The formation of banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted high-grade iron ore deposits in the Hamersley Province, Australia has been debated for decades. Although a structural control on their formation is widely accepted, only the roles of large-scale structures (ie faults and folds) formed by brittle and ductile deformation have been considered to date. However, the deformation of multilayered sequences in the Hamersley Province (ie the Mount Bruce Supergroup), with their contrasting rheological behaviours, creates challenges for understanding the complex structural framework at regional to deposit scales, including the significance for mineralisation and orebody location.Our approach to understanding these complex relationships is based on an established principle of structural geology, which is to extrapolate microscale structures to deposit-scale structures and vice versa, supported by state-of-the-art 3D modelling techniques. Complexly deformed hand samples associated with the Mount Tom Price iron ore deposit (Hamersley Province, operated by Rio Tinto Ltd) have been analysed and visualised with 3D explicit (Move™, Midland Valley Ltd) and implicit modelling software packages (Leapfrog™, AranzGeo Ltd) and supported by microstructural investigations (optical and X-ray microscopy) and fieldwork.Our study shows that the deformation of BIFs in the central Hamersley Province is controlled by microscale chemical processes (ie dissolution precipitation creep) due to rheological differences between iron oxide and chert layers, contrasting fluid flow properties and layer thickness variations. These processes account for the removal of vast amounts of silica, its transportation by diffusion in the presence of a fluid and reprecipitation at low-pressure sites. Problems of the creation of an automated cartographic system for environmental condition estimation and forecasting in mining region are discussed in this paper. The Geographic Information System (GIS) ARC/INFO is offered as the platform for such a system. A breadboard model of the system was tested on the example of Kemerovo province (Kuznetsk coal basin), the most ecologically impacted mining region of Russia. As a result parameters of territorial distribution of integrated adverse environmental impact of the industrial enterprises are reviewed. Administrative regions of Kemerovo province were rated according to a degree of environmental pollution. Further, specific weight of various industries in pollution of region is determined.

The'treatment of the South Alligator valley uranium ores passed through three phases dictated by economic circumstances during the years 1956- 640 In the first phase high grade ores were treated by hand sorting and wet gravity separation for recovery of high grade concentrate to meet a United States Atomic Energy Commission (U.S.A.E.C.) contract for plus 50 per cent pitchblende concentrates. Secondly tailings from the gravity plant and some high grade ores were trucked to Rum Jungle and sold to the Australian Atomic Energy Comm- ission (A.A.E.C.). Thirdly solvent extraction plants were built at Moline (previously Northern Hercules) by United Uranium N.L. (UOU.N.L.) and at the South Alligator River by South Alligator Uranium N.L. (SOA.U.N.L.). These were the first solvent extraction plants designed in Australia, as earlier plants used the ion exchange process for recovery of uranium oxide. The plants were small, indeed the S.A.U.N.L. 15 ton per day plant was possibly the smallest commercial plant known, but they operated efficiently with good recoveries, and were placed on a care and maintenance'òbasis when contracts were filled. Sulphuric acid was supplied in bulk to both plants by the A.A.E.C. from the 30 ton a day acid plant at Rum Jungle. Gold was recovered as a by product of uranium ore from the Moline plant.

Multistage slag treatment was carried out to investigate boron removal from metallurgical grade silicon. Boron is known to be one of the most difficult elements to remove from silicon. Depending on boron initial concentration, boron can be removed from silicon into certain level; most previous studies have attained final 50–100 ppmw (parts per million weight) boron in the silicon using slag treatment. The term ‘multistage’ refers to a process where the resulting silicon from the initial slag treatment is further refined multiple times using a new slag. In this study, an initial slag composition of 45CaO-45SiO2-10Al2O3 (wt per cent) was utilised. Using this technique, boron level in the silicon was expected to be gradually lowered because the new slag will always have more capacity to reach the equilibrium distribution coefficient (LB = (ppmwB)slag/(ppmwB)Si). The current study was carried out through combined thermodynamic calculations (using FactSage™ ver 8.2, by Thermfact Ltd, thermochemical package) and high-temperature experimentation. The thermodynamic calculations were carried out for reactions at 1500, 1550, and 1600°C for three different scenarios: 1. Single stage refining with varied slag to Si ratio. 2. Multistage refining with slag to Si ratio of 1:1. 3. Multistage refining with slag to Si ratio of 2:1. The multistage experimental work was carried out at 1550°C under inert gas atmosphere each time for 2 hrs, with slag to Si ratio of 2:1. The simulation results indicate that the boron distribution coefficient stay essentially constant with varying slag to Si ratio and temperature, around 1.8 to 2, and the experimental results measured LB in the same range, between 1.5 and 2.5. By harnessing this feature, the simulation showed that boron can be removed by approximately 78 per cent in each stage. The experimental result confirmed that the boron concentration in the silicon was reduced by a total of 97.8 per cent from its initial value using four stages of slag treatment, from initial 270 ppmw down to 6 ppmw.

Iron ore reduction and iron cementation by CH4-H2-Ar gas was investigated in a laboratory isothermal fixed bed reactor. Iron ore was first reduced to metallic iron by hydrogen, then carburised to cementite by methane. Increasing temperature and hydrogen content accelerated the reduction process. Methane had almost no effect on the reduction process. Meanwhile, higher temperatures increased the rate of cementation and also the rate of free carbon deposition. The optimal temperature for cementite formation was found to be 750¦C. At this temperature, reduction of iron ore to cementite by gas containing 55 vol per cent hydrogen, 35 vol per cent methane and 10 vol per cent argon was completed in about 15 minutes. Addition of sulphur into the reducing/carburising gas strongly retarded the process of cementite formation and free carbon deposition. Cementite is an unstable phase which decomposes to iron and carbon. The rate of cementite decomposition increased with temperature up to 600¦C and above 750¦C . In the temperature range from 600¦C to 750¦C the rate of cementite decomposition decreased with temperature. Cementite was the most stable at 750¦C and least stable at 600¦C. The two-interface grain model was used to describe the process of iron ore reduction and the volume reaction model was employed to model the iron cementation process. The simulated results for both reduction and cementation are consistent with the experimental data.

"Geometallurgical programs require the collection of representative samples for geochemical, mineralogical and metallurgical test work. Such protocols must be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The distribution, proportion and size of gold particles have a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling and test work protocols, and the gold recovery processes employed. Characterisation studies focusing on ore mineralogy, and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. High resolution X-ray computed tomography provides a non-destructive method for analysing the 3D nature of gold in rock samples. It can be used to calculate the modal abundance, particle size and distribution of gold in the sample volume. This paper presents a case study of the imaging of in situ gold particles in a high-grade gold ore. The Nick O’Time reef system comprises laminated quartz veins, which locally bear extreme grades of up to 100 oz/t gold. The mineralisation has previously been characterised from both a mineralogical and metallurgical perspective. Eight visible gold-bearing vein samples were scanned using X-ray microtomography. The Asanko Gold Mine in Ghana started processing ore from the Nkran pit in January 2016 at a production nameplate of 3 Mt/a. The flowsheet is a conventional SAG, ball mill and pebble crusher (SABC) with gravity-gold and carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery. The nameplate production was comfortably achieved within 3 months, so much so, that it was clear the SABC circuit was capable of processing more than the downstream section of the plant. Consequently, a program of de-bottlenecking was initiated to rectify volumetric capacity constraints. This program was later referred to as ‘Project 5 Million’ (t/a) or P5M. Having completed the de-bottlenecking exercise, it became evident that the SABC circuit could not reach 5 Mt/a solely on hard rock from Nkran. The new challenge was therefore to increase the capacity of the milling circuit through a focused comminution initiative that would address the following: geometallurgical treatment plan; upfront fragmentation requirements; installation of feed and mill monitoring equipment; and integration of a knowledge-based control strategy. This paper takes the reader through the various measures implemented to increase the milling rates and to create a stable/ sustainable control philosophy. Escalating energy and electricity costs have become one of the biggest expenditure drivers in mining operations. During the last eight years, energy costs have trebled when expressed as a percentage of total running cost in South African mines. Power consumption on mines is controlled by three main strategies, namely load clipping where energy use is reduced for parts of the day, load shifting where energy use is shifted to other parts of the day, and energy efficiency where energy use is reduced permanently.To reduce the operating costs of ventilating and cooling underground mines continuously, system optimisation studies must be completed. A part of this paper describes methods that can be used to reduce energy usage by optimising cooling and ventilation systems during planning and in existing operations using network simulation models that accurately reflect the current and planned ventilation conditions. These models are used to examine various options for improving the overall ventilation and cooling efficiency. Furthermore, an overview of refrigeration and cooling practices, and ventilation strategies is presented.Ventilation-on-demand and cooling-on-demand strategies have the potential to reduce both the capital and operating costs associated with mine ventilation and cooling systems. In addition, it has been proven that modern strategies and energy-efficient tactics are technically feasible.It is also important that the correct equipment selection is made. This must be based on the best technology with the highest energy efficiency. Where equipment replacement is being considered, energy efficiency must be one of the key decision drivers.In this paper a number of studies were presented and from the experience and the data presented it is clear that a large financial benefit is possible through optimising ventilation and cooling during the planning of mines or within an existing operating mine.CITATION:du Plessis, J J L, 2015. Process optimisation and continuous improvement are usually acknowledged when making a process more effective, efficient and transparent. During the last few decades, thousands of companies around the world have used total quality concepts in order to establish a continuous improvement process in their companies. Typically these companies apply some kind of Kaizen-type tools and expect results in the short term; however, the great majority of companies are poorly implementing these continuous improvement programs.Usually the most common reasons for failure of the program are lack of commitment from leaders, lack of discipline and engagement from the team to follow process and lack of clear targets for the program. When the results do not come at the expected timeline, it is common to simply drop the current process and apply a different approach from another company or consulting firm.This paper will explore some successful cases of companies that have invested time and effort to establish a reliable and sustainable process of continuous improvement. The focus will be case studies of mines and smelters around the world that use the plan–do–check–act (PDCA) cycle to increase productivity with the best services and lowest costs. This paper discusses the use of simulation in the mine planning process. A case study on the Newcrest Cadia East project is presented, and the challenges and possibilities for using simulation as a tool for mine planning and scheduling is discussed.The simulation study presented in this paper was performed during the project’s prefeasibility stage, and focused on the planning and scheduling of the development of panels in the future mine. The Cadia East project will be the largest underground operation in Australia and the first using panel caving. Simulation was used in order to optimise the development of panels; it was mainly used in order to verify the plans for the development process and allocate resources in an optimal way. The work was performed as an iterative process and adjustments to the plans were made according to simulation results. Bottlenecks were identified and different scenarios were tested.The results from the simulation study shows how different operational constraints affect the planned development process and how changes in priorities can be necessary in order to maintain a high development speed. Furthermore the study shows how changes in planned mine layout requires changed strategies, and how this was solved using the simulation tool.In this paper the authors critically discusses the use of simulation in mining operations: what are the limitations and challenges of using simulation as a tool for mine planning and scheduling, what are the benefits, and what do we aim for in the future?

This paper provides an overview of methods for measuring tunnel deflection and construction’s effects on the surrounding environment during and post construction. It will also review illustrative case studies from within Australia and overseas that are most relevant to local construction conditions. Systems illustrated include; vibrating wire and fibre optic strain gauges, extensometers, load cells and piezometers. A novel system using radar interferometry which requires no contact to the structure will also be investigated.In Australia, the majority of tunnelling activity occurs in urban areas (or in the case of mining in rural area) with limited seismic risk. However, the unexpected movement of tunnels is an important factor for structural engineers to monitor. During construction, monitoring is focused on the performance of the tunnelling lining, the supports under real conditions and the effects on surrounding infrastructure. After construction, monitoring will determine the effect of live traffic loads and can also evaluate the durability and any degradation of the tunnel. The aging of some tunnels or the forces subjected by nearby major construction can directly lead to a decrease in structural stability and deformation.The conventional way of inspecting and monitoring those tunnel movements is to have engineers physically enter the tunnel and carry out the measurement work. Manual techniques include tunnel wall convergence checks or total station measurement. However the associated costs are high and measurement process is difficult as some tunnel areas are inaccessible and the data collection interval is limited by the speed of the operator.Automated sensor networks utilising extensometers, fibre optics sensors or strain gauges can be used on tunnel segments or surrounding buildings. Nansananka Conglomerate and other correlates in- eluding cale-alkaline volcanics and carbonate beds). This Sepic event was followed in Pliocene-Present times by the obduction of the Finisterre-Adelbert-Oenake fore-arc or possibly oceanic plateau. "The Australian mining industries approach to life-of-mine planning has improved considerably in recent decades. It now needs to be matched by, and embedded in, mining governance systems that utilise a comprehensive whole-of-mine-life approach within a jurisdictional, industry and regional regime rather than just focusing on specific impacts in isolation. The need for a more comprehensive approach is supported by the many mining legacies, from historic, recent and some operating mine sites around Australia. There are sites that are leaving enduring environmental, community and public health impacts that are yet to be accurately assessed. While a number of these sites in Australia are estimated to be more than 50 000, this is probably an underestimation, with a lack of data and different state-based approaches complicating attempts to quantify mining legacies as a national issue. Qualitative assessments about the extent and nature of mining legacy impacts on nature and communities across Australia are also required if we are to understand and avoid ongoing and future mining legacies.This paper commences with an exploration of mining legacies as an umbrella term for previously mined, abandoned, orphan, derelict or neglected sites. This is followed by a discussion of the current status of mining legacies as an Australia-wide issue, contrasting the Australian response with overseas examples. Common themes from past workshops are explored recognising that mining legacies are a growing public policy issue and identifying key ingredients for a successful response. Supporting this, and based on national data which re-enforces the need for action, is the changing scale and intensity of mining in Australia that, while lowering costs for mine operators, increases the liability that may eventually fall to the state if mine sites are not rehabilitated effectively. Though a national issue, mining is a state and territory responsibility, so the current approach to mining legacies is then examined state-by-state. Given the widespread application and recent changes to bonds and levies in Western Australia (WA) and the Northern Territory (NT) the merits of both are examined with reference to specific case studies. Despite the current division of responsibility and diversity of approaches, however, mining legacies remain a significant and growing problem with a recognised need and repeated call for cooperation and coordination at a national and international level. WMC Resources Olympic Dam Operation located in South Australia, is a poly metallic underground sublevel open stoping (SLOS) mining operation with a current annual production rate in excess of 9.0 Mt. Stope size, geometries, geotechnical considerations, drilling and blasting are critical components in stope performance. These factors are further influenced by stringent ventilation requirements due to the presence of airborne radioactive contaminants from uranium mineralisation. Stope planning is complex and mass blasting methodologies have been trialled at Olympic Dam with the view to reducing the frequency of stope blasts, improving stope stability, productivity and ultimately improving overall stope performance. A key aspect in the ability to undertake underground mass blasts of this scale is the application of i-konTM electronic initiation technology by Orica. In the past two years in excess of three million tonnes has been initiated utilising this electronic technology, with an average blast of 250 000 t ranging to the largest to date being 580 000 t. By providing flexibility in blast designs, the use of electronic detonators has allowed mass firings over multiple sublevels. This has resulted in a significant reduction in stope extraction steps compared to conventional pyrotechnic firings. The benefits of this reduction in the number of stope blasts are wide ranging from improved stability of interim stope voids between blasts, reduced blasthole damage, improved blast vibration management and reduction of complex changes to ventilation systems for blasting.

The epizonal Ag-Pb-Zn vein deposit at San Bartolome is characterised by a base-metal sulphide assemblage containing the spectacular development of interpenetrating, bladed networks of pyrrhotite which have been replaced by marcasite and pyrite. A similar assemblage displaying the same crystal habits and textures are also a diagnostic feature of the Sn and Sn- Ag deposits of Bolivia. On this basis, it is reasonable to conclude that both deposits were formed from fluids of similar nature and origin. Although no economic accumulation of Sn is known in San Bartolomr, further comparison of the geologic setting, age, mineralogy, fluid inclusion data and magmatic association of this deposit with the Bolivian systems has highlighted additional similarities consistent with a hypothesis that more extensive Sn mineralisation might exist in the San Bartolomd area.

This paper outlines the mechanism of Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) and how it can cause premature failure of rock bolts. SCC occurs due to the progressive development and growth of cracks in the surface of a metal, and it is caused by the combined effects of stress and a corrosive environment affecting susceptible metals and alloys. It can occur in most metals including stainless steel. It is not a new phenomenon, but its effect on rock bolts has only been recognised recently.Rock bolt failures caused by SCC appear to be brittle failures which occur at less than the ultimate tensile strength of the bolt. In the mining industry, SCC failures of rock bolts can occur a few months, or after many years of exposure to stress and a corrosive environment. If SCC of rock bolts is suspected, then the rock bolts should be examined by a metallurgist, and steps should be taken to reduce the problem.

Resolution Copper Mining LLC (RCML) is one of the largest undeveloped high-grade porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits in the world, with an orebody at depths of approximately 2000 m beneath post-mineralisation cover. With a vision to develop a large-scale, low-cost operating mine, the project is designed as a micropanel cave with an advanced undercut.In September 2014, RCML began a study focusing on identifying and selecting the best production cases to eventually reach full production (120 kt/d). To achieve this, a methodology was developed that allows the fast evaluation of a large number of production schedules.Dassault Systèmes GEOVIA was commissioned to enhance the Footprint Finder program for batch scheduling panel cave production. The tonnage and grade schedules produced by Footprint Finder were compared to schedules developed using personal computing block caving (PCBC™). The inputs to Footprint Finder were then adjusted to achieve a reasonable correlation with the PCBC™ schedules.The enhanced Footprint Finder program was used to batch-process nearly 54 000 schedules using 20 elevations, 17 shutoff grades, four heights of draw, two different copper grades (modelled and upside), two layout refinements within the existing footprint and a variety of production ramp-up rates to 120 kt/d. The study team developed processes to analyse large amounts of data, to assist in selecting a matrix of the best schedules for detailed assessment using PCBC™. Three hundred PCBC™ schedules were developed.The detailed trade-offs between the scenarios is currently underway with promising results. Dynamic market and operating conditions, coupled with an environment in which multiple objectives and trade-offs are common, pose major challenges for planners and schedulers working in any mining entity. Many mining companies recognise the need to shift from a siloed mining-focused push model to an integrated value chain, demand-driven approach, but there are still fundamental barriers in business process and the supporting technology preventing a consideration of end-to-end optimality.This paper presents some elements of experiences working with companies to adopt such advanced approaches. In addition to algorithmic elements, an approach to phased and gradual deployment of progressively more sophisticated optimisation models is described. From a practical software adoption perspective, it is believed that this last concern is also of primary importance. Next generation approaches to the optimisation of complex bulk commodity demand chains, namely iron ore and coal are presented, with case studies in the world’s largest integrated operations in Western Australia and Queensland from the raw material mined through to market. Utilising accurate simulation models supported by metaheuristic optimisation techniques, a range of ways to engineer a dynamic decision support framework that can adapt and change with the inevitable changes in commodity markets is explored. INCREASE OF CATASTROPHE FREQUENCY AND SEVERITYIn the last couple of decades the frequency of natural catastrophes has increased dramatically. This realization results from the statistical analysis of the comprehensive loss data that we have been collecting constantly over the last 30 years and have evaluated in connec-tion with the preparation of our "World Map of Natural Hazards", which is now in its second edition (Munich Re, 1988). Each month brings data on between 30 and 50 new loss events. Fortunately, however, only a few of these have to be added to the list of major natural catastrophes, that is only those involv-ing damage that considerably exceeds what the country or region concerned can handle itself so that substantial na-tional or international aid is required. That is generally the case if the number of dead runs into the hundreds or thousands, if tens or hundreds of thousands of people are rendered home-less and if the total economic loss is in the region of US$ 100 million. These major catastrophes, about which we have fairly comprehensive data even in the case of those that occurred farther back in the past, numbered only 14 in the 1960s but 70 in the 1980s; they there-fore increased over a period of 30 years by a factor of 5. The trend is also very clear when we consider the total economic loss, which - adjusted for in-flation - increased during the same period from an average of US$ 3.7 bil-lion per year to US$ 11.4 billion, i.e. by a factor of 3.1. The insured losses, finally, increased by as much as a fac-tor of 4.8.

The McArthur, Balma (new name) and Habgood Groups are thick (up to 4.5 km) correlative sequences of shallow water evaporitic carbonates, mudstones and sandstones that are exposed largely within the Batten, and southern and northern Walker Fault Zones (Batten and Walker Troughs) of the McArthur Basin respectively. Recent re-mapping of the Walker Fault Zone has provided data for refined stratigraphic correlations between these groups. Two significant hiatuses are now recognised within the Balma Group (base of Vaughton Siltstone and base of Yarrawirrie Formation) and these may represent tectonically-generated sequence boundaries which may correlate with similar local hiatuses within the McArthur Group such as at the base of the Teena Dolomite and Lynott Formation respectively.
