Tanking of tunnels is now often specified when inflows exceed as little as 1 L/s/km with a unit distance of 100 m. To demonstrate inflows over a 100 m segment of a tunnel are less than 0.1 L/s with a standard error of 0.01 L/s by timed, gravity filled, volume measurement up and downstream of the segment, the measuring cylinder volume (L) must exceed 10 Q, where Q is the flow in L/s, and the number measurements taken and averaged must exceed 20 . If a standard error of 0.02 L/s is acceptable then 5Q2 measurements must be taken and averaged. A new strain of Thiobacil/us ferrooxidans (SPK I) has been isolated which has a higher copper to iron release ratio (2.04) than the standard T ferrooxidans (CPBI) (1.12). The diminished iron oxidizing ability enables almost quantitative release of copper (93 per cent) from a chalcopyrite-rich concentrate without interference by iron reprecipitation. In a single batch leach, Bougainville copper concentrate yielded 9.3 grams/litre soluble copper from a 4 per cent w/v suspension in 100 days at 32°C.Solvent extraction recovery of soluble copper is recommended as a final step in a leaching process.

This paper provides a history of the challenges that were experienced while treating both the clayey oxide gold ores and the supergene copper-gold ores at the Boddington Gold Mine during the period 1989 to 2001. However the bigger challenge was to find a process flow sheet that would allow the economic treatment of the large low-grade competent gold-copper resource that underlies the oxide and supergene gold resource. Metallurgical test work and engineering studies on this resource started in the mid 1990s and culminated in the approval in 2006 of the 35 Mtpa Boddington Expansion Project to treat this material. The process flow sheet provides the basis of an energy efficient comminution circuit that includes high pressure grinding rolls and a treatment circuit with gravity separation, flash and conventional flotation to produce a precious metal low-grade copper concentrate followed by cyanide leaching of the rougher-scavenger and cleaner tailings streams. The treatment circuit allows maximum removal of copper minerals prior to cyanide leaching and so provides an environmentally responsible tailings disposal circuit.

The Kevitsa Ni-Cu-PGE deposit in northern Finland contains disseminated Ni-Cu-Fe sulfides, and platinum-group minerals (PGM). The 2.05 Ga-old ultramafic-mafic, funnel-shaped intrusion is intruded into a volcanosedimentary sequence. The major ore minerals are pentlandite, hexagonal pyrrhotite and troilite, chalcopyrite, cubanite and magnetite. Pyrrhotite and pentlandite are replaced by pyrite, millerite and heazelwoodite near the surface. Nickeline, maucherite and gersdorffite are locally abundant. A pilot feed sample of 575 t of the main orebody at Kevitsa had average grades 0.45 per cent Cu, 0.36 per cent Ni, 1.85 per cent S, 0.33 g/t Pt, 0.34 g/t Pd and 0.19 g/t Au, with 0.06 per cent Ni contained in silicates. Higher PGE contents (2 - 27 ppm) occur in a vertical N-S bearing fault zone. The PGM (n = 6022) mapped in specimens of four drill holes, consist of sperrylite 34.7 vol per cent, braggite and cooperite 18.5 vol per cent, geversite 17.2 vol per cent, moncheite 14.7 vol per cent, merenskyite 6.7 vol per cent, stibiopalladinite 4.3 vol per cent, sobolevskite 1.9 vol per cent, kotulskite 0.7 vol per cent, michenerite 0.6 vol per cent, keithconnite 0.3 vol per cent, rustenburgite 0.1 vol per cent, melonite, froodite, laurite together 0.1 vol per cent and only a few grains of sudburyite, irarsite, vysotskite, erlichmanite, hongishiite, Pt-Cu-alloys, three undefined Pd and Pt bismuthinides and antimonides and a Pd-Cu-bearing Pt-Ni-Fe sulfide. Most of the PGM, 62 per cent, are enclosed in silicates, 29 per cent are intergrown with sulfides, nine per cent are within sulfides. A portion of the PGE occurs in solid solution in sulfides and arsenides. Ni flotation yielded smelter-grade concentrates averaging 12.2 per cent nickel. The average sulfide Ni recovery is 78.8 per cent and total Ni recovery is 65.3 per cent. The average Pt is 10 g/t at 55 per cent recovery, Pd 7.7 g/t at 38 per cent recovery and Au 1.6 g/t at ten per cent recovery. Cu concentrates averaged 28.6 per cent Cu with an average recovery of 78 per cent and further 11 per cent in the nickel concentrate. The copper concentrate contains 4 g/t Au at 24 per cent recovery. The average Fe to MgO ratio 17.9 is well above the targeted minimum of 4.5. The pilot results show that the previously used TETA (triethylene tetramine) can be avoided and good quality, smelter-grade concentrates can be produced from the Kevitsa ore at economical levels of recovery by conventional flotation methods.

Increasing demand for copper, lead and zinc with continuous depletion of good grade ore reserves, warrants the need for utilization of lean and complex ores of these metals. There is worldwide effort to develop suitable processes for these purposes. The present paper deals with the chloride leaching of complex base metal sulphide concentrates of two Indian deposits. A two stage leaching process is suggested keeping selectivity of metal dissolution in view.In the first stage most of the lead and zinc are reacted with dilute FeCI3 (0.3M) solutions at a temperature ono°c where major portion of the lead remains in the residue and zinc reports in solution. After taking out lead chloride by brine leaching, the residue has been treated for copper dissolution. A concentrated FeCI3 leaching at boiling temperature as well as ambient aqueous chlorine leaching have been separately tried to dissolve out the copper from the residue. Based on the results obtained, a flowsheet for the proposed process is presented.

It is a great honour to be privileged to address The Institute for a second time as President and I appreciate it more than I can say. Eight years ago in Hobart I tried to cover the development of the mineral industry in Tasmania. That was a general subject. Tonight I want to be more specific - I propose to talk to you about rutile.The choice of subject for a Presidential Address is never easy. One is addressing an informed audience and the best one can do is to try to crystallize a particular subject and to present it in a form that willbe of interest to those who listen.I looked carefully at the addresses given by our Presidents over the past seven or eight years. The titles are impressive, the content excellent, and the length, as published, much greater than I had hoped.It is therefore with some trepidation that I have chosen as a subject one only of the three crystal forms of titanium dioxide. This subject is not as limited as may at first appear.There are two aspects with which I can deal - the mineral itself, which has become familiar as the major product of the East Coast beach sand operations, and the lesser-known "synthetic" product, which is the major pigment in almost all the white paints in common use today, and in cosmetics and white-walled tyres and toothpaste, and even the better types of fine papers. The synthetic form of rutile is' the "whitest"of white pigments.

The Australian mining industry is at an interesting stage in its development. Of the large number of mining companies in Australia, some are still solely domestic in their focus, others have made their first tentative forays offshore, and others are global players of significance in tile world industry.   It is not long ago that the entire industry was almost exclusively domestic in its focus. Very few companies before the early 1980s had ventured offshore, and those that did so were considered quite risque. The initial moves were made mainly by large companies who could afford to lose the funds expended in getting started in a range of offshore locations.   Almost all offshore jurisdictions were considered to be high risk compared to the safety of home - I recall the extreme difficulty I encountered in the mid 1980s in endeavouring to persuade a Board to joint venture into an attractive gold opportunity in South East Asia.   One of the problems inhibiting the offshore development of the Australian mining industry was that some mining companies had had unfortunate experiences offshore. Others had heard of those who had had unfortunate experiences offshore and, as such, 'offshore' gained a bad name and the more risk averse boards and. management of the time simply put the whole idea into the 'too hard' basket.

This paper reviews the development and operation of a small underground tin mine in NE Tasmania. Tin mineralisation was discovered in the Lottah area in the 1880s with early alluvial and eluvial workings leading to the development of large low grade open pit operations. Apart from short lived activities operations ceased in 1915. Intensive exploration in 1978 - 1981 outlined substantial tonnages of low grade tin mineralisation (0.2% Sn) of open pit material. An underground ore body was also located (800 000 tonnes 0.6 per cent Sn). Spectrum Resources Australia Pty Limited acquired a 98 per cent interest in the property in 1988. Mine and mill development began in early 1989 based on an underground mine utilising trackless mining using room and pillar with fill stoping. The milling circuit involves primary jaw crushing, Barmac secondary crushing to 1 mm, Mogensen and DSM screens with jigs and tables to make a wet concentrate. Final tin concentrates are produced by high tension and magnetic separation. Planned production rates are 500 t/day with a mine life of six to seven years.

In March 2002 Newcrest Mining Ltd commissioned a 4 Mtpa gold-copper concentrator at its Cadia Valley Operations in New South Wales. This paper presents the design and construction considerations, commissioning and ramp up issues related to start up of the concentrator as well as current performance and future expansion plans. Commissioning of the plant was the culmination of six years of project planning, from discovery of the resource during the Cadia Hill drill out campaign in November 1996 to project implementation and plant operation. Current resource estimates stand at around 50 Mt with an average grade of 2.4 g/t gold and 0.8 per cent copper. At current processing rates the project life is expected to exceed ten years. The processing plant comprises a 9.75 m (32 ft) diameter Fully Autogenous (AG) mill, a single 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter ball mill, pebble crushers, gravity gold recovery circuit and flotation plant. Upgrades to the existing infrastructure and manning requirements at Cadia will be discussed as well as the resultant impacts on operating costs for the operation. The processing plant was expected to deliver 290 000 ounces of gold and 30 000 tonnes of copper in concentrate in its first full year of operation and progress against that goal will be presented.

For establishing sustainable material cycle process in human system, a brand new concept should be created, which could recycle the waste materials, which are land-filled and discarded under present economical situation. The concept of 'RtoS' (Reserve (of waste) to Stock) to create 'artificial deposit' of the materials concentrate is one of the best ideas to be applied. From this viewpoint, separation technology, in especial, solid phase separation such as mineral processing technology contributes much to the concentration, making 'artificial deposit' with less energy consumption compared with melting and/or dissolving technologies. Results of rare metals concentration in the e-waste are also introduced as an example with combining novel comminution and parts/powder separation.

Part of the PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mine production is in the process of transitioning from the deep ore zone (DOZ) mine to the deep mill level zone (DMLZ) mine. The DMLZ mine is the next lift in the caving series and lies 500 m below the current DOZ footprint.In order to reduce the need for a very expensive additional ventilation system for the DMLZ mine, it was decided to reconfigure some infrastructure and upgrade the performance of the three existing DOZ mixed flow ventilation fans in situ, reducing the new fans required to two. This was far less costly than providing complete new installations.These fans are installed in individual underground chambers in DOZ mine exhaust drifts and connected to the DMLZ mine exhaust drifts system in 7 m × 7 m airways size, through sets of 6 m diameter by 500 m high raises.The upgrade process involved replacement of motors, fan shafts and bearings. The existing 1600 kW DOZ mixed flow fans are 3500 mm diameter and operate at a speed of 595 rev/min and were originally designed to deliver 390 m3/s at 3.3 kPa. Efficiency optimisation may be required at a later date.The upgraded DMLZ fans are required to deliver 425 m3/s at 3.7 kPa and it was necessary to increase in motor size and speed to 2200 kW at 710 rev/min. The district specially referred to in this paper comprises the very gently sloping country extending from the western shores of Port Phillip from the mouth of the Yarra to Footscray along the Bacchus Marsh railway to near that town thence in a southerly direction to the Little River, and along that river to the coast, 1 as may be seen on the accompanying map. Almost the whole of this area is covered by volcanic rocks, consisting of pumerous sheets of basalt, which have been poured out of various volcanic hills in the districts, such as Mts. Atkinson and Cotteril, near Melton; Mt. Maryand Bald Hill, 12 and 16 miles respectively N.W. of Werribee; and vents in different parts of the parishes of Tarneit, Mouyong, Mooradoranook, Pyweitjorrk, and Derrimut. These volcanoes were in an active state of eruption during a late period of the earth's historyprobably the late Pliocenll, or still younger Pleistocene.Occupying a narrow strip of country, for most of the distance along the coast from Williamstown to past the mouth of the Little River, there occur deposits of still younger age, belonging to the Recent period. These lie on the basalt, and extend for distances varying from a few chains to more than a mile back from the beach. They comprise superficial deposits of blown sand, and raised beaches, composed of marine sands...

Chalcopyrite concentrate was combusted in oxygen-nitrogen atmospheres, the composition of which ranged from 1-100 per cent oxygen. Factors studied included particle size, experimental temperature and oxygen concentration. The study was assisted by chemical and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and temperature measurements of single particles. Size reduction occurring after melting was found to have a major effect on the overall reaction time. Thus time to attain ignition was largely determined by the original particle size, whereas combustion time was independent of this factor. For particles larger than 40 I'm in air the time to attain ignition predominated. The maximum temperatures measured for single particles were the result of pyrite present in the concentrate. Chalcopyrite did not attain thesame temperatures. Vaporization, either as CU(g) or CuO(g) lImited the temperature. Maximum temperatures measured for single particles of pyrite ranged from 1610°C in 14 per cent oxygen to 2360°C in 100 per cent oxygen (both at 700°C). Measured temperatures were compared with those calculated from a diffusion-based model.

The adsorption mechanism of three different O,OÆ-di-alkyl-dithiophosphate (dtp) collectors, K[S2P(OR)2] with R = Et, i-Bu and i-Amyl, on the surface of synthetic chalcocite (Cu2S) was studied by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy. The morphology changes on the conditioned Cu2S surfaces, in the collector concentration range 0.1 - 10 mM, were also monitored with scanning electron microscope (SEM). In order to assign Cu(I)-dtp species on the surface of Cu2S, the corresponding bulk Cu(I)-dtp compounds, which are clusters of the monovalent copper containing either Cu6(antiprismatic) or Cu8(cubic) cores, were synthesised, and characterised by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS and static 65Cu NMR. Further investigations on the crystal habits of the bulk systems were carried out by powder x-ray diffraction and SEM. A comparative analysis of the 31P chemical shift and chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) data estimated from the experimental NMR spectra of the polycrystalline bulk Cu(I) dialkyldithiophosphate complexes was used for assigning the 31P resonance lines in the NMR spectra of the collector treated Cu2S powder samples. The species formed on the synthetic Cu2S surfaces were assigned to polycrystalline phases of: Cu6L6 with L = Et2dtpû, Cu6L6 and Cu8L6(S) with L = i-Bu2dtpû, and Cu8L6(S) with L = i-Amyl2dtpû. A heterophase autocatalytic step process of both formation and growth of solid CuxLy (L = R2dtp, x = 6 or 8 and y = 6) complexes on the collector treated Cu2S surface is proposed. A possible role of the oxidised form of dithiophosphate collectors, bis[di-alkyl-thiophosphoryl]-disulfane (disulfide), is discussed in terms of a specific self-redox reaction. The second order quadrupolar lineshapes in 65Cu NMR spectra were simulated and the interaction parameters, CQ and hQ, for the bulk dialkyldithiophosphato-copper(I) complexes were obtained.

Segregation roasting was used to recover more than 85 per cent of copper from crushed, minus 14 mesh refractory furnace-lining bricks. A plus 14 mesh fraction: which was high in copper, could be recycled directly to the smelter, giving an overall recovery of approximately 90 per cent. An oxidation roast at about 700°C was necessary, before segregation roasting, to convert copper sulphides and copper metal to sulphates and oxides. Withsegregatron temperatures in the range 600°-650°C the quantities of solid carbon and NaCI required are 2-5 per cent and 1 per cent respectively. P.V.C. coating from scrap copper wire can be used instead of NaCl as asource of hydrogen chloride for the segregation reaction.

Ernest Henry Mine (EHM), located in north-western Queensland, is an underground copper/gold sublevel caving operation currently producing over 6 Mt/a of ore. The mass mining method of sublevel caving (SLC) used at EHM involves systematically blasting a series of uphole rings in parallel ore drives and drawing the broken ore using a top-down approach. Each ore drive contains multiple precharged rings to prevent having to charge in close proximity to the brow of the previously fired ring; however, the current initiation system still involves ‘hooking up’ all detonator lead cords of the first precharged ring. The unstable nature of a rill and working close to a brow presents hazards to personnel completing the hook-up process. There is also a business risk of ore loss when damaged ground support completely prevents access to the next precharged ring. If the hook-up step could be eliminated, the risk to personnel and the business would be significantly reduced.EHM engaged Orica Mining Services in 2016 to trial their WebGenTM 100 – wireless electronic blasting system (WEBSTM) for the first time in an underground mining environment. Having successfully signal-tested the equipment, two test holes were initiated, followed by a single production ring and then multiple production rings. In total, 30 production rings were successfully fired underground at EHM in 2017. To do this, WEBSTM was successfully integrated into EHM’s current charging and firing process, resulting in no business delays or loss to production. None of the 30 rings required hooking up and all were initiated from the surface with no personnel underground. A high level of ownership from all personnel involved ensured the trial was a success, and provided scope for wireless detonators to be used successfully on a large scale – both at EHM and other sublevel caving operations. Advances in technology have led to larger and deeper open pit mines and, consequently, also increased the potential economic impact associated with slope failures. If the ultimate aim of mining operations is to maximise project profit, it is surprising to see related research activities have mostly been focusing on technical areas such as slope stability modelling, but with limited studies conducted to date to assess the relationship between geotechnical uncertainties and economic risk. Given most major decisions in the mining industry nowadays are made by management staff with financial background, any design approach that would help to link slope stability analysis results with monetary values would no doubt enhance communication between geotechnical practitioners and decision makers. This paper presents a study which assesses economic impact of slope failures to assist in mine planning. The study also estimates the impact of slope failures on project value, which would enable economic risks associated with pit slope designs to be closely examined. The proposed risk assessment techniques, used by financial institutions for many years to assess portfolio risks, can assist geotechnical practitioners in quantifying risks of slope failures. Risk-adjusted concepts are also suggested to assist management in selecting a slope design with optimal risk and return ratio.
