I. INTRODUCTION. THE mineral gypsum, CaSO, + 2 H2O, has been used for many years as a sulphurizing and basic flux in several smelting¬operations. Thus, in smelting oxide nickel-ore in the blast furnace, it is commonly added to the charge to furnish the sulphur necessary for collecting the metal in a matte, and a base for slagging the siliceous gangue. In the concentration of lead-copper matte in the reverberatory furnace it has been used for years at Freiberg, Saxony1 for a similar purpose, and for producing at the same time a copper-matte with less than 0.15 per cent. Fe. The latest use gypsum has been put to is in the blast-roasting process of Carmichael-Bradford.2 The term "blast-roasting," given by A. S. Dwight3 to the Dwight-Lloyd method of roasting and agglomerating ,I is a happy generic term which covers the ground better than the " lime-roasting" of Ingalls' or the " pot-roasting " of Austin,6 in that it leaves the operation independent of the character of the flux and the form of apparatus, and retains the characteristic feature of this class of processes-namely, that of using forced draft. In the Carmichael-Bradford process the dehydrated material, mixed with galena-concentrate, acts as a diluent and a flux. The process differs in this from the Huntington-Heberlein7 and the Savelsberg8 processes, in both of which limestone is used.

The rate of reduction of silica to silicon by carbon at 1550° to 1700°C in iron blast-furnace type slag-metal systems has been investigated. In the tower portion of the temperature range oxygen transport in the metal boundary layer at the slag-tal interface is probably rate limiting. A second step, which apparently involves a chemical process in the slag at the slag-metal interface, appears to be rate limiting when the oxygen-transport limitation is avoided. Above 1650°C rate control of the reduction by carbon probably is mixed between the two steps. INVESTIGATIONS1.2 into the equilibrium distribution of silicon between graphite-saturated slags and metals typical of iron blast-furnace practice show that, under the experimental conditions specified, the reduction of silica to silicon is relatively slow compared with the rates of other slag-metal reactions under similar conditions. For this reason, the reduction of silica in blast-furnace slag-metal systems was considered to be an interesting subject for further study. Investigations of the kinetics of the reaction3-5 suggest that several possible steps may be rate controlling, and that the rate-controlling step depends not only on the physical state of the systems but also on the configuration of the apparatus. The main objects of the investigation reported here were to sug- gest plausible reaction paths for the reduction of silica under the experimental conditions chosen and to determine the step or steps which control the rate of reduction of silica. EXPERIMENTAL Two types of experiments involving the reduction of silica from the slag were carried out. In the first, the only reducing agent present was carbon (graphite), for which the over-all reaction is (SiO2) +2C(gr) —Si + 2Co(g) [l] The second type was a graphite-saturated ferro-silicon-iron concentration cell. In it silica in the slag could be reduced either by carbon according to Eq. [I], or by a reaction of electrochemical nature in which silicon was oxidized at the ferrosilicon-slag interface and silica was reduced at the slag-iron interface without the formation of CO. The two types of experiment are described below. Reduction of Silica with Carbon as the Only Available Reducing Agent. The reduction of silica was accomplished by allowing a liquid lime-alumina-silica slag and graphite-saturated iron to react in an induction-heated graphite crucible. The crucible was 2.25 in. diameter and 5 in. deep; it was fitted with a graphite stirrer which penetrated through the slag and into the metal, Fig. 1. The slag and metal charges weighed 350 g each. Pure carbon monoxide at a pressure of 1 atm was maintained above the melt by passing the purified gas through the crucible at a rate of 0.5 liter per min. The gas did not stir either the slag or metal. Temperature measurements were made by sighting an optical pyrometer down the hollow stirrer rod into a 1/4-in. hole drilled in the stirrer blade. THE importance of having perfectly pure metals has led me to present to the Institute a record of some of the trials that have been made to obtain these metals, and also to show one of the largest specimens of extremely thin metal plate which has ever been made. The malleability of metals varies generally directly with their purity, and hence it is only with very pure metals that thin sheets can be obtained. The competition among different manufacturers has been so great at times as to lead to expensive and apparently useless experiments in obtaining in the first instance very thin sheets, and afterwards very large and thin sheets of metal, apparently with no other purpose than that of being able to say that they had produced the thinnest or the largest thin sheet that had ever been made. These experiments were at first confined exclusively to iron, their object being to show the great dexterity of manipulation, as well as the purity of the metal manufactured. They have since been extended to almost all metals by electrical action, and have gone far beyond the limits of what was possible with purely mechanical means. The processes which have been used are rolling or hammering, electrical deposition in a vacuum, and lastly, electrical deposition on plates, easily soluble in acids. The first and last of these methods have been known and practiced for a very long time, having been used to make thin sheets of almost all the metals. The other is of quite recent application. In the iron manufacture, the strife to produce these thin sheets was commenced in the year 1865, by the Sligo Iron Works writing to a firm in Birmingham, England, on a sheet of iron containing 270 square centimeters, and weighing only 4.469 grams. For some time this was considered to be the thinnest sheet iron that could be made. T. W. Booker & Co., of Cardiff, England, however, produced a few months afterward, a sheet of the same size, weighing only 4.015 grams. This was succeeded by one rolled by Neville and Everitt, of Llannelly, weighing only 3.174 grams. This was followed by one from Hallam, of Swansea, which was 283 square centimeters in size, and weighed but 2.979 grams; and this by one rolled by R. Wil-

THIS paper is a study of the differential flotation of the sulphide minerals in the presence of salts of silver, lead and zinc. In practice, accidental activation due to these salts is more important than their use as reagents to replace copper sulphate. The general method of investigation has been based upon contact tests, the temperature of 35°C. being chosen in conformity with earlier work. Potassium ethyl xanthate and potassium amyl xanthate were selected as collectors and pure sulphide minerals were used. The experimental procedure has been outlined in earlier papers and all solutions were kept carbonate-free.'' Contact, or spreading of an air bubble, at a mineral surface indicates the presence of an adsorbed collector film. PURITY OF REAGENTS The xanthates were purified in the usual manner.1 Neither the cyanide nor the sodium hydroxide solutions contained sufficient carbonate to give a precipitate with barium chloride solution. The silver sulphate was prepared from pure silver nitrate by evaporation with concentrated sulphuric acid until there was no evidence of brown fumes. This solution was diluted and the difficultly soluble sulphate washed with water so that unchanged nitrate was dissolved. The resultant crystal-line powder was pure white. The lead and zinc salts were prepared by dissolving especially pure lead and zinc in C.P. nitric and sulphuric acid solution and the crystals drained. The standard solutions were checked by titration. It was felt desirable to use the sulphate radical wherever possible, but since lead sulphate was insufficiently soluble for the purpose of the experiments, it was necessary to use some other lead salt. A.R. copper sulphate was used without further purification. RESULTS The results are presented in the accompanying figures; the areas of noncontact (nonflotation) are shaded in Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11; in the remainder they lie to the right of the curve. Zinc Sulphate The curves in Fig. I are to be compared with those for Fig. 2, for which zinc sulphate is absent. This comparison shows that the influence of the zinc ion is usually small. Its influence is more marked, however, for chalcopyrite in the absence of cyanide. The influence of zinc sulphate is also marked for copper-activated sphalerite, for which tests were made only in the absence of cyanide. The results are of importance in the separation of pyrite from copper-activated sphalerite when zinc sulphate is added in the lead flotation section (p. 204 of ref. I). Sphalerite does not adsorb the collector (i.e., become floatable) under the conditions chosen.

As a result of studies distributed over the earth- including ocean basins as well as continents- some tectonists recognize four dominant structural trends: 1) northwest; 2) northeast; 3) nearly east- west, or equatorial; and 4) nearly north-south, or meridional. Baker' proposed a theory to account for these trends and Sonder5 called their world-wide arrangement the regmatic shear pattern. Moody and Hill6 proposed a much more complicated shear network which, although fascinating and perhaps ultimately useful, will not be followed here. In a recent review of deformation within the Cordillera, Wisser7 mentioned the four fundamental directions. The fact that many geologists deny the existence of the regmatic shear pattern implies that the fundamental structures are far from obvious. It may mean, also, that some geologists are not accustomed to examine regional and world maps analytically. The maps require much study, and certain features, should be isolated on overlays. Even so, with the present limited knowledge, uncertainties remain. The following analysis is a qualitative experiment, subject to change as information accumulates, and should be supplemented by the western sheet of the Tectonic Map of the United States.8

Metalliferous sediments are present through- out much of the ocean basins and are locally prominent in the sedimentary column on and near the Nazca plate of the east-southeast Pacific Ocean. They typically have anomalously high concentrations of the transition metals, and those on parts of the East Pacific Rise, the Bauer Deep, and other basinal depressions may contain more then 12% iron, 4% manganese, 0.1 % each of copper and nickel, and geochemically significant amounts of zinc, cobalt, molybdenum, arsenic, beryllium, silver, and possibly gold. Statistical interprerarions of chemical data indicate that most metals in sediments on the East Pacific Rise were derived from a hydrothermal component related to submarine volcanism, whereas those in basinal sediments accumulated from both hydrothermal and hydrogenous components of sedimentation. However, concentrations of the metals are controlled more by the absence of biogenic and detrital components than by nearness to centers of hydrothermal activity.

A unique and reproducible method is presented for the determination of water vapor in tough pitch wire bar copper. The procedure involves reduction of the water vapor with molten aluminum to form hydrogen, which is subsequently measured by mass spectroscopy. Average water vapor pressures within the porosities of the wire bar samples are calculated. Correlation is to exist between the specific gravities of the samples and their measured water vapor contents. The method should find application as a very sensitive means of detecting hydrogen embrittlement in copper. The nature and quantity of gases evolved and retained during the horizontal casting of tough pitch wire bar copper have long been of interest to the metallurgist. Considerable work has been done at this laboratory on the determination of these gases. The work has involved not only qualitative but also quantitative analysis, so as to provide a basis for a total accounting of the porosity which is associated with the cast product. From a knowledge of the gas-forming elements within the copper, and the practice of melting and protecting it with a reducing flame followed by contact with a charcoal cover in the casting ladle, the gases which one might expect to find in the pores of the cast product are sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and water vapor. Hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen, and hydrocarbons would be other possibilities; however vacuum fusion-mass spectroscopy techniques employed at this laboratory have shown that no hydrogen sulfide and only traces of nitrogen and methane are present. It is highly improbable according to phillipsl that any sulfur dioxide could be evolved in wire bar copper with 10 ppm or less sulfur under normal freezing conditions. Mackay and smith2 have noted that porosity due to sulfur dioxide only becomes noticeable at concentrations above 20 ppm S. Investigation of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide by a variation in the method of Bever and Floe showed that these two gases could only account, at 760 mm and 1064°C (Cu-Cua eutectic temperature), for a maximum of about 25 pct of the total porosity in a wire bar having a specific gravity of 8.40 g per cu cm. phillips' has noted that no normal furnace atmosphere is ever sufficiently rich in hydrogen to cause porosity in copper from hydrogen alone. In addition, using a hot vacuum extraction technique for hydrogen,4 values have never been observed in excess of 10 ppb in tough pitch wire bar. On the basis of the preceding considerations of gases in tough pitch wire bar, only water vapor is left to account for the major portion of the porosity. Direct determinations of water vapor are virtually impossible at low concentrations by any presently known technique, due to adsorption and desorption within the walls of the apparatus used.5 The present investigation deals with a method for the determination of water vapor by an indirect procedure, using molten aluminum as a reducing agent to form hydrogen according to the reaction: 2A1 + 3H2O — A12O3 + 3H2 The evolved hydrogen can then be measured quantitatively by mass spectroscopy. EXPERIMENTAL A 10-g piece of 99.9+ pct A1 was charged into a porous alumina crucible (Laboratory Equipment Co., No. 528-30). Fig. 1 shows the crucible in place at the bottom of an 8-in.-long quartz thimble. A funnel tube with two l1/8-in.-OD sidearms extending at a 90-deg angle from each other was attached to the top of the thimble. One of the sidearms was joined to the inlet system of the mass spectrometer (Consolidated Electrodynamics Corp. Model 21-620A) via a mercury diffusion pump situated between two dry-ice traps. The copper samples were placed in the other sidearm, followed by a glass-enclosed magnetic stirring bar for pushing the samples into the crucible. All ground joints were sealed with vacuum-grade wax. The entire system was evacuated and the aluminum was heated with a T-2.5 Lepel High Frequency Induction Furnace for 21/2 hr at a temperature visually estimated to be 900°C. The temperature was then lowered and the hydrogen was monitored on the mass spectrometer until it was given off at a constant rate of about 4 to 5 1 per hr. This rate corresponded to a slope of 2 to 3 divisions per min on the X3 attenuation of a 10-mv recorder at a hydrogen sensitivity of approximately 100 divisions per 1. The development by the U. S. Bureau of Mines of a process for purifying manganese by electrolysis has stimulated interest in manganese alloys. While recent publications have shown some alloys of manganese and copper to possess rather unusual properties, none have included information on tensile properties, which have an important bearing on the usefulness of the alloys. Manganese-copper alloys can be heat-treated, since the single phases that exist at high temperatures may be retained by quenching. According to Persson,1 when quenched alloys containing from about 30 to nearly IOO per cent manganese are reheated, alpha manganese is precipitated (Fig. I). Calculations based on Persson's X-ray data indicate that this decomposi-tion is accompanied by a change in volume of as much as ; per cent. The reason that this large volume change has not been noted probably is the slow rate at which equilibrium is reached by these alloys. In an investigation on hardening by cold-work and heat-treatment, Dean and Anderson3 found that quenched alloys increase in hardness with manganese content and that high-manganese alloys harden very slowly with cold-work, while high-copper alloys harden much more rapidly. Heat-treatment has little effect on manganese-copper alloys containing less than 40 per cent Mn, and affects those alloys containing more than 40 per cent in accordance with their manganese content and heat-treating temperature. Dean and Anderson4 also found that cold-work increased electrical resistance of alloys containing from 50 to 80 per cent Mn, and that heat-treatment of alloys containing from 40 to 96 per cent Mn altered the electrical resistance considerably. Dean, Anderson and Potter6 have shown that the high vibration damping capacity that characterizes manganese-copper alloys containing 40 to go per cent Mn is affected by cold-work and heat-treatments. Highest vibration damping capacity at low stresses was obtained by heating for 2 hr. at 450°C. (842°F.) after quenching from solution temperatures. Preparalion of Alloys.—The alloys for these tests were melted in a 17-lb. basic-lined high-frequency induction furnace using electrolytic manganese, grade A ingot copper and a 70-30 CU-Mn master alloy (69.80 per cent Cu, 0.12 Fe, 0.04 Si, 0.006 S, 0.07 C, balance Mn). The manganese was heated slowly to expel excess dissolved gases and melted before the addition of copper. No fluxes or covers were used. The melts were cast in tapered iron molds and the ingots were reduced go per cent when forged to 1/2-in. rounds. These rods were given 2-hr. solution treatments at temperatures that depended upon the composition (Table I). Tensile Tests.—The tensile specimens, 0.313-in. diameter (1.25-in. gauge length),

IN the course of a study of stress corrosion cracking of AuCu,, it was necessary to develop new electropolishing and metallographic etching methods. The techniques are generally useful for Cu-Au alloys, including the AuCu composition in which transformation markings are well delineated. For electropolishing, the only satisfactory electrolyte and procedure that has been found1 has the composition given in Table I. The solution must be vigorously stirred while polishing and the temperature maintained in the range of 55" to 62°C. The electrolyte is very unstable and can be used only for 10 to 15 min after which its color changes and a dark-brown precipitate forms. The polishing time is between 1 and 4 min depending on the initial surface preparation. The use of a hood is recommended to avoid the danger of cyanide gas which may form at one of the electrodes even though the solution is alkaline. The optimum current and voltage conditions for vertical anode and platinum cathode are on the plateau shown in Fig. 1, in which voltage is measured across the cell terminals. At voltages below the plateau, etching of grain boundaries occurs and under some conditions, which have not been clearly defined, octahedral etch figures are observed. For general purpose grain-size determination in polycrystalline alloys, a 3 pct solution of iodine in methyl alcohol is used with excellent results. However, when it is necessary to reveal small orientation differences or concentration gradients in an alloy, the iodine etch is not satisfactory. For this purpose, a highly satisfactory etching procedure was developed during this investigation. It involves the use of the vapor given off by freshly prepared aqua regia. The solution employed is 3HC1 to lHNO, which decomposes in accordance with the reaction HNO, + 3HC1 = NOCl + 2H,O + Cl,. The polished specimen surface is held about 1 to 2 cm above an aqua regia solution for 2 to 10 sec depending on the intensity of the contrast required and the surface is not subsequently washed. The results obtained with a coarse grained cast structure are shown in Fig. 2. Subgrain boundaries in a single crystal and concentration gradients within the boundaries are developed by the same treatment with the results shown in Fig. 3. Obviously, any conclusions regarding structure-dependent properties will be modified by the pronounced heterogeneity, which is not clearly evident when more conventional methods are used. Interesting structural details are also revealed by treatment for 4 hr at 850°C in unpurified tank argon. Fig. 4 shows a pattern characteristic of orientation-dependent oxidation.

In June, 1965, Sanderson and scully5 reported at the Conference on Environment Sensitive Mechanical Properties of Materials at the Research Institute for Advanced Studies at Baltimore that thin foils of titanium could be prepared by chemical polishing in a mixture of 44 pct HF and 73 pct HNO3 in the volumetric ratio 2:3. The technique is simpler than that since reported by Rice and Orava. As-received annealed titanium (containing 0.8 pct Fe and 30 ppm H) in the form of sheet 0.05 cm thick is placed in the solution and moved up and down. The reaction is violent but suitable foils are obtained very easily and consistently. A typical micrograph is shown in Fig. 3. The small precipitates were not identified. Yamane and ueda6 observed many spotlike features which they referred to as small dislocation loops. While their spots may be due to the reaction of the warm foil with the air as suggested by Rice and Orava, the precipitates in Fig. 3 are also found when foils of titanium are prepared by electro-polishing at low temperatures and subsequently examined in the electron microscope without any inter- mediate warming. Furthermore, they are not a surface effect. It is necessary to add that alloys of titanium cannot be so easily thinned by the chemical polishing solution described above since it contaminates the a, phase with hydrogen and produces y hydride. These matters are described at length in a paper7 and their relevance to stress corrosion is considered elsewhere.'-* Author's Reply The authors are grateful to Dr. Scully for bringing to our attention his hitherto unpublished technique for thinning unalloyed titanium, and deeply regret the unintended apparent duplication. The chemical thinning solution (7 parts HNO3 and 3 parts HF, by volume) reported by us is the same as that with which, for some period in the past, we had experienced success in the preparation of foils from single and polycrystalline niobium. Its subsequent effective application to titanium was a logical step, which, clearly independently of Scully, was conceived by Mr. Rice, to whom full credit is due. A few comments are warranted concerning some of the details of the preceding Discussion. It is evident to the discerning reader that the two thinning techniques under consideration are chemically almost identical, and in that sense are equally "simple". The chemical aspect is, of course, the one of primary importance in both communications. Thereafter, the relative simplicity is dictated by the mechanics of the actual thinning operation selected by the individual investigator. Our standard dimpling, or dishing, procedure was chosen with a view toward providing, for the electron transparent areas of the sample, the maximum protection from extraneous deformation during handling. That the long, straight dislocations visible in Scully's electron micrograph of a seemingly recovered structure closely resemble handling dislocations would tend to indicate the merit of our adopted technique. Features similar to those which Scully has attributed to precipitates, without any apparent diffraction contrast confirmation, were not observed in any of our clean foils taken from annealed or deformed specimens. This was admittedly somewhat surprising since the 3700 ppm (nominal) Fe in the A-70 commercial-grade titanium examined should have given rise to TiFe precipitates. Presumably these existed but were un-resolvable. Curiously, Scully's "precipitate1' density is fairly high although the iron content quoted was less than one-fourth of that in our material. One is forced to conclude from the evidence that prior thermal and mechanical treatments are responsible for the two different types of structure observed.

Lead cake, a zinc smelter flue dust residue, consists primarily of lead sulfate. Characteristic properties of lead cake were determined in order to aid the understanding of reaction mechanisms involved in bismuth removal from lead cake by sulfuric acid digestion. Sp gr (specific gravity) measurements, surface area measurements, and photomicrographs revealed that the particles of lead cake are quite porous and seem to consist of an agglomeration of submicron grains (0.4 pm) fused together in a manner similar to cement clinker. Analysis of experimental rate data, which was independent of particle size, indicates that the dissolution reaction involves two distinct, rate limiting steps. The initial stage of reaction appears to be limited mainly by intergranular diffusion of the reactant, hydrogen ion, while the latter stage of reaction appears to be controlled by diffusion of soluble reaction products through the reaction product layer of the individual grains.

The phase boundaries of "TiNi" have been accurately determined by high-tewperature X-ray diffraction and metallo-graphic techniques. The phase (centered at 51 pct Ni) has a restricted range of homogeneity at 500°C, and a much greater range at 800°C. "TiNi" in all alloys containing less than 51 pct Ni decomposes rapidly and reversibly at 36°C to form a previously unreported phase. ThE region of the titanium nickel system corresponding to the phase "TiNi" has been the subject of several investigations.1,2,4-7 Laves and wallbaum1 reported "TiNi" as a body-centered cubic (a2) Phase, and Duwez and Taylor2 determined its para- meter to be 2.986. Duwez and Taylor also reported that "TiNi" decomposed into "Ti2Ni" and "TiNi3" on prolonged heating at 650" and 800°C, which led McQuillan3 to suggest a sluggish eutectoid reaction between "TiNis" and "Ti2Ni". Margolin, Ence, and Nielsen,' working with higher purity alloys, found no evidence of this decomposition. They showed the "TiNi" phase region extending from 49 to 54 pct*

This paper is in the nature of a rough preliminary report on the progress that has been made in the application of the mass spectrometer to various problems arising in the petroleum industry. A few years ago the authors considered a number of the problems that were arising in the qualitative and quantitative measurement of small amounts of hydrocarbons. The methods available of making analyses by chemical techniques appeared to leave much room for improvement. Without going into the reasons at this point, attention was turned to the possibility of employing physical instead of chemical methods of accomplish-ing the desired results. A preliminary investigation disclosed that the mass spectrometer presented a possibility of solving many problems which could not easily be accomplished by other methods. Work was begun in developing the necessary apparatus and technique. A great deal of encouragement and many valuable suggestions were received from Dr. Robert A. Millikan, Dr. W. R. Smythe, and Dr. W. N. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, and from Dr. E. 0. Lawrence, who recently received the Nobel Prize, of the University of California. The authors particularly wish to acknowl-edge the very great willingness of these out-standing scientists to be helpful in solving many of the problems that were involved. So far as the authors are aware, this was the first application of the mass spectrometer to commercial work. The results were considerably better than had at first been anticipated. Briefly, it is pos-sible to run a qualitative and quantitative analysis of an unknown mixture of hydro-carbon gases, with an accuracy of better than plus or minus 5 per cent of each of the various constituents. An exceedingly high degree of sensitivity has been obtained, and a relatively short time is required to com-plete an analysis. Furthermore, it is un-necessary to separate a mixture of gases into its various components in order to complete the analysis.

THE increased moisture due to water¬spraying for coal dust control is of interest even for mines from which the coal is to be wet-washed before screening, because in many cases wet coal dust materially decreases the loading efficiency of men an equipment at the faces. It also causes serious increase in the normal wear and deterioration of all equipment with which it comes in contact. It is important to the consumer if it increases his as-receive moisture. No attempt will be made in this paper t cover the entire subject of water-spraying of coal for dust control. It will be confine to discussion and data on (r) percentages c dust in bituminous coals, (2) moisture increases due to spraying for dust control in mines or plants by methods which have proven satisfactory for periods of one to five or more years, and (3) a few suggestions for research. SIZE AND PERCENTAGE OF COAL DUST The U. S. Bureau of Mines1 classifies a coal dust all bituminous coal passing 20-mesh sieve (0.0328 in. square opening; The percentage of such dust to be found is ROM coal, of course, varies widely wit. the characteristics of the seam, and with the methods used in the mining and in the preparation of the coal. ROM screen analyses of 12 U. S. coals selected at random from personal files given in Table I show: A few other screen analyses examined indicating 40 pct or more of 2o-mesh X o dust in 3/8 in. X o-sizes were not included because of uncertainty that they were representative. The number of results in Table I is not sufficient to give a reliable estimate of the average, or of the range to be expected, but it indicates that in every case the coal dust is a relatively large percentage of the total ROM coal, and, of course, a progressively larger percentage of resultants as the larger sizes are separated for marketing.

The conductivity of liquid copper sulfide has been measured as a function of the mole fraction of sulfur in the melt at three temperatures: 1170°, 1250°, and 1300°C. The results show that a) the conductivity of copper-rich Cu,S is independent of the sulfur pressure in the furnace, and b) the conductivity of sulfur-rich copper sulfide increases rapidly with sulfur pressure. Assuming that the band theory is applicable to liquids leads to the conclusion that copper-rich copper sulfide is an intrinsic semiconductor, in which case electrons act as carriers. The activation energy for conduction in this case has been calculated to be 0.7 ev. On the other hand, sulfur-rich copper sulfide behaves as a p-type semiconductor, positive holes being responsible for conduction. IN order to elucidate the structure of Liquid copper (1) sulfide, Derge, Pound, and Osuchl have studied the electrical conductivity of this compound as a function of temperature. Their results showed that the conductivity is rather high, of the order of 100 ohm" cm", and that the temperature coefficient of conductivity is positive. This high conductivity seemed to indicate electronic rather than ionic conduction. This conclusion was checked further by Derge, Pound, and Yang,2 who measured the current efficiencies of copper sulfide melts at various temperatures. In all cases, the current efficiency was found to be nil, indicating the absence of appreciable ionic contribution to the conduction in

FOREWORD THE tests herein described are part of an extended series of experiments, performed by the authors together with J. F. McClelland and L. W. Bahney, on the reclamation of metallics from foundry and manufacturing-plant scrap. The most obstinate problem encountered was the proper cleaning of the metal. INTRODUCTION In the manufacture of brass and brass products the weight of the finished product leaving the plant is much less than the total weight of copper and zinc entering. A small part of this discrepancy is due to the unavoidable oxidation of the metals in melting, but by far the largest part of the loss is in the form of metallic particles of copper, zinc, and brass. These losses occur principally at three points in the process: (a) in the casting-shop ashes; (b) in the slags from furnaces melting scrap brass; (c) in material spilled on the floor throughout the manufacturing process. The amount of these products in some plants is nearly 100 tons per 24 hours. Casting-shop ashes contain the metal spilled from the crucibles during melting and pouring, and the metal included in the slags formed in the melting process. The ashes also contain pieces of broken crucibles with adhering metal; 20 to 30 per cent. of unburned coal is also present. The metal in casting-shop ashes contains clean pieces of zinc or copper ingots weighing 1 to 2 lb., jagged pieces of metal of all shapes ranging in size from several inches down to the finest dust, and shot and botryoidal shapes ranging in size from 2 or 3 in. down to 0.01 mm. or less in diameter. Slags from furnaces melting scrap brass contain metal in the form of small shot.

INTRODUCTION Industrial minerals can have similar financing requirements to those needs of metaliferrous and coal mining projects. One of the outstanding differences is the understanding of the many different markets that these industrial minerals represent. There are in excess of 30 principal industrial minerals ranging in terms of annual production from the largest quantity such as sand and gravel, to possibly the smallest quantity of production of a legitimate industrial mineral which may be defined as industrial and rough gem diamond. (See Tables 1 and 2) Project finance techniques, analytical methods, and information requirements are covered elsewhere in this Chapter and Chapter 10. Some comments on equity finance aspects follow. EQUITY AMOUNT The amount of equity in a financing transaction provides a cushion to the lender in case the project runs into trouble. Generally speaking, the greater the amount of risk in a project, the more equity a lender will require. The amount of cash equity in a project financing transaction is between 25 and 40 percent. The amount of leverage (debt/equity) is negotiable based on such factors as the strength and extent of the sponsor's undertakings, of the project's economics, and the term of a strong sales contract. Naturally, a borrower seeks to obtain d loan with as little equity required as can be negotiated. Zero percent equity is usually associated with a take-or-pay contract (a hell-or-high- water unconditional commitment under which the purchaser must pay for the commodity as though it were shipped regardless of whether it is actually mined or shipped) with a financially strong corporate entity i.e., the parent company or an end user. As a take-or-pay contract is tantamount to a guarantee of payment, the banker views the credit basis of the loan as being other than the borrower's mining operation and therefore will analyze the creditworthiness of the institution purchasing the commodity on the basis of its corporate balance sheet. Do not confuse a take-or-pay contract with a take-if- tendered or take-and-pay contract. Another means in the United States of obtaining zero percent equity is the carved out production payment financing, typical of coal mine financing. This involves the sale, or conveyance, by the owner of the mineral property of a production payment to a nominally capitalized company. The nominally capitalized company is formed solely to buy the production payment and usually borrows 100 percent of the purchase price from a lender. Equity amounts of 10 to 20 percent generally are found in transactions which employ techniques such as an advance sale or a subordinated lease/loan. These agreements are viewed as quasi equity by most banks for several reasons. First, the proceeds represent a cash infusion early in the project's life - usually prior to the bank lending any funds. Thus, the repayment schedule is "behind" that of the bank debt. In the case of an advance sale, repayment is in the form of a long-term supply contract with favorable terms, usually priced close to the mining operation's costs. There is also usually a requirement that all costs of the project be paid for by the loan or equity, often making the sponsors financially responsible for any cost overruns. Cost overruns are a major risk in any project, large or small, and are often due to unforeseen factors such as wildcat strikes, a piece of faulty equipment, or any event which delays completion, e.g., remote location, weather, etc.. . The question of how overruns are covered can be negotiated. For example, in addition to the original debt/equity ratio of the project, there can also be a cost overrun ratio that will

IRA B. JORALEMON, Warren, Ariz.-This paper has covered the situation so well that I have few suggestions to offer. Two points, however, are shown more clearly in the lower mines of the Calumet Arizona Mining Co. than in Copper Queen workings, and may be worth mentioning. The first is the usual association of high-grade primary sulphide orebodies with much larger masses of pyrite and silica, averaging less than 1 per cent. copper. The richer areas occur sometimes around the borders of the lean pyrite bodies, and sometimes entirely within them. While as yet we have not been able to find any certain reason for the location of high-grade sulphides in low-grade masses, it seems likely that the age of fracturing is one controlling feature. The first stage of mineralization, with pyrite and silica, had the effect of sealing up the rock. The later solutions, richer in copper, could pene-
