"AECL Research has constructed an underground laboratory for the research and development required for the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. The experimental program in the laboratory will contribute to the assessment of the feasibility and safety of nuclear fuel waste disposal deep in stable plutonic rock.In 1988, AECL extended the shaft of the Underground Research Laboratory (URL) from the existing 255 m depth to a depth of 443 m in cooperation with the United States Department of Energy (USDOE). The project, which involved carrying out research activities while excavation and construction work was in progress, required careful planning. To accommodate the research programs, full-face blasting with a burn cut was used to advance the shaft. Existing facilities at the URL had to be modified to accommodate an expanded underground facility at a new depth. This paper discusses the design criteria, shaft-sinking methods and approaches used to accommodate the research work during this shaft extension project.IntroductionThe Underground Research Laboratory (URL), a major geotechnical research facility, has been developed by AECL Research, 120 km northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The URL is part of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program (CNFWMP), which is assessing the concept of nuclear fuel waste disposal in a vault deep in stable plutonic rock of the Canadian Shield (Hancox, 1986). The URL provides a representative environment to conduct a wide variety of geotechnical research relevant to nuclear waste disposal. Extensive characterization and monitoring programs were carried out prior to construction and will continue during operation. The operating phase experiments began in 1989 and will continue until the year 2CXXl (Simmons, 1990). Figure I shows the present extent of the URL facilities and the proposed future development."

"Aspects of materials, design and operation of suspension equipment is dealt with, hazard, fatigue and special metallurgical properties of certain steels to resist are described, as is the effect of temperature in service modifying the properties of some steels to resist stress concentration and propagation of cracks.The influence of steady impact and fatigue loading and its results are described. Control of manufacture including nondestructive testing is outlined and acceptance parameters and strength calculations are given. Quality requirements and control in manufacture are outlined. A short description of the overwind detaching hook, together with illustrations of the operation of detachment are presented.MaterialsWinding engine ratings of 8000 h .p. and large capacity shafts 2000 m in depth (4000 m depths have already been reached and it may be necessary to go to 6000 m) and up to ten conveyances are not uncommon today. Loads of 100 or even 200 tons hoisted at low speeds are possible within the near future. Some of these appliances are designed to protect lives and installations in hazardous conditions when, due to human or mechanical fault, a malfunction occurs in the system. In addition, such equipment includes suspension gear of various kinds designed to anchor and apply high mechanical tensions to numerous steel ropes installed in shafts necessary either for the safe passage of conveyances or for balancing purposes when heavy loads are in motion.No unique metallurgical problems are presented in underground mining operations, but they have two special characteristics that influence the metallurgical aspects of the de sign of suspension gear and other equipment concerned in the transport of men and materials. (1) Any uncontrolled release of energy caused by the unexpected failure of a component is more likely to injure personnel and cause costly damage to installations in the narrow confines of an underground mine shaft. (2) Some mechanical equipment in mines, tends to be overloaded in service and suffer plastic distortion."

"The maintenance records for AL-60 airlegs at Falconbridge Ltd. are used to demonstrate some of the procedures for the analysis of such data.The data are not representative of pure failure s of one type or another. In fact, the records are for the undefined pseudo-failures which are usually found in industrial operations. However, because the machines are brought to the shop only when inoperative, the individual recorded components are treated as failures. Manual calculations are conducted to show the analysis of variance (ANO VA) approach to determine whether certain data can be combined; only a limited number of the 206 machines being considered. The manual procedures continue with the weighting of the suspensions; i.e. terminations f or reasons other than the failure of the given component. After the data are sequenced in the proper order, the nature or pattern of the data is determined using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test.It is recognized that these manual examples must be replaced by compute r methods 10 process voluminous data of this nature. Such programs are developed and available. However, a program called RELCODE is used in this case to correspond to the manual examples and to take into account the suspensions. These analytical procedures form the basis for those studies required for good maintenance management."

"Australia's prosperity relies significantly on income generated from exports of resources and agricultural products. In 1989-1990, coal was Australia's most valuable export commodity, contributing. A $5.7 billion or 14% of all export income.The abundance and quality of its coal resources and the proximity of Australia to the rapidly developing economies of Southeast Asia were significant factors that encouraged export-oriented growth and investment and will continue to do so. On the other hand, the 1980shighlighted the sensitivity of the industry to international changes in supply and demand, currency and socio-political forces.Following many years of disappointing returns for investors, mainly as a result of falling Australian dollar coal prices, resolve will be necessary to maintain competitiveness with resource-rich nations. In recent years, operators, unions and governments have begun to embark on a long overdue rationalization of domestic issues in a bid to increase productivity and reduce costs.The nature of mining operations is also changing; deeper surface mines and the growth of longwall mining will require the development of new technology and skills. Other challenges emerging from the international environmental debate will require that Australia responds appropriately to demands for cleaner fuels, energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.The future development of the Australian coal industry will therefore be influenced by its own ability to become more efficient and mature in the production of quality coal products and through rational international response to environmental questions."

"The kuroko deposits, which are extremely variable in size, comprise both stratiform layers of clastic sulphide particles and cross-cutting vein and disseminated components. The ores lie on the flanks of rhyolitic lava domes which have risen from a postulated subvolcanic magma chamber that provided cupriferous hydrothermal solutions and also acted as a heat source driving ground-water convecting cells. The polymetallic sulphides precipitated initially in explosion craters, pipe fillings and feeder veins as rising hydrothermal solutions mixed with sea water. As sulphides clogged the plumbing system, minor phreatomagmatic explosions produced layers of sulphide fragments on the adjacent sea floor. One to ten repetitions of this process produced multiple fragmental sulphide beds. Each deposit formed in a relatively short space of time, because only minor tuff beds are intercalated in spite of active volcanicity in the region. In this model, the heated ground waters convecting through thick piles of acidic pyroclastic rocks leach the zinc, lead and barium later deposited as kuroko ores. As the subvolcanic pluton cools, the supply of silica and copper wanes and the minor counter-circulation cells above the pluton are replaced by main cell fluids bearing zinc, etc. This change in solution flow is abrupt rather than gradual, as the plumbing system is somewhat disrupted by the magmatophreatic explosions that create each ore layer.IntroductionKnowledge of the kuroko deposits ha s greatly expanded during the 25 years since modern recognition of their volcanogenic origin. However, one aspect of the ore s, which may be of unique importance in their genesis, has received little attention. That is the fragmental character of much o f the sulphide ore, which was briefly referred to in a previous publication (Clark, 1971) and is examined in more detail by Barton (1978). Most researcher s have concentrated their attention on or e deposition above and beyond the vent, which is inconsistent with the geology."

"The Noranda Process at the Horne Division ofNoranda Mines Limited now smelts approximately 350,000 short dry tons of concentrate a year, which is 40% of the total smelter throughput. Campaigns are averaging 200 days and refractory consumption is much lower than in the conventional smelter.In this paper, details ofrecent operation are given, together with updated projections for operation with higher levels of oxygen enrichment.IntroductionThe Noranda continuous smelting process has been in operation at Noranda, Quebec, for six years and in that time it has smelted a million and a half tons of concentrate. It is currently smelting 1,200 to 1,250 tons per day of concentrate on an instantaneous basis"" and it is handling approximately 40% of the Horne smelter throughput.This paper will describe the current operation of the process and the improvements that have been made since 1976, when the process was described by L.A. Mills et al.lSince early in 1975, a high-grade matte averaging 73% copper has been produced, which is then sent to the converter aisle for final treatment. All the information in this paper refers to the operation of the process in the matte mode .Early in 1978, Kennecott Copper Corporation started up their new smelter near Salt Lake City, Utah , which has three Noranda Process reactors operating with high oxygen enrichment of the tuyere air (2). These furnace s incorporate some design improvements, which will be described briefly."

Cytec has developed a new organophosphorus based solvent extraction (SX) reagent for rare earth separations. The new product, CYANEX® 572, has been formulated to allow efficient extraction while minimizing the strip acid requirements. The optimization of formulation strength is expected to significantly reduce the operating costs of these circuits. Modeling capabilities for CYANEX® 572 (similar to those used successfully in Cu and Co/Ni SX) have also been developed to aid in the design and optimization of the SX circuits. Simulations will be shown comparing CYANEX® 572 to a traditional rare earth extractant.

"Abstract -Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within the layered gabbro zones of the upper parts of the Bell River Complex, Matagami, Québec and the Lac Doré Complex, Chibougamau, Québec. The vanadium-rich horizons are well defined on the ground and in aeromagnetic surveys by their high magnetic susceptibility; consequently, magnetic susceptibility can be an indicator of vanadium mineralization. The main oxide minerals are ilmenite and titanian magnetite, containing 20% to 70% of volume and the ratio of titanian magnetite to ilmenite is relatively constant, ranging from about 1:1 to 2:1. Their sizes are less than 5 µm to greater than 1 mm to 2 mm, occurring as coarse- to medium-grained subhedral crystals intergrown with cumulate silicate minerals (plagioclase, pyroxene, etc.). Electron microprobe analyses indicate that the ilmenite grains are mineralogically and compositionally homogeneous and have low V contents (average 0.18% equivalent V2O5). In contrast, the titanian magnetite grains are inhomogeneous, consisting of trellisworks of ilmenite lamellae in Ti-poor, V-rich magnetite [less than 2 wt% TiO2, and 1.41% equiv. V2O5 (1.16% V2O3) for 20 analyses]. Thus, the magnetite is the principal ore mineral of vanadium; it hosts vanadium in the form of V3+, not V5+, as is commonly and erroneously reported. We have also devised a flowchart for the beneficiation of vanadium-titanium ores. Sommaire - La minéralisation de vanadium se trouve dans des horizons riches en minéraux oxydés de la partie supérieure des zones de gabbros lités des Complexes de la Rivière Bell, Matagami, Québec et du Lac Doré, Chibougamau, Québec. Des horizons riches en vanadium ont été bien définis sur le terrain et dans les levés aéromagnétiques par leur susceptibilité magnétique élevée; conséquemment, la susceptibilité magnétique est l’indicateur directe du contenu en vanadium. Les principaux minéraux oxydés sont l’ilménite et la magnétite titanifère, contenant 20% à 70% du volume et le rapport de magnétite titanifère à ilménite est relativement constant, allant d’environ 1:1 à 2:1. A brief account of economic developments in and around northeastern Alberta is presented and mention is made of mining and industrial developments currently of interest in the area. Planned and projected operations are briefly discussed for this region. The history of geological surveys and mining activities in the Shield area of Alberta and the adjoining parts of Northwest Territories and Saskatchewan is traced. Reassessment of the presently-known economic picture of northwestern Canada in conjunction with some recent information on Precambrian structures of northeastern Alberta points to some interesting mining possibilities, particularly in and around that province.

One of the requirements for the successful waging of war is an unlimited supply of iron ore. In the spring of 1941 the demand for iron ore was expected to exceed the supply. This was particularly so in the case of high-grade lump iron ore, essential to the open-hearth process of making steel. The bulk of Canada's iron ore was imported from the United States. At this time, Canada was making every effort to conserve United States funds for more vital purchases. For these reasons, the development of Canadian iron ore resources became of prime importance. Several companies undertook investigations and one of these examined the old Josephine deposit. Location The Josephine property is in the district of Algoma, in the Michipicoten area of the Sault Ste. Marie mining division of Ontario. It is 120 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie and 20 rail-miles east of Michipicoten harbour, on lake Superior (see Figure 1). Transportation in the area is furnished by the Algoma Central and Hudson Bay railway. The Michipicoten branch of this line passes within a mile of the Josephine mine. Michipicoten harbour provides a port through which iron ore is currently shipped. Power in the area is supplied by the Great Lakes Power Company, with generating plants on Michipicoten river, on Montreal river, and on St. Mary's river at Sault Ste. Marie. A series of transmission lines cover the district and one of these is connected to the Josephine mine by a 3 ½-mile branch line. History The Josephine property was staked by Alois Goetz in 1899. Before the claims could be recorded, the township in which they are located was given to the Algoma Central & Hudson Bay railway as part of a land grant. As a result, the ownership remained in dispute until August 24th, 1906, when a settlement was arbitrated by the Honourable Frank Cochrane. His ruling is interesting and is quoted in part.

"Any study in the field of theoretical investment analysis, or practical project evaluation, must be based on the assumption of one of the commonly applied models of time and value representation, and the corresponding interest convention. The lack of clear assumptions in this regard may easily confuse both the author of the study and the reader, and sometimes even lead to inaccurate results.In the first part of this paper formal definitions of the continuous and discrete models of time and value representation are introduced; in the second part, the importance of transparent assumptions is shown using a concrete example of inflation calculation in project evaluation.IntroductionIn his recent paper, L.D. Smith(10) discusses an important aspect of mine investment analysis: inflation in project evaluation. His interesting presentation of current practices of handling inflation by Canadian and international mining companies in their feasibility studies ends, in the conclusions, with a call for clear assumptions made when evaluating mining projects.With this call, an important issue has been addressed. The lack of clearly stated assumptions, or their incompleteness, are relatively frequent with regard to the interest convention or the model of time and value representation assumed when evaluating mining projects. It is, for example, fairly common that the quantitative evaluation of a project is performed according to the discrete model of time and value representation and the discrete interest convention, and the graphical presentation, supporting this evaluation, reflects the continuous model.Sometimes such an ambivalency means nothing more than just a formal inconsistency; there are cases , however, that may well lead to a serious confusion and /or to inaccurate results . Before this can be demonstrated on a specific example, a concise description of the models of time and value representation used in the evaluation of industrial projects seems to be in order. Although these models (especially the discrete one) have been in common use in the research and practice of financial analysis for considerable period of time, they have been applied rather intuitively, and their forma] definitions are difficult to find even in the standard textbooks on Engineering Economy."

"A comparative study of sulphide textures has been carried out on samples from four Archean copper-zinc massive base metal sulphide deposits: Kidd Creek, Ontario; Lake Dufault -Norbec, Quebec; Hood River-41, N. W. T.; and Geco, Ontario. These deposits have undergone metamorphic recrystallization under a range of conditions, and results of this study indicate that certain sulphide textures may be used as qualitative indicators of metamorphic grade, whereas other cannot.The sulphide textures of most value in this regard are sulphide grain sizes, which increase with increasing metamorphic grade, and the presence or absence of sedimentary/diagenetic textures, which are destroyed at the lower amphibolite facies of metamorphism. Chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite intergrowths in sphalerite increase in size, in degree of coalescence and in the ratio of unmixed pyrrhotite to chalcopyrite inclusions with increasing metamorphic rank. With increased metamorphic grade, the pyrrhotite intergrowths change from rounded inclusions on grain boundaries to rod-like shapes along sphalerite twin planes. There is also a general increase in the relative proportion of pyrrhotite in the deposits. Textures that appear to have little value as indicators of metamorphic grade are sulphide deformation textures, and triple junction point angles and their standard deviations, which show little variation from the lower greenschist to the upper amphibolite facies of metamorphism. The presence or absence of myrmekite-like magnetite also has little value in determining the relative metamorphic history of these deposits, as it is a product of local contact metamorphism."

Introductory The following pages present the results of field investigations, laboratory and commercial tests, drilling, surveying, and preliminary development of the refractory clays which have been discovered recently in the township of Kipling, at the foot of Long rapids on the west side of the Mattagami river about 57 miles north of Kapuskasing and approximately 7 miles north of Smoky Falls, the terminus of the privately owned railway operated by the Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company, Kapuskasing (see Figure 1). Investigations on the clays of northern Ontario have been carried on over a period of seven years by officers of the Ontario Department of Mines, and I am indebted to the information published by that Department in reports by W. S. Dyer and A. R. Crozier, as well as?by Professor R. J. Montgomery, of the Ceramic Department, University of Toronto. It was, in large measure, the data given in the 37th, 38th, and 42nd Annual Reports of the Ontario Department of Mines that led me to make a personal investigation of the Mattagami River clays, with the result that we now have a commercial undertaking that will develop eventually into an industry of considerable importance in supplying the central manufacturing districts of Canada with refractories that heretofore have been largely imported from the United States. An extract from the 42nd Annual Report of the Department, Part III, 1933, page 75, reads as follows: "As for the refractory clay, the deposits are undoubtedly very large, but what is urgently needed is a deposit near the railway under sufficiently shallow overburden for recovery by stripping'. Having previously made an investigation of the clays adjacent to the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway, and these clays proving unsuitable, I turned my attention to the outcrops of refractory clays on the Mattagami river, first reported by Keele in 1919. This area offered possibilities within the economically permissible distance from rail transportation.

"AbstractThe results of research into the fatigue properties of SAE 1080 carbon steel and nickel-chromium-molylbdenum steel for mining drill rods are analysed and described in detail.The effect of water corrosion on the fatigue strength of drill rods of these two steels in the as-rolled condition has ,been investigated and the beneficial influence of shot-peening on their dry and water-corrosion fatigue strengths determined by employing the method developed previously (1).Eight S-N curves for as-rolled and shot-peened mining drill rods under both dry and water corrosion conditions have been derived and their shape and relative position are discussed. The main features relating to field performance of the drill rods are analysed.Purpose of Research and Outline of ProgrammeDRILLING holes in rock and ore by means of drill rods attached to a pneumatic drill is a basic procedure required in mining operations. Detonation of explosives placed in these holes is at present the only practical method of breaking down the rock and ore.A drilling rod is supported by its bit end in the drilled rock. Its shank end, fixed in the drilling machine, transmits impact energy to the cutting edges of the bit. On the field performance of the drill rod depend a number of basic mining operations such as sinking, drifting, and stoping. The drill rod is there-fore regarded as one of the most important tools used in the mining industry."

"A pressure oxidation plant to pretreat refractory sulphide ore at the Goldstrike plant in Nevada, was commissioned in early February 1990. The plant, with a nominal capacity of 1363 t/d, was commissioned over a one-week period and achieved design capacity and availability within ten weeks an unusually short period for a plant of this complexity.The pressure oxidation process is conducted under elevated temperature and pressure conditions, and in a corrosive environment. These conditions demand that the process and engineering design of the plant be carried out in a much more sophisticated and detailed manner than is normally required in a conventional gold plant.This paper provides an account of the process and engineering design of the Goldstrike pressure oxidation plant with special emphasis on the design of the vessels, slurry pumps, piping, valves, and control systems.BackgroundLocationThe Goldstrike property is located in Eureka County in northcentral Nevada on the Carlin geological trend. The mine is approximately 40 km northwest of the town of Carlin which is situated on Interstate Highway 80. The minesite is located 1700 m above sea level in the Tuscarora Mountains.Initial Goldstrike OperationsShallow, low-grade mineralization was discovered by diamond drilling in the Goldstrike area in the 1960s. A heap leach operation was established in the mid-I970s by the previous owners. The Post deposit was discovered in 1982. Gold production by mining and heap leaching reached I t/a (40 000 oz/a). American Barrick purchased the property in 1987 and started an aggressive program of deep drilling. This led to the discovery of the Betze and Deep Post deposits and established sufficient reserves to justify an initial 4100 t/d mill and a 5 500 000 t/a heap leach operation"

"In the 1950s, Canada produced more than ninety-five percent of the non-communist world's nickel and achieved dominance in terms of production, technology and pricing policies.Over the past thirty years there have been dramatic changes in the nickel industry to the extent that Canadian production is now less than thirty per cent of the total.In this document we have presented statistics relevant to this transformation and reviewed the technology, particularly with regards to energy and environmental considerations.Under the new market conditions nickel producers are likely to face more difficult competition than they have encountered in the past.The economic scene and measured nickel reserves dictate that for the purpose of increasing production, new nickel smelters will not be built in Canada in the foreseeable future. However, in order to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions, Canadian nickel smelters will possibly go through some modifications or rebuilding.IntroductionThis paper presents a review of the Canadian nickel industry in relation to the world nickel industry. Major changes are described which have occurred in the characteristics of the nickel market over the last thirty years. The pre sent status of the nickel market with respect to Forecasting future trends is reviewed and attempts are made to predict what further changes will take place in the next two decades. Comparisons are made of the economics of producing nickel from sulphide ores and oxide ores and the advantages and disadvantages the Canadian nickel producers face.A brief critique of the existing and emerging nickel production technologies in Canada and the world is carried out and attempts are mad e to predict the changes which may take place in the foreseeable future."

"One of the most significant developments in environmental law has been the development of mandatory project review processes, at both the federal and provincial levels.FederalWhile, in the past, project review processes have, f or the most part, been spelled out in guidelines, the guidelines have not had the force of law. All that has changed, particularly at the federal level, with the Federal Court decisions commonly referred to as the Old Man River and Alameda and Rafferty Dam cases. These decisions, taken as a whole, are authority for the proposition that the Environmental Assessment and Review Process Guidelines Order, SOR 82-487 is a law of general application, not a mere guideline which may or may not be applied. This federal environmental assessment process first provides for a screening, and, depending upon the results of the screening process, the possibility of a public review. This federal process only applies, however, when the proposal is being undertaken by a federal department, or where the Government of Canada makes a financial contribution, or where federal lands are involved, or where a federal licence or permit is required.Bill C-78, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, will replace the Federal Environmental Assessment and Review Process Guidelines Order once it has been passed by Parliament. Currently the bill is being widely discussed, both between governments as well as public interest groups.ProvincialOn the provincial scene, there are three project review processes, one concerned with new mines, the second with energy projects and the third with all other major projects. The most recent initiatives taken by British Columbia are twofold. First, the Mine Development Review Process which was in the form of a guideline, has been replaced by the Mine Development Assessment Act. "The ultimate aim of the Law of the Sea Conference, held under the auspices of the United Nations, is to ensure that all aspects of the use of the sea are covered by international law. The question facing the nations of the world can be stated as: "" Who will control and benefit from the use and the wealth of the sea?""The United Nations Conference on Law of the Sea - known as UNCLOS - which reconvened in New York during the latter part of August 1978 was the third such Conference in the UN's history. The concepts of sovereignty over the territorial sea and freedom on the high seas have remained fundamental to the international law o f the sea until our time. The legal regime based on these two concepts developed initially from state practice meant that the unilateral actions taken by one or more countries were eventually accepted and followed by others.It was not until 1958, during the first Geneva Conference on the Law of the Sea (pursued in a second Conference in 1960) that the Law of the Sea was codified and modified to a certain extent by the then independent nations of the world in the four multilateral conventions on territorial sea and contiguous zone, continental shelf, high seas, and fishing and conservation of living resources.A third Conference got under way many years later when the members of the UN met in New York at the end of 1973 for preliminary discussions . This meeting stemmed largely from the need to fill gaps in existing international legislation which did not cover the new uses of the sea. The Conference was subsequently reconvened a number of times - in Caracas (1974), in Geneva (1975) and twice in New York (1976) for what was called "" substantive negotiating sessions."" A sixth session was held in New York in 1977; a seventh, held in Geneva at the beginning of 1978, recessed and reconvened in New York at the end of August 1978. This is what is referred to, in international jargon, as the seventh session of the Third United Nations Conference on the Law o f the Sea. The following dates are the principal markers of a saga which began some twenty years ago with the purpose of regulating the use of the oceans."

"Unique production and environmental problems are associated with multiple seam mining where dragfines are used for overburden and interburden removal. On the production side, the problems are decreased dragfine efficiency in chopdown operations, the general need for spoil rehandle, complications in sequencing stripping and coal handling operations, and potential stability problems in highly stacked spoil. Many variations of dragline methods have been reported in the literature to encounter these problems. Because of the physical properties and peculiar hydrology of sub-arctic region mining of multiple seams in such areas probably could not be done with the methods used in temperate regions.The properties of thawed material would make spoil hard to place in a stable manner and thus would influence the mini sequence. For instance, multiple seam mining which requires some rehandling of spoil and prolonged exposure of overburden and interburden material might be precluded by the instability of thawed spoil and therefore mining techniques have to be modified. Since the deployment and operation of a dragline in modes different from conventional schemes will affect productivity, it will be necessary to study the effects on production of changing the dragfine operational schemes. This paper presents a heuristic simulation model of multi-seam dragline operation of a sub-arctic mine that can be used to analyze the handling of overburden and detailed study of the dragfine performance."
