A STUDY of the mechanical properties of the alloys of copper and silver led to the discovery that the solubility of silver in copper was greatly different from that generally supposed, therefore some work was done to determine the solubility with greater accuracy than had previously been achieved. After the work had been completed, two papers were published1 giving solubility figures which agreed closely with one another and with the work described herein. A detailed comparison of that work with the present will be given later. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS The copper used in making the alloys was electrolytic ingot of high purity. The silver was prepared by precipitation as chloride from nitric acid solution, followed by fusion of the washed precipitate with sodium carbonate and potassium nitrate. This method gives metal containing at least 99.99 per cent silver. The copper was first melted under charcoal in a small electric resistance furnace and the silver added as pure silver, it being unnecessary to make any intermediate alloys. After thorough stirring the metal was poured into a mold of suitable form. The alloys contained between 0.008 and 0.015 percent of oxygen. Small amounts of oxide were visible under the microscope, but it is not believed this would have much effect on the results. Copper-silver alloys are notorious for segregation, consequently a few experiments were carried out to find a form of casting with as little segregation as possible. A mold 6 in. long and 1/2-in. dia. was first used, and an alloy nominally containing 5 per cent silver was cast in it, while some of the same alloy was poured directly into water to obtain the maximum rate of cooling possible. IN 1938 Ralston4 reviewed the many attempts to find a satisfactory collector for the separation of cassiterite from its ores and in 1944 Dean and Ambrose2 summarized some further attempts. Generally, soaps and amines are effective but nonselective collectors. We have discovered that reagents containing either the polar group -SO4- or _S03- are excellent collectors for cassiterite and promise to be selective.1 The response to these reagents of cassiterite and of minerals commonly associated with it was studied, using the captive-bubble technique. Using these fundamental data, the practicability of separation and concentration of tin was investigated by flotation tests in a 2000gram Denver cell. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Reagents All inorganic reagents were of Analar grade. The preparation and purification of sodium cetyl sulphate, cetyl trimethyl-ammonium bromide, laurylamine and cetylamine have been previously described.5 The other collectors were commercial surface-active agents, which were used without purification. Tests Captive-bubble Tests and Cylinder Flotation Tests have been previously described.5-10 The full lines shown in the figures relating solution composition to contact (flotation) distinguish solutions in which contact (flotation) is possible from those in which it is not. The curve is derived by successive approximation and the accuracy is ±0.2 pH units and ± 5 mg. per liter of collector or depressant. Solution compositions for which it was shown experimentally that contact or flotation is possible are marked by a circle, those for which it is not possible, by a cross, and those for which it is doubtful by a cross within a circle. It is assumed that at all other solution compositions within (without) the curve, contact or flotation is possible (not possible). After testing in the collector solution, the mineral was removed, washed, and tested by the captive-bubble method in water, or floated in a cylinder with frother only. In this way the composition of solutions in which a mineral was conditioned but in which properties of the collector solution prevented contact or flotation can be defined. The composition of solutions in which conditioning was possible lie between the full and broken curve, and the experimental results are indicated by a square. The curves show the limits of composition of solutions in which flotation in a cell would be possible but many factors other than those considered in these tests determine recovery and grade of a given mineral in practice. I. INTRODUCTION IT is safe to say that of all the different materials that go to make up electrical machinery, iron is the most important. Upon its -magnetic and electrical quality depends not only the efficiency of the machine but, to a very large extent, the cost. Aside from the mechanical strength, there are three characteristics of iron that are of importance in this connection, viz., magnetic hysteresis, electrical resistance, and magnetic permeability. In the homopolar machine, where the magnetic flux is unidirectional, permeability is the only important factor, but in all other machines the flux is reversed in one or more parts and causes losses due to hysteresis and eddy currents. The eddy-current loss depends largely upon the electrical resistance of the iron; the higher the resistance the lower the loss, under otherwise identical conditions. These hysteresis and eddy-current losses cause heating of the machine, and as they depend upon the magnetic density in the iron, this density must be regulated so that the heating shall not be excessive. If the hysteresis and eddy-current Josses and the permeability of the magnetic circuit will permit an increase in the magnetic density, or, in other words, a decrease in the amount of iron, this in turn will mean a decrease in the amount of copper needed, with a consequent decrease in the copper loss. It is thus seen that; indirectly as well as directly, the above characteristics have an important bearing on both the efficiency and the cost of electrical machinery. In general, it may be said that iron for electrical machinery should have the following characteristics: (1) low hysteresis loss, (2) high electrical resistance, and (3) high permeability. These are the characteristics that investigators have been striving to attain since electrical machinery first came into use.

NECESSITY FOR PRICE FIXING DURING the latter part of 1916 and the early months of 1917, clue to war activities, there was a threatened shortage of coal which resulted in panic among consumers and a rush to obtain coal at once at any price. As a result of this insistent demand for immediate delivery, prices were bid up by the consumers to unprecedented heights; spot coal which had previously been selling at from $1.50 to 82 per ton was bid up to $5, $6, and, in exceptional cases, as high as $7.50 or more per ton. Then when the April, 1917, contract period arrived, contracts could be made only at prices ranging from $3 up to $5 and $6 per ton for the year's delivery. This condition caused such a demoralization of the business, and so much complaint, that some action to regulate prices was considered essential by the National Administration. LANE-PEABODY AGREEMENT In May, 1917, a committee under the chairmanship of F. S. Peabody, of Chicago, was appointed by the Council of National Defense, through Mr. Lane, to consider the whole question of bituminous coal. This committee, with the Secretary of the Interior, Mr. Lane, after numerous meetings and long negotiations with the operators throughout the country, announced on June 29 an agreement between the Committee and the producers, fixing a tentative maximum price for bituminous coal throughout the country at $3 per net ton f.o.b. mines, to which was added 25 c. for selling commission to wholesalers. This plan was based on the idea of fixing a maximum price, high enough to greatly-stimulate production, with the expectation that the laws of supply and demand would, with ample production, operate to maintain fair and just prices for coal throughout the country.

BECAUSE of their layerlike structure, zinc crystals exhibit strong anisotropies for almost all physical and chemical properties. This should, and indeed does, greatly influence the plasticity of zinc for various crystal orientations. At low temperatures, the investigator of this plastic anisotropy is plagued by the great variety of deformation modes that operate. However, at high temperatures (250° to 419°C) only two deformation modes predominate: basal (0001) and prismatic (1010) glide. Furthermore, since strain hardening is virtually absent at high temperatures, the plasticity for these two modes of deformation can be very simply described by means of two equations of state. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the experimental behavior of basal and prismatic glide in zinc crystals, and to interpret this behavior in terms of other physical properties (in particular, the thermal expansion coefficients and the elastic constants) using the theory of dislocations. Fig. 1 defines the two planes of the zinc structure that will be discussed. Glide occurs very readily on the basal planes at all temperatures, and there is a very large literature on this subject. Much of the literature has been reviewed by Schmid and Boas;' it will not be reviewed here. Kolesnikovl was the first to show that if basal glide is circumvented by stressing a zinc crystal parallel to the basal planes (giving zero shear-stress on the basal planes) then, at temperatures above about 320°C, glide on the first-order prism planes occurs. His results have recently been confirmed by Cahn, Bear, and Bell." These previous workers have established the existence and crystallographic elements of prismatic glide; the present paper is concerned with the stress, strain rate, and temperature relations of prismatic glide as contrasted with basal glide. Experimental Methods The crystals were square ones, 6x6 mm, that had been grown in precision Pyrex tubes by a method that is described in detail elsewhere.' Most of the crystals were 99.999+ pct Zn (New Jersey Zinc Co. CP grade). Some were alloyed with 0.1 -+-0.005 atomic pct Cd, and chemical analysis showed that almost all of the added cadmium persisted through the crystal-growing process. For measurements of nonbasal glide, crystals were oriented with their basal planes parallel to both the rod axis and one of the flat faces of the square cross section. However, the orientation of the close-packed directions [1210] with respect to the rod-axis was variable. For basal glide measurements, the angle between the basal plane and the specimen axis was 35". The orientations were measured by the Gren-inger back-reflection X-ray method. The problem of finding a suitable method of gripping the crystals was the most serious experimental obstacle that arose. Because of the large plastic anisotropy of zinc, the usual gripping methods were unsatisfactory. Some methods that were tried were: high melting-point solder, making heads on the ends by locally melting a crystal, and electroplating nickel on the ends to form enlarged portions. For all these methods, the regions of the grips were weaker than the crystals themselves. Finally, two methods were decided upon: bend tests and direct machining of tensile specimens. In the bend tests, specimens were loaded as simple beams so that gripping was not a problem. The beams were 1 in. long and the axis of bending was parallel to the hexagonal axis of the crystals. For the crystals that were machined into tensile specimens, brass bars with slots in them were used to support the crystals, and thereby minimize the distortions due to machining. The crystals were glued into the brass bars with plastic cement which was later dissolved away with acetone. See Fig. 2, left. No clamps were used near the crystals and the machining was done using a milling machine with a fly-cutter. The tool bit was very sharply pointed to minimize burnishing. The feed was less than 1 mil per cut. The depth of cut was 2 mil for roughing cuts, and % mil for the finishing cuts. This machining method produced surface layers of tiny recrys-tallized grains only 2 to 3 mil deep, and the bodies of the crystals were not measurably disturbed. After the crystals had been machined and removed from the brass holders, they were chemically polished until about 5 mil had been removed from all their surfaces. The polishing reagent consisted of equal parts of concentrated HNO,, 30 pct H3O and ethyl alcohol; it is described in detail elsewhere." A typical crystal is shown in Fig. 2, right. The I-shaped faces are normal to the hexagonal axis of the crystal; otherwise the projections at the ends would simply shear off when the crystal was loaded. As sphalerite is such a common constituent of many types of ore, the present investigation was undertaken to determine what its relations are to the other minerals in the deposits, and also whether these are of any genetic significance. The data presented herewith were obtained from a mineralographic study of about 200 ore specimens from some 43 different localities, represented by suites of specimens in the Cornell University collection. A major obstacle to the use of wetting agents in .secondary recovery by water flooding is the adsorption of the agents on the sand. As a result of adsorption, the surfactant always lags behind the floodwater front. Consideration of the chromatographic theory of adsorption indicates that the detergents will not lag as much if used in very high concentrations. An investigation was made of the possibility of using high concentrations economically by flowing slugs of wetting agents followed by normal flood water. The experiments consisted of adsorption studies on Alundum powder and Berea sandstone. Flow rests on a 12-in. Alundum core and 22-in. Berea core were used to determine rate of detergent movement. The results of the flow experiments indicate that the relative rate of surfactant advance is, indeed, sensitive to the concentration of the agent. A 10 per cent slug moved with a rate that war 78 to 95 per cent as fast as the rate of advance of the flood water. By contrast, one with 25 ppm (the number of parts of commercial detergent in a million parts of water on a weight basis) concentration moved less than one-fourth as fast as the flood water, and calculations indicate that in very long porous systems the rate of movement of the lower concentrations will be a small fraction of the rate of advance of the flood front. The results. of the adsorption studies were utilized to calculate the rate of advance of the detergent when only the initial concentration was known. The calculated rates showed substantial agreement with the experimental flow tests in the high concentration ranges. The adsorption results were also used to estimate the cost of the materials for a slug-type surfactant flood in the field. In addition to the faster rates of movement, the concentrated detergent slugs removed much more oil than the dilute solutions. However, the effectiveness of the slug process depends on many variables. The quantity of oil removed is increased markedly by increasing the flooding rate. The efficiency is also influenced by the type of crude, type of reservoir rock and initial water saturation. Therefore, a careful analysis of each reservoir system is required before the economic value of the process can be determined. INTRODUCTION It is well known that the displacement of oil by invading water during water flooding is far from complete. It is generally agreed that the unrecovered oil is retained in the porous medium by the capillary forces which may be relatively large compared to the forces generated by the flowing water. Therefore, it was logical that some early workers should turn to surface-active materials to reduce the capillary forces to facilitate the release of oil. As early as 1927,' a patent was granted for the use of surface-active materials in water flooding. In 1932, when soap solutions were passed through Bradford and Venango sands, it was reported that the results were inconclusive, erratic and that "further investigation is needed to determine exactly the function of the solution and to obtain a clearer insight into the phenomena involved."' Some of the modern scientific reports conclude with a similar statement,' showing that the lack of agreement on the mechanism of oil removal by wetting agents is still very widespread even though several comprehensive studies have been reported.'." Although there is a lack of agreement as to the general effectiveness of the detergents for water flooding, most investigators do agree that all of the common detergents are strongly adsorbed onto the solid surfaces of the reservoir. In the early calculations it appeared that all additives would be lost before reaching much of the formation area which contained the additional oil to be removed. Experiments indicated that if the usual small waterflood concentrations of wetting agents were used, the rate of advance of detergent through the formation would be only a small fraction of the rate of advance of the flood front. Indeed, some investigators4 felt that the use of wetting agents would never be economically feasible because of their adsorption. For example, DunningG estimated that the wetting agent in concentrations of 25 ppm, would advance only 0.05 times as fast as the flood front. Ojeda, et al,' found that a surfactant in a concentration of 10 ppm moved less than 0.01 times as fast as the flood front. It is significant, however, that both investigators found that increased concentrations of wetting agents moved faster, relative to the flood front, than solutions at the lower concentrations. Ojeda showed that an extrapolation of his data indicated a relative rate of 0.5 at 1 per cent concentration, while Dunning6 estimated a relative rate of 0.46 for a 1 per cent concentration. It was obvious that these concentrations could not be used for continuous injection because the cost of the injected detergent would far exceed the value of additional oil produced. The practical study of corrosion requires consideration of its economic aspects. It must be based on sound scientific principles, but it should be borne in mind that probably the most important object of a corrosion test is to determine what metal in corrosion-resisting construction will produce the greatest operating profit. Thus the corrosion test must be directly connected with money values or it is not a practical corrosion test. This, perhaps unusual, connection between corrosion and economics is partially due to the fact that corrosion deals only with the time factor or duration of equipment, and it is almost the only test which deals with this feature. In these statements a departure is made from the academic definition of the word corrosion and it is done deliberately. The use of the term corrosion is unusual. It is as though we spoke of a tensile test as a "breaking" test. We are not interested primarily in the break but in the strength of the metal. There is no English word which expresses our main interest in corrosion-testing, but let us have clearly in mind that we make corrosion tests to prevent corrosion. Our real interest is in this corrosion-prevention, not in the corrosion. Previous to 1922, it was common comment that "it is impossible to determine the course of corrosion by laboratory testing.'' This statement was true at that time in that the technique of laboratory testing for corrosion resistance was so vague that tests in the laboratory gave untrue results almost as often as true ones. This was so, even in the simple case of determining which one of two metals better resists a given solution. While this is no longer true the number of misleading "corrosion tests" still being ground out by laboratories is too large in the light of our present knowledge. There are two important features of corrosion testing whose neglect is a large contributing factor to misleading results: (1) The economic relations of the corrosion tests to other tests; (2) testing technique. Regarding economic relations J. F. Thompson l has said: "The use of any particular metal is rarely based upon the sole property of resistance to corrosion. DENSE-MEDIA processes utilize the familiar laboratory float-and-sink procedure on a commercial scale. Just as wood chips float on water and sand sinks, so coal floats and refuse sinks when placed in a medium intermediate in specific gravity between the coal and refuse. Liquids intermediate in specific gravity between coal and refuse used in commercial plants are of four types: (1) organic liquids of high specific gravity-halogenated hydrocarbons; (2) dissolved salts in water; (3) pseudo liquids obtained by suspending solids, such as sand or magnetite, in water, and, (4) fluidizing a mass of sand or other solids by air currents. Those most widely used for cleaning coal are solutions of calcium chloride in water and a suspended sand or magnetite pseudo liquid. Laboratory float-and-sink testing is an intermittent operation during which every opportunity is given for particles lighter than the medium to float and particles heavier to sink. Commercial processes are continuous; vertical and horizontal currents of the separating medium occur as either part of the process or unavoidedly produced by the introduction of feed and withdrawal of products, 'so that the exact separation of the laboratory technique is not duplicated by commercial processes. However, separations close to the theoretical are obtained in commercial machines by careful technical control of the process. Most machines in commercial installations are crowded to get as much out of the equipment as possible, so that careful technical control is necessary is get the recoveries and grade of product desired. Sizes usually cleaned are plus ¼ in. or plus 1/8 -in. in the United States and plus 1/16-in. in Great Britain. Coal as small as 1 mm. has been cleaned in some experimental installations. The separation of coal from refuse in sizes finer than about 1/8-in. is made difficult by viscosity effects and hence at the present time cleaning is confined to the coarser sizes. Technical advances in the art of cleaning coal by dense-media processes is progressing rapidly and it is likely that equipment, media, and procedures will be developed to clean sizes down to 0.5 mm. efficiently and at low cost.

OVER the past few years, metallic arc welding has been extended to steels of the hardenable type. As compared with other methods of fabrication, production has been facilitated, service performance frequently has been improved, and the overall results have been so favorable that engineers and production men have placed great emphasis on this application of welding. The metallurgist and welding engineer, however, have been confronted with new problems, since, for one reason, the harder steels are more apt to crack and special precautions must be taken if sound joints are to be procured. Some of the factors that are pertinent to this problem are metallurgical, and it is an object of this contribution to discuss steel manufacture and processing methods and to show how their control assists in reducing the hazard of cracking. By this time, the problem of cracking specifically underbead cracking, or "hard cracks," or parent-metal cracks-is well known, and a large amount of work has been published, both here and abroad, dealing with this subject.1 The tests described are made under restraint to facilitate cracking and, are so designed that a semiquantitative, or at least a relative, value of the cracking tendency is obtained. As one would expect, it has been reported that the incidence of cracking increases with the carbon and alloy content of the steel. More specifically, the cracking tendency is said to increase with the hardenability of the steel, though it is now recognized that the situation is not so simple. The phenomenon itself, on the other hand, has been but loosely described, and it is in only broad generalizations that this cracking has been related to steel metallurgy. Thus, while it has been abundantly demonstrated that the hardenable aircraft steel, S.A.E. 4130, must tend to crack when arc-welded, the problem still remains of why two lots of the same composition and the same hardenability can vary so greatly in cracking tendency, or what it is about the prior metallurgical history that so strongly affects the results. Further, while the efficacy of preheating and postheating in preventing cracking is recognized and utilized in production, the mechanism by which they function seems not to have been described. These points are thought to be significant in the production of steel for fabrication by metallic arc welding and, hence, of interest to mill and process metallurgists and welding engineers. Consequently, it is another object of this paper to discuss the mechanism of parent-metal cracking, including the influence of the condition of the steel and the control of cracking by manipulation of the time-temperature conditions during and after welding. A new method of rating the cracking. tendency is also discussed, and the results of the test are related to steel composition and structure or prior history. INTRODUCTION Though the use of continuous mining machines consolidated the operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading in one machine that would theoretically provide uninterrupted production, it was soon realized that the face haulage and roof support operations remained as major impediments to continuous production. The ability to provide not only continuous cutting and loading, but also continuous haulage and roof support (see Fig. I), was the basis for the introduction of mechanized longwall systems in this country from Europe in 1951. The early systems employed friction props for roof support, but were to become obsolete shortly after introduction of the first hydraulically powered, self-advancing supports in 1960. Since then, use of the longwall technique has grown to the point where it is currently providing more than 5% of the annual output of underground coal mines in the United States. The shortwall system had its origin in Australia, but was first introduced into this country in 1962 following the development of powered roof supports. It, too, provides for continuous cutting, loading, and roof support (see Fig. 2), but has not experienced the widespread popularity of longwall due to its inherent inability to easily provide for continuous haulage. While there are in the neighborhood of 100 longwall systems currently in operation in this country, there are only a handful of short- wall operations providing production of slightly more than 907 184.7 t/a (1,000,000 stpy) Both of these systems provide uninterrupted roof support for face operations by means of hydraulically powered steel roof supports. In each case, the coal removal consists of open-end cuts made from the narrow end of a large rectangular pillar (panel) which has been blocked out by continuous miners developing entries around its perimeter. THIS paper is a brief description of the design and equipment of a new coal mine in southern Illinois, which has many features not common practice in shaft coal mining and which is laid out and equipped for such unusually large capacity that it promises soon to become one of the largest mining operations of its kind. Shaft sinking for the mine, New Orient, was commenced in May, 1921, by the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co. In October, 1924, the plant was practically completed and was producing over 6000 tons of coal per day. There is good prospect that within a few years, when the mine is fully developed and manned, the output will attain a daily rate of 12,000 tons. The coal seam at New Orient lies approximately horizontal, about 500 ft. below the surface, and may be said to run from 9 to 12 ft. in thickness. The tendency in Franklin County has been toward large mining units (5000 to 6000 tons per day) with great care being given to protection against fire and explosion hazards, and usually with quite elaborate surface plants permitting careful preparation of the coal into graded sizes comparable with those made in the anthracite region. The field is unionized, with uniform conditions of wages for various classes of work, hours, etc., and the Illinois mining laws are quite specific with regard to fireproofing and safety measures. These conditions make it difficult for any but well-equipped and well-operated mines to meet the competition of the numerous fine properties of which this county can justly be proud. The coal company's property was already developed on the western side by the Orient. mine-a much visited and written about operation (with which many of you are possibly familiar through the Department of Mines' film "The Story of Coal ") which until recently held the 8-hr. production record with 8218 tons and usually ran quite consistently with production of slightly over 6000 tons per day. Experience at Orient was naturally one of the greatest influences in determining the location and character of the New Orient.

Prior to 1908 the oil production in the State of California had been almost entirely a heavy fuel oil, with a high flash point, but changed within a short period to a large percentage of refining oil with a low flash, by reason of the heavy production of light oil coming in from the Santa Maria field, the Midway field, and the increased production of the Fullerton field. This is clearly shown in the following tabulation of California's pro- The bringing in of these high percentages of light oil with their dangerous low flash and the increasing demand for the refined products necessitated the devising of some cheap and efficient means of quickly separating the lighter elements either in the field or at the main distributing points; also it became necessary to remove the excessive percentage of water which many of the light oils carried in emulsion. Port Harford Plant Probably the first important attempt to top light oil in California by other means than the ordinary stills was tried about 1908 by the Union Oil Co., at its plant at Port Harford, San Luis Obispo County, with Santa Maria oils. The process was the invention of Hubert G. Burroughs who afterward obtained a patent for the process, No. 998,837, dated July 25, 1911. For many years mine surveyors and exploration engineers have sought an accurate means of transferring meridian underground by using the gyro-compass. These efforts have generally failed, either because they were inaccurate or because the size and cost of the unit were prohibitive. During the past ten years, however, great strides have been made. Autonetics in California has developed a comparatively light-weight (100-lb) gyro-theodolite, and the Institute for Mine Surveying at Clausthal Mining Academy in Germany has developed an instrument that is accurate to within 20" to 30" of arc. Concurrently, Minneapolis-Honeywell has produced an astounding gyro, the size of a salt shaker, that weighs less than 0.5 lb and compares favorably in performance with the 50-lb gyros of conventional design. This unit, designed for missile guidance, should be adaptable for surveying small boreholes. Given the proper interest and approach from the engineering fraternity, excellent gyrocompasses could probably be available for accurate underground survey work at nominal cost within the next three years. Principles of the Gyro-Compass: The gyrocompass, used for 50 years as a navigational instrument in ships and aircraft, senses the turning axis of the earth and points out true polar north. It does this by employing the earth's rotation, the force of gravity, and the precession characteristics of a gyro. For further details the reader is referred to several excellent publications'"3 covering the principles and application of the gyroscope. The heart of the gyro-compass is the gyroscope, or rapidly spinning wheel, which rigidly maintains its angular orientation in inertial space. Free gyros employ universal joints to allow the wheel axle to maintain its rigid spatial orientation independent of base motion disturbances. Free gyros are independent of the earth's turning and are not north-seeking. Only as they might be initially oriented parallel to the earth's turning axis could any north indication be obtained. In practice, the free gyro tends to drift off its set position and lose its accuracy. The Sperry-Sun Well Surveying Co. instrument (5M in O. D.) is of this free gyro type. It is counterbalanced, however, against the rotational effects of the earth, so that orientation of the spinning axis will be maintained throughout the survey.

The Gulf Coastal plain of the southern United States is that area bordering for a large part, the Gulf of Mexico and extending inland and northward to the main interior highland region. It is more or less V-shaped and includes the States of Florida, extreme southern Alabama, all .of Mississippi and Louisiana, the eastern and southern half of Arkansas, and the eastern, southeastern, and southern portions of Texas. While the contents of this paper apply to. the Gulf Coastal plain in general, they are intended to refer more specifically to that portion of the plain included between the 90th and 97th meridians, and the 29th and 33d parallels, an area that may be described geographically as comprising western Mississippi, all of Louisiana, part of eastern and all of south-eastern Texas. It is within this area that numerous and prolific oil pools have been developed during the last 17 years.

Earlier studies of the mechanism of flotation showed that coal flotation products are contaminated by composite coal and mineral particles. The mineral matter of these particles has the dual effect of increasing the specific gravity and decreasing the coal surface of the particle available for bubble attachment. The present study showed that these particles are more loosely held in the froth column than the high grade coal particles, especially in the coarser sizes. Consequently, it is possible in the laboratory to produce a secondary concentration of the product by sprinkling the froth product with water to wash these loosely held particles from the froth during formation and recovery. To improve coal flotation, Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s research department has been working on a number of related problems based on both physical and chemical factors. The ideal is of course full understanding of the interrelated effects of both sets of factors. However, detailed studies1 of each physical factor have produced immediately usable results in commercial coal flotation and are providing the basis for our current work on the effect of chemical factors. Since these detailed studies provided the basis for the present investigation of froth sprinkling, their key results are highlighted here. For example, for a highly floatable bituminous coal, particle floatability was shown to be directly related to the percentage of coal surface available for bubble attachment and inversely related to particle mass. The data also underscored that in a given size range the addition of mineral matter to a particle makes flotation more difficult both by adding to the mass of the particle and by decreasing the amount of coal surface available for bubble attachment. Size also affects particle floatability in that as the size of particles of a given specific gravity increases, mass increases and the ratio between coal surface area and mass of the particle decreases. Flotation tests showed that any recovery of the coarsest particles in a coal feed is accompanied by progressively higher recovery of finer and finer particles. Consequently, fine high-specific-gravity particles are recovered with the coarse good coal. As a result, when the entire 14 mesh x 0 size range is processed by froth flotation, the good coarse coal is contaminated with high-specific-gravity fines. It is the small quantities of these fines that must be rejected from the froth product if flotation efficiency is to be increased above its present level. These principles and findings, together with work by Professor V. I. Klassen,' led to the froth sprinkling investigation reported in this paper. Working with Russian coals, Klassen had shown that froth sprinkling washes loosely held refuse particles from the froth and compensates for the water lost in the upper froth layers and increases its stability. As a result, the coal particles are retained in the froth and the loss of coarse coal from the froth is prevented. Decreases in ash of 0.1% to 1.5% were reported by Klassen. Working with a 28 mesh x 0 American coal, the author of the present paper found that single-stage flotation coupled with froth sprinkling produced a product comparable to that obtained by the more expensive method of roughing and cleaning.3 The investigation reported in the present paper expanded study of the effect of froth sprinkling to include each of the standard size fractions of a bituminous coal. The main findings are as follows: (1) For those size fractions between 48 mesh and 150 mesh, froth sprinkling produces a marked reduction in both sulfur and ash. In the case of those sizes coarser than 48 mesh, while this reduction is not as significant, the additional benefit of shorter retention time is still a plus for froth sprinkling. Furthermore, when froth sprinkling is coupled with normal fast flotation, the product purity approaches that obtained by starvation reagent feeding, i.e., gradual feeding of flotation reagent to float the recoverable coal from the pulp slowly in several increments. AIR conditioning, or air cooling, for the improvement of ventilation in the Butte mines has come into increasing use during the past 10 years. In part, the methods practiced have been described in previous publications of the Institute, but some improvements on earlier methods have been made and a number of new features have been developed. This paper is presented as a record of progress made, and for the sake of completeness describes all general features of the work. The need for air conditioning in the ventilation of mines in the district arises from the fact that the temperature of the ground and mine water has shown a very great increase with increase in mining depth, and has now reached a maximum of slightly over 130°F. The most difficult part of the ventilation problem is the maintenance of temperature and humidity of a satisfactory standard in the working places, especially on the lower levels. Although ordinary ventilation is adequate to maintain good conditions in most of the working places it is subject to a number of limitations at great depth. Most important among these limitations is that with increase in depth the air becomes heated before it reaches the working places, both by compression from increase in atmospheric pressure and by heat transferred to it from rock at high temperature, so that its capacity for lowering temperatures is greatly reduced before it reaches the operating zone. Increasing depth of mining also increases the distance traveled by the air in its passage through the mine, and this causes a corresponding increase in resistance to air flow, so that there is greater difficulty in maintaining even the same volume in circulation. Thus, in the face of a demand that the ventilating system have a very much greater capacity to remove heat from the mine, the tendency is for that capacity to diminish. The only evident alternatives were (I) the opening of additional air shafts to increase the volume of air in circulation, (2) an extension of the existing system that would be subject to the same limitations, or (3) the adoption of an entirely different method such as air cooling. Fortunately for an economic solution of the problem, the mean annual temperature of the surface atmosphere at Butte is about 40°F., with very low relative humidity in summer, so that there is unlimited natural cooling power at a temperature range adaptable to air-conditioning methods. METHODS Two similar methods of air conditioning are used, as necessitated by service requirements and dependent upon the equipment available. In one, which is the more important and has the greater cooling capacity, water is circulated in a closed circuit, and, alternately, first absorbs heat from warm mine air and then dissipates it in the surface atmosphere by cooling at a cooling tower. DURING a session on coal and coke at the February, 1926, meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the writer called attention to the important work on the X-ray analysis of coal1,2 being carried on in England by C. Norman Kemp and his associates. This aroused so much interest that a paper on the subject was requested for the October meeting. It has seemed advisable to make this paper a preliminary survey of the present status in the application of X-ray methods to coal problems and to follow it from time to time with further articles as the art develops. A survey of this sort naturally divides itself into two parts, radioscopic analysis of the distribution of constituents through the body of the coal, and diffraction analysis of the state of association of the elementary components. In this article the subject matter concerning radioscopic analysis has been drawn almost entirely from the writings of Kemp and his associates and the illustrations have been specially furnished by him. It is a pleasure to record here a great indebtedness for this courtesy and cooperation. The subject matter and illustrations concerning diffraction analysis are taken from the author's unpublished researches.

The demand for crude oil on the Pacific Coast during the year 1945. was so acute that the California crude supply had to be augmented by tank-car imports from the Texas and Rocky Mountain fields. Crude imports reached a high of 64,800 bbl. per day during June, with a total of 14,259,000 bbl. imported during the first 11 .months. The U. S. Navy also implemented the crude output from California pools by drilling and completing approximately 300 wells in the Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1 (Elk Hills), from which an established production of 65,000. bbl. per day was reached in late February and maintained until Aug. 17, 1945, when it was reduced to its preprogram level of 15,000 bbl. per day. Even with the conclusion of the Pacific war on V-J day (Aug. 14), the military petroleum product requirements have permitted little material reduction in output of California crude to prewar rates. During the year, a total of 327-760,000 bbl. of crude was produced, or 19 per cent of the total crude production within the United States during the same period, as compared with 310,996,000 bbl. or 18.4 per cent of the nation's crude production in 1944.
