The velocity of mig-ration of these solutes in thorium metal due to a high amperage dc current was measured at several temperatures. All three solutes migrated in the same direction as the electron flow. Diffusion coefficients were combined with the migration velocities to predict the steady-state concentration profile. Electrotransport was shown to be an effective method of removing carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen from thorium and resistance ratios several times larger than for crystal bar thorium were achieved. However, the maxirnum attained purification was well below the predicted values, apparently due to some form of contamination. THE migration of solutes in metals when a high current density dc current is passed has been known for many years. This phenomenon has been the subject of a number of reviews published in recent years.l~* Many of the earlier investigators of electromigration of interstitial solutes interpreted the direction and velocity of migration on the basis of a charge on the solute particle. This interpretation is unclear because, in a given experiment, one cannot separate the contributions to the force moving the solute which arise from the charge on the solute in an electric field gradient and the momentum transfer from the scattering of the electrons or holes. There have been only a few quantitative measurements of interstitial migration velocities and some of these have been characterized by poor accuracy or by errors in the analysis of the experiment. The electrotransport mobilities of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen in thorium were determined by observing the rate of movement of a discontinuity in the concentration profile. This method was used by Carlson el a~.~ to determine the mobilities of interstitial solutes in yttrium and its advantages are discussed in that paper. The specimen is essentially a pair of semi-infinite, bar-type diffusion couples. The electro-transport velocity was measured by observing the displacement of the mean concentration point in a measured length of time. The diffusion coefficients were calculated by the Grube method from the concentration profile. The transport mobilities and diffusion coefficients can be used to predict the concentration profile in an electrotransport experiment of a given time, current density, and specimen length. At long times a steady state will be reached such that the natural logarithm of the concentration of each solute varies linearly along the bar with a slope which is equal to the velocity of the migrating solute divided by its diffusion coefficient. The estimation of the purification potential of electrotransport is discussed by ~erhoeven.' A comparison of the concentration profile and the purification which should be expected from known solute velocities and diffusion coefficients with that which is obtained in an experiment can be very useful in indicating whether the maximum possible purification has been achieved. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The apparatus used in this study consisted of a sample chamber which was equipped with two electrodes, a sight glass, and a flange for mounting to a high-vacuum system capable of obtaining pressure of 2 x lo-? Torr. The chamber was made of stainless steel and was 4 in. in diam and 6 in. long. The seal between the electrodes and the chamber was made with "0" rings and compression bushings. The thorium specimens were threaded and screwed into tantalum "U"-shaped adapters attached to the ends of the electrodes. This arrangement is shown in Fig. 1

HE task of measuring the specific gravity of the -*- operating medium in a heavy-media separation system has never presented a particularly difficult problem because the medium is fairly stable and the overflow of the separatory vessel, as well as its underflow, can be sampled easily and accurately and the specific gravity of the suspension determined easily by weighing a known volume. However, while this method is simple and accurate it does require the operator to take the sample by hand and to weigh it and there is considerable temptation to avoid the periodic sampling if everything seems to be going well, or if something is occupying the attention of the operator. Furthermore all operators do not sample in exactly the same manner and considerable practice is required for two operators to be able to "check" each other to the last few hundredths, particularly if the sample is cut underneath the drainage screen where location of the point of sampling and load on the screens tends to influence the determination. While none of the above presents much of a problem, we have all recognized that some mechanical method of continuous measurement and recording would be advantageous since the operator would merely have to glance at the meter to check the gravity and to have an indication of the trend of any changes. Also if the instrument were of the recording type, a permanent record would be available for the guidance of the superintendent. The Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. was the first heavy-media user to actually install such a recording meter. In 1946 they installed in their Central Mill at Cardin, Okla., a specific gravity recorder manufactured by the Bristol Co. of Water-bury, Conn. R. A. Barnes, of the Bristol Co., working with E. H. Crabtree, Jr. and Elmer Isern, of Eagle-Picher, made the application and worked out the problems of sampling and measuring. Their attempts to measure the specific gravity of the medium in the cone itself were not entirely successful and they resorted to an outside sample tube for actually making the determination. Because of the particular flowsheet used, it was possible to tap off from the medium return pipeline a stream of medium and divert it into the sampling tube, which was provided with a constant level overflow and a spigot underflow, and into which the bubbler tubes dipped. The Eagle-Picher installation was successful and its possibilities were recognized by the Mineral Dressing Laboratory of the American Cyanamid Co. It was decided to install a similar unit in the heavy-media pilot plant to investigate further its possibilities. Chief among these was the continuous record which it was felt would be proof of the steadiness of the gravity in a heavy-media cone, something which is not always appreciated by POtential users. Because the heavy-media pilot plant is required to operate at a wide range of specific gravities, it was realized that the unit would have to record all gravities from 1.25 to 3.50, and do it to the nearest 0.01. It would not be necessary to record all of this wide range on a single chart and the method selected was to have 4 bands, each band range overlapping the other a small amount and calibrated so that with standard charts one division would represent 0.01 sp gr. A shift from one band to another could be arranged without alteration of the instrument itself, being accomplished by a simple change in the bubble-tube lengths, as described later. Accordingly, a recording type instrument was purchased and installed. Because there were some advantages in doing so, the first installation attempted to measure the gravity of the cone proper by placing the bubble tubes in the cone. This was not at all satisfactory and the second scheme utilized a fixed vertical screen at the surface of the cone, and an external sample-tube arrangement. We were particularly anxious to make this work as we felt it would be advantageous to measure the top level of medium where the separation was actually being made, but we were doomed to disappointment because it was impossible to keep the screen clean of float. not weaken. I saw him shortly before he was killed; his conduct under fire was splendid and an inspiration to his men. His loss is felt deeply by all ranks. Thanks to him and to others, who like him, paid the full measure of devotion to their country, our line was held until the critical situation in that vicinity was at an end. He died the true death of a soldier, with his face to the enemy. As we now look back, it is easy to believe that this holding of the line of defense intact by General Carey and his men was a determining factor in the outcome of the war. To have played so important and noble a part in this vital effort as that taken by Perry is assuredly the privilege of few. Our lives, it seems, are like capital entrusted to us to be expended as wisely and effectively as we may. With them we purchase whatever of accomplishment the stuff that is in us permits. It is impossible to escape profound regret that a career so full of the highest promise, and a personality so overflowing with all that is fine and lovable, should have been cut short at the age of thirty-one. Yet who can doubt that in a few months Perry bought with his life the fullest achievement of a life-time—a glorious part in the salvation of Liberty and Justice and Decency, indeed of Civilization itself! In a recent review of the field of plastic deforrnation of metal single crystals, Maddin and chenl indicated the need for systematic investigations of the crystallography of the slip process with special attention to: a) The effect of the orientation of a crystal on the appearance of slip lines, b) The effect of high temperatures on the slip systems of aluminum, c) The effect of strain rate on the crystallography of slip. The present paper deals with the effect of temperature and strain rate on the mechanism of deformation of aluminum single crystals similarly oriented for single and duplex slip. The work of several investigators has shown that in aluminum at high temperatures other slip systems in addition to the predicted {I l l) <101> may operate. Self-diffusion has been measured along each principal axis of mosaic-structured and relatively perfect a uvaniuln single crystals. The anisotropy reported before,&apos; D[loo] = D[001] » D[010 , has been confirmed. and is shown to represent volume diffusion. Diffusion along the dislocations in the imperfect crystals increases the measured value of D significantly without changingr either the shapes of the penetvation plots or the anisotropy. SINCE a uranium is orthorhombic, the diffusion coefficients along the principal crystallographic axes need not be equal. A previous measurement of self-diffusion in three mosaic-structured a uranium single crystals1 showed that Dil00| =D[001 >>D[010 This result was deduced from penetration plots similar to those in Fig. 1. That is, the plots for diffusion along [loo] and [001] were the straight lines expected from the solution of the diffusion equation for the boundary and initial conditions of the experiment, while the plot for diffusion along [010] was curved so that the part near X = 0 had a much steeper slope than the straight lines did. The observed anisotropy could have been due either to volume diffusion or to diffusion along the very large number of dislocations in such crystals, according to the model proposed by aart.&apos; The authors of Ref. 1 argued that the latter possibility was unlikely, but did not exclude it. To settle the question, a simultaneous measurement of self-diffusion in mosaic-structured and mosaic-free crystals was carried out. This paper reports the results, as well as a measurement of the temperature dependence of self-diffusion in a uranium. EXPERIMENTAL The single crystals of a uranium used in this experiment are listed in Table I, together with other experimental details. &apos;(Mosaic structured" here means crystals grown by solid-state phase change.3 The Laue spots from such crystals spread over about 6 deg of arc, which indicates that the density of dislocations is very large. "Perfect" crystals are ones grown by Fisher&apos;s grain-coarsening tehnique; the Laue spots from these are quite sharp,4 which shows that the dislocation density in these crystals is much lower. All of the crystals were made from high-purity uranium; a typical analysis is given in Ref. 1. The actual diffusion directions were within a few degrees of the nominal. The thin layer-sectioning method was used. The experimental techniques were similar to those described in Ref. 1, except the sectioning. Crystals Za, 2b, 2c, 4a, 4b, and 4c were sectioned on a lathe. Crystals 3a, 3b, and 3c were sectioned by grinding on glass plates, with 1 p diamond powder in butyl alcohol as the abrasive. The use of glass plates eliminated the crowning noted in Ref. 1, and the use of butyl alcohol as a lubricant simplified the chemical processing of the sections. Material from the sides of these three crystals was removed by spark machining before sectioning. The sectioning of crystals 4a and 4c was botched. A small cylinder of metal was extruded from the center of crystal 4a while turning off material from the side of the sample. Crystal 4c was misaligned by 2.1 x 10"3 cm because the dial gage jammed during the alignment. Notwithstanding these errors, useful data were still obtained from these crystals. The points

The Central Michigan area held first place in the state during the year. Midland and Isabella, the leading counties in 1932, produced most of the oil in 1933. The Porter field southeast of Mt. Pleasant and along the same structural trend saw the greatest drilling activity. In Porter during the year 117 new wells were drilled. Under proration these wells produced 3,583,617 bbl., or nearly one-half the total for the state, which has been estimated at 7,947,695 bbl. The Porter field is already outlined on all sides except the northwest. It probably reached its peak in 1933. Unless a new field of some magnitude is developed in 1934, Michigan will see a continuous decline. The Greendale extension to the old Mt. Pleasant field furnished the new flush for 1932. In 1933

The fifth convention of the National Foreign Trade Council was held in Cincinnati, Apr. 18, 19 and 20. More than one thousand accepted delegates were registered, the American Institute of Mining Engineers being represented by W. L. Saunders and W. N. Thayer. The convention was called to order Thursday morning, Apr. 18, in the convention hall of the Hotel Gibson; by the Chairman, Mr. James .A. Farrel, president of the U. S. Steel Corporation, and was in continuous session for two clays, several group sessions being held simultaneously. The convention adjourned Saturday morning after receiving the report of the central committee. The dominant themes of the convention were: First, "Win the War" and second, "Establish Foreign Trade on a. Firmer Basis." The discussions included textiles, lumber, chemicals, automobiles, finance, and agriculture, and also those things in which mining engineers are particularly interested, metals, oil, and coal. The report of the central committee, which was adopted, recommended the stimulation&apos; of production of all materials required for war purposes; the subordination of all trade that will not impose new and heavy penalties on our adversaries; the maintenance of such foreign trade as will support national credit and supply materials required for military and naval purposes; the continued interchange so far as possible of merchandise and products between the United States and. Latin-America, Asia and Oceania; the immediate increase of tonnage in the north Atlantic; the cheerful and whole-hearted cooperation of importers

THE application of electric power for driving, mine hoists handling heavy loads at high speeds has recently been extended by the installation of what is probably the largest electrically driven hoist in this country at the Granite Mountain shaft of the North Butte Mining Co., Butte, Mont. While the weight of rock which is hoisted by this machine is not the largest now being handled by electric mine hoists, the speed of hoisting is so, and the combination of the high speed with the heavy load has resulted in a machine of considerable interest to all those actively engaged in mining. Aside from mere consideration of size, this installation deserves attention because of the careful attention given, not only to the question of economy of operation, but to the details of construction and installation of the entire equipment. The conditions to be met in this installation were as follows: Weight of rock to be raised per trip, 7 gross tons 15,680 1b. Weight of skip 8,0001b. Weight of cage 1,8001b. Maximum depth of hoisting 4,000 ft. Diameter of rope 153 in. Total weight suspended on one rope from drum 42,000 1b. Normal hoisting speed 2,700 ft. per minute. Maximum hoisting speed : 3,000 ft. per minute. Desired capacity-200 tons per hour from 4,000 ft: depth. The ore is mined in several levels and hoisting is carried on from the 800-ft. level down to the 2,700-ft., which is at present the maximum depth from which the ore is raised regularly. Development is proceeding and a depth of 2,900 ft. has already been reached. The rock is handled underground in cars holding ¾ ton, and about 10 cars are the usual load for a skip. All of the ore is clumped into underground bins, which are of different capacities varying up to 250 tons. From the bins the ore is fed into the skips without passing into measuring pockets. The term potash refers to potassium oxide (K2O), a compound not found in nature or produced by man but used as a basis for comparison of all potassium compounds and now is applied generally to various compounds of potassium used by agriculture and industry. Potassium, the last of the three major plant foods to be used in appreciable quantities by agriculture, was originally produced only from organic materials for chemical uses. The first recorded identification of a mineral source of potassium was in 1797; but, until the discovery in 1839 of the large deposits of soluble potassium salts in Germany and their development in 1860-61, nearly all potassium compounds continued to come from organic sources. With the importance of potash to plant life discovered in 1840 by von Liebig and the production of potash in Germany after 1861, agriculture soon became the major consumer of potash. In 1958 agriculture accounted for about 95 pct of the total potash consumption; the chemical industry used the remaining 5 pct. Mineralogy and Geology Potassium, an important constituent of the earth&apos;s crust, occurs in many forms in numerous rocks and minerals, including water solutions, but is not found in its native state. Twenty-five of the more important potash minerals are listed in Table 1. The properties of the five potash minerals most common in Permian salt formations follow: Sylvite is isometric; has a hardness of 2, a specific gravity of 1.98, vitreous luster, and cubic cleavage; and ranges in color from clear to brick red. In taste it is similar to halite but has a sharper taste and a cooling effect on the tongue. It is very plastic under pressure. Langbeinite is isometric; has a hardness of 4, a specific gravity of 2.82, vitreous luster, conchoidal fracture, and no cleavage; and ranges in color from clear to gray. It is taste- [ ] less, somewhat granular, and slowly soluble in water. Polyhalite is triclinic; has a hardness of 3, a specific gravity of 2.77, and dull luster; and

ALTHOUGH many structural and kinetic investigations have been made for alloys of iron and nickel, only meager data exist from thermodynamic investigations. The purpose of this note is to estimate the free energy of the Fe-Ni solid solutions from thermodynamic data available for ternary alloys containing iron and nickel. The lack of a description of the thermodynamic behavior for the Fe-Ni system has required the structural and kinetic analyses of the system to assume some form of solution behavior, usually regular, e.g., the mar-tensite transformation analysis of Kaufman and Cohen, 1 consistent with the limited thermodynamic data. Indications that this system could exhibit ideal solution departures might have been suggested by the large deviations from additivity rules observed in the density and lattice-parameter measurements of Jette and Foote2 who interpreted this in terms of possible solute-solvent interactions. Later Turkdogan et al. 3 and more recently Ward and wright 4 found a minimum in the graphite solubility in liquid Fe-Ni solutions near the concentration of FeNi3 with deviations from linearity persisting at all concentrations. This was interpreted by Ward and wright4 to indicate negative heats of solution and was suggestive of short-range ordering. The infinitely dilute activity coefficient of carbon (?oC) was also observed by smith5 to pass through a maximum near the FeNi3 concentration in Fe-Ni solid solutions. Recent investigations of the liquid solutions over the entire concentration range by Zellars et a1.&apos; and Speiser et a1.," using vapor-pressure determinations, revealed both negative departures from Raoult&apos;s law and a nonregular solution behavior. The solid alloys have been studied by Oriani 8 and Kubaschew-ski and von Goldbeck6 employing gaseous H2/H2O equilibria with Fe and FeO. Both investigations were in substantial agreement, indicating very small departures from ideality. However, Oriani observed the formation of Fe3O4 (instead of FeO) at XFe= 0.441 which severed the equilibrium and precluded experimental investigation of the nickel-rich alloys. Heat-capacity and heat-content measurements have been evaluated by Montgomery10 and found generally unsatisfactory for gleaning thermodynamic information. This is due to the unknown final states of the alloys caused by the interference of the martensite transformation on cooling iron-rich concentrations and superlattice formation, magnetic transformation, and the varied heat treatments used by investigators of nickel-rich concentrations. As an alternative to the experimental difficulties, indirect estimates of the solid-solution behavior have been made by Fleischer and Elliott11 and Smith et a1.12 From their measurements of the solubility of Fe-Ni alloys in liquid lead, Fleischer and Elliott calculated the nickel activity (aNi) (and integrated for aFe) by assuming: 1) liquid lead has no solubility in solid Fe-Ni alloys, 2) Henry&apos;s law is obeyed throughout the liquid lead-rich phase (0— 12 at. pct Nil, and 3) Henry&apos;s law constant is independent of relative iron and nickel concentrations. The attenuation and phase shift which formations produce in the electromagnetic field of an induction-type electrical well-logging instrument are great enough to substantially affect the response of the tool to formation conductivity under normal logging conditions. The application of the general equations for the propagation of an electromagnetic field in a conductive medium to the transmitter-receiver coil pair of an induction-logging-tool coil system gives an expression for the response which properly takes the propagation effects into account. A comparison of a calculation of this type with the response computed from the commonly used geometric factor concept, which does not include the propagation effect, leads to a factor Go representing the ratio of the responses computed by the two methods. The value of Go decreases not only with increasing formation conductivity, but also with increasing transmitter-to-detector coil spacing. For a single coil pair with a 40-in. spacing, the value of Go is 0.972 in a 20-millimho/m formation. The value is reduced to 0.915 and 0.812 for conductivities of 200 and 1,000 millimhos/m. As a result, the basic signal generated by the induction-logging coil system is not linearly related to formation conductivity as expected from the geometric factor concept. A uniform conductivity scale can be obtained only by adding a suitable nonlinear element to the recording system. The addition of auxiliary coils, having spacings less than the main-coil span, to achieve focusing results in an even greater departure of the basic signal from linearity with conductivity. The solution of the field equations near the interface between two formations of different conductivity gives the curve shape on an induction logging tool in crossing the interface. The addition of auxiliary coils to achieve focusing can add anomalous character to the curve shape in crossing the interface, which might be mistaken for lithological detail. Preliminary calculations which include the propagation effects in the determination of the conductivity correction for thin beds lead to correction factors which are substantially smaller than those obtained from geometric factor considerations. It is apparent that thin-bed corrections derived from geometric factor calculations are of doubtful validity. INTRODUCTION Although the electromagnetic induction type of electrical well log has been used for a number of years and has gained general acceptance in quantitative well-log interpretation, no technically complete investigation of the mechanism and of its operation has been published. The studies which have been presented are based upon the premise that neither the shape nor the intensity of the induction field of the logging tool is in any way affected by the electrical characteristics of the formation. From the inception of induction logging it has been recognized that under some formation conditions the performance of the instrument could be expected to be substantially different from that predicted by the simplified analysis. This anomalous performance has been called "skin effect" since it is the result of the same phenomenon which causes high-frequency alternating currents to flow only near the surface of metallic conductors. In the range of conductivities encountered in the sediments, the formation actually does not exhibit the sharply defined conducting "skin" shown by metals. The gradual modification of the distribution of the currents in the formation, produced by the induction field of the logging tool, is the direct result of phenomena associated with the propagation of the electromagnetic field through the formation. Therefore, it can be much more appropriately described as the "propagation effect". One purpose of this paper is to review the results of a solution of the equations for the performance of a single transmitter-receiver coil pair induction-logging system which takes into account the propagation effect, showing the manner in which the tool performance established by this analysis differs from that derived from the less comprehensive analyses currently in use. IN a previous article preliminary experiments were described, indicating the possibilities of a quantitative spectroscopic method for the determination of small amounts of lead in copper, which would be accurate and rapid, and could be carried out in the refining plant by one not skilled in chemical analysis. A STUDY of the titanium-oxygen system&apos; involved an associated series of measurements of the lattice parameters of the a and TiO phases. The results permit some interesting deductions which are herein reported. A comprehensive survey of the physical PI-operties of the phases in this alloy system has been made by Ehrlich.2 However, only impure titanium was available at that time, so that some revision of his measurements is to be expected. The lattice parameters were calculated from the high angle lines of Debye-Scherrer patterns taken in a 14 cm camera and using filtered CuKa radiation. The specimens were prepared largely by crushing and screening of lump samples which had been quenched from elevated temperatures. Only in the case of low oxygen contents was it necessary to resort to filing and annealing. The results of the lattice parameter studies are graphically presented in Figs. 1 and 2. It will be seen that oxygen produces a pronounced distortion of the c parameter of the a phase (hexagonal close-packed). The trend is in general agreement with Ehrlich&apos;s work, although the divergence of actual parameter values strongly suggests that his titanium was very impure. It will be noted that the a phase of titanium can tolerate the unusually high saturation solubility of about 34 atomic pct 0. By virtue of this unique effect, it is possible to make a calculation of the effective atomic diameter of oxygen when dissolved in a lattice with metallic bonding. This has not been possible before. Ehrlich&apos;s2 density measurements demonstrated that oxygen occupies interstitial positions in the a lattice and the trend of the lattice parameters would certainly support this. In a hexagonal close-packed unit cell the largest interstitial positions lie at (2/3, 1/3, 1/4) and (2/3, 1/3, 3/4). Accordingly, if both of these positions were occupied, the ratio of titanium to oxygen would be 1:1. The extrapolated c parameter may be taken as between 4.93 and 4.99?. The a parameter appears to reach a constant value of 2.955? at low oxygen contents. ONLY a limited amount of information has been published on the effect of thorium as an alloying ingredient in magnesium. McDonald13&apos;2 showed that the addition of thorium in amounts up to 3 pct increases significantly both the ductility and the strength of rolled magnesium sheet. A recent publication by Sauerwald" indicates that thorium contributes strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures to magnesium in both the cast and wrought states. The observations of Sauerwald are confirmed in this paper, which presents the results of a systematic study of the effects of compositional variation on the tensile properties, creep resistance, conductivity, density, and metallography of Mg-Th alloys containing up to 50 pct Th both in the sand-cast and in the extruded states. The effect of the addition of cerium to Mg-Th alloys is also reported. Experimental Methods The alloys studied in this investigation were pre.pared in small laboratory melts according to the melting practice described by Nelson4 as the crucible method. Electrolytic magnesium was used as the starting material to which the thorium* was introduced in metallic form. It was observed that the behavior of thorium in molten magnesium with respect to reaction with protective fluxes is similar to that of rare-earth metals. In order to obtain the highest possible alloying efficiency, it is necessary to use non-MgC1, fluxes and to apply all the precautions described by Marande6 for melting, alloying, and casting magnesium-rare-earth alloys. .Under these conditions it is possible to obtain an alloying efficiency in the range of 85 to 95 pct. The Mg-Th-Ce alloys were made with cerium of the highest purity available, not with the commercial product "misch-metal" which contains approximately 50 pct Ce. The total rare-earth content of this material was 97.1 pct, of which 0.3 pct was rare-earth metals other than cerium; the major impurities comprising the balance were iron and magnesium. The thorium and cerium contents of each alloy were determined chemically. Test bars 6% in. long with a 2% in. long reduced section of % in. diam were cast in sand molds using a four-baf pattern. In most cases, a 3 in. diam extrusion billet 10 in. long was cast in a steel mold from the same melt used for making the sand-cast test bars. For the higher thorium alloys, it was necessary to remelt the foundry scrap from the test bars in order to make the extrusion billets. The billets were scalped to a diameter of 2 15/16 in. and the ends faced to a length of 9% in. as limited by the size of the extrusion container. The alloys were extruded into % in. diam rod on a 500-ton direct-extrusion press. The details of the extrusion process are as follows: Billet preheat 925°F (2 to 16 hr) Container temperature 900 °F Die temperature 900°F Extrusion speed 10 ft per min Reduction ratio 36:1 Percent reduction 97.3 Alloys containing up to 10.2 pct Th were preheated at 925°F for 2 hr; all alloys with higher thorium contents were preheated for 16 hr.
