The Mongol-Russian Joint Mining and Processing Cu-Mo Corporation Erdenet signed a contract with BGRIMM for building a plant to produce 10,000 t/y multitype emulsion explosives by using BGRIMM emulsion explosives manufacturing technology. In order to ensure the realization this contract, we have done a series of studies on the design of technological process and the selection, layout of the production equipment, and made a success.

Blasting operations can use a bulk emulsion explosive (EE) with a formulation based on used oil as a replacement for refined fuel oil. The most commonly employed used oil for making EE is a mineral based used engine oil that passes an impurity content standard. It is known that not all types of used oil are easily incorporated into EE formulations. Impurities in used oil can disturb EE stability resulting in crystallization and phase separation and consequently led to poor detonation quality. In 2024, a poor blast result occurred at an Indonesian mine due to utilization of used oil that was not within specification. A research project conducted from February to April 2025 found that used transmission oil differs from used engine oil in hydrocarbon composition. Transmission oil contains more additives that affect EE stability due to polarity differences and the disruption of colloidal state stability. Lab tests including stress testing and crystal growth observation aided the development of a stable EE formulation based on used oil and used transmission oil. In mid-April 2025, blast evaluations were conducted using the EE that was formulated using used engine oil and used transmission oil. Measurements of velocity of detonation, fragmentation, and digging time, demonstrated high quality EE was produced. Application of used oil in EE revolutionized the capability of mining operations to improve blast sustainability and cleanliness. Through comprehensive research, robust testing, and effective supply chain management, it is possible to replace some portion of refined fuel oil with used oil without compromising blasting performance. The inclusion of used transmission oil broadens the overall used oil specification and increases the volume of recycled used oil available for blasting. The increased volume of used oil available can reduce the amount of waste generated by mining projects while maintaining operational efficiency.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation awarded PCL Civil Constructors the project to build a new visitor's center and parking lot structure at the Hoover Dam. The excavations for these structures present many blast design challenges. The visitor center, a 30 foot deep excavation was blasted in the Nevada side of the canyon wall, 600 feet above the existing power plant. This excavation also included a through-cut underneath the existing road that carries the traffic over the Dam between Nevada and Arizona.

A blast site incident has just occurred. Tensions are high, and, as the blaster, you’re in charge of the crisis at hand. Your mind is reeling, your thoughts frantic. The main areas of concern for you at the scene are to deal with immediate problems...aid the injured, take a head count, assess the damage, call emergency response, contact company headquarters, calm the neighbors, update your customer, and respond to the press on site. You feel as if all the bases have been covered...but, then again, have they? One of the biggest mistakes blasters and their companies can make is not including their Insurance carrier in the critical on-site accident procedures and emergency call list. Unfortunately, many companies believe that they are immune to the perils that can often, within a matter of minutes, create chaos that only happens to someone else.

Previous work by the Bureau of Mines to develop a test for determining the initiating strength of commercial detonators has been modified and extended. Recently reported results by the Bureau used a homogeneous liquid explosive to avoid the complicating effects of inhomogeneities; however, due to the belief that there may be essential differences between the initiation mechanisms of simple liquids and multi-phase mixtures and the fact that almost all commercial explosives are in the latter category, the experiments have been modified accordingly. The acceptor explosive is now a mixture of explosive-grade ammonium nitrate (AN) prills, methanol (MeOH) and nitromethane (NM). An additional change has been the use of the United Nations (UN) cap sensitivity test configuration in which the detonation witness is the degree of compression of a lead block, which is a quantitative measure of the response of the explosive. Results indicate that this mixture has sufficient range of sensitivities to be useful in comparing the strength of commercial electric detonators.

The scope of this paper is to examine the growth of safety in an individual and offer new goals in that development. The paper will examine the individual's natural growth and show how it parallels the individual in a safety environment. An individual's new goals for safety include more than the standard accident-free conditions. The new goal strives for a safer working environment where unsafe acts are eliminated through independent knowledge and an individual's growth of interdependency in safety related areas of concern. It will explain how this goal cannot be reached unless driven from the top down in an organization but empowered from the bottom up. Various reference or support organizations will be covered. These organizations deal with safety in mining and explosive use of manufacturing. Other support organizations exist but since this paper is "Back to Basics" only a few major groups will be covered.

This paper changes the section of copper of copper to aluminum adapter bar into aluminum plate covered one face or double face with copper coat, and changes the conductor material of knife switch, fuse box, plug and socket into steel plate covered one face or double face with copper plate, and manufactures the composite (two layers or three layers) metal plates by means of explosion welding with the plates installed horizontally. Introduced in this paper are the blasting designing technique, manufacturing process and the electrical performances of the explosion bonded products. Besides, this paper presents the designing and manufacturing technique of cumulative charges and their time detonating units for cutting off the retired nuclear submarine pipes. Experiments on cutting off the stainless steel pipes by cumulative flow and on the time detonation are made. Generally in Japan, since ANFO has easy handling and low-price, it is most used as industrial explosives. However, ANFO is very easy to dissolve in water, it is difficult to use under existence of water and the consumer have desired water-resistant ANFO which has perfect water resistance. Then, we have developed the Water-Resistant Granular Explosive (It is written as following WRGE.) in which the surface of the explosive was covered by waterproof film, so that WRGE is able to use in hole with water. We ran various performance tests about the WRGE developed in the laboratory. Consequently, WRGE has water resistance of over 6 hours, and it has been checked that a performance and handleability were equivalent to the conventional ANFO. Then, we carried out the field test in the consumption site, and did performance evaluation on an on-site level. As compared with ANFO, fragmentation (size and volume) and handleability are almost equivalent. However, some problems which the WRGE is not settled out smoothly in hole with water and need more time for loading were also clarified. We are going to continue some advanced improvements through field tests.

RBH Note: the following item is a little different than the usual, in that it shows how explosives were used in the past to assist in putting down holes for iron ore prospecting on the early Mesabi Range of Minnesota. The way explosives were used would not even occur to the modern explorationist, given the equipment available today. The reason for the great difficulty in putting down a hole was that the area was covered with debris from the great glaciers of the past (the same ones that carved out the Great lakes). This debris consisted of boulders, clay, sand, and any other imaginable mixture of materials.

The Bureau of Mines has developed computer software to study the effects of initiator scatter on all aspects of the blasting process. The software is useful because it is difficult to obtain actual initiator data, particularly the standard deviation which is needed to express initiator scatter. The new software is structured to allow blasters to answer the question: how precise must initiators be to insure a successful blast? Successful is defined statistically in terms of a confidence level. The software can be used with any possible design since there are no restrictions due to size or complexity.

After many years of research, ICI staff have developed a numerical modelling system for the study of detonator/primer/explosive configurations. Results from this work clearly identified that current primer designs were not as effective in delivering their energy potential as needed. Alternative designs were evaluated and several prototypes, all essentially spherical in shape, were built for testing. Results have shown a significant improvement in various aspects of primer performance, including omni-directional pressure transferral and increased energy release rates. Reliable, high performance priming of explosives is now achievable for a much wider application range.

The principal disturbances created by blasting in open pit mines are vibrations, air blast and fly rock. All of them, under some circumstances, caused damage to structures nearby and apart from this can be the source of permanent conflict with the inhabitations who live close to the operation. Therefore, prediction of ground vibration components is of great importance for the minimisation of the environmental complaints. This paper presents the result of ground vibration measurements induced by bench blasting realised at Can Open Pit Coal Mine located close to the residential area of Can town. Within the scope of this study, in order to predict peak particle velocity and determine the slope of the attenuation curve for this site, ground vibration components were measured for blast events during bench blast optimisation studies over a long period. During the study, while the parameters of scaled distance were recorded carefully, the ground vibration components were measured by means of two different types vibration monitors (White Mini-Seis and Instantel Minimate Plus Model) for 54 blast events. At the end of evaluation an empirical relationship with reasonable correlation was established between peak particle velocity and scaled distance for this site.
