"The outlook for supplying the world's metal needs in the next twenty-five years is good, although in several cases basic costs are likely to increase with rising demand. Metal prices calculated at a constant dollar from 1900 to the present show that for nickel, copper, silver, lead, zinc and tin, prices -and presumably production costs -fell from 1900 to the early 1930s. Since then, they have generally risen, apparently reflecting some depletion in relation to demand. This tendency has been accentuated since the post-World War II adoption of managed, full-employment, growth economics, which have resulted in a sharp escalation in world demand for metals. (Abandonment of such policies, apparently now under consideration in North America, would, of course, affect the pre-dictions of this paper.) Nevertheless, metal prices generally are still below those prevailing in 1900. Exploration potential exists for disseminated ores of many metals still thought of as characteristic of lode and vein deposits. These include uranium, silver, gold, tin and nickel and, to a lesser extent, lead and zinc. Considering the discovery potential for some principal metals in relation to expected demand and prices, I would tend to rate them as follows: molybdenum, zinc, lead, uranium, silver, gold, tin, nickel and copper."

Placer Domes? Campbell Mine, situated in northwestern Ontario, is undergoing an assessment of the efficiency of the operation which is necessitated by the low gold price and a reducing ore reserve grade. A decision has recently been taken to move away from a functional based departmental structure (underground, engineering, geology, etc.) towards a team-based system where crews, engineers, geologists and supervisors are responsible for the planning and operation of a particular area of the mine. The objective is to improve communication and understanding of the goals and achievements and to ensure a forum is available for the generation of ideas. It is intended to increase the accountability and decision-making ability of the teams in an effort to achieve the mines? safety and production targets. This paper presents a critical review of the progress of this organisational change process and its successes and failures at the time of writing.

"Uranium and thorium mineralization occurs at several localities in eastern Quebec along the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The main occurrences are near Sept-Iles, Baie Johan Beetz, Romaine and St-Augustin river. Mineralization occurs mainly as disseminated uraninite, uranothorite, uranothorianite, monazite and minor zircon and allanite. Yellow to orange oxidation products are observed along fracture planes of the uranium-bearing deposits to a depth of a few feet. Magnetite, biotite and smoky quartz have a distinct tendency to accompany the radioactive minerals. The host rocks include white to pink pegmatite, pink granite and also, in the case of the Romaine and St-Augustin River occurrences, cream to grey plagioclase-rich, well foliated paragneiss and migmatite. Radioactivity near secondary structures, such as fractures and joint planes, indicates some reconstitution of radioactive minerals.The North Shore of Quebec is the northeast extension of the Grenville sub-province. It is also a uranium-thorium metallogenic province."

This work explores the effect of ore hardness variability on the design of a solar photovoltaic system with battery storage and grid backup, to operate a semi-autogenous grinding mill (SAG). First, a case of two synthetic ore populations was studied, without any consideration of spatial distribution. The mean and variance of the ore hardness (measured in specific energy consumption) of both populations were subjected to a sensitivity analysis. The operation was evaluated with one and two stockpiles. The latter allows classifying according to ore hardness to adapt the SAG energy consumption to the solar cycle. The results show that using two stockpiles allows achieving a larger autonomy (i.e., fewer energy imports) at lower total costs, especially when the difference of mean hardness between the two populations is large. The difference in variance (between the two populations) has a smaller impact on the design recommendations. Second, a case study was performed considering the spatial distribution of geometallurgical units. Two cases were considered: (a) brownfield, when there is historical information of the actual variability of the ore hardness; and (b) greenfield, when the system design relies mainly on geometallurgical modeling. Brownfield and greenfield planning result in similar sizing recommendations of the solar power plant if precise drill cores are available. In this case, geometallurgical modeling is an effective tool for forecasting the energy demand necessary for designing the power plant. INTRODUCTION Solar energy can help make mining more sustainable (Moreno-Leiva et al., 2017). With falling battery costs, an autonomous solar supply is soon to become an economical alternative in many parts of the world, even in the presence of a larger power grid (Child et al., 2017). Although this, places with high solar radiation such as the Atacama Desert in Chile, nowadays show a large potential of incorporating solar energy as a supply of energy. Many of the Chilean copper mines are in this zone making it interesting to study their compatibility and potential of integrating this renewable source to their operation. The power demand in a copper mineral processing plant is determined by the main power loads in grinding and flotation, with grinding typically the largest power consumer, especially the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills (Wei and Craig, 2009). In Chile, it corresponds on average the 50% of the electrical energy consumption (COCHILCO, 2013). Solar energy production is determined by the irradiance perceived into the solar photovoltaic (PV) panels (which varies through the geographic location) and several other climatic parameters such as the current season, humidity, temperature, altitude, and others (Molina et al., 2017). Also, solar energy is only generated during the sun hours, getting to a maximum generation at a certain peak hour during midday, and finally dropping to zero during the night. This shows a cyclic parabolic profile as shown in Figure 1. Due to the SAG mill operated continuously, the power supply always must be available. During the night, to continue supplying the energy, it is necessary to complement the solar power generation with a battery energy storage system (BESS), which will act as a power backup and a buffer. For the optimal sizing of this PV- BESS system, information of the demand profile is needed (Pamparana et al., 2017). In the case of the SAG mill operation, the resulting demand relates to the ore-hardness for a specific throughput and grind size (Morrell, 2004). Therefore, for a given throughput and target grind size, a harder ore would require more power, and variable hardness results in more variable demand and a subsequent need for larger energy storage (Bueno et al., 2015). ABSTRACT: The current study analyzes the feasibility of an odd operation: to obtain, using a properly tailored drilling and blasting scheme, blocks suitable for the production of dimension stone from tunnel driving. Clearly, a compromise must be found between the rate of progression and the achievement of workable blocks. As a case study, a civil work under consideration in northern Italy was examined. The work was planned to cross a conglomerate that has traditionally been locally exploited for the production of highly prized paving and lining stones with excellent strength and aesthetic features. Natural exposures and mined-out quarries were available for tests. The relevant rock data are given, blast designs are shown (within the limitations of contour accuracy), and the test program is described.

"INTRODUCTIONThe proper selection of carbon for a gold carbon in pulp (CIP) circuit involves careful evaluation of several physical, chemical and economic factors. A series of evaluations are required to maximize gold recovery at the lowest capital and operating costs, whether the carbon is selected for an existing gold mill circuit or a new mill under design.Although evaluation may proceed through various stages, it is the intent of this paper to outline some of the preliminary testwork that should be carried out to screen potential carbons for a particular application.An examination of the specification sheets supplied by the various carbon manufacturers may indicate some desirable properties on which to make cursory selection. This exercise by itself will not provide the basic data needed for selecting the best carbon for a particular ore pulp and metallurgical circuit. The necessity of further metallurgical evaluation is indicated by the fact that different carbons perform differently depending on the physical and chemical nature of the leach pulp. In the case of an existing mill, actual leach slurries using mill water are available and should be used for testwork. In the case of new mills, leach pulps must be prepared to simulate the proposed circuit.Five coconut shell activated carbons were obtained from various suppliers, all reported to be 6 x 16 mesh carbons recommended for CIP circuits. A metallurgical evaluation was made utilizing two leach pulps with significantly different characteristics. This paper describes the test procedures utilized and the results obtained from the testwork."

"Numerical simulation of collapse of tunnels in weak rocks is one of the challenging problems in rock mechanics. Collapse can impose technical and financial difficulties during the construction of underground excavations. This phenomenon, particularly in shallow excavations, may lead to propagation of a caved zone toward the surface and formation of chimney subsidence. Chimney subsidence has numerous catastrophic consequences such as the adverse environmental impacts and damage to surface structures in vicinity of excavations. Due to the importance of subsidence in civil engineering, the main goal of this study is to propose an appropriate method for preventing the formation of subsidence in shallow tunnels in weak rocks. The Dolaei road tunnel is investigated as a case study, where a large chimney subsidence has occurred. The geology of the area and the geostructural characteristics of the rock mass surrounding the tunnel are briefly reviewed in this paper. Two-dimensional as well as threedimensional numerical simulations are conducted to study the tunnel stability. Moreover, the effects of staged excavation and pre-supporting method on controlling the ground movements are studied. Outcomes of this study indicate that employing forepoling and staged excavation can be a practical remedy to control the ground movements and prevent the formation of chimney subsidence.INTRODUCTIONPredicting the formation of subsidence, mainly sinkhole subsidence over civil or mining excavations, is a very challenging task. An accurate prediction of subsidence is required for selecting an appropriate control and mitigation system to reduce the level of ground movements and its impact on the surface life (Bétournay et al. 1994; Leca and New 2007). Excavations, particularly in weak grounds, could result in surface subsidence; they modify the in-situ stress conditions as well as the hydrogeology of the area. Construction of unsupported excavations in soft soils and relatively weak rocks usually leads to the formation of a failure zone behind the face. In a very soft ground, the failure zone can extend towards the ground ahead of the tunnel face. Propagation of this zone toward the ground surface results in generation of sinkholes."

Canal communication between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario has been one of almost constant enlargement and reconstruction to meet the rapid growth of trade and commerce, and the consequent steady increase in the size of vessels plying the Great Lakes. The original canal was built by the Welland Canal Company. The first sod was turned in 1824 and the first vessel passed through in. 1829. There were 36 lift-locks, built of oak timber, 110 feet long and 22 feet wide, with a depth of water over the sills of 8 feet. The second canal, now known as the 'Old Welland Canal' was built by the Dominion of Canada (1842 to 1850). There were 26 masonry locks, 150 feet long, 26.5 feet wide and with a depth of water over the sills of 9 feet. The walls and banks were raised in 1853 to give a 10-foot draught. The third canal, known as the 'New Welland Canal, built by the Dominion of Canada, was started in June 1874 and the first boat passed through in the spring of 1882. There are 25 masonry lift-locks, 270 feet long, 45 feet wide and with a depth of water over the sills of 12 feet. The walls and banks were raised in 1891 to give a 14-foot draught. This is the canal in use at present.

The feasibility assessment of a mineral deposit requires the construction of a geo mechanical model of rock mass properties, for the purpose of preliminary mine design. The Noranda Technology Centre has been involved in the development of geomechanical models for several mineral deposits at the feasibility stage. Each model is constructed through intact rock testing, geotechnical core logging, geotechnical mapping and rock mass classification. Rock mechanics principles are used to develop conceptual stope designs and propose possible mining sequences. This methodology is applicable to both new mining projects and to the development of new areas within anoperating mine. This paper explains how the geomechanical model is developed and reviews its application to several case studies.

"The No. 6 orebody is located 6 miles from the main op.eration of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited and includes open-pit and primary gyratory crushing facilities. Ore is transferred by truck to the secondary crushing facility at the main plant. About 3,500 tons of ore per day are crushed to minus % in. and ground to 68 per cent minus 400 mesh in rod and ball mills for flotation feed. Conditioning and aeration precede rougher flotation, and four stages of cleaning bring concentrates to a grade of 42 per cent Pb + Zn + Cu. Middling products are reground and refloated in a secondary flotation circuit, producing a cleaner feed and a final tails product. Primary bulk concentrate is treated with sulphur dioxide and steam-heated to l 70°F and the majority of the gangue is floated off, leaving a product that assays 57 per cent combined Pb + Zn + Cu and is suitable for marketing. This material is thickened, filtered, dried and loaded into railway cars for shipment to the smelter. Reagent use on flotation is conventional, with many compromises in dosage required to maintain the recovery of lead and zinc in the most advantageous proportions. Many refinements in the flowsheet have been made since start-up in 1966, and more may be made as laboratory and plant testwork indicate possible improvements."

The solution is to find where the welfare benefits equal the cost involved to curb the degree of environmental damage (Fig . I) . In the mining industries this can be done by modifying the production/extraction process itself. For most pollutants, the marginal costs of control will exceed the benefits from further reduction of damage long before the zero pollution damage point is reached (Fig. I). From an economic perspective the optimal alteration of environment by mining would occur at z; pollution continues to be caused by ""zy"" control units, but it would be inefficient to pursue the redemption efforts further because the marginal cost involved would exceed marginal welfare benefits."

"When Texas Gulf Sulphur Company discovered the Kidd Creek ore body in 1964, a crash program began almost immediately for the design and construction of a modern concentrator. It was necessary to mill two distinct ore types; one containing copper and zinc, the other lead, silver and zinc minerals. The final concentrator design was to handle 9,000 tons of ore daily in three circuits. One circuit was to treat copper-zinc and another lead-zinc ore exclusively on a permanent basis. A central circuit was designed with adequate flexibility to treat either of the above ore types in accordance with planned mining schedules. Ecstall Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary, now operates the mine and concentrator complexes for Texas Gulf. The mine is located 15 miles north of Timmins and the concentrator 15 miles to the north-east along Highway 101. The ore is hauled from the mine to the concentrator over a 17-mile railroad. Initial milling operations began in November, 1966.1 - ABSTRACTThis paper deals with bulk reagent handling at the Kidd Creek concentrator. The reagent section at Kidd Creek has operated excellently since milling began in 1966. The bulk handling techniques are satisfactory. They have contributed substantially to good working conditions, economical practices and metallurgical efficiencies. The bulk handling features described should be considered in existing and proposed concentrators."

Flow field design is critical for PEM fuel cells. The flow field design can affect reactant distribution to the catalyst surface, water management, thermal management and current collection. Therefore, it has tremendous impacts on the fuel cell performance and durability as well as reliability and operational flexibility. In this paper, an optical method is used to study the reactant distribution in the flow field channels of two commonly used flow field designs, straight channel design and serpentine channel design. Images of the flow patterns are shown followed by discussions of the flow patterns.

The covering of a hydraulically filled goethite pond is discussed from a geotechnical point of view. The characteristics of the goethite were defined in order to allow a detailed study of the procedure for the construction of the cover on top of the soft material and a verification of the stability of the cover and side slopes after construction. These characteristics and the main results of the studies are given, as well as the experiences and observations made during the execution of the work. Finally, the monitoring plan, during and after construction, is also discussed and some results are given. The 'Design and Construct' contract form was used to allow the contractor to choose the optimum and most economical method to realize the closing of the pond, based on his experience with similar projects. The works were carried out between mid 2003 and the end of 2004. The paper will, amongst others, discuss the special method of working that had to be developed to allow the covering of the whole pond in a relatively short time period, without soil improvement methods such as vertical drains or stabilization by in situ treatment. Fill material was used to establish a platform on top of the soft material so that the cover liner and finishing layer could be installed on top of the fill layer. The 'floating roof' principle was used; subsidences were allowed to occur during the installation of the impermeable top liner and soil cover.

"For recycling LD slag into the steel making process, the phosphorous containing calcium silcate phases have to be removed from iron oxide phases. One possible technical solution could be magnetic separation in a wide range of susceptibilities from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic. To check the feasibility of magnetic separation the distribution of the magnetic susceptibility in size classes as well as the liberation of the phosphorous containing phase were evaluated by a new method combining two dimensional physical property analysis with QEMSCAN analysis. The particle size classes of energy controlled comminution products were subdivided into fractions of defined magnetic susceptibility using a hand magnet of well known field properties (pick up method). On the one hand the susceptibility classes were wet assayed on the other hand analyzed by QEMSCAN followed by data evaluation using iDiscover 5.3.1(FEI), which was adapted to the data structure of two physical properties (size and magnetic mass susceptibility). The results allow the comparison of mass based (3D) cumulative distribution of grades from the wet assays with the area based (2D) distribution from QEMSCAN analysis, in order to control a systematic (size dependent) stereological error for this special type of material. As the physical separation property forms a crucial parameter the results from the liberation analysis by QEMSCAN can be interpreted more profound with respect to an expectable separation result. Once the various mineral compositions of the particles are assigned to the physical properties the Henry Reinhardt chart serves to predict the best possible separation result and thus the feasibility of a separation technique.INTRODUCTIONThe two Austrian steel plants operated by voestalpine AG produce about 650,000 t (voestalpine 2014) of LD slag in the course of steel production from pig iron according to the basic oxygen process blowing oxygen in the converter by an oxygen lance. The process is also known as the Linz Donawitz (LD) steelmaking process. By the addition of lime (CaO), carbon, phosphorus, silica, manganese and sulfur, which are present in the molten pig iron, shall be oxidized and bound in the slag either as oxide or silicate phases, or leave the slag in the gaseous phase (CO). The average chemical composition of the investigated LD slag is given in table 1."

The choice of tool for the first well of an oilfield or gasfield is an important factor, given that we will be drilling with the same type of tool for the entire phase and explains why we need to have another type for comparison based on the efficiency of the tool and its ability to crush the rock, and the wear of different types of tools. Development of theoretical and practical tests to determine the optimal regime for drilling is required to take into account the characteristics of rock layers crossed. Classification of boring tools is based on the geometry of the teeth and depends on the hardness, the abrasiveness of rocks as well as their hydraulic system, but it is better to classify them according to the working conditions with a coefficient designating a discriminant. This is called physical characteristic of the drilling tool. The goal is to designate each element of the tool by a coefficient. Results were obtained from laboratory tests. Modeling the initial rate of progress by different types of tools allowed us to determine an adequate mathematical model of the speed initial progress in clean conditions. Using experimental data and statistics we have established the mathematical model of the average speed of progress as a function of time. With these equations we can determine the wear evaluation and analysis of these factors as an approach to classification according to their characteristics. The main equations for the selection of drilling tools will be based on the optimization of drilling parameters for each type of tool. After analysis, we choose the tool that gives a better forward speed with an optimal load and axial rotation.

"Nowadays, there is an increasing interest for realistic spring-block models capable of addressing precursor phenomena in catastrophic earthquake-induced landslides. By pre-defining the constitutive law between externally applied stress and induced local strain increments, the dynamic behaviour of the rock/soil slope can be studied by means of the distribution of slip events at the interface between the soil and the bedrock. It is shown that by relaxing the assumption of constant of externally applied stress rate and local strain increments, a robust 2D spring-block model can be formulated for studying triggered landslides. A cellular automaton is built in order to examine the dynamic behaviour and the stability of rock/soil slopes during the initiation of a landslide. The type and nature of the failure plane, as well as the triggering mechanism is studied. The different dynamic evolution modes of the slope can be mapped to specific shape parameters of the corresponding distributions of the incremental displacements. The proposed spring-block model can be used in order to understand, predict and minimize the impact of catastrophic landslides triggered by earthquakes.INTRODUCTIONEarthquakes have long been introduced as one of the major cause of landslides. Earthquake induced landslides are of great importance because they can cause considerable damage and life casualties. Existing analyses can provide landslide concentration, i.e. the number of landslide sources per square kilometer of surface area, as well as the distance from the earthquake source, which is related to the strength of shaking, the slope steepness, which is connected to shear stress, and finally the rock type, which is referred to material strength (Keefer, 1984). In spite of their great importance in social and economic life, earthquake-induced landslides are still considered as an open geotechnical problem. The dependence of the number and distribution of landslides on earthquake magnitude and ground shaking intensities is a crucial factor for the description and determination of the phenomenon. The hazardous types of earthquake-induced landslides, the most susceptible geologic materials and the reactivation of landslides originally triggered by nonseismic activity are some important topics for areas affected by landslides. Most of these areas present an irregular and asymmetric shape with respect to epicenters and fault ruptures, and also show a strong correlation with magnitude (Keefer, 1984, 2000). The number of landslides caused by an earthquake generally increases with increasing earthquake magnitude. Keefer (1984) presented a magnitude scale in order to quantify the number of earthquake-induced landslides. Malamud et al. (2004) have proposed an independent landslide-event magnitude scale on the earthquakes, based on the logarithm of the total landslides number associated with an event. The aforementioned studies try to relate the landslide magnitude scale to the visible effects of the triggering mechanisms."

Abstract- An application of logistic regression to mapping of gold potential in the Baguio district of the Philippines is described. Categorical map data such as lithologic units and proximity classes of curvi-linear features, based on spatial association analyses, are quantified systematically and used as independent variables in logistic regression to predict the probability for presence or absence of gold mineralization. Regression experiments to compare between using all independent variables that are associated spatially with the response variable and using only statistically significant independent variables are performed. The results of the regression experiments are similar; however, the use of all independent variables produces slightly optimistic results but better prediction rates for the known gold deposits in the test district. At least 68% of the ‘model’ large-scale gold deposits and at least 76% of the ‘validation’ small-scale gold deposits were predicted correctly. The predicted geologically favorable zones are also similar to delineated geochemically anomalous zones. The technique presented using logistic regression as a data integration tool is effective for geologically constrained technique of mapping mineral potential.

"The zinc deposits to be described are in Lemieux township a few miles south of the Tabletop mountains, in the central part of Gaspe peninsula, Quebec. Although they have not been worked, they constitute a potential source of zinc and lead and structurally are of considerable interest.GENERAL CHARACTER OF THE OCCURRENCEThe deposits are in sharp-walled quartz-carbonate veins and breccia zones carrying locally, and in varying amounts, sphalerite, galena, pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, and specularite. Those so far investigated strike generally north-south, have steep dips, and cut through sediments of Lower Devonian age, mostly calcareous argillites or siltstones. Wall-rock alteration is negligible.BROADER STRUCTURAL FEATURESThe principal known occurrences are in the south-central part of a dome structure measuring 6 by 5 miles. The argillaceous sediments are overlain, on the flanks of the dome, by sandstones and lavas. These have been stripped from the central part of the dome, revealing the veins in the argillites beneath. The veins formed after the volcanics, but the fractures and breccia zones in which the deposits formed are confined mainly to the argillite series, presumably because of the greater strength of the lavas.The argillite series is cut by dykes, sills, and small stocks of diorite and acidic 'porphyries' that are older than the veins.THE FEDERAL HILL AREAThe distribution of known veins is shown in Fig. 1. The characteristic features of the veins are well illustrated by the Federal Hill area shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, and described below."

The original JKMRC AG/SAG mill model was developed over 30 years ago and has been upgraded a number of times since then, with the current published version being the Variable Rates model that is now over 15 years old. Since this model was developed further enhancements have been derived, some of which are applied in-house and some which have yet to be incorporated. The published and the commercially available model in JKSimMet is currently undergoing a comprehensive overhaul with a vastly extended data base for model evolution and validation. Improvements developed within the AMIRA P9 project, in-house development and a number of collaborative projects, are being incorporated into the upgraded model structure. Enhanced capabilities will include: power-based breakage rates scaling; a far wider mill filling range (from 10% to 40%) that exhibits peak in throughput as mill filling increases; higher ball loads; improved pebble discharge function; improved slurry discharge function incorporating important mill design and operational influences; and the new size dependent breakage function. The model will also be able to accommodate some influence of liner design and multi-component ores (blends of hard and soft components). This upgrade is still a work in progress but substantial changes have been made to date.
