In November 1969, New Zealand Steel Ltd pioneered the commercial use of the SL/RN solid fuel direct reduction process to make sponge iron as a feed material for electric arc furnaces. Serious process problems with the use of green balls and coal injection were progressively overcome. The process was developed by New Zealand Steel along a radical route, of feeding the fine grained raw ironsand concentrate and coal directly to the kiln. Contemporaneously with this development of direct reduction, steelmaking process innovations were made that enabled the arc furnaces to operate successfully with the high volumes of acid slag.

Data is the most valuable commodity in the information age. The use of data enables productivity, opportunity, and safety in various sectors and industries. In the late 1950s, Alan Turing coined the term artificial intelligence (AI) to describe the ability of computing machines to think and behave like humans through simplified reasoning and logic (Turing, 1950). This concept of mimicking human behaviour is the building block of machine learning algorithms used in most AI software. The ‘learning’ aspect in machine learning requires data, that is, information on the environment or the objective, to be modelled or predicted using AI. An AI-enabled system aims to predict the unknown faster and intuitively. Intuition in software algorithms can be described as probabilistic, learned through the data that the AI system is trained on; indeed, the AI software cannot predict the future, but it can provide the likelihood of an event/action occurring, thereby enabling decisions or responses to prevent it or take action. Just as various industries have adopted AI as the tool of choice to seek new opportunities (examples: medical research, self-driving cars, financial modelling), the mining industry, too, has been receptive to embracing AI for problem-solving and maximising the value of its business.

With the next mining boom looming, the industry will once again struggle to meet skills needed as the current generation boomers are set to retire. In order to meet these needs it is going to need to focus on what underutilised human resources - in particular women - want!   Women comprise around 14 per cent of the mining workforce, compared with a 45 per cent participation rate in the work force overall. Within the industry, women still make up only one per cent of trades people, eight per cent of operators/production employees, 12 per cent of engineers and 11 per cent of executive management.   It may be worth pointing out that mining has an age profile skewed towards the older end of the spectrum. When it comes to employee retention, what women want may be a good starting point to examine, more broadly, what all employees might want (but are too afraid to ask!).   Women in mining want the following: To be scrutinised for their work and performance, not their personal lives, appearance or relationships. True pay equity. This is addressed at lower levels between companies but at professional levels the salary differentials begin to appear and little is done to identify why this continues to be the case. Recognition and acceptance that women can have different work-styles, and that diversity of work-styles is an asset to be nurtured not a threat to be neutralised! Recognition that a more diverse workforce demographic that better reflects society at large will assist the company in its dealings with many diverse stakeholders from society at large. For employers to recognise that a career break to accommodate caring responsibilities does not mean that an employee's commitment to progressing their career is any less than that of someone who has not taken a career break. Similarly, for employers to recognise that working part-time for to accommodate caring responsibilities does not mean that an employee's commitment to progressing their career is any less than someone who works a more traditional roster. Access to affordable and quality child care compatible with mining rosters in mining towns. Zero tolerance for bullying and harassment, and workplace cultures that promote respect and safety. In a coal mine there are many substances capable of ignition under certain circumstances, which can be placed in the following groups: ordinary combustible solids, dusts, liquids and vapours, gases, metals and plastics. There are many factors influencing ignition, including temperature, minimum ignition energy, particle size, explosion pressure level, rate of pressure rise, specific energy content and also explosive limit. Not all are applicable in every case. Frictional ignition of methane is an accident statistic of increasing concern and is considered in some detail. Practical measures that can be taken to reduce the incidence of frictional ignitions are considered, and also possible ways of ignition suppression.

Over the past forty years colliery management has coped with intensive mechanisation and other rationalisation of traditional conditions to accomplish increases to outputs by miners, mines and nationally. The basic managerial function of planning, organising, directing and controlling have adjusted and expanded to current management demands, including the detail of achieving the highest possible efficiency, particularly in forward planning. Although industrial aspects have vastly improved, there are lingering problems. Safety is not necessarily the basic ingredient of any industrial events-which occur but is always paramount. Likewise some legislative changes may have elements of political and particular vested interests and conservation of technical expertise may be threatened by such frustrations. Not only technical excellence is required, but particular attributes of the individual are required in management evolving from "simple owner management to the complete corporate approach required for the multidisciplined operations of to-day".

Mining companies often view water quality as an environmental issue. The importance of water quality as a production related issue in mineral beneficiation is greatly underestimated at many mineral processing operations. While most mine sites have comprehensive water balance data for water quantity, the information regarding the quality of water supplies available on site is limited, inadequate or non-existent. The seasonal variations in process water quality and changes in the composition of various water streams are not known. Despite the fact that water represents about 80 to 90 per cent of the volume of mineral pulp processed in a flotation plant, the influence of process water composition on flotation performance is often poorly understood. The process water used at mineral processing operations is made up from a number of available water sources, which can be classified as recycled water streams or make-up waters. The recycled water streams are commonly the tailings and concentrate thickener overflows, filtrate from the concentrate filtration plant and tailings dam return water. Make-up waters can originate from a variety of sources: surface waters (rivers, lakes, reservoirs, dams), groundwater (wells and springs), mains water (potable water), treated and untreated sewage waters and industrial effluents. Mineral processing plants are increasingly recycling water to reduce demand for fresh water and minimise the discharge of wastewater to the environment. However, increasing water recycling can have adverse effects on process water quality and ultimately on the performance of mineral separation processes. The main reasons for reduced plant performance due to water recycling are the accumulation of organic and inorganic compounds in the process water and increased microbiological activities. Other detrimental effects of water recycling can be increased reagent consumption and inefficient dewatering of tailings and concentrates. Recycling of water also tends to accumulate very fine suspended particles. Excessive amounts of slimes in the process water can also have an adverse effect on mineral beneficiation processes. The main constituents of process water are dissolved gases (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide), colloidal and suspended solids of inorganic and organic nature (including micro-organisms: dead or alive), dissolved organics (natural organic matter, residual reagents, reaction and decomposition by-products of chemical reagents, impurities in the reagents and metabolites originating from microbiological activities) and inorganic compounds (acids, alkalis, inorganic salts, metal ions, anions and heavy metals). Inputs to the chemical composition of process waters are: dissolution of soluble mineral phases present in the ore, surface oxidation followed by dissolution of mineral particles during grinding and mineral processing, the chemical composition of various make-up waters and recycled water streams, and reagent additions during mineral processing. The beneficial or detrimental impact of process water quality on flotation performance can be attributed to a number of subprocesses: adsorption and/or precipitation of inorganic and organic species present in the process water onto the surface of mineral particles, chemical reactions between process water constituents and the chemical species present on the surface of mineral particles and interactions between the chemical and microbiological species present in the process water and the various reagent species added in solution during mineral processing. Dissolved chemical species such as calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, lead, zinc, nickel, sulfates, phosphates and carbonates can have a strong effect on the electrokinetic properties of oxide and sulfide minerals, at certain pH ranges. Several reactions can occur at the solid-liquid interface that can play an important role in determining surface adsorption of reagents. Solid-liquid interfacial properties of mineral particles can be significantly affected by the conformation of adsorbed and precipitated reagent layers, which in turn are determined by solution chemistry. The chemical and microbiological constituents of process water can have a significant effect on liquid-gas interfacial properties and have a strong influence on froth height, strength and stability during flotation. Water chemistry can play an important role in determining the interactions between minerals present in the ore and the chemical reagents added in the mineral processing plant by altering the reagent-solution and mineral-solution equilibria. These interactions can include dissolution, micellisation and precipitation of reagents, dissolution of minerals contained in the ore followed by hydrolysis, complexation, adsorption and precipitation of dissolved chemical species and reactions between dissolved ions and various reagent species present in solution. All of the above mentioned subprocesses can ultimately have a significant effect on the efficiency of mineral processing operations. In this presentation, a systematic approach for assessing the composition of water supplies available at the mine sites and for investigating the influence of process water quality on the efficiency of mineral processing operations will be discussed. The consequences of mixing different quality water streams to produce the required volumes of process water for some flotation plants will be highlighted. To substantiate the water quality issues described in this paper some examples are given from a metalliferous processing perspective. However, the topics described in the paper are not only relevant to metalliferous processing but to all other type of mineral processing operations as well. In fact the principles described in this paper have also been successfully applied to the coal flotation industry.

Sustainability in its simplest assessment has been defined as æmeeting the needs of the present without jeopardising the needs of future generationsÆ. For the mining industry alone, this statement could indeed be interpreted by the many cynics in our community as an oxymoron; as miningÆs very existence requires the extraction and consumption of finite resources. The Big Wainihinihi River and tunnel are located on the western side of the Southern Alps of New Zealand within the active Alpine Fault zone, which marks the boundary between the Pacific and Australian Tectonic Plates. The tunnel was built over 100 years ago to supply water for gold mining, but it now conveys water from a high-energy intake to a canal that supplies three of TrustPower’s hydro-electric power stations with a combined installed generating capacity of 10 MW. Part of the tunnel passes through an unstable 50° schist slope, which fi rst suffered a wedge failure in the 1929 Arthur’s Pass Earthquake and was reinstated in the mid-1970s for hydro generation. In 2008, TrustPower’s monitoring system showed that the wedge failure had remobilised and that urgent remediation was required.Harker Underground Construction (Harker) was awarded a design-build contract to restore the tunnel to service by tunnelling a new central section. Their geotechnical engineers, Peters and Cheung, reviewed the tunnel’s stability and proposed a new, safer tunnel alignment, deep behind the failure wedges. This work was based on their failure model, cost-benefit studies, and engineering geology completion mapping at the time of re-opening.Construction innovation was an important factor in ensuring the project’s success, as were detailed geological and geotechnical information, a robust methodology, strong client relationship and planning. To suit the varying rock conditions and restricted space, Harker combined a traditional drill-and-blast method with light-weight modular steel sets and timber supports to reduce construction costs and mitigate support risk. To make material handing easier in the tight conditions, a special electric locomotive was designed and built and blasting confi gurations were adapted to suit varying rock conditions in the highly fractured schist.The isolated site meant interesting and unexpected challenges, particularly communications and resources (both human and material). Despite that, the project was completed within budget, on schedule, and with no lost-time injuries.

MIM Holdings Limited (MIM) committed to a long-term future in copper in the Carpentaria Mineral Province in 1996 with the development of the Enterprise and Ernest Henry mines, and an upgrade of MIMsÆ copper smelter in Mount Isa, and copper refinery in Townsville. The upgrade of the copper smelter will enable the smelter to produce 250 000 tpa of copper with a single primary smelting unit, the copper Isasmelt furnace installed in 1992. The copper Isasmelt furnace currently smelts concentrate containing 145 000 tpa copper. To reduce the risk associated with the copper smelter upgrade, and shorten the ramp up time of the upgraded smelter, two high-rate trials were undertaken in 1997 to demonstrate that the copper Isasmelt furnace could, with an additional 525 tpd of tonnage oxygen, treat concentrates containing 250 000 tpa copper. During the trials the concentrate feed rate to the Isasmelt furnace was increased from its average rate of 100 tph of concentrate to 150 tph of concentrate. The increase in the capacity of the furnace was achieved by: supplementing the installed tonnage oxygen capacity of 595 tpd with an additional 300 tpd supply; reducing variability in the furnace feed rate from ¦25 per cent to less than ¦5 per cent; and reducing tramp air. The Isasmelt furnace smelted concentrate at a rate of 140 to 150 tph for four hours 25 minutes during Trial 1, and at a rate of 150 tph of concentrate for five hours and 30 minutes during Trial 2. The oxygen utilisation was 100 per cent during the trials with the process remaining under control. As a result of the development work for the trials the average treatment rate of the furnace under normal conditions increased by ten per cent.

The aim of this paper is to broadly review the purposes of valuations and the methods used to calculate them. Examples are provided by coal and alluvial gold properties. Important factors are consistency, how to deal with uncertainty, and the selection of discount rates. The purposes of valuation are seen as: 1.  valuations for sale; within this category are sales to third parties, sales between partners, and vendor valuations for prospectuses; 2.  to provide bankable estimates for financing; and 3. to provide values for local body rating. The methods used depend on the purpose of the valuation and the amount of information to hand.

In mineral processing industries grinding is the most energy-consuming process. A tumbling mill is an essential grinding equipment widely used for particle size reduction. Power consumption, impact forces and trajectory paths are critical parameters for characterising a tumbling mill to determine grinding efficiency. The effect of lifters and mill speed plays a vital role in such parameters. However, most of the studies ignore the impact of the lifter and do not investigate the effect of slurry dynamics on charge motion. The focus of the present work is to prepare a computational model that can accurately predict the complex multi-phase dynamics of charge particles, air and slurry inside the mill using a model that couples computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the discrete element method (DEM). The details of impact forces with lifter profiles and mill speed variations will be refined even further using the CFD-DEM coupling approach. The slurry-air free surface is modelled using the volume of fluid (VOF) method, and the charge motion is modelled using the DEM. The phases are coupled using the interface momentum exchange between the charge and the fluid slurry. The coupled model is validated against experimental results from the positron-emitting particle tracking (PEPT) data. The validated model compares the effect of slurry content on charge dynamics with the dry DEM model. The presence of slurry is observed to dampen the tangential and shear contact forces.

North Stradbroke Island is a large sand mass offshore from south east Queensland. Dredging for mineral sands commenced there in 1956 and the rehabilitation discussed in this paper was commenced in 1967. The frontal dunes have a long history of instability, with little vegetation prior to mining. Re-establishment of the naturally stable contours is essential, and their rehab- ilitation is described. Vegetated high dunes present different problems requiring attention to regeneration of the native species. Methods developed over the past eight years are proving successful.,

Climate change and global warming present a significant challenge as unsustainable levels of greenhouse gas emissions arising from human activities continue to be emitted. The cement industry is responsible for between five and ten per cent of annual world carbon dioxide emissions; most arising from the manufacture of Portland cement (PC). An effective way of reducing emissions is by incorporating supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as partial PC replacements. SCMs are silicate or aluminosilicate based pozzolanic materials which, in finely divided form, combine with water and calcium hydroxide (lime), liberated by cement hydration, to form compounds exhibiting cementitious properties. Pitchstone is such an aluminosilicate and has the potential to act as an effective pozzolan for partial replacement of PC. In North Queensland, Australia, a vast deposit of pitchstone is mined and processed for expandable perlite aggregate. During the classification stage of the excavated natural material, waste pitchstone fines (PF) less than 0.5 mm in size are generated. This study evaluates the waste PF as a viable, eco-friendly pozzolan for the partial replacement of PC. The reactivity of the PF is compared to fly ash (FA), using the pozzolanic compressive strength activity index (SAI) after seven, 28, and 91 days ageing at 20 per cent and 40 per cent PC substitutions. PF was found to be comparable to FA as a pozzolan at 20 per cent PC substitution at all ages tested. However, for the 40 per cent substitution blends significant strength was only achieved at 91 days ageing for the FA blend. The pozzolanic reactivity was also investigated using thermogravimetric analysis to determine the degree of free lime present after 91 days. In all cases where an SCM was added, the free lime was observed to be consumed with increasing age.

Fatigue is it the newest buzz word or is fatigue a real phenomenon that is creating safety and organisational risk for you? There is no debate that fatigue is natural, and it affects us all, just like gravity; however, there has been much debate on the severity of its impact in the workplace. For many years the impact was not measurable, hidden out of sight and, quite frankly, written off as the infamous ‘operator error’. Over the last several years, advancements in technology have provided safety and health professionals, sleep scientists, fatigue experts and organisations with the ability to monitor and detect fatigue events in real time, as well as predict and monitor increased risk for fatigue events. Caterpillar Safety Services has assembled an extensive and exceptional set of technologies that will provide the best methods and data to measure the impact of fatigue. Remote sensing techniques can be used to map joint sets in a rock mass for the estimation of in situ block size distribution and improved optimisation of blasting. This paper reviews remote sensing using photogrammetry and laser mapping for mapping rock masses and presents elements of the analyses applied to data acquired with these mapping technologies. These techniques enable a user to map areas of hundreds of square metres rapidly with high precision. Using this data computer programs such as Sirojoint can provide estimates of joint position and orientation with orientation measurement accuracies better than one degree. The paper describes the use of remote mapping and provides potential users with a description of some of the advantages and limitations of the mapping techniques and the data they produce. Mapping of lithology and structure of rock masses is an important task required in many areas of mining and construction. It is a complex task routinely performed using established techniques developed to provide consistent results under a wide range of conditions. The techniques for data acquisition and analysis described in this paper enable more accurate mapping to be performed rapidly and enable mapping of inaccessible sections of a rock mass. These techniques will provide geologists and geotechnical engineers with more detailed, accurate data than previously available.

In industry and power production and distribution large quantities of fine wastes are produced. These are above all fly ash and phosphogypsum. Attempts are made to use them as secondary raw materials in industry and construction. Since they contain dangerous and harmful components or are nonhomogeneous their direct application is limited so that they are treated as waste. This paper reports on tests conducted with the aim of agglomerating the mentioned fine industrial wastes by pelletisation. The aim of this resarch was to obtain agglomerated product suitable for handling, transport and dumping. At the same time efforts were made to incapsulate harmful components by producing pellets with protective shells. Next, pellets without binders and with different binders were produced. Strength, resistance to freezing and solubility of pellets were tested. All the fine industrial wastes under survey were found to be suitable for pelletisation. The utilisation of appropriate binders ensures pellet strength required for safe handling and ecologically sound deposition of pelleted Material.
