The state of knowledge bearing on the stability of copper under stress at elevated temperatures is generally known to be in need of revision and extension. The present investigation, dealing with the creep characteristics of a deoxidized copper of low residual phosphorus content, is intended to contribute in some small measure toward this end. The experimental data presented herein have been correlated by methods of evaluation and interpretation familiar to those who are concerned with crecp of metals. In practice it is common, if not requisite, to use structurally stable materials at elevated temperatures. It is frequently desirable, however, to test materials under conditions that produce structural change, in order to determine the extent of such change and its effect on physical properties, thus making it possible to establish accurately the limiting conditions to which such materials may be safely exposed. The creep characteristics of the drawn copper wire of this investigation arc directly associated with its structural instability at elevated temperatures. Complete realization of this fact is essential to the evaluation of its creep resistance under various conditions. Creep results should apply to steady deformation under equilibrium conditions, but these are seldom attained in only one or two thousand hours. It will be shown that steady creep rate for copper at useful stresses does not usually begin until considerably more time has elapsed. A wholly satisfactory substitute or shortcut for extensive creep testing does not appear to be evident in the application of mathematical analyses to limited experimental data. Material A single lot of phosphorized copper wire was drawn down to 0.125-i11. diameter with a final reduction of 84 per cent. After mechanical straightening, a portion of this wire was annealed to an average grain size of 0.013 mm. in a controlled-atmosphere furnace. The composition and initial properties of the copper in these two conditions are listed in Table I. Photomicrographs of the original structure are shown in Fig. I.

THE gamma-alpha transformation in iron and iron-rich alloys is of such practical and theoretical importance that many papers have been published upon the subject relating to critical temperatures, transforma-tion rates and accompanying property changes. Although crystallo-graphic studies are of less immediate practical usefulness, the opportunities which these offer to furnish data, on the basic atomic movements which characterize the transformation are not to be neglected1. The early work on the crystallography of this transformation has been reviewed in the fourth paper of this series2 since then several important papers have appeared. Our present, knowledge may be briefly summarized as follows. Kurdjumow and Sachs, working with a 1.4 per cent carbon steel3, established the orientation relationships subsisting between the face-cen-tered gamma and the metastable tetragonal lattices in freshly quenched martensite, and between the face-centered gamma and the body-Centered alpha lattices in tampered martensite. IMPORTANCE OF ROCK DRILLING. IT has been estimated that the value of the mineral products of the United States is about $2,000,000,000 a year; that about $25,000,000 is expended. annually for explosives and that about double this sum is paid in wages where blasting is done. The value of the mineral products does not adequately express the importance of the industry involved in the excavation of rock and ore because of the enormous sums of money expended in tunnel driving, in quarries, and in open-cut excavation generally. We know that the Catskill Aqueduct in the neighborhood of New York, which is now nearing completion, has cost some $165,000,000 and that about one-third of this may be rated as rock excavation. These illustrations are given in order to call attention to the great importance of an industry the extension and development of which in our industrial life depend so much upon the economics of rock drilling. Reference has been made to the new Catskill Aqueduct. There are three aqueducts leading into New York, each built at periods separated by some 20 years of time. 'The first one, known as the Old Aqueduct, conveys the waters of the Croton river to New York City in a manner which reminds one of the old Roman aqueducts, the ruins of which are still in evidence. The engineers who laid out these old conduits sought to direct their lines around the hills and into the valleys, at all times avoiding the rock. When it was necessary to cross a river or a deep ravine, a bridge or causeway was constructed. High Bridge, over the Harlem river, is an arched masonry viaduct differing in no essential features from the aqueducts of the Romans. When the second Croton Aqueduct was built, about the year 1890, the art of drilling rock had been so far perfected, and the use of explosives, through the invention of dynamite, had become ,so general, that this waterway was planned and executed on straight lines, following rather than avoiding the rock. Mineral raw materials, because they are essential to our industrial prosperity and military strength, must be made available in substantial quantities. regardless of cost. Variations in the cost of procuring minerals, as compared with the cost of obtaining other commodities, and changes in the cost of production of different minerals relative to one another, will naturally influence the quantities of a given mineral item that can be marketed readily. However, in the last analysis, the cost of winning minerals from the ground usually constitutes only a small fraction of the value of the end-use products and services derived from them. The miner's share of the cost of a typewriter, telephone circuit, or even a modem office building, is almost insignificant. Far more important to the ultimate consumer, therefore, than any minor saving in cost is the assurance of ample supplies of the minerals needed to aliment our expanding economy. To create a successful metal mining operation involves ( 1 ) the discovery and systematic development of a mineral deposit, (2) extraction of the ore, (3) the mechanical and metallurgical processing to eliminate worth- less or harmful impurities, and (4) the profitable disposal of the product. The first step of the technological process belongs chiefly in the realm of the geologist, the second is a mining engineer's job, the third is mainly up to the millmen and extractive metallurgists; whereas the fourth and equally important step poses a commercial problem that has aspects in common with the marketing of other products. Ore finding is far from being an exact science. There is no mathematical criterion for evaluating the efficiency of prospecting and exploration. Lady Luck shares the honors or assumes part of the blame along with the prospector and geologist. Marketing like- wise involves factors that seemingly defy engineering analysis. The problem of unsteady-state condensate-gas flow through porous media leads to a set of second-order non-linear partial differential equations. Such a set of equations is numerically solved in the case of radial two-phase flow around a well, taking into consideration both the thermodynamical properties of the fluid and the mechanical properties of the reservoir. The fluid properties, reflecting the PVT relationship of the gaseous and liquid phases, are expressed by using the partial specific masses of the two main separator products in these phases. The flow properties of the reservoir rock are expressed by the generalized Darcy's law for the liquid phase and by a quadratic relationship between the rate of flow and the pressure gradient for the gaseous phase. The numerical solution of the equations for pressure and saturation US radius and time is worked out through programs written for a computer. The evolution of bottom-hole pressures, well productivities or- deliverabilities and effluent compositions with the depletion of the reservoir is easily derived. The application to the Saharian gas-condensate field Hassi R'Mel led to a better understanding of the drainage mechanism. A zone of fairly high liquid saturation develops around the wells, reducing the effective permeability, and represents a loss of condensible products in addition to the PVT-like retrograde condensation. lnside this zone, near the well, the deviation from Darcy's law for the flow of the gaseous phase governs the well deliver-ability. A back-pressure test has been computed and correlates with the field results. INTRODUCTION Two-phase flow of volatile hydrocarbons, like condensate gas or light crude oil, may be treated as the flow of a binary mixture by an arbitrary division of the chemical components into two groups. This is translated into two equations of mass continuity, which constitute a set of relation- ships for the pressure and the saturations vs the space coordinates and the time. The equations contain the laws governing the composition and the motion of the phases. The problem so defined is solved with the assumption that the compositions of the phases at any pressure are respectively the same as those observed in a PVT measuring cell under differential liberation. In a first series of computations, it was assumed that the flow obeys the generalized Darcy's law. A satisfactory representation of the retrograde condensation around the well was thus obtained. In addition, the trend toward decreasing effective permeabilities was obtained, and the computed composition of the effluent checked the laboratory values. However, it has not been possible within this basic assumption to represent the non-linear relationship between the production rate and the bottom-hole pressure drawdown as observed for gas wells in the field. Following the advice of A. Houpeurt it was decided to consider the relative permeability to gas as a function of the velocity of the gas Phase.1 The necessary physical determinations were made by E. COstaséque using a method devised by A. Houpeurt and R. Iffly. As numerical processing of the equations progressed, several difficulties were encountered which were overcome through collaboration with the computer manufacturer. This mathematical model of two-phase flow in porous media had been primarily intended for and extensively applied to the case of the Hassi R'Mel gas-condensate field, operated by SN Repal for SEHR, a joint subsidiary of SN Repal and CFP (A). The programs have also found their applications to forecast the behavior of several fields in the Sahara area containing light and volatile hydrocarbons. BASIC EQUATIONS We will consider a zone in the porous reservoir where the flow properties and the in situ composition of the fluids can be assumed to be uniform. General expressions are given to describe macro-segregation in castings and ingots which results from mass flow of solute-rich liquid to feed solidification and thermal contractions. Analytical solutions are given for solidification with planar isotherms (unidirectional and bidirectional heat flow). These solutions describe inverse segregation and centerline segregation. Numerical examples are given for A1-4.5 pct Cu alloy. In 1540, Vannoccio Biringuccio published one of the first references to macrosegregation, describing the problem of exudation and inverse segregation in the manufacture of bronze gun barrels.' Since then, a great many studies of macrosegregation have been reported. Recent work of particular engineering interest includes that of Marburg 2 and others:" on centerline segregation and other types of segregation in large steel ingots, and work of Adams,5 Scheil, 6 and Kirkaldy and youdelis7 on inverse segregation in nonferrous ingots. In most studies on this subject, the various types of macrosegregation have been treated as separate phenomena. For example, quite different mechanisms have been proposed for formation of centerline segregation, negative cone of segregation, inverse segregation, banding, and so forth. In this, and in several papers to follow, it is proposed that these as well as other types of macrosegregation result from the same basic mechanism and can be quantitatively described by the same basic equation. It has often been suggested that some types of segregation (such as centerline segregation and banding) occur as a result of buildup of solute at the tips of growing dendrites.2-4 ,8-10 As example, banding can be induced in centrifugal castings by mechanical vibration, and Northcott 10 suggests this might be due to the influence of the vibration on the boundary layer at the dendrite tips of the growing dendrites. However, in view of the extremely small boundary layer known to exist at the tips of the dendrites,11,12 any interpretation of macrosegregation based on this boundary layer is clearly incorrect. Note that experiment has shown that significant buildup of solute does not occur at dendrite tips in ingot solidification, but even if such buildup occurred the thickness of the enriched zone would only be the order of D/U where D is liquid diffusion coefficient and U is dendrite tip velocity. For usual casting or ingot solidification this solute-enriched layer is 10"3 cm, far too small to account, for example, for centerline segregation.11'12 It has also been suggested that convection in the bulk liquid (ahead of the advancing dendrites) might cause segregation by sweeping away the solute-rich boundary layer in front of the dendrites.3 However, since there is no significant boundary layer, this explanation must be incorrect. The convection might directly cause segregation by penetrating between the dendrite arms, and presumably in a rimming steel ingot it is sufficiently vigorous to cause some segregation in this way. Centerline segregation, however, cannot be interpreted as resulting from this convection since a sharply segregated zone is usually found near the centerline, with the bulk of the ingot being nearly of nominal composition. If convection in the bulk liquid were the direct cause, a gradual change in ingot composition over the entire cross section would be expected. It is known that sudden changes in convection of the bulk liquid during solidification can result in banding,14 but it is not clear that the banding results directly from the effect of convection on solute distribution. Changes in convection also affect thermal conditions in the liquid-solid region of a solidifying ingot. It will be seen later in this paper, and in a paper to follow, that macrosegregation is strongly influenced by these thermal changes. Recognizing that in some cases of ingot solidification (as in solidification of rimming steels) convection in the bulk liquid may have a direct effect on solute distribution, we neglect it in this paper and in the several to follow. At the present time, oxidized taconite and semitaconite are not processed on the Mesabi Range except in vely limited tonnages. However, it is estimated that by 1990 shipments from the Range will approach 75 million tons of iron ore per year. To achieve this and future production, either additional magnetic taconite reserves must be proven or oxidized taconite and semitaconite must be processed. One beneficiation process which uses high-intensity magnetic separation and flotation for concentrating oxidized taconite and semitaconite is described. Detailed metallurgical results are given and an economic evaluation of the process is presented with comparison to other processes. The results of the present study indicate that the high-intensity magnetic separation and flotation process appears nearer commercialization for the processing of Mesabi Range semitaconite. The disadvantages of the process are nearer solution and are being solved by well-defined programs. During the twentieth century, the Mesabi Range in northeastern Minnesota has been the main source of iron ore for American steel mills. The Mesabi Range, which is about 120 miles long and up to 3 miles wide, is the pre-glacial outcrop of a group of sedimentary iron-bearing rocks known as the Biwabik formation. The formation, which is 200 to 650 ft thick and dips 50 to 10° to the southeast, is divided into four stratigraphic units. From top to bottom, these are the Upper Slaty, Upper Cherty, Lower Slaty, and Lower Cherty. Since its deposition in Precambrian time, most of the original Biwabik formation has been subject to alteration. Thus, although the iron content of the original formation was quite uniform, major variations in mineral composition now occur both laterally along the length of the formation and vertically within its units. Details of the mineralogical variations in the Biwabik formation have been described by Wolff,' Gruner, 2 and White.3 The unaltered portion of the Biwabik formation includes the magnetite taconites which are being commercially processed by Reserve Mining, Erie Mining, Eveleth Taconite, National Steel, Butler Taconite, and U.S. Steel. These six operations have a capacity of 32 million tons of iron ore pellets per year and have produced approximately 170milion tons of pellets since 1956. Capacity for another 30 million tons of pellets per year is being considered by the industry for the next ten years. This increase will be obtained by constructing new plants and by expanding present operations. Thus, by ! 978, it is estimated that approximately 60 million tons of iron ore vellets will be produced each vear from the magnetite taconites of the Biwabik formation. The portions of the Biwabik formation subjected to intense alteration resulted in direct shipping, wash, and heavy-media ores. Since 1892, 1.8 billion tons of direct shipping ore have been shipped from the Mesabi Range. This ore has been the major source of iron ore for American steel mills. In 1967, about 11 million tons of direct shipping ore and 13 million tons of wash, jig, heavy-media, and other gravity concentrates were shipped from the Mesabi Range.4 These products generally have poorer physical and chemical properties than the iron pellets produced from magnetic taconite. It is predicted that the shipment of these materials will decrease from 24 million tons in 1967 to 6 to 8 million tons in 1975.' This decrease will

Geochemistry in all its branches is playing G an increasingly important part in the business of mine finding. Although geochemical studies were commenced more than 50 years ago, interest in this subject did not become widespread until the late 1930's when in Scandinavia and the U.S.S.R. a whole series of investigations were initiated. Unfortunately for those in North America, the results of these investigations have only recently become available. In Canada and the U.S. geochemistry as a serious mine finding tool dates back only to the period following World War II. This article deals primarily with soils, which have found widespread acceptance as a useful tool in geochemical prospecting. Actually soils vary greatly in texture, structure, profile, and mineral background. Soil sampling poses no hardship for normal intellects, but it does assume an elementary knowledge of soil science and of the chemical problems involved in determining the absolute and relative amounts of a particular element in any particular soil.

The prime objective of geophysical exploration is to promote the economical and rapid dis-covery of mineral or oil deposits of commercial value. To a few this concept as applied in min-ing may signify the direct discovery of ore-bodies, but to the geophysical engineer this latter Idea is one of the most insidious and detrimental misapprehensions which he has to combat. The destruction of this annoying obstacle to the progress of geophysical exploration reveals the kernel of truth behind it, that the exploration geophysicist has for the better part of two decades been concerned primarily with the discovery of mineral formations favorable to the occur-rence of commercial ore. There is a very real distinction here, since geophysical methods are capable of discovering certain mineral formations such as sulphide bodies or quartz veins, but are totally incompetent to predict whether or not they constitute ore; that is. whether or not they contain minerals of economic value in the amounts requisite to repay extraction. The art of geophysical exploration is now, however, rapidly outgrowing these early limita-tions. The rate of this growth will in large measure depend on the recognition by the mining industry of the fact that geophysics can play a role far wider and more important than it usual-ly does now, in guiding the future exploration and development of mineral deposits. It is my own firm conviction that as time marches on we will see the methods of applied geophysics turned more and more to the delineation of both minor and major structural features. The outlining of such features having a bearing on the probable loci of mineral deposition will be of inestimable value in guiding the development of a mining district. THE Widmanstätten figures found in the steels have been long recog-nized and in some aspects carefully studied,1 especially as they occur in cast hypoeutectoid alloys. Aside.from the practical importance of the structures obtained in the steels by various heat treatments, a study of the characteristics of these figures is interesting because of the rich opportunity the system affords, to, obtain new data on the mechanism of segregation from solid solutions. This opportunity is twofold: first, by changing composition within the austenite range the proeutectoid precipitate may be changed from that of ferrite to that of cementite, thus offering the same opportunity for changing the type of precipitate while maintaining the same basic lattice as that afforded by the Cu-Zn alloys;2 and second, the eutectoid inversion leads upon drastic quenching to the formation of martensite, a Widman-stätten figure of unique interest from ;the crystallographic viewpoint, particularly in comparison with those formed on-slow cooling.3 We have, therefore, two types of structure to study: that formed on slow cooling of hypoeutectoid and hypereutectoid alloys, and that formed on quenching hypoeutectoid, eutectoid, and hypereutectoid alloys. For each of these types of structure we require the crystallographic plane in the mother austenite along which the precipitate forms (we shall see that the precipitates in these alloys are invariably platelike in form), and also the orientation of the precipitate upon this plane. Mining as an industry of Utah had its inception in the activities of United States soldiers who came to the Salt Lake valley under the command of Gen. P. E. Connor, founder of Fort Douglas, in October, 1862. Many of these soldiers were from California and naturally employed their spare time in the search for minerals. Although their military status did not permit them to make locations in their own names, they assiduously prospected the region in accordance with their own knowledge and with in- formation conveyed to them by Indians and others. Their efforts were encouraged by their commander, who thereby fairly earned the title of father of the industry here, and by their other officers, and many discoveries that subsequently proved of great value were made by the soldiers. No systematic prospecting or mining had been done in the Territory previously although early Mormon settlers in the southern portion had mined a little ore from time to time in order to provide supplies of lead for bullets. The Mormon leaders at that time did not encourage mining. They held that agriculture was more important and profitable for their followers.

The copper industry in the Province of Katanga, in the Belgian Congo, which is now controlled and operated by the Union Minére du Haut Katanga, had its inception many years ago in the vision of a Scotsman, Robert Williams, now Sir Robert Williams, Baronet. He it was who personally negotiated the mineral concession with King Leopold of Belgium, sent in the prospecting parties who located most of the present mines of the company, later arranged for the Belgian participation from which the present company was formed, and has been its active mentor ever since. The idea back of his efforts was the establishment of an industry on the Congo-Zambezi divide, of sufficient importance to draw up to it the head of the Cape to Cairo Railroad, the dream of Sir Cecil Rhodes, and the consummation of which he had left as a legacy to Mr. Williams, his successor. The reports of the prospecting expeditions showed that copper in profitable quantity was there, but many difficulties lay in the way of the establishment of the infant industry. The isolated location of the mines, various tribal wars, the Boer War, and many other factors contributed to making progress very slow. However, in spite of these difficulties the railroad was finally built and a blast-furnace plant erected at Lubumbashi, near Elisabethville, the capital of the Province. Operations of this plant were started in 1911, treating high-grade oxidized ores and producing pig copper by a reducing smelting. Production has been continuous since that time and the company has grown so that at present it ranks as the largest individual copper producer in the industry. It is a fitting monument to the foresight, optimism and driving force of its founder, and the progressive policies of his Belgian colleagues. In January, 1914, the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga engaged as its consulting engineer, Archer E. Wheeler, metallurgical engineer, at that time general superintendent of the Great Falls plant of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Mr. Wheeler was commissioned by the Board of Directors to proceed into Katanga, and make all necessary investigations to enable him to report on a comprehensive development program, and to recommend a scheme of treatment particularly for their low grade

THE object of all classification is to group together things which are alike, and separate those which are unlike. This object is essentially a practical one, enabling us to apply past experience to new conditions: Many costly large-scale experiments lose half their importance for want of proper description of the coal used, and the consequent impossibility of predicting other coals will behave in the same way. I do not, therefore, make a fundamental distinction between "scientific" and "use" classifications, except in so far as use depends on conditions, such as size or impurities which are not related to the nature of the coal substance itself. The characters chosen to define the classes of coal must be such as are accompanied by as many other properties as possible. It is not to be expected that any system of classification will enable us to predict every property of coal, since all specimens have an individuality of their own. But specimens can be grouped by a number of resemblances into species. Further, species which resemble each other can be grouped into genera.

This paper describes the tempetrature, solute (gold), and orientalion dependence of the plastic rleforlirnlion of silver single crystals. The virgin flow stress, To, and its temperatutre dependence incrense with increase in solute concentration. el decreases with decrease in temperature below room teiirperature and with increase in solute coucentralion. The dependence of 011 on temperature arid solute sontenl is due to the dependence of Ts on the two variables. An increase in ts, due to either the temperature or the solute conlent, results in a decrease of e11 in crystals of single-slip orientation and an increase of 011 in crystals of' (100) find (111) orientation. is orientation-dependent and at all the temperatures and in all the materials studied. The Leveling off of the engineering stress-strain curve in crystals of (100) 07-ientotion at a stress tl, is associated with extensive cross slib. The temperature and strain -rate dependence of tl are similar to those of indicating that a rate process is the cause 01 this phenomenon. The plastic deformation of silrer crystals of (110) orientation is multiple to that of crystals of single-slip orientation. THE work hardening of fcc crystals has been the subject of intensive investigations in the past 15 years. The effect of orientation, deformation temperature, solutes, second phase or precipitates, strain rate, etc., has been studied in a number of fcc metals.'-5 In spite of the considerable amount of work reported on the dependence of work hardening on the orientation, temperature, and solute concentration, certain aspects of the plastic deformation of fcc crystals have not been clarified. For instance, with the exception of a few investigations,6-8 where crystals of multiple-slip orientations have been studied, almost all the studies have been on crystals of single-slip orientations. Hence, a major portion of this study has been devoted to the dependence of plastic deformation on the multiplicity of slip systems and the enhanced possibility of dislocation interactions resulting from such multiplicity. Further, the abnormally low rate of work hardening observed at large strains at certain temperatures in crystals of the (100) orienta-tion 6-8has not been explained satisfactorily. It is the aim of this study to clarify this aspect of the orientation and temperature dependence of the plastic deformation of fcc single crystals. The work-hardening characteristics of single crystals of aluminum of ( 110) orientation have been studied at room temperatur "'12 and above." They have not been studied at temperatures where the virgin flow stress is dependent on temperature or where, in Seeger's terminology is important. The work hardening of single crystals of (110) orientation is of interest for another reason. As shown in Table I, the dislocation reactions that are possible in the (110) orientation are similar in certain respects to those that are possible in the (100) orientation. Hence, the deformation of single crystals of silver of (110) orientation was studied in the temperature range 100° to 900°K at intervals of 200°K. The effect of solute concentration on the plastic deformation of fcc single crystals of single-slip orientation has been studied by several investiaators.> In all of these investigations—with the exception of Ref. 20—single crystals of identical orientation have not been used, with the result that the orientation dependence of plastic deformation is superimposed on the effect of the solute. The method of treating hazards wherein value is decreased, is cited by R. D. Parks. Quite properly, the theory of probabilities is made use of when multiple hazards are under consideration. E. F. Fitzhugh, Jr. deals with the enhancement phase graphically and uses percentage of expectancy as derived by a study of conditions and the selection of a chance factor. It is believed that both of the authors referred to fully recognize the part which human judgment plays, and as coupled with experience, training, and the application of the theory of probabilities; in that respect the composer of this paper is in accord. Within the past year, the task of arriving at a mathematical method for handling the enhancement phase, and, additionally, coupling the negative and positive phases, was explored. MICROCRACKS are often introduced into commercial metals during fabrication processes such as swaging, cold rolling, deep drawing, and welding. These microcracks act as strain concentrators and may be capable of causing premature catastrophic failure of a component or weld. The present investigation was undertaken to determine whether high-temperature annealing treatments may be capable of reducing or negating the detrimental effects of such existing microcracks. Internal microcracks, ranging from 0.1 to 0.85 mm in length and averaging 0.23 mm, were introduced into polycrystalline Fe-3 pct Si tensile specimens (0.155 mm grain size) by the cathodic charging of hydrogen.1'2 The typical appearance of such microcracks and their associated strain patterns (made visible by the technique of dislocation etch pitting3) is shown in Fig. 1. The stress fields of the dislocation loops formed during plastic relaxation stabilize the microcracks so that, when the internal hydrogen pressure is removed: the microcracks stay open, rather than disappear as perfectly elastic cracks would be expected to do.' As shown in Fig. 2, such stopped microcracks cause a 36 pct decrease in the macroscopic cleavage fracture strength at -196°C.

A few useful data and statistics are furnished, yet not complete statistics that are available elsewhere. Geology has been treated in simple terms because the reader is presumed to have little interest in the names of formations and of oil sands. Mineral deposits are more or less analogous. Approximate figures for petroleum production in Argentina for 1929 show an increase of only about 300,000 bbl. over production for 1928. This increase is due to greater yield in the Plaza Huincul and in the Salta regions. Table 1 shows the distribution of production in the various fields of the whole country, using estimates for the later months of the year. The outlook for production remains about the same as in 1928. It is believed that in northern Argentina there are regions that contain oil, but they are yet unexplored. Notable traces of oil at depths between 1280 and 1390 m. have appeared in a 1500-m. boring in Comodoro Rivadavia, but their importance is unknown.
