Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past 10 years has been 5·5 per cent compared to a world average of 4·1 per cent.Over the next 10 years growth rate is expected to increase to 6 per cent per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry.By the end of the 19705 natural gas is expected to supply more than 9 per cent of Australia's primary energy market. Coal will supply 40 per cent and petroleum products 47 per cent. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but will make only a small contribution in the period.Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970s and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude oil, while supplying 60-70 per cent of requirements in the initialyears, will need regular and sizable additions if they are to keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated that new discoveries will need to approximate ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date.

UNLIKE coal mines, in which some form of artificial ventilation is rendered necessary by gases given off by the material mined and is also enforced by the mining laws of all countries, metalliferous mines have almost entirely relied on natural ventilation, viz., that due to the difference in temperature between the outside atmosphere and the mine air. In small mines natural ventilation has proved sufficient, but as mining proceeds at a greater depth, and where large ore bodies arebeing attacked the writer is of opinion that some means of artificial ventilation will be rendered necessary if only from an economic standpoint.The Broken Hill Proprietary Mine was one of the first metal mines to introduce a scheme of artificial ventilation on a large scale. In order to render the working conditions of the semi-friable stopes of Block 12 and the lower levels of Block 11 morecomfortable for the men at work in these places, in 1903 it was decided to install a fan to thoroughly ventilate these stopes. The fan chosen was a Capell double-inlet fan beltdriven from a steam engine: this engine was later on replacedby an electric motor. The fan was put in commission at the latter end of 1904; its principal dimensions are as follows: Length 6 ft. 6 in., diam. 7 ft., diam. of inlet 4 ft. 7i in. The fan is reversible, though this is a rather misleading term, asthe direction in which the fan blades revolve is not reversed...

Zircon is the second in abundance among the heavy minerals occurring in the beach sand along the coastal belt of Bangladesh. In this study a detailed characterisation of Bangladesh zircon extracted at the pilot plant of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission at CoxÆs Bazar has been attempted using chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. From the chemical analysis it is found that Bangladesh zircon has a purity of 95.88 per cent. The main impurity in Bangladesh zircon is titanium oxide (3.01 per cent). This is followed by iron oxide (0.42 per cent). A number of other oxides are also found. Microscopic study revealed that Bangladesh zircon has an elongated, prismatic shape with pyramidal termination in about half of the grains while the rest are more or less rounded. Some fractured and irregular grains are also found. Bulk sample of Bangladesh zircon in the as-received condition shows a yellowish brown color. However, individual zircon grains are seen to be almost colourless and transparent under polarised light. XRD study confirmed good crystallinity in the sample. Under the microscope it is found that zircon grains constitute 94 per cent while total impurities amount to six per cent in Bangladesh zircon. This result agrees fairly well with the chemical analysis results. Microscopic study identifies oxides of titanium (both rutile and ilmenite) to be the main impurity, in conformity with the findings of chemical analysis. Further, monazite was also identified as an impurity under the microscope. An iron bearing coating is also found on a few zircon grains. Most of the impurities found in Bangladesh zircon exist as discrete minerals.

Grinding has been one of the areas of major development at Outokumpu's concentrators. During its early years the company used entirely rod and hall mills, but due to the high costs of metallic grinding it began the testing of autogenous grinding as early as the 1950s. In the late-1970s, the company's own modification for two stage autogenous grinding was ready for industrial use. Surprisingly late, in the 80s - 90s, an interest rose to check also the effects of grinding methods on flotation results. This paper firstly gives a short history of the development work of Outokumpu type autogenous grinding, called 'Outogenius'. The effects of some grinding methods on the process results of two nickel ores are then reviewed. The tests to date show notable effects of grinding methods on flotation.

In the late 1970's Western Mining Corporation, Exploration Division considered the purchase of a major multi-element spectrometer as an adjunct to our existing atomic absorption spectrophotometers. The analytical work proposed for the unit included barium, uranium and rare earth elements from Olympic Dam, uranium, sulphur, vanadium and strontium on Yeelirrie type deposits, major element and whole rock analysis, multi-element analysis of samples from the laterite, chromium and manganese exploration programmes and tin and arsenic analysis. These were all analyses that were not readily or easily performed by flame atomic absorption or were where we expected that a simultaneous multi-element instrument would be an advantage. Also the turnaround times for the commercial laboratories was considered unacceptably long for some determinations. Other factors, important when considering the spectrometer were the ability to ensure confidentiality of results and the ability to assign our own priorities and not to have to rely on commercial laboratories. The two techniques considered were X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry. The decision was made in favour of the ICP unit for several reasons. The ICP fitted in with our existing methodology, ie samples digested for atomic absorption or colorimetric techniques would also be suitable for ICP analysis and vice versa. The technique was suitable for water samples and for major element analyses and for rare earth elements. X-ray fluorescence spectrometers were installed at the Kambalda and Belmont laboratories and would be available to us for routine checking and for elements not suitable for ICP analysis. The final consideration was price. ICP was considerably cheaper than XRF.

Cu-Au porphyry deposits are large tonnage low-grade resources dependent on processing large volumes of material. The ability to understand and predict comminution performance is critical, as it is frequently the rate-limiting step during processing. Parameters required from geometallurgical mapping and modelling of comminution performance are: A×b processing domains based on impact breakage variability, and BMWi processing domains showing grind response variability which lead to Mine throughput domains for a specific comminution circuit configuration. Due to the cost and/or large sample requirements of traditional comminution tests, insufficient data density and distribution of comminution indices commonly exist, making it difficult to model and map deposit scale variability. One method routinely applied to three dimensional domaining is to have an a priori zoning based on geological features (lithology, alteration, mineralogy, textures), and then apply to all material within a given domain the metallurgical values measured on a single sample or average of samples from that domain. The problem with this approach is that commonly the geological domains do not reflect comminution response, therefore compromising the quality of the average domain estimate. To resolve this problem an alternate integrated geometallurgical mapping and modelling method is applied to model and map comminution performance at Cadia East. This paper uses a data set of ~32 000 assay measurements and geological logging information, integrated with ~150 comminution measurements to analyse and develop proxy support models for comminution indices (ie A×b, BMWi, and throughput) based on inherent geological variability. Discrete downhole comminution processing domains are created, mapping orebody response while maintaining inherent variability.

The paper describes the 209 in. single stage axial flow mine ventilating fan which commenced operation at The Zinc Corporation Limited, Broken'Hill, N.S.W., in January, 1954.This fan is used to ,ventilate the underground workings of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited and, at the time of installation it was the largest fan of its type in the world. It has amaximum capacity of 900,000 c.f.m. at 4·2 in. watergauge and is equipped with adjustable pitch blades and a novel form of variable speed drive.The considerations which lead to the adoption of this particular design are outlined, and a full description of the contruction and installation of the fan and auxiliaries is given.Comprehensive acceptance tests were carried out on the completed installation and, the testing procedure is described in detail. The results of sound level measurements are also included. A brief report on the performance during the 12 month period from 1st July, 1954, to 30th June, 1955, is then given.SELECTION AND DESIGN OF FANGeneral ConsiderationsBecause of the economic advantages of joint ventilation of the underground workings of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, it was decided, after a full review of the future ventilating requirements of both mines, to sink a 20 ft. diameter circular upcast airway on the common boundary of the two properties, to handle a maximum quantity of 900,000 c.f.m.The anticipated air requirements were at this stage estimated to be:(a) initially 700,000 c.f.m. through a mine equivalent orifice of 160 to 2'40 sq. ft. The analysis of equipment trends in The AusIMMÆs revision of Monograph 19 - Australasian Mining and Metallurgical Operating Practices (AMMOP) (in prep) in the paper by Graham Lumley raised some interesting, and in parts disturbing, trends in the Australian open cut mining industry. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2011) the productivity of the whole mining industry is down by 34 per cent since 2001. In terms of open cut equipment, median output for draglines is down by 15 per cent since 2003, electric rope shovels are down by 41 per cent since 2003, hydraulic excavators are down by 39 per cent since 2008, front-end loaders are down by 39 per cent since 2007 and trucks are down by 41 per cent since 2006. Clearly e boom has not been good for the efficiency of the mines. During this same time, best practice (defined as the average of the top ten per cent by annual output per unit of input) has declined, but not by as much as the median (eg shovels down by eight per cent, excavators down by 19 per cent and FELs down by five per cent). This paper will build on the analysis of AMMOP to understand the differences occurring between median and best practice and identify the factors contributing to the decline in performance. As the industry enters a period of potentially lower prices for commodities and reduced margins, pressure will be brought to bear on mine sites to start moving more with the equipment they have. An understanding of where efficiency has been lost will be a key component in that. The information contained in AMMOP, and the subsequent analysis of that information in papers such as this one, will be crucial to reversing the decline in open cut equipment performance.CITATION:Lumley, G, Trott, T and Lewis, M, 2012. The patterns of occupational health pro- grammes in mining and metallurgy are discussed in relation to the impact of chemical and phy- sical hazards on the health of workers in these fields. Mining and metallurgy are quite unique in that their history and practice embrace virtually the total spectrum of occupational health problems and hazards as understood today. A panoramic concept of the possibilities would comprise the following fields: 1. The Pneumoconioses or Dust Diseases. 2. Physical stress due to exertion, and exposure to heat and humidity in deep mines. 3. The toxic effects of various metals in the mining of ore. The most obvious are lead, mercury, arsenic and manganese. 4. Diseases associated with mining. These include leptospirosis, ankylostomiasis and mycotic infections of the skin. 5. The Beat Diseases of coal miners working in narrow seams. 6. Illumination problems and miners nystagmus. 7. Geographical and climatic problems

A review has been made of the studies focusing on methods for the description of grain -size distribution after breakage and, separa- tely, of the degree of liberation of the miner- al species making up the various grain-size classes of comminution products. The purpose of the study has been to de- velop an overall model of the phenomenon which, owing to the very effect of comminution, leads to the formation of grains that are generally of mixed composition. A calculation procedure has thus been de- veloped for the liberation function taken as the assessment of the distribution of mix com- ponents in the products obtained after a commi- nution process. The aim is to identify a func- tion which may, to a certain extent, simulate the variation of the grade-recovery function of an ore in relation to its degree of comminu- tion. The numerical model thus obtained has been tested out on results obtained experimentally.

Mount Isa Mines Limited has been mining copper ore for 50 years. In recent years, this production has been entirely by open stoping methods with cemented backfill, mostly in the large 1100 orebody.This has been the major ore source for 20 years, with smaller amounts coming from the 400, 500, 650 and 1900 orebodies. At present, the 1100 orebody is the only source, and this situation will continue until the deep 3000 and 3500 orebodies begin producing in late 1992/93. Production rates have increased to almost 6 Mt/yr, and are planned to rise to 7 Mt/yr by 1995/96. In the future, there will be a move towards variations of the open stoping system as production moves to more lensy zones of the southern 1100 orebody and to the deeper 3000 and 3500 orebodies. This paper describes current operations in the 1100 Orebody, with some indications of future directions.

æZero waste steel making productionÆ has already been the subject of several studies and also the successful result of some companies. Regarding waste and by-products, slags are the largest in terms of weight, although among the least hazardous. All steelmakers around the world are presently looking into profitable solutions, according to their local conditions: environment constraints, available markets, and mode of operation. Today the major technical methods of slag value capture include different levels of magnetic separation and screening to remove entrained steel, for production of aggregate in civil works. A survey of different retrieval processes shows that pyrometallurgical processing of steelmaking slags will increase the recovery ratio of iron and other metals. In the process, the remaining part of the material, a mixture of metallic oxides, can be easily transformed into hydraulic binder such as cement. Can steelmakers consider the slag as a co-product, and not only a waste or by-product? The ability of pyrometallurgical processes to treat other wastes and by-products generated in the steelplant is an opportunity for the steelmakers to reach the æzero waste productionÆ status. A technical survey of the experiences and possible solutions of pyrometallurgical processing is presented as well as technical descriptions of technological, economical and profitability analysis in relation with foreseeable markets.

A study has been made into the influence of feed size distribution on the flotation response of coal. The results show that a full description of the flotation response of a coal must not only consider the inherent floatability of the coal, but also, the size distribution of the feed to flotation. The performances of a number of flotation circuits were compared using a coal which was "poorly floating" because of its size distribution. Split feed flotation, two stage reagent addition, and reflotation of classified tailings all gave better yields than that obtained by conventional single stage flotation. The optimum flotation circuit for the washing of the coal in question, was reflotation of classified tailings.

Real-time monitoring of mine operating parameters is available at most mines. However, access to these data for an individual operation is typically underutilised by mine managers and technical personnel. Such monitoring systems are typically designed to provide data streams and alarms to a responsible person, but they are not utilised to extract underlying trends or correlate different data groups. Furthermore, multiple monitoring systems are usually implemented at a given site without interconnection between vendors’ systems or connection to any central management, and mine personnel are only exposed to a minimal subset of such data. Thus, it is not easy to analyse and correlate individual data streams and generate information to enhance day-to-day operational decision-making and improve safety and efficiency.This paper addresses the primary challenges associated with centralising data management and effecting greater utilisation of the vast amount of collected data, while at the same time reducing the time and effort required to manage such large data sets. Furthermore, it presents the conceptual design of a database application that can organise, present and analyse data collected by multiple sensors in different environments. The database is designed to operate in a passive manner so that active mine data management systems are not impacted. An example is given where this database is used for managing atmospheric data collected at an underground coalmine operation in the US. The production of approximately 550 000 tonnes of æwhiteÆ or chrysotile asbestos fibre between 1972 and 1983 at the Woodsreef Mine in New South Wales left behind 24 million tonnes of tailings and 75 million tonnes of waste rock and overburden. The Woodsreef Magnesium Project is designed to extract the 23 per cent magnesium content of the tailings to produce magnesium metal and magnesium alloys, the latter with aluminium from the New South Wales smelters. Further value will be added to the tailings waste with the downstream production of magnesium alloy sheets and cast products for the transportation, electronics and other consumer goods industries. The mine opened in 1918 and closed in 1983 becoming derelict. There has been minimal expenditure on rehabilitation compared with that recommended in reports commissioned by the New South Wales Government. The tailings dump has been designated æasbestos wasteÆ by the EPA and will be eliminated through the magnesium refinery process of the Project with the dissolution of the remaining chrysotile fibres. The benign waste from the refinery process will consist principally of silica with some iron. Significant energy savings are expected from innovative new processing technology, in the alloy formation and in the application of the light weight, cast and sheet metal products, particularly in the transportation industries. Globally, there are very large resources of similar tailings with hundreds of years of useful productive lives that could be converted into the metal of the 21st Century, magnesium, and its alloys, to assist pollution and greenhouse gas reduction from transportation industries. No new mining and minimal feedstock preparation is required. Unlike potential producers using carbonate rocks such as magnesite and dolomite that have to be mined, the asbestos tailings composed principally of non-fibrous serpentinite do not contain any carbon dioxide.

However, mining can cause damage and pollution of the environment and therefore we must manage our resources wisely accounting for the physical, biological and social environments. Contrary to the view of some people not conversant with the facts mining has in many cases improved the environment. This paper described how two sand dune systems that were unstable prior to mining have been stabilised by revegetation after mining.

In the early ages man contented himself with the use of such tools and appliances as would assist him in the enlightenment of his labours. With the advancement of science, numerous motives, with modifications and adaptations, have been introduced to enlighten labours, and in many cases have taken the place of man, but it can hardly be said that this applies to shovels, although one of the oldest implements of labour; certainly, with the introduction of the steam shovel the labours of man have been considerably reduced, but the hand shovel of today is used similarly to that of years ago.If the principle of the hand shovel has not been improved upon, it must not be suggested that the manufacturers of this article are not endeavouring to improve its quality, and the main point with which the manufacturers have to contend is the production of an article which will give a maximum of durability combined with a minimum of lightness. In order to accomplish this they must select suitable material, and subject it to such heat treatment process that will produce a shovel having a maximum of hardness and toughness without being unduly brittle, and which will withstand the excessive wear to which it is subjected.In this article an endeavour will be made to explain (a) the manufacture of shovels; (b) the defects commonly met with-the cause of same and measures which are necessary to remedy them.Before doing so a brief description will be given of the class of steel used for shovels; this is an important factor, and a steel which is admirably suitable is a plain carbon one containing approximately 55 - 70% C., and closely resembles that used for the manufacture of railway rails. This plain carbon steel is very extensively used, although at present alloy steels are being utilised to a certain extent for shovel manufacture, and with suitable heat-treatment.

To construct the accessing railroad line to the northern portal of Seikan Undersea Tunnel, nine tunnels amounting 7.4km in their total length were excavated through soft mudstones of young- er tertiary era with use of smaller-sized mechanic al excavators. Rocks were classified in four classes to which the tunnel support was designed respectively. Of several combinations of driving equipments stu- died comparatively, the method using the mechani- cal excavators was estimated to be the best choi- ce. The efficiency of the excavator was traced in every construction section and the data colle- cted was reviewed numerically. The result showed that the efficiency of the excavator dropped wh- ere the rocks were as hard as over 200kg/crif for compressive strength. And a few technigues in tunnelling i.e. contr- olling dusts in shotcreting, lattice arch, evaluati- ng measured deformations were tested and review- ed too.

The Goodyear nickel prospect is located 45 km southeast of Kalgoorlie (31.04¦S, 121.80¦E) near the eastern boundary of Hampton Area - East Location 45 (Figure 1). Nickel mineralisation was discovered on the Goodyear prospect in March 1996 when a reverse circulation drillhole (GYC5), initially drilled in December 1995, was deepened to meet a minimum footwall penetration requirement of 20 in that had been set for the drill program. Approximately 3 in of sulphides averaging 4.9 per cent nickel was intersected from 296 metres down-hole, this being within 2 in of the first end-of-hole. Hole GYC5 was part of an eight hole drilling program undertaken by Titan Resources in late-1995. This program was designed to test whether nickel mineralisation in the Dunlop prospect, discovered by the Western Mining Corporation - BHP Camylia Joint Venture immediately east of the East Location 45 boundary, continued across the tenement boundary. The area targeted by the initial drill program had been explored by Western Mining Corporation in the mid-1980s using extensive surface sampling and a drilling program that included 17 RAB and percussion drillholes. None of these holes intersected nickel Mineralisation.\
