Early production records are practically nonexistent, although the early geological survey reports mention a number of mines as being in operation at the dates of the field surveys. Reports of the Bureau of Statistics began in 1878, and as usual, the tonnages reported were undoubtedly small. County histories gave some production figures, but not many. The use of the Indiana block coal in blast furnaces furnished a substantial market for a number of years, which ended about the close of the Civil War. Some coke was made from Indiana coal for several years in the eighteen-forties, as is described in the chapter on Coke. (Chapter 35.)

ALUMINUM powder is a well-known article of commerce and in various forms has been marketed widely for use in paint, for pyrotechnic purposes and for exothermic mixtures. For a number of reasons, how- ever, aluminum powder has not been employed extensively in powder metallurgy, although a great many proposals along this line have been offered. Aluminum and aluminum-alloy powders oxidize readily upon exposure to air and the thin film of oxide (or hydroxide) thus formed is highly refractory, in that ordinary gaseous reducing agents such as hydrogen or carbon monoxide do not reduce the oxide to metal at temperatures below the melting point of aluminum. It has been thought that the presence of these films of oxide on aluminum particles would interfere markedly in powder metallurgical work and a number of suggestions have been made, either for preventing the formation of the film through the production of the powders in inert or reducing atmospheres, or for the removal of the oxide by means of powerful reducing agents, including "nascent" or atomic hydrogen released from metal hydrides. 4 second and more serious difficulty in the use of aluminum and aluminum-alloy powders in powder metallurgy resides in the fact that during compression such powders tend to adhere or cold-weld to the die walls, thus interfering with the formation and ejection of a compact. A third difficulty, which has been encountered only with aluminum-alloy powders, is their hardness when compared with elemental aluminum. Certain of these powders are susceptible to age- hardening, which further hinders the formation of strong green compacts. These conditions are particularly true of atomized aluminum-alloy powders. Even in the annealed condition, plastic deformation of alloy powders under pressure is low when compared with unalloyed powders. This fact, coupled with the lower corrosion resistance of the alloy powders, is probably the significant factor in our failure to obtain strong sintered pieces. METHODS OF PRODUCING THE POWER Many methods have been proposed for manufacture of aluminum powder, only a few of which are used commercially. Several of the more important processes include: (I) atomization of the molten metal; (2) mechanical pulverization and other types of comminution; and (3) graining, in which molten aluminum is stirred during freezing. For pigment and certain pyrotechnic uses aluminum flake powder is desirable, because of its greater proportion of surface to volume; and large quantities of such material are made by a procedure that involves stamping or ball milling. (San Francisco meeting, October, 1911.) THE nature of slimes handled in the treatment of gold- and silver-ores has been discussed in technical literature to a considerable extent. The subject of slime-filtration from the practical worker's stand-point has also received much comment, and scattered through the literature of the subject are descriptions of many slime-filtration installations. Articles of this nature serve a valuable purpose and assist materially in the design of new and the improvement of old plants. The subject of the physics of slime-filtration has been touched upon to only a slight extent. The underlying principles are worthy of more intensive study and experimentation than they have received, and the main purpose of this paper is to present the results of such study and experimental work as will serve to make clear in part at least many of the principles which control the filtration of slime. Nature of Slime. Much has bean written concerning an accurate definition of the term ? slime," but no comprehensive definition seems to be generally accepted. The reason for this is clear. A slime consists of at least three different substances, each, when separated, possessing distinctly different physical and to a certain extent chemical properties. These substances are extremely fine sand, a colloidal material which may be and generally is in a coagulated condition, and a colloidal material which is in a non-coagulated condition. In the early part of the last century textile fabric was used for the filtration of products of combustion and lampblack was obtained by passing smoke through a series of canvas bags. Natural draft was used to draw and force the smoke through the bags. About 1850 bag filtration was used for collecting zinc oxide. Around 1876 it was introduced for collecting the fume from lead-ore hearth smelting in Missouri. Shortly afterward it was used, first at Portland, Me., and later at Canon City, Colo., for the collection and production of zinc-lead pigment in treating mixed zinc-lead sulphides. In 1890 the Globe Smelting & Refining Co., at Denver, Colo., installed a bag house containing 1,458 bags for the recovery of fume from silver-lead blast furnaces. This installation was too small to handle all of the gases and was increased to approximately 2,300 bags. In 1900 the number of bags was again increased, making a total of approximately 2,800. The usual difficulties incident to new installations were encountered, but they were gradually overcome and the bag house became accepted as standard practice for this class of smelting, As all of the bag houses built since have followed the general lines of the Globe installation, a short description may be of interest. The general construction of the Globe bag house is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The building is 149 ft. 8 in. long by 67 ft. 4 in. wide and 40 ft. 2 in. high from the basement floor to the eaves of the roof, having brick walls 26 in. thick from the foundation up to the thimble floor, from there an 18-in. wall for 16 ft. and a 13-in. wall from this point to the top, a distance of 14 ft. 2 in. Additional stiffening is given to the walls above the basement by pilasters located every 16 ft. The end-wall construction is similar to that of the side walls with the exception of the spacing of the pilasters, which is somewhat greater. The roof is made of corrugated iron laid on 1-in. boards and supported by a timber frame work spaced 16 ft. apart resting on the basement partition walls. On top is a louver running the

The oxidation of platinum at high temperatures (above 800°C) is controlled by boundary-layer diffusion, except at the lowest pressures. The rate of oxidation is determined by the rate of diffusion of oxide through the boundary layer away from the platinum. This is in contrast to the situation in tungsten and molybdenum oxidation, where the rate is controlled largely by the diffusion of oxygen through the boundary layer towards the metal. The difference in mechanism is a consequence of the much lower rate of oxidation of platinum. Evidence is presented that supports this mechanism for the oxidation of platinum. SOME years ago we reported1 a study of the oxidation of platinum in ordinary oxygen in the temperature region above 800°C, where the oxide is volatile. All the data available up to that time had been obtained with platinum crucibles or plates heated in tube furnaces. The results were widely variant and highly dependent on the flow rate of gas through the furnace: the faster the gas flow rate, the higher the measured oxidation rate. These results indicated to us2 that reaction equilibrium was being approached in the furnace and that the rate was diffusion limited. To minimize these effects, we employed1 electrically heated ribbons placed in a cooled bulb. We were primarily interested in the low-pressure region, but some experiments were performed at pressures up to 1 atm. We found a peculiar pressure dependency which was explained on the basis that the rate of oxidation was proportional to the pressure at all pressures, but that with increasing pressure an increasing fraction of the volatilizing oxide was back-reflected to the ribbon by the surrounding gas molecules. The oxide molecules are not stable at the temperature of the platinum and are decomposed on impact, the platinum being re-deposited on the specimen. Because of the limitations of space, this explanation was offered summarily without detailed support. Recently, Jaffee and associates3, 4 have suggested that the pressure dependency of our data up to 0.5 torr could be explained on the basis of a Langmuir-type adsorption of molecular oxygen followed by dissociation. Since the correct explanation of the effect of pressure on the oxidation rate is a necessary requirement to the development of the basic mechanism of the oxidation reaction, we felt that the back-reflection theory should be presented in more detail. This is the object of the present paper. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A typical set of results showing the pressure dependency of the oxidation reaction is presented in Fig. 1, where we have plotted, on logarithmic scales, the rate of oxidation, R, vs the pressure, p. For comparison some results of Krier and Jaffee4 and of Raub and plate5 are also shown. These data were taken at atmospheric pressure using furnaces. THE measurements on the formation of multi-layered scales on pure iron1 and the metal -lographic examination of the produced layer of FeO, Fe,O,, and Fe2O3 shown in micrographs2 throw much interesting light on this apparently well-known subject. Professor Paidassi announced2 that in a few months7 time further results are going to be published with regard to the growth of Fe2O3 and Fe2O3 layers on an Armco iron as a function of temperature. Because of the very thin layers of Fe2O3 which are shown by Paidassi (Fig. 10 of ref. 2) when samples were scaled in air at 700°C for 4 hr and because this is not in agreement with the present author's previous observations, the following experiment was recently carried out. Polished cylindrical samples 13/64 in. in diam and 1/4 in. long from electrolytic iron used for spectro-graphic work (Hilger, H.S. Iron rods, F.693) and an Armco iron sample 1/4 in. in diam of the same length were suspended in a muffle furnace on Nichrome wire and annealed in air for 4 hr at 700°C 5OC. Because of the known easy peeling off of the Fe2O3 layer which is mainly in the form of powder (purple red dust on the surface) the samples were protected against any draft and shock. Copper cementation was studied from both thermodynamic and kinetic aspects. The temperature effect of copper cementation, which has been recognized as an anomalous result, and the rate enhancement phenomenon observed after the initial linear step are, in particular, focused in this work. The main results obtained are as follows; 1) Free energy changes of copper cementation reactions, calculated by the use of the "Correspondence Principle" of Criss and Cobble are rather insensitive to temperature. 2) A Flow-cell assembly consisting of a special cupric ion electrode, a calomel electrode and a potentiometer is particularly useful for the continuous measurements of copper cementation rate. 3) Two first-order reaction rate constants for the CU2+- Fe system were successfully determined by the use of the flow-cell assembly. 4) Activation energies determined for the initial rate and the 9 maximum rate of CU2+ - Fe system are both 4.6 kcal/mole. This fact suggests that the mechanisms of the initial reaction and the final reaction are essentially the same and both reactions are rate controlled by the diffusion in a boundary layer. The difference in the rate constants of them may fie explained by the effect of the nature of surface deposits. 5) Qualitative explanation of the rate enhancement phenomenon from the initial rate was successfully made by applying Bockris "Penetration Model."

TO phase of the Ti-0 system has the structure of NaCl and has a wide range of solid solubility.' In the course of studying the Ti-Cr-0 ternary system, binary alloys were made of iodide titanium and high purity TiO,. It was found from X-ray studies of the binary alloys that a transformation of the TiO appears to take place at a temperature near 925°C. Evidence of this phase change is best seen in Fig. 1. Fig. 1A shows the X-ray spectrometer pattern (CUKa radiation) of an alloy of 25 wt pct 0 corresponding to the stoichiometric composition of TiO.

The income of the Institute is derived mainly from dues, advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources fortunately are supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for special purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Charles Hayden Memorial Fund, designated to further the education of Student Associates, the Rocky Mountain Fund, and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing, committee, of which H. T. Hamilton is chairman, and of which the other members are: W. H. Aldridge, George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, Henry Krumb and J. V. W. Reynders. This committee feels that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of ever-growing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light by the committee.

REACTIVE metals are not only those sufficiently radioactive to be used as fuels, such as uranium and thorium, but all metals that will find application in power reactors. It is required of such metals that they be relatively inert or chemically unreactive, dimensionally stable at high temperatures and pressures, and either very absorbent of radioactivity or transparent to it. To gain the right perspective concerning these metals it is necessary at this point to explode some erroneous concepts propounded so often they have become accepted as fact. The first of these is that the great industrial nations, especially the U. S., have reached their pre-eminent position chiefly because they possess abundant mineral resources. Some U. S. mineral economists, echoed by the politicians, have taken this position so often that many of their theories and policies are based on the presence of developed mineral resources as a sine qua non to the country's greatness. Actually the reverse is true- under a social and political system granting free rein to the initiative and creativeness of its people, many hidden mineral resources that otherwise would have lain fallow have been developed into productive enterprises to the benefit of the national industrial economy. Again, once the proper incentive was furnished, other countries have also been able to establish valuable mineral enterprises in recent years; resources long dormant for lack of a proper economic environment suddenly have become valuable and productive. It is possible to name immediately several nations where such domestic economic developments have had favorable repercussions within the last decade. The absence of productive mines in any country is no indication that workable deposits do not exist within its territory.

Some uranium minerals are paramagnetic and hence are amenable to concentration by high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS). This paper describes effects of the HGMS parameters-pulp velocity, field strength, matrix loading, and magnetic field gradient-on the product recovery and grade. Unsatisfactory separation of uranium minerals by HGMS is related to ore-specific properties, such as lack of liberation, fine dissemination of uranium minerals, uniform distribution of magnetic minerals throughout the ore matrix, and interference of fine-sized slimes. Experimental techniques to identify and resolve some of these problems are outlined.

The coal industry in Alabama, centered in Birmingham, has pioneered coal-bene-ficiation practice in the United States. The nature of the coal seams and mining methods employed have necessitated use of equipment and methods best adapted to the local conditions. Although all of the 30 or more coal seams now being mined in the state receive beneficiation, only the three most important producers of coking coals, the Pratt, Mary Lee and Black Creek, are discussed in detail. Nature of the seams, washability characteristics and equipment used are given as examples of the extent of work and progress in this field. The coal seams in Alabama are relatively thin and pitching, making mining difficult and expensive. Most of them are characterized by thin partings of rock or shale in the seam itself, as well as laminations of bone and rash. Mechanical mining methods have increased the occlusions from roof and floor to such an extent that nearly all the coal mined in the state must receive some treatment before it can be put on the market. During the year ending Sept. 30, 1943,' 18,129,792 tons of coal were mined in the state and 14,364,177 tons, or 79.2 per cent, received treatment. Excluding from the total the 1,223,014 tons produced by small wagon mines and the hand-picked lump coal, the amount re- ceiving beneficiation would be more than 90.00 per cent. This is, by far, greater than in any other coal-producing state. The earliest record of coal beneficiation in Alabama was the installation in 1890 of an experimental Lurig washer by Alexander Cunningham, for the Sloss Iron and Steel Co. at its blast furnace in Birmingham.2 In 1894 the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. introduced the English Robinson washer, a combination of a hydraulic classifier and centrifugal machine. Erskine Ramsay, who has contributed so much to the coal industry, saw its possibilities as well as its mechanical defects and soon had his inventive mind at work. He added a sludge tank of his own design, and many Robinson-Ramsay washers were installed in Alabama and other states. The Stewart jig appeared in 1900, followed by the Montgomery jig in 1910 and both have found extensive use. Increased interest in this field led to new designs, such as the American, Elmore, Burke and Faust. The first Baum-type Norton jig was operated in 1930 and within the last five years six large installations of this type have been made by the McNally-Pitts-burg, Jeffrey and Link-Belt Companies. Wet-washing tables were introduced in 1922 but not extensively used until recently. The two most popular types are the Deister-Overstrom and Deister Plat-O. THE National Coal Association held its annual meeting at Cleveland on Nov. 14-16, 1928, having changed the time from the spring to the autumn to avoid conflict with the great number of meetings ordinarily held in the spring. Institute members were \\yell to the fore in its activities, the president, E. C. Mahan (who was reelected for another term!, C. E. Bockus, treasurer, and the secretary, H. L. Gancly, being A. I. M. E. members, as are many of the directors. At the first session, our past president, S. A. Taylor, presented a 1;aper which is reprinted in part herewith. At the Thurs- day session W. D. Brennan presided, Walter Barllum led the discussion on membership, and Otis Mouser led the discussion on taxation. In the afternoon, J. P. Williams, Jr., led the discussion on research. Rembrandt Peale presided at the annual dinner in the evening. At the concluding session on Friday resolutions were adopted, among them one in which the Association "reaffirms its attitude toward proposed Federal legislation affecting the bituminous coal industry by saying that it opposes legislation which would seek to single out this industry for regulatory action. This particularly applies to such bills as S4490."

The simultaneous adsorption of water and hydrocarbon vapor from natural gas by three grades of alumina has been studied at atmospheric pressure and temperature. Results of this investigation reveal that the presence of water vapor in the gas inhibits the adsorption of hydrocarbon vapor, although the presence of the latter does not have a pronounced effect upon the adsorption of water vapor. Adsorption of water-hydrocarbon mixtures from gas is divided into three phases. In the first, both water and hydrocarbon vapor are adsorbed; in the second, adsorption of water vapor proceeds while desorption of hydrocarbon takes place; in the third phase, the adsorbyt approaches complete saturation with respect to both water and hydrocarbon vapors. Both theory and experimental data can be applied to design and operation of commercial dehydration plants, and an illustration is presented. Introduction Dehydration of natural gas becomes increasingly important as the operating pressures employed in gas processing and transmission are increased above 500 ib. per sq. in. Gas produced from high-pressure wells is saturated with water vapor when it leaves the reservoir and it continues into the processing plant or transmission system in a saturated condition because of the substantial decrease in temperature due to expansion at the wellhead. Usually this gas is accompanied by liquid water and hydrocarbons that have condensed with the change in temperature and pressure. Without dehydration, gas temperatures must be held at relatively high levels to prevent solidification of gas hydrates. According to Hammerschmidt's data8 on the relationship of pressure to the freezing point of natural-gas hydrates, the minimum safe operating temperatures range from 55' to go°F. for pressures ranging from 500 to 3000 lb. per sq. in., respectively. Often it is difficult to maintain gas temperatures above the hydrate-freezing temperature because of climatic conditions, unless flow-line heaters are installed. Also, in processing gas for its gasoline content at high pressures, it is desirable to employ operating temperatures lower than the hydrate-freezing point. In distributing high-pressure gas, the large pressure drop from line pressure to town-gate pressure often prbduces sufficient cooling to freeze the regulators and disrupt consumer service. Therefore, it is highly essential to dehydrate high-pressure natural gas if smooth and economical operation is to be maintained at all times. Few published data are available on the simultaneous adsorption of water and hydrocarbon vapors. The effect of impurities on the flowsheet in the smelting and refining circuits for copper, lead and zinc is reviewed and the interflow of by-poduct metals from copper, lead and zinc plants is pointed out. The principal points of separation of all impurities in the circuits are indicated and the additional steps added to these circuits in order to effect impurity separation me shown. In this day and age, when difficult metallurgy is mentioned, one thinks of the extraction of more refractory or possibly the alkaline earth or rare-earth metals. It is true that the extraction of metals having a high affinity for oxygen and deleterious solubility for that element in the liquid metal, affords some of the most difficult extractive metallurgy problems. I. PRESIDING OFFICER. At all business meetings of the Institute the President, or, in his absence, the First Vice-President, or, in the absence of both of them, any other Vice-President or Director, chosen by the meeting, shall preside. At all other meetings of the Institute the President, or, in his absence, one of the Vice-presidents, shall preside. If none of these be present the meeting shall elect a Chairman. The President shall do and perform such other duties as may from time to time be assigned to him by resolution of the Board of Directors of the Institute. II. ORDER OF BUSINESS. At each business meeting of the Institute the order of business shall be as follows: 1. Reading of minutes of preceding meeting. 2. Report of the President. 3. Report of the Treasurer. 4. Report of the Secretary. 5. Election of Directors. 6. Reports of Standing Committees. 7. Reports of Special Committees. 8. Special Orders. 9. Miscellaneous business. This order of business may be changed at any meeting, by a vote of a majority of the Members and Associates present. At all sessions of the Institute, other than business meetings, the order of proceedings and the time of adjournment shall rest in the discretion of the presiding officer. III. SECRETARY OF THE INSTITUTE. The Secretary shall keep a record of the proceedings of all the meetings of the Institute. He shall be custodian of the corporate seal, of the minute books and of all the legal documents belonging to the Institute. He shall have charge on behalf of the Institute of all correspondence. He shall notify all Officers and Directors and all members of committees of their election and appointment; shall issue notices of all meetings of the Board, and of the annual and other business meetings of the Institute; and shall, in calling special meetings of the Directors, specify the objects of such meetings. He shall act as clerk at all the meetings of the Board of Directors and at all meetings of the Institute. The Secretary shall be custodian of all technical or scientific papers submitted to the Institute for its consideration and shall have general charge and supervision of the editing and proof-reading of all material published by the Institute, and of the distribution thereof. THE petroleum industry in Indiana made no extraordinary progress during the year 1924. The surplus stock of crude, brought about by the production of 732,407,000 bbl. in the United States in 1923, as against a production of 557,531,000 bbl. in 1922, had its effect on prices though there were slight advances. These advances were more than offset by the continued high prices of labor and materials. TRENTON OIL DEVELOPMENT The principal development of the year occurred in the Hotmire pool of the Ridgeville district in northeastern Indiana. This pool lies partly in the southern part of Jay County and partly in the northern part of Randolph County. The oil is obtained from the upper horizon of the Trenton. During the past year, about 30 wells were drilled, 21 of which were productive. An attempt to extend the Hotmire pool to the northeast resulted in the discovery of a gas-producing area near the center of Pike township in Jay County; 10 wells have been drilled 4 of which produced oil. The Harvey Orr No. 1 produced 900,000 cu. ft. of gas per day.

Two series of 17pct Cr iron-base alloys with small, controlled amounts of carbon and nitrogen were vacuum-melted in an effort to detertmine the meclz-uniswls of inter granulur corrosion in ferritic stain-less steels. An alloy containing 0.0095 pct N aid 0.002 pct C was very resistant to intergranular corrosion, even after sensitizing heat treatments at 1700" to 2100o F. However, alloys containing more than 0.022 pct Ni and more than 0.012 pct C were quite susceptible to intergranular corrosion after sensitizing heat treatments at temperatures higher than 1700°F. This corrosion was observed after the usual exposure tests and after potentiostatic polarization tests. Electronmicroscopic examination of the alloys susceptible to intergranular corvosion revealed a small grain boundary precipitate; this precipitate was absent in the alloys not susceptible to such corrosion. Thc electronmicrographs indicate that intergranu1ar corrosion of ferritic stainless steels is caused by the depletion of chromium in areas adjacent to precipi-tates of chromium carbide or chromium nitride. It also seems likely that the precipitates themselves are attacked at highly oxidizing potentials. Confirma-tion of the proposed mechanisms was obtained in tests on air-melted ferritic stainless steels containing titanium. The titanium additions greatly reduced susceptibility to intergranular corrosion at moderately oxidizing potentials but had no beneficial effect at highly oxidizing potentials. A major obstacle to the use of ferritic stainless steel has been their susceptibility to intergranular corrosion after welding or improper heat treatment. It appears that sensitization of ferritic stainless steel occurs under a wider range of conditions than for austenitic steels. In addition, a greater number of environments lead to damaging intergranular corrosion of sensitized ferritic stainless steels than to sensitized austenitic steels. The chromium depletion theory of intergranular corrosion is widely accepted for austenitic stainless steels'" although there: are some objections.3 On the other hand, several alternative mechanisms proposed for ferritic stainless steels include precipitation of easily corroded iron carbides at grain boundaries,' grain boundary precipitates that strain the metal lat-tice,5 and the formation of austenite at the grain bound-arie.6 The application of the chromium depletion theory to ferritic stainless steels has been discussed extensively by Baumel.7 The present investigation was undertaken to determine which of the proposed mechanisms can be sub- A PAUL BOND IS Research Group Leader, Climax Molybdenum Co of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich. stantiated with experimental data obtained on ferritic stainless steels. High-purity 17 pct Cr alloys containing small controlled additions of carbon or nitrogen were therefore prepared, and then examined electro-chemically and metallographically. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. Two series of experimental alloys were prepared from electrolytic iron and low-carbon ferro-chromium using the split-heat technique. In this technique, the base composition is melted, and part of the melt is poured off to produce an ingot. To the balance of the melt, the required addition is made and the next ingot cast. This process is repeated until a series of the desired compositions is cast. By this procedure the impurity levels are essentially constant within each series. All the alloys in the carbon-containing series were melted and cast in vacuum. The base composition in the nitrogen series was melted and cast in vacuum; subsequent ingots in the series were melted with additions of high-nitrogen ferrochromium, and cast under argon at a pressure of 0.5 atmosphere. Two additional alloys were produced starting with normal purity materials. They were induction-melted while protected by an argon blanket and cast in air. Table I gives the composition of the alloys. The 2-in.-diam ingots produced were hot-forged and hot-rolled to a thickness of 0.3 in. and then cold-rolled to 0.15 in. All specimens were annealed at 1450°F for 1 hr. The indicated sensitizing heat treat-s s ments were performed on annealed material. All heat treatments were followed by a water quench. Specimen Preparation. For the 65 pct nitric acid test, 1 by 2 by 0.14-in. specimens were wet-surface ground to remove surface irregularities and polished through 3/0 dry metallographic paper. For the modified Strauss test, $ by 3 by 0.14-in. specinlens were similarly prepared. Immediately prior to testing, the Table I.
