Magnesium additions to aluminum enhance strength and hardness, lowering density, and improving corrosion resistance. However, during melting and casting processes, significant amounts of magnesium are lost due to selective oxidation. Preventing these losses would reduce the production cost and improve the quality of the final product. The effects of strontium addition on the oxidation behaviour of aluminum-0.5% and 1% magnesium alloys were investigated by monitoring sample weight gains with time with a thermogravimetric balance at 750°C. Sample cross sections have been examined using Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscope.

In July 2012, Hatch Ltd. and Air Products & Chemicals Inc. completed construction and commissioning of a 4000 tpd O2 cryogenic air separation unit (ASU) for Barrick Gold’s Pueblo Viejo Project located in central Dominican Republic. The ASU produces high pressure gaseous oxygen, which is used for the oxidation of refractory sulphide ore within the pressure oxidation (POX) circuit. As a result of the project’s remote location and tropical climate, many challenges were faced over the course of construction, commissioning and start-up of the ASU. These challenges included adequate preservation of equipment due to dusty and humid site conditions, final assembly and erection of the cryogenic distillation columns on site, limited spare parts inventory/availability, and an unfinished power source for plant commissioning. This paper discusses the steps taken by Hatch and Air Products to successfully design, construct, commission and start up the largest stand-alone ASU plant for a POX application in the metallurgical industry.

"Niobec mine, a producer of pyrochlore concentrates since 1976, became a producer of ferroniobium in 1994 and achieved accreditation to the ISO 9002 standard in 1995. The goal of ISO 9002 is to ensure that the products supplied to clients regularly meet their specifications, through explicit work standards and procedures throughout the production process, from deposit appraisal to ferroniobium production.A key element of ISO 9002 implementation at Niobec consists of the quality control procedures applied to the raw materials: the ore fed to the mill and the pyrochlore concentrate fed to the reduction plant. These controls extend from exploration, deposit appraisal, mine planning and reserves estimation, mining, mineral processing and, finally, ferroniobium production. The implementation of ISO 9002 has allowed more efficient control of the quality of the final product sold to clients. It requires interactive team work, the role of the geologist being to relate all information pertaining to raw material and product quality to the geological framework of the deposits."

"A test to determine the amount of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore is described. Typical GRG results are given; possible uses are discussed. A case study of how the technology was used at Hemlo Gold Mines is presented.IntroductionUsing gravity to supplement either flotation or cyanidation is a well established practice in the gold industry. It differs from most recovery circuits in that most of the gold recovered by gravity would be recovered in any case by the circuit downstream, be it flotation or cyanidation. The economic justification of gravity is therefore based on small margins (for example. a net smelter return of gravity gold of 99%, as opposed to 94% by flotation). It was easily demonstrated when either flotation or cyanidation were relatively inefficient processes, and labour costs low (as gravity can be labour intensive). Over the past thirty years, the advent of better flotation machines (flash, column, high capacity), more effective collectors, and better control systems has increased flotation's metallurgical performance, thereby decreasing the incentive for gravity recovery. Cyanidation technology has undergone similar changes, with the advent of activated carbon, oxygen and lead nitrate addition, and improved impeller design.Today, gravity could remain an attractive option only inasmuch as it can be implemented with very low capital and operating costs. This has resulted in a relative shift away from gold gravity recovery (except for alluvial deposits), in the seventies and eighties. For example, as of the early nineties, gold gravity recovery has disappeared from the typical South African flow sheet. The advent of the Knelson Concentrator, at the beginning of the eighties, foreshadowed a resurgence of gravity recovery, as gold's grinding and classification behaviour (Banisi, Laplante and Marois, 1991) makes it possible to achieve adequate gold recoveries with very simple, Knelson based, gravity circuits (Laplante et al., 1994).Consider for example the Hemlo recovery circuit, made of a single 61 cm x 122 cm (2' x 4') screen, an automated 76 cm (30"") Knelson feeding a Gemeni table, to produce a 70-80% Au concentrate which accounts for approximately one fourth of the gold production (about 3 million grams per year). The low capital and operating costs make it possible to justify the gravity circuit on the basis of savings in other operating costs (e.g. fewer carbon stripping and reactivation cycles). Any improvements in recovery, which would at Hemlo be difficult to measure, would be additional benefits. Such a circuit is rapidly becoming a standard in Canadian and Australian operations.The justification for installing a gravity circuit must be first based on an estimate of how much gold it will recover (irrespective of what the potential benefits are). This is a function of the nature of the gravity circuit to be installed; however, Knelson circuits, by their very simplicity and efficiency, limit the options. This leaves the amenability of the ore to gravity recovery as the single most important parameter. Various approaches can be used to characterize this response (Woodcock, 1993). Introduction A NY study of the milling of ores from crushing to grinding, classification, and concentration and finally dewatering of the products involves solid particles which are either in contact with a gas or a liquid phase. The surface area of the solid and its characteristics constitute important parameters in all mineral dressing operations. The success of any particular operation is dependent on the interaction of the surface of the solid particles with the gas or the liquid phase. Particle size and specific surface (surface area per unit weight) continue to be important parameters in the flotation research associated with the adsorption of collector molecules or ions on mineral particles, as in the early years of mineral dressing research (1). In order to understand the mechanism of the flotation process, it is essential that the surface properties of the adsorbent be known.

In the fall of 1961, Cominco dis-carded its long-established system of feeding the lead blast furnaces by narrow-gauge tram and V-cars, and installed an elevated monorail bucket system. This system automatically loads buckets of sinter, along with the correct proportion of coke, and delivers them to any of several designated furnaces. Direct labour usage has been reduced by nine men per day; improved coke proportioning has been achieved; and a major safety hazard has been eliminated. Introduction I N THE fall months of l 961. the system of feeding the lead blast furnaces at the Trail, B.C., smelter of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited was altered from the tradition-al narrow-gauge railway and V-car method to one employing mono-rail carriers. The orebodies at Copper Mounta1n lie along and within a few hundred feet of the contact of an intrusive stock of gabbro with a series of bedded volcanic rocks of the Nicola formation. These. orebodies are all entirely within the volcanic series but in many cases the centre line of the orebody at depth is directly under the gabbro contact at the surface, due to a slight overhang of the gabbro. The gabbro and volcanic rocks are cut by a number of faults and fault zones which did not materially affect early mining operations, but, as undeground openings increased in size, the faults became more important factors in determining mining methods and procedure. Caving methods were adopted to take advantage of ground weakness in fault zones, and the effect of ground subsidence which resulted from the division of the ground 1nto large, independent blocks by faulting had to be considered in planning the sequence of mining of certain ore blocks. The faults have been divided into two classes: the longitudinal system and the cross faults, or 'breaks' as they are termed locally. In addition to the two classes of faults, the zones of parallel ore fracture also control mining procedure, but to a lesser degree, in regard to caving or ground subsidence. A third structural feature which influences mining procedure is the mine dyke system. The longitudinal or main fault system roughly parallels the gab? bro contact and is made up of a number of branches and auxiliary fractures. The main fault itself is essentially vertical, but there are a number of branches and fractures on each side of it which, though parallel m strike, may dip as flat as 50 degrees toward or away from the main fault. The full width of the main fault system has not been determined, but it is known to extend beyond the zone of mine workings. A marked schistosity follows the main fault and both schistosity and chloritic alteration have been noticed along the secondary faults of this system. Several prominent orebodies lie along the main fault and its branches. The influence of the main fault system on mining is probably related more to subsidence than to actual cavi.ng, although it is effective in both.

"Abstract- The Century mine in northwest Queensland,Australia, is a major sediment-hosted zinclead- silver orebody, located within the western Mount Isa Basin. Stratiform, carbonaceous shalehosted mineralization is developed within Proterozoic shale and siltstone sequences of the Lawn Hill Formation. CRA Exploration Pty Ltd (CRAE) discovered the Century deposit in 1990 and open pit mine development commenced in 1998 under the ownership of Pasminco Century Mine Limited (PCML). The deposit contains an identified mineral resource of 105 Mt @ 12.1% Zn + 1.7% Pb + 46 g/t Ag (Broadbent and Waltho, 1998) which is currently being mined at a rate of 5 Mt/y.In December 1998, an exothermic reaction was observed between explosives spilt onto shale drill cuttings from a blasthole. This reaction is referred to as ‘reactive ground’ and has the potential to cause premature detonation of explosives in a charged blasthole with catastrophic consequences. The incident led to a subsequent geological and geochemical assessment of the different rock types at the Century deposit and their potential reactivity with ammonium nitrate-based (AN) explosive products. This assessment was conducted in an attempt to characterize zones safe for blasting with uninhibited AN-based explosive products. A direct result of this study is a set of procedures outlining the use of different AN-based explosives in areas defined as potentially reactive or non-reactive for the different lithologies present. Black shales contained in both the waste and mineralized sequences contain the sulfide mineral pyrite (FeS2), which is thermodynamically unstable with AN contained in commonly used explosives. The potential reactivity of partially weathered pyrite can ultimately result in the decomposition of an AN-based explosive. It was determined that only pyritic black shales showed any potential to react with AN, irrespective of their position in the stratigraphic sequence. Other lithologies present at Century, including Proterozoic sandstone and Cambrian limestone, are classified as non-reactive with AN. This is a geological risk management situation present at the Century mine."

Although most in situ operations in Alberta do not encounter significant problems during resource extraction, there have been a few documented occurrences of oil or steam releases as a result of compromised caprock seals. The objective of the Oil Sands Caprock Integrity Project (OSCRIP) is to characterize the units above and below bitumen zones to determine which geological factors affect the quality of the caprock seal. In addition, geomechanical properties and stress measurements of the bitumen reservoir and overlying units will be examined to provide a better picture of the containment conditions in which in situ operations occur. The information from this study will aid regulatory staff and industry in determining the zone-specific geological and geomechanical factors that could affect the design, operation, and feasibility of in situ recovery projects. The OSCRIP study area (Townships 87 to 99 and Ranges 1 to 13, West 4th Meridian) encompasses the surface mineable area, the northeast extent of the Wabiskaw-McMurray bitumen deposit and the Clearwater Formation, as well as a wide band of the Devonian salt-dissolution zone. Regional geological mapping of the Cretaceous strata focuses on the spatial extent and thickness of the caprock seal. Mapping of the underlying Devonian strata is targeted at better understanding the potential effects of salt dissolution and collapse of overlying strata on the integrity of the caprock seal. Examination of LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) bare earth DEM in the study area has revealed localized depressions that may represent sinkholes rooted in subsurface collapse features in Devonian carbonate and evaporite strata. Mapping the location and understanding the timing of salt dissolution-related features and deformation in the Devonian strata will help address questions about the possible effect that geological structures, such as sinkholes, have on the integrity of the caprock, as well as the potential for localized variations in the stress regime of the bitumen zone and overlying units. The stress regime in units above 350 m is such that any induced fractures are believed to be horizontal, and therefore, there would appear to be no mechanisms that would allow these fractures to reach the surface. However, recent incidents have shown that vertical pathways can occur, linking the subsurface to the surface. The final phase of the project will evaluate the changes that may occur in the stress regime under thermal operating conditions in the study area.

Introduction A few years ago the name Katanga recalled, to those interested in copper, a far-off country in central Africa where deposits of huge size were beginning to pour a stream of copper into the world's markets. But no one heard of the adjacent part of northern Rhodesia as a potential copper region. It was then a bush-covered wilderness, with a few lonely, widely-spaced villages, and here and there a copper prospect that created but little outside attention. There was also one struggling mine whose development created pessimism. The low-grade carbonate outcrops of Rhodesia did not compare favourably with the rich carbonate ores of Katanga. And, since Katanga was mining only oxidized ores, it was then thought that this adjacent region likewise would contain only oxidized ores. The one mine that had been started, Bwana M'Kubwa, was working on low-grade carbonate ore at a loss. The outlook was not promising. But, a little over three years ago, the aspect changed. The vision of one far-sighted engineer embraced the possibility that here copper sulphides might underlie those low-grade carbonate croppings. His courageous associates furnished the capital; drilling commenced, and the great Roan Antelope mine rapidly emerged. In quick succession, the N'Kana, Mufulira, N'Changa, N'Changa Extension, and Chambishi mines were heard from. Prospecting and development are now proceeding apace, towns are being hewn out of the virgin bush, plants are being reared, and ramifying branch railways are being pushed out from the single line of steel that now connects Rhodesia with the coasts to the south. A great new copper-mining centre is in the making, about which the world will hear much in the future. As with most new mining camps, rumors abound regarding its ore possibilities; some are correct, some are erroneous, and reliable information unfortunately is all too scanty.

This paper will examine the challenges involved in ventilating and cooling South African mines, with particular emphasis on solutions to the issues of heat (generally associated with depth), mechanization and energy efficiency. Comparisons will be made with other international mining areas. Some of the deepest mines in the world are to be found in the South African goldfields. The Mponeng mine is approaching 4,000 m below surface, with virgin rock temperatures (VRT) of between 60°C and 70°C. Mining at these depths has only been possible with the use of large refrigeration plants supplying cold air, water and ice to the workings. In the Bushveld Igneous Complex, where most of South Africa?s platinum mines are located, similar VRTs are being experienced at significantly shallower depths. This is due to the different geothermal properties of the host rock between the two areas. Existing mines are being forced to go deeper and new underground mines are being planned and constructed in other areas with widely differing thermal conditions. South African metal mining has traditionally been labour intensive for historical reasons as well as for the narrow tabular nature of many ore bodies. Due to cost pressures and labour problems, some mines have been investigating the possibility of using mechanized equipment, both diesel and electric, to increase production and to improve efficiency. Studies have been carried out to determine the effect of the additional equipment on the overall ventilation system and some of the conclusions are discussed. The use of diesel equipment adds heat and pollutants to the ventilation air but, although electrical equipment has a lesser effect on the ventilation systems, it is generally less favoured due to claims of lower flexibility/manoeuvrability. Mechanization holds the promise of more concentrated mining activities but, with higher localized ventilation and cooling needs. Systems which will control the provision of air and cooling more effectively are required and are being implemented. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the South African economy experienced significant growth which was not matched by the growth in infrastructure. Consequently, at present there is a shortage of electricity generation capacity which affects large industrial consumers, including mines. Increasing levels of heat and mechanization will require more electrical energy for ventilation and cooling. There are many initiatives underway to save power or to shift consumption to periods of national low demand and these will be described.

"Background The preponderance of Canada's coal resources is located in areas remote from high demand domestic users and at some significant distances from deepsea ports. This places great demands on the transportation system and has forced the coal and the transportation industries to adopt highly efficient methods of handling the product and hauling it to market position. Most of the coal not consumed in minemouth thermal power stations is carried by rail over lines operated by the two transcontinental railway systems, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific. These rail networks are extensive and have the advantage (as compared to most other North American railways) of being able to handle coal movements from origin through to destination without interchange to other rail carriers. Coal SourcesWith exception of the coal produced in Cape Breton, Nova iScotia, all the significant shipping volumes in Canada emanate ifrom mines located in the three most westerly provinces. Figure I ishows the geographic distribution of the major mining operaitions shipping coal to domestic and export markets. The prinicipal routes and the tonnages carried (1980 calendar year) are ialso indicated. iThe 1980 shipping data are summarized in Table I. Saskatchewan lignite began moving from Bienfait to Thunder Bay by CP Rail unit trains in mid-1981 at the rate of one million tonnes per year. The product is handled through Thunder Bay Terminals and delivered directly to a nearby Ontario Hydro electrical generating station."

"IntroductionCrows Nest Resources Limited (CNRL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shell Canada Resources Limited, is nearing completion of its first coal project, located in southeastern British Columbia. CNRL shipped over 700,000 tonnes of thermal coal to foreign markets in 1982. With the completion of the metallurgical coal plant in December, 1982, shipments of both thermal and metallurgical coal will increase substantially in 1983 and will approach the anticipated operating capacity of 3.0 million tonnes in 1985. The Line Creek Mine lies some 25 kilometres north of Sparwood in southeast British Columbia (Fig. 1). The open-pit mine is located on top of Line Creek Ridge, with coal being hauled 16 km to the thermal and metallurgical coal preparation plants, situated adjacent to the already existing Canadian Pacific Railway. Most of the coal is moved by 108 car unit trains by CP Rail to coal ports in Vancouver, where it is loaded onto vessels destined for overseas markets. Some smaller scale car load shipments are moved by rail to contiguous markets in the Pacific Northwest. History The southeastern British Columbia area, known as the East Kootenays, is steeped in a rich coal mining heritage, dating back to the latter part of the nineteenth century. Predecessors of Crows Nest Resources Limited were instrumental in developing the rich coal reserves in the area. In 1887, William Fernie, a pioneer-cum-prospector recognized the potential of coal deposits in the East Kootenays. Spurred by the relentless push west of the Canadian Pacific Railway through the Crows Nest Pass area, Fernie recognized that it was just a matter of time before the steam locomotives provided him with his required market. That time arrived in 1897 when Fernie helped to form the Crows Nest Pass Coal Company and coal mining commenced at Coal Creek, near his namesake town of Fernie. During its almost 70-year history, this company produced over 48 million tonnes of steam coal and 8 million tonnes of coking coal. In 1965, the Crows Nest Pass Coal Company was re-named Crows Nest Industries, to better reflect its expanded interests into forest products, and it is the latter company which Shell Canada Resources Limited acquired in 1978. The extensive coal resources of Shell, in both Alberta and British Columbia, were rationalized into one group with the birth of Crows Nest Resources Limited to manage and develop the coal holdings."

Quest Rare Minerals Ltd. is developing their Strange Lake B Zone REE deposit located in Northern Quebec. An extensive batch bench scale testing program was launched to investigate open circuit rougher flotation performance under different conditions. The objective of the flotation study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of rejecting gangue minerals to flotation tailings while concentrating rare earth elements as well as yttrium, zirconium, and niobium into a concentrate suitable for further hydrometallurgical processing. Mineralization of interest at Strange Lake occurs within peralkaline granite-hosted pegmatites and minor aplite. The REE and high field strength element (HFSE)-bearing phases are hosted primarily in pegmatites as relatively fine-grained phases or pseudomorphs. The gangue phases comprise of quartz, feldspar, amphibole, and pyroxene. Potential ore minerals comprise predominantly of kainosite, gerenite, gadolinite, zircon, pyrochlore, and gittinsite. These complex mineralogical characteristics increase the difficulty for processing and provide a challenge for choosing the correct reagent scheme in rougher flotation. Process options including reverse flotation to reject the gangue minerals and de-sliming prior to the direct rougher flotation were investigated. Optimization trials were conducted using various reagent regimes and under different flotation conditions. Encouraging results were found using a combination of collector reagents supplied by Cytec Canada Inc.

"The TankCell® 300 forced air flotation cell designed and built by Outotec, with active volume of over 300 m3, was installed at Codelco’s Chuquicamata concentrator in September 2008. After that, a program was conducted, where the new cell was tested against the plant’s existing flotation cells of type TankCell® 160, with an active volume of over 160 cubic meters.Testing program was exhaustive and detailed. Grade-recovery curves for each setup were reported, along with recoveries by particle size. Secondly, operational characteristics like air feed and froth height setpoints, and power consumption are compared side-by-side. As the third topic, gas dispersion characterization included velocity mapping, holdup, bubble size and bubble surface area flux operating range. The fourth area of interest was the retention time distribution (RTD) of the 300 and 160 m3 cells in comparison. A detailed campaign using radioactive tracer tests was conducted to clarify this.All of the investigations mentioned above are reported in separate papers for more detail. The aim of this paper is to collect the key findings, and present them in real terms, always referring to operability and metallurgy of the cells. It is destined for people designing new plants and to those improving and expanding existing ones. The most frequently heard question is: will the new large cells operate at same efficiency as the smaller ones. In short, the answer is: NO. They operate at improved efficiency!INTRODUCTIONIn the last two decades of minerals processing, there have been three dominant trends of development in the flotation technology: equipment scale-up, cell characterization and circuit modeling. Equipment scale-up has been rapid in the past two decades. In the year 1990, the largest flotation cell in use was 50 cubic meters of size. This year, 300 cubic meters is the largest installed cell. Characterization of flotation equipment and circuits is a very popular subject nowadays and has helped many operations to improve their recoveries through better control strategies, for example by using optimized air feed and level control profiles (Gorain, 2005), (Doucet, Gomez, Finch, 2006), or through better maintenance (Coleman, Urtubia, Alexander, 2006). Characterization work is closely linked to circuit modeling. The aim is to produce sufficient amount of data to allow reliable model building. These models are then used to design new circuits and to improve existing ones. So in summary, these three lines of development have slightly different aims – from capital and operational cost to performance optimization. Ultimately, they converge in the same end result – maximizing the profitability of the operation. Following chapters will summarize the extensive test work and scientific studies at Codelco Chuquicamata. The aim was to compare a TankCell® 300 cell, with nominal volume of 300 m3, against two TankCell® 160 machines, with 160 m3 volume in each. The work should yield answers to questions: does the larger cell produce similar results – is the scale-up successful?"

The property of MacLeod-Cockshutt Gold Mines, Limited, is in the Little Long Lac area of the Thunder Bay Mining Division, Ontario, about four miles south of the Canadian National railway station of Geraldton. The town of Geraldton is about 170 miles east of Port Arthur and 22 miles west of Long Lac, which is on the main line of the Canadian National railway. The Trans-Canada highway passes through the property and during the winter season the road is maintained between Port Arthur and Long Lac. Electric power is supplied by the Hydro-Electric Commission of Ontario from their Cameron Falls plant and is distributed at 44,000 volts by a local transformer station. Early History The South orebody was discovered by diamond drilling in the spring of 1936. This is a porphyry contact orebody with major pyrite and minor arsenopyrite mineralization. Some gold is present in the 'free' state, but for the most part it is locked in the pyrite, with little or none in the arsenopyrite. Preliminary test work was based on comparing straight cyanidation with bulk flotation and cyanidation of the concentrates. The overall results by the two methods were found similar, but for economic reasons the flotation-cyanidation process was adopted. Before the mill came into operation, a new and entirely different type of orebody, consisting of massive sulphide lenses in banded iron formation, was discovered to the north of the existing workings. These bodies are an intricate mixture of pyrite and arsenopyrite, both carying gold.

Transportation of fluid and slurry (fluid and solid particle mixtures) in a pipe and annulus space has been the focus of numerous studies. There are different parameters to be considered when studying slurry transportation. These include slurry velocity or flow rates; fluid properties such as density and rheology; and solid particle properties including concentration, density, shape and size. Also the angle of the flow conduit, rotation of the pipe and possible eccentricity of the annulus are other factors which influence slurry transport characteristics. Although a number of analytical, numerical and empirical equations as well as numerical simulations have been developed for studying the flow and slurry transport characteristics, the results need to be validated against either field or lab data. As performing field tests is costly and time consuming, conducting simulations at the laboratory scale appears as a good alternative. Different flow loops have been designed to study slurry transport behaviour in different science and engineering disciplines including oil and gas and mining. However, few of these consider, in particular, cuttings transportation in small size annulus space. The flow characteristics appear to be very different when slurry travels within a small size annulus, in particular when the fluid velocity is high. In this study, a review of some of the existing slurry flow loops will be conducted. Then the details of a slurry loop, which has been designed and commissioned for the purpose of studying cuttings transport in a small size annulus space for applications in drilling mineral exploration wells using coil tube technology, will be presented.

The role of the interfacial electrical 'Condition on the adsorption of col-lectors on mineral surfaces has been studied by electrophoretic mobility and adsorption measurements made on zircon. From the investigation of the electrokinetic properties of zircon, H+ and OH-are seen to act as potential determining ions, thus controlling the electrical nature of this mineral. The isoelectric point of zircon occurs at a pH of approximately 5.0, and it is evident, therefore, that the zircon surface would be positively charged below a pH of 5.0 and negatively charged above this pH. The adsorption of collectors therefore de-pends strongly on the pH of the solution; anionic collectors are adsorbed on positively charged surfaces and cationic collectors on negatively charged surfaces. This, in turn, de-fines the effective flotation condition, with respective collectors, for this mineral. The above results have been correlated with the flotation behaviour obtained by the simplified flotation test using a modified Hallimond tube.
