Cationic flotation using alkylamines and their derivatives as collectors, and characterized by high selectivity of mineral particle separation, is finding ever growing industrial application. In recent years the industrial application has been initiated of new cationic collectors - alkylmorpholines. Efficiency of cationic surfactants operation as collectors is dependent upon their colloid and sorption properties and the availability of silicate .carbonate rock-forming mineral impurities in the ore, which sorb the cationic collector. Investigations have been carried out on the influence of frothers and organic depressors with various compositions upon physical-chemical and flotation properties of alkylamines and alkylmorpholines. On the basis of these investigations requirements for organic depressor were developed and new flotation reagents were proposed (V-1 frother and KS-MF depressor). The use of new reagents enables one to decrease considerably the consumption of expensive cationic collectors and to enhance the floatability of coarse mineral particles. Data of new reagents industrial application is presented. The reagents developed can be used for flotation processing of other ores.

"The particle size distribution characteristics of ground product can influence the quality of the classification overflow and the next beneficiation indexes in an ore concentrator. Usually, the size distribution of ground product is considered to be determined by that of new ball mill feed. However, based on large amounts of data from industrial grinding circuit surveys, this paper has clearly shown that the size distribution of ground product should be determined by the size characteristics from classification underflow unless the circulating load was small, because the new feed is an important component and occupy a dominant position of mixed ore from belt feed and classification underflow. On the other hand, the correlation coefficient of the size distribution between ground product and classification underflow can be more than 0.99 when the relevance principle and its method are used. Meanwhile, their P80 value also keeps a synchronous correlation. The greater the capacity of classification underflow is, the higher the correlation of size distribution between the ground product and the mixed feed is. Furthermore, the correlation coefficient of the size distribution between ground product and classification overflow which is from primary or secondary can be 0.96. It is another discovery that the correlation coefficient is related to the type of classifier. The coefficient of size distribution of overflow and underflow from hydrocyclone is superior to that of spiral classifier, which can explain the reason why the hydrocyclone is widely used to replace the spiral classifier in concentrator.INTRODUCTION It is well knows that ball mill circuits closed with cyclones or spiral classifier such as a primary grinding circuit, a secondary grinding circuit and SAB mill have become an industry standard. Which grinding process employed will be determined by the P80 value of ground products. When the primary closed circuit ball mill or SAB that it is different throughout between the two processes was employed, a grinding fineness with -200mesh under 68% will be available. However, the secondary grinding circuit with the fineness of -200mesh above 80% can be conducted. Of course, the grinding fineness is determined by the grain size characteristics of the mineral."

"The present study deals with copper losses in slag from copper smelting. Copper slag cooling at Aurubis Bulgaria is traditionally done in pits. A new type of slag-cooling is introduced in the site, involving cooling ladles. In a previous study, the ladle cooling process was studied in detail, showing an improvement in the recovery of copper in the slag after flotation. The main reason for better recovery of copper is the increased cooling time, which allows for the accumulation and aggregation of copper droplets. The effects of the newly introduced slag cooling process are studied using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Cooling in pits and in ladles is compared, based on copper droplet size, distribution and content. Specialized image processing software is employed on images taken with an optical microscope. The results are then compared with a similar technique, available in SEM software. The availability of phase-analysing image software in combination with electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy makes it possible to study the morphological properties, distribution and chemical composition of the copper droplets. The obtained results confirm the initial conclusions about size, distribution and composition of the copper-bearing particles. A large amount of copper particles is examined showing an obvious increase in their size from pit- to ladle cooling. The results show an increase in the average size of the droplets, which doubles from pit-cooling to ladle-cooling. There is a well-pronounced tendency of decrease of the percentage of droplets in the smallest fraction (<5 µm) in the ladle-cooled slag. In addition, the number of droplets in the larger fractions increases, compared to the ones in the pit-cooled slags. It is believed, that the developed methodology for analysis provides a relatively quick and reliable solution for comparison of the cooling rates in the slag. INTRODUCTION In the process of copper smelting and converting, iron-silicate slags are produced that contain various amounts of dissolved and entrained copper. Different physical and chemical techniques are employed for the valorisation of the remaining metals in the slag – magnetic separation, leaching, roasting, flotation, etc. According to Gorai et al (2003), about 2.2 tons of slag is produced per ton of metal. In 2016, about 20 million tons of copper have been produced globally (www.icsg.org). At an average of 0.5 percent copper content after treatment, these slags contain more than two hundred thousand tons of copper which is lost due to inefficient processing."

The issues of double refractory gold ores pressure oxidation were considered. It was demonstrated that along with chloride autoclave preg-robbing which has been studied there are other negative external and intra-autoclave processes resulting in gold losses. It was found that an ingress of even low concentrations of NaCN, ferrum(II) and ferrum(III) cyanide complexes, as well as thiocyanate compounds into the autoclave leads to decrease of gold recovery during further cyanidation in a "carbon in leach" process (CIL). Admixtures depressing recovery of gold can get into the autoclave together with water in the result of industrial accidents or due to peculiarities of recirculation of industrial water used for feed pulp preparation or with quench-water used for process temperature maintenance. In contrast to a chloride preg-robbing which occurs only at pressure oxidation of double refractory gold ores, cyanide preg-robbing starts in the autoclave feeding tank (so-called «upper» preg-robbing). Possible causes of cyanide autoclave preg-robbing and requirements to the quality of water supplied to autoclaving were discussed.

Thermal treatment of mineral ores can initiate thermal phase transformations which can affect either their activation or deactivation, subsequently influencing their ability to dissolve in a leaching reagent. The formation of rutile and hematite from ilmenite minerals, for example, has been suggested to occur through a series of reduction and segregation reactions. This process has been used in beneficiating low-grade weathered ilmenite ores to higher grade rutile. Despite decades of re-search, the mechanism of this process is not well understood, because dissolved intermediates are poorly crystalline and are difficult to quantify, with the exception of the final rutile products. Previous studies have shown that disrupted intermediate phases, by thermal treatment, are most susceptible to reagent attack and can often demonstrate ?activation? effects. In this study, synchrotron based X-ray diffraction method was used to investigate in-situ and in real-time the transformation of ilmenite minerals to rutile and hematite during calcination. The rate of formation and disappearance of specific Bragg peaks during the reaction and thermal decomposition of the mineral were used to derive an understanding of the solid-state reactions. The effects of the mineral transformation were validated by laboratory based batch calcination and leaching in sulphuric acid. The results suggest that transformation of major mineral phases occurs within of specific window of operation and thermal treatment appears to influence the extent of activation and leachability of ilmenite minerals.

Uranium plants are generally located quite far from conversion plants, resulting in high transport costs. One way of reducing such costs involves putting more uranium in each drum by increasing the final product?s bulk density, which can be achieved via mechanical compaction of the powder and/or improved precipitation. For most of its plants, AREVA has adopted the latter approach, involving a new precipitation process applicable to all kinds of yellowcake produced (via uranates, uranium peroxide, etc.) that achieves bulk density of 3 for soda uranate, for example, instead of the 1.5-2 density available via conventional processes. At present, this process is being undertaken on an industrial scale and will become the norm for precipitation processes at all AREVA U plants. In addition to producing dense yellowcake, the process also delivers a product with no fines, a spherical particle shape (which allows for high-quality powder flow) and superior post-precipitation filterability

"Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are an important constituent of waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE), and contain many electronic components with valuable, hazardous or both materials. Recycling of PCBs is an important subject not only from the treatment of waste but also from the recovery of valuable materials. Demand for rare earth metals is expected to accelerate because of their growing use in next generation high technologies. Since some of these metals are concentrated in a specific electronic component, for example, Ta in capacitors, a special and selective grinding such as parts detachment from the board is effective for the recycling of a part of rare metals. However, direct computer simulation method to investigate a comminution/detachment process of PCBs has not yet been established. In this study, our objective was revealing the mechanism of breakage phenomena in comminution / detachment process of PCBs using computer simulation. A special and selective grinding using an agitation mill promoted the removal of components from a PCB by detachment and was an effective method for the recovery of rare metals. Simulant PCBs on which some capacitors were solder-mounted were used for the comminution test using drum type mill with agitator. To describe this mechanism of the parts detachment process, a computer simulation using discrete element method (DEM) was conducted. Although only an indirect simulation using the spherical particle model was possible for part detachment and board breakage, the particle-based rigid body model could directly represent the behaviour of PCBs. Simulation results successfully corresponded to comminution experimental results."

"Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral compound composed of shiny flakes, resembling mica. Worldwide, vermiculite has been used in various industries since 1920. When heated to a high temperature, flakes of vermiculite expand several times their original size. The expanded vermiculite is a lightweight, fire-resistant, absorbent, and odorless material. These properties allow vermiculite to be used to make numerous products, as an additive, for example to potting soil, in agricultural, construction, horticultural and industrial applications, including pesticides, insulation, potting mixes, brake pads, sound deadening materials, fire protection, paints, sealants, insulating concrete and etc. Over recent years researchers have been looking for effective economic and environmental methods and solutions for fine technological waste utilization. As a result of vermiculite ore processing large quantities of fine waste dust are formed. Until now there has been no application for this waste product. Currently this waste product is stockpiled using valuable land space, and is a potential contaminant. The paper presents the results of a study on the possibility to obtain briquettes from fine vermiculite by-product. The particle size distributions, chemical and mineralogical compositions of vermiculite were determined. It was established that consolidation of vermiculite dust by methods of briquetting and its consequent application in agriculture as meliorants for physico-chemical treatment, improves soils aeration structure and properties."

The separation in gravity concentrators is based on the density difference between valuable and gangue minerals. In addition to density, many auxiliary parameters like particle size, shape, feed rate, pulp density etc. plays an important role in the separation. The performance efficiency of gravity units is largely based on the interference of such auxiliary parameters during separation. Many gravity concentrators are used for the beneficiation of cassiterite ores and performance of which are varying with different feed material, particle size and required enrichment from the unit. Selection of gravity units is generally based on laboratory testing and data collected from the previous experience. In the present investigation cassiterite ore collected from Uljin deposit, South Korea has been subjected to various gravity units like jig, spiral, and Knelson concentrator with the intension to pre-concentrate the ore. Second stage concentration was carried out using shaking tables. The article mainly summarizes performance evaluation methods employed for gravity concentrators. Selection of gravity circuit for the beneficiation of cassiterite was made on the basis of the recovery-grade curve, and Tromp curve methods. It is very important to improve the A/S of the bauxite to keep sustaining development of Chinese alumina industry. This article summarized the issues of several desilication technologies, which are named as normal flotation, reverse flotation and bi-flotation. Normal flotation has been got industrialization because of technologic advantages. The campaign experiment of reverse flotation which has principle advantage was carried out in 2004, and bi-flotation which is combined the advantages of both the normal flotation & reverse flotation has the most attractive future. The development of bauxite flotation will be focused on multi-utilization of bauxite by mineral process technology and corresponding equipment which satisfied with the flotation technology and reagent.

"The morphology of pellet feed is known to influence several properties of iron ore pellets, including drop number, compression strength and reduction properties. The effect of grinding method on the particle size, specific surface area and particle shape of an iron ore concentrate has been studied. Grinding methods considered were ball mill and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). 5 different samples (Blaine= 1800, 1900, 2000, 2100 and 2200 cm2g-1) were used to compare the size, shape and specific surface of particles for each grinding methods. Particle size was meticulously examined by sieve analysis, laser sizing and image analysis. In samples ground by ball mill, it has been observed that the fraction of particles <10µm increases from 39% to 46% as the Blaine number increases from 1800 to 2200 cm2g-1. For HPGR samples, corresponding figures are 41% and 49% respectively. It is evident that for samples ground by HPGR, the fraction of fine particles is higher than that of those ground in the ball mill. To measure the specific surface area of particles, Blaine and BET were used. A higher real surface area was observed from HPGR treatment in comparison to ball mill grinding, provided by a higher porosity, cracks, roughness and new surfaces. Shape factor of particles was determined using three descriptors: circularity, roughness, and aspect ratio. It was also observed that particles produced by HPGR were more elongated, less circular, and rougher than those processed by the ball mill. 1. INTRODUCTION Particle size and shape are important parameters that can significantly affect mineral processing plants and pelletizing plant performances (Brozek and Surowiak, 2007). It has also been proposed that green pellet quality is directly related to the amount of fine particles in a pelletizing plant (Dwarapudi et al., 2008; Umadevi et al., 2008; Gul et al, 2014; Van der Meer, 2015). Particle size distribution and specific surface area (SSA) are also key factors that can control the quality of green and fired pellets. Processing circuits generally reduce the fines fraction to lower than the required specific surface area (SSA). It is therefore necessary to regrind concentrates to produce suitable pellet feed for further treatment in the balling and firing steps [1, 2]. Two main methods are used for re-grinding of concentrate; high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and ball mill. Given the different forces used to reduce size in these methods, it is expected the shape of particles will be different (Pourghahramani and Forssberg, 2005)."

The main reason of flotation process fluctuations is mixing ores of various properties from various sections of a deposit. Other, also important reasons are changes in parameters of facilities of technological cycle, as well as properties of reagents applied. According to estimates, instability and non-optimized parameters of flotation owe 3% to 6% of valuable component losses. Without ore averaging systems flotation process is characterized by considerable fluctuations of all input, output and intermediate parameters. Stab One more way is optimizing the process, providing for determination and maintaining optimal parameters of the process. In these conditions application of various mathematic models does not allow controlling the process by the way of action on input parameters of the process with further precise reaching required values of output parameters. More effective is to be application of flotation models for solution of questions of choosing and optimizing of automatic control systems. The work presented examples of application mathematic model of flotation process for estimation of effectiveness and choice of parameters of automatic control system that reduces considerably a stage of preliminary studies in elaboration, designing and modernizing automatic control systems.

Beach Placer Ilmenite is an important source for production of titanium metal, titania slag and pigment grade titanium dioxide. Besides, these well known applications for which Ilmenite is mined and processed, there are other emerging processes that are being tried for obtaining highvalue products. Synthesis of Ilmenite based materials for varistor applications and direct electrochemical reduction of Ilmenite to produce ferrotitanium are two such attempts being discussed in this work. In this paper, recent efforts undertaken to study the electrical and magnetic characteristics are discussed. Ilmenite, FeTiO3, is one of the mixed-valence transition metalbearing minerals, inwhich Fe can be in two different oxidation states, Fe2+ and Fe3+.. Similarly, Ti can be in Ti3+ and Ti4+.Ilmenite is inherently suitable for making Varistors, which are devices, used for limiting the transient voltage surges in a circuit. Varistors produced from Ilmenite can withstand harsh environments seen in nuclear reactors and outerspace. Electrochemical reduction of Ilmenite can be used to prepare ferrotitanium directly without any reductant. The process essentially involves removal of oxygen from the mineral through electrolytic action using calcium chloride as electrolyte and graphite as anode. At a temperature of 950°C, it is shown to be possible that all the oxygen can be removed from the Ilmenite sample, which passes through the electrolyte, to form CO/CO2 at the anode. The process has immense potential for cost effective production of titanium metal as well. Results of the above developmental works are presented in this paper. "From a metallurgical point of view, acid leaching of oxide zone copper ore is considered in the first place in terms of ore grade, whole rock mineralogy, rock granulometry, crushed aggregate size distribution, porosity, permeability and corresponding fluid flow characteristics. Despite exhaustive physicochemical and general mineralogical characterization, drops in copper recovery occur and are often attributed to and “unquantified mineralogical misbehaviour” of the gangue phases. This study establishes an experimental link to monitor and quantify the chemical interaction of chrysocolla, malachite and atacamite with reactive gangue phases.Laboratory-scale sulphuric acid (15%) leaching in small columns is carried out using a synthetic rock composed of 57% quartz, 1% ore phase, and 42% reactive gangue. Gangue phases were selected to represent mineralogy found in argillic, advanced argillic, and propylitic alteration zones. Exotic copper ores of Codelco Norte (in particular Mina Sur) served as model for the modal distribution of mineral phases. Natural reactive gangue phases (<200 Tyler mesh) were chosen as pure as possible: Saz-1 and Swy-1 montmorillonites, KGa-1B and KGa-2 kaolinites (all Clay Mineral Society, USA, Source Clays) Nau-2 nontronite, Imt-1 illite (both Clay Mineral Society Special Clays) and Chilean mordenite, laumontite and bentonite. Ore phases are: mineraloid chrysocolla from Radomiro Tomic (Codelco Norte), reagent grade malachite and a purpose synthesized atacamite-paratacamite mixture. Complete chemical, physicochemical and mineralogical characterizations were carried out for ore and gangue phases.The following observations hold for samples with and without mineralization: Smectite-rich gangue increased up to 75% in volume. Once wet, air-filled vesicles formed due to the rapid sealing effect of overlying smectite in the column. No volume change occurred for illite, mordenite and kaolinite gangues. For kaolinite mixtures acid puddles formed on top of the column during initial leaching due to the delamination and barrier formation of this phyllosilicate. Fluid recovery was <60% for expandable phases and reached up to 80% for non-expandable mixtures. These observations confirm the very low extractions obtained in ore with a combined smectite – kaolinite gangue for Mina Sur. The most important mineralogical changes observed in the solid residues are: reduction of basal smectite phase reflections (XRD), and slight loss of illite intensities. This is also reflected in the major element composition of the residues, which demonstrate a loss of Mg, Mn, Ca, Na, K followed by Fe, Al and Si; with their proportions depending on the starting materials. Furthermore, alunogen and meta-alunogen formed, with related phases coquimbite (illite) and godichite (nontronite) also depending on gangue mineral chemistry. For laumontite samples, meta-alunogen and alunogen precipitated from the leachate."

Numerical modelling of grinding in tumbling mills is traditionally done with the discrete element method (DEM). The grinding balls are then represented by DEM particles and the mill structure is considered rigid. To include more physical phenomena several numerical methods can be combined. One important improvement is to include the mill structure response, using the finite element method (FEM). The interaction between charge and lining can then be studied in detail. The pulp can also be included using a particle-based continuum method e.g. smoothed particle method (SPH). The strength of SPH lies in modelling of free surface flows and very large deformations and it is suited to model simultaneous fluid and granular flow. Still, the coarse particles (grinding balls) in the charge are suitable to be model using DEM. Each of these methods has their strength and weaknesses, but combined they can successfully mimic the main features of the charge movement. With these numerical tools the complex interaction between the different components of the grinding process; pulp, charge, lining and the mechanical behaviour of the mill, can be studied together. This work will present novel numerical approaches to model, simulate and validate charge behaviour in tumbling mills. These numerical models give possibilities to better understand the physical and mechanical behaviour of particulate material systems during grinding in a tumbling mill. This is important in order to develop and optimise future high-capacity grinding circuits and save energy.

China is rich in iron ore resources, but most of these ores are low-grade, polymetallic and refrac-tory ones. Furthermore, with the rapid development of chinese iron & steel industry, the comprehen-sive recovery of these ores is becoming more and more important. The tin, zinc-containing complex iron ores are typical polymetallic and intractable ones, and great reserves of them are found in China. At present, they have not been efficiently utilized. In this paper, based on the investigation of basic physicochemical properties of the tin, zinc-bearing iron concentrates, taken from a mineral processing plant, the mineralogy reason that these concentrates are so intractable and refractory is found out, using advanced microscopic testing methods, such as optical microscope (OM), Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM), X-ray diffrac-tion (XRD), etc. It is found that the symbiotic relationship of iron, tin and zinc metallic minerals are very complicated, and magnetite in the concentrate is closely symbiotic or enwrapped by fine cassi-terite and sphalerite. So it is difficult to separate tin and zinc completely from the iron concentrates by simple regrinding and physical separation method. This investigation provides theoretical guid-ance for developing new approaches for utilizing these concentrates.

Votorantim Metals Corporation is one of the leader companies in the extraction of zinc in Brazil. One of its mines, located in the city of Vazante - MG, was composed by zinc silicate ores, but recent studies have indicated a change in mineralization type with arise of zinc sulphide’s ore bodies with disseminations of galena (PbS) and silver. The liberation size between sphalerite and galena in this ore occurs in very fine granulometry (approximately 18µm), fact that has negatively influenced into the flotation process. Aiming to reduce this problem, studies about the use of dispersing in the flotation process have started. Thus, this study investigated the action of different reagents dispersing on the stability of the suspensions. The tests were carried out with samples of mineral galena and sphalerite using four types of dispersing within two different dosages and two pH. The reagents tested were sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium silicate, carboxymethiylcellulose, and sodium polyacrylate. The results of the dispersion tests were analysed in relation to dispersion index. The tests with hexametaphosphate showed high dispersion for both galena and sphalerite. The sodium polyacrylate and arboxymethiylcellulose showed a high dispersion index for galena and a low index for sphalerite implying that reagent can be used in the concentration process of galena.

Flotation process is based on the formation of primary collector-based supramolecular associates at the mineral surface and within the pulp. Supra molecular chemistry allows studying within a common framework, all kinds of molecular associates, from dimers to large assemblies, resulting from spontaneous association of a large number of interacting components of the flotation system, where the collective action of non covalent bonds can have an important role. Self-organization of supra molecular assemblies in the flotation process can be controlled by modifying the chemical structure of the collector, the nature and arrangement of functional group in it, by introducing secondary agents (SA) into the process, to adjust the interaction between the collector and the surface and to control the hydrophobicity of the adsorption bed. This offers broad opportunities to build supramolecular assemblies to improve the efficiency of flotation. Besides, the more complex is the system, the weaker are the interactions, that determine its behavior. This powerful factor still is not employed deliberately to control the flotation process. Organophosphorus compounds (OPC) - dialkyl phosphoric acids whose radicals contain ethoxylated groups ? are considered as nanocompounds, that can be used in building supramolecular assemblies. The presence in an OPC molecule of functional groups (P=O, P (O) O-, P (O) OH), ethoxylated groups, and aromatic rings is the basis for the formation of stable supramolecular associates. Gross formula: C54H94KO16P. Molecular weight is 1069.39. Phosphoryl anion has a regular tetrahedral structure with the angle of 109.5°. Lengths of -P-O- bonds in a PN molecule are 1.7345Å; length of the hydrocarbonic radical C42-C72 = 33.942Å. In an alkaline environment, PN is in the form of the anion, in an acidic environment ? in the form of the polycation due to protonation of the oxygen in the EO group. Chem Office software suite was used to generate three-dimensional images of an OPC molecule in acidic and alkaline environments, to reveal the OPC geometry (bond lengths, valence angles, aliphatic radical length), to identify the collector&apos;s binding sites with the mineral surface, to find the most stable and energy-efficient molecular conformations of an OPC molecule and its complexes with minerals under various conditions. Mechanisms of interaction between OPCs and the mineral surfaces are different. In ores whose minerals are dominated by ionic bonds (fluorite), the interaction mainly involves the anionic form of the collector; in ores, whose minerals are dominated by covalent bonds - the oxygen of the phosphoryl group (donor-acceptor interaction) and the oxygen of the ethoxylated groups. This difference is responsible for the formation of spatial associates with different surface layer structures. Introduction of supramolecular chemistry concepts into the analysis of flotation phenomena and mechanisms can become an effective tool for better understanding the flotation process and offers new means of consistently improving its effectiveness.

Fine grinding of crystalline graphite was conducted using a dry attrition mill with a vacuum system to investigate the characteristics of size reduction. Low pressure and high temperature conditions in the grinding mill were found to greatly improve the efficiency of the size reduction of graphite. Natural flaky graphite of .100 mesh was ground into sub-micron sizes, then over 90% of the product were able to be reduced below 1?without disrupting their crystallinity in a short period of time. Reducing the atmospheric pressure in the grinding environment promotes the removal of chemical species such as oxygen and water molecules adsorbed on the graphite particle, resulting in effective size reduction while maintaining the crystallinity of graphite.

Granular materials are widely used in process industries, such as chemical, pharmaceutical, cement, food, detergents, and fertilizers. Mixing, blending, calcining, reduction, heating, and granulation of these materials are frequently carried out in rotating cylinders. In all of these processes, the mixing and segregation of these granular materials is important as this controls the secondary phenomena in the rotating kiln such as heat transfer to the material. A significant amount of work is available in the literature but to date these efforts have not been able to capture the important parameters affecting the mixing and segregation in rotating kilns. In addition, the range of parameter values studied so far is rather limited. Simulations of granular materials are based on either discrete elements or continuum models. The discrete element methods (DEM) combine semi-empirical models for the inter particle interactions with the equations of motion from classical mechanics to simulate the explicit paths of all granules in a rotary kiln, thus yielding realistic predictions of the mixing process. This approach is very demanding computationally, which strongly limits the number of granules and the number of revolutions in a simulation. Continuum models dispense with the discrete particles and can therefore be scaled up more easily. But the constitutive relations that serve as the foundation for continuum modeling are difficult to come by, and often only applicable to specific systems and conditions. Here we have chosen DEM simulation for investigating the mixing and segregation behavior of granular materials in a rotating cylinder. This work is directed towards demonstrating the capability of the prediction of the mixing and segregation behavior of granular materials in a horizontal rotating cylinder through discrete element simulation. Further the effect of particle size and rotational velocity on the mixing and segregation behavior is investigated. The simulation results are quantified in terms of mixing index, mixing rate, segregation index and percolation index. Keywords: DEM simulation, granular mixing
