In a field test at Mount Isa Mines Ltd., a system developed by ICI Australia Ltd. for bulk loading "MOLANITE", an ammonium nitrate slurry blasting agent into ring drilled holes of wblcvel open stopes, was shown to be satisfactory. The fragmentation produced by the slurry was a significant improvement over ANFO and the stope production rate was increased by approximately 50%. Indications are that the charging rate and labour costs will not be greatly changed if a slurry system is used.

The paper discusses assay methods generally used when prospecting for gold, and also the applicability of various chemical methods, it describes a new paper chromatographic technique.for making fairly rapid semi-quantitative assays for very fine gold. Testing of the method in field work shows that this simple method could have applications in geologic work, in prospecting and in certain routine mine sampling work. It is not yet a method that can be used to detect anomalies in traces of gold dispersed around an orebody, as is general practice in geochemical prospecting.INTRODUCTIONAccording to the English economist Harrod (1958), "the acute shortage of gold in the world-because currency value has not been adjusted in line with the fall in the goods value of the various currencies-has been a familiar fact for some time now". Harrod calculates that a rise in the price of gold to double its present value is necessary to rectify this condition, and that, if this rise were to take place, increase in production and reduction in private hoarding might well bring annual accretion to world stocks from the presentaverage of about $464 million to a figure close to the $2,000 million that would probably eiiminate these shortages.Any increase in the price of gold is bound to lead to a great increase in prospecting at working mines, in abandoned areas and possibly in untouched country. Prospecting, techniques for base metal orebodies have improved greatly in the last thirty years; but methods available to detect gold occurring without accessory metals have not received the same attention. On the Hauraki goldfields, within the limits of Cape Colville Peninsula, the Paheozoic rocks are confined to the district north of a line drawn from Mercury Bay on the east coast to Rocky Point on the shore of the Frith of Thames. South of Kennedy's Bay they are developed on the east coast only at Kuaotunu, at which place gold mining is carried on in sandstones and slates of this age. Between Tapu Creek and Coromandel there is, along and adjacent to the shore of the gulf, a very considerable development of PaJreozoic and in part of Trias rocks, and between the Tiki Stream and the northern end of Tokatea Hill, along the western slope of the main range, lies the special area of the Palreozoic or carboniferous rocks that have more particularly to be dealt with in this paper. The same formation has a large devolpment between Cabbage Bay and the northern slopes of Moehau, and appears to the water marge on both sides of this part of the peninsula.In this part they are of special interest as having, on the west spur of Moehau, a considerable variety of dyke rocks intruded into the sedimentaries, the interest in which is increased by the fact that these dykes theIllselves are of Palreozoic age and correspond to the dykes that are so' abundant in the Tokatea-Tiki area. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.South-East Asia represents the world’s most productive tin province, mainly from placers. Kalimantan has been a major diamond producer, while in the 1980s a placer gold rush occurred in Indonesia and Malaysia. Reviewing extensive geological and mining data highlights phenomenal palaeo-environmental changes in the Sundaland region, interpreted to be responsible for generating ‘giant’ placers. Correlation of the Late Cainozoic stratigraphy has been facilitated from mine exposures and drill holes distributed throughout Peninsular Malaysia, the Indonesian Tin islands and Kalimantan, including contiguous marine areas with extensive shallow seismic profiling data. Knowing the association of rich placers with palaeo-environmental episodes and stratigraphical units has been helpful to facilitate their discovery. All three placer commodities responded similarly to region-wide landscape evolution following Mio-Pliocene high sea levels. Commencing with major regression, important stages comprised: a long period of landscape stability with deep weathering during the maximum Sundaland extent gradually rising sea levels/precipitation initiated slumping of mineralised regolith to form fans, later reworked by braided streams with aggradation (Old Alluvium); during episodic pluvial periods downcutting upgraded placers significant change occurred around Middle Pleistocene time with peneplanation and pedogenesis from Late Pleistocene time ‘modern’ fluviatile deposition (Young Alluvium) filled incised V-shaped valleys.Placer seams show systematic variation in stratigraphic position, in particular cassiterite especially occurs in the Old Alluvium (equivalent Upper Dahor Formation in Kalimantan). Gold is commonly richer in gravelly younger deposits, partly because of secondary precipitation within permeable alluvium. Maori economic development still remains an enigma to many people some 157 years after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. It has only been in the last decade as a result of increasing pressures from Maori to recognize and settle grievances arising from the Treaty and the resulting compensation issues that "mainstream" has begun to sit up and take notice. While Treaty settlements such as the Tainui, Ngai Tahu and Fisheries settlements have gained prominence as a source of economic potential for Maori, there are significant existing assets owned by Maori worth an estimated $4.6 billion that add an exciting new dimension to Maori contribution to New Zealand's enterprise economy.   Despite the fact that many claims have yet to be resolved, Maori are clearly shifting from grievance to development mode as evidenced by their focus on capacity building through education, strategic alliances nationally and internationally and the significant growth of nett asset worth of Maori interests in a number of industry sectors.   In essence, Maori provide a large un-tapped economic potential in New Zealand. The years of relative economic obscurity appear to have wetted their appetite for positive growth and economic independence. Given current trends, it would not be unrealistic to expect the asset base of Maori to double in value over the next decade and to see the emergence of Maori owned Corporates not only within the New Zealand economy but also trading actively in the global market place.

Copper waste dump leaching is growing in importance because of the.large tonnages (up to 250,000 ton/day) of low grade waste rock available from open cut mining of copper deposits and proof that controlled leaching of copper from such dumps can be profitable.Overburden or waste rock, ranging in size from large boulders to fines, is dumped as cheaply as possible on sloping sites. Copper is leached from the dumps by applying up to 12,000 gal/min of leach solution (a combination of spent solution from cementation and make-up water) to the top of the dumps by various techniques.Efliuent from the dumps is sent to a cementation plant for copper recovery.Factors which may be controlled, either directly or indirectly, to give a controlled copper content in the dump efliuent (usually 1-2 g/l.) are the cycle of operations (i.e. the alternate wetting and drying periods), thevolume of solution applied to the dump, pH, Fe2+ and Fe3+ content or redox potential, oxygen content, bacteria and their necessary nutrients, and temperature.Dissolution of oxide copper minerals appears to be mainly a function of acid concentration. Copper sulphide minerals need oxidation for dissolution to occur and this is accomplished by a combination of oxygen,ferric ion, and bacteria. Oxidation of pyrite, oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3 +, and hydrolysis of Fe3+ are of some importance in leaching practice. The presence of gangue carbonate minerals is detrimental.Physical factors connected with penetration of solution into large rocks are important and the treatment of an individual dump usually extends over a period of many years. Recovery of copper from solution is usually achieved by cementation with iron (usually in the form of crumpled cans) but the use of sponge iron is becoming more important. Iron consumption varies from 1 to 4 lbiron per pound of copper. The estimation of process plant head grade is not trivial and is a source of constant dispute within the mining industry. Grade estimates informed by the short term mine planning are frequently not reproduced by sampling the continuous flow of ore at the plant. Head grades are normally obtained by periodically sampling the continuous flow during a day or shift, and taking the average of the multiple increments collected. The standard error of this mean grade depends on the ore variability and the frequency (number) of aliquots extracted. The more increments are taken the higher is the precision on the calculated mean. Variographic experiments are normally used to map grade variability along a certain period of time and the extension variance is derived from this variogram. This experiment is time consuming, expensive and cumbersome. Mining industry personnel rarely apply this approach. Additionally, a temporal variogram can vary from day to day as different ores are mined along the life of the mine. This paper investigates a novel approach based on simulating the grades feeding the processing plant. In situ 3D grade models are built using geostatistical simulations. Grade spatial continuity and variability are reproduced in models that mimic the real deposit. These models are used in mine planning and scheduling transforming a 3D block model into an one dimensional string of values feeding the plant (one dimension flow). These grades have the statistical characteristics of the unknown real grades and can be sampled to emulate a variographic experiment. The results showed consistency and adequacy to estimate the sampling error (Gy, 1998 p 31) for various sampling intervals using the simulated grades. Also the results show a variographic experiment can change significantly from time to time, as ore changes and a selected sampling protocol can become obsolete if not adjusted for ore variability.CITATION:Costa, J F C L and Marques, D M, 2012. The evaluation of historical goldfields has been common over the past 15 years, reflecting changing economic conditions, improvements in knowledge and technology and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins, which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold, have variable geometry and architecture and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation, since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. Mine records include documents such as plans, sections, reports, news cuttings, production tabulations, etc. A major advantage for the modern explorer is the capability of computer modelling to display this data in 3D. Historical records can give the explorer substantial information on various deposit characteristics, not least grade and geological continuity, geometry and architecture, mineralogy, metallurgical properties, bulk density and ground conditions. From an evaluation perspective, historical records can be used to support a Mineral Resource estimate, though its application will depend upon the quality and quantity of the data and judgement of the Competent Person. Effectively used, historical records can reduce geological uncertainty and focus evaluation efforts û thus reducing project risk.

The richer, shallower sapphire deposits of the New England region of New South Wales which have been traditionally mined by the small miner are almost worked out. Larger mining and exploration companies are replacing the small miner and exploring for the primary source of sapphire or lower grade alluvial deposits.   Although in recent years considerable exploration effort has been directed at locating the primary source, commercial exploitation of sapphire is still restricted to the working of alluvial deposits.   If the Australian industry is to compete against Asian and African producers it must use cost effective exploration, mining) processing and marketing methods.

The removal of a horizontal piIlar between Nos. 9 and 11 levels (1,116 feet from the collar of main shaft) was successfully carried out by blast hole drilling, and, to the best of the authors' knowledge, this mass blast of 40,000 tons of ore (requiring the use of 7,150 Ibs. of explosive and 5,385 feet of primacord) was the first occasion on which a task of this magnitude has been carried out underground in an Australian mine.Blast hole drilling was introduced by this company approximately fifteen months ago at New Cobar Mine in sub-level stoping.This experimental drilling and blasting gave very valuable information as to the correct technique to be adopted when the final plans were being prepared for the removal of the horizontal pillar at New Occidental Mine.The dimensions of this pillar were approximately 15 feet long, and from 40 to 60 feet wide, and 65 feet in depth.The block of ore extended to 35 feet above the level and 30 feet below, the upper section being partially excavated to form the bell-hole floor and grizzly chambers used for drawing off the broken ore in the shrink stope above the No. 10 level.Description of Ore-bodyThe main ore-body is situated almost vertically in a well-defined shear zone at the junction of sandstone and slate, the sandstone forming the eastern and the slate the western wall.The ore-body consists of highly silicified slate (chert) sparsely impregnated with sulphides, containing a small percentage of copper and bismuth.The total length of the ore-body is approximately 450 feet, with a maximum width of 60 feet in the main section, which is about 200 feet long.This is the section shown in longitudinal and cross-section (Fig. 1).The ore-body is divided by a horse of mullock in the northern end into two legs, the eastern and western, which are approximately 250 feet long and averaging 25 feet in width.This ore-body is strong, hard and abrasive with extremely strong walls, an ideal proposition for open stoping and mass blasting.MiningIn all levels above No. 9 the cut and fill method of ore extraction was adopted. Shaft sinking through an amphibolite-granite rock mass experienced rock bursts on the shaft walls and benches. However, rock burst phenomena was exhibited only in granite, which is e1asto-brittle with ability to store strain energy caused by orogenic and man made stresses. To improve ground conditions, blasting of destressing holes at shaft corners was carried out. By this technique rock burst during shaft sinking was minimized, but not eliminated.

Three stages are involved in the complete design and evaluation of an open cut mine. These are:1. design of the optimu,m ultimate pit, and selectionof the optimum mill capacity,2. development of production schedules, with intermediate pit designs, and3. evaluation of the project, based on factors from stages 1 and 2, by means of discounted cash flow analysis.Stage 1 requires relatively complete information on metal distribution, metallurgical performance, and cost factors, which is used to design a series of pits, corresponding to a range of milling rates.For each milling rate considered there is a unique pit design which maximizes operating profitability. The computer outlines this design (in terms of size, shape, and location; tons and grade of ore; and tons of waste), by considering the effect on profitability of mining each block in the mineralized inventory in relation to every other block which would be affected by its removal.The computer selects only those blocks for mining which result in an overall increase in profitability, maintaining pre-determined wall slope conditions throughout.Both operating profitabilities and capital costs increase with throughput, and the two curves will combine to produce a flat peak in net profitabilities at a certain rate, with its associated pit design.Stage 2 can maximize head grades early in the life of the operation. This increases the projected present value, but there are good arguments for maintaining steady head grades throughout the life of the mine.A modification of the programme used in Stage 1 is used here.Stage 3 is a conventional discounted cash flow analysis, using factors obtained in stages 1 and 2. It can be computerised, but a manual treatment is probably just as fast overall.

This paper presents a brief account of the plant which has been developed at Port Pirie to recover, by vacuum distillation, the greater part of the zinc content of desilverized lead. The present plant is an experimental unit, which is run in conjunction with the normal refinery practice, but can be cut out of the circuit. It will shortly be dismantled and duplicate units will be built on the sites chosen for the final plant installation.The unit described here has treated flows of 16 to 37 tons per hour of desilverized lead, to recover 90 to 95 per cent of the zinc contained in it. It is not intended here to detail all aspects of the vacuum dezincing operation, nor the developments which precededthe adoption of this design. The essential features of the present plant will be described and, where these are peculiar to the present experimental location, the intended alteration for the final plant will also be mentioned. OUTLINE OF PLANT AND PROCESSLead issues from the continuous desilverizing kettle at about 350° C. containing about 0·57 per cent Zn. It is conveyed by a tiled launder to the preheater, where it is heated to 580-620° C.Hot lead from the preheater enters the vacuum vessel via a barometric leg. From a reservoir holding about 19 tons of lead it falls by gravity in a thin film exposed to high vacuum (20-50 microns)3 and leaves the vessel via a barometric leg, entering the lead pot. The lead leaves this pot at 540-560° C., containing 0·03 to 0·06 per cent Zn, which is removed, together with residual antimony of 0.02 to 0·06 per cent, by a separate final refining process.

Disposable-tip emf cells at present used in liquid steel can be used to measure the state of oxidation of high-iron slags produced in non-ferrous smelting. This provides a new tool for the control and evaluation of pyrometallurgical operations.An investigation of oxygen potential variations throughout a typical nickel smelter using the flash smelting technique gave a valuable insight into the process. Correlations of oxygen potential with ferric to ferrous oxide ratio and nickel content in slag were in reasonable accord with equilibrium data in the literature indicating that the probes may be used both as a plant investigation tool and possibly as a means of obtaining thermodynamic data for slags.

Cave propagation is a complex process due to interacting variables such as mine geometry, rock mass heterogeneity and complex structural networks and stress fields. The Ernest Henry sublevel cave (SLC) is directly below an open pit, which provided an opportunity to observe and measure rock mass failure as the cave initiated and propagated through the pit wall. This paper describes interaction between the open pit and SLC as well as rock mass failure mechanisms observed from the start of the SLC to surface breakthrough.Cave propagation and slope failure mechanisms were found to be governed by intermediate structures, while the cave shape was largely controlled by cave-scale faults. The open pit, production-level geometry and production draw strategy were also important factors for cave and subsidence growth. Cave propagation was episodic and asymmetric in shape due to the orientation and relative position of geological structures, combined with the effects of the increasing SLC geometry and drawdown from the underlying production levels. The precursors and failure mechanism of a 2.5 Mt wall collapse are also reviewed in detail.Cave growth was simulated using a 3D, non-linear, discontinuum finite element model coupled with Newtonian Cellular Automata. The Triassic Ipswich (SE. Queensland) coals are of bituminous rank. The more exact rank of individual samples was determined by measuring the reflectance of the vitrinite. While in general the rank of the coals increases with stratigraphic depth, minor reversals, probably related to igneous intrusions, occur.The Ipswich coals form a coherent group so far as petrographic type is concerned. All are comparatively rich in vitrite and clarite, cutinite being the common maceral of the exinite group. The mineral contents of all the coals are comparatively high, clay and quartz being most abundant. The coals appear to be of essentially autochthonous origin, and to have been formed under conditions of fairly rapid subsidence.While the use of the coals is at present restricted to combustion, most have pronounced coking properties, as would be predicted from their petrographic composition and reflectance. However, the high mineral content of the coals would be a limiting factor in their use for coke-making.INTRODUCTIONDuring the last ten years, the Division of Coal Research, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization has carried out an extensive investigation of Australian coals, providing a wide range of analyses of most of the important of them. Special attention has been given in recent years to Queensland coals.Most seams were sampled as a number of subsections, enabling the internal variations, as well as the overall properties, to be assessed. The exploitation of primary ores using cave mining caused new challenges at the El Teniente mine that required changes to a number of conventional cave mining practices. For example, in the 1970s and 1980s, panel caving was introduced to manage certain geotechnical and operational conditions. Today, El Teniente mine is facing new challenges associated with deep cave mining and establishing its New Mine Level (NML) project, which is located 240 m below the Esmeralda operating cave.The engineering and development phases for this new project have been largely based on experience and lessons learned throughout the history of primary ore exploitation at El Teniente mine, particularly knowledge about seismicity control, the management of collapses and operational practices. For example, previous experience demonstrated that seismicity could be managed by preconditioning using large-scale hydraulic fracturing (HF). HF has been systematically applied in the column of ore above the undercut planned for the NML project and below the production or extraction level, where the main ventilation and haulage infrastructure are to be located.This paper discusses how this has been achieved and is based on previous experience of preconditioning using HF, which has been applied in the selection and management of exploitation techniques and associated planning strategies and design parameters for the NML project.CITATION:Pardo, C and Rojas, E, 2016. The application of cost updating with the aid of cost indices is reviewed with particular regard to the mining industry. Examples of applicable cost index series are included with values given for the last ten years. The compilation of the indices is discussed with consideration given to the possible sources of error inherent in their application to specific mining cost problems.

Since zinc was first deposited at Risdon in February, 1917, provision of the most economical cathode assembly has been a subject of extensive research, the major problems being corrosion and efficient use of power.From the corrosion viewpoint, a perfect cathode is one in which the life of the headbar and the deposition sheet are the same. However, corrosion usually concentrates in a narrow zone across the face- of the sheet, resulting in breakages which, before the advent of argon arc welding, meant a loss of a 'complete assembly.Attempts to extend sheet life included use of thicker sheets, multitudinous protective coatings applied with varying degrees of success, re-rolling, and for a time, aluminium consumption was reduced when broken sheets found re-use as protecting strips. This latter economy became impracticable when electrode spacing was reduced for greater efficiency in power utilization.As an integral part of the electrode, the headbar was modified accordingly. Copper headbars, although more corrosion resistant, were replaced by aluminium due to a possibility of dissolved, copper promoting deterioration.Thicker electrodes and regulated spacing reduced internal shorting, whilst provision of knife-edge type supports on both contact and insulator ends of headbars aided in electrode centralising and continuous electrical conduction.After much experimeIitation, an assembly has been evolved which, with the aid of argon arc welding and tbe use of minimum additional aluminium, permits comparable headbar and sheet lives, combined with good electrical conduction throughout the life of the cathode.INTRODUCTION Over 300 tons of zinc are produced daily at Risdon from a purified zinc sulphate solution by electrolysis, the zinc being deposited upon all-aluminium (except for copper contact) cathodes. It is stripped in 72-hour cycles from the cathodes, melted and cast into the customary rectangular slabs.

The past 10 years has seen use of computers become widespread in the mining/exploration industry (including coal, precious and base metals, oil/gas and industrial minerals). This paper will concentrate on the use of computers as a tool to provide technical solutions (including data management, mine planning and operational support) to this industry rather than the use of computers to aid accounting, maintenance and inventory (æcommercialÆ) applications. This paper will review the processes and benefits of the use of computers in mining. We then review the use of technical computing locally here in New Zealand and see what business benefits local users have found from using computers in mining. We have, in research for this paper, spoken with mining software vendors from around the world to find out what is currently the æbest practiceÆ in the industry. The paper will then list what those vendors see as the ultimate improvement on the cards for the future of mining software.
