The specific effect of various rare-earth metals on the room- and elevated-temperature properties of magnesium has been evaluated. Alloys containing didymium exhibit the highest tensile and compressive strengths at room and elevated temperatures. All the rare-earth metals increase the creep resistance of extruded magnesium at temperatures in the range of 400° to 600°F, but the degree of enhancement depends on the temperature and on the concentration of the added metal. THE effects of rare-earth metals on the properties of sand-cast magnesium were discussed in some detail in earlier paper by the author.' The present paper deals with the effect of the same alloying elements on the properties of extruded magnesium. This investigation also had as its aim the development of a wrought alloy having a better combination of room-temperature strength and ductility and elevated-temperature strength and creep resistance than is found in magnesium-Mischmetal-manganese alloys, which have been reported earlier.2-5 The only known attempt to study wrought magnesium alloys containing pure cerium instead of Mischmetal was made by Mellor and Ridley.6 They found that in the form of rolled bars there is a definite, optimum cerium content for creep resistance at 200 °C and that the creep resistance of these alloys at 200 °C is significantly Improved by heat treatment at 550" to 580"C. In the present investigation the compositional variation in mechanical properties of the following alloy systems is presented: I—magnesium-Misch-metal. 2—magnesium-cerium-free Mischmetal. 3— magnesium-didymium. 4—magnesium-cerium. 5— magnesium-lanthanum. Alloys containing predominately praseodymium are not included in this series because of the lack of this material. Experimental Procedures The alloying ingredients used in preparing the alloys described herein are the same as those reported in the earlier paper.' Cerium-free Mischmetal is the rare-earth mixture remaining when the cerium is removed from Mischmetal, which contains all the rare-earth metals as they occur naturally in mon-azite sand, the ore from which Mischmetal is produced. Removal of both cerium and lanthanum from Mischmetal leaves what is commonly called "didym-ium," consisting predominantly of neodymium and praseodymium. Although the composition of the particular batch of each metal used may differ somewhat from the analysis presented previously, these differences are not great enough to warrant repeat- ing the specific composition of each material. The electrolytic magnesium used as the starting material in these alloys has the same typical analysis as that given in the earlier paper.' The alloys were prepared in small laboratory melts applying all the necessary precautions for alloying rare-earth metals with magnesium described by Marande.' Most melts were large enough to cast one 3 in. diam billet 10 in. long. In a few cases, particularly the didymium-containing alloys, the lack of sufficient amounts of the rare-earth metal limited the size of the billet to 6 to 8 in. All billets were scalped to a diameter of 2 15/16 in. and faced to a length of 9 ¼ in. as limited by the size of the extrusion container. The alloys were extruded into ½ in. diam rod on a 500-ton direct-extrusion press using a 3 in. container. The details of the extrusion step are: billet preheat, 925°F (2 hr); container temperature, 900°F; die temperature, 900°F; extrusion speed, 10 ft per min; reduction ratio, 36:1; and percent reduction, 97.3. The lower melting point of alloys containing didymium' necessitated reduction of the extrusion speed to 5 ft per min in order to prevent hot shorting during extrusion. Adequate lengths were cropped from both ends of each extruded rod to assure that all the material used for tests was extruded under uniform conditions. Tensile and compressive properties at room temperature are reported in the several conditions of heat treatment. The ASTM designations are used to distinguish these conditions as follows: T5—Direct age at 400°F (16 hr) T4—Heat treat at 950°F (4 hr) for alloys containing didymium T4—Heat treat at 1050°F (4 hr) for all other alloys T6—T4 + age at 400 °F (16 hr) The lower heat-treating temperature for alloys containing didymium is necessitated by the lower melting point of these alloys. All heat treatments were conducted in electrically heated, circulating-air furnaces. A protective atmosphere containing 0.5 to 1.0 pct sulphur dioxide was used for the high temperature heat treatments. Tension and creep specimens 6 Yz in. long and compression specimens 1½ in. long were cut from the extruded rod. This paper deals with the Asarco method for the determination of equipment availability. It is apparent that no single availability equation will provide all of the information necessary for the complete record of equipment availability. In the Asarco system, three separate availability records are carried on major equipment. The first is mechanical availability, the second is operational availability, and the third is a historical record of equipment use. The derivation of the three items and the definitions of the time elements used in the various availability equations are presented and discussed. The Mission unit of American Smelting and Refining Co. is located in Pima County, Ariz., approximately twenty miles southwest of Tucson. The unit consists of an open pit copper mine and concentrator. The concentrate is shipped by rail to company smelters at Hayden, Ariz., or El Paso, Tex. Mine stripping began at Mission in the fall of 1959, and construction of the 15,000 tpd concentrator was started in the spring of 1960. The first ore was treated in midsummer of 1961 and full ore production was reached in August 1961. At that time over 46 million tons of material had been moved from the pit. Current production (ore and waste) averages over 100,000 tpd. Total production to date (ore and waste) is over 120 million tons. Rock mechanics, like all engineering disciplines, must have a theoretical foundation. The subject of this chapter is the formulation of analytical methods that may aid in the rational design and determination of the stability of engineering structures in competent brittle rock materials. By an engineering structure in rock, we mean any (1) excavated sub- surface opening, (2) open surface structure, or (3) system of openings in rock that is virtually self-supporting-that is, not requiring artificial systems to carry structural stresses.

The effect of low pressures on the flow and fracture behavior of molybdenum is described. For poly crystalline samples, room-temperature tensile tests indicate greater ductility under 10 Torr than under intermediate pressures up to and including atmospheric pressure (760 Torr). In addition, tests conducted at 760 Torr under atmospheres of air, dry nitrogen, and purified argon exhibited no apparent difference in mechanical properties. Critical tests involving baking in situ as well as those involving single-crystal deformation further imply that the ductility effect is a pressure-dependent phenomenon related only to the fracture process. This dependency is discussed in terms of adsorption and diffusion contributions. THE effect of very low pressures on material properties has heretofore been presumed to be important only for substances possessing relatively high vapor pressures at ambient temperatures. Research has therefore been concentrated primarily on organic solids and liquids, and in some instances on metals such as zinc and cadmium. Most vacuum-effect studies' on the mechanical behavior of metals have been performed under conditions of either cyclic loading or creep rupture at elevated temperatures, i.e., over extended time periods. These studies were not restricted to high vapor pressure materials but also encompassed such metals as gold, copper, and nickel. Very little concern, however, was placed upon the importance of a vacuum environment on the mechanical behavior of metals subjected to a simple unidirectional deformation at ambient temperatures. A tension test is generally of short duration as compared to a creep test, and at room temperature vacuum effects if any would be expected to be surface-limited. In early 1963, Kramer and podlaseck2 reported a change in the bulk flow behavior of aluminum single crystals during room-temperature tension tests. The deformations were performed under pressure conditions of 760 to 3.4 X 10-8 Torr and indicated for the first time a vacuum surface effect contributing to the bulk tensile behavior of metal specimens. As a consequence, an experimental program was initiated in this Laboratory to study the effects of ultrahigh-vacuum conditions on the mechanical behavior of metals. The results of a preliminary study on poly-crystalline molybdenum3 revealed, unlike Kramer's observations of changes in the stress-strain behavior, only an increased ductility under ultrahigh vacuum. Flow behaviors were nearly identical for all tests re- gardless of pressure. This paper presents comprehensive results obtained in this area of research. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three material categories were used in this study: sintered and are-cast polycrystalline molybdenum of nominal purity 99.93+ pct and single-pass electron-beam zone-refined molybdenum single crystals having a nominal purity level of 99.99+ pct. The interstitial levels (weight percent) as determined by the Materials Testing Laboratories, Division of Magnaflux Corp., were as follows: sintered molybdenum (C— 0.005, H—0.0004, O—0.015, N—0.008); and arc-cast molybdenum (C-0.0038, H-0.0003, O-0.015, N-0.023). Single-crystal molybdenum obtained from Materials Research Corp. had a typical interstitial analysis of C-0.0015, H-0.00007, O—0.00045, and N-0.0001. Tensile specimens having a 5 mm diam by 50.8 mm length were prepared from these materials. An average grain diameter of 0.059 mm was obtained for the sintered specimens following a 4-hr, 1600°C heat treatment. Grain sizes from 0.019 to 0.149 mm were obtained in the arc-cast specimens following heat treatments from 1100° to 1600°C for 1 hr. This series of specimens was used exclusively for the grain-size effect studies. All samples were electrolytically polished in 97 pct sulfuric acid solution prior to testing. Experiments were performed at room temperature in an ion-pumped ultrahigh-vacuum system positioned in an Instron tensile machine, Fig. 1. A constant strain rate of 4.2 x 10-4 sec-1 as derived from crosshead displacement was assumed for the deformations. Starting vacuums ranged from 2 to 0.5 X 10-10 Torr. When commercial silicon iron sheets of varying magnetic quality are isothermally annealed at high temperatures, extremely large grains develop in the material having good magnetic properties. These grains are of the (110) [001] orientation and are formed by secondary recrystallization. The primary driving force for this secondary recrystallization is grain boundary free energy. For the secondary grains, activation energies of 103 kcal per mole for nucleation, and of 75.5 kcal per mole for growth, were obtained. The activation energy for nucleation of the secondary grains is consistent with a model involving redistribution of a precipitate acting as the primary grain growth inhibitor. SINGLY oriented silicon iron sheet was first produced in 1935.1 The material as commercially produced today has a very highly developed preferred orientation or texture; up to 95 pct of the grains are crystallographically oriented with their (110) planes in the plane of the sheet and their [loo] directions parallel to the rolling direction. This texture, usually written as (110) [00l], is referred to as the "GOSS" or the "cube-on-edge" texture. Because the magnetic properties of this material are superior to those of the nonoriented sheets in the direction of rolling, the oriented silicon iron has acquired tremendous industrial importance especially in the manufacture of transformer cores and other electrical equipment. The commercially produced material is essentially an iron-silicon alloy containing about 3 1/4 pct Si with minor impurities totaling less than 0.15 pct. The silicon steel heat is melted in the open hearth or electric furnace. The ingots are hot rolled, with or without being slabbed, to strips of 0.100 to 0.080 in. thickness. They are then cold reduced to an intermediate thickness, recrystallized, cold reduced to final thickness, decarburized, and finally annealed at a high temperature. During this high-temperature anneal, extremely large grains with the cube-on-edge texture are produced in the sheet. Several papers have appeared in the literature2-10 relating to the production of the Goss-textured material. Most of these describe the textures produced on cold rolling and on subsequent annealing of single crystal or polycrystalline silicon iron. May and Turnbull11,12 have recently shown the necessity of a second-phase dispersed impurity in the material for the production of the Goss texture. However, none of these papers describes in detail the nucleation and growth kinetics of the (110) [001] grains during the final high-temperature anneal.* The present work, therefore, is an attempt to understand the nucleation and growth kinetics of the cube-on-edge grains in the silicon iron sheet during the final high-temperature anneal.

The Pao deposits of iron ore are in the State of Bolivar, Venezuela, near Upata, about 30 miles south of the Orinoco River and 90 miles east of Ciudad Bolivar. They were discovered 4 or 5 years ago and have not yet been developed to the stage of mining. In March-April, 1929, the writer devoted a week to the examination of these deposits. The maps, drill records and chemical analyses presented herewith were derived from original sources, and the field photographs were made by the writer. The petrographic and metallographic data are from notes by C. S. Ross and M. N. Short, of the U. S. Geological Survey, who have kindly collaborated in these special phases of the study. The Iron Obebodies Topography and Accessibility The deposits are in a region of low mountains representing northern outliers of the Guayanan Highlands. These mountains reach altitudes of 1800 to more than 2000 ft. above sea level, as determined by aneroid barometer. The iron ore is found on mountain crests that reach altitudes of 1915 to 1930 ft., and may be followed down precipitous slopes for 200 • to 300 ft. or more. The greatest vertical range in outcrop is nearly 400 ft., and drilling has indicated that the ore extends to this depth below the surface in one place, at least. The superior hardness of the iron ore accounts for the preservation of the local mountain crests with the intermediate valleys eroded in softer granitic rock. The deposits of iron ore are reached by a private road for automobiles branching northeast from the Ciudad Bolivar-Upata road, a distance of about 12 miles. This road was used in 1928-29 by trucks for transportation of food and camp supplies, gasoline, drilling equipment, etc., but was not suitable for the transportation of iron ore. Between Ciudad Bolivar and the iron-ore area the western two-thirds of the automobile road passes through nearly level, open country known as the savanna, largely used for grazing cattle. This paper describes a comprehensive geomechanics case study of a full¬scale test stope at the Carr Fork Mine. The mine is owned by Anaconda Miner¬als Company and is located near Tooele, Utah. Large diameter blast holes were used in a new method known as blast hole post-fill (BHPF). The new design proved highly successful in contrast with earlier experience with vertical crater retreat (VCR) stopes. The main geomechanics objective was the estab¬lishment of a design procedure for optimizing stope and pillar dimensions with respect to productivity and recovery. An integrated three-part approach consisting of mine measurements, laboratory testing and finite element calcu¬lations was taken. Independent correlations of 0.88 and 0.89 between calculated and measured displacements and between estimated and observed yield :ones substantiate the finite element design approach using UTAH-II. Subse¬quent stope and pillar design analyses indicate that doubling of the original stope width at 50% extraction is quite possible without sacrifice of safety or stability.

A description is given of the development of a process for making low sulphur steel on furnaces fired with 2 1/2 pet sulphur oil. Slag and metal are analyzed at melt. Slag weight is estimated. A simple method for calculating necessary lime additions for making 0.025 and 0.035 pct sulphur steel is given. DURING the last 15 years John Summers & Sons have been confronted increasingly by the problem of producing a low sulphur steel from high sulphur materials. The principles adopted, the processes used, the data collected on a furnace specially set aside to study this problem, and speculation on future developments are dealt with in this paper. This study is limited to two melting shops which make sheet steel only, of the following analysis: C, 0.06 pct; Mn, 0.33; S, 0.04, 0.035, 0.03, and 0.025; and P, 0.02 and 0.015. All the processes described have reference to the manufacturing of this steel and are not necessarily applicable, without modification, to other steels. The raw materials used are given in Table I. Development of Process About 1934, Schenck's work on phosphorus was applied to frame quantitative rules for the removal of phosphorus, with great success. We could however, neither in our own work nor in the voluminous literature, find any assistance to frame quantitative furnace rules to remove sulphur. Perhaps, we should have persevered with Schenck's outstanding chapter on sulphur in The Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking, but we missed the importance of one (Ss) sentence on p. 478. "Evidently this ratio -------- is [S] the important quantity to be considered from the point of view of chemical reaction; it is clear that the sulphur content of the steel alone, as frequently given in the literature cannot suffice for judging the success of the reaction unless special details are given regarding the sulphur charge and the amount of slag."' We were not however very successful in getting values for Schenck's "n" that agreed with (S) arrived at by our direct analysis. [S] In addition to Schenck's work much attention was given to V value. The formula selected for V was: (SCaO) — 1.57 (2 P2O5) (S SiO2) After plotting many charges a curve was obtained, based upon the relationship between the percentage sulphur in the finished steel and V value, Fig. 1. For a long time this was used as standard with about a 60 to 70 pct success on producer-gas fired furnaces, if all uprising scrap was used and no bought scrap used. An inspection of this curve shows clearly that it is not a quantitative manufacturing process, and that it was not sure enough to go to the trouble and expense of doing stage analysis for P,O,,

AT the annual meeting of this Institute held two years ago a new method, of estimating the grindability of coal was described, based on experimental work carried on by the Bureau of Mines at its Northwest Experiment Station. Since that time, several organizations concerned with the testing or utilization of coal as pulverized fuel have adopted and used the method in determining the grindability of several hundred samples of coal. In addition, a series of comparative tests of this method and three others has been carried out in five laboratories under the auspices of Committee D-5 of the American Society for Testing Materials. As a result the Committee has recommended that the Bureau of Mines method, designated as the "ball-mill method," and the Hardgrove method2, previously advanced, be accepted as tentative standards3. Since the ball-mill method was originally developed and published, an opportunity has been presented to apply it to a larger number of coals and to study intensively some of the principles upon which the method is based. This paper presents a resume of these further studies and includes a comparison with the Hardgrove-machine method. Trial runs were also made with another procedure recently proposed-the C.I.T. roll-test method4.

The trend in both the metallic and nonmetallic mining industry is toward processing increasingly higher tonnages of lower grade ores, thereby resulting in a growing interest in progressively larger volume individual machines in the flotation circuit. Because of the relatively high cost of large flotation machine development and evaluation, it is important to establish a rational basis by which the existing smaller flotation machine experience can be extrapolated to establish the configuration of the next larger family of flotation machines with a minimum of development modification in the field. This Paper reviews the R&D approach used in translating smaller flotation machine experience to the configuration of a 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) induced air machine. Internal cell hydrodynamic principles, which governed this extrapolation, and cell (liquid) surface and froth management considerations will be reviewed, and prototype machine mill tests will be summarized.

Broadly speaking, the year 1934, one of the most active in the history of the Coast, has been both disappointing and revealing. Of the 18 new oil-producing areas, only two have shown the qualities of a first class oil field. Many of the new areas are discouraging for the horizons exploited, because of close association of gas and salt water, and the absence of any appreciable oil zone. In spite of amply fulfilling the expectations of drilling and geophysical development, the year has fallen far short of the results that normally should be expected from such a campaign. In 1934, the Cockfield zone has been disappointing because its exploration down the dip from the Conroe and Tom Ball fields revealed only such distillate fields as Splendora, Eureka, and the great gas-sand thickness at Katy. The zone proved good at Raccoon Bend. Newer Oligocene and Frio fields in Texas, with the exception of Hastings, were also disappointing, as Van Vleck arid Old Ocean attest. The discovery at Dickinson is not startling. The development of Hastings, Tom Ball, Dickinson and the deep zone at Raccoon Bend will be slow. A new strip of prospective territory of minor importance lying inland from the Conroe trend was opened by the Kittrell discovery. During the year 206 unproductive wildcats were drilled on the Texas Coast, compared with 207 during 1933 and 141 during 1932. During 1934, there were 835 oil and gas wells and 229 dry holes drilled in proved fields, in contrast with 1100 in 1933 and 512 in 1932. The past year's production was actually 60,868,260 bbl., or 2,020,764 bbl. less than in 1933. The present annual rate of Texas Gulf Coast production is about 61 million barrels per year. The daily Texas Coast production decreased 5537 bbl., or 3.2 per cent, during the year. The total daily production at the end of the year was 173,598 bbl. Eighteen wildcats opened up new oil and gas pools during 1934, so that there are now 78 active pools and 3753 producing oil wells. The production of the average well is 45 bbl. per day. The price of crude oil was almost uniform in 1934,

Since production curtailment for other than engineering reasons is gradually disappearing, and more and more wells are now producing at capacity and showing declining production rates, it was considered timely to present a brief review of the development of decline-curve analysis during the past three or four decades. Several of the commoner types of decline curves were discussed in detail and the mathematical relationships between production rate, time, cumulative production and decline percentage for each case were studied. The well-known loss-ratio method was found to be an extremely valuable tool for statistical analysis and extrapolation of various types of curves. A tentative classification of decline curves, based on their loss ratios, was suggested. Some new graphical methods were introduced to facilitate estimation of the future life and the future production of producing properties where curves are plotted on semilogarithmic paper. To facilitate graphical extrapolation of hyperbolic-type decline curves, a series of decline charts was proposed, which will make straight-line extrapolation of both rate-time and rate-cumulative curves possible. Introduction During the period of severe production curtailment, which is now behind us, production-decline curves lost most of their usefulness and popularity in prorated areas because the production rates of all wells, except those in the stripper class, were constant or almost constant. While production-decline curves were thus losing in importance for estimating reserves, an increasing reservoir consciousness and a better understanding of reservoir performance developed among petroleum engineers. This fact, together with intelligent interpretation and use of electric logs, core-analysis data, bottom-hole pressure behavior and physical characteristics of reservoir fluids, eliminated a considerable part of the guesswork in previous volumetric methods and put reserve estimates, based on this method, on a sound scientific basis' At the same time, a number of ingenious substitutes were developed for the regular production-decline curve, which made it possible to obtain an independent check on volumetric estimates in appraisal work, even though the production rates were constant. with the now steadily increasing demand for oil to supply the huge requirements of this global war, proration for reasons of than prevention of underground waste is gradually disappearing. More and more wells are, or will be, producing at capacity or at their optimum rates, as determined by sound engineering practice. With this trend, the character of producing wells seems to regain, more or less, its "individuality," and the old and familiar decline curve appears to have had a comeback as a valuable tool in the hands of the petroleum engineer. It may be timely, therefore, to retrace the development of decline-curve analysis in the past by presenting a brief chronological review of bulletins and papers published during the past three or four decades, which have

Metastable Ag-Cu solid solutions at two compositions beyond the maximum limits of solubility obtainable by quenching from the solid state were obtained by rapid quenching from the liquid state. The process of transformation of the metastable solid solutions into the equilibrium phases was studied by means of X-ray diffraction intensity measurements and electrical-resistance measurements; metallographic examination was also performed. Results are compared with those for an alloy quenched from the solid state at a composition which exists as a solid solution at elevated temperatures. Activation energies for the trans-formation were computed to be 33,600 * 2500 and 33,100 * 2000 cal per g mole for the 60.1 and 75.0 at. pct Ag;Cu compositions, respectively THE kinetics of precipitation in supersaturated solid solutions obtained by quenching from high temperature has been thoroughly studied in many alloys, and detailed investigations of the early stages of nucleation and subsequent growth of the equilibrium phases have been carried out. All of these studies have been made on alloys quenched from the solid state, however, and it is the purpose of this paper to present some of the results on the kinetics of transformation of metastable solid solutions in Ag-Cu binary alloys whose compositions lie outside of the solid-state limits of solubility. Limits of solubility in the solid state can be increased by rapid quenching from the liquid state. This was first demonstrated by Falkenhagen and Hofmann, who obtained appreciable increases in solubility limits of the elements of the first transition series in aluminum by rapid cooling of liquid alloys through contact with a copper mold maintained at liquid nitrogen temperature.' The same basic idea of cooling a liquid alloy by conduction onto a substrate rather than by convection of a gas or liquid (conventional quenching) has been recently revived and extended to very high rates of cooling by Duwez and his collaborators. The new technique was first applied to Ag-Cu alloys because the existence of a eutectic in this system is not predicted by the Hume-Rothery rules of alloy phase formation. Rapid quenching from the liquid state resulted in metastable solid solutions at all concentrations. The kinetics of decomposition of these metastable solid solutions containing 60.1 at. pct Ag;Cu (eutectic composition) and 75.0 at. pct Ag;Cu is the subject of the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Alloys were made in 10- to 20-g heats using silver of purity 99.99 pet and copper of purity >99.999 pct. Components were weighed accurately to 0.1 mg and melted by induction heating in an alumina crucible under an atmosphere of hydrogen. Weight losses amounted to less than 0.02 ~ct in all cases. Rapid cooling from the liquid state was achieved in an apparatus of the type described by Pietrokowsky. 3 In this technique a freely falling drop of molten alloy is caught between a stationary anvil and a fast moving piston, both anvil and piston being lined with copper. The resulting foils were approximately circular (about 2 cm in diam) and from about 50 to 150 u in thickness, depending on the pressure driving the piston. Metallographic samples were prepared for polishing by edge-mounting foils in Quickmount. The mostef-fective etching procedure was found to be: 10 parts NH4OH (concentrated), 1 part H2O2 (30 pct), 5 parts H2O, swab for 5 to 10 sec. The transformation of the metastable alloys to equilibrium was followed by X-ray diffraction and electrical-resistivity measurements. The peak intensity and the integrated intensity of suitable Bragg reflections of the metastable and stable solid solutions were studied with a Norelco dif-fractometer, using nickel-filtered copper KO radiation. The peaks were step-scanned at intervals of 0.05 deg. Using either a Kelvin bridge or a null circuit with a Leeds and Northrup K-2 potentiometer, the changes in electrical resistance due to phase transformation were measured for specimens cut into strips about 20 mm long and 4 mm wide. All resistivity measurements were carried out at liquid-nitrogen temperature. The isothermal heat treatment was accomplished by sealing the samples in argon-filled aluminum containers with stainless-steel O-rings. The morpho1ogies and orientation relationships of the phases in the Sn-Zn and A1-A13Ni eutectic systems were examined by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. In each alloy the "transition" from the lamellar to the fibrous morphology was found to be one of scale, not of type. The minor phase in both systems exhibited certain well developed facets which were not affected by changes in the ingot solidification rate. The crystallographic relationships displayed by the pairs of phases in both systems were also insensitive to the growth rate. In the Sn-Zn alloy, the unique relationship of: growth direction - II [1201 Sn - II [01101 Zn and ribbon interface plane 11 (101) Sn 11 (7012) Zn was determined. The Al-Al3Ni alloy phases did not possess any particular orientation relationship, though the Al3Ni phase invariably grew in the [010] direction and exhibited the same set of facet planes. These results are discussed in relation to current eutectic growth theories and explanations of the "lamellar to fibrous transition". THE lamellar to fibrous transition that occurs in many eutectic alloys has been the subject of considerable speculation and experimental study. In some alloys it can be induced solely by an increase in the solidification rate,'-3 whereas in others the transition supposedly occurs only if the lamellae are forced to grow out of the overall ingot growth direction.4-6 he cause of this latter type of transition has been attributed to deviations of the lamellae from their low energy habit planes;4'5'7 fibers are produced because the sustaining force for lamellar growth (a low energy boundary) is destroyed. Implicit in these explanations is the assumption that fibers are circular in cross-section and completely lacking in low energy inter-phase interfaces. The "natural" growth rate dependent transition has been studied less thoroughly although Tiller8 has attempted a theoretical explanation of it. Tiller's arguments are not completely satisfactory9 but his suggestion that the relative undercoolings of the solid/liquid interface for lamellar and fibrous morphologies are growth rate dependent cannot be totally discounted; it is possible, for instance, that the relative interfacial undercoolings could alter and produce the observed morphology change if the orientation relationships between the phases and the associated interphase bound- ary energies were sensitive to growth rate. Salkind et al." have reported finding a change in the orientation relationships in the A1-A13Ni system accompanying the lamellar to fibrous transition, but contradictory evidence has also been reported for this3'" and another system,12 so the position remains unclear. In an attempt to clarify matters a study was made of the "lamellar to fibrous" transition in the Sn-Zn and A1-A13Ni eutectic systems; the morphologies of these two selected systems are quite similar when viewed by optical microscopy. In the present research the morphologies and morphology changes were investigated by electron microscopy. The orientation relationships existing between the eutectic phases were also determined for both morphologies in both eutectic systems. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The materials and method of alloy preparation and ingot solidification for the Sn-Zn system have been reported previously.2 In this investigation nine horizontally grown ingots of the highest purity (99.9997 pct) were used. The temperature gradient in the melt was not intentionally varied and was approximately 10°C per cm. Seven growth rates between 1.3 cm per hr and 20 cm per hr were imposed. The A1-A13Ni alloys were prepared from "Spec. Pure" nickel and 99.995 pct aluminum by melting the components in an open alumina crucible and casting the melt into the cold graphite mold. Six ingots of the Al-Al3Ni alloy were unidirectionally solidified at growth rates from 1 cm per hr to 12 cm per hr under high purity argon. A typical ingot was 20 cm long, 1 cm wide, and 0.75 cm to 1.5 cm thick. Samples taken from the bars at positions 12 cm from the nucleation end were examined by conventional orthogonal-section metallo-graphic techniques. When required, samples were mounted for X-ray diffraction analysis using the Laue back-reflection technique with a finely focussed X-ray source. The surfaces of the A1-A13Ni specimens were prepared by mechanically polishing them down to the 1 µ diamond pad stage followed by an electropolish in 80/20 methanol/perchloric acid solution at 0°C and 20 to 30 v. The Sn-Zn specimens were repeatedly polished on an alumina pad and etched in hot dilute (2 pct) nitric acid until the diffraction spots were found to be sharp. Thin films of the alloys were prepared for observation in an electron microscope by spark machining thin discs (0.03 to 0.04 in. thick) from longitudinal and lateral sections of the bars and elec-trolytically thinning them via a jet polishing technique. For the A1-A13Ni eutectic alloy, an 80/20 mixture of ethanol/perchloric acid at 40 v and 20°C was found to be satisfactory. A solution of 70/20/10 methanol/perchloric acid/butylcellosolve at 25 v and 20°C was used on the Sn-Zn alloy. For the former alloy the jet nozzles (cathodes) and the disc clamps were of aluminum;

For more than 200 years zeolites have been familiar minerals to geologists and mining engineers as minor, but ubiquitous constituents in vugs and fractures of most basalt and traprock formations. More than 35 different species have been recognized including several, such as chabazite, erionite, mordenite, and faujasite, whose adsorption properties rival those of many synthetic molecular sieves. Igneous occurrences of this type have never been mined on a commercial scale; they are generally small and low grade, and they commonly contain as many as four zeolite minerals, along with small quantities of calcite, quartz, and other silicate minerals. Their economic beneficiation to monomineralic zeolite products has also not been achieved and, for the most part, industrial applications of zeolites have relied primarily on synthetic molecular sieves that were crystallized from hydrous aluminosilicate gels. The results of an extensive experimental program relating to the effectiveness of gravel screens have been correlated. The factors considered in some detail include gravel size and condition of packing, sand size and size distribution, fluid velocity, fluid viscosity, and thickness and arrangement of grave! screens. Good agreement between calculated values based upon probability considerations and experimental results relating to the influence of the thickness of the gravel screen was obtained. All of these factors are treated in the correlation in order that their influence may be taken into account in ascertaining the characteristics of an effective gravel screen for a particular set of conditions. The details of the experimental program are not given in the present paper but a description of generalized behavior and typical experimental results are recorded in graphic form. Introduction Gravel screens have been placed in water and oil wells for a number of yearsl,2,3 with the dual objective of increasing the productivity and decreasing the entrance of sand into the well bore. An understanding of the factors controlling the effectiveness of gravel screens in this connection is of industrial interest because it will lead to the proper selection of gravel. Some of the fundamental considerations involved in the migration of sand through a coarser body of porous materials were investigated by Coberly and Wagner4 and further experimental work has been carried out by Gumpertz.5 Apparently the pertinent phenomena are somewhat complex and are influenced by many variables. The present paper deals with the prediction of the behavior of gravel screens under the conditions encountered in practice but does not attempt to discuss the experimental methods or results that were obtained as a background and upon which the prediction is based. Influence OF Gravel Screens upon Productivity The use of a gravel screen may increase the productivity of a well by increasing its effective diameter, and this constitutes one of the objectives of its use. The permeability of most gravels and coarse sands that are employed in practice is so large compared to that of the sand in place that relatively little loss in production rate will arise from the use of material fine enough to cause the desired resistance to sand migration. For example, in Fig. I is depicted the approximate variation in the permeability of closely sized spherical gravels under the conditions of packing likely to be encountered in screens. The dotted lines indicate the variation that might be found because of differences in packing. It should be realized that the permeability is not a single-valued function of the average grain diameter but is related to a large number of factors, including the size, the size distribution and the shapes of the particles. However, Fig. I does permit a rough estimation of the permeability of closely sized spherical gravels and shows that the permeability with even the smaller particles is very large compared to that of most petroleum production horizons.

Plans to bring the Geco Mines property in Manitouwadge, Ont., into production began in 1954. At that time over 12 million tons of copper-zinc ore were indicated in a zone 2700 ft long. A concentrating plant was built to handle 3300 tpd of ore and a production shaft was sunk about 1500 ft. MINE LAYOUT Vertical attitude, width, rake, and competent country rock of a 4-million ton orebody west of the main diabase dike suggested a system of blasthole stopes, undercut with scram drifts connected by a transfer raise system to a crusher on the 1250-ft level and this system was employed. A 42-in. conveyor on this level transfers the ore about 1200 ft to a loading pocket at the No. 1 shaft. The system has a number of advantages: 1) Cost of tramming is eliminated. 2) Rate of extraction from any stope is controlled only by the scraping capacity of the scram. 3) Rate of extraction from the stoping area can be very rapid. Fast extraction makes it possible to cut mining costs for the following reasons: The number of stopes actively producing is kept to an economical minimum; the operating area is concentrated-manpower can be used more effectively; and active life of the stoping block is short, making ground support problems simpler and less costly.
