Because of the many conflicting opinions regarding the functioning of the ball load and the characteristics of ball wear in ball-mill grinding, the following résumé of reports covering recent tests conducted at the Hayden plant of the Kennecott Copper Corporation is submitted with the view of pointing out certain salient features that should throw additional light on the subject. Mills Used Cylindrical drum mills with trunnion feed and discharge were used. The discharge trunnion was 13½ in. in diameter. Dimensions inside the lining were 6 ft. 6 in. in diameter and 9 ft. 6 in. long. The mills were Britannia-lined and nine lifter bars projected 2 in. from the lining. The mill speed was 162/3 r.p.m. Feed to the mill was 9 per cent on 10-mesh, 85 per cent on 100-mesh, 77 per cent solids. New balls measured 2 in. in diameter and the approximate weight of the ball load was 40,000 pounds. Initial Test During a test that was being conducted to determine the relative economic value of standard cast balls vs. forged steel balls in the local 'grinding operation, certain observations were made in regard to the functioning of the various ball sizes and the characteristics of ball wear, which warranted a supplementary test for the purpose of confirming such observations. For the initial test, the necessity for developing a graduated load of the new forged balls before the test could be started was realized, but the time required to obtain a graduated load and the functioning of the various ball sizes was not clear. No advantage could be seen for starting out with a full load of forged balls, as this initial load, at the least, would have to be completely ground out and replaced by daily additions of balls before the graduation could be complete and a normal static condition of ball sizes reached. For a considerable period prior to exhaustion of this initial charge there would be an unusual quantity of worn balls of a certain size, which would not be typical of a normal charge and could influence the characteristics and functioning of the entire load. Therefore, it was decided to start by daily addition of the forged balls to a mill that contained a normal operating load of cast balls. After 88 days of operation the mill was shut down for inspection. By that time the load consisted of a mass of forged balls functioning around a large core of the residual material of the former cast-ball load. This core of cast slugs, locally referred to as "the kidney," was well defined from the forged-ball load.

The effect of hydrogen peroxide (H202) on growth and respiration of Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, organisms involved in acid leaching of copper sulfide minerals and uarnium oxides, was examined. Oxygen uptake and growth by T. thiooxidans were totally inhibited after contact with 0.82 mM H202. Complete inhibition of oxygen uptake by T. ferrooxidans occurred at 8.75 mM H202, and growth was inhibited after 6 hr exposure to 2.06 mM H202. Higher concentration of H202 can be used without detriment to thiobacilli if it is dissipated prior to reaching the oxidation pond or dump surface.

AS a means for increasing the efficiency in modern blast-furnaces by supplying to them blast of a much higher temperature than is now possible, the writer offers as a suggestion a modification in the construction of regenerative hot-blast stoves. Stated briefly, the plan proposed is to pre-heat both the gas and the air for its combustion in a manner similar to that generally adopted in Siemens openhearth furnaces. After thus carrying the temperature of the stove to a point much higher than that common in hot-hlast stoves, the cold blast passes through it. Without entering into the details relating to the reversing valves and the system of flues, the general plan may be outlined as follows, referring to the accompanying drawings: The valves are so placed in heating up the stove that the blast-furnace gas enters at B, Fig. 1, and the cold air for combustion at A. Ascending in flues, F and E, respectively, combustible gas and air meet and mix in the combustion-chamber, I. Flowing through K, they descend through the flues, G and H, escaping through the chimney. In this manner the walls of the combustion. chambers, I and L, are highly heated, and the right-hand side of the stove is carried to a higher temperature. By reversing the valves, blast-furnace gas enters at C and cold air for combustion at D. Both are pre-heated in their ascent through the flues, G and H. They burn in the combustion-chamber, L, and the hot gases of combustion, flowing through K, I, E and F to A and B, heat the left-hand side of the stove. In this manner the stove is carried to a temperature greater than that of those now generally in use, in which air and gas are burned without preliminary pre-heating. In the plan proposed, that side of the stove will, of course, be relatively cooler through which cold air and furnace-gas last passed in its ascent to its combustion-chamber. After having sufficiently heated the stove in the manner outlined, the cold blast is admitted through all the flues, A, B, C and D. By American tradition, if not by rational decision, publicly owned natural resources have been transferred to private industry for processing. The process of transfer requires specific determination of the price which the patentee, buyer, or lessee must pay to the government in exchange for the right to develop a resource, and selection of the patentee, buyer, or lessee from among several possible contestants. Pricing of natural resources owned by the government presents a set of problems quite different from ordinary commodity pricing. Natural resources in situ are not homogeneous commodities. Within any class of natural resources, specific leasable parcels will differ in value by reason of location and accessibility, as well as quality and quantity. Thus, there is no "going price;" every lease within a specific resource class will have a different value. To complicate further the pricing and buyer selection problems, competition may not be reliable. Natural-resource markets are characterized by oligopsony conditions. In a significant number of cases, as will be shown later, there has been only one bidder for a given lease, and in most lease sales the number of bidders is equal to or less than three. As a further complication, there is great uncertainty regarding the value of specific resources, even among the best-informed buyers, as well as within the leasing agency. In some instances, particularly with regard to oil and gas resources, there may be uncertainty about the presence of resources, as well as the quantity and quality of any resources contained in the tract offered for lease. In other cases, such as oil shale and some deep ocean minerals where new technologies are involved, the presence of the resource is clearly established. There may be a relatively high degree of knowledge about the quantity and quality of the resource, but there is great uncertainty concerning the cost of production. These problems in total make it difficult for the leasing agency to appraise accurately the resource to be leased, as well as for the potential bidder to calculate a bid price that will yield him a normal profit. The pricing goal of the federal government as the seller or lessee may be to capture the economic rent; that is, the price of a resource might equal its discounted present value. A required price substantially above this amount would either generate no bids, or, in the long run, would bankrupt the buyer. A price below this amount is a disguised subsidy to the lessee. A subsidy to mineral lessees, as to any other economic interest group, as a minimum should be justified by a clear showing of net external benefits from the economic activity. In the case of timber sales by the U.S. Forest Service, the Forest Service Handbook asserts that "the aim in national forest stumpage appraisal is to determine market value,"8 and "market value" is equated to "fair market value." THE production of non-ferrous secondary metals has become a large and important industry in the United States, and deals with practically every type of manufacturing concern.. Its business is unique in that it generally buys from its customers as well as sells to them, whether they are individuals, cities, corporations, or the United States government. Its operations are of vital importance to the success and prosperity of many of the nation's most important manufacturers; yet there are few industries about which less is generally known by those outside it, whether concerning the magnitude of its operations or the details of its actual technique. The industry itself is to blame for this meager publicity, because its technical men have made few attempts to openly exchange ideas, in spite of the excellent examples set by the iron and-steel or the copper and brass industries. Whether this is due to the ancient shroud of secrecy generally supposed to cover smelting operations, or because its technical men actually felt that the industry was too puny to be interesting, is hard to say. This paper will consider its subject in a 'general way, attempting to show something of the size and importance of the industry, as well as its fitness to do its work well. Attention will be called to the sound economic reasons for the handling of non-ferrous wastes by specialists, and to the often unseen losses of metals and labor which occur when manufacturers reclaim' their own metallic wastes.

A double crucible system was developed for I-g scale plutonium reductions. The equipment consists of an inner MgO crucible, an outer MgO crucible, and a stainless steel pressure vessel. The reduction charge is PIaced in the inner crucible and the annulus between the inner and outer crucibles is filled with a mixture of calcium and iodine. The exothermic reaction between the calcium and iodine in the annulus supplies the heat required for complete reaction of the reduction charge ana' good metal coalescence. Metal yields of 80 to 85 ,pct were obtained from I-g scale reductions and yields as high as 97.5 pct were obtained from 0.5-g scale reductions. The system was used to reduce charges containing as little as 0.1 g of Pu resulting in metal yields up to 90 Pct. THIN metal foils of highly enriched plutonium isotopes are used as targets for cross section and other measurements. The isotopes are separated in the calutrons at Oak Ridge and are very expensive to prepare. Often, only 1 or 2 g of material are available thereby emphasizing the need for a method of preparing these small quantities of metal. Procedures for 1-g scale plutonium reductions have been described, but these procedures require elaborate or expensive equipment. For example, the procedure described by Anselin et al.1 requires an inert atmosphere glovebox and induction heating equipment. The procedure described by Baker2 also uses induction heating equipment to obtain the recommended heating rates and liner temperatures. Baker's procedure also requires high purity PuF4 with very little PuO2 present. The procedure described in this paper resulted from a search for a simple and inexpensive method for making 1-g scale plutonium reductions. EXPERIMENTAL Equipment. The equipment required for the double crucible system consists of a pressure vessel, two MgO crucibles, a MgO crucible lid, and a resistance-heated, vertical crucible furnace. The crucibles were slip cast from high purity MgO and were supplied by the Coors Porcelain Co. and the Norton Co. The pressure vessel and lid were fabricated from 316 stainless steel. Materials. The PuF4 used for this study was obtained from the P1utoniu:m Metal Production Department at Rocky Flats. The PuF4 was prepared in a con- tinuous hydrofluorinator by reacting Pu02 with HF at 650°C. The isotopic composition of the plutonium was approximately 93 pct 239PU, 6 pct 240PU, and 0.5 pct 241PU. Some of this PuF, contained less than 1 pct Pu02 (Batch No. 6 and 7), while other batches contained up to 15 pct Pu02 (Batch No. 3). The chemical analyses of all the PuF4 used for this study is given in Table I. The calcium was 99 pct pure, AEC grade, and only that fraction which would pass through a 20 mesh screen was used. The I2 was USP grade re-sublimed I2 which was ground before being used. Procedure. Various charge compositions and methods for loading the double crucible system were tested. The optimum conditions for 1-g scale reductions are described below. The double crucible system was loaded as shown in Fig. 1. The outer crucible was placed in the pressure vessel and the annulus between them was filled with MgO sand. The inner crucible was placed in the outer crucible, supported by a layer of MgO sand in the bottom of the outer crucible. A mixture of 5.2 g of Ca and 25 g of I2 was placed in the annulas between the two crucibles. The upper portion of the annulas was filled with MgO sand. Next, a layer of a mixture of calcium and I, equal to 20 wt pct of the calcium and I2 used in the main charge was placed in the bottom of the inner crucible. The PuF, to be reduced was mixed with a 30 pct excess of calcium and 1 mole of I2 per mole of Pu and this mixture was placed in the inner crucible. The charge was topped with a layer of a mixture of calcium and I2 equal to 20 wt pct of the calcium and I2 used in the main charge. The pressure vessel was sealed with a flat copper gasket and was purged by alternately evacuating and filling with argon. The purge valve was closed and the vessel was placed in a vertical crucible furnace which was preheated to 950°C. The furnace was turned off after 20 min of heating and the vessel allowed to cool. Experience has shown that. this amount of heating is sufficient to assure complete reaction of the charge. The heats oj- formation at 0°C of the compounds AuSn,, AuSn2, AuSn, and the £ phase were measured in a metal -solution calorimeter with liquid tin or a liquid Sn-Bi alloy as solvent. The melting point, heat of fusion, and heat capacities near the melting point of- the compound AuSn in the solid and liquid state were measured in a constant temperature gradient calorimeter. The free energy and entropy of formation of the compound AuSn at its melting point and at 298 °K were calculated from the experimental results and published data. The heats of formation are discussed in relation to the nature of the compounds. The heat capacity below the melting point, heat of fusion, and entropy of fusion of AuSn are interpreted in terms of processes oc-curring before melting. The atomic arrangement in liquid Au-Sn alloys and the bonding in the intermediate phases of. the Au-Sn system are discussed in the light of the measured thermodynamic properties. THE available thermodynamic information on the intermediate phases in the Au-Sn system consists of the heats of formation of the compounds AuSn4, AuSn2, and AuSnly2 and of one composition of the < phase2 besides values of the heat content of the compound AuSn from 0" to 635".&apos; However, the heats of formation refer to different temperatures ringing from 90" to 450°C. Also, the reported error limits of some of the values are large and several inconsistencies are apparent. In the investigation reported here the heats of formation of the compounds AuS-, AuSnz, and AuSn and of three compositions of the < phase were determined for a single reference temperature of 0°C by liquid metal-solution calorimetry. The compound AuSn, which is the only congruently melting intermediate phase in this system, was further investigated in a constant temperature gradient calorimeter by measuring its heat of fusion, melting point, and heat capacity in the solid and liquid states near the melting point. From these data and published free energies of the liquid of composition Au~n,&apos; the free energies of formation of the compound AuSn at the melting point and at 298°K were calculated. The results shed light on the solid-liquid transition of AuSn and on the atomic bonding and state of association of gold and tin in the solid and liquid phases. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES 1.1) Preparation of Samples. Stoichiometric amounts of gold and tin, each 99.99+ pct pure, were melted in evacuated Vycor capsules (12 mm ID). The melts were maintained approximately 150°C above the liquidus for about 12 hr and shaken repeatedly. Samples of the compound AuSn were cooled slowly to room temperature. Melts of the other phases, all of which solidify by peritectic reactions, were transferred to the narrow end (5 mm ID) of the capsule, which was then quenched into iced brine. The solidified samples were annealed in the unopened capsules for 10 days at 30" to 50° C below the respective solidus temperatures. The absence of microsegregation and second phases was confirmed by metallographic examination. At least two batches of each composition were prepared. 1.2) Solution Calorimetry. The heats of formation were determined by liquid metal-solution calorimetry. In this technique, the difference between the heat effects on dissolution in a liquid metal, or alloy bath, of the compound and a mechanical mixture of its annealed components, adjusted for changes in composition of the bath, is the heat of formation of the compound at the temperature from which the samples are added. Details of the equipment and technique have been described."&apos; A tin bath at 300" or 350°C was used with the compounds AuSn,, AuSnz, and AuSn. The high gold content of the £ phase would have caused it to dissolve with an appreciable exothermic heat effect. In order to achieve thermal compensation, the samples were added from 0°C to a bath at 350°C consisting of 66.2 wt pct Bi (99.999+ pct pure), balance Sn (99.99+ pct pure). This solvent gives thermal compensation because gold dissolves exothermically in tin and endothermically in bismuth. The calorimeter was calibrated by adding from 0°C approximately 0.015 g-atom of the solvent.

Experience has shown how difficult it is to obtain information regarding laboratory-tests in connection with the chlorina-tion-process for the extraction of gold from its ores, and I therefore present the following method, somewhat in detail, for the benefit of those who may desire to pursue research work in this field. The ore chosen was a partly-decomposed porphyry, extremely siliceous and comparatively soft, and of an average value per ton of from $25 to $26 in gold and $0.68 in silver. The chemical analysis gave: Fe,O,, 3.35; FeS, 1.5; MnO,, 0.75; ZuCO,, 4; A1,0,, 3.20; H,O, 0.7 ; SiO, and insol., 83.50 per cent. The ore, first crushed to pass a 5-mesh screen, was coned and quartered until a 45-lb. sample was obtained. Samples for assay and analysis, taken from this lot by means of riffles, were crushed to pass a 100-mesh screen. The original sample was divided into 10-lb. lots, of which one was crushed to pass a 10-mesh screen; another through a 12-; the third through a 20-, and the last through a 30-mesh screen. Because of the production of an excessive quantity of fine material it was deemed inexpedient to crush finer than 30-mesh size—a decision the wisdom of which is proved by the data in Table I., showing the increasing ratio of slimes, in proportion as the ore is crushed finer. In order to determine the percentage of fines in the sizes of mesh selected, a weighed sample of ore was taken from each mesh, and a sample from the 10-mesh lot was passed successively through 20-, 40- and 100-mesh screens, and the percentage remaining on each screen determined. This process was repeated with the 12-, 20- and 30-mesh lots, with the results given in Table I.

This paper presents results on an extension into the realm of high-carbon steels of some work recently published1 on the effects of time at temperature, quenching temperature and prior structure on the hardenability of one 0.20 and four 0.40 per cent carbon alloy steels. It was shown at that time that unless the conditions of time, temperature and prior structure are substantially the same in performing the hardenability test as in conducting hardening of parts in production, the correlation of hardenability information with the hardness and properties of production parts is often not of satisfactory accuracy. The general effects of these variables on the austenitic grain size, distribution of excess carbides and critical cooling rate have been known for many years and one or more have been investigated by Shepherd,2,3 Davenport and Bain,4 Digges,5,6 Digges and Jordan,&apos; Post and associates8 and Roberts and Mehl,9 to mention only a few. There has been no systematic investigation, however, into the quantitative variations produced on the hardenability of commercial high-carbon steels by changes in these factors of time, temperature and prior structure. Procedure A plain carbon hypereutectoid steel, S.A.E. 52100 and Graph-Mo, a molybdenum-bearing high-carbon steel containing some graphite, were chosen for this investigation. The chemical analyses of these electric-furnace steels are given in Table I. The procedure used was exactly that reported previously,&apos; hence the details will not be repeated here. Normalized (165o°F.) and spheroidized prior structures were utilized on all steels with hot-rolled and quenched (I600°F. oil) prior conditions added for the plain carbon steel. The end-quench test developed by Jominy10 was sclected for use in this investigation and, with the noted exceptions, the American Society for Testing Materials standard procedure was followed. The effect of time at temperature was examined at intervals of o, 10 and 40 min. and 4 hr., and a few 16-hr. tests were run. Electricity, as normally thought of by a layman&apos;s definition, is a manmade force that has no color, no odor, is not visible, cannot be heard, yet man can control it and make it perform his work for him. A person dare not cheat on it, for it then will master him. It has laws, rules, and regulations that must be strictly adhered to if it is to perform in the safest, most reliable, and economical manner. In the early days of coal mining the power source was man himself. Later man employed steam and compressed air to reduce his muscle power requirements needed in the extraction of coal. By the turn of the 20th century, electricity had become the most common source of power for the coal industry. Steam and compressed air are still found in use in isolated cases today for specific applications; however, they are rapidly being replaced by electricity. Electrical laws and regulations are quite extensive and somewhat complex for the proper generation and use of electricity. Man-made laws, rules, and regulations for the care and handling of electricity, designed for man&apos;s safety, are rigidly enforced by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, as well as the various state departments of mines. BACKGROUND Until recent years most underground coal mines used direct current exclusively for all movable and for some stationary equipment. Exceptions were for permanent pumps, tipple, fan, and outside buildings where alternating current was normally employed. However, over 60 years ago there were mines with dual systems. Alternating current was used for cutting machines, drills, and pumps, direct current for locomotives. There were no other machines as these were hand-loading mines. Later, during early mechanization in the 1920s, alternating current was also applied to loading machines at some mines. Use of dual electric systems then declined until fairly recently when

With the aid of the splat-cooling technique of rapid quenching, metastable alloy phases based on antimony ad bismuth have been prepared. At room temperature, simple cubic phases were found in the Sb + Au, 56 + Yd, and Sb + Ni systems. Another phase was retained in the Au-Bi system at -190°C; in this systent, a microcrystalline phase and a rhombohedrally distorted phase were also observed. The crystal chemistry of these phases is discussed in terms of their valence electron concentration range. A remarkable five-step Phase sequence was found upon heating and equilibration of certain metastable Au-Bi alloys. USING the splat- cooling technique of rapid quenching from the liquid,&apos; a large number of metastable intermediate alloy phases have been prepared in recent years. Thus, Hume-Rothery phases of the hexagonal type based on the valence electron concentration have been produced in systems where they are missing in equilibrium, e.g., Ag-Ge 1 or AU-Sb. 3 In a comprehensive study of metastable alloys based on tin, simple hexagonal metastable y phases were found, raising the total of stable and metastable y phases from 3 to 13. 4 In the In-Bi system, five new metastable intermediate phases were retained.&apos; In most cases, the new metastable phases have some crystal chemical characteristics in common: a) They have rather simple, elementlike structures with few atoms per unit cell, e.g., y phase,4&apos;5 or the metastable primitive cubic phases in the Ag-Te and and Au-Te systems.= b) Their structures are often related to those of the terminal phases, or to elements that are straddled in their position in the periodic table by the constituent elements; this is the case for metastable ß (In-Bi) with the structure of white ß Sn,&apos; or metastable a (Cd-sn). 4 c) They seem to represent the crystal structures appropriate to certain average group number (AGN) ranges in which no or few single-phase structures exist in equilibrium. These average group number ranges can probably be equated in the case of many elements of the Ba(Zn)-Bs(As) groups with the averaged valence electron concentration. In the present work, the splat-cooling technique has been applied to the alloys of antimony and bismuth. In equilibrium, neither element forms intermediate alloy phases with other B elements from groups Bl(Cu) to B4(Si) that contain more than 66.7 at. pct of Sb or Bi, respectively, e.g., AUSb 2. 7 Thus, antimony- or bismuth-rich phases, which might be closely related to antimony or bismuth, and which would reflect struc- tural changes occurring on alloying with small amounts of addition elements, do not exist. Also, the terminal solubility of antimony and bismuth for all B metals is very small. It was therefore of interest to investigate the influence of enforced, nonequilibrium solid solution of addition elements in antimony and bismuth on their crystal structures. It was found that additions of group B 2-B4 metals act distinctly differently than additions of group T 10 and B1 metals. The latter set of additives will be treated here. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Alloy preparation and splat-quenching followed closely the procedures described in Refs. 1, 4, and 5; they consisted of the preparation of master alloys from high-purity starting materials (99.99+ pct) and blast-atomizing of 20-mg quantities onto copper sheets. The resulting approximately 1 to 5 u thick foils were investigated by X-ray diffraction. The cooling rates obtained are of the order of 107 to 10 8 C per set,&apos;" causing solidification to proceed at a rat; of approximately 100 cm per sec.&apos; Powder patterns of the resulting fine-crystalline materials were taken with filtered CuK, radiation. ORIGINALLY slusher drift development was conventional, advancing the drift full 10x13-ft size at 6 ft per round. This proved dangerous and costly because the weak fractured rock of the orebody cannot be left raw for any length of time without its reacting with air to cause spalling. With this method of drift development ground conditions were worsened by many blasts and the length of time it was necessary for the drift to remain open. The problem was practically solved by driving 5x7-ft pilot drifts, then enlarging to 10x13-ft raw size by slashing with 50 to 60-ft diamond drill holes. Calculated explosive charges are used to avoid wall and roof shattering. Still more recently jacklegs and sectional steel replaced the diamond drills, resulting in the same work for less than half the cost, see Figs. 1 and 2. Crosscuts at right angles to the main haulage drifts, which cross through the center of the ore-body, divide the ore into 200-ft blocks. Eight slusher drifts on 50-ft centers draw from one block. The slusher floor is 11 ft above the rail, inclined at 1 pct grade, and the top is 18 ft below the undercut. The finished slusher drift is 102.5 or 120 ft long, depending on whether it is north or south of the crosscut. Drawpoints are staggered on each side at 17.5-ft centers. The completed drift is concreted and has an inclined ramp and a vent at the back. When crosscuts and gangways have been excavated and concreted and slusher stations installed, slusher drift development is carried out in 10 clear-cut stages: 1—Pilot drift is driven full length, 5x7 ft. 2—Station is excavated at half-way point in pilot drift. 3—Pilot drift is enlarged to slusher drift size by drilling. 4—Lower part of slash is blasted and mucked for floor concrete. 5—Floor is poured. 6—Inside upper half of slusher drift is blasted, mucked, and concreted. 7—Outside upper half of slusher drift is blasted, mucked, and concreted. 8—Drawpoints are excavated. 9—Drawpoints are concreted. 10—Concrete ramp and sheave protection recess are constructed at back end of slusher drift. A 5x7-ft pilot drift is driven full length on the center line of the proposed slusher drift using a jackleg and detachable bits on 7/8-in. hexagon steel. A 10-hp air-driven slusher and 36-in. scraper pull muck directly into cars in the main haulage crosscut, see Fig. 2. Operations are on a three-shift basis. One man mucks the previous round, drills, and blasts his round in a shift. Average advance is 5 ft per shift. When the pilot drift is completed, 7 ft of drift in the center section is enlarged to full raw slusher drift size of 10x13 ft, for the set-up to drill long slash holes. The pilot drift is slashed to full raw size from this station with jacklegs and tungsten carbide chisel bits on 7/8-in. sectional steel. Crews line the holes without trouble, working from controls established by the engineers, and the pattern of holes for the slash is arranged to give the least shattering effect

Recent studies on the determination of hydrogen in steel have shown that the hot-extraction method for removing hydrogen from a solid sample is preferable to its removal from a molten sample by vacuum fusion or by fusion in vacuum with tin. A number of techniques are available, however, for determining the hydrogen so extracted. They include: thermal conductivity, gas chromatography, pressure measurement before and after catalytic oxidation of the hydrogen to water and removal of the water, and pressure measurement before and after diffusion of the hydrogen through a palladium membrane. These techniques have been evaluated on the basis of initial cost, maintenance, speed and accuracy of analysis, and applicable concentration range. The results of this study showed that the palladium-membrane technique is best suited for routine use. FOR some time investigators have been concerned with the origin, form, and effect of hydrogen in steel. In such stdies&apos;, the analysis for hydrogen constitutes one of the most important phases. It is quite apparent that the results for hydrogen concentrations in a given steel are dependent on the method of obtaining the sample, storage of the sample until analysis, preparation of the sample, and analysis of the sample, including all the facets inherent in the calibration and operation of an apparatus for gas analysis. There are a number of means available for determining hydrogen. This is a critical study of some of the more common techniques in use today. In most conventional melting and casting methods, hydrogen concentrations of 4 to 6 parts per million (ppm) in steel are quite common. Because of the undesirable effects of hydrogen on steel there has been increased use of techniques such as vacuum melting,&apos; vacuum casting, and ladle-to-ladle stream degassing, which lower the hydrogen content to levels on the order of 1 to 2 ppm. Therefore, the method used for determining hydrogen in steel must be sensitive and precise. In any analytical procedure for gases in metals there are two distinct operations—the extraction of the gas from the metal and the analysis of the extracted gas. To extract the gas from the steel, three methods have been employed: 1) fusion of the sample with graphite at high temperature; 2) fusion with a flux, such as tin, at a lower temperature; and 3) extraction of the hydrogen from the solid sample at a temperature below the melting point of the steel. Fusion with graphite is the least-acceptable method. The blank in this method is higher and more variable than in either of the other two methods. The hydrogen fraction of the total gas composition usually is between 10 and 50 pct; thus, a larger analytical error is possible. The vacuum-tin fusion4 extraction of hydrogen is probably the most rapid method in use today; the extraction time is usually about 10 min. However, with this system a bake-out of the freshly charged tin for 2 hr is necessary and a change of crucible and a charge of fresh tin are required after each day of operation whether one or thirty samples have been analyzed. In addition, frequent checks of blank rates are required since CO and Na are continually being given up by the steel samples dissolved in the tin bath. The composition of the gas in this method lends itself readily to analysis; although the hydroge concentration may fall to as low as 50 pct, more often it is above 90 pct, thus allowing a more precise analysis (because of less interference from other gases). In 1940 ewell&apos; published the hot-extraction method for extracting hydrogen from the solid sample, comparing analysis for hydrogen extracted at 600°C with similar analysis for the gas extracted at 1700°C by fusion with graphite. Good agreement for hydrogen was obtained between these two methods, provided sufficient time was allowed for extraction at the lower temperature. carsone obtained good results in his comparison of this hot-extraction method with vacuum-tin fusion. Subsequent work by Geller and sun7 and Hill and ohnson&apos; has shown that steel samples should be heated to at least 800°C to effect the release not only of the diffusible hydrogen but also of the "residual" hydrogen that may be present as methane. Since the rate of evolution of hydrogene9l0 depends on such factors as sample size and composition, thermal history, and extent of cold work, a fixed extraction time is not possible. Feldspathic deposits occur widely throughout the United States, but North Carolina, California, Connecticut, and South Carolina accounted for over 80% of the total domestic feldspar output for the year 1973.1 Pegmatites and granites constitute the major feldspar reserves of the United States, 2 and in addition, feldspar is produced as a byproduct by firms whose major products are spodumene and mica. 3 Feldspar flotation is practiced in the United States, Mexico, Finland, Norway, West Germany, Japan, and the USSR. According to the US Bureau of Mines estimates, the production of feldspar in the United States and rest of the world were 704,000 and 2,514,000 t, respectively. Feldspar is principally used as a flux in making glass, pottery, porcelain, enamel, tile, and other ceramic products. In recent years, the domestic feldspar industry is faced with a number of problems. As a result of increased cost of energy and the introduction in 1972 of new legislative programs relating to air, water, and noise pollution, land-use restrictions, and mined-land rehabilitation, the production costs have increased. Apart from the increased cost of operation, an operational problem exists with the feldspar producers in North Carolina, especially those in the Spruce Pine area. This problem is concerned with the use of hydrofluoric acid in the feldspar flotation. Feldspar producers in Spruce Pine, NC, have been discharging process waste water into the North Toe River. The mill waste water contains active fluoride ions. Fluoride in excessive concentrations is undesirable in waters used for drinking. It is stated that water containing 0.9-1.0 ppm fluoride will seldom cause mottled enamel on children&apos;s teeth; and for adults, concentrations less than 3-4 are not likely to cause endemic cumulative fluorosis and skeletal effect. Although the literature on this subject is rather confusing and inconclusive, the inference that concentrations over 4 ppm may affect bone structure is clear. According to the recent Federal Register,4 maximum fluoride level of 1.4 ppm at 79°-98°F is considered to be adequate and safe for the protection of health of the consumers. The EPA and state environmental agencies have accelerated their drive to reduce water pollution on a faster schedule. By 1977, the EPA specifications for maximum contaminant level of fluoride ions in the discharge waters of feldspar milling operatins is expected to be reduced to 2.0 ppm. The other problems of using hydrofluoric acid are the following: toxicity, hazards of handling and storage, and high cost as compared to other inorganic acids (almost 16 times the cost of sulfuric acid). In order to reduce fluoride levels in mill discharge waters, mining companies have taken the following steps: I) Recirculating a part of their mill water. Even though recirculation of mill water seems to be a novel method of reducing fluoride contamination of the discharge water, there are certain operational and handling problems. 2) Conducting research on the treatment of fluorides in mill waste water. The technology of treatment of fluoride ions has received considerable interest in the recent years. A recent research report5 estimates that the cost of fluoride ion removal to meet the present specifications in the feldspar industry is approximately $0.25/t of ore processed, and about $0.50/t of feldspar produced. At the request of the feldspar producing industries in North Carolina, the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Minerals Research Laboratory has taken up a research program directed towards overcoming the fluoride ion pollution problem. After a close study of the operational, technical, and economic aspects of feldspar flotation, it was decided to attempt to replace the conventional hydrofluoric acid process. Conventional Feldspar Flotatin Using Hydrofluoric Acid Since the inception of the feldspar flotation process using hydrofluoric acid by O&apos;Meara2,6 the process has achieved a great commercial success. In the conventional flotation separation of feldspar-quartz, hydrofluoric acid is used to suppress quartz and activate feldspar, and a long chain amine salt (acetate or chloride) is used as a collector. The bulk of amine collectors used in current feldspar operations are applied as the water-soluble acetates of the free-base amines. These products are pastes or waxy solids which are available in a range of acetic acid neutralization levels generally 50 to 100% neutralized. In spite of the problems mentioned in connection with the use of hydrofluoric acid, this process is extremely stable with respect to changes in the process variables. With the exception of a few operations, alaskite and pegmatite are the major sources of feldspar.7 In the flotation treatment of a pegmatite that contains iron-bearing minerals (heavy minerals), mica, feldspar, and silica, a logical order of removal presents itself considering the following:8 1) Mica is readily floated by an amine collector in a pulp pH 3.5. Some iron-bearing minerals will usually respond to amine collector in acid circuit with the mica concentrate. 2) Since iron minerals tend to occur invariably in the feldspar concentrate, it is desirable to remove most of these prior to feldspar flotation. A fatty acid or a petroleum sulfonate collector used in this flotation step in acid circuit will float iron-bearing minerals. 3) Using hydrofluoric acid to maintain pH of 2.5, an amine collector employed in a final step will float feldspar away from silica, usually leaving the latter in the tailing as a high-grade silica concentrate. The problems connected with the flotation separation of feldspar-quartz arise due to the similarities in their chemical structure. Therefore, any reagent system that is likely to succeed in feldspar-quartz separation should have adsorption affinity towards one of the minerals and depression effect towards the other mineral.
