The complexity in treating environmentally harmful impurities such as As, Sb, Bi from the base metal matte or metal in the smelting stage are responsible for the high cost of the refining process. The impurity capacities (such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth) of slags were calculated a priori using Reddy-Blander (RB) model. The capacity predictions were for a wide range of matte and slag compositions in copper smelting conditions. The calculated impurities capacities and impurity distribution ratios results are in good agreement with the available experimental and industrial slags data. The a priori knowledge of impurities is useful for reduction of energy consumption and enhanced environmental control in the current and future non-ferrous metal processes.

This paper presents the results of research work conducted to assess if aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) can be used to treat roaster calcine leach residues such that recovery of gold in this material can be achieved with subsequent application of the thiocyanate (SCN-) leaching system. The project is mainly aimed at assessing an alternative use for sulfur dioxide gas generated during flotation concentrate roasting. The calcine leach residue sample used in the study contained 2.56 g/t gold. The reason for this high level of residual gold is thought to be due to gold surface passivation by thin iron oxide films, presence of gold in solid solution with refractory iron oxides and encapsulation of gold in the structure of these iron oxides.The study was conducted in three stages. The first stage was the characterisation of a sample from a roaster calcine leach residue. The second stage in the project was a set of leaching tests to assess the feasibility of using aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide to reductively dissolve refractory iron oxide mineral phases contained in the calcine. The final objective was to assess the efficiency of thiocyanate, a gold complexing ligand stable under acidic and oxidative conditions, to extract gold liberated during sulfur dioxide leaching.The study showed that the reductive sulfur dioxide treatment of the calcine leach residues followed by oxidative thiocyanate leaching to extract gold was not a particularly efficient process as only around 20 per cent gold could be extracted. Leaching the calcine residues by any of these systems separately also extracted the same amount of gold (12 - 14 per cent) implying that irrespective of the solution potential, the acidity helps dissolution of gold encapsulating minerals, mostly hematite, but at a very slow rate. The findings on the topic in the literature and during this study show the requirement for further technical investigations and economical analyses on two cases. The first case is to roast gold concentrates to produce magnetite rather than hematite followed by sulfur dioxide and thiocyanate leaching of magnetite containing calcines. The second case is to apply a magnetic concentration process to conventional roast-cyanidation calcine residues to produce a gold-rich magnetite concentrate that can be further treated with sulfur dioxide followed by thiocyanate leaching.For both cases, the best evaluation of the sulfur dioxide leach system in extracting residual gold from calcine leach residues will require a detailed economic analysis to find out the balance between the value of the gold recovered and the loss of revenue from acid production. There are a number of roasters that do not produce acid. The Sinclair Nickel Project, wholly owned by Xstrata Nickel Australasia (XNA), includes an underground mine, a concentrator, a village, an all-weather airstrip and associated mine infrastructure. The operation is located 70 km north of Leonora in the prospective and historically productive eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia. Xstrata Nickel has successfully developed the Sinclair deposit into a 350 kt/a operation since its discovery in November 2005, with contained nickel metal production to date in excess of 10 600 t, of which 5500 t is from the underground operation.The narrow, continuous, medium-grade Sinclair nickel sulfide deposit accessed by the Phoenix Decline has a shallow 15¦ - 20¦ plunge that is approximately 1000 m long down dip and open at depth to the north. The flat plunge and low-grade nature of the orebody presents challenges regarding the amount of horizontal waste development that can be economically excavated, which in turn affects ventilation, egress, mine services and diamond drilling.The mineralisation is hosted between an ultra mafic hanging wall and a basalt footwall and is being mined using a bottom up, sublevel open stoping method. The stopes are retreated to a central access, filling voids in the process with waste mullock where possible and using cemented mullock fill where end exposure is required. Tight filling the flat dipping hanging wall has proved to be challenging given the angle of repose for the waste mullock fill is steeper than the angle of the hanging wall.Reconciliations of mine performance against the original feasibility study show positive changes and operational optimisations enabling Sinclair to achieve its mining targets in a safe, sustainable and economic manner. As students progress further into a degree, the decision of vocation selection, and even more importantly û securing employment in a particular industry sector, can become quite daunting. However, with a little initiative, students can overcome these issues by not only researching what employment opportunities exist, but by applying for summer vacation employment. Undergraduate vacation employment, especially with a world-leading hydrometallurgy research organisation such as the Parker Centre, can dramatically alter a studentÆs perspective of particular industries and possibly even alter their selection of vocation pursuits upon graduating. Students can also use vacation employment to enhance their networking capabilities, technical skills and knowledge by dealing with challenging new topics such as sulfur dioxide leaching, which is also discussed in this article.

Coal water mixture (CWM) is a mix of finely ground coal with water and a small amount of chemicals. It is a new way of transporting and handling coal. CWM can be transported, stored and burned like fuel oil in steam generating boilers. It also has some environmental advantages over both oil and bulk coal. A group comprising Ube Industries Limited, Nissho Iwai Corporation (both from Japan) and Coal & Allied Industries Limited has been working in Japan and Australia since 1987 on a joint feasibility study into the production, transport and marketing of CWM from Australia to Japan. The group has been studying the development of a large-scale CWM plant on Kooragang Island at the mouth of the Hunter River at Newcastle, NSW. The project concepts and engineering plans for the CWM plant are well advanced and other studies related to the project are continuing.

Subsidence prediction methods can be divided into two basic types: empirical and analytical. Empirical methods are based largely on a combination of experience, intuition and observations from a large number of observed subsidence data. They are simple in their application, but they are not based on any principle of mechanics. Analytical methods are based on equivalent material modelling principles, where the ground surrounding the extraction is mathematically represented by idealised materials that deform according to the principles of continuum mechanics. Wide applicability and improved understanding are the principal advantages claimed for this approach. In NSW, significant progress has been achieved in the area of subsidence prediction during the last ten years. Empirical prediction curves are available in NSW for predicting the ground movement in the Southern and Newcastle Coalfields. A' comparison of subsidence values predicted from these curves with the actual monitored values indicates that the curves are adequate for use in conjunction with the existing damage assessment methods. Future research for improving the existing empirical prediction curves can only be justified if it is cost effective. There are several numerical models currently in use in NSW for predicting subsidence. The models do not appear to be superior in their ability to predict subsidence when compared with the empirical curves. the performance of these models will no doubt improve along with advances in defining strata properties and failure mechanisms.

Carbothermic reduction of sulphide minerals for achieving a selective separation of metallic species from complex minerals has been discussed by considering the prevailing oxygen potential during the course of reaction. Construction of univariant plots for the reduction of sulphides with carbon monoxide gas or carbon and in the presence of either lime or anhydrous calcium sulphate is the key feature of this work. The theoretical calculations for univariants in the Cu-Fe-S-O system indicated a preferential separation of metallic copper and iron by imposing a chemical potential. This is evident from a logarithmic plot of sulphur dioxide partial pressure against reciprocal temperature. The results are compared with empirical data for the reduction equilibrium. The reduction behaviour of the constituent sulphides are also discussed together with the experimental results and theoretically predicted phase stability diagrams.

Accurate measurements of the moisture content of iron ore have increasing importance in modern mining operations. Knowledge of the moisture content allows process control actions to be carried out to ensure that the moisture is within prescribed limits, whether this is ensuring sufficient moisture to be above the dust extinction limit or that the moisture level is below the transportable moisture limit for sea shipments. Additionally, controlling moisture within desired limits can allow for greater throughput of iron ore by limiting the amount of water transported. There are a range of options available for operators wishing to obtain moisture data, though there are few demonstrated and proven devices that are able to provide real-time analysis of the full bed-depth of material. Scantech’s through-belt moisture systems are able to accurately analyse the full bed-depth of conveyed iron ore in real time using its unique microwave transmission technology, providing valuable data for operators. Recent advances in these systems have overcome errors associated with the highly attenuating nature of iron ore, particularly for large conveyor belts and deep ore. Furthermore, analysis of different ore mineralogy and its effect on the accuracy of moisture analysis has been examined and quantified. This paper discusses some of these recent results, demonstrating achievable accuracies in spite of changing ore mineralogy. In mining industries, materials handling costs represent a significant component of the operational cost. A variety of methods have been applied in surface mine equipment selection in order to select the suitable loading system with the lowest loading operation cost. These are queuing theory, bunching theory, linear programming and genetic algorithm. Among them, genetic algorithm is a simple method and applied for preliminary selection of the loading system. In this study, gathering information from anomaly No 2 of Gol-e-Gohar iron mine of Iran, loading system (number and its capacity) has been optimised by genetic algorithm. The study results showed that two shovels 8.25 m3 are required for the removal of 60 million tonnes of overburden. After removal overburden, these two shovels contribute to the extraction of 42 million tonnes of ore with a stripping ratio of 1:1.

Much practical experience has been gathered in the last 30 years of application of high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) integrated with ball milling in size reduction of fine iron ore concentrates. The company Vale S.A, in Complexo de Tubarão (Brazil), was one of the pioneers applying the technology prior to pelletisation with an outstanding size reduction energy efficiency in the circuit and a significant increment in the specific surface area of the product. Recent studies by the authors demonstrated benefits of modelling and simulation to improve the performance of HPGRs in this particular application, with the model being able to describe HPGR performance under different operating conditions and under variations of feed size distribution. Despite these important advances, this modelling approach has only been used offline and under steady-state conditions. The present work applies the modified Torres and Casali model proposed by the authors in pseudodynamic simulations. The ability of the model to predict the characteristics of the product in real-time is evaluated using data available online for the pellet feed preparation circuit. Results demonstrated the model capabilities to map the physical operation and give a realistic representation of the process. Additionally, the model is demonstrated to be able to support the pellet feed production by providing extended real-time information of the process, making it a useful tool for improvement of the operational strategies and process stability.

The attachment of a spherical particle to a bubble is theoretically investigated under the condition of a mixed sorption coating of a collector. It is shown that the attachment is determined primarily by the hydrodynamic factor involving the displacement of liquid from the gap between a bubble and a particle. The dependence of the attachment on the state of the surface of particle (sorption coating) is due to a change in the boundary conditions on the interface with water both in the case of surfactant chemical sorption and in that of the physical adsorption of oil. It is demonstrated that at large distances the thinning of a interlayer is facilitated by a physically sorbed collector, while near the bubble this is done by a chemically sorbed one.

The Caval Ridge Mine is an open cut coalmine and located within the Bowen Basin region in Central Queensland, and commenced mining and processing operations in 2014. A number of geotechnical challenges for managing dragline bench and lowwall stabilities have been encountered in both southern and northern pits over the years. Southern Pits contain steep seam dips of up to 15° (27 per cent) whilst the northern pits also have shears below pit floors. Geotechnical guidelines to manage the risk of dragline bench failure and lowwall instability have been developed and improved since these geotechnical challenges were identified. The dragline guidelines include dragline tub offset distances from the 60° Line (SDL) or buttressing thickness for different seam dips greater than or equal to 8°. The low wall stabilisation guideline established floor disruption widths and depths depending on seam dips and presence of floor shears to known depths of up to 3 m. As mining operations advance, lowwalls have remained stable until floor disruptions were fired, then returned to stable soon after the shot. The maximum distance of lowwall cracking with blasting has been as far back as the second spoil peak (the prestrip truck dumps construction limit). These failures need to be eliminated to allow the operational flexibility and haulage benefit of constructing the prestrip truck dumps behind the first spoil peak, while maintaining no risk to personnel or equipment. The floor shear depth was verified by collaborating with the exploration teams and taking advantage of the already planned 8-inch coal quality core holes, drilling them an extra 5–10 m past the coal seam floor and locating the shear presence. With this continuous improvement effort, no lowwall failures have occurred during floor disruption firing from the second strip after the new floor disruption depth guidance have been applied. This paper documents the processes for developing these geotechnical guidelines, operational implementation, and outcomes. Operational applications over the years confirmed that these guidelines have effectively managed the dragline bench and lowwall failure risks related with the steep seam dips and floor shears in this open cut coalmine.

Modem open cut and underground mining in the tropics inevitably expose partially weathered and unweathered rocks to oxygen and water, leading to weathering and the release of solutes and often acidity as well. Historical monitoring data can demonstrate these phenomena. Three case studies from open cut mines in the north of the Northern Territory illustrate the deterioration in quality of pond water receiving drainage from waste rock dumps. The potential for deterioration of water quality was not recognised in many mine Environmental Impact Statements prepared and accepted in the 1980s. The examples documented indicate the importance of adequately planning for this near inevitable process. Retrofitting a mine water management system to 'no' or minimal release can be very difficult and expensive, and may not be feasible, leading to downstream pollution. The characterisation of acid and solute production potential of ore and waste rock, and improved dumping strategies and water management are very important to minimise the environmental impact of mining in the tropics.

It is understood that rocks do not instantaneously transport along a grinding mill and are consequently not perfectly mixed, but this is conveniently overlooked in mill modelling. A lack of understanding of the transport phenomenon and the difficulty of modelling realistic transport in a complex tumbling system, contribute to this. Visual observation of segregation in AG and SAG mills and measured lag time of mill response to changes in feed provide evidence of the influence of axial transport within mills. Incorporating this lag in dynamic models should underpin dynamic simulation of milling circuits for design and for model-based control. Limitations and errors in predicting the influence of increased power via mill length versus diameter, inability to predict pebble production, and a lack of the differential in residence time across rock sizes and competences, all contribute to inadequate design prediction that can be especially acute for large Autogenous mills. Examples of dramatically under – and overloaded pebble regrind circuits and the inability to predict pebble load in AG milling discouraging the application of this energy-efficient option, point to the need for predictive modelling of breakage by competence linked to transport through and out of mills. Incorporating progress in granular flow and mixing, coupled to computational advances enable models to be based on complex breakage and transport models at high spatial resolution. This allows mechanistic models to simulate thousands of times faster than real time, opening the door to more accurate mill design, including dynamics in process simulation and to live simulation for process control – all with advanced mechanistic models. The value of grasping this opportunity is not easily refuted.

In flotation cells, especially in large flotation units, froth management is a crucial variable that should be considered during the design phase or optimised to improve the performance of existing flotation circuits. This paper presents a simulation evaluation of the effect of launder design on the metallurgical performance of an industrial flotation circuit consisting of five TankCell® e630 (630 m3 ) cells in a Cu rougher duty. This analysis was carried out using a new industrial simulator, which was built on a wide database collected from many industrial concentrators. This tool is currently incorporated into HSC Chemistry® software and allows evaluation of the effect of launder design on mineral froth recovery, water recovery, entrainment, and other variables to be quantified. The industrial flotation circuit was evaluated under different launder design scenarios, considering an actual flotation circuit that includes TankCell® e630 cells for calibration and as a reference (baseline). Firstly, two different designs were evaluated in the full circuit: a standard launder design and a new launder technology. It was found that the new launder technology enabled improvement of the mineral recovery along the circuit, mainly for coarse particles, due to the improvement in froth mineral recovery. Next, the partial upgrade of the launder design along the circuit was analysed. Thus, the new launder technology was evaluated in the first and the last two cells of the bank. The results showed that upgrading the launders in different cells along the circuit delivered an increase in the final recovery with respect to the baseline, with a partial impact on the concentrate grade. However, these changes are less than those when evaluating the full upgrade scenario. A partial launder upgrade either in the first or last two cells of the bank showed similar final recoveries, but the latter enabled a slightly higher concentrate grade (about 1 per cent higher) to be achieved. Finally, the evaluation of launder design using the industrial simulator made it possible to estimate its effect on variables that are not commonly obtained from plant surveys, including froth recovery per particle size, collection recovery per particle size and liberation, gangue entrainment and bubble loading grade.

Geometallurgy is not a mechanism designed to replace current geological and metallurgical deposit characterisation but an added component required to understand orebody variability. Current geological characterisation approaches focus on understanding deposit genesis aimed at identifying new mineralised regions and metallurgical characterisation determines parameters required for engineering design of processing plants. Geometallurgical integration has the task of drawing on aspects of each stream to enable spatial mapping of performance indices across a deposit. It is a complimentary activity to current practice and adds a new dimension to orebody knowledge. Although the notion of conducting an integrated geological and metallurgical analysis is not a new concept, limited publications exist in the field proposing integrated methods, with several technical issues existing in current geometallurgical integration approaches. An iterative method drawing on existing geological and metallurgical characterisation and new measurement tools and inputs is proposed. The integrated method comprises of discrete components dynamically linked together through iterative feedback loops with each component having a specific purpose achieved by applying a range of data acquisition technologies and statistical tests. The key outcomes of the method are:overcoming the lack of optimised geometallurgical domains relevant to processing performance,development of a rigorous approach to identifying parameters controlling processability,improved protocols for relevant metallurgical test data and sample selection, andability to generate greater data support to enable rigorous geostatistical modelling of geometallurgical attributes. This paper outlines the integrated mapping and modelling method developed and draws on multiple data acquisition technologies applied within the AMIRA P843 GeMIII Project.

"Geometallurgy aims to improve resource efficiency by creating a spatial model of an orebody in order to forecast ore processing behaviour. This enables calculation of the economic value of each ore block and the use of this information for production optimisation and hence an improved economic return. Modelling uses different approaches to link geological information with mineral processing: traditional approach uses chemical elements; proxy approach – small-scale geometallurgical tests; and mineralogical approach – minerals.A geometallurgical model is obtained during execution of a geometallurgical program encompassing the entire value chain of ore processing. Available methods for establishing a geometallurgical model are in many cases limited and not yet comprehensively validated. Some of the limitations include: sampling density, assaying methods and quality, forecast accuracy block model content, geostatistical solutions for non-additive components, blending and assessment of positive impact of geometallurgy on the project. Synthetic ore models combined with process simulations and production scheduling, based on strong case studies, present a viable way to address these shortcomings. Such synthetic ore models will have realistic elemental and mineral distribution, textural attributes and 3D variability for input into the design of an appropriate geometallurgical program.A synthetic orebody was created for an apatite-bearing iron deposit. Variability in modal mineralogy was described by geostatistical parameters combined by a set of linear and trigonometric functions. The generated synthetic deposit model was used to develop a mine production plan to generate a simulated process feed. The process feed had detailed information required for beneficiation process simulation: modal mineralogy, chemical composition of minerals, grain size and specific gravity. The synthetic system was used to measure benefits that a geometallurgical program developed for real cases could provide, compared to production where only head grade is optimised. This paper describes MIM's experience in arranging and executing project financings for coal projects at Oaky Creek and Newlands and Collinsville and the port facility of Abbot Point.The financings had their origins in the late 1970's and culminated with the opening of these projects during 1983 and 1984.MIM's financing developments therefore span an important period in the development of resource projects in Australia.Resources projects have been growing in both scale and complexity of financing requirements.

The extractive phase of broad-scale mining can have major impacts on landscapes and associated ecosystems. Post-mining ecological rehabilitation typically starts with reconstructing topography. A fairly common industry practice has been to use landform elements such as plateaus, terraces, and gentle slopes for stabilisation purposes. However, this approach can lead to the generation of fairly uniform landforms that do not necessarily reflect natural ecosystems. Previous research in undisturbed and agricultural landscapes shows that ecological attributes and diversity in microclimates is positively correlated with landform heterogeneity. An objective of this study was to investigate if those findings are still valid in post-mining rehabilitating landscapes on North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia. We investigated the relationship between landform heterogeneity and status of ecological recovery. The landform heterogeneity is measured through variance in three landform characteristics (relief, slope, aspect) using remote-sensing data and the status of ecological recovery is represented by ecological indicators measured through field surveys. The results indicate strong correlations between landform heterogeneity indices and native vegetation species richness with sensitivity to the spatial scale of investigation. It is recognised that climate, substrate and rehabilitation practices act as primary drivers of rehabilitation success. However, the results indicate that, in some examples, landform heterogeneity (heterogeneity in relief and slope angles) contributes up to 30 to 50?per?cent of the variance in native vegetation species richness. While the primary drivers of ecological recovery are difficult to control over extensive areas and extended time periods, landform heterogeneity provides a tool to indirectly control the micro-environmental parameters to improve ecological recovery. Reducing the uncertainties in the choice of ecological and landform indices and the degree of landform heterogeneity suitable for particular rehabilitating landscapes would be site specific. The introduction of desired landform heterogeneity may provide a very effective tool for significant improvement in ecological rehabilitation across broad-scale post-mine landscapes, an outcome of benefit to industry, government and local communities.CITATION:Datar, A and Mulligan,?D,?2014. "The Efemçukuru underground mine in western Turkey is an intermediate sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit. The bulk of the mineral resources and all of the mineral reserves lie within the Kestanebeleni (KB) vein system. This system comprises four spatially-distinct mineralised zones: the south ore shoot (SOS), the middle ore shoot (MOS), the north ore shoot (NOS) and the KB north-west ore shoot. Production currently occurs only in the SOS, MOS and NOS zones. The gold mineralisation is very fine grained and occurs as free grains in quartz and carbonate, and as inclusions in sulfide minerals. Gold is recovered as part of a sulfide concentrate by flotation methods. Though hosted in the KB vein, the gold mineralisation is not evenly distributed within the veins. Definition of its occurrence is totally dependent on diamond drilling.Diamond drilling at Efemçukuru is done with its own equipment and staff, all managed by the mine geology group. The process over the mine’s six year production history incorporates continual improvement with an innovative approach by focusing on the following: drill team organisation career development and training product research and effective equipment management cost reduction planning and scheduling of development for drill stations.Over 40 000 metres of mostly BQ size core are drilled annually by three drill rigs at a cost approaching US$35/m.The planning and execution of the drilling pattern depends on the configuration of the ore shoot and the planned mining method. Ore extraction is mainly by drift and fill mining augmented by about 15 per cent longhole stoping. The drilling of a specific area is scheduled to be finished 3 to 8 months prior to mining.
