Unmanned construction technology used for remote control operation of construction machines has some problems to solve compared with manned operation of construction machines, such as fatigue due to long-term operation or decreases in operational efficiency. To solve these problems, we recorded the viewpoints of operators in both manned and remote control operation and analyzed the differences. This paper reports on our discussion of improving the operability of remote control operation based on the analysis results.

Introduction The Author As the pail of smoke and wartime destruction gradually rises from the surface of the earth, from all countries, statesmen assemble to discuss and prepare pacts and treaties which are designed to, once more, bring people of all nations to understand each other and live in harmony. Scientists and engineers throughout the world are also undergoing a drastic reconversion in their ideas and objectives. No longer do they think only in terms of destruction and twist their brains to develop more devastating weapons or to surpass production records of war machinery. They have turned their eyes and ambitions to more pleasant tasks and are taking stock of wartime developments in materials, fabricating procedures, and equipment, many of which had been carefully shrouded with a veil of secrecy, and are applying their new knowledge to the fabrication or improvement of the tools of peace. The next few years will see the gradual elimination of scores of substitutes and makeshifts, expedients which the constantly changing law of supply and demand' under wartime stress necessitated. The universal search for satisfactory substitutes, however, has resulted in a general awakening of plant engineers to the possibilities of materials with which they were relatively inexperienced, with the result that, in many instances, what was considered a substitution at the outset turned out to be more satisfactory than the original material, and, in reality, can be considered a worthwhile development. Not only have materials been explored, but existing fabricating processes have been reviewed, and others, built around the properties and characteristics of new materials, created.

ABSTRACT Fierce market competition and demand have made it imperative for mining companies to achieve higher productivity and operational efficiency. The selection of the best mining method and equipment combinations will enable companies to meet production and efficiency targets. Continuous mining is increasingly preferred by companies for its high efficiency and low unit costs. We developed simulation models for two continuous mining systems: the continuous surface miner (CSM) system and the at-face slurrying (AFS) system. Considering two different case studies, the paper discusses application of developed models to determine the optimal number of trucks and equipment capacities for the two systems.

The thorough analysis of results obtained from different testing campaigns performed on an alumina dry-scrubber pilot installation treating aluminum potline offgases, suggests a clear relationship between the emissions of gaseous fluoride and the fluoride saturation level of the alumina. The integration of this relationship into the development of a new generation of alumina dry scrubber represents an intriguing challenge regarding the design of more efficient air pollution control equipment. An innovative scheme challenging conventional industry practices was proposed. From theoretical simulations, the reduction in fluoride emissions can potentially be reduced by as much as 50% in the summer season. To validate this innovative approach, Solios in partnership with Alcoa Primary Metals, modified one of the Aluminerie de Deschambault's systems by adding new temporary equipment on the operating units and subjecting it to several test campaigns. This article presents the first results obtained in testing this new and innovative approach on alumina dry scrubbers used to capture fluoride emissions coming from aluminum electrolysis potlines.

The climatic area in which Poland is located requires heating the ventilation air at intake shafts during the winter season. Air heating of the intake shaft should ensure safe operation of hoisting devices; while at the same time it also affects the conditions of the mine environment. The paper presents the issues of shaft heating in coal mines in terms of the mining law, the effect on the conditions of the mine environment and heating technology solutions used in the mines of Kompania Weglowa S.A. (KWSA).

Abstract-The Campo Morado precious-metal-bearing, volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits occur in a lower Cretaceous, bimodal, calc-alkaline volcanic sequence in a major northerly trending belt in the Guerrero Terrane in northeastern Guerrero, Mexico. During upper Cretaceous to Early Tertiary greenschist-facies regional metamorphism, the rocks were deformed strongly into a northeast-verging fold-and-thrust belt. Three later stages of weak deformation were dominated, respectively, by kink folds, broad warps, and extensional faults. Most deposits occur in the upper part of a sequence of felsic flows and heterolithic volcanoclastic rocks or at its contact with overlying chert and argillite-sandstone. The Reforma and El Rey massive sulfide deposits are on the overturned limb of a major, thrusted anticline, and the Naranjo and El Largo massive sulfide deposits are to the south on the upright limb of the same major fold. The La Lucha and San Rafael massive sulfide occurrences are in an upper plate to the southwest which was thrusted over the plate containing the Naranjo and El Largo deposits. In several of the deposits, Au, Ag, Zn, and Pb are concentrated near the stratigraphic top, and Cu is concentrated near the stratigraphic base. Major minerals are pyrite, quartz, ankerite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and galena. Minor minerals are tennantite-freibergite, arsenopyrite, and pyrrhotite. Gold and Ag occur in argentian gold, and Ag also occurs in tennantite-freibergite. The cumulative inferred resource of massive sulfide for the Reforma, Naranjo, El Rey, and El Largo deposits exceeds 30 Mt, with the latter two deposits incompletely delineated. Underlying pyrite-quartz stockwork zones contain chalcopyrite, chlorite, and sphalerite. Hydrothermal alteration minerals in the stratigraphic footwall are pyrite, quartz, chlorite, ferroan dolomite, and ankerite. In the stratigraphic hangingwall, hydrothermal alteration minerals are sericite, calcite-dolomite, and lesser clay minerals and quartz. The deposits belong to a low-sulfidation, volcanogenic massive sulfide system formed in a subaqueous environment, and are of the bimodal, siliciclastic type.

ABSTRACT; Agnico-Eagle’s LaRonde mine is one of the deepest mines in Canada. Ground conditions in the deeper levels can be very challenging, ranging from hard and brittle to soft and squeezing. As a result, rock mechanics and ground control practices have had to evolve considerably to accommodate progressively deeper mining activities. This paper focuses on the deeper levels of mines and how the difficult ground conditions encountered there have influenced the mining strategy. The first section examines ground control practices and support systems in highly stressed, poor quality rock. The evolution of level layout is also presented. Finally, improvements in stope sequencing are reviewed.

"The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the convergence measurements in a drift excavated in the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone. The drift axis is in the direction of the major principal horizontal stress whereas the stress state is quasi-isotropic in the drift’s section. The initial geometry of the drift being circular, the anisotropic character of the deformation is taken into account by assuming that the drift shape evolves in an elliptical shape. The convergence measurement data on six different points around the drift are analyzed to identify the main axes of the deformation ellipse, following the methodology proposed by Vu et al. (2013, Rock Mech Rock Eng, 46, 231-246). Then, using the semi-empirical law proposed by Sulem et al. (1987, Int J Rock Mech Min Sci, 24, 145–154), the convergence evolution is fitted independently for each axis of the ellipse. This method permits to distinguish two effects: the face advance effect and the time-dependent behavior of the ground. The results for the two directions of the ellipse axes show very close values for the parameters describing the time-dependent properties of the ground, the distance of influence of the face, and the extension of the decompressed zone around the gallery. Such model can provide valuable insights for predictions of the convergence evolution in the long-term. INTRODUCTIONDeep disposal of radioactive waste has been studied in France for more than two decades. The French National Radioactive Waste Management Agency (Andra) began in 2000 the construction of an Underground Research Laboratory (URL) with the main goal of demonstrating the feasibility of a geological repository in Callovo-Oxfordian claystone. Several research programs have taken place to improve the knowledge of the rock properties and its response to the excavation progress. The optimization of supports design for long-term behavior is an important point to develop. A network of experimental drifts has been constructed with variations on: excavation method, structure geometry, supports system and orientations with respect to in-situ principal stresses’ directions. In each drift different sections have been instrumented to monitor the convergence evolution and the rock deformation. Continuous monitoring of the excavated zone around the drifts revealed the development of a fractured zone (extensional and shear fractures) induced by the excavation. The extent of this fractured zone depends on both the drift orientation and the in-situ stress field (Armand et al., 2014). Indeed, the fractures distribution has an important influence on the convergence of the drifts."

The province's lignite resources lie mainly in the south, extensions of the much larger deposits in Montana and North Dakota. Because of planned additional capacity, conventional steam power generation will probably remain as the dominant resource usage for many decades. Conversion of coal to other energy forms is receiving emphasis and in the future will compete with steam power generation in terms of quantities used.Economic deposits, minable by present-day technology, have been generally defined. Because a large percentage of the total lignite resource is in seams containing multiple partings, future extraction will become much more difficult and capital intensive.Increased public involvement will ensure that the impacts of future coal mining and usage operations are compatible with environmental and social objectives.

The industrial minerals industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is a significant contributor to the provincial economy. The variety ofcommodities produced reflects the diverse geological environment from which they come. A highlight of the past decade has been the continuing development of dimension stone quarries, with producers now active in anorthosite, gabbro, granite and sandstone. Other dimension stone prospects have been identified and are in various stages of assessment and development. Western Newfoundland hosts a large resource of limestone, dolomite and marble. It provides raw material for industries that produce Portland cement, agricultural limestone and aggregate, as well as chemical-grade limestone and dolomite products. In western Labrador, dolomitic marble is quarried for use in the production of self-fluxing iron ore pellets. The recent opening of a new gypsum quarry at Fischells Brook signalled the beginning of a new era in the commercial production ofgypsum, a commodity which the province has produced since the 1950s. Hopefully it will emulate the nearby Flat Bay Quarry (now closed) which was a long-time exporter to markets along the U.S. eastern seaboard, in addition to supplying local demands. Oil production and continuing exploration in the Newfoundland offshore has renewed interest in local barite deposits for potential use in drilling fluids. Already there has been some production from the Collier Point deposit, and at Buchans, an existing plant is being refurbished to recover barite from a large tailings pond. Emerging new industries include the development of an antimony mine in central Newfoundland, the development of silica deposits near Labrador City for silicon metal production, and reactivation of the St. Lawrence fluorspar mine. The province has many deposits with development potential such as rare metals at Strange Lake, white marble at Roddickton and salt deposits near St. George's Bay region.

Research, whether applied or fundamental, is a human endeavour which increases our understanding of nature. It is insufficient to simply observe, explore, record and classify. It i necessary, as well, to fit the observations into a satisfying theoretical scheme; that is, to synthesize. Two examples of successful research programs in physical metallurgy are di cussed from this point of view. A pessimistic view is taken of the prospects for rapid growth of research activities in the Canadian metallurgical industry. THE term "research" is used indiscriminately to describe any intellectual or experimental activity which leads to a change in society. Proponents of various activities, ex-tending all the way from alloy development to subliminal advertising, use the status of the term for special advantage. With the Canadian Government entering upon a project of support to industrial research, it might be well to determine what definition is most in the public interest. As an academic, I have a rather jealous attachment to the definition that research, whether applied or fundamental, is a human endeavour which increases our understanding of nature.

Material loss by abrasion of contact surfaces of pipes, chutes, pumps, and other equipment in contact with ore is one of the main reasons for downtime of mining operations. Abrasion protection materials in use range from expensive tungsten carbide overlay to hardened steels, ceramics, as well as polymers, particularly polyurethanes (PUR). This paper describes abrasion protection products made from High Performance Polyurethane Elastomers. An interior pipe coating was developed that exhibited outstanding abrasion resistance and an extremely high adhesion to steel. Years of field testing in oil sands tailings as well as applications in slurry lines (e.g., phosphate slurries) have proven the performance of this material. A proprietary field joining process was developed and successfully applied in the field. This joining process requires only one field weld per joint very similar to the joining of uncoated pipe. No internal re-coating is necessary adding savings during pipe laying to the significant savings of reduced down time. Using the building-kit chemistry of polyurethane synthesis, similar high performance elastomers were used to extend the life time of ball mills. An intelligent system was developed in which wear parts contain sensors reporting the actual wear thereby optimizing maintenance interval leading to significant cost savings for the operator. Test data as well as field experience with High Performance PUR Elastomers for abrasion protection in mining are presented.

"Given the high demand of copper and the lack of new high-grade deposits, low grade copper ores containing copper oxides and refractory sulfides need to be processed as well. However, in order to recover copper from refractory copper ores, the leaching performances should be improved. In this study, we investigated the effect of the mechanical activation in the leaching of copper from covellite. The influence of a mechanical treatment by planetary ball milling on leaching rate in sulfuric leaching media was evaluated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), mineral liberation analysis (MLA) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). Results showed a significant increase in copper leaching from around 50%up to 100% along with an improvement of the leaching kinetics when using planetary ball milling. XRD spectra showed the disappearance of the covellite peak from (101) face, thus suggesting the amorphization of covellite associated with the use of planetary ball milling. XAFS results showed that the coordination number of Cu changed from 6 to 3, thereby confirming the effectiveness of the mechanochemical effect.INTRODUCTIONDuring the last decades, while the copper grade in copper ores has been decreasing, the concentration of impurities such as arsenic tends to increase, thus requiring for the processing of low grade copper ores. For a suitable processing of copper minerals, hydrometallurgical processes are preferable due to the lower costs, the lower environmental impact and the easier implementation (Watling, 2006). However, for an economical recovery of copper, the leaching performances must be improved.Among the recent advancements in leaching technologies, the mechanochemical activation allows for an improvement of the leaching performances by means of high-intensity grinding(Mohammadabad et al., 2016). In the first place, the improvement is the result of the dramatic decrease of particle size, which results in an increase of the mineral surface area and the consequent enhancement of leaching kinetics. Furthermore, the intense mechanical stress due to the high-intensity grinding could induce the rupture of the crystal structure producing a decrease of crystallinity. Such changes of the mineralogical structure, also known as mechanochemical effect, can lead to more leachable mineral, thereby resulting in a greater dissolution of copper. Last but not least, whereas the mineral surface might undergo passivation during leaching, the high-intensity grinding can continuously refresh the surface of the mineral, thus exposing portions of unleached bulk mineral."

The Moab Khotsong Metallurgical Complex comprises a gold recovery circuit (Noligwa Gold Plant) and a uranium recovery circuit (South Uranium Plant). The metallurgical complex employs the reverse leach technology for the recovery of uranium; specifically, uranium extraction prior to gold using acid leaching processing. The inherent uranium species in the ore are uraninite, coffinite and brannerite. The slurry that has been subjected to the uranium leach is further subjected to solid-liquid separation to separate the uranium in solution through counter-current decantation and the solids (solids carrying all the gold), which are repulped and returned to the gold plant for gold processing. The uranium leaching process is critical to the uranium playing a pivotal role as a value adding by-product to the gold operation. The benefit of adopting this reverse leach process, for improved gold recovery, is that it exposes gold particles occluded within the uranium matrices and avails them for cyanidation. However, the drive for operational efficiency in uranium extraction must be weighed against the incremental operating cost against the backdrop of depressed spot uranium market prices. Over the years, efforts were directed at maintaining the benefit of extracting uranium to enhance gold recovery and simultaneously, optimizing the operating cost model for the uranium operation to remain relevant to the gold operation. The aim of this paper and the corresponding presentation is to give account of the uranium processing optimization journey embarked on over the years; namely, the operational trade-offs made in the process of ensuring that uranium continues to add value to the gold operation. These challenges were faced while striking a fine balance between processing cost and operational efficiencies against the prevailing depressed uranium spot market prices. Mineralogical- and laboratory tests conducted form the support basis for the results and observations articulated in the paper.

A study was conducted for an operating mine to determine the appropriateness of its tailings material to be used for the preparation of a low modulus, high density backfill. The research was initiated due to issues arising from increased observations of compressive failure of backfill placed in stopes and inconsistent backfill behaviour (i.e. increased backfill brittleness and modulus). Backfill materials investigated were classified tailings and de-slimed tailings. Characterization of the physical properties of the classified and de-slimed tailings materials was conducted to assess the effect that these material properties would have on the strength and deformation behaviour of high density backfill products made using them. Such behaviour was investigated to determine whether differences in tailings physical properties would influence the strength and modulus character of the backfill materials. Uniaxial (UCS) and consolidated-undrained triaxial compression strength tests were conducted to determine strength performance and deformation behaviour of backfill. This paper presents the results of the backfill material characterization study and how different particle size distributions affected the strength performance and deformation behaviour of the different backfill mixes. It also demonstrates how stress-strain curves generated from material strength tests were used to evaluate variation in high density backfill mix response when such materials were subjected to unconfined and confined (triaxial) compression loading.

"The purification of rare earth elements (REE) at mining operations is traditionally accomplished by multiple chemical phase-transfer processes including precipitation, solvent extraction, and ion exchange. We describe REE purification results with Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) columns that were developed to improve the speed and economy of REE purification. The SPE columns have the properties of enhanced equilibration kinetics, so that residence time of a few seconds will accomplish selective chemical transfers from solution phase to solid phase. We describe the separation of REE’s as a class from leach solutions and the further purification of REE salts. INTRODUCTIONHistorically the rare earths were first chemically separated from each other and purified by fractional crystallization. This slow, cumbersome, and laborious process was not suited to commercial production. Solvent Exchange (SX) technology was applied to the problem of separating and purifying the rare earth elements when it was determined in the late 1960s that there might be commercial uses for them individually. At the same time the very slow and expensive technique of ion exchange was applied either for ultra-purification of the desired “light” rare earths, or for the recovery and purification of the tiny amounts of higher atomic numbered, “heavy,” rare earths. Solvent Exchange (SX) has today become the standard for separating the rare earths across their atomic number spectrum. Whereas the separation of the light rare earths commercially may take 30 “cascades’ in a modern Chinese plant, the total separation of all of them from each other may take up to 80 such “cascades,” and is only even “practical’ with preconcentrated feed stocks, such as those produced in China by heap-leaching techniques performed in situ on very low grade radio-nuclide free ionic absorption clays.. Ultra-pure materials of all types are produced today by ion-exchange processing of ionic species already separated by solvent exchange.Hard rock deposits and refractory residues of tin mining and residues from uranium mining have been identified outside of China with very high ratios of dysprosium and other heavy rare earths to the majority lighter ones. "The Otjikoto mining and milling complex is 90% owned by B2Gold Corporation, and began commercial operation on February 28, 2015. The milling circuit operates at a throughput 3.3 million tonnes per annum, with an average reserve gold grade of 1.28 g/t. The ore is high in Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG), which varies between 73-91%, depending on ore type. Overall gold recovery since start-up is 98.2%, with about 63.5 % coming from the gravity circuit as doré. 2016 cash operating costs, and all in sustaining cost (“AISC”) were $361 and $604 per ounce, respectively.During design, three ore types were tested for GRG content, and based on the high GRG value of all three ore types, the decision was made to treat the full ball mill circulating load by gravity. Once operating, the gravity circuit performance was characterized by performing a detailed gravity audit, which included the ore, cyclone classification, Knelson concentrators, and the Consep Acacia intensive leach system. The deeper ores contain significant pyrrhotite, and this created some unusual challenges that had to be overcome. This paper presents the gravity circuit design process, the circuit commissioning, and the audit results and ongoing improvements.IntroductionHeadquartered in Vancouver, Canada, B2Gold Corp. was founded in 2007. Currently, B2Gold has five operating mines, and numerous exploration projects in various countries, including Nicaragua, the Philippines, Namibia, Mali and Burkina Faso. It is situated approximately 300 kilometers north of Windhoek, the country’s capital, within the Province of Otjozondjupa. This article analyzes the social acceptability process of a mining project located in an existing city. It will explore how the principles of sustainable development have been integrated in the project of the Canadian Malartic open pit mine held by the Osisko Mining Corporation, and the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives proposed to strengthen the social acceptability of the project. This mine is located on the ancient south quarter of Malartic and has required the displacement of hundred of houses and five institutions. The location and the inherent social impacts generated by the relocation of the citizens of the south quarter makes this case particularly interesting to understand social dynamics in an era of environmental consciousness. These major constraints of the mine generate high expectations within the urban population with regard to the social and economic benefits it will receive from the project. In a context where society demands higher CSR from the corporation, Osisko is closely followed regarding their actions toward the sustainable development principles to see if they respect the environment and the desires of the community. From the beginning, the company had to be a model of sustainable development in various aspects reflected by the manifold interest of the population. To understand the endeavor made by the company to fulfill the demand of CSR, we will analyze how the company understood sustainable development principles and what CSR initiatives Osisko company put forward. We will explore the involvement of the company in various social aspects like employment, employee satisfaction, and the level of commitment to non-discrimination policy in employment, notably with the native populations. We will also take a closer look at the relationship built by the company with the community and the level of commitment with the various stakeholders of the community. In this way, we will be able to seize the level of involvement of the company in the fulfillment of the principles of sustainable development toward a higher CSR, and to specify the trajectory adopted to build social acceptance.

"OIL EXPLORATION in Western Canada has produced outstanding results in the past few years. From such successes as Leduc and Redwater on the western plains, oilmen are now moving north in the ever-widening search for oil. They are reaching new frontiers and meeting new problems presented by this vast hinterland.One of the least known but most troublesome phenomena which will be encountered is permafrost. This term relates to a thickness of soil or other superficial deposit, or even of bed-rock at variable depths beneath the surface, in which a temperature below freezing has continually existed .for a long time. This permanently frozen ground affects, in many ways, oil exploration and exploitation. Seismic records are changed, pipe lines cannot easily be ditched into the ground, formation of wax is speeded-up in tubing and pipe lines, roads are difficult to build, and foundations of buildings and even of drilling 'rigs may require entirely new methods of construction.Permafrost underlies roughly one-fifth of the entire 'land surface of the world. It covers the northerly portions of Eurasia and North America. In the area that we are here concerned with, the southern boundary of permafrost extends south of east from about latitude 59°N. on the Pacific coast across the Rocky mountains, through Great Slave and Athabasca lakes, to cape Henrietta Maria, at the junction of Hudson bay and James bay (see Figure 1). Geologists generally agree that permafrost first appeared in the Pleistocene or Ice Age as the result of abnormal ground freezing."
