La pyrométallurgie du cuivre est essentiellement une chaîne de trois étapes successives d’oxydation préférentielle du fer et du soufre et des impuretés moins nobles que le cuivre qui sont contenues dans le concentré de cuivre issu de l’usine de concentration du minerai, aussi appelée concentrateur. La Figure 1 illustre la chaîne complète d’élaboration du cuivre depuis la mine jusqu’au cuivre pur. La voie hydrométallurgique traite le concentré par lixiviation, c.à.d. par dissolution en phase aqueuse à température typiquement inférieure à 100 ou 150⁰C, alors que la voie pyrométallurgique traite le concentré par fusion à température de l’ordre de 1200 à 1300⁰C.

Dofasco is Canada?s 2nd largest steel manufacturer producing 4.5 million tons of flat rolled steel per year. They have revenues of over $3 billion and employ 7,000 people in their Hamilton, ON plant. Dofasco is North America?s most profitable steel producer and were recently ranked as the #1 steel maker in the world by Dow Jones. Motivation to Improve In the 1980?s the steel business was good. However, in the late 80?s and early 90?s things began to change. Globalization was beginning to influence the market, imports started arriving at lower prices and higher quality, hangover from the 1970?s inflation saw costs rising and prices dropping, there was a shift from a sellers to a buyers market, and shareholder returns were beginning to erode. Dofasco took a step back and evaluated their maintenance performance and found that they were operating in an environment where 70% of their work was reactive and only 30% was proactive. They also found that the rate of product quality improvement was flat and their average equipment availability was only 78%. At that point they realized that Equipment Reliability was key to improving product quality, production output, costs and shareholder return. They initiated a project to research, develop, and implement the most advanced maintenance practices and information technologies to achieve maximum equipment reliability.

"Lundin Mining’s Eagle Operation, located in Marquette County, northern Michigan consists of a mine and concentrator that processes a Ni-Cu-(PGE) ore. Mine production began in 2014 and is expected to achieve production of approximately 23,000 tonnes of Ni and 20,000 tonnes of Cu per year. The ore is trucked to the Humboldt Mill, where both a Ni and Cu concentrate is produced.XPS Consulting & Testwork Services (XPS) has assisted the team at Eagle since 2013. Prior to start up, the ore was piloted at the XPS lab in Sudbury, Ontario to demonstrate the concentrator flowsheet and establish flotation operating strategy. XPS consulting metallurgists worked closely with the Eagle team during the commissioning of the plant providing troubleshooting, sampling, metal balancing expertise and support. Finally, a series of monthly composites over a 6 month period was submitted for mineralogical characterization to assess plant performance, identify opportunities for improvement and to provide a baseline for the future operation.Lundin’s investment to test the ores ahead of mining and to team with XPS’s experienced mineral processing engineers to help commission the plant has led to the plant achieving concentrator production targets shortly after startup. The commitment to training and implementation of best practices, and a culture where ongoing testing is the norm, puts the Eagle Operation on sound footing for future operation.INTRODUCTIONLundin’s Eagle Mine is a subsidiary of Lundin Mining located in the upper peninsula of Michigan. The mine itself is an underground operation and the ore is trucked from the Eagle mine site 2 hours to the Humboldt mill.The ore is an ultramafic hosted high grade Cu Ni deposit and exists as either massive or semi massive sulphides. The high resource grade of Cu (2.49%) and Ni (2.93%) make this a valuable ore source. (Owen & Meyer, 2013) A metallurgical team was put together by Lundin to ensure the mill was designed and commissioned to optimize metallurgy in the shortest time from this valuable deposit. The commissioning plan targeted commercial production by Q1 2015."

The Canadian Nickel Division operating facilities in the Sudbury Area currently includes seven mines, two concentrators, and a smelter.For many years at all concentrators, improv0mcnts in metal recoveries have been continually under investigation. One area was to improve the flotation cell performance. This paper will deal with mechanical and operating modifications to the cells at the Strathcona and Falconhridge Ni-Cu sulphide concentrators, at the Sudbury Operations.One of the prime means to mineral beneficiation processing has been, and will continue to be, the basic froth flotation cell. The efficient operation of a flotation cell is the key to satisfactory metal selectivity and recovery. The essence of good design is simplicity. Changes to cell design can contribute to a significant improvement in metal recovery.Over the past 10 years, modifications to the flotation cells have contributed to an improvement of some 3-4” in mineral recovery. "DEVELOPMENT of the underground mine is carried out from a main ramp driven from surface to the 800 and 1200 levels and from a shaft sunk to 3050 ft. Sub-levels at approximately 100-ft vertical intervals, starting 300 ft above the 800 level, were collared from the ramp as it advanced and a considerable amount of development work was pursued. The lateral and ramp work provided an opportunity to train drift crews, test equipment and methods, assess ground conditions and advance the initial stope development. The development of an exhaust ventilation raise system closely followed the extension of the level development to the south end of the orebody (Fig. 26) . On completion of the shaft, temporary lip pockets were installed at the shaft stations on the 800, 12.00, 1600, 2000 and 2400 levels. The permanent loading pocket had been installed on the 2860 level as part of the shaft-sinking contract and the level had been connected to the 2800-level station by a small muck transfer raise. Development of the 2800-level area was given top priority at this stage. This included a 1000-ft cross-cut to the crusher location, the crusher excavation, storage bins, conveyor ways and a ramp to connect the 2800 level to the loading pocket, the rope changing station and the shaft sump. The development and installation of the rock handling system between the 2400 level and the shaft bottom was contracted to Macisaac Mining and Tunnelling Company, of Sudbury, Ontario."

"The decomposition of rare earth concentrates containing bastnasite and monazite by alkali solutions has been investigated. A slurry of the rare earth concentrate and the alkali solutions was calcined at different temperatures. The impacts of calcination temperature on the decomposition of rare earth minerals, the oxidation of cerium, the deportment of fluorine and phosphorous, and the adaptability of the method to the different grades of rare earth concentrate were all studied. A possible technique for comprehensive recovery is proposed in which the chemical elements such as rare earth, fluorine, phosphorus, calcium, iron and thorium could be recycled or recovered. INTRODUCTIONThe liquid alkali decomposition method is an important technique for the decomposition of mixed rare earth concentrates. The technique is relatively clean compared with the sulfuric acid roasting method. However, its operation is intermittent rather than continuous. The two-step solid-liquid reaction and the subsequent water washing make it not very suitable for mass production and application. An important reason for the disadvantage is that an additional process of ""calcium removal by acid leaching"" is needed for the technique. The content of calcium in Baotou rare earth concentrates is usually 6-12%. The requirement of the current technique is that the content of calcium should be reduced to about 0.2% after the calcium removal process. Otherwise, the decomposition and leaching of rare earth will be affected. Therefore, calcium removal by acid leaching is a necessity before the alkali decomposition process is carried out. Research on different alkali decomposition techniques has been conducted with prior calcium removal by acid leaching (Xu, 1995; Yu, 1993; Han, Li, Chang, Liu & Xu, 1985). There have been some investigations of direct decomposition of the bastnasite (Feng, Pan & Li, 1998; Zhao, Zhang, Yang & Liu, 2002)and monazite (Sun, Li, Li, Su, Zhao & Liu, 1998; Zhou, 2005) by alkali-liquid, however, all studies were carried out in solid-liquid reaction system, and continuous calcination studies have not been reported.This paper investigates the process of direct decomposition of Baotou rare earth concentrates by continuous calcination with concentrated alkali. Using the rotary tubular electric furnace, the mixture of rare earth concentrate and concentrated alkali solution were decomposed continuously. Satisfactory decomposition results were achieved. A method for clean processing and comprehensive resource recovery from Baotou rare earth concentrates is proposed."

A DEPOSIT of hematite occurs on Black island, lake Winnipeg, at a point known locally as Red Rock, on the south shore of the island directly across from Clements point. The mail boat from the Canadian Pacific Railway terminus at Riverton, crossing the lake to Manigotogan twice weekly, passes near Red Rock and provides a convenient means of transportation to this part of Black island (Figure 1). HISTORICAL The occurrence of hematite on Black island has been known for a long time. Dowling's report of 1898 states(1): "An iron-ore deposit on the south side has been known' for many years, and on Jeffrey's map of 1762, showing Canada and northern part of Louisiana, Iron island is shown a short distance south of the narrows, evidently the same as the Black island of today".

Abstract The Allard Lake ilmenite deposits, which are currently being developed on a large scale, occur as a series of dykes or lenticular, flat-lying bodies within the northeastern part of a large, oval shaped anorthosire mass of Precarnbrian age which lies with its long axis paralleling the gulf of St. Lawrence. The Lac Tio deposit, discovered by Kennco Explorations, Limited, in 1946, is the largest body of titanium ore of its type now known in the world. It contains upwards of 112,000,000 short tons of ilmenite ore averaging 32 per cent TiO2 and 36 per cent Fe. The ore is an aggregate of ilmenite with oriented microscopic blades of hematite. The deposits appear to be high temperature, late magmatic injections containing only a small amount of volatiles, and bear a genetic relationship to the anorthosite rocks in which they occur. * * * Introduction Recent developments on the ilmenite deposits in the Allard Lake district of Quebec indicate the probability of a major industry, and one which may make Canada the world's greatest producer of titanium pigments and, ultimately, of titanium metal. The presence of ilmenite in this district was first reported by the Quebec Department of Mines following a reconnaissance shore-line geological survey in the year 1941. The ensuing report by Retty describes the occurrence of a number of small ilmenite lenses about the shore of Allard lake and' along two smaller lakes in the vicinity. These showings were later staked by Toronto and Montreal interests who carried out a certain amount of development work, and were described in more detail by Longley for the Quebec Department of Mines. The claim groups were later optioned by Kennco Explorations, Limited, Canadian subsidiary of Kennecott Copper. None of the deposits in themselves constituted a sufficiently large body of ore to warrant the major construction expenditures necessary for their exploitation on a profitable basis. The surrounding anorthosite areas, however, were considered favourable for the possible occurrence of other ilmenite deposits

"Traditional geostatistical modelling methods are difficult to apply to heavy-tailed deposits because the extreme positive skew of the grade distribution leads to bias. The focus here is on an innovative method of modelling the high-grade population by conditionally simulating discrete volumes (nuggets) of gold with marked Poisson and Cox processes. Capping and other ad-hoc manipulation of the assay data is not required; however, an intensity map for the point processes is required. The method is demonstrated on a dataset from an epithermal deposit and demonstrates an improvement in reducing smearing and controlling the skew of the grade distribution.RÉSUMÉ Les méthodes traditionnelles de modélisation géostatistique sont difficiles à appliquer dans des gisements dont la distribution de la teneur est à queue lourde car l’extrême asymétrie positive de la distribution de la teneur génère des biais. Dans le présent article, l’accent est mis sur une méthode novatrice de modélisation de la population à haute teneur par la simulation conditionnelle des volumes discrets d’or (pépites) au moyen de procédés marqués de Poisson et de Cox. La limite d’utilisation et d’autres manipulations ad hoc des données ne sont pas requises; toutefois, il faut une carte des intensités pour le processus ponctuel. THE first discovery of lead and zinc ore on Calumet island was made in 1893 by John Lawn, who then staked a portion of the property now owned by Calumet Mines, Limited. His discovery was developed by James and Calvin Russell, who are said to have shipped a few tons of sorted ore, averaging 39 per cent zinc, 13 per cent lead, and 11 oz. silver per ton. In 1898, the property was being operated by the Grand Calumet Mining Company, who mined and shipped, for treatment in a Belgian smelter, 1,100 tons of ore averaging 32 per cent zinc, 9 per cent lead, and an unreported content of gold and silver. After some indecisive exploration by an American syndicate in 1907, the property lay idle until1910, when the Calumet Metals Company-later reorganized as the Calumet Zinc and Lead Company-re-commenced exploration. After sinking an 85-foot shaft-the McDonald shaft-and doing a few hundred feet of drifting and cross-cutting, this Company, in 1912, erected a 150-ton daily capacity gravity-concentration plant, in which some 800 tons of ore, mined from the McDonald shaft and Bowie pit, were milled. Owing to very disappointing mill recoveries, the property was shut clown and-after several years of idleness-in? 1916 the mill and mining plant were destroyed by fire and the Company went into bankruptcy. In 1918, an unknown operator shipped to an Omaha, Nebraska, smelter 22 tons of ore, probably sorted from the dumps of the Ste. Anne shaft and Galena pits, averaging 44 percent lead, and 0.26 oz. gold and 61 oz. silver per ton. The British Metals Corporation (Canada), Limited, in 1926, optioned the property. They unwatered the McDonald shaft and, after doing an additional 300 feet of cross-cutting and drifting on the 85-ft. level, estimated there were some 33,000 tons of ore between this level and the surface. Surface exploration, including trenching, on other showings on the property gave discouraging results and the option was dropped.

INTRODUCTION Eighteen years ago about half a dozen experienced prospectors moved from northern Ontario to northwest Manitoba to prospect 'greenstone' areas shown on geological maps of .parts of northern Manitoba prepared by J. B. Tyrrell, D. B. Dowling, and Wm. Mclnnes. Gold-bearing quartz was soon discovered by these men in this new field, and in succeeding years many more prospectors entered the district. A number of the pioneers are still prospecting, and since 1913 mineral deposits have been discovered each year in widely separated areas of the large district extending 150 miles eastward from the 102nd meridian and 60 miles north of latitude 54°30'. The majority of the discoveries, however, have been made near Schist, Elbow, Wekusko, and Kississing lakes. One hundred or more mineral occurrences of some merit are known, the main types being sulphide replacement bodies containing nickel-copper or copper-zinc and gold-bearing quartz veins. Some underground exploration or diamond drilling has been completed on 25 or more of the prospects. Up to the present, three ore-bodies, namely, Flin Flon, Sherritt-Gordon, and Mandy, have been proved. Of these, Flin Flon, the largest, is estimated to contain from 16,000,000 o 19,000,000 tons of copper-zinc ore carrying some gold, silver, and lead. Next in importance in regard to tonnage is Sherritt-Gordon, with a calculated reserve of nearly 5,250,000 tons of copper-zinc ore carrying less than $1.00 combined gold and silver.

"Archean lode gold deposits of both vein and chemical sedimentary types typically have major enrichments of certain rare elements, including Au, Ag, As, Sb, B, W, Se, Te and Bi, coupled with low or negative enrichments of the more abundant and mobile base metals, Cu, Pb and Zn. On the other hand, in massive base metal sulphide deposits Au, Ag, Cu, Zn and in some instances Pb are all enriched by a factor of 200 to 2000 t:'Jf'1pared to background and there is no large separation of gold relative to the base metals.The fluids from which gold was precipitated in veins were at temperatures of 320 to 480°C, at lithostatic pressure, had significant C02, and Na """" K; whereas the fluids which generated base metal deposits were at 250-300°C, at hydrostatic pressure, had C02 < < H20 and Na > > K.Many lode gold deposits are characterized by K, C02 and Si additions to their enveloping rocks, whereas base metal deposits typically have a fixation of Fe, Mg, Si and S in footwall rocks. Lode gold deposits may also have a relatively large halo of low-temperature oxidative, sadie spilitization in enclosing volcanic rocks, where seawater has later streamed into cooling stocks or flows that have initially acted to focus gold mineralizing fluids along thermal contraction fractures. The submarine environment is one hydrologically appropriate for the mixing of two initially independent hydrothermal systems, and the blending of their separate characteristics. Hence, lode gold and base metal massive sulphide deposits appear to be products of two distinctly different crustal and hydrological regimes. The former involves a high-temperature, high-pressure discharge of fluids which probably were generated during dehydration accompanying burial and progressive accumulation of volcanic-sedimentary sequences, with an additional influence of marine water in the near-sea-floor environment. The latter represents thermally driven convection of ocean water at lower temperatures and under hydrostatic conditions.Auriferous fluid systems with only minor base metal content could plausibly be generated during dehydration accompanying burial and metamorphism, when the water-to-rock ratio is low and halogen availability is limited by crustal abundance (- 60 ppm Cl). These two factors may constrain the uptake of the abundant base metals into fluids, but the solubility of rare elements is not constrained by limited fluid; and preferential uptake of Au along with other rare elements may be promoted if such elements compete more successfully for the limited halogens than the base metals, and/or have an alternative complexing agent such as CO or C()j-."

"Abstract - Traditionally, the emphasis in ore and reserve inventory has been to provide fairly simple definitions and presentations for reporting to shareholders and the investing public. The recent introduction of the mineral resource category aims to take into account the "part of the deposit that cannot yet be produced or extracted legally and profitably." Recent proposals still place insufficient emphasis on relating resource/reserve reporting definitions more closely to the needs of mining and exploration operators for the estimation and inventory of these basic material assets.In most schemes, significant ambiguities and shortcomings remain. These concern the potential economic interest of resources, the concept of continuity which is fundamental to the estimation of volumes, mass and grades, the objectives of the production feasibility study and the requirements of the geology, engineering and economic appraisals leading to it, and the "availability" of the permits required to start mine development. Up to now, no industry-wide formal consensus has yet been reached for any of these steps, nor for reconciliation between successive statements.A resource/reserve inventory scheme is presented here that is based on ISO 9000 principles and the Australasian system. Explicit criteria and transition points are proposed to define resource and reserve. Similarly, appropriate criteria are proposed to classify the three mineral resource and two ore reserve categories, based on geological and value continuity and on the objectives of the feasibility study. This scheme offers a way to develop ISO 9001 certification of resource/reserve estimation procedures for mining operations and supply exploration companies with an appropriate inventory system, to allow better information for the shareholders and the investing public.Résumé - L’objectif des inventaires des minerais et des réserves est, depuis le début du siècle, de fournir des définitions simples et d’ordre général visant les actionnaires et le public investisseur. L’introduction d’une catégorie de « ressources minérales » fournira un cadre tenant compte de la "portion d’un gisement qui ne peut encore être extraite ou exploitée légalement et à profit." Cependant, les propositions récentes de systèmes d’inventaires ne comportent pas des définitions des ressources et réserves qui tiennent compte suffisamment des besoins des opérateurs en exploitation et en exploration minière.La plupart des systèmes comportent des ambiguïtés et des carences. Citons la susceptibilité d’exploitation commerciale des ressources, la continuité qui est au centre de l’estimation des volumes, masses et teneurs, les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité de la mise en production, le niveau requis des travaux de géologie, d’ingénierie et d’économique qui y mènent, ainsi que la disponibilité des permis dont dépend la mise en production. Il n’y a jusqu’à maintenant aucun consensus dans l’industrie sur ces points, ni sur des procédures de réconciliation entre les estimations successives.Le système d’inventaire des ressources/réserves proposé ici s’appuie sur la structure ISO 9000 et le système australien. Des critères et des points tournants explicites sont établis pour définir les ressources et les réserves. De même, les définitions des trois catégories de ressources et deux catégories de réserves, s’apparent sur la continuité de la géologie et des teneurs et sur les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité. "On August 8, 1989, the Minister of Finance released a technical paper which sets out many of the details of a proposed 9% federal value-added tax to be called the ""Goods and Services Tax"". The GST, which is scheduled to be implemented with effect from January 1, 1991, will affect all Canadians in different ways and to varying degrees. The mining industry itself should, by and large, benefit from the new tax.IntroductionOn January 1, 1991, it is proposed that the existing federal sales tax will be replaced by a new sales tax - the Goods and Services Tax (GST). GST will be leviedat a rate of 9% on most goods and services consumed in Canada.How it will WorkThe GST will be a tax on the final consumption of goods and services. It differs from a retail sales tax in that it will be collected throughout the production and distribution chain. However, the net effect of the tax paid on a particular good or service will be equivalent. The example above (next column) illustrates the application of the GST to the production and sale of a chair.Illustration of GST for a ChairEssentially, the total tax will equal 9% of the sale price to the final consumer. However, GST will be collected on the value added at each stage of the production and distribution chain . What will be TaxedVirtually all goods and services will be taxed. These programs have led to the discovery and the development of deposits such as architectural granite, graphite and dolomite, and have also led to inventories of occurrences and prospects of wollastonite, silica, calcite, dolomite, alumina silicates and rare earths. The deposits discovered lately are presently being quarried or will be in the near future. The most promising occurrences and prospects have been claimed."

"This paper gives an insight into the various processes available to treat gold ores. A brief overview is given of the various types of refractory gold ores. Particular emphasis is given /0 comparing the costs of oxide vs refractory gold ore processes, inclusive of grinding through to dore bar.HistoryThro ugh time gold has been recovered from the earth&apos;s crust by various mean s. Five major historical steps can be identified for metallurgical processing as shown in Table I .Gravity concent ration started with, for example, river bed panning and developed to more sophisticated processes such as the Johnson concentrator, belt concentrator and jigs. The South African gold fields were a major developer of gravity concentration processes during the first half of the twentieth century.As coarse free gold became depleted, stamp milling, in conjunction with amalgamat ion , was developed. Basically, rock was crushed under large mechanical hammers an d the gold collected in mercury . The mercury was then evaporated in a retort to leave sponge gold for further fire refining.As deposits became deeper and gold finer, the gold became more difficult to recover ; fine grinding was required to liberate the gold. In the 18905, MacArthur and the Forrest Brothers of Glasgow, Scotland, introduced the cyanide pro cess for dissolution of gold and its subsequent precipitaiton by means of zinc. This process, in vogue until the early 1970s, was commonly referred to as the Merrill-Crowe process for recovering fine gold .Activated charcoal was used as a means of recovering gold from solution in the 1880s, especially in chlorination plants in Australia( l). Introduction Stamp-Milling and amalgamation is, perhaps, one of the oldest processes of recovering gold from its ores. Many papers, theses, and textbooks have been written on the subject of stamp-milling practice in general, but, to my knowledge, there have been no publications describing the modern stamp-mill as designed, developed, and operated in Nova Scotia. Although it may be said that the gravity stamp-mill is the most primitive, and perhaps the crudest, crushing machine in existence, it is at the same time the most satisfactory all-round milling and amalgamating device yet contrived. Originating in Saxony, and used in North America first in Virginia and Georgia, the stamp-mill, in a primitive form, later found its way to California and Colorado. Here, it speedily developed from an affair of wood shod with iron, and operated with the crudest gearing, to substantially its present form. Briefly, it consists (see Figure 1) essentially of a series of hammers (the stamps), which fall upon a mixture of ore and water contained in a cast-iron box (the mortar). The resulting crushed ore (the pulp) is splashed out through a screen on the front of the box. For some years after the discovery of gold in Nova Scotia, in 1861, the ? arrastra and Chilean mill were used to recover the gold from the rich ores. The stamp-mill followed, and various types were used, principally the California and Gilpin County types. Then, in 1895, Mr. M. R. O&apos;Shaughnessy, one of our foremost amalgamators, conceived the idea of a new type of stampmill, which has since become standard in Nova Scotia gold mines. This mill, unique in its design and operation, is specially adapted for the most efficient extraction and recovery of gold as it occurs in our Nova Scotian ores. It is commonly known as the Underwater Feed type, as opposed to the usual Overwater or Top Feed type, and it may be rightly termed The Nova Scotia Self-Classifying Stamp Amalgamation Mill. It is conceded by experienced mill-men that it is superior to any other type of mill for recovering the very coarse and granular gold typical of the ores of this Province. The particular installation and practice to be described in this paper is that of the Guysborough Mines, Limited, at Goldenville, Guysborough county. Emphasis will be laid on certain operating innovations of extreme simplicity and high efficiency.

The diamondiferous Drybones Bay kimberlite pipe is the largest pipe (900 m by 400 m) discovered to date in the Northwest Territories. The pipe intrudes granodiorite of the Archean age Defeat Pluton and contains crater, reworked crater (epiclastic) and diatreme facies kimberlite. In-situ measurements of seismic p-wave velocity were recorded with in-line refraction arrays over representative areas. Refractions from fresh kimberlite were recorded over epiclastic facies kimberlite in the eastern portion of the pipe and returned an average velocity of 4300 m/s. Refractions from weathered kimberlite were recorded on all lines and returned velocities ranging from 1900 m/s to 2200 m/s. Granite surrounding the pipe returned an average velocity of 5400 m/s. The results indicate that there is a definite contrast in seismic velocities between kimberlite and country rocks at Drybones Bay and suggest that seismic refraction surveys may be an effective means of screening kimberlite targets in glaciated areas underlain by igneous or metamorphic rocks.

"IntroductionThe Key Lake uranium-nickel deposits are located within a Mineral Lease centred at latitude 57 ° 12' north and longitude 105 °39' west along the southeastern rim of the Athabasca sedimentary basin in northern Saskatchewan, approximately 240 km north of La Ronge (Fig. 1). Access is provided by an allweather provincial highway from Pinchousc, situated about 200 km to the south, and a private airstrip maintained at the mincsitc.These deposits have been developed by Key Lake Mining Corporation on behalf of the Saskatchewan Uranium Joint Venture. Participants in the joint venture include Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation (50%), Urancrz Exploration and Mining Limited (33 1/3 %) and Eldor Resources Limited (16 2/3 %).Considerable geological work has been conducted on the Key Lake orebodies and reported in summary papers published by Dahlkamp and Thn, (1977), Dahlkamp, (1978), Gatzweiler eta/., (1979) and Kirchner el a/. , (1980). However, intensive geological research is ongoing, particularly since many problems regarding ore genesis and controls remain unresolved . Exploration History and DevelopmentThe events (Gatzweiler eta/., 1980) which led to the discovery of the Key Lake ore bodies began in the summer of 1971 by following up on the reports of airborne radiometric anomalies and anomalous radon values in the Zimmer Lake water situated approximately 5 km to 6 km to the southwest. This work succeeded in locating a few high-grade uranium and nickel-bearing boulders associated with esker material. An integrated program, consisting of various geochemical and geophysical surveys along with diamond drilling, culminated in the discovery of the Gaertner orebody during July 1975. Subsequent fence drilling across the strike extensions of this ore structure located the Deilmann deposit, approximately I km to the northeast, in June 1976"

"Laboratory testing using industrial electrowinning solutions was performed to determine the best Faradic cell efficiency for copper cathode recovery. The variables tested were solution flow rate, recycle ratio, reagent addition combinations of guar and thiourea, and addition amount of acid mist suppressant CAL FAX DBA-70. The ideal flow rate was determined to be 37.85 litre/min. Additionally, the ideal recycle ratio was determined to be 10:1. The reagent addition scheme from testing which showed the highest efficiency was with 680 g/tonne guar of cathode copper won and with 135 g/tonne thiourea of cathode copper won. These values for reagent addition only reflect the best efficiency and should not be assumed to be the best reagent concentration for copper purity. The amount of foaming agent that showed the best efficiency was the test with 2 ppm of foaming agent. Again this amount of reagent is based on efficiency and should not be taken as the amount of reagent that does the best acid mist suppression. Additional proprietary surface characterization work indicates these additives may have enhanced the cathodic reduction surface morphology of some noble minor impurities. Subsequently, these operating parameters were introduced into the plant operation and proved successful after their implementation.BACKGROUNDCopper electrowinning has become a dominant technology for the production of marketable high grade copper cathode products. The literature is robust with applications, optimizations, additives and developments in this field (e.g., Classens & Harris, 1990; Pfalzgraff, 1999; Tozawa, Su, & Umetsu, 2003; San Martin, Otero, & Cruz, 2005; Houlachi, Edwards, & Robinson, 2007; Romero, Avila, Fester, & Yacher, 2007; Marsden, 2008; Beukes & Badenhorst, 2009; Vainio & Weatherseed 2009; Bender, 2010; Joy, Staley, Moats, Perkins, Uhrie, & Robinson, 2010; Khouraibchia & Moats, 2010; Moats, 2010; Rutledge & Anderson, 2015).Tests of forty hours duration and at room temperature were performed for this project using samples of actual industrial electrowinning solutions. These industrial solutions were comprised of 60 g/L Cu plus 65 g/L Ni, 3 g/L Fe, and 30 g/L free sulfuric acid. Other confidential minor impurities were also present including some solubilized precious metals. The testing apparatus utilizing stainless steel anodes and cathodes is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2."
