Mine water from base metal mines is generally characterized as having high concentrations of heavy metals and low pH, resulting in the need for treatment prior to discharge to receiving waters. In this study, two high-rate clarification processes were evaluated at bench-scale: the high density sludge (HDS) process and sand-ballasted flocculation. High-rate clarification processes generate larger, denser flocs which settle more quickly than those formed in conventional flocculation processes. The HDS process uses recirculated sludge in order to seed floc formation, whereas ballasted flocculation uses microsand. Both of these high-rate processes require the addition of quicklime or hydrated lime to increase pH and allow for the formation of insoluble metal hydroxides, which can then be removed in the clarification stage. Previous research has shown that cement kiln dust (CKD) can effectively replace quicklime in conventional sedimentation processes for metals and acidity reduction to meet discharge guidelines (Mackie & Walsh 2012). CKD is an alkaline by-product of cement manufacture that has fine particle sizes and varying free lime concentrations depending on the manufacturing process. The lower solubility (i.e., free lime content) of CKD requires larger doses of material to be added to reach treatment pH targets for metals precipitation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the treatment efficacy of high-rate clarification processes for mine water treatment, compared with conventional sedimentation, at bench-scale with conventional (i.e., lime) and novel (i.e., CKD) pH adjustment additives. Results of the study showed that all treatment processes (i.e., HDS, ballasted flocculation, and conventional sedimentation) were able to reduce target metal concentrations to well below Canadian guidelines (i.e., total zinc and total nickel < 0.5 mg/L, total copper < 0.3 mg/L) using either CKD or lime. Additionally, mine water samples treated with CKD generated lower sludge volumes than those treated with lime (i.e., 50 versus 100 mL for conventional sedimentation and 100 versus 200 mL for HDS) even with increased concentrations of solids introduced during treatment. This is most likely due to slower neutralization rates when using CKD, due to its lower solubility, as well as finer particle size. The sand-ballasted flocculation process was able to reduce final turbidity in CKD-treated samples while the HDS process did not when compared to conventional sedimentation, making the ballasted flocculation process preferable for reducing final solids concentrations in CKD-treated mine water.

"Abstract - Biotite from aplite that appears to have crystallized simultaneously with disseminated Cu-Mo mineralization at MacLeod Lake in northern Quebec yields K-Ar dates in the range 2032 ± 44 Ma to 2097 ± 47 Ma. The mean value, 2065 Ma, is some 400 Ma younger than the 2485 ± 64 Ma date obtained from a hornblende concentrate separated from a granodiorite sill that is spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with the disseminated Cu-Mo deposit. The mean biotite date of 2065 Ma at MacLeod Lake, a K-Ar date of 2055 Ma reported from an area 50 km east of MacLeod Lake and published dates of about 2000 Ma for galenas from the Chibougamau Cu-Au ores, suggest a widespread thermal and mineralization event, in that part of the Superior Province east of James Bay, that differs from the common late Archean mineralization that is related to volcanism and metamorphic-intrusive activity.Sommaire - Les datations au K-Ar sur des biotites qui auraient cristallise en même temps que la minéralisation disséminée en Cu et Mo dans une aplite mise en place au Lac MacLeod, au nord du Québec, s&apos;échelonnent entre 2032 ± 44 Ma et 2097 ± 47 Ma. The effect of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), as a preceding stage to a conventional ball mill circuit at PT Freeport Indonesia?s C1/C2 concentrators, has been studied in terms of downstream grinding efficiency and circuit performance. When milling the product from the HPGR, mill capacity increased by 21% for the same product grind size, when compared to processing similar ore from a conventional crushing circuit. This achievement is a result of several reasons, among them: reduction in feed size (F80), fines generation beyond the proportional reduction in F80, reduction in ore hardness induced by HPGR comminution mechanism, optimization of the recycle system of the HPGR and ball string optimization in the ball mill circuit given the new feed to the mill.

"This paper describes the general layout of the environmental monitoring scheme at Devco &apos;s No. 26 Colliery, including wall face ventilation, fan performance and methane drainage, and then goes on to discuss the sensors, the outstation layout, the surf ace control room and the protection of the system.IntroductionCape Breton coal mines have been pioneers in the use of the latest technology in mining coal on this continent. To mention just one example, continuous methane monitoring at the coal face was started in 1976 and the idea of automatically stopping the face conveyor during high gas levels using the face signalling system was conceived and developed by CBDC engineers.With the introduction of remote environmental monitoring, No. 26 Colliery will be the first underground coal mine in Canada and possibly in North America to have computer-based comprehensive environmental monitoring.Traditionally, surveillance of the mine environment has been based mainly on periodic checks by portable or hand-held monitors. Although this method proved adequate, it has some limitations, namely:1) restricted &apos;number of observations and samples;2) relatively long time between taking measurements and availability of results for assessment.With remote monitoring, the above limitations are overcome because (a) monitoring is continuous and (b) monitored data are updated quickly (typically 5-7 sec.). Remote monitoring also provides a centralized &apos;information center&apos; at the surface from where the entire mine environment can be monitored. Details of modes in which data can be displayed and features available at the location will be discussed later in the paper."

"A low-grade concentrate from the Crevier Township, Quebec, containing 1.8% Ta205 and 13.7% Nb205 was reduced with carbon at 1600°C, and niobium and tantalum were selectively absorbed in liquid iron. To slag off the zirconia-rich gangue, some silica and lime were added as flux. Metallic iron was added in such a way that the combined contents of TaC and NbC did not exceed 20% in the ferroalloy . Up to 95% of the niobium, and up to 80% of the tantalum contained in the concentrate were recovered in the metal. The ferroalloy was ground finely and dissolved in 2 wt % sulphuric acid to leach out iron and silicon preferentially. The insoluble residue consisted principally of NbC and TaC, the calcination of which yielded an enriched concentrate comprising 80% Nb2O5 and 8% Ta2O5. The insoluble residue could also be chlorinated to obtain an impure liquid of Nb2Cl5 and TaCl5. Process variables and their effects are discussed in terms of higher metal recoveries in the smelting.IntroductionPresently, about one-third of the world production of tantalum comes from the pyrometallurgical reprocessing of tin slag, a by-product of tin smelting, containing sometimes 2 to 10% Ta205 and about the same amount of Nb205. Upon heating tin slags with carbon at about 1600°C in an electric furnace, tantalum and niobium oxides are converted to TaC and NbC, which are absorbed by the coexisting phase of molten metallic iron(1,2). The Fe-Nb-Ta-C melts cannot be decarburized by oxidation because of the preferential formation of Nb and Ta oxides over CO gas(3). So, the ferroalloys containing tantalum and niobium carbides are commercially treated by acid-leaching and I or chlorination to eliminate iron and thus permitting the eventual recovery of purified tantalum and niobium oxides(2).Absorbing Ta and Nb carbides in molten iron was first proposed and demonstrated by Zimmerley and Back(4) in 1957 in order to recover selectively tantalum and niobium from lowgrade concentrates. The process was successfully applied to the electric furnace smelting of tin slags by Hunter and Fursmant(5) over a period preceding 1965."

"This paper traces the introduction and use of fire-resistant (FR) fluids in hydraulic systems at underground mines in British Columbia. Reasons are given for the decision to make compulsory the use of such fluids in underground mines after January 1, 1975 by provincial government legislation. Examples are quoted of fires caused, or supported by, mineral oils which have resulted in loss of life and property.The basic principles of hydraulic systems are reviewed in order to present the effects of changing a system operating on mineral oils to one which must operate on FR fluids. Approximations of the cost of system conversions are given for certain machines and a brief survey is made of the various pieces of underground equipment which contain hydraulic systems operating on FR fluids.IntroductionIn 1948, Admiral Ben Moreel , who was then president of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation in the United States , wrote:""Although safe and healthful working conditions can be justified on a cold dollars-and- cents basis, I prefer to justify them on the basic principle that it is the right thing to do. ""(1)This paper will outline the introduction and use of fire resistant fluids at mine operations in the Province of British Columbia. That it was the right thing to do in enhancing the safety and well-being of every person employed at the mines was the prime consideration. That it may be justified on a cold dollars-and-cents basis is left for the reader to judge. The prime purpose of this paper is not so much to trace the efforts made by the individual mines to successfully introduce and use fire-resistant (FR) fluids in hydraulic systems, but to present an over-all picture of what occurred, in a collective sense, at the majority of mines which have ended up with a working FR fluid system. The problems attendant to the introduction of an FR fluid will be recounted in a manner which, it is hoped, will prove useful to those contemplating system conversions. Because the predominant fluid now in use is an invert, or water-in-oil. emulsion, this will be the FR fluid considered.Fluid Loss from SystemsThe quantities of various fluids required for use in hydraulic systems are extremely high. This statement in itself may appear to be redundant in that the capacities of the various systems should demand that a fixed amount of fluid is required for the initial filling of a system, with a further amount of fluid scheduled for use during subsequent fluid changes, i.e. at the recommended change intervals . "In May 1936, Pamour started producing gold by cyanidation of flotation concentrates, and in 1939 was milling about 1, 600 tons per day.Refining records dating from 1939 show two oil-fired furnaces in use, (Rockwell type 46 11 x 29 11 inside oval shell).Refining time averaged 7. 83 hours during the year 1939, indicating a complete refining shift of about 9. 33 hours. That year appears to be characteristic of the period with regard to time required and results obtained.For that year total fineness (gold + silver) of the bars averaged 940 (approx.), but it frequently dropped below this figure, sometimes far below.Furnace lining life varied widely from three to seven or more months. Sillimanite was the standard lining but Mullfrax 41 was frequently used.For many years refining practice remained practically unchanged, and in 1960 procedure still consisted essentially of mixing a flux(% Composition Borax 41, Silica 11, Soda-Ash 11, Nitre 15, Mn02 22) with cyanidation precipitate in the ratio of l. 2 to l and heating to a medium heat (yellowishred, 2000° F) with a low flame for a long time. Time required was about 10. 5 hours per refining. Results were still much as detailed above.At this time it was decided to revise refining procedure, in an effort to shorten refining time and obtain consistently good bullion fineness."

The northern part of the P. G. E. railway traverses and opens up that part of the province known as the Cariboo district, comprising the Cariboo and Quesnel Mining Divisions, which are a part of the Northeastern Mineral Survey District. Williams lake, a divisional point on the P. G. E. is near the southern boundary of the Quesnel Division and from this point the railway runs northerly to Quesnel, its present terminus. From Quesnel the railway is projected and partially constructed to Prince George on the Canadian National railway; therefore its general trend is northerly through the heart of the Cariboo district. Early History There is no need to outline at any length the early history of mining in the Cariboo. It is sufficient to say that the great gold rush to the Cariboo, in the early sixties, was practically the commencement of mining in British Columbia. These early placer mining operations centred around the old towns of Quesnel Forks, Keithley Creek, Barkerville and Van Winkle, the latter now called Stanley. Many millions of dollars of placer gold have been taken out and the end of production is not in sight yet. The maximum yearly production was reached about 1863, after which there was a gradual decline in output. During the war years production was at a very low figure but a steady, even if small, increase has occurred in the last three years and prospects are encouraging for a much greater output.

Copper electrowinning at Duisburger Kupferhuette was introduced in March 1975. The electrowinning plant has a capacity of 10,000 mT of copper cathodes a year. The cuprous oxide feed material is an intermediate product of the treatment of the leach solutions, originating from chloridizing roasting of pyrite cinders. This material is characterized not only by a wide spectrum of accompanying impurities, but also by an unusually high level of precious metals. As the priority set was the production of high-purity cathodes. there was a need for developing a process which would be suited to treat complex leach liquors . The process adopted consist s of an oxidizing leach in spent electrolyte, followed by two- stage purification, By this means. a low- acid pregnant copper electrolyte is obtained free of elements detrimental to copper quality. Electrowinning is carried out at a current density of 200 A / m2 in the presence of 10 g/l zinc. The electrowon copper has a conductivity of at least 101.4% lACS and a softening temperature not exceeding 200°C, which makes it a suitable product for continuous casting and dip ?forming.

Over the past twenty years, steelmakers have introduced improved practices for reducing the inclusion content of steels. The success of these practice changes can be monitored in a variety of ways. Chemical analysis of the bulk sulphur and oxygen contents provides a relatively simple means to assess the impact of these changes. However, microscopical test methods are still needed to assess the nature of the inclusions present. Traditional chartbased measurement methods have wide acceptability, and their data are well understood by both purchaser and producer for heat acceptance purposes. However, these methods do have inherent weaknesses which limit their usefulness for quality control, SPC, and database applications. Image analysis-based chart measurements are an improvement over manually generated chart ratings, but the data still do not lend themselves to databases and statistical comparisons. ASTM Committee E-4 on Metallography has developed a stereologicallybased image analysis standard test method, E 1245, which provides the necessary data in a form which is easily databased and analyzed statistically. This paper describes E 1245 and shows how data from different heats and melting practices can be compared statistically to ascertain valid test differences.

"Most FeNi furnaces used to rely on post-combustion and off-gas cooling inside the furnace to eliminate the produced CO gas, and control the off gas temperature. As furnace load, capacity, and thus gas volumes increased over the years, this led to increased instabilities that can cause problems in controlling the operation. Some of the large capacity furnaces nowadays work with partial or full combustion outside the furnace, more similar to the steel industry. Forced combustion with or without enriched air and other additions can support in controlling post-combustion, stabilizing and even reducing off gas amounts, and affecting composition. This paper presents some of the possibilities and advantages of having a specially designed post-combustion system for the FeNi laterite industry, but that could also be applied to other processes as well.Large Scale Furnaces In the FeNi industry, the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) process is still going strong in spite of continuous hope that hydrometallurgical processes will one day make the RKEF plant obsolete. Within the pyrometallurgical plants there is a continuous trend for larger scale furnaces. The development for a number of furnaces that were started before 1985 and increased capacity by “natural growth” is given in Figure 1. Natural growth refers to the development of the plants that after having mastered a certain level of operation, were ready for a higher load that could be installed either with a new furnace on the same site, or during a revamp. The advantages of natural growth are numerous, for example: •,Deep knowledge of the ore and its’ behavior, no need for testing, and little risk of surprises. •,Mining, laboratory, equipment, etc. is all proven technology for the conditions on site. •,Starting a furnace with increased capacity is a re-start, not a green-field commissioning. •,Typically, when increasing the production capacity of an existing plant, not the entire plant is commissioned for the first time, but only a part. In the FeNi laterite industry for example, the kilns may already have had the capacity to provide enough material."

"This paper describes the development of a milling circuit for the complex Midwest orebody, containing a high-arsenic uranium ore typical of that found in northern Saskatchewan. The results of preliminary bench-scale test work are summarized. Data from a pilot-plant program carried out at the Ontario Research Foundation are provided for the selected mill flowsheet. Also described are waste circuits which have been established to produce effluents of acceptable quality. Pilot-plant testing of sub-aerial tailings deposition is also described. The applicability of manufacturers&apos; equipment for the various circuits in the flowsheet is discussed.IntroductionThe Midwest uranium deposit is in northern Saskatchewan, 700 km north of Saskatoon, near the eastern edge of the Athabasca BasinDevelopment work on the project is directed by Canada Wide Mines Ltd., a subsidiary of Esso Resources Canada Limited. Participants in the project are Esso Resources Canada Limited, Numac Oil and Gas Ltd., Bow Valley Industries Ltd ., Mink Mining Corporation and Midwest Mining Corporation.The deposit consists of a series of flat lenses of massive ore overlain by a halo of lower-grade sandstone ore. The massive ore is formed of pitchblende and nickel arsenides, along with clay, and averages about 10% U and 9% Ni, The principal minerals are pitchblende (UO2-UO3), coffinite (U(SiO4)1-x(OH)4x), gersdorffite (NiAsS), niccolite (NiAs) and rammelsbergite (NiAs2). The sandstone ore, a friable clay-rich sandstone with sooty pitchblende, averages about 0.4% U and 0.6% Ni. Typical expected mill feed analyses are given in Table I.A bench-scale development program ore was carried out during the period from August 1978 to May 1981 in the laboratories of Lakefield Research of Canada Ltd. (Lakefield), (Lakefield, Ontario), the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute (CSMRI), (Golden, Colorado) and, to a lesser extent, the Ontario Research Foundation (ORF), (Mississauga, Ontario) and the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC), (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). Direction of the development studies was shared by Canada Wide Mines Ltd. and its metallurgical consultants, A.H. Ross and Associates. Input was received from Envirotech, Enviroclear, Interox America, and Knight and Piesold Ltd."

In the Polish coal mining industry, the use of mine waste in underground backfill has been the most common means of providing ground support to minimize surface subsidence, increasing extraction ratios, and reducing the quantity of waste for surface disposal. Over the last decade attention has been focused on the use of different waste as filling material of underground workings and grouting of roof fall rocks in caving area. In the paper, a brief history of the development of fill technology in Polish coal mining industry is presented. Next, the paper discusses various criteria that should be taken under consideration in the preparation process of a fill slurry and grout, fill distribution systems, mining geometry and placement methods. Moreover, in the paper evaluation of the potential of utilizing coarse and fine waste as a resource material in the production of a backfill slurry and grout for filling and injection in abandoned mines is presented.

Tantalum is an important minor metal for the production of high performance capacitors. Approximately 60% of the annual tantalum production is used in this application. Despite its high price of 298 US$/kg (average price 2010–2014), at the moment, no recycling from end-of-life products takes place. In the established recycling processes of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), tantalum is lost in the slags of copper smelting, where it is highly diluted. An economic recovery is not possible at that point. Although tantalum must therefore be extracted from the WEEE stream before it enters smelting, no industrial recycling processes exist. The main reasons are its low concentration in the WEEE stream, lack of information about tantalum bearing devices, technical difficulties of extraction, and conflicts of interests regarding the recycling of other valuable metals in WEEE. In this paper, the results of a cooperation research project are presented. The aforementioned challenges are addressed and a novel tantalum recycling process is developed. Small pilot scale experiments show that a mechanical processing route can produce marketable tantalum-concentrates of 30% tantalum with yields between 60 and 70%. This is reached through a manual pre-sorting of potentially tantalum bearing products followed by a combination of an optimized comminution, sieving, air classifying, eddy-current (EC), and two stage magnetic separation. Key to the implementation of this process was a detailed survey of the tantalum concentrations in different products carried out by the industrial partner.

"A dedicated iron removal stage was installed at Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg Base Metals Refiners (RBMR) during an expansion project which began execution in 2010. The Pressure Iron Removal (PIR) process aims to precipitate iron from a nickel leach solution under medium temperature (145 °C) oxidative conditions using caustic for neutralisation. Since commissioning, the process has been robust in removing iron from the refinery but has shown significant variability in the residues produced. These residues, which are typically comprised of ferrihydrite, hematite or natrojarosite, have varying iron contents and different physical properties which have implications for their filtration and ultimate removal from the refinery. Since over 95% of nickel plated at RBMR passes through the PIR section, volumetric constraints caused by poor filtration performance directly influence nickel production and stabilisation of this process remains central to the continued ramp-up of the refinery to full nameplate capacity. This paper details the development of the PIR process and the journey from concept to implementation. Recent laboratory and plant scale tests have highlighted the importance of the initial phase formed in the autoclave for the ultimate residue requiring filtration and how the feed acid concentration is a critical control parameter. On this basis, a new caustic dosing philosophy was implemented which improved pH control in the autoclave. Further optimisation of the PIR process is on-going.INTRODUCTIONIn 2010, an expansion of Rustenburg Base Metal Refiners (RBMR) to increase nickel production from 21 to 33 ktpa began execution. The management of iron was pivotal in the ultimate configuration in the new circuit and one of the primary differences from the original circuit was the addition of a dedicated iron removal stage: Pressure Iron Removal (PIR). A significant drive for this new unit operation was to facilitate the separation of iron from other leach residues. Not only did this result in a significant decrease in the amount of leach residue but, without the constraints associated with iron precipitation during leaching, has permitted more aggressive leaching conditions and, correspondingly, greater throughput and efficiencies.However, as with many commercial implementations of even mature technologies, the journey from development to implementation has presented challenges for the continued ramp-up of the refinery to full nameplate capacity. Specifically, since all nickel bearing leach solution must pass through the PIR section prior to the nickel purification and recovery circuit, throughput difficulties in the PIR section can directly impact supply of feed to the nickel tank house. Since commissioning, the PIR autoclave has effectively removed iron from the refinery, but has shown significant variation in the solids phases produced in the autoclave. This variation presents difficulties for the filtration of the discharge slurry and represents a key throughput limitation which periodically impacts production. Additionally, the increasing production rates associated with the ramp-up of the refinery have resulted in a significant increase in the required volumetric throughput through the PIR process. This has placed even greater emphasis on improving the stability of the solid phase produced in the autoclave, ultimately targeting an easily filterable residue with high iron content."

La datation moyenne de la minéralisation au Lac MacLeod, soit 2065 Ma, la dataion au K-Ar à 2055 Ma citée pour une région à 50 km à l&apos;est du Lac MacLeod, de même que les datations d&apos;environ 2000 Ma établies pour des galènes qui se trouvent dans le minerai aurifère et cuprifère à Chibougamau, suggèrent un phénomène thermique répandu qui aurait produit la minéralisation dans cette région à l&apos;est de la Baie James, dans la province du lac Supérieur. Ce phénomene serait différent de celui qui aurait produit la minéralisation répan­ due d&apos;âge archéen tardif qui elle serait associée à l&apos;activité volcanique et à l&apos;activité intrusive accompagnée de métamorphisme."

"Accident prevention has been an on-going priorty for five years. In 1987, adherence to the ILCI five-star rating loss control program was started, and a first star was awarded. Extensive training programs have been undertaken to establish standard procedures and upgrade employee skills. Due to its location, Selbaie owns and rents housing in the town of Joutel and contracts a busing service to and from the mine. Employees from other areas are lodged in dormitories and fed in the site dining room. Accounting and warehousing services are carried out in efficient fashion. Employee relations are structured to provide prompt resolution of complaints and differences. No lost time due to industrial relations differences has been encountered during the history of the mine.Safety and Loss ControlAll mines are concerned and occupied with a wide range of activities to ensure the safety of its employees. Selbaie is no exception. Programs to achieve success in safety and loss control have been implanted since the start of construction and development at Selbaie and have followed three interesting stages of evolution."
