WMC Limited, owner/operator of Olympic Dam, the worldÆs largest underground uranium mine and the fourth largest underground copper mine has now completed an expansion that has been classed as a benchmark in the mining industry. To achieve a production increase from 3.4 to 9.25 Mtpa from an underground mining operation in two years was a major challenge, it was essential to review the overall materials handling system from æthe face to the stockpileÆ. The challenge was two-fold:How to deliver 30 000 tonne of ore per day to the processing plant, from a single underground mine? To provide the processing plant with a consistent metallurgical feed. This paper traces the transformation from the old to the new materials handling system at Olympic Dam.

The prevention of fatal risks is a key objective for the global resources industry, especially considering poor performance with regard to fatality rate reduction and the continued occurrence of mine disasters globally. However, the industry has a credible history, over several decades, of the development and deployment management systems to control potential Serious Injury, Fatal and Catastrophic (P-SIFC) risks. While these systems have had a significant impact on the thinking and approaches to the prevention of fatal risks, fatal accident rates have not shown the desired reduction. Recent fatal and serious injury events in Australia have led to the establishment of several enquiries to further identify improvements that could be considered. Globally, fatal accident rates remain stubbornly high or plateaued in many jurisdictions, and several catastrophic events have occurred, such as tailing dams disasters in Brazil and South Africa, and the recent coalmine disaster in Turkey. Apart from the apparent lack of progress, it is evident that the deployment of critical risk systems has introduced more bureaucracy, slower response systems and additional burdens on already overloaded middle and supervisory levels of management. Organisations are rarely able to effectively tap into the risk source of risk knowledge of the frontline worker and supervisor, for various reasons discussed in this paper. To establish a valid and valuable channel of critical risk information flow from the frontline employee, Debmarine Namibia instigated the development and deployment of a system called SafeSENTRY, where the focus is on the ‘dynamic identification of dynamic risks’. This paper outlines the system, the principles of the design, the range of risk metrics that can be derived from the observations of the frontline operators, and demonstrates how a range of posited shortcomings in critical risk management is addressed how features of the High Reliability Organization (HRO) have been developed.

The large, high grade 3000 and 3500 copper orebodies at Mount Isa lie greater than 1200 m below the surface, and partly beneath the silver-lead-zinc mining operations at the Isa Mine.Since discovery over 30 years ago, the primary data acquisition programs have been integrated with long-term copper production strategies. These potentially sizeable and distinctly separate accumulations of copper mineralisation are the only sources capable of supplementing a decline in output from the 1100 orebody in the 1990s. Within a decade these deeper copper orebodies will become the major source of copper ore.

The reliable estimation of ore reserves in mineral sand deposits depends on drilling methods and assay techniques that have been specially developed within the industry. Improvement of these techniques is a continuing process, as variations within and between deposits are highlighted during the actual mining operation. Constant monitoring of metallurgical losses along with mineral production allows comparison of mineral tonnages accounted for by mining, with original calculated reserves. A review of ore reserves in the Jerusalem Creek field from scout drilling in the sixties, through mining in the seventies, shows the progression from understatement prior to mining, to the present when more than two thirds of the reserves have been depleted.

Currently there are in excess of 200 companies listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange and the total market value of all the listed shares amounts to $4.6 billion. The number of listed mining companies stands at nine and with a market value of $35 million accounts for less than one per cent of the total market capitalisation. In comparison, the Australian mining and energy sectors account for nearly 50 per cent of the total market capitalisation, which currently exceeds A$41 billion. Surprisingly the share markets in both countries were primarily founded on the discoveries of minerals last century.

The investigation of the explosion characteristics of nine Bowen Basin (Central Queensland) dust samples in a suitable coal dust explosion chamber using a new dust concentration probe provides several advances in the area of coal dust explosibility testing. The 20 litre explosion chamber, of novel design, uses rotation of the main body of the chamber together with air jets for dust dispersion, and allows testing of different types of explosion initiators and analysis of the explosion characteristics of coal dust/methane mixtures of varying concentrations.A new development was a dielectric dust probe for the measurement of coal dust concentration. A capacitive micrometry technique was successfully adapted to measure dust concentration. The system uses a ratio-transformer bridge for measurement of small changes in a capacitive probe designed to sample a representative volume. The device is accurate, and is capable of operating in the hostile environment within the explosion chamber.The explosion chamber and dust probe characterise the explosive potential of coal dust samples by determination of the dust lean limit concentration in varying mixture with methane. Plots of lean limit points obtained in this way present an explosion curve for each sample which indicates the potential of the coal dust/methane to explode under the conditions of initiation in the chamber. The explosion curve obtained for each sample presents a unique signature that appears to reflect the physical and chemical characteristics of the dust.The results from this series of laboratory experiments appear to provide a useful index and indicate potential areas of interest for future research.

A pilot plant study has been made of the liberation characteristics of a nickel ore under different milling conditions. A series of runs were made ranging from fully autogenous grinding to semi-autogenous grinding with a ball load of 8%. The mill products were sized and assayed then analysed by QEM4SEM. This enabled a full liberation analysis to be carried out to see whether the autogenous grinding leads to improved liberation by promoting selective breakage. Though it is frequently claimed that fully autogenous grinding yields superior liberation this could not be detected in the present study.

The application of modern sciences prior to nineteenseventies have resulted in the placing of Continental Drift theory into broader concept of Plate Tectonics. The concept is applied to explain the Cenozoic Tectonics of North Sumatera.Oceanic crust flooring the Indian Ocean is moving northeasterly and being obliquely subducted at a Benioff zone along the western margin of Asian Plate, marked by the Sunda Trench in the west coast of Sumatera. This phenomenon was generated since late Mesozoic, continued during Cenozoic era up to present day, resulted an exellent example of arc-trench system which can be traced along SW - NE transect of North Sumatera.The oblique-subducting plate of Indian Ocean beneath Asian Plate, together with spreading of Andaman seafloor beginning in Pliocen epoch, have led to the origin of Sumateran Fault System; the System extends throughout the length of Sumatera island. In the region under review it comprises almost contiguous set of broadly SE-trending. Evidences for transcurent-dextral displacement have been observed.

Veolia Water Technologies was contracted by a global coal mining company to design a retrofit acid mine drainage treatment facility using DenseSludge™ technology on a former coal refuse disposal site. The project constraint was to reuse current facilities in order to reduce additional capital work cost and avoid additional footprint requirements while improving treatment performance and reducing sludge production and chemical consumption. The initial installation of 454 m3/h served as a pilot plant to demonstrate the benefits of the process and ultimately provided design criteria for the new facility. The pilot demonstrated the benefit of the technology by reducing sludge volume by 90 per cent compared to conventional processes currently in use. The sludge that is reinjected into the mine contains less water, which reduces the volume of water that returns to the mine pool for treatment and mine water balance. Furthermore, the pilot plant reduced lime usage compared to conventional processes by operating at a lower pH set point, demonstrating steady pH control and stoichiometric lime utilisation.CITATION:Dube, C and Banerjee, K, 2015. Raise drilling (or raise boring) is not a new technology or methodology. The first raise drilling machine was developed by The Robbins Company (TRC) of the USA in 1962. TRC manufactured the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) in 1952 and Jim Robbins, the founder of the company wanted to ‘turn the TBM concept on its head’ so to speak.Many improvements have ensued in the 50 years since the first machine. Such improvements include advances in the drill rod and thread design, cutters and reaming heads. Raise boring would not have been possible without the development of the tungsten carbide insert cutters and there have been big advances in both the carbide technology and in the mechanical design of the cutters.Over time mines have developed deeper with a greater use of diesel equipment resulting in greater ventilation requirements. This in turn means larger and deeper ventilation shafts. There have also been improvements in directional drilling techniques. This all combines with the need and ability to construct larger shafts using the safe method of raise drilling. With suitable geotechnical conditions the RBR900VF is capable of drilling shafts to a diameter and depth of greater than 8 m and 2000 m respectively. Greater diameters are possible over shorter lengths with suitable ground conditions.The RBR900VF was designed and manufactured to specifications developed by Macmahon. This machine has the greatest thrust and torque capability of any machine in the world. It enables cutters to be more heavily loaded in the larger diameter heads and this is essential for efficient rock excavation. Additional features of the new machine include minimal manual handling to provide a safer working environment and higher strength steel for the drill rods providing additional safety margin.CITATION:Wood, R J, 2014. The EnvIRONment process has been developed to treat steel works dust and organic wastes simultaneously. A pelletised feed is fed into a special DC electric furnace, the pellets becoming immersed in a molten slag above a carbon saturated bath. The iron oxide in the pellets is reduced and carburised whilst the organics are broken down to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and water vapour. Volatile metals are vapourised and collected in the baghouse. Over two years of trials in a 100 kg DC electric are furnace has brought the process to the stage where it is ready for commercialisation.

The State Electricity Commission of Victoria is Australia's largest single coal producer. Approximately 19 Mt of coal will be produced in 1989 from the SEC V's newest mine, Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC), which com- menced overburden stripping operation in October 1982. When the adja- cent Loy Yang Power Station is completed in the late 1990's, LYOC will supply between 35 to 45 Mt/a, depending on power station performance and demand of coal for non-power generation uses. LYOC has been a major challenge for the SECV. It is the biggest single open pit coal mining development undertaken in Australia, with a whole of life capital cost approaching A$1 billion. The mine has supplied a very rapidly growing demand for coal from the expanding power station while developing in breadth, length and depth. Coal demand has consistently been above the figures anticipated during the initial planning because of the substantially improved performance of the 500 MW units of the Loy Yang A Power Station. The superior performance of the LYOC and power station has generated additional electrical energy during the first 5 years of power station operation compared with the initial planning targets- at almost no additional capital cost. This has been a major benefit to the SECV. LYOC will continue to present major challenges for the SECV, particularly in achieving overburden removal and coal reserve targets as development of the open cut continues to full depth over the next 15 years.

An investigation was performed to determine the sequence of events which caused the 1987 surface subsidence and related damage to several homes in Walker County, Alabama, USA (see Figure 1). Surface affects compared to mine maps indicated the subsidence to be mine related. However, two coal seams had been worked under this area. The upper seam, the American seam ranged from 250 to 280 feet beneath the surface in the area in question. It was mined-out before 1955 by room-and-pillar method leaving in place narrow-long pillars to support the overburden strata, and abandoned in 1955. The lower seam, the Mary Lee seam, ranged from 650 to 700 feet beneath the surface. The Mary Lee seam had been abandoned in 1966 and subsequently became flooded. The dewatering of the Mary Lee seam workings in 1986 caused the submerged pillars to be exposed to the atmosphere. Due to multiple seam mining and the fact that workings had been inundated then dewatered, a subsurface investigation ensued to determine the sequence and ultimate cause of surface subsidence. Core sample tests with fracture analysis in conjunction with "down-the-hole" TV camera inspections provided necessary information to determine that the subsidence started in the lower seam and progressed through the upper coal seam to the surface. Evidence from the investigation program established that dewatering of the lower seam workings caused the marginally stable support pillars and the roof to collapse. This failure triggered additional subsidence in the upper seam which broadened the area of the influence at the surface.

Results of experiments for dissolution of zinc by aeration of sphalerite in glass, copper, galvanised iron and stainless steel vessels of identical dimensions are reported. It was found that in a glass container dissolution of zinc reaches a maximum after 30 min aeration and then decreases whereas in the copper container dissolution remains nearly unchanged up to 30 min aeration and then increases. In the cases of galvanised iron and stainless steel containers zinc dissolution increased steadily with time up to 60 min aeration. It is suggested that the different rates of dissolution in glass and copper containers may be due to electro-chemical actions.

Zinc-bearing materials containing chlorides and fluorides of alkali metals, such as electric arc furnace dusts, Waelz oxides, galvanising ashes, brass foundry and converter fumes are marginally attractive, both technically and economically, for processing by the Imperial Smelting Process or in a conventional zinc sulphate electrolytic plant. The EZINEX« Process allows the recovery of high purity zinc in cathode form from these materials, together with regeneration of the leach liquor. The process is based on a new electrochemical system which depolarises the anode reaction with reduction of the cell voltage, compared with the traditional sulphate electrolysis method. The electrolyte, based on a chloroammino complex, permits the recovery of other valuable metals present in the zinc bearing materials such as lead, copper and silver. These are recovered as a metallic cement, consequently improving the economics of the process.

So I asked the driver, where did they get that name? `Oh,' he said, `from some people who built a house there. That was it's name- Duntroon.' It strikes a note with me because, that's the name of a 12th century castle on the west coast of Scotland where I spend what leisure hours I have and, therefore, it establishes the long connection between Australia and my native land. There is also a story I should tell you about the oil industry and its upsurge in Scotland recently which has resulted in great prosperity. And in Edinburgh, the walls of the banks are bulging-because of the incursion of foreign exchange and other resources.

Routine, in-pit geological mapping of highwall at Central Queensland Coal Associates (C.O.C.A.) deep strip mines has proved too slow for the increasingly greater highwall lengths which require mapping. This realiz- ation has encouraged the search for faster mapping methods and after trial of ground photographic methods has resulted in the adoption of interpretive mapping off stereo cover, oblique -- aerial photography. This entails using a Cessna 182 light aircraft flying at its slowest speed, the aerial meth- od finally employed consisting of two Vinten, air reconnaissance cameras mounted in parallel and simultaneously taking both colour and black and white photographs of the mine high- wall. The respective 1:500 scale enlargements produced from the 70mm format films combine to present the sharpest resolution attainable under the field conditions pertaining and such information on weathered material as only colour photography can fully render. Total costs for the aerial photography method are estimated to be about the same as those for conventional in-pit mapping. Whilst total costs are comparable, geo- logist's time for mapping a 10 km. length is reduced to less than half that for in-pit mapping (for Stage 1, fully accurate mapping) and accuracy and detail are greatly improved. The maximum gas emission into underground workings can be predicted by the use of established methods which have world wide recognition. Changes in gas emission and the influence of the gas and geological environments during longwall mining at Pacific Colliery, were found.to be a typical. The relationship between longwall mining and gassy conditions is found to vary from the European experience because of the different mining and geological conditions encountered, and the higher productivity achieved, by single longwall panels in Australia.

BHP's newest colliery on the Southern Coalfield Is Tower Colliery. It is situated near Wilton some 60 kms south west from Sydney. It commenced its operations in 1978 and since that time has experienced considerable roof problems. In its eight years of operations, production has been 936 687 tonnes to December 1985. To a certain extent this is a reflection of the ground control r,,b1cros present in the colliery. paper out Iines the signif mt g,, logical features that are known to exist in the colliery and their influence on roadway development. Faulting has hindered the mine's development and an igneous intrusion has had outhursting associated with it. The prevailing roof rock has also had an impact on the roadway conditions. The paper will look at intersection deformation in present workings. Extensometers have been installed in these areas and provide measurements to verify visual observations. The results show a significant increase in roof movement as the roadway is developed from a single heading, to a T-intersection and then Into a four-way intersection.
