This paper summarises the current status of the mining sector in Poland in terms of vertical transport system safety. Selected results of research programs conducted at the AGH-UST relating to mine hoist system safety are reviewed. The conclusions support the notion that the costs of vertical transport systems can be reduced, while at the same time maintaining the required safety and reliability levels. Novel solutions: movable fender beams HWR, linings modar« and the integrated shock absorbers PHH for conveyance guiding systems fully confirm this hypothesis.

This paper is based on a case study from a mine site that operates two gyratory primary crushers. These crushers were encountering problems, which included inconsistent P80, reduced liner life tonnage and, on some occasions, catastrophic failure of the liners.As part of an evaluation process, both crushers were ‘mapped’ using a technology for condition monitoring and modelling of the crusher’s wear components. The technology provides comprehensive coverage of the crusher’s concaves and mantle at 100 mm intervals. It also automatically assesses wear rate between inspections and determines the highest wear areas. Outcomes include projected optimum reline dates at target replacement thicknesses, the identification of asymmetrical wear patterns, and the accurate measurement of open and closed (OSS/CSS) side settings.A comprehensive study was performed to optimise the performance of both these crushers at site. Over a period of seven liner service lives, the strategies to improved performance included liner analysis (concaves and mantle profile analysis), tonnes per day (t/d) and tonnes per hour (t/h) analysis, mantle reutilisation, detection and control of loose concaves, and detection and control of uneven wear and hot spots.These strategies resulted in the improved mechanical and operational performance of both crushers through concave and mantle redesign, OSS/CSS control, accurate wear forecasting plus other initiatives.As a result of these initiatives, the site now experiences benefits which include consistent product size, increased tonnes per hour (t/h) for both crushers and the liner life tonnage has doubled. The desire for minimising impacts of mining activities on the environment, and in particular, water resources; is usually tempered by the costs and practicalities of implementing æbest practiceÆ measures. This paper briefly discusses the theoretical and practical options for water management for typical mines and quarries in a range of environments to assess if adverse impacts can be completely eliminated or at least be perceived as doing so. The regulatory requirements for water resources management are usually an essential part of mine planning and operations that can be a primary focus for all stakeholders. As such they can distract attention from implementing best practice in water management for the benefit of the environment and the community for altruistic reasons that have a long-term benefit for the mining industry as a whole. Cost-effective options for supply, demand and quality management of water that comply with basic regulatory requirements are readily available. Making a mine æinvisibleÆ in a practical sense, in terms of impacts on water resources would require eliminating potentially contaminated discharges, minimising demand, maximising reuse and recycling and putting back a healthy proportion of the clean water that is taken out of the natural environment for use in mine operations. This may sound simple enough and there are many well-known standard approaches that are usually applied. But which are the most effective, and who benefits? New approaches to water management are becoming more affordable and can benefit the bottom line as well as the environment, but can they make a mine ædisappearÆ? The perception of whether a mine is æinvisibleÆ in terms of its impacts on water resources is as important as the actions taken to try to achieve such an objective. The viewpoints and thresholds of perceptions of the different stakeholders are therefore relevant to how ævisibleÆ mining activities become.

Material sampling theory is well established in mineral process monitoring, improvement and control. It has been much enhanced by fundamental contributions due to Gy. When GyÆs sampling theory is applied to sampling inspection and monitoring, it provides estimates of average quality or extent of contamination. It also provides estimates of uncertainty, but these often ignore uncertainty in estimated variograms or other measures of variability. Risk assessment is often an implied task in sampling inspection and quality monitoring. A valid technique of risk assessment needs to take into account the uncertainty in the variational measures themselves. Standard statistical tolerance limit calculations which do take such uncertainty into account can be adapted to develop a technique for handling uncertainty in variational measures such as the variogram. Data from a published example is used to illustrate the technique.

The lunar subsurface, particularly the lava tubes formed by ancient volcanic activity, presents a promising environment for establishing safe and sustainable human habitats on the Moon. Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), widely used for excavating tunnels on Earth, offer a potential solution for developing these subsurface spaces. However, the unique lunar conditions, including extreme temperatures, high vacuum, radiation, and the extraordinary strength and abrasiveness of lunar rocks, necessitate significant adaptations to existing TBM technology. This study investigates the feasibility of utilising TBMs for lunar subsurface exploration and base construction, addressing the challenges posed by the harsh lunar environment. We review previous conceptual designs for lunar TBMs, highlighting their strengths and limitations in addressing these challenges. Additionally, we explore innovative excavation methods, such as microwave-assisted rock weakening and undercutting techniques, to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of lunar TBM operations. By evaluating the geological characteristics of the lunar crust and analysing the potential of lava tubes as launching points for TBM operations, this study provides a comprehensive assessment of the technical requirements and operational considerations for lunar TBM implementation. The findings of this research contribute to the growing body of knowledge on lunar base development and pave the way for future human exploration and utilisation of the Moon’s subsurface resources.

Draw control at Premier Mine is considered important to avoid conditions of isolated draw, which results in early waste ingress, compaction of the kimberlite ore and loss of ore reserves. The Premier Mine kimberlite pipe is unique in that the pipe is cut at a depth of 400 metres below surface by a 75 metre thick gabbro sill. All cave mining at Premier is below the sill and failure to exercise good draw control could cause early ingress of gabbro waste. Gabbro causes problems in the diamond recovery plant and the amount of gabbro sent to the plant needs to be closely monitored. Fortunately coarse gabbro fragments are easy to recognise in drawpoints. It was anticipated that only 85 per cent of available ore would be drawn from the blocks immediately overlain by the gabbro sill before excessive gabbro waste forced the closure of drawpoints. Data on tons drawn per drawpoint and loaded per LHD as well as the tons tipped per pass is gathered by the vehicle monitoring and control (VMAC) system and information recorded by the load-haul-dump (LHD) drivers. Draw control staff monitor drawpoints on a shift basis and record the occurrence, type and height of hang-ups. Information pertaining to the status of the drawpoint in terms of support, waste and availability is also recorded. A database has been compiled that has been used to analyse the overall pattern of draw control, the frequency of occurrence of different types of hang-ups, secondary blasting efficiencies and drawpoint and LHD productivity. The gabbro sill has provided a unique marker horizon that has allowed the arrival of rock from a level 100 metres above the production level to be recognised. Data shows that ore migrates extensively towards groups of drawpoints that are heavily drawn with many drawpoints more than 100 per cent drawn before gabbro waste was recognised. This indicates that an accurate mixing algorithm is essential for good draw control. Data on tons drawn, drawpoint availability, productivity and the occurrence of various types of hang-ups has allowed better control of the mining operation and provided data for planning future caves. In the BA5 mining block a drawpoint spacing of 22 metres, horizontally across the major apex, has still allowed drawpoints to be pulled to waste with no loss of ore. In the BB1E mining block the drawpoint spacing has been increased to 23 metres and no problems have been experienced to-date. Future initiatives centre on improving the data gathering integrity of the vehicle monitoring and control system and a linear programme that will optimise draw control and productivity.

Intrusion related ore deposits are widespread in the Central Peruvian Cordillera Occidental and adjacent high-plains to the east and include porphyry Cu (-Au, Mo; eg Morococha), Cu-Zn (Pb-) skarn (eg Antamina), Pb-Zn-Ag carbonate hosted vein deposits (eg Uchucchacua), cordilleran base metal (eg Cerro de Pasco) and epithermal deposits (eg Quicay). Geochronology and petrochemistry of intrusive rocks associated with mineralisation reveals that: most ore deposits were emplaced in the late middle to early late Miocene; and are related to calc-alkaline granodioritic igneous rocks with Sm/Yb >3, Sr/Y >40 and Y/Th <1.5. The largest deposits, including Antamina, Colquijirca and Cerro de Pasco are associated with intrusions with Sm/Yb >4 and which, as indicated by Pb and Sr isotopic data, have undergone relatively moderate middle and upper crustal assimilation. The chemical signature of igneous rocks related to mineralisation likely reflects melt equilibration in the lower crust at a crustal thickness of more than 45 km. Mineralisation was favoured by a change from normal to flat subduction, resulting in increased compression, crustal thickening and subsequent cessation of the magmatic arc. Premiocene ore deposits do occur, but are restricted to a broad E-W corridor between Uchucchacua and Milpo and probably were controlled by a crustal-scale structural discontinuity across the strike of theAndes. Not all igneous rocks with high Sm/Yb and Sr/Y ratios did acquire their trace element signature in the lower crust. Petrographic and Pb isotopic evidence indicates shallow crustal hornblende fractionation or assimilation of pelitic material as possible causes for high trace element ratios in some rocks. These are apparently unrelated to polymetallic mineralisation. Thus, critical evaluation of petrographic and geochemical data in metallogenetic studies, especially in areas with complex basement architecture such as Central Peru is critical and should not be reduced to simple trace element ratios. In classical drill and blast underground mining methods, especially narrow vein operations economic quantities of broken ore can be left behind following normal mucking operations on the stope floors. The ore left behind can have significant economic value and if not collected can be lost forever. This paper reviews techniques for cleaning this material from stopes that have been used in the past and reviews possible modern techniques that can be applied to ensure this valuable material is removed from the stopes.

The approach to risk management during the procurement of major projects often has a significant outcome on the ultimate delivery of a project. The NZ$1.4 B Waterview Connection project is the largest and most complex project yet undertaken by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and the procurement process for an alliance contract was refined to provide compliance with the International Tunnel Insurance Group (ITIG) Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (TCoP). The principle of shared risk within an alliance incentivises a common understanding of project risks prior to finalising the alliance agreement and therefore enables superior risk management through design, construction and beyond. Risk management practices need to be instigated well in advance of commercial phases, so that commercial competition does not lead to a significant elevation of project risk. In particular the practice of gaining commercial advantage by taking on a potentially unmanageable level of risk is one of the outcomes to be avoided by the TCoP.During the procurement phase the NZTA placed high value on design and construction mitigation measures proposed in order to address ground risks, as is appropriate for a major tunnel project. In order to achieve alignment on the level of geotechnical risks an Alliance Geotechnical Baseline Report (AGBR) process was developed.This paper describes the measures taken during the procurement process to achieve certainty with respect to outcomes and minimise project risks whilst also achieving value for money. The definition and recognition of silver minerals is very difficult. In general such minerals occur at low concentration and can be hard to identify and measure using conventional optical mineralogy. The present paper describes the use of the QEM*SEM system to tackle this problem and provide information of use to the metallurgist. Three aspects of QEM*SEM are used to special advantage in this application. Firstly the automated mode of operation is used to make a rapid search for the sparse phases. Secondly the X-ray capability is used to identify the mineral phases. Finally the image analysis programs quantify the distributions of the minerals which are found. The paper deals with the identification stage of the process and with the use of the data which can be derived. Silver minerals which covered a range of ore types and composition were collected and studied in detail. On the basis of these measurements and information received from a number of mining companies regarding the important minerals, a classification table was prepared. This table listed about 40 different silver mineral types which could be identified by QEM*SEM and which were of interest in silver recovery processes. Where the silver occurs in solid solution in concentrations greater than about one per cent, the silver content in the species was subdivided into ranges based on statistical intervals. The QEM*SEM system was programmed to recognise these as separate species. Examples are presented of the use of the system in defining the type and morphology of the silver mineralisation to assist in the assessment of batch flotation test Samples.

Adsorption tests have been carried out to elucidate the interaction mechanism between dextrin and sulphide minerals. Sulphides such as galena and heazlewoodite exhibit high affinity adsorption over the pH range that coincides with the iep of lead and nickel hydroxides, and is suggestive of chemical interaction. The adsorption behaviour with respect to the sulphides of copper is of the low affinity type, and follows a different pattern. The adsorption studies on graphite, support the chemical interaction mechanism, with the metallic impurities serving as adsorption centres. In conformity with the proposed mechanism selective separation of galena from chalcopyrite and heazlewoodite from chalcocite has been Achieved.

An estimation geologist has many tools in their kit and using the correct one for the job is vital for creating a useful model. Reconciliation is a key step to monitor the performance of a resource model and to ensure the correct tools have been selected and appropriate parameters are set. This paper presents an example of refining the estimation methodology for a Channel Iron Deposit (CID), resulting in an improved model. Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) CIDs are unique iron ore deposits located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and contribute a significant volume to the world’s seaborne iron ore market. A problematic feature of these deposits is the irregular dispersion of clay pods that cannot be delineated with confidence within the resolution of the exploration drilling. Resource to grade control reconciliation showed an over-prediction of high-grade material in the resource model. A fresh approach was required to improve grade and tonnage predictions. Historically, clay pods were delineated using traditional wireframing techniques and estimated using ordinary kriging with hard boundaries. The new method utilised indicator kriging to estimate the probability of clay. Probabilities generated from the indicator kriging estimate were used as an additional weighting following the ordinary kriging of grades. Results showed indicator kriging improved global high-grade tonnes reconciliation, however, as expected, it did not improve the spatial prediction of clay. Based on improved reconciliation results indicator kriging has now been adopted as a suitable alternative for analogous CIDs at RTIO. These improvements benefit the mine planning process, but do not replace grade control models.

The role of marketing in the development of a new project will be affected by political, commercial and technical pressures. Marketing success will be determined by the ability to predict and react to tomorrow's environment. In the Australian coal industry there is an emerging transition from production to marketing orientation. As a result, greater technical awareness of customer needs will be required. In particular, the industrial product nature of coal markets will need to be recognised. Greater attention will also need to be paid to product options and quality in mine planning. Marketing personnel will become more involved at every phase of the development of a new mine.

Over the last decade the adoption of autonomous technology has proven its potential to fundamentally alter the mining industry, offering significant improvements in safety and productivity. Automation levels are now increasing exponentially across all parts of the supply chain from drilling, haulage, processing, rail and shipping to the maintenance of the above. However, the management of human error risk is also becoming increasingly complex as the disconnect between the people who operate and interact with mining equipment and those that design the autonomous systems grows in terms of skill and expertise. Furthermore, as comfort levels with automation increases amongst operators, complacency is increasing as the initial functional safety benefits have been realised. This paper introduces an innovative concept that unites two distinct fields, functional safety and behavioural economics, to address the complex issue of human error risk in autonomous mining operations. Functional safety, a well-established field in engineering involves identifying potential hazards, assessing risks and designing systems in a way that minimises the chances of accidents and limits their consequences. Meanwhile, behavioural economics takes a data centric approach to analysing the psychological aspects of human decision-making, acknowledging and seeking to understand the errors that can originate from cognitive biases and heuristics. This paper seeks to bridge these domains by emphasising that human error in autonomous mining is not solely a technical issue but is deeply influenced by human behaviour and decision-making processes. By incorporating insights from behavioural economics, we can better predict, prevent and manage human errors in the mining sector. By applying principles from both disciplines to a recent incident example we will explore how cognitive biases can impact peoples’ interactions with autonomous mining equipment. This interdisciplinary approach will not only enhance the design and implementation of functional safety measures in mining but also lead to the development of people centric solutions that consider the inherent fallibility of people. We will explore how human centred design can help bridge the gap between these two domains and apply systems thinking for a universal approach. Through an indepth case study analysis and empirical data, our research aims to provide actionable insights and practical recommendations for mining industry professionals, regulators and stakeholders involved in the safe integration of autonomous systems.

Given the ongoing global crises of climate change and nature loss, with the World Economic Forum (WEF) identifying them as the top risks to global economies in terms of both likelihood and impact in the coming ten years (WEF, 2022), there is increasing, pressing demand for companies to demonstrate they understand their climate and nature related risks and look toward contributing genuine beneficial environmental outcomes. Within the mining industry, mine closure is the obvious field in which climate and nature positive strategy can be linked with operations. To do so, there is a need to challenge long-held assumptions around closure in the mining and regulatory context; particularly, to shift the focus from closing individual mines to considering regional opportunity generation and value creation.
