Testing of in situ seals in underground coal mines is critical to determine seal integrity and to provide safe working conditions. In the wake of the 2006 Sago Mine explosion, the United States of America (USA) promulgated the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act (USDOL, 2006) which required mines to install 827 kPa (120 psi) rated seals or monitor and maintain the atmosphere behind existing 345 kPa (50 psi) seals. The purpose of developing the regulations was to prevent the breaching of seals in the event of an explosion in the sealed area.While seal design and construction is carefully regulated in practice, the construction of seals is difficult to monitor, as many are constructed under various mine conditions and the methods rely on prescribed placement of the seal material. Further examination of installed seals is limited to two-dimensional visual inspection and atmospheric and convergence measuring devices. These methods do not accurately reflect the integrity of the seal and cannot detect changes, deterioration, or defects within the seal.If detection of defects, deterioration and damage is not possible, unexpected communication between the active and sealed areas may result. Additionally, the ability of the seal to withstand explosions may be compromised. Non-destructive testing (NDT) of underground mine seals is necessary to investigate if the seal properties have been altered and if the seal remains functional as a barrier between active areas and sealed areas of the mine. This report will differ slightly from the traditional scientific and technical discussions given at this type of conference. It will focus on the personal experiences and choices that I undertook when deciding on my graduate position and location after completing university studies. Throughout the duration of my course I had experience in both fly-in, fly-out operations in the Pilbara and residential operations in the West Australian Goldfields. These experiences, though limited, allowed me to explore the two different methods and their pros and cons, and consequently to make my choice for graduate employment. Throughout the duration of my degree I believed it was important to gain a basic understanding of the two methods, focusing on lifestyle and personal interactions. The decision that a residential site suited my personality and lifestyle then allowed me to refine my job applications to a more specific list of mine sites and companies, resulting in a residential position with BHP Billiton at their Iron Ore operations in the Pilbara, Western Australia.

The Morobe Goldfield in Papua New Guinea has produced in excess of 120 tonnes of gold from predominantly alluvial sources. Hardrock gold has been mined historically at Wau (23t) and Edie Creek (40 and geological resources have been established at Hidden Valley (780, Kerimenge (360 and Hamata (30t). Numerous prospects have also been identified within the goldfield. Primary gold mineralisation is related to intrusion of dacitic to andesitic Edie Porphyry (2.4 to 3.8 Ma), often with associated diatremes, which have intruded along major regional structures. A full spectrum of deposit styles from proximal (mesothermal) to distal (epithermal) to the porphyry source is recognised. The transition between the proximal and distal styles is recognised both between deposits and within an individual deposit. The deposit styles should be termed porphyry related gold mineralisation rather than given the generic epithermal and mesothermal labels.

The phase equilibria in the Al2O3–TiOx system were investigated in wide ranges of temperature and oxygen partial pressure: 1300~1600°C and 10-16.6~10-8 atm, respectively. The equilibrium phases and their compositions were identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), respectively. Most noticeably, a wide range of pseudobrookite solid solution was found in equilibrium with almost pure alumina. At each temperature, the cationic ratio expressed as RTi = nTi/(nAl + nTi)) of the pseudobrookite solid solution showed a noteworthy dependency on the oxygen partial pressure. This resulted in the formation of a broad range of pseudobrookite solid solutions, ranging from Al2TiO5 (RTi = 1/3) to Ti3O5 (RTi = 1.0). Complete miscibility within the pseudobrookite solid solution was observed at 1600°C, with only a minor miscibility gap becoming evident below 1500°C. Based on the results obtained in the present study, the behaviours of Al2TiO5 pseudobrookite have implications in two key domains: (1) understanding changes in the physical properties of the materials, and (2) elucidating the evolution of Al–Ti complex oxide inclusions in liquid steel which can deteriorate the steel cleanliness.

The iron ore deposits in India are rich in iron content but usually contains high alumina and silica. The current industrial practice results three products namely lump, fines and slimes. The lump and fines with or without beneficiation are directly fed to the blast furnace and sintering plant respectively while the super fines or slimes are presently discarded as tailings. Around eight million tonnes of iron ore slimes estimated as being 15 - 20 per cent by weight of run of mine ore containing ~48 - 62 per cent Fe, is discarded every year causing huge loss to the Indian iron ore industry. In addition, these slimes stored in massive tailing ponds pose enormous environmental and ecological problems. Extensive investigations have been carried out on three iron ore slimes generated at Barsua, Bolani and Meghahatuburu iron ore mines of India. The studies include physical, chemical, mineralogical characterisation and beneficiation studies adopting conventional hydroclyclone and wet high intensity magnetic separator. The characterisation studies have indicated that most of the gangue minerals are accumulated in finer fractions. The studies on hydrocyclone and magnetic separation had indicated that an iron concentrate of 61 - 65 per cent Fe could be obtained by recovering 59 - 78 per cent of the iron values present in the slimes. Depending on the nature of the slimes the alumina and silica levels have been brought down to 2.5 and 1.0 per cent respectively. The effects of different operating and design variables along with detailed characterisation studies have been highlighted.

Intensive exploration of the Archaean ultra mafic sequence bordering the Kambalda dome has resulted in the discovery of at least ten dis- tinct areas of nickel sulphide mineralisation subsequent to the initial drill intersection in January, 1966. Sulphide ore reserves to June 30, 1972 were 19.36 million tonnes at 3.3% nickel after mining of 3.0 million tonnes at 3:7%,nickel since production commenced in March, 1967. About 75% of contained nickel metal reserves occur in sulphide concentrations located at the base of the-ultramafic sequence, in contact with underlying meta-tholeiitic basalt. The remaining reserve occurs in concentrations of sulphides within the ultramafic sequence, usually within 100 metres of the underlying contact and typically in proximity to contact mineralisation. These hanging wall orebodies are smaller, contain significantly lower con- centrations of sulphide, and generally exhibit higher Ni:S ratios than underlying contact ore- bodies. The majority of contact sulphides concentr- ations form narrow, elongate, north north-west trending bodies, closely coincident with fault bounded depressions in the contact. The Metropolitan Water Supply, Sewerage and Drainage Board, Perth, has recently con- structed two major sewerage tunnels in the metropolitan area and a further one is under construction. These tunnels were constructed in sand, sandstone and limestone. The Tamala Limestone is a Pleistocene calcareous dune sand which now varies in com position from loose sand to cemented rock. Investigation techniques included surface mapping, auger and diamond core drilling, seismic refraction geophysics and mechanical testing. The variable nature of the ground caused difficulties in all aspects of the investigation, particularly in core recovery and seismic work. The Beenyup Tunnel, 2.25m in diameter and 3440m long was excavated with a Dosco TBM 1800 machine and shield with precast concrete Charcon Universal bolted segment lining. The Burns Beach Sewer Tunnel, 1.27m in diameter and 860m long was hand excavated with precast reinforced concrete lining pipes jacked continuously behind an excavation

Zinifex Rosebery Mine is a lead-zinc underground mining operation located at the base of Mount Black, on the West Coast of Tasmania. Mining activities at the Rosebery Mine have been undertaken for over 100 years, and it has been operating in its current form for over 60 years. A large surface and underground exploration drilling program over the last 18 months has increased the mineÆs expected mine life from five to 12 years, with expectations that over the next 18 months as the program continues this will swell to 20 plus years. Zinifex Ltd secured Rosebery Mine in April 2004 and commissioned a detailed life-of-mine (LOM) study on all aspects of the operation. One of the most detailed sections of this report was on the state of the current ventilation system. It was identified in this report that for mining at the current depth of approximately 1100 m to continue a minimum 30 per cent increase in ventilation quantity was essential, as well as a likely requirement for a refrigerant cooling plant for each of the two deepest panels, the K and P lenses. It was identified that Zinifex did not have personnel with the expertise in underground refrigeration to manage and implement a project of this nature. A second report was commissioned with Bluhm Burton Engineering (BBE), a South African firm specialising in both surface and underground large-scale refrigeration plants. BBE concluded that two refrigeration plants were required to provide the necessary cooling power in the lower sections of the mine. In 2005, with BBE as technical consultants, Zinifex Rosebery Mine embarked on a project to commission two underground refrigeration units capable of lowering the wet bulb temperature at the decline face by four degrees centigrade. This paper is intended to give the reader an overview of: Rosebery Mine operations,Rosebery underground refrigeration project,technical difficulties associated with implementing an underground refrigeration system, andkey learnings to date.

Oxidation of pyrite and other metal sulfides is accelerated by the activity of acidophilic iron- and sulfur-oxidising microorganisms. The ideal biocide for controlling biocatalysed acid rock drainage (ARD) would be inexpensive, inhibitory toward sulfide-oxidising bacteria at low concentrations, relatively non-toxic toward non-target organisms, degradable in the environment outside the zone of application, stable and long-lived in the impacted environment, sufficiently mobile to penetrate into piles of waste rock or tailings, and effective regardless of the metal sulfides present. A potent agent for combating ARD that fits these criteria is the thiocyanate anion (SCN-). The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of thiocyanate in controlling or preventing ARD within several types of sulfidic waste rock and tailings. Results were evaluated within a context encompassing process water and solids management strategies employed at different precious and base metal mines. Sulfidic rock was treated with solutions of potassium thiocyanate and subjected to accelerated weathering tests in lab-scale humidity cells, trays, and columns. Certain tests also utilised solid phase copper thiocyanate (CuSCN) to evaluate a ærelease on demandÆ strategy. Leach solutions were analysed for parameters indicative of ARD including pH, redox potential, conductivity, acidity, sulfate, iron, and certain heavy metals. Two larger scale field tests were also initiated by personnel at separate mines using, in the first case, ore containing a pyritic component in large columns and, in the second case, waste rock containing base metal sulfides in lined pits. Humidity cell tests showed low concentrations of thiocyanate solution applied to pyritic waste rock could reduce ARD formation by 90 per cent or more compared to untreated controls, with the residual release of ARD components (eg sulfate, Fe, acidity) probably reflective of strictly chemical oxidation of the sulfides by molecular oxygen. Thiocyanate applied at a concentration of 22 mg/kg to waste rock from a base metal mining operation in large laboratory scale columns reduced acidity and sulfate release by 75 per cent to 80 per cent compared to untreated controls. This extent of reduction in ARD may not meet discharge water quality criteria, but has the potential to significantly reduce lime consumption and sludge production in a conventional neutralisation facility. The use of a solid-phase metal thiocyanate compound (CuSCN) at a dosage of 194 mg/kg pyritic ore resulted in the following per cent reductions in leach solution parameters in comparison to controls: sulfate (78 per cent), acidity (93 per cent), dissolved Fe (99.4 per cent), and dissolved arsenic (99.9 per cent). This compound has the further advantage of being relatively stable until needed, dissolving only in the presence of an acidic and oxidising ARD solution. If this line of investigation progresses favorably, it offers the possibility of an ARD prevention technique that may be applicable in some settings. Mine-site pilot scale tests with pyritic ore resulted in reductions in sulfate (56 per cent) and Fe, As (66 - 68 per cent). In sum, thiocyanate at relatively low concentrations dramatically reduced ARD from sulfidic rock in a simulated heap. The pilot test using waste rock containing base metal sulfides has begun only recently. A preliminary process design and cost estimate was made for fullscale application of thiocyanate to waste rock at a hypothetical gold mining operation producing 5000 tpd of ore and 10 000 tpd of sulfide containing waste rock. The combined capital and operating costs for the full-scale thiocyanate application facility were about $US 0.25/tonne of waste rock and $US 0.50/tonne of ore. Although thiocyanate is readily available commercially, it also occurs in process solutions associated with certain types of mining processes. Such solutions after selective treatment might be recycled to sulfidic waste rock or tailings, rather than being treated for thiocyanate degradation.

Uncertainty and debate currently pervade the mining industry in New Zealand. The operational uncertainties, whether external (eg gold prices, the exchange rate), or internal (eg coal expansion difficulties), are large. In addition, many wider factors which influence mining are in a state of flux. State Coal Mines, the operating branch of the Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy I may be made a state corporation, with the remaining Mines Division functions being revamped. The agencies administering environmental legislation are to be restructured. Mining legislation amendments have been proposed and then dropped, and the area is now to be reviewed (The Press, 31 July 1985). Some mining licences have been withdrawn, and become the subject of heated debate in the community (The Press, 19 July 1985, and subsequent letters to the editor).

A re-evaluation of the Hampton Boulder prospect in the early eighties resulted in a decision to proceed with mine development in December 1985. A 500 000 tpa gold treatment plant was commissioned in December 1986. The treatment facility was expanded to 1 600 000 tpa in July 1988. A tailings treatment plant to improve recoveries from harder gold bearing sulphide ores was built in December 1990. The development of an underground mine in 1991 meant that a source of sand for backfill was required. A sands plant to fulfil this requirement was commissioned during November 1991.As of June 1992 a total of 7 710 487 tonnes of ore have been treated through the New Celebration gold plant. Total gold production from inception of the new mine until June 1992 is 545 470 ounces obtained at an average recovery of 90.1 per cent from an average gold head grade of 2.4 g/t. Economic recovery of gold from complex gold ores, including poly-metallic deposits, is impacted by the presence of cyanide-soluble base metals. These base metals can create both a metallurgical challenge plus waste handling and disposal challenges. Base metals such as Cu and Zn compete for the cyanide reagent and often increase the total cyanide consumption to the point of making precious metals recovery uneconomic. In addition, the accumulation of base metals in cyanide solutions represent a challenge for cyanide detoxification and waste water treatment as these metals report to waste sludge. Such sludge requires safe handling and disposal, with possible long-term liabilities.Base metal interference can be removed with sulfidisation-acidification-recycling-thickening (SART) process technology. SART liberates the base metal from the cyanide complex and precipitates the metal as an insoluble sulfide product that can be recovered as a commercial grade concentrate. With the base metal precipitated, the cyanide can be regenerated as free cyanide and recycled to the gold extraction circuit.BioteQ completed laboratory testing for two projects, one employing cyanide leaching of copper-gold sulfide flotation concentrate and one employing a Merrill Crowe process, to determine the effectiveness of SART to remove and recover Cu and Zn in high-grade sulfide concentrates and to reduce the impact of cyanide-soluble metals on gold recovery and cyanide consumption. Although we have access to a wide range of sophisticated process design and improvement tools in combination with a significant range of case studies, the mineral resource industry still manages to be plagued by the negative publicity surrounding operating plant failures because they were neither smart nor safe, together with proposed projects that fail at the first or second hurdle. The general public and the finance industry are generally totally uniformed about projects that ramp-up to name plate capacity on time and on budget and even more so when ahead of schedule and under budget. As the saying goes, good news does not cut the mustard.The following is a summary of the author’s sometimes jaundiced view about why metallurgical plants do not live up to their technical and commercial expectations. In no way should the summary be construed as a negative reflection on the skills of the metallurgical profession. Rather, it is to be taken as a positive acknowledgement of those skills and is intended to highlight some of the major considerations that need to be assessed as a potential project transforms into a sustainable technical and commercial reality.While a considerable portion of the summary is directed at developing hydrometallurgical flowsheets, the general principles are equally important to all aspects of extractive metallurgy.For convenience, the summary covers the following five basic discussion points – project, people, process, patents and politicians.

Pyrite, chalcopyrite and mixed sulfide samples, with and without quartz (5 wt per cent S), were subjected to column leaching to mimic natural weathering (cyclic wetting and drying). The pH and SO4 2- concentration of the column effluent was measured over a period of 78 weeks. The pH of the pyrite-only containing column rapidly decreased and remained under pH 4 after 12 weeks of leaching. The pH calculated assuming a 2:1 ratio of H + generation and SO4 2- release was slightly lower than that measured. However, a reduced H + to SO4 2- ratio of 1:1 is predicted if the release of aqueous Fe 2+ is assumed rather than the formation of Fe(OH)3. The pH of all columns containing only chalcopyrite or a 1:1 mole ratio of chalcopyrite and pyrite remained at or above pH 5 for the duration of the leach even though significant SO4 2- was released. One column containing the same initial surface area of pyrite and chalcopyrite but only approximately 0.10 the mole fraction of S as chalcopyrite maintained a pH of greater than five for the first 56 weeks of leaching and showed sporadic acid production thereafter. It is well established that oxidation of chalcopyrite results in a surface layer of polysulfide material. It is the formation of polysulfide that neutralises the acid produced on S oxidation through to SO4 2-. Hence where polysulfide formation occurs extensively on chalcopyrite the resulting solution pH decrease will be less than that based on SO4 2- production. The oxidation rate of sulfide minerals increases with decreasing pH and hence acid formation via sulfide oxidation to SO4 2- causes the subsequent oxidation rate to increase. The addition of calcite (CaCO3)to a pyrite column not only neutralises the acid formed but also decreases the rate of release of sulfate to solution by a factor of approximately 30. This is also the case where chalcopyrite is present mixed with pyrite. The rate of release of sulfate from the mixed sulfide mineral columns (after the initial release of the sulfate already present) was between one-fifth and one-tenth that in the absence of chalcopyrite.

A mineral exploration manager's prime function is to provide a frame- work within which new mine production can be achieved. As part of this framework, the manager should know his employerb future requirements, and should direct exploration towards those particular mineral commodities which indicate satisfactory growth in consumption and price. Selection of these commodities can be assisted by studies of world reserves, and long term trends in price and consumption. Exploration planning is most efficient with an assured and reasonably uniform supply of funds.

Segnit's article puts forward the views that the rocks associated with the Broken Hill lode are simply highly metamorphosed sediments, tbat metasomatism on a large scale was not an important factor at Broken Hill and that the rocks and lode were contemporaneously metamorphosed.In particular, the garnet quartzite, the most abundant rock in the limited section of the mine examined by Segnit, is described by him as a simple, metamorphosed manganiferous sediment.These views, while consonant with those of H. F. King (1958), are drastically opposed to those of myself and others e.g. Gustafson et al. (1950, p. 1383) who state that the most extensive hydrothermal alteration in the district is in and close to the zinc lodes in the Zinc Corporation and New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. mines. Segnit's conclusions conflict with 1. the absence of any manganiferous sediment in the Broken Hill district except in close proximity to the lode,2. the clear cut metasomatism of the dolerite dykes which indicates that the ore is younger than the dykes and therefore post-metamorphism, and 3. the petrofabric study of den Tex (1958) which provided independent evidence that the ore in its present form post-dates all events of a diastrophic nature in the area.The original sediments of the district were mudstones and calcareous sandstones with 2 to 5 per cent CaO. Brazilian banded iron formation (BIF), known as ‘itabirite’, is the main host rock for iron ore in the Iron Quadrangle mines, Brazil. Their geneses are controversial and it is agreed that diagenetic, metamorphic and tectonic events, as well as weathering processes, were responsible for the iron concentration. In addition, it is understood that weathering processes are mainly responsible for reducing the original high intact rock strength, and for generating deep weathered profiles with low strength rocks commonly observed in Vale’s mines.A considerable amount of work has been done to correlate the macro and micro aspects of the itabirites as physical, chemical and geotechnical characteristics that directly or indirectly affect the intact rock strength; however, it is not yet clearly understood what effects the weathering processes have on the strength reduction of these rocks and its associated impact on pit slope stability. This forms a key focus of the lead author’s current research work.This paper presents a review of the geological, geotechnical and weathering characteristics of the itabirites, and early results for the evaluations of fresh itabirites from the PhD thesis research being undertaken by the authors at the Australian Centre for Geomechanics, School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering, The University of Western Australia, sponsored by Vale SA.The results showed that to evaluate the density and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) correlation, not only the porosity but also the geological features should be considered, as they are responsible for data dispersion; however, the presented data suggested a trend that provides the confidence to develop advanced studies and a data population increment to establish proper correlations to support a reliable UCS method.CITATION:Costa, T A V, Dight, P M, Mercer, K and Marques, E A G, 2015. Scale build-up in titanium palladium alloy spent electrolyte heat exchangers in the residue treatment plant commissioned at Risdon, Tasmania in 1971 was shown to be a mixture of manganese dioxide and anhydrite (CaSO4). The manganese dioxide was deposited as a result of thermal decomposition of permanganate ions present in the spent electrolyte. It was shown that deposition of manganese dioxide and associated anhydrite scale could be prevented by prior reduction of permanganate ions to the manganous (Mn++) state by the addition of ferrous ions. In the plant this was conveniently accomplished by injecting into the inlet line to the heat exchangers sufficient zinc plant solution containing ferrous sulfate to decolourise the spent electrolyte. This action prevented deposition of such scale for another 21 years, until the heaters were finally decommissioned in March 1992. Measurements indicated that addition of the reducing solution lowered the anodic potential of the titanium alloy by 200 - 300 mV (depending on the solution resistance), but that it was still +300 to 400 mV with respect to a standard calomel electrode. It was shown that, if necessary, a small impressed current could be applied to provide anodic protection. Before scale deposition was overcome by the addition of ferrous sulfate solution, badly scaled heat exchangers were cleaned by recirculating a solution of hydrogen peroxide in spent electrolyte or dilute aqueous sulfuric acid, after laboratory testing of a variety of possible solvents for the scale. Corrosion tests indicated that attack on the titanium alloy by the acidic peroxide cleaning solution was insignificant.

The Australian mining industry is at an interesting stage in its development. Of the large number of mining companies in Australia, some are still solely domestic in their focus. others have made their first tentative forays offshore, and others are global players of significance in the world industry. It is not long ago that the entire industry was almost exclusively domestic in its focus. Very few companies before the early 1980s had ventured offshore, and those that did so were considered quite risque. The initial moves were made mainly by large companies who could afford to lose the funds expended in getting started in a range of offshore locations.
