The Hidden Valley Gold Project is located in a remote and mountainous area of the Morobe Province approximately 30 km south of the township of Bulolo and approximately 90 km south-southwest of the provincial capital, Lae. The Hidden Valley deposit was discovered in 1984 with the nearby Hamata and Kaveroi deposits discovered in 1987 and 1992 respectively. Reserves (Harmony, 2009) at these three deposits are 42.1 million tonnes of ore containing approximately 2.9 million ounces of gold and 45 million ounces of silver. A further 5.4 million ounces of gold and 84 million ounces of silver are in the resources category. The process plant is designed to treat 4.2 million tonnes per year of gold/silver ore extracted by open cut mining methods. Ore is classified into three ore types according to oxidation state: oxide, transition and primary. The silver to gold grade ratio is high for the Hidden Valley and Kaveroi ores, generally in the range 15 - 20:1, and much lower for Hamata, typically 1 - 2:1: Primary ore is the dominant ore type at Hidden Valley with sulfur grades up to about two per cent sulfur. Oxide and transition ores are more prevalent at the Hamata deposit, but its primary ore has up to five per cent sulfur grades. Variable ore types, particularly in the initial years of operation, high silver to gold ratios and limited plant site area, due to the challenging terrain, present the main processing challenges for this project. This paper describes the operating strategies and process development for the main areas of this circuit, highlighting selections of processes and equipment that achieve cost effective, yet flexible solutions to the treatment of ores from these deposits.

Telfer Gold Mine combines a world-class gold and copper resource and longevity of operation as a major gold and copper producer. Telfer Gold Mine has undergone a series of transformations since mining commenced as a high-grade narrow-vein oxide open pit operation in 1977. In 1986, the open pit operation converted from a narrow-vein, high-grade operation, to a low-grade high-volume oxide mining operation utilising dump leach processing technology. Mechanised underground mining of the high-grade narrow-veins commenced in 1990. Total recovered gold production between 1977 to 1999 has totalled 5.7 million ounces. The Telfer Extension Project consists of two pre-feasibility studies, the Surface Extension Project (SEP) and the I-Series Project (ISP). The combined studies represent one of the more significant resource evaluations undertaken in the gold industry in recent times. Geological activities for the SEP pre-feasibility study have included the drill definition of a large low-grade resource within an area of 25 km2 . The surface drilling program has completed 15 000 metres of HQ3 diamond drilling and over 30 000 metres of RC between last quarter of 1998 and late-1999. The ISP pre-feasibility study is currently evaluating the resource potential of both a high-grade low-volume and a lower grade bulk mining scenario, 800 m to 1200 m below the surface of Main Dome. 15 000 metres of underground diamond drilling have been completed between last quarter of 1998 and August 1999 as part of this study. Systems and cultures have been developed to maximise safety, monitor the quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) on all aspects of the operation, and minimise impact on the environment. All data are stored in database systems, specifically designed for Telfer operations. 3D geostatistical resource estimation using ordinary kriging has been carried out for over 220 geological domains within the 25 km3 of mineralised system. Non-linear geostatistical techniques are being investigated as part of the pre-feasibility study.

A large body of porphyry-type copper mineralization occurs at Panguna in southern BougainviIle. It is associated with the intrusion of quartz diorite/granodiorite into andesites, particularly with the contact zone. Metasomatism of both intrusives and andesite resulted in the formation of biotite pseudomorphing hornblende and the veining of the resultant biotite diorite and biotitized andesite by quartz-chalcopyrite veins with pink orthoclase and dark biotite selvages, respectively.The orientation of intrusives and veins appears to be controlled by premineralization fault-joint patterns in the intruded andesitic Kieta Volcanics.

It is shown that a differential colorimetric technique can be used as a routine method for the estimation of titanium in beach sands, and their ore dressing products. The method will tolerate the presence of most of the other elements usually found in beach sands. The accuracy is shown to be within the limits of ±0ò31 per cent for concentrates containing more than 95 per cent titanium dioxide and ±1 per cent for tailings containing 0ò2 per cent titanium dioxide. The method is described for use with a Hilger "Spekker" absorptiometer.

Occasional, sporadic and small occurrences of lollingite in the Broken Hill lode have been described,(l) mostly in the garnet sandstone in the foot-wall and under-wall of the Broken Hill lode. The lollingite contains appreciable percentages of cobalt and nickel and is regarded as an early mineral in the development of the lode; and, with the incoming of the sulphides, it has suffered considerable replacement by arsenopyrite. During the conversion of iron arsenide into the iron sulpho-arsenide, ilie nickel and most of the cobalt are removed in solution and are inferred to reappear in niccolite and other minerals that have been recorded among the later minerals of the Broken Hill lode. As a result of observations of the officers of ilie Broken Hill South Ltd., an occurrence of cobaltite can now be recorded which has developed by an analogous type of replacement.Cobaltite has previously been recorded from the Australian Broken Hill Consols lode in the vicinity of the rich deposits of silver, though not in contact with them. The area (330 sq. miles) shown on the map of the Brocks Creek District (Fig. 1), was mapped by the Northern Territory geological party of the Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia. This work was done in two stages:-(i) In 1935, an area of 30 sq. miles around the Golden Dyke mine was mapped by P. S. Hossfeld, Senior Geologist, and A. H. Voisey, Assistant Geologist. The results were described in a detailed report (10).(ii) In 1939, an area of 300 sq. miles in the Brocks Creek district was mapped by C. J. Sullivan (Senior Assistant Geologist), and V. M. Cottle and S. N. Kiek (Assistant Geologists) under the general supervision of P. S. Hossfeld (Senior Geologist).An outline structural map, together with some geological notes was published (1), but that map does not show the amphibolites, and the relationship between ore occurrence and general geology is not emphasised. The publication of the detailed maps and reportwas postponed indefinitely as a result of war. The original mapping was based on air photographs with a scale of approximately 1 in. to 1,200 ft., and all detail which could be shown at that scale was mapped. Features recorded included rock types, details of structure, mineralisation, and surface workings, creeks and soil boundaries. Underground mapping was also carried out. The present map is much simplified from the original, but it is hoped that it shows sufficient information to reveal close relationship between structure, granite, sills of amphibolite and gold occurrence. About 50 per cent. of the area is covered by deep soil or alluvium, and in these portions the geology of the underlying rocks was not determined with accuracy, though in many places strike trends could be deduced from air photographs.Because the A.G. & G.S.N.A. had published the geological notes and map referred to above, and because the publication of the detailed report and maps is still postponed indefinitely, approval has been given by the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (which took over the affairs of the A.G. & G.S.N.A. at the termination of its operations) to the preparation of the present paper so that information would be available to the public.The views expressed in this report are those of author. The results of the investigation suggest that in areas where granites are predominantly concordant with bedding, ore deposits may be found at approximately the same stratigraphic horizon. It is thus important to correlate beds even though their relationship may have been obscured by faulting and folding.

As an extension to investigations into methods of upgrading the Iitania content of ilmenite concentrate from beach sands using 100 g/day, a small pilot plant treating 23 kg/ day of ilmenite was used.In the pilot plant the iron oxide in the ilmenite was reduced to iron at 1200°C using carbon (coal/char) without melting the material, using a tunnel kiln heating cycle, the charges contained in saggars, The iron was then separated from the titania fraction by ball milling, wet magnetic separation, and screening. The resulting magnetic product was high in iron (about 80 per cent Fe) and the non-magnetic product high intitania (about 70 per cent TiO2).From this trial sufficient data were obtained to enable the preparation of a flow sheet for a plant producing 62,300 tonnes/year total products, and an estimate of costs to be made. This has shown that for an estimatedcapital expenditure of nearly $6,000,000 and annual production costs of about $4,000,000, the cost per tonne of high titania product (76 per cent TiO2) would be nearly $70.

A new 2.5D airborne electromagnetic (AEM) algorithm has been developed by Intrepid Geophysics and Jovan Silic & Associates. The advantage of 2.5D (2D geology, 3D source) AEM inversion in 3D geological mapping applications and identification of conductive drilling targets, compared to the more commonly used conductivity-depth imaging (CDI) transforms or 1D inversions, are demonstrated using examples from banded iron formations (BIFs) and other geological settings. We show emerging AEM systems are capable of providing estimates of economic rock unit thicknesses, dips and fault definition at an accuracy that mitigates the need for pattern drilling.The 2.5D inversion application used in this work and described in Silic et al (2015) is a substantially changed version of ArjunAir (Wilson, Raiche and Sugeng, 2006), a product of CSIRO/AMIRA project P223F. The changes include a new forward model algorithm and a new inversion solver. The application enables the accurate simulation of 3D source excitation for full domain models inclusive of topography, non-conforming boundaries and very high resistivity contrasts. Solution is accurate for a geoelectrical cross-section, which is relatively constant along a strike length that exceeds the AEM system footprint.The major innovation includes a new inversion solver with adaptive regularisation, which allows the incorporation of a misfit to the reference model and the model smoothness function.Memory usage has been dramatically reduced and is estimated prior to execution. For speed the software has been parallelised using Intel message passing interface (MPI) and can be used on standard computing hardware or computing clusters. Data from survey lines with lengths exceeding 100 km can be inverted on high end laptop computers.We allow flexibility in the selection of components and in the estimation of noise.AEM inversion examples are shown for surveys from BIFs, base metals (volcanogenic massive sulfides) and geological mapping projects and the results are compared with known geology and drilling. This paper discusses the determination of the percentage of crystalline material in a natural silica deposit which would be considered harmful to health (<10 ¦m). A sample of the natural silica material was recovered and split into a number of subsamples. Samples were sieved using a conventional dry sieve to remove material >300 ¦m before testing. Particle size analyses of the fine fraction showed 75 per cent of the material was below 10 ¦m. Initially XRD and XPS were run on the samples to determine the minerals and composition of the sample. The XRD revealed strong quartz peaks and smaller tridymite peaks with a high amorphous background. The XPS indicated traces of iron, titanium and carbon with dominant silicon and oxygen peaks. The structure of the sample was investigated using the SEM. It was apparent that there were a number of larger quartz crystals (>30 ¦m) with a mix of amorphous and crystalline in the finer fraction. It was also observed that amorphous material was attached to the surface of the crystals. In order to determine the percentage of crystalline quartz a known amount of quartz was added to the sample incrementally. On each addition an XRD scan was performed and the area under the peaks recorded. Back analysis of these peaks with an assumed percentage of crystalline material in the original sample gave a crystalline content of 30 per cent. The quantity at the respirable fraction was estimated to be 18.7 per cent.

At the Orieco mine quartz veins carrying sulphides were localized in parts of an extensive fault zone in the Mathinna Beds during late Middle Palaeozoic mineralization.These deposits were subsequently exposed, and oxidation of the sulphides by percolating groundwaters resulted in the formation of gossans at the surface, and replacement close to the permanent water table of the more soluble sulphides by copper sulphides (chalcocite, coveIlite). A restricted zone containing copper oxides (cuprite, tenorite), copper carbonates (malachite, azurite), iron arsenates (scorodite, pharmacosiderite) and possibly rare copper sulphates occurred above the water table.The renewed oxidation of these deposits following mine development has been facilitated by the ready circulation of air and water combined with the formation of large free surfaces ideal for evaporation of aqueous solutions. Under these new conditions of high initial sulphate concentration, low pH, and relatively high Eh, the previously formed mineral assemblage is unstable and numerous Cu (Fe,Zn)-sulphates and Fe (Cu,Pb)-arsenates are presently forming in fractures in the fault zone and on the adit and stope surfaces for some considerable distance from the Sulphide-rich ore shoots. The observed spatial sequence of the major sulphates with respect to the sulphide-rich zones (Le. chalcanthite-antleritebrochantite and langite) is consistent with decreasing sulphate concentration and increasing pH away from the oxidizing sulphides.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.On 8 February 2016, a major ground movement occurred in the K-Link orebody of the Kencana underground mine, effectively blocking the only two access ways to the stoping area. Following mine clearance, it was found that a Solo production drill rig operator, who had been drilling in the Level 10 Extraction Drive was still underground, cut off from the rest of the mine by the ground movement.Communication, nutritional and logistic supply to the trapped operator was established with the breakthrough of two diamond drill holes. A range of technical expertise and opinions from both on and off-site were sought and two options were chosen for implementation of the rescue operation. Two outstanding features of the world's young orogenic belts are their very consistently developed suites of volcanic rocks and, it is now recognized, the rather distinctive types of mineralization they contain. Further,it is now known that these volcanic suites exhibit evolutionary patterns, and it is beginning to appear that this evolution in style of igneous activity is accompanied by a parallel evolution in style of mineralization. Specifically,podiform chromite and stratiform pyritic copper ores of Alpine ultramafic/submarine tholeiite association progressively give way to more zincian stratiform ores associated with andesites and dacites, "porphyry copper"deposits developed in quartz dioritic to dacitic plugs, and lead-zinc stratiform ores related to increasingly pyroclastic, rbyodacitic volcanism.This "coupling" is exhibited well in the volcanic arcs - the young orogenic zones-of the SW Pacific which, with tbeir abundance of youthful and commonly unmetamorphosed materials provide an opportunity for investigating, through a petrochemical approach, the possible significance of ores in the elucidation of mechanisms of lava formation. It is suggested as a working hypothesis that in the orogenic (voleanic arc) regime ores are associated with the cale-alkaline rocks because these cale-alkaline rocks are in part generated by exhalative loss, and the ores are among the manifestations of tbat loss.

The recent renewal of interest in hydrometallurgical routes for copper production has been brought about by the possible future reliance on mixed ores and lower grade deposits, environmental aspects, and energy considerations.A number of hydrometallurgical processes for the recovery of copper have recently been proposed. Flowsheets are developed for two processes which incorporate several treatment methods being experimentally studied in Australia.In the first process a cupric chloride leach is followed by electrowinning whilst the second is based on the formation of cuprous ions, stabuized by acetonitrile and subsequent disproportionation to cupric ions and metallic copper. For the purpose of comparison, flowsheets were also developed for the Arbiter and Cymet processes.Process economics are estimated for the four processes and the results are discussed in relation to competitive pyrometallurgy. None of the four hydrometallurgical processes, with possible exception of the Cymet process, appears to be competitive with established large scale and newly developed pyrometallurgical processes for chalcopyrite.However, because the economics of the individual hydrometallurgical processes depend strongly on specific conditions, a "tailored" process may be competitive with pyrometallurgy in particular circumstances.

By the use of flotation tests it was confirmed that there are two functions of oxygen in sulphide mineral flotation. Sized samples of galena and chalcopyrite were sulphidized, washed free of excess sulphide ion, and then contacted with air-saturated water for certain lengths of time. The mineral was then transferred to a sealed laboratory flotation cell containing water with a known concentration of dissolved oxygen. Xanthate and frother were added and flotation continued for 1 min.Both the extent of mineral oxidation and the concentration of dissolved oxygen markedly affected the flotation of galena and chalcopyrite. The response to a change in either variable is dependent on the level of the other, but generally best flotation occurs with the maximum degree of air saturation of the pulp. Galena flotation is hindered by oxidation of the mineral beyond a small threshold amount but a similar effect for chalcopyrite was not observed...

Not only do epithermal gold deposits provide many challenges in estimating mineral resources, the complexities of these deposits also provide technical challenges in assessing appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as social and environmental planning and management. The characteristics of epithermal gold deposits include being highly variable with respect to geometry and gold grade distribution, the presence of other economic contributors, mineralogy, texture, rock strength, weathering and alteration overprint. These characteristics influence the economic value of mining projects in an interlinked manner. Consequently, successful exploitation of epithermal deposits requires a holistic approach, coupled with the effective integration of geological data to meet all aspects of mine development decision-making. This paper presents examples of the key technical challenges encountered in estimating and mining epithermal deposits. The dissolution of gold in cyanide has been studied, using both chemical and electrochemical techniques. The electro-chemical studies have confirmed that gold may become passive in cyanide solution if its potential becomes more positive than -O· 5 V v. saturated calomel electrode (S.C.E.). The results of the conventional solution rate tests suggest that, although the solution rate is controlled by the rate of diffusion of oxygen at low oxygen and agitation levels, when these are increased the gold may become passive and its solution rate approach a steady value, or even decrease with increasing oxygen level. The passivity of gold has been shown to be of importance in the solution of small spheres of this metal, and in the extraction of gold from a calcined auriferous pyrite concentrate.INTRODUCTIONAlthough it has been appreciated for many years (McLaurin, 1893, 1895) that dissolved oxygen is a necessary adjunct to the solution of gold by the cyanide process, attempts to quantitatively assess its effect have led to conflicting results. For example, Barsky, Swainson, and Hedley (1934) reported that an increase in oxygen concentration improved the solution rate, but Beyers (1936) claimed that such an increase would reduce the rate at which the gold dissolved.By using an electrochemical approach Kudryk and Kellogg (1954) showed that the diffusion rate of either the cyanide or the oxygen was a controlling factor, and that, if the mole ratio of cyanide to oxygen concentration was greater than 10, the solution rate was proportional to oxygen concentration.These results, although they represent some of the most careful work available, were in direct contradiction to the findings of Mills (1951), who found that gold may become passive in cyanide solution, with a resultant decrease in solution rate.

Pseudoclastic hydrothermal alteration textures occur within quenched coherent dykes forming part of a subaqueous dome complex (~4 Ma) onPonza Island, Italy. These textures are similar to those observed in considerably older (~500 Ma) subaqueous volcanic rocks at a number of localities throughout the Mount Read Volcanics in Tasmania and elsewhere in ancient volcanic sequences of this type in Australia. This is significant because the processes of formation, hydrothermal alteration and secondary mineralisation of ancient volcanic sequences may be better understood if we can make comparisons with modern analogues. Observations at Ponza imply that these pseudoclastic alteration features form synvolcanically or immediately after dyke emplacement and lava extrusion. This is compatible with scenarios presented for their formation in ancient sequences in the Mount Read Volcanics, Tasmania.

The concept of a magnetic hydro-cyclone is undeveloped, possibly because studies by Bragard (1965) and the Royal School of Mines in London (Robinson, 1965) were not encouraging. Its role for the concentration of ironsands is attractive in that the classifying effect within a hydrocyclone may be comparable to the classifying effect in the gravity concentration of ironsands, and thus two steps may be achieved in one. Furthermore it should be a very simple and cheap process. The idea has been explored intermittently since 1976 but more energetically since the offering of a magnetic hydro-cyclone thickener by Boxmag Rapid (1983). This paper summarises the development and test work which are detailed elsewhere (Fricker, 1984).

Whilst much has been written in past years by geologists, scientists, mining engineers, etc., regarding the well·known and justly notorious anticlinal, or, as they are more commonly known, " saddle" reefs of Bendigo, comparatively little noticehas been given to the synclinal or "inverted saddle "reefs and their relationship with each other. In taking up the question of the synclinal folds, I recognise that it is a large undertaking to confine within the limits of a short paper, and at the same time convey a comprehensive idea of their characteristics, and the importance of their relationship with the anticlinal folds, in the general question of practical mining. However, from a practical point of view I consider the question of great importance, and if an interest in it can be awakened, more particularly among practical men, the object of this paper will be achieved.Before entering into the subject I must briefly state some facts, and perhaps some theories, in respect to the deposition of the Lower Silurian rocks, and their subsequent buckling up, as now seen on the Bendigo gold-field. At the same time, I do not intend to go very closely into the geological aspect of the question, as I wish the paper to be considered as a practical one.

A short account is given of the theory and practice of determining the true U3O8 content of ore samples by the determination of the beta and gamma activities separately, using the method of Eichholz and his associates.It is shown that, despite the variation of sample activity without change in U3O8 content, the true U3O8 value can still be found.Thorium can be determined simultaneously if this element is also present.
