The quality of a photointerpreter's anno- tation of an image may be displayed by writing maps in which the pixels are shaded according to the number of times a pixel was seen to be on a feature. The map of grey tones is more valuable, if, for each grey level, a measure of quality is determined, which is the probability that a feature exists in a pixel of a given grey tone. From repeated annotations (at least four) of the same image by a single observer, it is possible to formulate a perception model which describes stochastic processes in the observer. From that model, it is possible to assign estimates of data quality for each observer to each grey tone. For two observers on the same scene, the 'mean' method of quantifying the grey levels is to assign a value equal to the mean of the ii,:lities for each of the two observers separately. For this example, the grey tones arr thus quantified at probability levels of 0.70, 0.80, 0.90 and 0.95.

Mineral deposits in New Zealand whose origin can be ascribed to primary magmatic segregations are associated with mafic-ultra- mafic complexes related to two orogenic episodes which took place during Paleozoic and Mesozoic times. These mafic-ultramafic complexes are essentially of two types. One is ophiolitic and has podiform chromite mineralisation presumably formed below a spreading ridge. The other type occurs as intraplate layered intrusions in which Fe-Cu-Ni sulphides and Fe- Ti-V oxides have formed as a result of liquid immiscibility with the host magma, and have subsequently accumulated by gravity means. Generalised descriptions are given for some deposits in NW Nelson, Fiordland and Marlborough districts.

Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) as a seam gas has occurred in several locations in the German Creek seam at Southern Colliery. This paper overviews the techniques developed to quantify the H2S content of the seam, overviews research into controlling and reducing H2S emissions from the seam, and details the procedures used to mine through the HZS zone in 702 longwall panel. Learning points from research and mining experience are reviewed for application in the next longwall block.

Designing for early access to deep orebodies is an essential driver for improved project payback. Vertical shaft sinking techniques have been developed to allow concurrent mine level excavation while continuing to sink. Project cash flows can also be improved when simultaneously deepening existing shafts beneath operating hoisting systems. Further economic advantage has been realised through creative sinking sequencing in twin ventilation/service shaft projects. A fourth technique to reduce project schedules involves partial shaft barrel equipping allowing unrestricted access to construct stations and continue with level installations. This approach reduces interference with barrel sinking activities to insignificant proportions. This paper reviews how these approaches have added significant value to actual shaft sinking projects, as assessed from a contractorÆs perspective, and discusses some of the practical issues to be addressed when planning future projects. Designers need to take cognisance throughout all project engineering phases of the adage that you are only sinking when cleaning the face. Cleaning can only be sustained when there is sufficient hoisting capacity.

The Eossing Uranium Mine is a high tonnage low grade open pit operation using acid leaching for uranium extraction and ion exchange and solvent extraction for solution purification. Advanced technology, much of it computer based, has led to major economies that have contained operating unit costs over the last four years in the face of double figure inflation. An improved ore reserve block model and mine planning system have achieved a considerable reduction in the stripping ratio. Drilling and blasting costs have decreased some 25%, mainly by the introduction of heavy ANFO explosive. A centralised computer control centre for the metallurgical plant has increased labour productivity resulting in improved process control. The all-staff workforce is united with management in the objectives of creating a safe, healthy, working and living environment and a prosperous company, capable of contributing to the wellbeing of the nation and the shareholders. This situation has been brought into being by an equal opportunity policy coupled with a management system emphasising open two-way communication through all levels in the organisation. The success of this policy is highly apparent in the morale and productivity of the workforce.

A case study of a landslide, which threatened vital infrastructure essential for the continuous operation of the Ok Tedi copper mine is presented. The paper presents a detailed description of the land- slide, outlines the assets at risk, and how the issue was addressed. This included the consideration of remedial options and the im- plementation of the most economically sound and geotechnically feasible remedial design which was completed within budget and on schedule. The paper is intended to highlight the responsibility of a mine based Geotechnical Engineering section in providing essential geotechnical investigations, design and professional advice on addressing stability issues in the infrastructure region.

A prototype version of a computer controll- ed on-line scanning electron microscope image analyser, employing the real-time signals ob tamed by digital control of the electron beam has been used to obtain statistical quantificat lion of a wide range of mineral grain character istics, including composition, size distribut- ion, and degree of liberation. These propert lies have been determined for suites of whole particles of flotation concentrates, mounted without further preparation. The facility is also well adapted to the measurement of general Istereological parameters. The computer control software is based on an operating system which includes the device drivers and which is linked to FORTRAN programs [containing the procedural algorithms. The knowledge of the expected run of mine (ROM) fragmentation during the feasibility study of a green field site is essential for the design of downstream crushing and milling processes. However,the prediction of blast fragmentation can be a challenging process due to the uncertainty related to the blast design and rock mass parameters. In general,a number of possible blast designs are considered in a feasibility study,with factors such as bench height and blasthole diameter influencing the design. Rock mass parameters are normally derived from a limited number of geotechnical diamond drill cores. Although diamond drill core can provide detailed information concerning intact rock strength (unconfined compressive strength and point load),it provides limited structural information to predict the in situ block size distribution of the rock mass. The in situ block size is an essential input to the prediction of the fragmentation distribution, in particular the coarse end. This paper outlines the methodology of blast fragmentation modeling undertaken for a green field feasibility study at the Riska gold deposit in Indonesia. The favoured milling process for the feasibility study was dump leaching,with no crushing of the ore material extracted from the pit. For this reason,blast fragmentation was a critical issue to be addressed by the study. A range of blast designs were considered with bench heights and blasthole diameters ranging from 4 m to 7 m and 76 mm to 102 mm respectively. Rock mass data was obtained from 19 diamond drill cores across the deposit (total drill length approximately 2200 m). Intact rock strength was estimated from qualitative strength descriptors,while the in situ block size distribution of the rock mass was estimated from the Rock Quality Designation (RQD) of the core. The methodology of fragmentation prediction involved a number of steps including the estimation of rock mass parameters from diamond drillhole data including the estimation of the in situ block size, delineation of blast domains within the deposit,and the assessment of the impact of various blast design parameters and rock mass variation on the predicted fragmentation distribution. The modelling process for the Riska green field site highlighted the need for additional rock mass data to be collected post feasibility stage and once the development of the mine commenced.

In the upper coal surface in the Latrobe Valley, craters known locally as fireholes have developed due to prehistoric coal fires. They can be several hundred metres across and up to fifty metres deep, and are now filled with overburden materials varying from hard baked clays to very soft lacustrine clays. In addition to reducing coal reserves, continuous mining operations are seriously affected by fireholes. Large undulations in the upper coal surface result in a mixture of coal and overburden on the upper mining levels. The very soft lacustrine clays are unstable in the mine batters and the overburden dump, are difficult to handle on the bucket wheel excavator/conveyer system, and have insufficient bearing capacity for the large bucket wheel excavators. Early identification is essen- tial and both drilling and dynamic core penetrometer have been exten- sively used. However, this has not proved adequate in locating and defining the extent of all fireholes, due largely to their irregular shape. To overcome this a range of geophysical techniques has been trialled with very promising results. A trial area has been covered on a twenty metre grid using gravity and Geonics EM34 conductivity measurements and the same area has been covered at a closer spacing with high resolution magnetics. Image processing of contoured magnetic, EM34 conductivity and residual gravity data has resulted in very good correlation with drilling data.

The mining of mineral sands in coastal aquifers is often constrained by other land use conflicts and inappropriate controls imposed through a lack of understanding of environmental interactions and processes. The recent experience with the Tea Gardens mining operation illustrates how increasing our knowledge and understanding leads to more effective management of environmental problems. As well as a source of heavy minerals, the Tea Gardens sand bed serves as a town water supply source. From past experience it was believed that mining could cause undesirable increases in dissolved iron concentrations in the aquifer, but the reasons and mechanisms for this phenomenon were not clear. A water monitoring program was therefore designed for the mining operation which was aimed at protecting the water supply borefield from any detremental effects. After one year the results of the monitoring program were assessed in the light of new knowledge and understanding of iron hydrochemistry. It was found that the existing program was not achieving some of its major aims, and was therefore modified to a more effective and cost efficient program.

Reagents used for batch flotation tests were Aeroxanthate-343 & 350, Dow Z-6, & reagent-4037 (from Benambra) as copper collectors; Na2SiO3 & Na2S2O3as gangue depressants; lime & HCl as pH regulators; and pine oil & MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) as flotation frothers. A Denver Sub A flotation cell of capacity 250 gms was used for the batch flotation experiments. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used for copper assays and microscopy for selectivity and liberation studies. Melbourne tap water was used throughout the experiments. Unless otherwise stated, the following parameters apply to the flotation experiments: flotation impeller speed - 1300 rpm, pulp density during flotation- 22%, reagents addition - in 4 stages, total conditioning time for collectors - 8 minutes, total flotation time- 9 minutes. A variable quantity of copper mineral collector according to the test in question was added, then conditioned the pulp for 2 minutes. The froth was removed by hand, scraping the full length of the cell at constant depth every 10 seconds. No frother is required for this copper tailing flotation. Four concentrates were collected after addition of collector and conditioning at 2,4,6 and 9 minutes. The pulp volume was maintained at a constant level to yield a constant froth depth.

QNI Pty Ltd operates the Yabulu Refinery located 25 kilometres north of Townsville, North Queensland. The plant treats nickel laterite ores sourced from the Philippines, Indonesia and New Caledonia. The cobalt head grade and overall recovery expectations for the 2001/2002 financial year are 0.161 per cent and 53.8 per cent respectively. Cobalt is a valuable byproduct derived from the nickel refining operation which utilises the Caron Process. Any increases in cobalt recovery that are achieved from the existing relatively low level provide significant improvements to the bottom line of the operation. Towards the end of 2000, a project was undertaken to characterise cobalt losses with the sole purpose of improving cobalt recoveries using a variety of analysis techniques. The Time-of- Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS û University of South Australia) method was used to verify the presence of surface bearing cobalt species, originating from either co-precipitation or adsorption mechanisms. Cross-section examinations were also performed using Scanning Electron Micrscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDXS). These techniques indicated the presence of high cobalt concentrations (in the order of several per cent) within a select number of roasted and leached ore particles. The phenomenon of cobalt losses due to incomplete leaching within specific ore particles was not widely documented within the Refinery prior to these studies. In order to quantify losses via this mechanism, Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA û JKTech Centre) was also performed on key samples. This paper serves to document a systematic approach in determining the source of significant valuable mineral losses in an established, operating plant. It discusses the use of a variety of analytical techniques, which have been adapted for the minerals processing industry, but are strongly relevant for plant investigations in the hydrometallurgical industry.

Industrial processes involving multi-phase flows such as flotation require understanding of the relationships between bubbles, solid particles and the flow. Modern experimental tools are employed in this effort to measure with great accuracy the basic features of the motion of all three phases in turbulent flow. We employed a unique digital particle image velocimeter (DPIV) that can record with great accuracy and kHz temporal resolution, velocity vectors of all three phases, namely the fluid, the solid particles and the air bubbles. The interaction of these three phases was studied in homogeneous isotropic turbulence generated by cylindrical grids. Particles and bubbles were released into the turbulence and the motions of the three phases were monitored. The experimental results obtained in the present work were compared with the predictions of the models published in the literature.

Lead blast furnace slags contain typically 10 - 20 mass per cent Zn. The zinc can be recovered by slag fuming, in which a powdered coal/air mixture is injected into a molten slag bath. Volatilised zinc is recovered as zinc oxide from the gas and processed hydrometallurgically to produce zinc metal. The ISASMELT continuous lead smelting process in operation at Mt Isa produces a slag containing about 12 per cent Zn which is currently granulated and stockpiled. This slag could flow to a further bath-smelting reactor for continuous zinc fuming. Rather than collecting the zinc as fume from such a process, one option would be to recover it using a lead splash condenser. The success of this operation would depend on the composition of the gas produced, in particular the concentrations of gases capable of reoxidising zinc vapour, viz, carbon dioxide and water vapour. The aim of this investigation was to determine the smelting conditions for a bath-smelting process such as ISASMELT or SIROSMELT which would produce a gas similar in composition to that from an Imperial Smelting Furnace by thermodynamic modelling of the process using the CSIRO Thermochemistry System. It was found that such a gas could be produced if coal injection and oxygen enrichment of the combustion air to at least 40 per cent 02 were used. However, the off-take gases must be conditioned by addition of methane to reduce the water vapour content to acceptable levels. An addition rate of ten per cent of the off-gas flowrate was found to be adequate. Addition of methane to the off-gas had the added advantage of cooling the gas from the bath temperature to a temperature suitable for normal lead splash condenser operation.

Intrusion related Cu/Au mineralisation is localised in Pacific Rim island arcs by arc parallel, termed accretionary structures; or arc normal, termed transfer structures. In Papua New Guinea, NE trending transfer structures, evident on Landsat imagery, represent deep crustal fractures which have facilitated dextral rotation of the mainland during oblique plate collision. Major structures localise intrusion centres, and by rotation, develop ore hosting dilational environ-ments in subsidiary structures. While transfer structures localise the Porgera, Wafi and Yandera porphyry centres, the Frieda Porphyry and associated Nena high sulphidation Cu/Au mineralisation are localised by accretionary structures. The Bulolo Graben, which hosts the Morobe Goldfield, developed during intra arc rifting aided by movement on transfer structures. Crustal thinning has initiated magmatism with which diatreme breccias and fracture controlled mineralisation are associated.

Korea and Japan had a population of 18,000,000 ; China, 437,000,000 ; Persia, 9,000,000 ; Arabia, 5,000,000; South Africa, 129,000,000; Madagascar, 3,500,000 ; India, 251,000,000; Siam, Indo-China, and so forth, 16,225,000; Federated Malay States, 3,225,000; and, very significantly, Java, only four and three quarter days from Fremantle, over 50,000,000. From the map displayed an idea of the comparative areas of the countries mentioned and Australia could be gained. It was rather amazing that Australia, with its great potentialities, had only about 5,150,000 people. This paper deals with the modernisation of the brakes on an electrically coupled Blair multi-rope hoist and covers the removal of the old calliper brakes and hydraulic control system, and its replacement with brake discs, disc braking units and hydraulic control systems. The paper covers the braking requirements of the hoist, which is made up of two electrically coupled single-drum hoists, together with the theory behind the choice of brakes and control systems supplied. The paper also covers the project logistics that were required in order to install and commission the new brakes and control systems with the minimum disruption to production on the only rock hoist on a major production shaft. Items covered include the modifications to civil works, pre-installation of bearing lubrication systems, brake discs and hydraulics and the interfacing of the new hydraulic control system to the existing electric control system. It had to be designed to be compatible to a new electric drive and control system due for installation at the end of 2005.

The Lachlan Fold Belt (LFB) is a complex orogenic belt which developed in Early to Mid Palaeozoic time. A number of orogenies and more localised deformational events affected the region. A simplified classification scheme for the diverse gold deposit types is proposed, subdividing primary mineralizing processes into four categories: volcanism (epithermal and volcanogenic deposits), igneous intrusion (subvolcanic/porphyry style, skarn and magmatic deposits), metahydrothermal processes (deposits generated during metamorphism and regional deformation) and hydrothermal-distal processes (deposits generated by poorly understood, generally remote large scale hydrothermal processes). Major gold deposit associations include epithermal and porphyry style deposits in Ordovician-Early Silurian shoshonitic andesite sequences; volcanogenic base metal-gold deposits in Silurian rift or basin felsic sequences; vein deposits in Late Silurian and Early Devonian S and I-type granitoids; deposits in Early Devonian sedimentary rocks of the Cobar Basin probably generated by metahydrothermal processes during basin closure and cleavage formation; deposits associated with serpentinite; and metahydrothermal quartz vein deposits in folded sedimentary rocks.Studies of host rock geochemistry suggest a relationship between magma types, gold enrichment and mineralization particularly in shoshonitic sequences and Early Devonian granitoids of the Boggy Plain Supersuite. Structural studies indicate the importance of thrust type structures and detachment faults in generation and location of gold mineralization. Lead isotope initial ratios help define metallogenic associations and a number of distinctive isotope "signatures" have been established.

Appin Colliery mines the Bulli Seam with a gas composition of 98.5% methane and 1.5% carbon dioxide. Relaxation of the strata generally occurs to below the base of the Wongawilli Seam, some 40 m below the Bulli Seam, and approxim- ately 125 m above the Bulli Seam, for longwall face widths of 135 m or more. Previous exper- ience showed that when longwall faces were mined for a distance approximately equal to the face width, the mine ventilation could not provide sufficient dilution due to methane emissions from the underlying measures. Postdraining downholes were drilled to intersect the Wongawilli Seam below the operat- ng longwall. These holes were connected to an underground to surface gas range and various suction levels were applied to improve gas drainage. The resulting gas flow rates and purity from all the downholes were regularly monitored and peak flows in some holes exceeded 160 1/sec. The surface plant drained almost 20 million m3 of gas for the period July 1981 to January 1982 at an average methane purity of approximately 70%. Distinct patterns emerged for different downholes from curves illustrat- ing their variations in flow rate with distance subsequent to passage of the longwall face.
