A knowledge of the value of the activity coefficient of cobalt oxide in slag as a function of composition and temperature is necessary if effective strategies are to be devised to maximise the recovery of cobalt in nonferrous smelting processes. This work reviews previous studies and shows that comparison and evaluation of the results is hampered by variations in the choice of standard states for the species. Published results have been recalculated to a common set of standard states with a preferred value for the Gibbs free energy of formation of cobalt oxide. It has been shown that the value of the activity coefficient of cobalt oxide referred to the solid standard state in iron silicate slags is approximately two, at temperatures from 1523 to 1623¦K. It is suggested that some contradictory results are most likely due to errors in the measured partial pressure of oxygen.

Variations in delay timing can have a marked influence on blasting effectiveness and, hence, on total production costs. In single-row bench blasts, delay firing is invariably more effective than simultaneous initiation. In single-row delayed blasts, there is an optimum inter-hole delay above and below which inferior blasting results are obtained. This optimum delay is equal to the time required for each charge to just effectively detach its quota of the burden. The inter-hole delay should seldom be less than 4 ms.m-l of burden.In multi-row blasts in which holes in a given effective row are fired on the same delay, the entire burden on any effective row should be detached from the rock mass just before charges in the next effeotive row detonate. Delays shorter than this give inferior blasting results and an increased likelihood of environmental and slope stability problems. If the inter-row delay is too long, cut-offs can occur, especially where the delay unit is located outside the blasthole. For a surface delay system, the optimum inter-row delay usually varies between 4 ms.m-l and 8 ms.m-l of effective burden. The number of rows that can be fired effectively with surface delay systems (in a single blast) is limited by the threat of cut-offs. Greater interrow delays and a larger number of rows per blast can be fired to advantage with down-the-hole delay systems.There are practical limits to the timing accuracy of all available delay systems. The existence of delay time variability should be recognized and duly considered in the design of blasts.The relationship between delay timing and blasting vibrations is not discussed.

Downer’s mining division has made an operational and financial commitment to developing engineered solutions that mitigate the risks associated with operator proximity to uncontrolled development drill boom movements, and unguarded rotating drill steels.With the potential for serious injury or fatality, these identified risks are categorised as critical. Previous attempts by the industry to engineer them out have produced limited success, with numerous incidents still occurring year on year. Ultimately, the industry (as a whole) remains reliant on procedural prevention for operator safety.Downer understood the success of such an initiative would largely depend on the effective collaboration between operational experience, technology experts and automation. With so many variables requiring consideration; such as physical operator movement, machine boom movements, variable machine positions, and underground environmental impacts – challenging traditional technologies was necessary to deliver an optimal solution.For that reason, discrete detection (similar to laser curtains or beams) was considered not fit for purpose. The use of situational mapping, using rotating lasers, however, provided the optimal solution. The lasers collect data that is then processed using a custom software application.The software application is specifically programmed for tracking and classifying objects within detection zones, using advanced algorithms and filtering. Recognition and removal of non-positive disturbances are possible without losing personnel detection capability. The detection of relevant classified objects (humans) is determined by analysis of object size, age, movement, and speed etc. When the relevant object is detected, an alarm and inhibit function is applied preventing drilling functions.Any breach of the safety zone (forward of the front jacks) will automatically disable the hydraulic boom function. This can only be reset in the cabin once the person or persons have returned past the front jacks of the development drill into the safety zone.Downer, in collaboration with partner YUMARR Automation, has successfully developed this reliable boom isolation system, and is called JumboGuard. The small scale alluvial gold mining industry in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is c.irrently the only form of small scale mining carried out in this country. It already contributes significantly to the economy with current production estimated at 2 000-2 500kg per year. Until recently, small scale alluvial gold mining has been confined to simple panning and sluicing of high grade alluvial and colluvial deposits. Traditionally the small scale miner in PNG has only worked gravels with gold grades in excess of 500mg/m3. Grades of this order are required to justify the hard physical labour involved ~n hand operated small scale mining methods. .he introduction of higher throughput technologies such as trommels fed by hydraulic excavators has the effect of altering what constitutes an economically viable deposit. Mechanised techniques allow for the consideration of grades of almost half that level. The potential and opportunities for utilising this type of small scale mechanised mining in PNG are enormous with large areas of ground with gold grades running in excess of 250mg/m3 and often up to 2000mg/m3 throughout the country. An assessment of the current operating economics of this technology in the PNG context is the principal objective of this paper. Small to medium scale mechanised mining can potentially contribute significantly to the PNG economy particularly as it lies within the react-, of many PNG businessmen. Its potential is currently somewhat limited by a general lack of infrastructure and is also constrained by socio-political factors.

Some 50 miles of tunnel have been driven in the Snowy Mountains Area since tunnelling commenced in 1951. Hates have improved progressively due to the know-how of American supervision and use of large matched equipment of modern design.The work has been carried out by contractors, working almost exclusively under schedule of rates contracts. The Authority has maintained active research into tunnelling problems, especially that of support, and this has resulted in considerable economies and improved rates of progress. The contractors also have sought economies both by management and equipment techniques. Ammonium nitrate came into favour as an explosive essentially because of its lower cost, and handling techniques have improved progressively. Rock conditions preclude use of the "Mole" type equipment in its present stage of development, but one contractor introduced the "sliding floor" and this could exert a great influence on future tunnelling methods.Examination of tunnels that have been in service for some time confirmed the quality of the work and endorsed the policy of continued research and development.GENEHALThe Snowy Mountains Scheme provides for the diversion of the Snowy and Eucumbene waters through two transmountain tunnels to the western river systems. These diversions, together with additional regulations provided for waters already flowing inland, will provide an average additional discharge of 1,818,000 ac it per year for irrigation.Furthermore, approximately 6,000 million kWh of electrical energy will be generated annually in power stations with a total installed capacity of some 3,000,000 kW (Fig. 1.).INVESTIGATIONThe aim of investigation work is firstly to collect sufficient information to allow the overall scheme to be planned and then to follow up with detailed information on eachproject. This paper describes new research and development currently being undertaken by the CSIRO Mining Technology Group to advance the automation capability of continuous mining equipment in underground coal mining operations. The effort aims at increasing the overall rate of roadway development as well as providing a safer working environment for underground mine personnel. The activity is funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and forms part of a larger underground development initiative, known as the CM2010 project. The CM2010 is managed via a consortium of leading mining industry representatives through the Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG). The Task Group has identified three research areas requiring new development in order to realise the CM2010 project objectives: self-guiding (autonomous) continuous miner capability, an enhanced drilling and bolting process and improved mesh deployment. CSIRO's primary role in the CM2010 project is in the development of the autonomous continuous miner guidance capability.This paper reports on outcomes achieved at the half-way mark of a three year research and development project. It details the technical developments undertaken towards demonstration of a 'self-steering' capability to enable a continuous miner to automatically maintain a given mining heading and mining horizon under production conditions. A primary technical requirement of this automated functionality is the means to accurately determine both the location and orientation of the continuous miner in real-time. Testing and validation of the guidance system solution has been implemented using a combination of an instrumentation-grade inertial navigation unit and radar technology. Comprehensive performance evaluations have been conducted using a scale skid-steer mobility platform known as the Phoenix. Results achieved to the present stage of the project are highly promising and suggest that an automated self-steering functionality is achievable under production conditions. This new outcome represents an important move towards implementing a step change improvement for future underground roadway development.

Ensuring the success of a major resource development project, whether in the Gippsland Basin or elsewhere, is typically both a complex and costly process. It is therefore imperative from the point of view of the proponents of such a project - and in particular the financiers - that everything possible be done to minimise administrative confusion and delay in the establishment phase of the project, and to put systems in place which enable the project to run smoothly and efficiently in the later stages of its development and operation. An essential element in this process is ensuring that the project management is able to come to terms with and deal effectively with the relevant planning and environmental laws.

The adsorptive and granulate forming MetClean™ process has been used at many locations in Northern Sweden, Norway, Denmark, France, Spain, Mongolia, Japan and Australia. It has been pilot tested and used in full scale treatment plants to remove metals from:mine watersleachate from solid waste in incineration flue gasleachate from fly ash damsleachate from landfill and waste ponds.The following paper provides details of pilot and plants tests on the effectiveness of MetClean™ in removing arsenic, antimony, barium, cadmium, copper, molybdenum, nickel, radium, uranium, vanadium and zinc. Results show that MetClean™ may reduce the concentration of these metals in treated effluent water to the one part per billion (ppb) range.The paper also finds that, for specific metals, the optimal adsorption condition depends on the:pH levelmolar relation between the specific targeted metal and the addition of iron (II) or manganese (II)type of oxidation agentssalinity levelpresence of other metals.The most effective pH level varies according to the targeted metal but falls within the pH 5 to pH 11 range. A compromise pH level may be set when more than one metal is targeted for removal at the same time and through only one process step. The removal efficiency of one or both metals may be affected by operating at a compromise rather than optimum pH level.The MetClean process generates non-hazardous solid waste. IT is not intended that this paper should be regarded as an account of the geology of the Lyell district. It is merely a synopsis of some of the conclusions recently arrived at in regard to the stratigraphic and structural geology, compiled to act as a guide to those members of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy attending the Queenstown meeting who are interested in economic geology. The attempt has been made to present certain salient features, omitting a mass of detail, which, although important in the complete investigation and understanding of the economic geology, yet would be confusing to a group of geologists making a short visit. Newmont Waihi Operations is participating in the initiation of a community liaison forum in association with the local district council. The objective is to provide a forum for the free and regular exchange of ideas, concerns and information, and through improved communication seek to achieve a more comprehensive set of solutions to community, operating and closure issues associated with Martha Mine. A similar liaison forum has been operated on two previous occasions during earlier phases of the present mine's operation. This paper deals with the practical aspects of setting up a liaison forum to act as an effective conduit between regulators, mine operators, local businesses and the community. The mechanisms and procedures for identifying community issues and concerns are dealt with. The actions and structures required to ensure effective ongoing community 'buy in' at all levels are discussed. Corporate philosophies are addressed. Specific examples from Martha Mine, Waihi New Zealand will be used to illustrate the paper. This will include a brief explanation of previous and current community issues, Newmont Waihi's operations both at Martha Mine and the proposed Favona underground mine, and the practical issues involved in setting up a liaison forum.

The oxidation of ferrous sulphate to ferric sulphate with air and oxygen in a gas lift percolator was investigated with initial Fe2+ concentrations in the range 0·01 M to 1·0 M,temperatures in the range 20-80°C, and pH in the range oto 2.The rate of formation of Fe3+ was found to be well described by the rate expressionEquation 1and a consistent mechanism is proposed.The presence of Cu2+ was found to cause an increased rate of oxidation, the effect being greater with Cu2+ concentrations increasing in the range 0·001 M - 0·01 M in 0·2 M Fe2+. The effect of other solutes containing Ni, Zn, Mn, Co, Hg, Cl, Mo, NH4, As, Cr, or Na at a concentration of 0·001 M in 0·2 M Fe2+ was negligible.

IN the underground department of a mine, we may fairly say that "good management is based upon three elementals: first, sound engineering; second, proper coordination and efficiency of every human unit; third, economy in the purchase and consumption: of supplies.This paper is practically an analysis of the second element; which stands out prominently as the most important in the winning of successful results. The human units are divided into officers and men. The officers intermesh. One man takes responsibility where another throws it down; incessantly new conditions are arising where they may be doubtful of their powers; and always, on account of the three shifts, varying methods of work are coming into conflict. This very often results in disorganization. What is most necessary to guard against this is an esprit de corps, which would influence officers to stifle personal feelings for the general welfare of the department, To secure co-operation and loyalty of the staff, the writer recommends for the mines of the field a system of profit-sharing. TheSouthern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand are currently rising rapidly as a consequence of continental collision along the Pacific-Australian plate boundary. Rapid uplift has resulted in a major thermal anomaly in the shallow crust beneath the alps. Alpine topography and associated intense precipitation, coupled with the thermal anomaly are responsible for vigorous combined topographic/convective circulation of water through the shallow crust.   Uplift is greatest in a wedge-shaped region between the Alpine Fault and an associated second-order backthrust system, the Main Divide Fault Zone, approximately 20 km to the east. The Main Divide Fault Zone is segmented into NNE and NE striking faults, which are regionally sub-parallel to the Alpine Fault, but dip northwest in the opposite direction. Reverse oblique-slip on the Main Divide Fault is in an easterly direction, with a greater component of strike-slip movement on the NE trending faults. Elevated topography in the Mt Cook region is related to thrusting of a relatively homoclinal sequence of semi-schistose rocks on top of lower-grade greywacke, which controls the position of the Main Divide. Tectonically induced fluid flow resulted in only minor alteration and hydrothermal mineralisation of fault-rocks in Alpine and Main Divide Faults, and localised deposition of quartz and/or carbonate in the immediate hangingwall.   The wedge between the Alpine and Main Divide Faults is segmented by third-order structures north of the Mount Cook region. A series of right-lateral (-085/700S) and left-lateral (-150/600SW) faults, which are synthetic and antithetic to the Alpine Fault, respectively, developed as a conjugate set during uplift. Fluid-flow in the Southern Alps is controlled by these third-order fault/fracture systems. Cu-Au mineralisation, hydrothermal veins, and surface hot spring activity are localised by third-order fault/fractures and appears to be enhanced where conjugates intersect.

The use of carbide tipped integral drill steels and detachable bits is discussed in relation to the means of drilling or cutting employed. It is stressed that only by correct use can the full value of these tools be realised.Factors affecting carbide quality, the design of shanking steels and the requirements and techniques of brazing in inserts are considered.It is essential that the brazed jointing between carbide and steel be strong but ductile. The methods used for the manufacture of carbide tipped tools are briefly outlined.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years the application of tungsten carbide to various mining tools in the mining industry, has developed to the stage where it is now regarded as an essential item in the production of coal and metal ores. In fact it is claimed that certain mining operations would not be possible if it were not for the benefits obtainable from the characteristic properties of tungsten carbide. The advantages of this hardmetal have, to some extent, influenced manufacturers to revise design specifiations of some machines, while againsome machines have actually been designed with tungsten carbide as their basic medium for operation.In general the applications fall into the following three categories:(a) Drilling hard rock by percussive means.(b) Drilling soft rock and coal by rotary means.(c) Coal cuttingThis paper is concerned with tungsten carbide tools associated with these three activities in Australia, the effectiveness of their application and significant points in their design and manufacture.

A study was made of zircon powders bonded with phosphoric acid or aluminium orthophosphate. The influence of strength of solution of the phosphatic binders on the modulus of rupture over a temperature range was investigated. Physical properties of three grades of zircon powder bonded with phosphatic binders were studied at various temperatures. Examination of x-ray diffraction data indicated that phosphates ofzirconia are preferentially formed to phosphates of silica. However, zircon in the presence of excess phosphoric acid also forms phosphates of silica upon heating.Resistance to attack by slags from blast and open hearth furnaces was determined on phosphate-bonded zircon mortars in a cup test with industrially made ladle bricks. Zircon powders bonded with phosphates proved to have high P.C.E. values. The first satisfactory results of a plant trial with phosphate-bonded zircon mortar, used in a steel ladle, are now being assessed in larger scale industrial tests prior to accepting the mortar as a steel plant refractory.

This paper is intended to give a general review of current gold extraction technology for free-milling or non-refractory auriferous ores. Fundamental process concepts and some of the differences between the current technologies is referred to. Typical flowsheets and layouts are provided and it is demonstrated that technology for extracting free-milling gold is relatively simple. For environmentally sensitive areas such as encountered in New Zealand relevant cyanide decay and destruction technology is also discussed. Brief mention is made of some likely future innovations. Finally reference is made of New Zealand's previous significant contribution to gold extraction technology. These contributions were pioneering ranging from the cyanide leaching of gold to adsorption by carbon and precipitation by zinc. New Zealand has not allowed its potential gold projects to develop at a rate commensurate with the rest of the world thereby stifling its renowned innovative approach in this technology. It is time for New Zealand mining to recognise its unique opportunities in developing gold extraction technology and again take a rightful place in leading the way.

The object of this paper is to give a description of the new office and changehouse building and equipment at the Zinc Corporation Limited, the office section of which has now been in full use for approximately three years, and the changehouse section for approximately two years. As the expectations of the design have been fully realized, it is thought that this description will be of interest to members and possibly of some use to others faced with similar problems.GENERALIn the centralization of the surface plant around the new main shaft the combined office and changehouse building forms a prominent feature, being located between the shaft and the mill and facing the workshops on the northern side.The scheme for housing all employees in one building was proposed by the Manager, Mr. A. J. Keast, who was familiar with a similar successful structure built at the McIntyre Porcupine Mines Ltd. in Ontario, Canada.The principal features of this building were adopted as a basis for design, and the present layout evolved to suit the particular requirements of this mine.Some of the advantages of the design are:(a) Economy in first cost and space occupied when compared with plants having separate office and changehouse buildings.(b) Easier and more constant supervision of employees and of the plant by the senior staff members.(c) Close contact between officials of all departments.(d) Close covered connection between changehouse and shaft.(e) Avoidance of duplication of ,essential services such as electric power, water, heating plant, sewerage, etc.The Managing Director, Mr. W. S. Robinson, further instructed that the following requirements be adhered to in the new building:(a) Ample accommodation to be provided for office staff and other employees.(b) Special attention to be paid to lighting, both natural and artificial.(c) Working temperatures to be controlled to facilitate comfort and efficiency.(d) The buildings and equipment' to be of a permanent nature with furnishings and fittings of modern design.

In general, the metallurgical industry has so far been slower than the chemical industry to adopt ion exchange materials for industrial processes. The atomic energy industry presents a marked exception to this general situation, and the literature shows a rapidly increasing use of ion exchange techniques for the recovery of atomic energy metals on scales ranging from the ultra micro up to that of the largest mining operations. In many cases, the processes used would be equally applicable to more common metals and it is hoped that this review will be of interest to metallurgists outside the specialised atomic energy field. The review is intended to describe developments of ion exchange processes made during the last three years. Earlier studies have been summarised by Kunin and Preuss (1956) and Roland (1957). In order to restrict the number of references discussed, purely analytical procedures have been omitted and only those processes which have been conducted on a reasonably large scale or which, from their nature, areclearly capable of being upscaled, have been considered. For the purposes of this discussion it is assumed that contributors should express the thoughts that arise from their personal experience. So wide is the range of mineral deposits, and so varied the methods employed in their discovery and development, that no two geologists are likely to have been impressed with the same applications of their science. The author's own personal experience has been, during recent years at least, very largely concerned with the broader aspects of the employment of scientific method and geological knowledge to the problems of exploration and exploitation, for the guidance of the general public and governmental authority rather than of mine executives and directors. The view-point thus reached is likely to differ in many respects from that of men who are much more intimately concerned with the mining problems of a single metal or a single mining field, and for this reason a statement may perhaps supplement those from others whose experience has been markedly different.It may well happen that, at some not distant date in the future, when systematic and comprehensive instruction in economic geology is embodied in the courses- prescribed for mining engineers during their years of training, the author's comments will be quitesuperfluous; but at the present time they appear to him to call for expression.The Need for Training of Mining Men in Economic Geology.Contact over a period of many years with mining men who have had different kinds of training and experience has been convincing that there is a general reluctance to acquire a full rational understanding of the geological factors involved in exploratory and developmental problems. The correction of this attitude is regarded as vital to the industry and it is necessary to insist that the outstanding requirement of the present day is the utilization of all branches of geological, investigation in the field and the laboratoryby men who have had systematic and specialized training in these matters.
