Compared with modern longwall coal mining systems, automation has not been developed very far in the underground metal minin industry. One of the main reasons for this is that present har rock mining systems do not produce ore with a controlled degre of fragmentation. The often poor fragmentation from the stopescauses large extra costs and precludes material which 1-ends itself to automationThe paper investigates the possibility c technology for automatic loading and trapconveyor belt to a shaft dump pocket. With this concept, it will be necessary to control the maximum fragment size by careful blasting design. The degree of fragmentation will have to be finer than is common to-day. The study shows that the belt conveyor mining con-cept with controlled fragmentation may be economically competitive with conventional cyclic loading and transport, even for an annual production as low as 0.5 mill. tonnes.. Fragmentation design and cost calculations have been based on a combination of the Kuznetsov relationship between blasting parameters and mean frag-ment size, and the Rosin-Rammler formula for fragment size distribution.

Following an increase in the number of methane ignitions in South African coal mines a new ventilation system was developed. The "Hydravert" system conceived in late 1979 for use in low seam coal mines, where the bord and pillar method of working is used, has been extensively developed to include applications for mining seams up to 4.5 metres high. A brief history of the development is supplied including some of the pitfalls encountered in the hydraulic equipment design and selection.

The detonation pressure of an explosive is a function of its density and its velocity of detonation (VOD) and relates directly to the degree and manner in which the explosive loads the surrounding rock. The suitabil- ity of an explosive to any particular situation is determined not so much by the total energy released but more by the rate at which it is released. As the science of rock blasting advances it is becoming economically more important to quantify explosive performance, particularly with respect to quality control and fragmentation. As part of a major explosive user, BHP Central Research Laboratories have developed a number of tech- niques to determine the detonation characteristics of explosives. These include a method of continuous velocity of detonation measurement based on the SLIFER principle. This not only enables the VOD of the explo- sive to be determined, but also has the versatility to allow factors such as under priming, slow run up, the effect of water, variable energy load- ing and the velocity of the shock wave in the stemming to be assessed. Multi point VOD systems have also been developed for more routine appli- cations. With a minor modification they can be used to determine the absolute delay of detonators accurately and economically. Direct deto- nation pressure measurement methods have also been developed based on piezoresistive techniques. Future developments include the incorpo- ration of all the above techniques into a single, portable package, allow- ing easy use on the mine site.

In 2001, the Springvale Coal Mine determined a requirement for a 360 m deep vertical airway to ventilate ongoing underground longwall mining operations. The project, referred to as the Springvale No 3 Ventilation Shaft, was completed in 2003 - 2004 by blind boring a 4.25 m diameter hole from the surface to the coal seam at 360 m depth. The shaft was completed with a 3.5 m inside diameter lining made from a continuous watertight steel and concrete composite pipe. Presented from both the clientÆs and the contractorÆs perspective, the following paper describes the process of constructing a blind bored ventilation shaft for this application. Beginning with the clientÆs definition of the requirements and specifications for the shaft, the paper describes the steps followed by Springvale Coal prior to awarding the contract. Springv aleÆs process involved a thorough site investigation including procurement of geotechnical data for prospective contractors and the management of issues relating to safety, quality and the environment. The clientÆs view is followed by a description of the planning and works performed by their nominated shaft drilling contractor, Ardent Underground Pty Ltd.The contractorÆs description of the works includes the details of the blind shaft drilling and lining construction process used for this application. The design of the shaft lining installed at Springvale Coal was the first of its type to be used in Australia. The successful installation of a watertight composite shaft lining and the safety of the method, which did not require any personnel to enter the shaft or the mine, were among the positive outcomes from the project.

The aim of this paper is to present a concept or model regarding a particular geological environment where gold orebodies occur in the Pine Creek Geosyncline and indeed in many other pans of the world. The name GIGIACS (an acronym for Gold In Greywacke In Anticlinal CrestS) is proposed to label this concept or model. The name Saddle Reefs (which has been in use for many years) is used for gold-bearing quartz veins which often occur in conjunction with Gigiacs. Simple patterns formed by this type of mineralisation at the surface due to different configurations are illustrated. Some examples of Gigiacs and associated saddle reefs are presented from the Pine Creek Geosyncline together with examples from other parts of the world. This concept has been used successfully as an exploration tool and five examples are given. The terms Gicsiacs (for Gold In Carbonaceous Shale In Anticlinal CrestS) and Giliacs (for Gold In Limestone In Anticlinal CrestS) are also used.

The kinetics of the direct chlorination of, zircon in the presence of carbon was studied at temperatures between 9000C and 12000 C. From the experimental data it is prop- osed that the most likely mechanism for metal oxide (MeO2) chlorination is as follows: At I Surfaceon zMeO2+ZMeCl - MeOC12 (1) At Carbon MeOC12+C+Cl MeC14+CO (2) Surface It.is envisaged that this type of mechan- ism would occur for both the zirconium and, silicon. constituents of the ore. In the above mechanism; the surface re- actions appear to be fast and not rate controll- ing. In a carbon surface deficient bed the diff- usion of oxychloride intermediate through the boundary layer to the carbon surface becomes the rate controlling step. In a zircon surface deficient bed the diffusion of oxychloride away from the zircon surface controls the reaction. This postulated mechanism can be used to ex-, plain the observed experimental effects.

The disagregation and privatisation of the mining and power gene ration operations of the former State Electricity Commission of Victoria has being taking place over the past five years. This has transformed the service provision to the new organisations and has resulted in major change to the working lives and professional relationships of thousands of Australians. The authors wish to take this opportunity to explore the issues arising as the program of privatisation of public assets continues. Changes within the workplace which resulted from the outsourcing of the 'investigation and design' functions and more lately as a result of privatisation of the operating, generating and distribution businesses are discussed. The responsibility of managers retaining the services of design engineers has changed. There is an added responsibility of contract administration and an increased focus on intellectual property and strategic issues. The way in which the sectors are adapting is discussed and future directions are explored. We welcome this opportunity to explore the changes in professional life which have taken place over the last five years in the Latrobe Valley Power industry. Engineers and earth scientists have a pivotal role in the continuing successful operation of the three Latrobe Valley Mines of the generation companies. The Mines' collectively excavate annually over 13 million cubic metres of overburden and 48 million tonnes of coal for delivery to mine-mouth power stations and for briquette manufacture.

The Southern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand are currently rising rapidly as a consequence of continental collision along the Pacific-Australian plate boundary. Rapid uplift has resulted in a major thermal anomaly in the shallow crust beneath the alps. Alpine topography and associated intense precipitation, coupled with the thermal anomaly are responsible for vigorous combined topographic/convective circulation of water through the shallow crust.

This paper outlines the advances made in vacuum filtration as developed by Outomec Process Filters and details the results obtained at a number of Australian installations. The first section of the paper details the technical advances made by the use of ceramic media in vacuum filtration and explains the reasons for the use of the technology. The second part of the paper discusses a number of Australian installations of the ceramic vacuum filter and where possible compares the actual experiences with those predicted from the test work which preceded the installations. As part of the fundamental studies on the recovery of Au by solvent extraction, the synergism of combined extractants on the extraction of An from the sulphuric acid solution containing thiourea was investigated. Extractants tested were di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), tri-n-octylamine (TOA), tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP), and trioctyl phosphine oxide (TOPO). Four kinds of extractant combinations, D2EHPA/TBP, D2EHPA/TOPO, TOA/I'BP, and TOAITOPO, were tested to clarify the synergism on the extraction of Au in terms of various concentration ratios, diluents, the concentration of sulphuric acid, and the concentration of thiourea.

As the Mount Morgan electrolytic chlorine plant is the first of its kind installed in Australia, and as the details of this method of producing chlorine have, up to the present time, been kept more or less secret all over the world, the author trusts that this paper may fill a gap in the technical literature of the subject.When an electric current is passed through a strong solution of sodium chloride the following reaction takes place -2 NaCl + 2 H 20 = 2 NaOH + C1 2 + H 2 Chlorine gas is liberated at the anode or entering pole of the current, while caustic soda and hydrogen are formed at the cathode or leaving pole of the current. If the two electrodes be simply immersed in a vessel containing salt and the current be turned on, there will be no result save slight smell of escaping chlorine gas. The passage of the current will have certainly split up the salt water according to the above equation, but as the products would be in juxtaposition they would immediately reunite, and the electrical energy would have been spent without any beneficial result having been obtained. Industry, especially extractive industry, must now give serious attention to the impact its operations have on the natural environment and on the economic, social, and cultural context within which it operates.   While this obligation is statutorily managed, there has been a recent shift towards a culture of self responsibility. Industry is now talking about earning its ôsocial licence to operateö and the importance of maintaining the ôtriple bottom lineö, thus adding environmental and social performance to the usual financial criteria used to measure organisational performance. The social context within which companies operate has also become more sensitive with industry responding to a growing public expectation that it conduct itself in a way that strives for sustainability by operating and developing in a way that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.   There are glowing accounts of industries engaging and collaborating with the communities within which they are based. In amongst these are also some disasters which result from cultural assumptions, industry created dependencies and the failure to attain community buy-in despite significant investment by the industry involved.   There are also remarkable stories of communities, and action groups within communities, being a significant catalyst for positive change of their natural, cultural and social environment. In amongst these stories there are also accounts of long and drawn out battles; adversarial situations where no one wins; a litany of mistrust, tricks and tactics, with the better resourced party ultimately achieving its primary objectives at the cost of the other (and at the cost of any potential fruitful, mutual relationships).   So what makes the difference in achieving the positive rather than negative outcomes? The answer lies in the way the outcomes are achieved. Building relationships based on good communication, respect for divergent views, mutual understanding, and the development of trust and empathy, makes it possible to identify shared goals and objectives that best meet the needs of all parties.   Research indicates the mining industry is making good progress in developing policy and commitment to community development and engagement but that, ætranslating commitments into improved practices at the site level remains one of the industryÆs toughest challengesÆ. (Australian Government - Community Engagement and Development Handbook October 2006 @ page 49.)   This paper considers the merits of a process of community collaboration and what it has to offer in terms of meeting that challenge.

This paper describes the technique developed by the Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories (ACIRL) for the treatment of bore core samples to obtain data for coal preparation studies of the target reserves. The particle size distribution within the sample has a significant influence on the relationship between the yield and ash per cent of the floats coal at any ash level. The size analysis within the reconstituted feed from a coal preparation plant is determined by the size analysis of the feed coal, physical degradation of material in the process, and the breakdown of associated shales in water. The extent of material breakdown was studied in the ACIRL coal preparation pilot plants. The method of bore core evaluation includes simulation of this breakdown in a sample selectively crushed to conform with predicted or known run-of-mine size distribution. Modifications have also been made to the laboratory methods for froth flotation to approximate more closely with industrial practice.

This paper concerns a pragmatic approach to a problem that is common to many operations in the mining industry: how, over the short-term, to grasp the extent and distribution of long-term financial risk from environmental causes and reduce these risks strategically, in order to maintain stability and flexibility in the operations. Surprisingly, many companies operate without an environmental master plan or tools that can help managers measure and reduce financial risks. Such companies may be subject to unknown unacceptable financial risks from environmental causes. While many companies have some kind of internal system of environmental standards, it is often the case that such systems have uneven or limited effect, and offer no opportunities for visualising, measuring or managing aggregate financial risks from environmental causes. `Aggregate risks' are defined here as the calculated total expected financial costs to a company, or a subdivision of a company, from environmental causes at nominated operations over a defined time period. Aggregate risks take into account the type and magnitude of an environmental problem set, the likelihood of occurrence, and the time frame during which the problems will develop or solutions are required. For the large corporation, the 'amount of' aggregate environmental risk is a statistic that can be managed, along with other financial parameters, at the corporate level to improve the stability and predictability of operations, and protect the interests of shareholders. This paper concerns development of a management framework and a tool for the large corporation that responds to the need for managing aggregate environmental financial risks. The logical framework proposed to overcome the need for strategic vision is the Environmental Master Plan, and this is described in the next section. The analytical tool proposed to measure aggregate risks and provide relevant data and insights to managers, is called an Environmental Risk Management Information System, and its mechanics are described in a subsequent section.

West Wallsend No. 2 Colliery is a new mine that is presently being developed in the New- castle Coalfield by J. & A. Brown & Abermain Seaham Collieries Ltd., a subsidiary of Coal & Allied Industries Ltd. It is situated near Barnsley and is some 15 miles by rail from the port of Newcastle. The mine will produce coal from both Bore- hole and Young Wallsend seams. The Borehole seam has a working seam thickness varying from 7 ft to 5 ft while the Young Wallsend seam presents a choice of two distinct working thick- nesses, i.e. 5 ft. or 8 ft, the upper 3 ft containing much high ash material. The inter- seam interval varies from 10 ft on the western edge of the area to more than 70 ft in the central portion. The Borehole seam lies at a depth varying from 550 ft to 750 ft and the overlying surface terrain is gently undulating bushland with limited surface development.

Field instrumentation was installed to monitor ground and lining behaviour during and after construction of the Mount Shaughnessy Tunnel (Rogers Pass Short Tunnel) in Canada. The instrumentation was placed in a soft ground section of the tunnel at its crossing with the Trans Canada Highway. The tunnel was excavated through a dense bouldery soil. Presentation of the field data and inter- pretation of the tunnel performance from a geological-geotechnical point of view form the basis of this paper. The loss of ground due to the tunnel excavation was found to be exceptionally small. This has been attributed to the unusually high strength and stiffness of the host soil. Evaluation using the Boundary Element Method, together with a simplified analytical technique, were applied to assess the relevant soil parameters and their influence on the tunnel performance.

The future of the Tasmanian mineral industry can only be estimated from a knowledge of the past, and armed with this knowledge an orderly plan for the future can be developed. Brief mention is made of the major historical developments through to the present day, with past and future development areas clearly mapped. Areas of importance which have been discussed are divided into the mining of metals, fossil fuels and non-metals; and the process- ing and extractive industries. Discussion then follows on the current general non-insular pressures on the mining industry, the energy crisis, scrap, world shortages, new techniques, inflation, and the effects of exploration on the environment. This is then followed by a discussion of the advantages of Tasmania as a mining state and a cataloguing of the present exploration and some possible areas of future development. From this a suggested plan emerges for the future development of the Tasmanian mineral industry, to incorporate the latest technological advances and by planning to meet the challenge of survival and growth in a turbulent environment.

The R70 test is a good indicator of coal reactivity to oxygen and is commonly used to provide a rating of propensity for self-heating. Tests performed by The University of Queensland Spontaneous Combustion Testing Laboratory have resulted in the development of a large database that shows the impact of coal quality on this parameter. From these results it is possible to infer an R70 value, which can be used to gain an appreciation of the intrinsic coal reactivity before it is even tested. However, any interpretation of R70 values must consider the influences of coal rank, mineral matter and moisture content to provide a better understanding of the spontaneous combustion risk of a particular coal.
