MineSense Technologies Ltd. is revolutionising grade control at mining operations by installing ShovelSense® sensors on buckets that measure the grade of every load before it is dumped in the truck. This allows the mine to exploit grade variations at a resolution that was not available before, reducing the amount of ore loss to the waste stream and removing waste from material destined for processing. These changes dramatically improve the profitability and sustainability of mining operations. ShovelSense relies on X-ray fluorescence analysis of the rocks as they flow in the bucket and is integrated with fleet management to direct the trucks to the right destination. Lab simulations of ShovelSense measurements on porphyry copper ores show correlations between predictions and lab measurements at 0.98 r-squared with a coefficient of variation of 10 per cent. Visualisation of copper grade predictions in three dimensions shows a reasonable match with the dig plan, but with local changes in the ore-waste contact due to more accurate contact identification, related to blast movement and other mining factors. Correct delineation of these contacts ensures ore trucks are not sent to the waste dump and waste trucks are diverted from the crusher, creating enormous value for the operation and the environment.

In a visionary move, the Planning Commission and the Ministry for Planning in Western Australia decided to invite three extractive industry quarry operators, local government councils and State Government departments (Minerals and Energy, Environmental Protection, South West Development Commission) to contribute jointly to study the impacts of blasting on areas surrounding basalt quarries in the Bunbury region of WA. The results of the study will help establish suitable zones in which land uses will be controlled under a proposed Greater Bunbury Region Scheme and in local planning schemes, to minimise conflicting land uses. This paper discusses the blasting program conducted to characterise and model the vibration behaviour of the rock under the effects of pilot-scale and full production blasting, and highlights some of the benefits achievable when a thorough blasting impact program and assessment is conducted at the planning stages of land-use establishment.

Precious metal mineralization at the North Arm goldfield in SE Queensland occurs in the Triassic North Arm Volcanics, a sequence of andesite to rhyolite, pyroclastic and epi- clastic rocks deposited in a continental envir- onment. This unit displays a well-defined fracture system on Landsat imagery, including several arcuate structures which may represent former calderas. Two of the latter are associ- ated with zones of hydrothermal alteration, breccias and anomalous precious and volatile metal values. At the North Arm prospect, alter- ation is zoned from outer propylitic into exten- sive sericitic, although K-feldspar alteration is prevalent in the rhyolite. A zone of advanced argillic alteration is also present at Mt. Ninderry, SSE of North Arm. Alteration involves depletion of Na, Ca and Sr, and vari- able enrichment of S, As, Au, Ag, Hg and Mo. K and Rb are strongly enriched in K-feldspar altered zones. Precious metal mineralization occurs in veins, stockworks and hydrothermal breccia zones, and pervasive low grade Au-Ag dispersion is found throughout the sericitic and K-feldspar altered rocks. Veins and brec- cia interstices contain abundant quartz (common- ly banded), minor pyrite, calcite and sericite, with traces of silver grading to electrum, frei- bergite, naumannite, allargentum, marcasite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Mineralogical and geochemical characteristics are consistent with that found at volcanic-hosted epithermal precious metal deposits, particularly with the low-sulphur/adularia-sericite type.

NASA’s Artemis III mission is expected to return astronauts to the surface to explore and sample the lunar volatiles by 2026. These volatiles are anticipated to provide scientific insights as to how the Moon was created and economic value to off-Earth operations. These same volatiles can pose health implications to astronauts and Earth based personnel handling lunar regolith samples. Using Australian, USA and NASA airborne contaminant exposure limits and the Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) measurements of lunar volatiles in the Cabeus crater ejecta, the minimum mass of lunar regolith that can be safely handled by humans on Earth and in spacecraft can be calculated. This analysis determined a 0.15 grams pure sample of Cabeus crater regolith within a cubic metre of air has enough volatiles to exceed safe working conditions, and 14.9 grams of pure Cabeus crater regolith per cubic metre of air can impact human life. The intent of this analysis is to assist safe handling and exposure calculations for the safe handling procedures of lunar regolith containing volatiles.

Titanium tetrachloride may be reduced to trichloride with hydrogen on a hot tungsten filament and other hot: surfaces. The effect of temperature, time and size of t.he filament on the rate of reaction has been studied. A laboratory unit for preparing a few pounds of trichloride at a time is described. The yield of trichloride is 2·2 - 2·4 gm/sq. cm. of hot surface/hour at 1,000°C. and the energy requirement 3'5-4 kWh/pound of trichloride produced.'INTRODUCTIONThe lower chlorides of titanium (titanium tri- and dichlorides) are amenable to electrolysis, being electrovalent in nature. Furthermore, relative to other oxygen-free titanium salts, they are easy to prepare in a pure state and their use has been investigated to prepare titanium. A blast is designed to completely break competent rock such that it can be economically extracted, and efficiently handled or processed. Efficient breakage of the rock is critical to the success of an operation, and in many operations blast design is optimised to achieve fragmentation, muckpile profiles, and material that is easily excavated. There are inevitably other issues, such as damage to adjacent rock, that should be taken into account when designing a blast to achieve overall optimisation. Some of the key issues with respect to the integrity of the in situ materials adjacent to a blast are identified and briefly discussed in this paper. The potential for damage and the effects of a blast will be strongly influenced by the rock mass properties. This makes it important that site specific conditions and their response to blasting are known. Practical techniques that allow the disturbance adjacent to a blast to be measured with minimum disturbance to operations are described in the paper. Experience shows that, during the blasting process, there is considerable potential to disturb the in situ rock mass adjacent to the blast. In some circumstances a very important objective must be to minimise disturbance outside of the immediate blast area. Measured and observed disturbances caused by blasting to adjacent rock, for various common types of blasting, are discussed in this paper. Blast induced disturbances to the rock mass have been observed in both the near and far fields. These disturbances have the potential to impact on geotechnical design. The geotechnical significance of blast disturbance on a rock mass that is to remain in situ is explored and suggestions with respect to design are given.

A history is given of the dust control techniques developed and applied by the mining companies at Broken Hill. A history of the regeneration works undertaken since 1936 is out- lined. Particular emphasis is placed on the stabilization of mine residue dumps which are located throughout a belt of mining leases in the middle of the city and which began in 1937. The establishment of vegetation for dust control techniques is discussed in detail and a case study is given of the successful revegetation of the sides of a 650 metre long, 350 metre wide and 35 metre high residue dump.

The Australian mining industry, a cornerstone of the nation’s economy, is on a journey towards greater equity and inclusion. Th paper introduces a comprehensive exploration of how universal design principles, stemming from architectural roots, have evolved through automation and digital technology into the more encompassing frameworks of inclusive design and equitable design. The paper proposes a practical framework for those involved in work, facilities and equipment design in the mining industry to identify and assess for equity and inclusion. Universal Design emerged in the 1960s with a primary focus on architecture, aiming to create spaces accessible to people of all abilities. Its foundational principles sought to ensure equitable use, flexibility, simplicity, perceptibility, tolerance for error, low physical effort and optimal spatial considerations. Over time, these principles evolved and expanded beyond physical spaces, finding applications in various fields, including technology, education and transportation. In response to advancements in technology and a growing understanding of the multifaceted nature of diversity, Universal Design evolved into Inclusive Design. Inclusive Design goes further than mere accessibility, considering a broader spectrum of users with varying cognitive, sensory, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. It emphasises user centred design, customisation options, diverse user research and continuous iteration. Equitable Design emerged as a framework that addresses not only the diversity of needs but also systemic disparities. It emphasises fairness, justice and the elimination of structural inequities. Equitable Design encompasses accessibility and affordability, representation and diversity, ethical considerations and community engagement. This paper will explore the applications of these design principles through a series of case studies including village and on-site facilities, remote operations and office based work design and technology design. By applying these frameworks in a mining context, the paper proposes that mining companies and suppliers can improve diversity, equity and inclusion leading to safer, more engaged and productive workplaces.

The Canadian Cordillera contains numerous classic porphyry deposits and several unusual subtypes, including the alkaline suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits and the Tombstone magmatic suite and associated Au¦W deposits. The alkaline suite formed in collisional settings in island arcs whereas the Tombstone suite was emplaced in an active fold and thrust belt in a continental arc. In addtion to different regional settings, these suites differ in the type of underlying basement, metallogeny, and the styles of mineralization. Both magmatic suites were emplaced over short intervals, probably in response to specific tectonic events. In the case of the alkaline suite, the tectonic event promoted magmatic processes suitable for the formation of porphyry Cu-Au deposits. The tectonic environment is less well constrained for the Tombstone suite, but the result was the formation of distinctive porphyry and intrusion-related Au¦W deposits.

Tyre cost at Mount Morgan Limited had been 24% of the truck operating cost. Comprehensive tyre testing resulted in a reduction in tyre costs of about one third. A record of the evaluation techniques may enable the selection of tyres that are most suited to particular conditions. Rubber characteristics, rubber quantity, tyre design, road conditions, dump conditions and inflation pressure were found to be sig- nificant variables. Measurements of tyre temperatures at the breaker strip were used to select the tyre design and inflation pressure required for Mount Morgan Limited's conditions. Relugging of tyres was discontinued as a result of tyre testing.

As a prelude to studying the sorption desorption and permeability behaviour of coal cores in a triaxial stressing rig using sorb- able gases, the air permeability of typical cores was measured. Lump coal samples were obtained from three gas-troubled collieries in Queensland and New South Wales. These were cored in the laboratory and a simple laboratory permeameter employed which accepted 38 x 40 mm cores in a thick rubber sheath. Air pressure of 500 kPa was applied outside the sheath to provide suitable sealing between the rubber and the coal. Differential driving pressures up to 100 kPa were employed and the air flow measured by displacement of water columns in inverted graduated cylinders. Flow measurements accurate to + 2% could thereby be achieved. Coal lumps were cored both parallel and perpen- dicular to the bedding plane, and were observed prior to measurement for any notable features, in particular for the presence of fissures. Between samples an overall variation of from 100 milliDarcy was found in Appin, Westcliff and Leichhardt coals. A forecast of mining conditions in Upper Silesia collieries for the beginning of the 21st century has special focus on average depth of mining, energy of seismic tremors induced by mining and energy of dynamic loads on roadway supports. A method of dynamic loads calculation is based on volume of failed rock surrounding an opening and the seismic energy of tremors anticipated. New types of yielding steel arch supports have been designed to resist massive static and dynamic loads and a system of supports has been tested both on 1 : 10 scale models and in natural size. The support sections used are 29, 36 and 44 kg/m.

Until recently the Corus IJmuiden pellet plant produced approximately 4.5 Mtpa of pellets. Corus IJmuiden is currently running a program to increase its pig iron production to 6.4 million tonnes HM per annum. The burden of the Corus IJmuiden blast furnaces consists of approximately 50 per cent high basicity sinter and 50 per cent acid pellets, both produced in-house. To accommodate the increased pig iron production, the capacity of the pellet plant needed to be increased to 5.0 Mtpa. The productivity was increased by modifications to the plant layout, which were implemented during the 2006 cold maintenance stop. In addition, the composition of the ore blends is optimised to gain productivity.

Magnetite deposits with distinctive ¦ actinolite ¦ apatite -bearing gangue and spatially-extensive sodic-calcic wall rock alteration occur in both Proterozoic metamorphic terrains and Mesozoic-Tertiary magmatic arcs. Examples from both settings constitute significant sources of iron ore (e.g. Kiruna, Sweden; El Romeral, Chile) and some host major Cu-Au deposits that have a local association with K-silicate alteration (e.g. Cloncurry district, NW Queensland; Copiapo district, Chile). A growing body of evidence points to a hydrothermal origin for these systems involving high temperature, low S oxidized fluids. The Cloncurry magnetite-Cu-Au deposits are products of the local structurally channelized influx of a specialized high salinity ore fluid into larger-scale alteration systems developed during pluton emplacement at greater depths than those associated with subvolcanic (porphyry) Cu-Au deposits. The geological characteristics of deposits in magmatic arcs are consistent with a similar mode of origin albeit in rather different tectonic settings.

The Archean geological sequence in the West Pilbara region (Fig 1), a deformed greenstone volcano-sedimentary succession regionally intruded by layered mafic/ultramafic lopoliths, batholithic granites, granite stocks and transected by swarms of dolerite dykes, has prompted several companies to search for a variety of base metals and and platinoids (Fig 2). In the first instance, detailed aeromagnetic surveying was completed, producing patterns of marked magnetic anomalism which proved substantially successful in the demarcation of areas warranting geological reconnaissance and detailed follow-up. Revelant to this paper were the obvious magnetic features overlying outcropping and buried mafic/ultramafic bodies which ultimately were proven to be host to Ni-Cu sulphides, pgm, Ti, V, Cr and, more recently, Ag and Au mineralisation. Routine stream sediment, soil sampling and ground geophysical techniques of the day appear, in most cases, to have been adequate in the detection of mineralisation, except in the case of Radio Hill massive sulphides where the Turam E.M. (1972) signal essentially failed to detect the blind conductor (Peters, de Angelis 1987).

The Pueblo Viejo project in the Dominican Republic installed an innovative sample system on its reverse circulation (RC) drilling rig during commissioning and subsequent commencement of operations. As knowledge of the orebody increased with mining and plant production, cost pressures became apparent that raised questions concerning the continued use of RC drilling versus blasthole sampling for ore control.To justify the continued use of RC drilling for grade control, an in-depth study was undertaken to determine the quality of the sample and prove its value-add to the operation.To investigate the differences in sample quality, a complete bench trial was initiated across both ore pits to compare RC drill results with blasthole assays on a side-by-side basis. The results indicated that based on ore block comparison between RC and blasthole sampling, RC identified an additional 20 per cent of high-grade (+ 4.5 g/t Au) ounces.Previous work indicated that Au, Ag and Cu were all elevated in the drill fines at Pueblo Viejo (Goers and Almond, 2012). This previous test work did not consider the quantity of fines in an RC sample therefore new test work was undertaken to include particle size distribution analyses. This study would determine if the inclusion of fines in the sample was occurring and compare the quantity of fines in the sample against other sample systems and blasthole samples.Comparisons between RC samples and blasthole samples indicate that for the RC samples a range of 30–35 per cent of the sample passed 300 mesh as compared to blastholes where the range of the sample passing 300 mesh was 15–30 per cent.This paper includes a case study on the importance of accurate samples and how they have impacted throughput through the pressure oxidation process plant at Pueblo Viejo. The accurate samples provided by RC allow for improved stockpile and blending strategies, showing the importance of accurate samples to manage risk and create value, against the perception that savings can be made at the risk of poor sampling performance.CITATION:Almond, M and Ventura, L, 2017. The association of specific plants and plant communities with soils developed over underlying superficial orebodies and mineralisation has been long recognised. It has given rise to the use of plant indicators for geobotanical exploration as a regular component of primary minerals reconnaissance where there is an undisturbed vegetation cover. That the chemical composition of indicator plants is a measure of their soil environment has further led to biogeochemical prospecting methods for minerals and its use in the mapping of underlying ore deposits. Where there is a strong surface expression of metal and metalloid anomalies, concentrations of potentially phytotoxic elements may reach a level at which they have strong selective impacts on plant populations. In such circumstances, natural selection has operated in the development of a unique flora composed of plant species and individuals with genetically-based tolerances to the stressed environment in which they continue to survive. These plants are called metallophytes. Metallophytes occur globally on all metalliferous sites, both in pristine undisturbed environments and in areas of mineral workings, ancient and modern. However, the best-developed primary metallophyte vegetation is found in the most ancient areas where there has been a long-term evolutionary impact of the underlying geology through ore weathering and dispersion of metals into the rhizosphere zone. Natural selection of metal-tolerant races of plants in these largely undisturbed areas can eventually lead to speciation and the development of an endemic regional metallophyte flora (Baker et al , 2010). Mineral wastes resulting from mining activities also allow colonisation by metal-tolerant individuals leading to the establishment of metallophyte communities. The distribution and extent of such communities is determined by regional and local factors relating to climate and substrate conditions and the availability of suitable plant resources on which natural selection can operate (Baker, 2009).The ability of metallophytes to tolerate extreme metal concentrations commends them as the optimal choice for ecological restoration of mineral wastes and metal-contaminated sites. Metallophytes have recently also spawned several novel phytotechnologies, including phytoremediation and phytomining (Chaney et al, 2000, 2005; Baker and Whiting, 2008). Action towards conserving the global metallophyte resource base is imperative because many species are under threat of extinction from new and extensive mining activities (Whiting et al, 2004). This has been identified as a priority in the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) Project of the Global Mining Initiative in 2002 but positive responses from the minerals industry have been slow. The last decade has, however, seen an ever-increasing interest in metal-tolerant and metal-accumulating plants, both from an academic standpoint and their use in revegetation and phytostabilisation (Tordoff et al, 2000; Baker and Whiting, 2008; Baker, 2009). Few studies have highlighted the need to conserve and develop these unique plants (Whiting et al , 2004). This presentation identifies future research needs for the conservation and exploitation of the global metallophyte biodiversity and its potential in sustainable mine closure. The sizing of a starter dam for a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) involves balancing many competing demands. It should cost as little as possible, be high enough to store tailings until the first raise can be constructed, it must be able to contain water safely, and it must be designed in such a way that the long-term integrity of the higher raises are not compromised, among other things. In addition to these demands there is the complication of the behaviour of the process plant, and the tailings during commissioning. Variations in slurry density, excess water in the TSF, initial settled density of the tailings, reliability issues, and beach slopes above and below water can all impact the way the tailings beaches are developed and ultimately impact the ability of the starter dyke to contain the required volume of tailings and water.The conventional approach to the design of a TSF starter dyke is to begin looking at the elevation required for a set of deterministic design parameters, find ways to reduce the size or volume of it as much as possible to reduce cost, and then possibly look at the sensitivity of some of the input parameters. This paper discusses a stochastic modelling approach for starter dykes that allows a wide range of design inputs to be simulated quickly, with an envelope of possible results produced. The sensitivity to different parameters can also be examined to understand which design inputs have the biggest impact on the required dyke sizing. By integrating the 3D TSF modelling tool Muk3D with GoldSim, it will be demonstrated how a wide range of scenarios can be evaluated and how that information can be used to make better decisions about the selection of design options.CITATION:Cooper, C A and Suter, G A, 2018. Tailings dams constructed by the upstream method have traditionally been built using the sand fraction of the tailings, which has automatically provided a relatively permeable embankment material, and helped provide the necessary drainage conditions which are a pre-requisite for safe and stable dam construction using this method. This paper discusses some recent trends which have resulted in proposals to use impermeable material in place of the sand fraction as the embankment material, both for the starter dam, and subsequent lifts. The consequences of these types of decisions on the overall stability of the dam are illustrated, and the need for continued monitoring of pore pressures in the tailings as the dam is raised is emphasised.

Mengzi Mining and Metallurgy Co, Ltd (MMMC) polymetallic ore contains recoverable amounts of tin, lead, zinc, pyrite and other valuable minerals. With the change in orebody, the run-of-mine (ROM) ore changed from lead zinc rich ore to tin rich ore, where the current ROM ore contains 0.45–1.25 per cent tin, 20–25 per cent sulfur, and 0.20–0.35 per cent copper. The previous processing flow sheet was designed to recover lead zinc rich ore and it is clearly not suitable for recovery of the current tin rich ore, where the tin was already overground and tin recovery was only 50.19 per cent. The Mengzi Mining Company has recently modified the concentrator circuit by incorporating rod mill and high efficient Derrick fine screen. As a result of the improved classification efficiency, the overgrinding of the tin ore was minimised and the recovery of tin was improved by 20.71 per cent, ie from 50.19–70.90 per cent.
