Construction of the five-year blasting project was started by the Norwegian Highway Authority in mid-March 1995, with an expected completion date of November-December 1999.

A method for safe fracture of rock, concrete and other brittle solid material using dynamic water pressure by explosion is provided. The propagation of the pressure is studied with Allievi water hammer theory. Wave equation and velocity formulas of the pressure propagation are shown. The dynamic water pressure is tested in the lab. The propagation of the pressure is simulated by MMIC-2D. The results of fracturing rock in the lab and on a quarry are presented.

Various methods have been proposed over the past two decades to predict the borehole pressure in decoupled boreholes. In an effort to establish which characteristics best accomodate present day explosive effectiveness, a comparision has been made between two explosives. The first displays high detonation characteristics while the second produces gases which continue to fill the borehole and radial cracks for relatively long periods of time.

This paper summarizes blasting accident data for over a quarter of a century (1978-2004) for all types of surface and underground mining operations in the United States. Although many billions of pounds of explosives and blasting agent have been used by the mining industry, the accident safety record has improved significantly in the past 25 years. Over the past decade, approximately 5 billion pounds of explosives and blasting agents were used annually in the United States. Coal mining has been and continues to be the dominant user of blasting agents.

This paper describes a method of measuring continuous detonation rates using standard electronic parts, coaxial cable, and a data recorder such as an oscilloscope. Three six-volt lantern batteries or a DC supply power the electronics that cost less than $100. Included are means of showing low battery power, finding the proper voltage scale on the recorder, and test triggering of the recorder. Modifications of the circuit allow for use in the field to measure charges up to 57 meters and for use in the laboratory to measure short charges. The high resistance (8.709 Ohms/meter) coaxial cable is a mass produced, special order cable available commercially. The driver circuit delivers a constant current to the cable, and as the detonation shorts the cable, a change in circuit voltage occurs. Recording this voltage change over time allows determination of detonation rate resolute to the sampling speed of the recorder. An oscilloscope or personal computer with a data acquisition card can easily record the data for analysis. Detonation rates recorded in the laboratory using the coaxial cable and the Bureau of Mines's traditional probes are presented. The system accurately measured the detonation rates of ANFO confined in steel pipe, detonating cord, and unconfined high explosive.

It is a well-known industry fact that many mine sites around the globe experience blast holes that have elevated temperatures due to reactive ground, geochemical reactions, geomorphic reactions, sub level open fires, etc. It has been reported in many previous industry publications (White, Saputra et al) that elevated blast hole temperatures are a norm at many mine sites and are dealt with on an ongoing basis while the drill and blast process continues under elevated states of alert. The choice of explosives products including the type of detonator, primer, accessory, and bulk product all must be taken into consideration when loading blast holes where there is a known potential for elevated temperature conditions. It should also be noted that these elevated temperatures inside blast holes can be consistent throughout the blast hole length or vary in position within the blast hole depending on the mine conditions mentioned in the opening statement above. The risks associated with the loading of primers and bulk explosives in holes where elevated temperatures are present include: the ejection of the bulk explosives product, deflagration of the explosives during initiation of the blast or premature and uncontrolled initiation of a blast hole(s). This paper describes a unique and novel approach to the active monitoring of the temperature within blast holes with the application of electronic detonators with integrated temperature measuring (ITM) capabilities, deployed and demonstrated at a mine site in Mexico during January 2023 to March 2023. The deployment of ITM capable electronic detonators allows a user to monitor and record the real time temperature at multiple locations (e.g., toe, middle and collar) at each electronic detonator’s position within the blast hole, with the ability to react instantaneously to elevations in temperature reported. The measurement of the temperature can be for a single ITM electronic detonator, or simultaneous for an array of ITM electronic detonators, allowing for the potential for the data to be represented by a time/temperature/hole depth three-dimensional heat map. Changes in temperature at different borehole positions can vary, however, often the collar position is expected to be the most reactive due the combination of bulk explosive product and oxygen exposure, which can be confirmed with the application of the ITM electronic detonators. A mine site’s reaction to a measured elevated temperature within a blast hole can vary depending on the temperature measured and the change in temperature from the last measurement made. The study was found to produce real-time in-hole temperature information which was previously unobtainable without the introduction of another device. New and adaptive elevated temperature hole policies can be created and adapted proactively as real time information is received, leading to a safer mining operation.

In use, blasting powder is exploded by a spark from fuse, electric squib or miner’s squib, or by a primer of some high explosive, the last being employed only in heavy charges on open work. In mining, and sometimes in light charges on open work, blasting powder is made into cartridges by means of a paper tube or cylinder sealed at one end, which is known as the Du Pont tamping bag. Sometimes the paper cylinder is made by the miner by coiling a section of heavy paper, known as blasting paper, around a wooden pin, called a cartridge pin, and securing it with what is called blasting soap. The removal of the pin leaves a cylindrical cartridge open at one end, into which the powder is poured and the top folded and sealed with blasting soap.

The Porgera joint venture and Dyno Noble have commissioned a joint project to optimise the drill and blast operations to increase the overall profitability of the mine. One of the aims of this project is to increase the throughput of semi autogenous (sag) mill by optimising the blast fragmentation, The work done so far clearly indicates that significant improvements in sag mill throughput can be achieved by optimizing the blast fragmentation. This paper discusses the planning, implementation and results achieved so far in this project.

We have developed a method for predicting and controlling ground vibration from blasting using a rigorous scientific approach. The method is based upon the superposition of seismic waveforms generated by a single-hole free-face shot, recorded at seismographs deployed in an array that includes environmentally sensitlve locations. Waveforms generated by single-hole shots are shown to be reproducible. The waveforms for each of the sites are used to construct synthetic seismograms for delayed shots based upon linear superposition. A computer code systematically constructs the seismograms for the delayed shots, with incremental delays between holes of 1, 2, or 3 milliseconds (ms). A Fourier amplitude specs-rum is calculated for each synthetic seismogram and the spectra are plotted on a map in delay-frequency space, i.e., each row of the map represents the Fourier spectrum for a blast with a particular delay interval. Toxic fume concentrations from industrial mining explosives depend somewhat upon the type of rock (or other strata) confinement. Though traditional detonation theory disregards this influence, the work principal from thermodynamics reveals it, when the violent interactions that transpire within the rock blast are taken into proper account. Resolution of the work principle technique requires total thermodynamic equilibrium under constraint, so the nonequilibrium dynamics is rendered in that way, using an old trick from theoretical mechanics that revises the representation of forces. The rock pressure reduces to a four-component sum: the rock compressive strength and natural atmospheric pressure, as reckoned quasi-statically, and the gravitational influence and reversed inertial resistance, as reckoned dynamically. Tabulated specie concentrations and graphical trends reveal the dependency upon rock pressure, rock temperature and the fuel-oil percentage in ammonium nitrate mixtures (ANFO), used to illustrate the model. Rigid-wall test chambers have notable ullage (residual space), where rapid expansion influences the reaction quenching, yielding a fume spectrum unlike that for rock confinement; reported rock tests are therefore used for comparisons. For the thermodynamic regime where quenching occurs, seven concentrations are resolved, including carbon monoxide (CO) and total nitrogen oxides (NOX). Their trends yield inferences regarding the way unwanted charge desensitization from transitory hole-to-hole wave impact in conjunction with reduced rock pressure can yield nasty toxic fumes, the dark rusty cloud phenomenon!

Corrections are given for “A three parameter rock fragmentation distribution” by A.T. Spathis (Measurement and Analysis of Blast Fragmentation, Workshop hosted by 10th International Symposium on Rock Fragmentation by Blasting, New Delhi, India, November 25-29, 2012 pp. 73-86). Typographical errors in two equations for the uniformity index in the two versions of the original and modified Kuz-Ram model are corrected. It is noted that the modified equation in the original published paper of Cunningham also had the same typographical error. A corrected plot of the dependence of the uniformity index versus the burden to diameter ratio is given. These corrections do not affect the rest of the original published paper.

H3 Tunnelers recently excavated two conventional 48 foot diameter highway tunnels through the Halawa side of the Tran-Koolau Mountains on Oahu. The primary blast design challenge on this Job was minimizing overbreak In the alternating layers of pahoehoe and aa lava, clinker, end tuff. Two different excavation techniques were evaluated in the Halawa tunnels. The first method used drilling and blasting to excavate the tunnels to within one foot of their final perimeter. A roadheader, mounted on a backhoe, was then used to excavate the remaining foot of ground. The second method used conventional smoothwall blasting techniques, without any mechanical excavation. This paper describes the details and relative success of the two excavation methods tried in the Halawa tunnels.
