In conjunction with the research study of the Coronation Mine recommended by the National Advisory Committee on Research in the Geo-logical Sciences and coordinated by the Geological Survey of Canada, Canadian Aero Service Limited per-formed a detailed, low-altitude air-borne survey over a block of ground encompassing the .Coronation Mine. The in-phase/out-of-phase air-borne electromagnetic data are com-pared with "horizontal-loop" ground data with reference to: size and nature of conductors detected; criteria in selection of targets for drilling. In-formation provided by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company on their drilling of the numerous conductors in the area is employed in this comparison. The merits of combining a sensitive airborne magnetometer with an air-borne electromagnetic unit are discussed. The magnetic data are considered very important in assessing conductors as prospects for commercial sulphida deposits in this area of numerous electromagnetic anomalies. "IntroductionFEW COUNTRIES equal Canada in the diversity of its mineral output, the range of size of its mine operations, and the extremes of climatic and topographic conditions under which its mining is carried out. Camps large and small are scattered over thousands of miles, some served by excellent communication lines, many in remote regions of the north. Common to most of the deposits is that they are worked by underground methods, and rely on adequate hoisting installations for the success of their operations.Hoisting in some form •pre-dates all other mechanical operations in mines and the hoist remains one of the most important pieces of equipment at the average mine. It provides the single line of communication along which must pass the men and materials to mine the rock, and in turn carry the ore to a place for refinement.Development of Mine Hoists in CanadaCanadian designed hoists were first built and •placed in operation about the year 1880 and have since developed in pace with the rapid growth of the Canadian mining industry. The purpose of this paper is to present, briefly, an outline of Canadian practice in the milling of gold-bearing ores- not, however, including those auriferous ores which are mined and milled primarily for their content of some other metal. It is not the writer's intention to offer technical data, nor to discuss any particular phase of the metallurgy, but rather to give a general résumé of past and present methods. As it is only within recent years that gold milling has assumed prominence in Canada, much of the technology is modern, and detailed articles describing the practice adopted in the several mining districts, and recording the various changes and innovations that have been made from time to time, are to be found in the Transactions of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and in the mining journals. Prior to the year 1860, any gold that had been produced in Canada had come from placer operations in British Columbia, but ' during that year lode gold was discovered in Nova Scotia, in quartz veins, and in several localities mines were opened and small mills of very simple character were erected to treat the ore. These plants, equipped with stamps, or arrastre, were only effective in recovering the free gold. Concentration and chlorination were introduced in an endeavour to save the gold occurring in intimate association with metallic minerals, but, due to various circumstances, gold mining and milling did not progress in Nova Scotia.

"Ilo Copper Smelter operates since 2007 with an ISASMELTTM furnace as a single smelting unit (1,200,000 tpy) associated with two Rotary Holding Furnaces for separation of matte and slag, and which directly produces a discard slag. Southern Peru continually has been improving the slag chemistry of its ISASMELTTM furnace in order to reduce copper losses, given its big economic impact due to large slag mass generation. The present paper describes the influence of the CaO, Al2O3 and magnetite content in the slag of the ISASMELTTM furnace correlated with the SiO2/Fe ratio and its liquidus slag. Also it defines the best slag chemistry and operating practice in order to reduce the copper losses without compromise the bricks life of the furnace.INTRODUCTIONIlo Copper Smelter of Southern Peru (Grupo Mexico) is located on the southern coast of Peru, and treats mainly copper concentrates produced in its own mines (Toquepala and Cuajone).The modernized smelter was commissioned in 2007 and operates with an ISASMELT™ furnace as a single smelting unit (1,200,000 tpy), which is associated with two Rotary Holding Furnaces (RHF) for separation of matte and slag. This slag is directly sent to the dump. Figure 1 shows the smelter flow diagram.The ISASMELT™ process is a bath-smelting process using a single lance. The lance tip is immersed into a molten slag bath contained within the stationary, vertical, refractory-lined ISASMELT™ furnace. The injection of oxygen-enriched air, through the lance into the slag results in a highly turbulent molten bath. Feed material falling into the turbulent bath from above reacts rapidly, resulting in extremely high productivity for a relatively small bath volume."

In the mining industry there exists a constant drive for increased safety and productivity and decreased operating costs. This acts as a driver for implementing advanced technology. As more and more mining operations turn to new technologies, an observed bottle-neck for technology advancement has been the limitation of machine vision solutions available. LiDAR has been seen as a possible solution to the machine vision problem. In the past, a few studies on machine vision solutions have been undertaken by various groups involving scanning laser range-finders and millimetre-wave radar. These studies have done little more than highlight the limitations of both technologies in the mining environment. Little work has been done, however, exploring the applicability of LiDAR imaging technology for mining applications. Neptec Technologies Corp. has developed an obscurant-penetrating LiDAR (OPAL) sensor technology which overcomes the limitations faced by traditional LiDAR sensors when operating in a dusty environment, as well as advanced 3D real-time intelligence (3DRi) data processing algorithms that enable the real-time exploitation of 3D imaging data with sensors mounted on moving vehicles. Working with Teck Resources Ltd. and Barrick Gold Corporation, Neptec is adapting the OPAL sensors and 3DRi technology to mining applications. This paper highlights a number of real-time OPAL/3DRi based mining applications demonstrating how this technology overcomes the limitations of traditional LiDAR to provide a real-time machine vision solution that supports mine machine autonomy.

The utilization of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and model based 3-D control of work machines have increased a lot in new road construction in Finland as well as in other Nordic Countries. Up today, much less attention has been paid into the development of maintenance and rehabilitation processes. As a part of a large research and development program RYM PRE Infra FIN BIM in Finland, a focused research project of the BIM with experiments in total five (5) pilot projects has been performed. A main idea of the new BIM based process has been to utilize mobile laser scanning method for initial data acquirement, the use of novel 3-D analyze and modelling methods for point cloud processing, the use of new type optimization method for the planning of geometric and structural improvements needed for the existing uneven road surfaces, and further, through the creation of 3-D machine control models apply the newest 3- D machine control systems for continuous 3-D control of practical construction work using milling machine and asphalt paver. Finally, an evaluation is made between the new process model and the traditional way of working.

Copper occurs invisibly in a geo-logical environment characterized by swampy conditions and an accumulation of forest peat. This swamp, located in southeastern New Brunswick, contains up to ten per cent cop-per (dry weight), in the organic sediments. This occurrence appears unique in that the metal is apparently organically combined in a chelate compound. Unlike the acidic nature of most peat bogs, the pH of the cup-riferous peat is nearly neutral. Analyses of the peat and associated soils have indicated that the bulk of the copper is contained in the organic sediments. It appears that the cop-per distribution is affected by capillarity, evaporation and the growth of frost crystals, and that the copper fixation is effected by organic sequestration resulting in the metal being bound to the nitrogen or oxygen components of the forest peat. While such a fixation mechanism is not definitely established as responsible for the immobilization of the metal, the facts at hand are compatible with

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been gaining a significant edge in the construction industry over the last decade. BIM allows gathering all building information in one shared database that can help all construction entities better understand, integrate and visualize all work progress from inception to operation of the building. The main purpose behind BIM is to bring all project participants together (Client, Architect, Contractor, Consultant) since the initial stages of a project allowing them to cooperate and work as a team in the promise of an increased productivity, reduced cost, enhanced quality and faster delivery. However, a full-fledged implementation of BIM tools and benefits is not yet achieved in the construction industry and remains a debatable issue for researchers and practitioners in the construction field. This paper aims at assessing BIM awareness and usage in the Lebanese construction industry through conducting interviews with contractors, architects and consultants that are key players in the Lebanese market. A comprehensive literature review about BIM adoption in some developed countries and in the surrounding region is also provided in order to better evaluate the Lebanese industry status in comparison with foreign industries. This research sheds the light on BIM awareness of the different construction parties in the Lebanese market, assesses the extent of its current use, identifies the pertaining implementation challenges, and provides recommendations to enhance BIM role in the Lebanese construction industry.

Part 1.- Metal Mines Early experiments with mechanical loaders in metal mines were confined largely to machines of the shovelling type and generally air-operated. Although the first application of the scraper to metal mines dates back to 1910, it was not until about twelve years ago that it came to be used extensively. Generally, the scraper gives better results in metal mines than in coal mines, as degradation due to soft bottom and breakage are not factors, but it has a wide range of application and is successfully used in the mining of salt, potash, gypsum, zinc, copper, and a variety of ores, from soft material to hard chunky ore which settles compactly. Today, the scraper has replaced to a large extent the shovelling type of machine in metal mines. Scrapers have offered an inexpensive solution for the mucking problem and are now employed in most mining districts throughout the world. They are operated by labourers of all colours and degrees of skill. Each installation, however, requires individual study on the part of the mine mechanical department to determine the type of scraper, horsepower of hoist, and most economical speed of rope, as well as method of rope rigging. Unfortunately, the scraper has no power to select pay ore from waste and its suitability for use under circumstances which might require sorting of the ore can only be decided by a weighing of the economic factors involved

The depletion of higher grade mineral reserves will accelerate the trend toward production from progressively larger and lower grade deposits. The discovery of adequate reserves of leaner ores will require the development of improved exploration techniques with a greater depth range. The principal challenges to the Canadian mining industry are to find the mineral resources required to meet fast growing world demand and to develop mining methods and equipment to ensure production costs which will strengthen our position in export markets in the face of in-creasing world competition. The challenges cannot be met without intensive efforts to attract more technical men to the industry and to improve their training.

With the World Summit for Sustainable Development planned for 2002 in mind, nine of the world's largest mining companies decided to initiate a project to examine the role of the minerals sector in contributing to sustainable development, and how that contribution could be increased ? the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development Project (MMSD). This project assumed from the start that sustainable development could provide a useful framework to guide the minerals sector which main goal was integrating economic activity with environmental integrity, social concerns, and effective governance systems. The broad steps of MMSD project strategy can be grouped into four major categories: increase understanding of sustainable development; create organizational-level policies and management systems for implementing the principles of sustainable development; collaborate with others with common interests to take joint steps towards sustainable development, and; increase our ability to work towards sustainable development at the local, national, and global levels. In opinion of the article's author, to go ahead with the MMSD strategy and achieving the sustainable development objectives, it is necessary to consider the concept of self-organization, fundamental of the emergent new scientific paradigm, and the consequent epistemology and values that conform a supporting culture for sustainable development.

"Sulphide mineral flotation operations continuously strive for a balance between mineralogy, mineral liberation, circuit conditions and reagent solutions to maximize the production rate and recovery of payable metals. The Taseko Gibraltar copper – molybdenum mill operations underwent an extensive project focusing on the fundamentals to identify the effects of process conditions and mineral liberation to improve the bulk circuit copper – molybdenum recovery efficiencies in the bulk flotation circuits. This discussion will provide process data that demonstrates; 1) fundamental relationship between mineral liberation to recovery and grade, 2) flotation circuit condition testing and optimization, 3) reagent combinations resulting in efficient/economical mineral recovery, and 4) the development of a xanthate free reagent solution. The data presented and discussed will also touch on flotation parameters including pH, retention time, kinetics and the effect on bulk circuit recovery performance.INTRODUCTION Taseko's is the owner (75%) and operator of the Gibraltar copper-molybdenum mine, located in south-central British Columbia, the second largest open pit copper mine in Canada and the largest employer in the Cariboo region. Taseko restarted Gibraltar in 2004. From 2006 until 2012, the company invested ~$700 million to expand and modernize the operation which was originally scheduled for demolition when the company acquired it in 1999. In the spring of 2011, construction commenced for Gibraltar Development Plan 3 (GDP3). GDP3 included the construction of a standalone 30,000 ton per day concentrator, built adjacent to the existing 55,000 ton per day facility. The new design capacity of Gibraltar was designed to be 85,000 tons per day. An integral part of the project was a new molybdenum recovery facility. In addition to the new concentrator, the mining fleet was upgraded with a new mining shovel, production drill and ten haul trucks (Taseko, May 2015). In May of 2015, the Company completed an updated mine plan for Gibraltar featuring a 50% decrease in strip ratio. This new mine plan was a result of a detailed, six-month engineering study and forms the basis of an updated NI 43-101 compliant reserve (Taseko Announces Improved Economics At Its Gibraltar Copper Mine, 2015). The new mine plan took into account lower milling costs as a result of the modernized processing facilities (Taseko, May 2015)."

"The Indian Molybdenum deposit occurs in granite near the centre of Indian peninsula, Kewagama lake, in Preissac township, Abitibi county, Quebec, about 40 miles east of Noranda. Quartz veins containing molybdenite were discovered in the vicinity of the deposit in 1901 by J. F. E. Johnston of the Geological Survey of Canada. Innumerable trenches and a few pits were excavated during and prior to the first great war, but there was no production. During the second great war systematic drilling along a favourable zone disclosed by the earlier trenching outlined an orebody of 225,000 tons with a molybdenite content of 0.46 per cent.A 500 on mill was built in 1943, and 91,489 tons of ore underwent treatment, from which 699,568 lb . of molybdenite was recovered. The mill closed down early in 1944 when the wartime need for Canadian molybdenum production eased .GEOLOGYThe general geology in the vicinity of the deposit is shown in Fig. 1. The deposit lies at the north edge of a muscovite-biotite granite mass about 2 miles wide and several miles long. West of Kewagama lake this granite is cut by great swarms of quartz veins . The only other granite in the district known to contain similar swarms of quartz veins, and which similarly has become a source of mo!ybdenite, occurs 20 miles east in La Corne township. The non-molybdenite-bearing granites of the district are either more basic and contain frw dykes except aplite or are distinctly pegmatitic types and contain up to 50 per cent pegmatite dykes with molybdenite only here and there in small amount."

AS is well known, there are large and valuable deposits of coal in British Columbia, both on the mainland and on Vancouver island. These deposits are widely distributed over the Province. The chief sources of supply on the mainland are found in the Fernie and Princeton-Nicola districts and on Vancouver island in the Comox and Nanaimo districts. The coals range from a very high quality bituminous coal to lignite. On the Upper Skeena river there is said to be a very large deposit of anthracite or semi-anthracite, but this field has not been developed. Coal was first discovered in British Columbia on the north end of Vancouver island in the year 1835, but it was not until 1852 that coal mining was seriously undertaken by the Hudson's Bay Company at Nanaimo, where mining has been carried on continuously ever since that date. The production of coal in the Province continued to increase until the year 1910, when the annual output reached its peak at 3,100,000 tons and a total of 7,800 men were employed in the industry. Since 1910, the production has dropped steadily until, in 1934, only 1,347,000 tons of coal were produced and less than 3,000 men were employed. This continued decrease in production has in no way been caused by lack of coal reserves. It has been due entirely to curtailment of markets. I do not propose to discuss coal mining practice in British Columbia, where we have all sorts of mining conditions, including submarine mining. There is no lack of coal supplies for either industrial or domestic purposes, nor is there likely to be any shortage of coal in the Province for many generations. We have our mining troubles, which increase the cost of production, but there are no insuperable difficulties to prevent the extraction of a large and increasing supply of coal. Our main difficulty-in fact our only serious difficulty-is to find a market for our output, and we must consider means which can be evolved not only to conserve our existing markets but also to expand them, at any rate within the boundaries of Canada. I will therefore confine my remarks chiefly to the all-important factor of Markets for our coal.

"ECSTALL MINING has installed in their plants the most modern equipment in the mining industry. At the minesite, digital blocked frequency controls are used to monitor all crushers, conveyors, ventilation equipment and pumps from underground. Distant pumping stations are monitored and controlled by radio. Modern friction skip and cage hoisting systems have been installed with static power supply designed for automatic operation. Rotary-type compressors of recent design are in service in place of the conventional reciprocating-type units. At the concentrator, the 800- and 1500-hp synchronous motors driving the grinding mills have static field excitation and pneumatic clutches, still meeting modern-day concepts, having been• installed in 1966. The maintenance work load has increased annually for the past eight years. The modern plant, with all the present-day sophistication, must have a welltrained and well-organized force of skilled workers, and a maintenance system which will supply realistic facts and guidelines. This presentation will review the relative location of plants, utilities, maintenance and services, plant maintenance control and mechanical control. It is the hope that enough information will be presented to weigh the size of the job and how the resources are utilized for controlled maintenance."

THE prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium has been reported by Denny, Robson, and Irwin in two papers. The first (1) was published in 1937; the second (2), in 1939. The results definitely established that silicosis was prevented in animals by the inhalation of small quantities of aluminium. The present communication records subsequent progress in this field of research. HARMLESSNESS OF ALUMINIUM Animal experiments having served their purpose, it became necessary to consider means to test the discovery on humans. A question for immediate consideration was: Is aluminium harmful to man when inhaled as a fine powder? While the animal experiments were reassuring, since they conclusively showed the powder to be innocuous when breathed by animals, it was, nevertheless, desirable to have additional reassurance with regard to its effect upon human beings. Through the courtesy of the Aluminum Company of America and especially the valued interest in this problem displayed by that Company's Director of Research, Dr. Francis C. Frary, a study was made of the records pertaining to the health of a group of 125 employees who had for many years been engaged in the manufacture of finely powdered, metallic aluminium for the paint and ink industries. The conditions were such that these employees had inhaled varying and oft-times very dense concentrations of this powder daily over periods ranging from 6 to 23 years, the average for the group being 12 years. X-ray pictures of their chests showed no abnormalities attributable to aluminium. Their general health seemed better than that of the 3,000 workers in other sections of the plant. In fact, the early films of three employees in this group of 125 showed shadows suggestive of minimal tuberculosis, which shadows were not discernible in films taken after considerable periods of exposure to aluminium powder. The harmlessness of aluminium was, by this study, reasonably well established at the outset, a finding subsequently verified by Ontario research on humans.

Diesel locomotives for underground haulage have been used in coal mines in Continental Europe for twenty-five years or more. In Great Britain, it was not until 1935 that permission was granted to use them in gassy coal mines, but since that time they have been employed in increasing numbers both in gassy and non-gassy coal mines and in metal mines. Their use underground in coal mines in the United States is still prohibited and the same was the case in Canada until 1946, when permission was granted to operate a Diesel underground in the Adanac mine of West Canadian Collieries, Limited, at Bellevue, Alberta. The locomotive used here is a 50 h.p. Hunslet Mark II. More recently, a 100 h.p. Diesel was placed in operation for underground haulage at No. 18 Colliery of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, in the Sydney coalfield, N. S. Thus, on this continent, Canada has been a pioneer in the use of these locomotives underground in coal mines and there is no doubt that more and more of them will be employed as time goes on. We feel, therefore, that the following notes concerning their design and performance, which we have received from the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, will be of interest to our members.

In this paper, the argument is put forth that the codes used for public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves have some significant limitations with regard to the information provided to investors on the short- to medium-term value of mining properties. Such limitations include a) failure to explicitly incorporate a time element and b) failure to state explicitly the quantity and quality of mineral product that will be produced for sale. A time-value framework for reporting mineral assets is proposed in order to overcome these limitations. The proposed system is based on two classification axes: a) an X-axis representing time in years during which the value of the asset is likely to be realized and b) a Y-axis representing the value identified by a mining or exploration company\u2019s activities. The potential benefits of this system are discussed, including the ability to incorporate factors, such as permitting and construction times, directly into the magnitude of the reported mineral assets. The proposed framework would assist in the standardization of mineral assets reporting in such a manner that they could eventually be more readily included in financial statements. Electrode Columns are commonly used in electric furnaces to deliver current and regulate furnace power to the smelting or melting process. Hatch has developed an innovative patent-pending system for lowering ("slipping") and/or raising ("back-slipping") the electrodes through an electrode column, without requiring the release of any clamping devices. All clamping forces are applied by springs. Unlike systems employing hydraulically applied clamping forces, (e.g., water bladders) the spring system is failsafe. Its inherent simplicity virtually eliminates the need for maintenance. The Hatch system is particularly applicable to Soderberg electrodes, and comprises two axially movable slipping clamps and a stationary power clamp, each of which apply a distributed, radial clamping force to the electrode. The magnitudes of the slipping sleeves' clamping forces and sequencing of their axial movements are selected such that the slipping clamps, in conjunction with the weight of the electrode, provide slipping or back slipping without release of any clamping force.
