The structural pattern of Victoria shows the presence of EW, NW, NE as well as the more readily recognised NNW factors commonly associated with the goldfields. ENE and WNW trends are also present. This structural lattice affects all rocks of the State. Landsat imagery shows that the EW, NW and NE structural elements are closely related spatially to the distribution of Palaeozoic igneous intrusives, Cainozoic volcanic vents as well as all historically important gold mines. It is suggested that the EW, NW and NE structural grid visible on landsat imagery is a reflection of the structure of a mid-crustal layer situated between 3.5 and 17 kms below the surface. The points of intersection of the structural elements of the mid-crustal layer offer most favourable loci for the escape of energy in the form of heat. The correlation between the distribution of igneous plutons, volcanic vents and centres of mineralisation, all reliant on high levels of energy for their formation, indicates the stability of the structures of the mid-crustal layer since early Palaeozoic times. The deep level crustal structures are believed to be, related to the release of stresses placed on the crust since early Palaeozoic times by the rotation of the Earth. A geological model that accommodates the presence of a mid-crustal layer as well as the complexities of the recognised orogenic cycles of southeast Australia is suggested. All 1 000 kg Au reef and deep lead mines fall within 1.5 and 2.5 km respectively of strong linears associated intimately with plutons and volcanic vents. Future exploration of the State is more likely to meet with success if it too is confined to the evaluation of these and similar linears. The mode of mineralisation of any one centre will depend upon the temperature, pressure and geochemical gradients operating on the migrating mineralising fluids as well as the structures in the host rocks. These factors are likely to have varied considerably from one centre of mineralisation to the next and consistency of mineral isation form and depth should not be expected along the length of any single Linear.

Mssissippi Valley-type (MVT) and sedimentary-exhalative (SEDEX) zinc-lead deposits represent about half to three-quarters of the world's production and reserves of lead and zinc. The two deposit-types have traditionally been regarded as separate entities in terms of genesis largely because they possess very different morphologies, resulting from the epigenetic nature of MVT deposits and the syngenetic origin of SEDEX deposits. Similarities in regional setting, metal ratios, size and grade, lead and sulphur isotopes, and source(s) of fluids and metals in the two deposit-types, however, suggest that they could be products of similar genetic processes. The physical properties of MVT ore fluids suggest that certain types of SEDEX deposits could have been formed from fluids possessing similar salinities and temperatures. The hypothesis is further strengthened by the facts that: 1. in several cases MVT and SEDEX mineralisation occurs in the same region, and 2. recent advances in establishing the timing of MVT mineralisation has revealed that some MVT deposits are contemporaneous with nearby SEDEX deposits. If MVT and SEDEX zinc-lead deposits do indeed share a common ultimate derivation from fluids that emanated from sedimentary basins, then the presence of one deposit-type in a region could be used to infer the possible presence of undetected deposits of the other type. Furthermore, knowledge of the mineralisation age of one type will constrain the exploration target host rocks of the other type. A genetic relationship between MVT and SEDEX mineralisation may also explain why certain individual deposits, such as several in Ireland and eastern Canada, appear to be 'hybrids' and possess geological attributes of both end-member types.

Due to increased production of steel in India, the thrust is now on iron ore producers not only to enhance productivity from existing mines, but to look also into alternative resources, like lean grade iron ores such as banded haematite quartz (BHQ)/banded haematite jasper (BHJ), which are available in abundance but not yet utilised for want of suitable process technology. In this context, BHJ ore from the Bellary-Hospet sector was collected and subjected to detailed physical, chemical and mineralogical characterisation and beneficiation studies. The as-received sample was found to occur physically as alternating layers of haematite and jasper. The chemical analysis of the sample was 41.20 per cent Fe, 39.10 per cent SiO2 and 0.86 per cent Al2O3. Based on the mineralogical observation, haematite was found to be the lone ore mineral and jasper was the major gangue mineral. The microscopic observations revealed that the ore minerals liberate at a top size of 0.150 mm. Guided by the characterisation results, indicative tests were conducted using gravity and magnetic separation equipment, namely, Floatex«, gravity slime table and wet high intensity magnetic separator (WHIMS). The results indicate that it is possible to upgrade the sample by both gravity and magnetic separation techniques. However, the WHIMS results indicate that jasper grains report to the concentrate at higher gauss intensities. Therefore, based on the encouraging gravity separation results and the availability of new design spirals for treating fine particles, the applicability of gravity spirals for beneficiating BHJ in the liberation size range of -0.150 mm was studied. The sample was ground to a top size of 0.150 mm and was subjected to preconcentration using wash waterless spirals. Tests were conducted at different feed rates, pulp densities and splitter positions. The results indicate that it is possible to upgrade the sample from a feed grade of 41.20 per cent Fe to a preconcentrate ranging from 46 per cent to 62 per cent Fe with a yield ranging from 19 per cent to 55 per cent. The obtained preconcentrate was then subjected to a cleaning stage by using a combination of wash water and wash waterless spirals. The test results indicate that it is possible to obtain a final concentrate assaying 65.75 per cent Fe and 4.75 per cent SiO2 with a yield of 25.9 per cent and an iron recovery of 41.31 per cent. It was concluded that further test work is necessary to increase the recovery and improve the product specification.

Potential waste rock products from the mining of epithermal deposits in the Hauraki Goldfield are characterised to facilitate their management. Hydrothermally altered andesites and their weathered near surface equivalents have been examined from the Golden Cross, Karangahake and Monawai gold deposits. These materials vary in both their clay content (smectite, illite, kaolinite and chlorite) and the degree of silicification resulting from alteration and weathering. The simulated degradation (slaking tests) of waste materials cannot be explained purely by consideration of clay content, siliciflcation, or the resultant variations in porosity.   Microstructure is considered to be essential in predicting the physical degradation of waste rock. The scanning electron microscope is an effective tool in such an investigation. Increasing alteration results in clay particles becoming more randomly orientated (matrix microstructure); this causes a reduction in the surface area of contacts between components resulting in increased potential for degradation. The extent of skeletal microstructure (commonly characteristic of weathering) is an important control on effective porosity and the long term potential for degradation. Management requirements for these materials include the minimisation of moisture content variations (with the prevention of initial drying being of primary importance) and the containment of sediments produced.

Occurrence data of Tastubian,Sterlitamakian, and Aktastinian (all of Sakmarian Stage of Early Permian) brachiopod genera are analysed by Q-mode cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and discriminant analysis based on presence or absence of genera. Five faunal provinces and their corresponding generic associations persisted throughout the Sakmarian Stage. The additional Sasian Province incorporating the Lhasa and Shan-Thai terranes became recognisable in Sterlitarakian and strengthened in òAktastinian, implying a Tastubian-Sterlitamakian rifting event, followed by subsequent northward drift and divergence from Gondwana, and convergence with Laurasia. The nature of Permian 'Tethys' is discussed on the basis of faunal migration and abrupt changes of faunal provinciality in Lhasa and Shan-Thai terranes.

The control of mineral processing plants incorporates a number of off-line and on-line actions by plant personnel to obtain satisfactory plant performance. In general, off-line actions centre around intensive data analysis, while on-line activities are either automated control actions or prompted by qualitative interpretations of quantitative and qualitative information. Data sets obtained by various data logging devices and laboratory analysis of samples in many modem plants may be very large and are often unmanageable. This paper presents a method of analysing the data sets typically found in mineral processing, based on cluster analysis. The results of this analysis leads to a more complete understanding of operations in comparison with existing analysis tools used in mineral processing.Improved process configuration, optimised control strategies and in some cases, direct use of the results in monitoring process unit operations may be achieved.

The San Vicente stratabound zinc-lead rhythmite deposit, Peru, is hosted in carbonates of the Late Triassic - Early Jurassic Pucara Group. These strata were deposited in a large, shallow water, carbonate platform which extended nearly continuously for 150 kilometers (north-south) in the eastern part of the Pucara basin.The distinctive sulfide-bearing rhythmites occur in three dolomite units which, from bottom to top, include the San Judas horizon with one sulfide-bearing manto; the San Vicente horizon with seven sulfide-bearing mantos including the main ore horizon; and the Alfonso horizon with three sulfide-bearing mantos. The dark gray sulfide-bearing dolostone layers range in thickness from a few millimeters to a few centimeters and contain variable amounts of carbonaceous material, pyrite, quartz, fine-grained sphalerite and galena. They are bordered on each side by selvages of yellow to red-brown coarse-grained sphalerite containing minor amounts of galena. Coarsely crystalline white or gray sparry dolomite is found between the coarse-grained sphalerite layers. Although commonly stratiform and uniform in thickness, the dark layers curve, "pinch out," coalesce, and form "islands" and "peninsulas."Mineral replacement textures, the paragenetic sequence, and presence of sparry dolomite, bitumen, intraformational breccias and isotope data support a hydrothermal replacement origin by metal-bearing solutions that deposited the ore and related minerals in space previously occupied by dolomite and evaporite minerals. The alignment of the Zn -Pb deposits, and at San Vicente the orientation of the mantos, the spatially and temporally associated igneous sills and the tourmaline-bearing sandstone support hydrothermal mineralization driven by a magmatic heat source in a tensional regime.

ABS'TRACT For a number of years research efforts have been directed towards improving the efficiency of sampling and analysing coal mine roadway dusts. In the past decade the practicality of rapid, on site analysis of the incombustible content of these dusts using a radioactive technique has been receiving close attention both in Australia and overseas. Accurate measurement of the total incombustibles present is only possible by time consuming chemical methods. As the densities of the solid incombustible materials are greater than that of coal, they absorb a higher proportion of incident low energy gamma radiation than does coal. The amount of such radiation "back scattered" from mine dust samples is therefore inversely related to their average densities, and hence to their incombustible contents. This phenomenon can be used as a measure of incombustible content by employing an appropriately designed and calibrated instrument.

The deep seafloor in Papua New Guinea's proposed Exclusive Economic Zone appears to be a gold-rich province in the same sense as the territory above sea level. Two significant sites with polymetallic massive sulphide deposits forming today are known on neovolcanic ridges in the Manus Basin. Their high precious metal contents have led to renewed interest in the issue of exploiting seafloor mineral deposits. The prospects of finding other, possibly larger deposits in the region appear substantial. This paper reviews current data on seafloor deposits in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and raises some issues relating to future commercial exploration and mining of the sea floor. One of the known PNG deposits could become a prime candidate for the trials needed to develop technology, establish costs, and minimise environmental impact.

Hypogene alteration zones have been described as a precursor to high-grade haematite deposits in Australia, Brazil and elsewhere. This alteration is described as being below or distal and is typically magnetite-carbonate-silicates reflecting Mg - Fe metasomatism. This paper describes, without genetic implication, the mineral zonation and possible structural control on mineralogic variation within the Tilden Mine, a concentrating grade haematite deposit in Michigan, USA. In contrast to the high-grade deposits, these variations are not peripheral to the orebodies but are the ore. The deposit occurs within the Negaunee Iron Formation, along the southern margin of the Paleoproterozoic Marquette Range Supergroup basin. The regional structure is a fault-bounded west plunging syncline within the crustal scale Great Lakes Tectonic Zone, which forms the boundary between Archean granite-greenstone and gneissic terranes. Local structure consists of second-order anticlines and synclines with variable northwest and southwest plunges. The interaction of sedimentation and diagenesis within growth fault controlled basins, along with a possible metamorphic and/or hydrothermal overprint has resulted in a complex series of ore types. For modelling purposes, the deposit is divided into geologic domains based on both lithology and metallurgical response in the laboratory and in the plant. Mineralogic variation is recognised within individual mineral grains; at blast pattern (10 - 15 m) and development drill hole (100 m) scales.

‘Every mine is a pilot’ is an attitude which encourages the mining paradox of optimistic mine plans and equipment under performance; propped up by an environment lacking accountability. The premise that ‘every mine is a pilot’, appears to underlie the development and operating approach to most mines. It is the hypothesis of this paper that many mining companies, development teams and their managers largely ignore what is done elsewhere. Anecdotally, most planners don’t know whether the selected rates are high or low (rates based on theoretical models tend to be high – certainly higher than what most companies can achieve). Mines then consistently operate the equipment at rates well below targets; often more than 20 per cent below. Further to this paradox, mine performance data demonstrates the average mine is currently operating their equipment at levels of output not much more than half the output of those in the top ten per cent. On the whole mines don’t know the potential of their equipment and therefore don’t put appropriate plans in place to do better. After all, when ‘every mine is a pilot’ there is little reason to look to one’s peers for an indication of potential. This paper will outline why every mine is not a pilot and how mines do value some knowledge, but not as much as they should. This paper proposes a two-pronged approach to address this issue in the area of equipment performance. This approach is to:1. engage in better forecasting of equipment rates and better subsequent performance through benchmarking against industry standards2. provide conditions for more accountability.These parameters are linked and proper implementation of them will address the losses which many shareholders and financiers have incurred when investing in companies with unrealistic mining plans.CITATION:Lumley, G I, 2016. In, most of the other companies now exploring in Australia, public relations are handled within the company, directed from the highest executive level.The object of public relations in.the oil industry is. to create in the public mind an impression favourable to the industry as a whole and'the company -or group of companies with which the public relations officer is associated.

The method for design of primary roof support for the large todoidal cavern constructed to house the Sydney Opera House parking station is presented. The cavern was constructed with 5 m of rock cover beneath Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens. Design of rock reinfonnent using a combination of fully grouted rock dowels and Macalloy bars was based on control of horizontal shear movement along bedding features in the roof. A combination of linear arch type analyses and non-linear jointed finite element analyses were used in the design study together with an analysis of the shear resistance offered by fully grouted bolts under shear deformation.

The discovery of gold mineralization at the Manhattan mercury mine, Napa and Yolo counties, California in 1978 was the result of applying a new exploration ore deposit model in a region previously unprospected for gold. This discovery, the McLaughlin gold mine, owned and operated by Home-stake Mining Company, is a classic epithermal mercury-hot springs-gold deposit currently producing approximately 7,776,000 grams of gold annually.The exploration program that led to this discovery was based on a mercury-hot springs-gold genetic model. The model was developed using basic knowledge of ore-forming processes plus careful field observations made during examination of many known precious metal districts in. the Western U.S.A. Theoretically, hot spring systems could host gold deposits and, indeed, gold in these environments had been recognized for years. However, at the time of the McLaughlin discovery, it was not known to occur in sufficient quantities to inspire geologists to explore hot spring systems specifically for gold. Field observations recognized the presence of hot spring deposits and mercury mineralization asso-ciated with precious metal districts, (Bodie, California being a type example), and this associ-ation prompted the development of a hypothetical model. Subsequent exploration activities were directed towards the examination of mercury mines and prospects as potential targets for gold deposits. The model envisioned hot spring deposits (sinter) containing mercury mineralization at the surface with anomalous gold values grading downward into significant ore grade gold values.

This paper describes studies into two particular aspects of the Lochiel deposit which formed part of feasibility level geot2chnical and hydrogeological investigations for proposed open cut mine development. The two aspects were depressurisation of thick beds of silt located through the profile and the determination of characteristics and origins of soil structure and their effect on pit stability. The studies were very detailed and multi disciplinary and highlight the integration of geology, geotechnics, hydrogeology and mining that is required for mine development studies. It is considered that as more marginal deposits are developed throughout the world the demands for efficient economic mining together with in- creasing scales of operation will require simi- lar types of studies. As such the studies pre- sented herein are likely to be a forerunner to a,emerging trend for development of open pit mines in difficult ground and water conditions.

Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) operates the Mount Isa open cut and underground copper (Cu) and zinc-lead (Zn/Pb) mines near Mount Isa in Queensland, Australia. Tailings from processed Cu and Zn-Pb ore is contained in a 1,315 ha shallow (< 35 m deep) multi-cell valley fill tailings storage facility (TSF). Static geochemical testing conducted by MIM over the life of mine (LoM) verifies that the Cu, and Zn-Pb tailings has a wide range in sulfide content and diverse mineralogy with significant acid neutralising capacity (ANC) in some samples. The tailings are predominantly classified as potentially acid forming (PAF) using static analytical methods. Kinetic leach testing using free draining columns and humidity cell tests simulating tailings placed on the surface of the TSF suggest that the tailings samples are likely to remain non-acid forming (NAF) for 10 to 40 years under aerial exposure, and much longer than this under saturated conditions within the TSF. During this period of weathering, as ANC is depleted, the neutral pH drainage may contain elevated concentrations of some elements including sulfate, manganese and zinc. The Mabilo copper-gold-magnetite skarn deposit is located in southern Luzon in the Paracale mineral district, where iron has been produced historically from several skarn deposits. Mabilo occurs in the south-west of the district and is distinct and significant because of its high grades of copper and gold compared to historical mines.The Mabilo licence surrounds the Venida prospect, where past small-scale mining has exploited iron, copper and gold mineralisation in oxidised skarn. A ground magnetic survey in 2007 defined a number of strong anomalies under Quaternary volcanic cover south of Venida. The property was acquired by Sierra Mining Ltd in 2011, the magnetic data were remodelled and drilling commenced in September 2012. Diamond drill hole MDH001 targeted the strongest anomaly, which was 500 m south of Venida and under 20 m of volcanic cover. It intersected 94 m with an average grade of 2.2 per cent copper, 1.6 g/t gold and 36.6 per cent iron. Subsequent drilling was targeted by magnetic modelling, incorporating magnetic susceptibility data from drill core, which resulted in a high percentage of successful drill holes.The mineralised skarn preferentially replaces a dipping limestone unit within an Eocene sequence dominated by volcanic siltstone and sandstone, metamorphosed to marble and hornfels in the aureole of a Miocene quartz-diorite intrusion. Skarn occurs discontinuously along the eastern and southern diorite contact, controlled by primary sedimentary facies variation, structural geometry, fault offsets and intrusive contacts.Coarse magnetite skarn with garnet and minor wollastonite and clinopyroxene contains variably abundant chalcopyrite and minor molybdenite. Magnetite skarn occurs in sharp contact with unaltered marble or grades into garnet skarn with minor chalcopyrite. Structurally controlled retrograde skarn alteration is strong to intense and is characterised by bornite, clinozoisite, iron carbonate and chlorite. The retrograde skarn is weakly overprinted by late-stage pyrite veining and brecciation associated with clay-silica alteration with arsenopyrite and tetrahedrite-tennantite.The quartz-diorite stock is interpreted as the source of the prograde skarn-forming and mineralising fluids. Late-stage porphyritic intrusions in the contact zone indicate continuing magmatism during uplift, when telescoping led to a high-level, high-sulfidation overprint. COALEX Pry Limited operates two underground steaming coal mines on the western edge of the Sydney Basin near Lithgow, New South Wales. Baal Bone Colliery uses longwall technology for an output of over two million tonne/year while Clarence Colliery currently uses continuous miners and breaker line supports for an output of two million tonnelyear.A computerised geological database and modelling system has been implemented to service these mines routinely, as well as several outlying prospects. The database is constantly upgraded for drillhole information, surveyed spot levels on the surface and underground, quality sampling details, surveyed mine workings and geological mapping. This information is edited on a routine basis, allowing dynamic modelling of key aspects of geology for ongoing operations.

At present there exist few engineering calculations and principles to determine exclusion zones for personnel in the vicinity of underground explosive storage areas. This paper is written to encourage discussion and proposes a method to determine the impact of a blast wave through scientific principles. Then, criteria to determine an ‘exclusion zone’ need to be identified.There has been much work on identifying the pressure rise and the energy of explosive detonations underground but little to develop standards in criteria that can be used to identify exclusion zones for useful design of underground infrastructure. The author presents the newest ways of calculating the pressure rise and energy (impulse) of detonations and puts forward some criteria to be used in the identification of personnel exclusion zones to spark peer review and discussion of these criteria towards developing standards for engineering design.Smith and Sapko (2005) used Sach’s scaling laws to develop a relationship for both pressure rise and impulse, which incorporated factors for intersections. Intersections will have a large bearing on the peak pressure and the energy of the blast wave and needs to be incorporated. Silvestrini, Genova and Leon Trujillo (2009) developed the scaling laws with an energy concentration factor to predict blast propagation in partially confined geometries and together the author has proposed equations for determining the peak side pressure and the impulse in a tunnel. Given the weight and type of the explosive, the average cross-section of the tunnel complex and the number and type of intersections encountered, the pressure and impulse can be calculated.The military has carried out many investigations as to the influence of blast pressure and impulse on the human body. Lung damage, ear damage and velocity knock down are three of the criteria standards that are presented as possible methods of determining exclusion zones around an underground explosives magazine. The author suggests that the velocity curves presented by Bowen, Fletcher and Richmond (1968) could be an acceptable method of determining an exclusion zone as it incorporates the side pressure and the energy of a blast wave to determine the ability of the wave to knock down personnel.CITATION:Lovitt, M B, 2014. Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited operates one of the largest producing gold mines in the world. The annual production of 76 tons of gold from 12 million tons of ore treated is obtained mainly from underground sources. Daily some 6.6 km of stope face is blasted and 41 tons of explosives is used to break the rock. The mine employs 45 000 men of whom 35 000 work underground. The company operates nine large vertical shaft systems of which seven extend more than 2000 m below surface and an eighth, currently being sunk, will bottom at 3700 m below surface.
