The role of metals in the economy is discussed with regard to the flow of metals through to final demand and is illustrated by data for seven metals. Factors influencing the changing pattern of metal consumption are described, including relative prices. A des- cription and discussion of current metal demand forecasting methodologies precedes a discussion firstly of broad economic trends and secondly of the evolving pattern of metal consumption relative to GDP (metal consumption intensity), as technology and other factors change and as economies mature. The tendency for metal consumption intensity to plateau and decline when economies reach a certain region of per capita GDP, following a rapid rise early in the industrial- ization process, is shown in comparative data for seven metals and six countries.

Exploration risk increases with time, due to a general decrease in prospectivity as the more accessible deposits are found, and be- cause of rising costs and demands due to an improving standard of living. Risk is separated into financial risk, which increases sharply at the development stage, and the risk of failure which is at its peak at the outset of exploration. Risk is also divided into internal and external factors; some of the latter cannot be offset, viz. the systematic overall risk for any enterprise. The recently emergent risk embodied in withdrawal of large areas from exploration access is discussed. An appeal is made for objective multiple land-use policies to be applied so that land remains available at reasonable cost and with appropriate environ- mental safeguard conditions. Risks specific to gold exploration are discussed. As gold now accounts for over 50% of all mineral exploration, and most other metals are depressed, any sharp decline in gold will have grave effects on the ex- ploration industry. Gold exploration will become more difficult and expensive in about five years, after most of the readily accessible deposits in Australia are found. Government's role is important in pro- viding stability and basic data at reasonable cost. Exploration for specific minerals or of particular areas could be stimulated by extending the 150%.tax deductibility of R & D to aspects of exploration of strategic im- portance, particularly in the event of a downturn. Gold Fields Ghana Ltd (GF Ghana) currently operates an underground mine at Tarkwa, in south--west Ghana. The mine was operated by Tarkwa Goldfields Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the State Gold Mining Corporation of Ghana (SGMC). The mine was making operating losses and in a poor state of repair. Tarkwa Goldfields retrenched all the staff and GF Ghana assumed management responsibility for its own account on I July 1993.

The New England Fold Belt forms the easternmost and youngest section of the Tasman Fold Belt System of eastern Australia. From middle Palaeozoic to Early Cretaceous time it was the site of extensive episodic calc-alkaline magmatism related to W-dipping subduction. The oldest rocks may have formed at least partly in a volcanic island arc, but from the Late Devonian, the fold belt developed as a convergent Pacific-type continental margin. For Late Devonian-Carboniferous time, parallel belts representing continental margin volcanic arc, forearc basin and subduction complex assemblages can be recognised. Major dextral transform faulting may have offset parts of the fold belt in the Late Carboniferous. In addition, some structural blocks which appear to be out of place in the overall palaeogeographic setting are possible exotic or suspect terranes. A great variety of lode deposits ranging in age from middle Palaeozoic to Early Cretaceous is present in the New England Fold Belt. The vast majority of these are related to emplacement of extensive granite plutons and eruption of continental silicic volcanics in Late Permian-Late Triassic time. However, volcanogenic massive sulphides and volcanic hosted epithermal gold-silver deposits in older rock sequences include one major orebody (Mount Morgan) and several important ones (Mount Chalmers, Cracow, Silver Spur, Cangai and Halls Peak). Some problematical deposits are best classified as metamorphic-hydrothermal. These include gold-bearing quartz reefs and stockworks in sedimentary host rocks, the most important of which are at Gympie, and antimony-gold- tungsten mineralisation in the New England area, mainly at Hillgrove.

Steel rolling mill product finishing pro cesses gradually become or often already are unsuited for current production and marketing conditions. Indications are made as to what has been done to (i) rectify situations of this kind and, (ii) to reduce both product finishing time and costs. A system for rapid on-line determination of weight percentage coal in slurry and weight percentage ash in coal has been developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, University of Queensland. The gauging system is suitable for use with coal flotation slurries or slurries having a maximum particle size of about 1 millimeter. The system is based upon measurement of gamma ray transmission; radioisotope sources emitting photons of two widely different energies are employed. The inaccuracies of measurement that would normally result from variable amounts of air entrained in the slurry are substantially reduced by pressurising the slurry to approximately 2MPa (300 psi) using a Mono pump. The equipment can be used to make measurements on more than one slurry stream by pumping streams sequent- ially. The system is being tested at the Peak Downs Mine of the Utah Development Company in Central Queensland. This paper describes the theoretical principles of the gauge design, the experience gained to date in the commissioning of the equipment, including the installation of a PDP 11/03 computer, and the progress made in developing satisfactory interpretations of the gauge count-rate output.

The dry processing of mineral sands concentrates can result in the generation of significant amounts of airborne dust. The radioactive component of this dust has implications within the context of work environment health codes. The last four years have seen considerable investment in dry plant equipment enclosure and dust extraction systems, with resultant reductions in plant ambient dust levels. Simultaneously, an industry wide program was started to examine the origin, nature, mineralogy and radioactivity of the airborne dust. The major findings of this study have been: ò confirmation that monazite was the only significant source of dust radioactivity. ò recognition of two sources of dust: - agglomerates of finely divided ilmenite-rutile alteration products, which are formed by the removal of surface coatings and particles. - abraded mineral fragments, which reflect the mineralogy of the parent particles.

Pine Creek Goldfields Limited (PCG) is rehabilitating the Enterprise Pit to an aquatic habitat and potential water resource. This paper discusses the development and implementation of that plan. Pine Creek Goldfields Ltd's Enterprise Mine is located approximately 230 km south of Darwin. Open cut mining of the orebody commenced in 1985 and continued for eight years with 14 million m3 of ore and overburden extracted. Geochemical testing of exposed rock types in the pit has demonstrated a propensity to produce acid, and dissolved metals. A plan of management has been developed and implemented to minimise the risk of acid formation and improve the overall water quality in the final void. In developing the plan prime consideration was given to reducing the potential for pit water to impact upon the regional groundwater. An interception system was constructed on Pine Creek to divert approximately 9 km2 of upper catchment into the northern end of the Pit. Construction of the diversion system was completed in December 1993 and a comprehensive surface and groundwater monitoring program initiated. The monitoring program and associated studies are also discussed.

The development of a process for the extraction of antimony from materials produced by Greenbushes Tin Limited has been carried out based on theoretical and laboratory studies. The materials treated have included concentrates of tantalite and cassiterite containing antimony at levels ranging from 0.3% to 2%. Roasting under controlled atmospheres is required to stabilise Sb203 rather than the low vapour pressure metal or higher oxide. Sulphidising additives such as pyrite, pyrrhotite or sulphur give enhanced antimony removal from tantalite and cassiterite at roasting temperatures of 900¦ to 1100¦C. Substantial elimination of antimony to levels of 0.1% or less was Achieved.

Accurate estimation of rock load and selection of types of ground reinforcement to match post-failure behaviour of rock mass are important issues to assure tunnel stability. This paper focuses on the main factors affecting rock load to evaluate the capabilities of the existing models for prediction of rock load. Rock mass properties, project features and excavation method, as well as ground conditions and stress condition were found to be the key factors affecting the magnitude of rock load. Field data from tunnels of about 37.5?km driven in several geological structures in non-squeezing ground was used in this study. An in depth statistical analysis was performed on data to find correlations between the input parameters and measured/observed rock load. A weighting system was proposed to obtain the proper contribution of each factor for estimation of rock load in tunnelling through various ground conditions. The new classification system offered predicted values for rock load that were in a good agreement with the actual field measurements. The high disturbance factor (D>0.4) was the prime factor which controlled the rock load. Rock mass quality was the second key factor influencing rock load, which could be estimated by GSI, GSIresidual , especially when combined with tunnel depth.CITATION:Afshar, T, Sharifzadeh, M and Rostami, J, 2014. In flotation, the property that is exploited to effect the separation of a mineral from an ore is referred to as its floatability. Assessment and quantification of ore floatability is of fundamental importance in modelling and simulation of flotation circuits. This paper describes the design, construction and operation of a new laboratory flotation rig that has been developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) to determine the floatability of different ores on a small-sale. The rig is designed for continuous operation. The major features of the rig are highlighted in this paper. An unique characteristic of the rig is a 9.1 L conditioning vessel. This provides a mixing regime close to plug-flow which avoids complications such as different collector coverages for similarly sized particles (which would considerably increase the complexity of ore floatability determination). The main advantages of this rig when compared to conventional batch flotation cells include better control of the chemical environment and the ability to determine froth recovery, entrainment and water recovery with increased accuracy. Preliminary tests undertaken with a high-grade lead/zinc ore from BHP Cannington are presented demonstrating the good level of reproducibility obtainable in operating the equipment.

In areas where land suitable for development is a scarce resource, an upgraded post-mining land use can result in economic benefits to both the mining company and to the community.A study undertaken at Aberdare Colliery near Ipswich during 198611987 assessed the costs and benefits of developing the site following mining for grazing, forestry and residential uses. The proposed fmal land use plan comprised a combination of these uses that can be upgraded to higher valued uses once subsidence monitoring of backfilled open-cut areas and dumps indicates that total settlement has reached acceptable levels for development to proceed.The study involved the documentation of existing site environmental parameters and the delineation of site opportunities and constraints. The unpredictable nature of settlement over backfilled open-cuts and overburden dumps represents the major constraint to urban development on mined areas.

Boring of a 7.5Km long tunnel under the city of Stockholm commenced in January, 1987. The 3.5m diameter tunnel will pass under the buildings and as no ground settlement is allowed, the regulation for water leakage into the tunnel is very strict. Probe drilling will be carried out continuously ahead of the boring and when water is encountered the rock has to be grouted before passing with the TBM. The tunnelling system enables probe drilling to be carried out during boring with the TBM. This has earlier been a capacity reducing factor as the whole operation has been stopped during probe drilling. The project is using a new generation TBM especially developed for hard rock formations which require higher thrust per cutter to get a high penetration rate.

Gold mineralisation at the Kerimenge-Lemenge prospects is a classical example of myltiple, overprinting events, associated with intrusive-related hydrothermal systems. Repeated emplacement of high level dacitic porphyry bodies (Edie Porphyry; 2.4 - 3.8 Ma) was accompanied by a phreatomagmatic eruption which formed a diatreme-maar complex. Later hydrothermal fluids utilised permeable fault zones and diatreme contacts. Mineralisation took place during two main events. Stage I consists of early quartz - illite/sericite - carbonate phase with associated pyrite-arsenopyrite mineralisation. This phase is zoned from quartz - sericite-pyrite/arsenopyrite in the south at depth, to dominantly manganocarbonate - illitic clay - arsenopyrite- pyrite_s significant base metals in the north and at shallow levels. The majority of known gold (18.1 Mt @ 2.0 g/t Au) at Kerimenge is associated with Stage I activity. The gold occurs primary within the lattice of the sulphides and is metallurgically refractory. Fluid inclusion studies indicate early boiling and progressive cooling and dilution of hydrothermal fluids during the evolution of the Stage I event. Near paleosurface condensation of gases, which evolved off the boiling system at depth, produced abundant low pH bicarbonate fluids. During the waning phases of Stage I activity, these bicarbonate condensate fluids descended down permeable structures and formed banded manganocarbonate veins. High grade non-refractory gold mineralisation during Stage II event is restricted to favourable structures at relatively shallow levels and in the northern regions of the prospect area. Gold in this event exhibits a distinctive Au - Ag - Te -Cu geochemical signature, and is associated with hessite - tennantite - chalcopyrite mineralisation within quartz veining. Alteration and fluid inclusion studies indicate that this style of mineralisation is a result of the quenching of pulses of hot, late magmatic mineralised fluids by the cold condensate waters.

The Eloise Cu-Au deposit is 60 km SE of Cloncurry in NW Queensland and has a current indicated reserve of 3.2 Mt @ 5.8 per cent Cu, 1.5gA Au and I9g/t Ag. It is hosted by metasediments and metabasic rocks that underwent amphibolite facies metamorphism at 550-600¦C and less than 3.5 kb. Peak metamorphism coincided with the regional D2 event which produced an S2 foliation with north-south strike and variable sub-vertical to steep east or west dip. The deposit is associated with several major shear zones parallel to the S2 foliation. The lodes form part of a large alteration system that is localised by the retrograde shear zones. Homblende-biotite-quartz with minor sulphides occur early in the alteration paragenesis which is overprinted by chlorite-muscovite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ¦calcite+¦nagnetite. The later assemblage replaces the earlier Fe-K alteration as well as Fe-rich metamorphic assemblages such as homblende, biotite and staurolite indicating a post peak metamorphism timing for ore formation. Although replacive textures are the most common, the alteration can display open space infill and brecciation as well as durchbewegung and mylonite textures indicating that mineralisation occurred during ongoing ductile deformation. All these features are crosscut by a later brittle phase of calcite-chlorite-quartz¦pyrite alteration.

The quartzite added at the blast furnace for the purpose of adjusting the chemistry of the burden inputs is shown to have a disproportionate impact on both the level and the variability of the hot metal silicon (HMSi). This conclusion is supported not only by direct correlation involving data from five blast furnaces, but also by mass balances. In one case the R2 correlation coefficient was 0.96 and the mass balance was accurate to within five per cent for a wide range of quartzite additions. The results indicate that as much as 43 per cent of the silicon in the added quartzite reports directly to the hot metal. Indeed, silicon from quartzite was found to be much more likely to report to the hot metal compared to silicon from regular sources (eg coke and sinter), reflecting differences in the activity of the silicon source.

Gold and silver mineralisation at the Chatree low sulfidation deposit is hosted in andesitic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks and characterised by multiple hydrothermal alteration assemblages and quartz-carbonate (chlorite-adularia) replacements, veins and breccias. The ore-bearing veins are influenced by intersecting structures and host rock lithologies. Emplacement of the host succession occurred at 250 ¦ 6 Ma (dated with laser ablation ICP-MS U-Pb zircon techniques), which was closely followed by mineralisation at 250.9 ¦ 0.8 Ma based on the analysis of adularia from coarse-grained quartz-sulfide (chalcopyrite-pyrite- sphalerite) veins using laser ablation Ar-Ar methods. Improvements in technology do not necessarily lead to higher profits: the benefit of lower costs can be captured by coal buyers, governments and workforce rather than by the colliery operators. The economic impact of longwall mining in Australia has been critically assessed to provide lessons for the future. For a variety of reasons, companies investing in longwall equipment in the past five years have generally not achieved an adequate return on the funds invested. The effect of technological innovation must be examined in the light of competitive forces operating in the market. Projections of cost reduction trends in the coal industry have been applied to a world cost model to provide a picture of the coal industry in the year 2000.

This paper addresses the area of utilising automatic data capture systems in the metalliferous mining environment for the purpose of tracking personnel and vehicles, for both safety and productivity purposes.As automatic data capture systems in the form of barcodes have revolutionised the stock control procedures in retail establishments in recent years, so too will similar systems in the form of radio frequency identification products (an electronic version of the barcode) transform the way in which many aspects of mining operations will be managed.
