Periclase-type oxides were examined microscopically after being exposed to siliceous liquids. The rate of grain growth was found to be inversely proportional to the grain diameter. Grain growth proceeds more rapidly at higher temperatures, but is retarded by increasing liquid contents. aMag-nesiowiistites with higher MgO contents grow less rapidly than those with higher FeO contents. The growth rate is reduced by the presence of a second solid phase. The silica-containing liquid penetrates as a film between the individual magnesiowus tite grains. This is independent of time, temperature, amount of liquid, or the MgO/ Fe0 ratio. When present, olivine and spinel-type phases can provide a solid-to-solid &apos;&apos;bridge" between magnesioustite grains. THIS paper presents the results of a study of the microstructures of periclase type oxides in the presence of a silicate liquid. The purpose was to learn more about the effect of service factors such as 1) time, 2) temperature, and 3) liquid content upon A) grain growth, and B) liquid location among the solid grains. This study was prompted by the fact that periclase refractories are known to have very little solid-to-solid contact when the phases which are present are limited to periclase and liquid. Such a micro-structure gains industrial significance because it permits fracture during service when stresses are applied at high temperatures. The details of ceramic microstructures have not received extensive attention. This is in contrast to the extensive attention given to a) the phase relationships pertaining to refractory compositions, and b) the details of the microstructures of comparable metallic materials. A brief review will be made of the pertinent phase relationships and microstructural considerations in general, as well as of refractory compositions. a) Phase Relationships. This investigation was limited to those compositions in which (Mg, Fe)O was the solid phase. MgO and FeO form a complete series of solid solutions. Pure MgO has the name of periclase. The related FeO structure is called wustite. Both have the NaC1-type structure: however, wustite possesses a cation deficiency so that the true composition is Fe<10 even in the presence of metallic iron. The phase relationships involving solid (Mg, Fe)O and a silicate liquid are shown in Fig. 1. In this case. the liquid is saturated with (Mg, Fe)o. There-fore its SiOz content is below that encountered in orthosilicate liquids. As a consequence the liquid phase specie:; are primarily the following ions: and 0-&apos; plus occasional Fe+ ions. Two features are of importance: a) the liquid contains relatively small species and b) the liquid contains large quantities of the same species as the solid. viz., Fig. 2 shows the system, FeO-SiOz, which will be used in some of the discussions that follow. This diagram is the right side, vertical section of Fig. 1. Here, as pre\iously, the composition at the FeO end of the diagram is nonstoichiometric, varying from Feo.950 when the liquid oxide is in contact with the solid iron, to about Fe 0, when the solid oxide is in equilibrium with an atmosphere of equal proportions of CO and C02 at the solidus temperature. The Fe/O ratio will be maintained in wustite in the presence of SiO,. However, the FeM/Fe++ ratio in the liquid will be lower because of the effect OIF the SiO, on the activity of the FeO. With the addition of MgO to wustite, the over-all composition (IvZg, Fe)@, has a value of x lying between 0.9 and 1.0 when the COz/CO ratio is 1.0&apos;. b) Microstructures. In general, published attention to refractory microstructures has been directed toward the phase analyses that accompany compositional variations. This is illustrated by Harvey6 in his work on silica brick and by wells7 in his work on periclase brick. In each case, a series of altered zones is encountered which provides a sequence of phase associations. If due consideration is given to reaction kinetics, such an examination reveals phases that are compatible with equilibrium studies. Admittedly, however, it is often necessary to determine more complicated polycomponent systems to account for all the phases present.8 Relatively little attention has been given to microstructural geometry in ceramic materials. Certainly less attention has been given to this aspect of ceramic microstructures than to the size, shape, and distribution of the constituent phases in metals. INTRODUCTION The flow potential in a pattern flood element is a function of the mobility ratio and how far the injected flood front has gone.1,2 For a waterflood project having a mobility ratio of one, the conductance—which is the flow rate per unit pressure drop (q/Ap)—-will remain the same throughout the life of the flood. If the mobility ratio is favorable ( < I), the conductance of the project will drop continuously throughout the operation. If, on the other hand, the mobility ratio is unfavorahlc. the conductance ratio will increase continuously. Therefore, if the reservoir engineer wishes to predict either the rate at a specified pressure or the pressure at some rate for a secondary recovery project, he must know how the conductance will vary during the flood. This paber is concerned with the determination of equations relating elongation to the amount of shear taking place both along grain boundaries and in slip planes of poly crystalline aggregates during creep. Certain discrepancies with previously used equations are pointed out. Grain boundaries were observed to become serrated during creep, but it is shown that this does not necessarily prevent further grain boundary sliding. Direct obser-vations of subgrain boundary ingration lead to the conclusion that this migration facilitates sliding along serrated grain boundaries. It is bointed out that the state of stress at triple boints is still unknown. MOST of the mechanisms of deformation contributing to elongation are shear processes, such as slip, kinking, grain boundary sliding, and twinning. For quantitative investigations of individual deformation mechanism it is necessary to know the equation which permits the calculation of speci-tnen elongation from measured amounts of shear. This calculated elongation must then be compared with the observed total elongation. The authors&apos; special interest concerned grain boundary sliding during creep. Although this subject has already been investigated quantitatively by McLean,&apos; Rachinger,&apos; and Fazan, Sherby, and Dorn, calculations indicated that none of the equations used thus far to relate shear with elongation were sufficiently well founded. A basic study of this relationship was thus made and the results of this study (which do not entirely agree with those previously used) are presented. Most of the ideas set forth apply not only to grain boundary sliding but to other mechanisms of shear as well. THE SPEAR-ELONGATION RELATIONSHIP Basic Models—The relationship between shear and elongation is trivial in the simplest case of shear, which is shown in Fig. l(a). The vector A; designates the displacement across the shear interface, and Au, and Aut are its components parallel and normal to the tensile direction, respectively. It is evident that the specimen elongation due to shear is equal to the longitudinal component of the shear vector, and it should be noted that the normal component does not contribute to the elongation of the specimen (there are, of course, two normal components in a three-dimensional model). The model shown in Fig. l(b) may be applied to mechanical twinning and to subgrain boundary tnigration. In this case the width (h) of an already existing shear band increases by the migration of an interface, but the shear angle y (angle of mis-orientation in the case of a subgrain boundary) remains constant. The geometrical relationships indicated in Fig. l(b) permit this case to be reduced to the one shown in Fig. l(a). For the resulting elongation A6 we find: where AV/V = fraction of the volume of the specimen swept by migrating interfaces , and 1 = length of specimen. Thus, assuming for example that the angle of mis-orientation is 1 deg, and that P = 45 deg, we find that the specimen elongates 0.87 pct of its length if the entire volume of the specimen is swept once by such a subgrain boundary. An example of deformation by migration of subgrain boundaries is shown in Fig. 2. The specimen shown was repolished after 9.8 pct creep strain and the test then continued for another \ pct. Since the shear vector has, in general, a component normal to the surface, subgrain boundary migration results in the formation of an inclined band delineating the region swept by the subgrain boundary. The Pachuca silver district, situated about 100 kilometers northeast of Mexico City (Fig. l), covers roughly the southeastern half of the Sierra de Pachuca. The latter is a mountain range with northwest trend, and forms a part of the northeastern rim of the topographic basin known as the Valley of Mexico. The length of the Sierra proper is about 50 km., its greatest width about 9 km., and it rises to a maximum of 600 meters above the general level of the basin floor. The shaft was drilled on US government land m the Piceance Creek basin and was funded by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). It was drilled to 723 m to provide access to rich deposits of oil shale, nahcolite, and dawsonite for geotechnical test work and environmental mining research. Rotary drilling and dual-string, reverse-air, jet-assist circulation methods were used. Drilling required eight months. Site preparation, running, and cementing the casing required another four months. A 2.44-m ID steel welded casing, 508 mm thick was installed and 2.7 kt of cement were slurried and pumped into the annulus.

A relatively small area in Malaya, about 200 miles long by 40 miles wide, is the most important source of tin in the world. Some tin is recovered in other parts of the peninsula. Of the tin mined, 98 pct is recovered from alluvial deposits. From 1935 to 1941 the average annual world production of tin was 190,000 tons. The average annual production from Malaya during the same period was 62,000 tons or about one third of the total. Other producing countries, in order of importance, were the Netherlands East Indies 34,000 tons, Bolivia 30,000, Belgian Congo, Nigeria, Siam, Burma, China, and a few others with smaller amounts. The serious shortage of tin during the war period was due to the fact that the Japanese were occupying Malaya, Netherlands East Indies, Siam, Burma, and China which, together, formerly were producing 65 pct of the world supply. Because of the importance of tin in the world economy, and because of the fact that little is generally known in this country regarding the methods of recovering the tin in Malaya, it is believed that a short description of the industry, as carried on there, may be of interest to many of the readers. In addition you may be interested in the effect of the Japanese occupation, subsequent recovery of the properties and conditions existing at that time. The Malay Peninsula lies at the southeast tip of Asia. Singapore, a British colony, is situated on a small island at the southern end of the peninsula. It is a city of nearly a million population, an important world port, the site of a large British naval base and of one of the tin smelters. The Federation of Malaya consists of nine states, plus Penang, Malacca, and other small areas formerly part of the Straits Settlements, and it now covers the entire peninsula. The civil administration is controlled by the British. A constitution was adopted recently after reaching agreement with the Malay Sultans of the various states, who retain control of religious matters. The Capital is at Kuala Lumpur, a city of about 200,000 population, 250 miles north of Singapore and about half way to Penang. The country covers an area of 51,000 square miles, an area about equal to that of Florida and about one third that of California. It has a population of about seven million consisting of Malays, Chinese, East Indians, and a relatively small number of Europeans. The principal products are tin and rubber. There are over three million acres of planted rubber. The country is not self-supporting agriculturally as about one third of the necessary food supplies is imported. Rice is the principal food of the Asiatic population and some of the recent unrest is caused by a shortage of rice and the consequent high price. Good highways have been built through the settled part of the country. A railway, Government owned, extends from Singapore northward through the entire peninsula. The climate is tropical but health conditions are good for a tropical country. THE iron and steel activities of this meeting opened on Monday morning with the steel melting session," with G. B. Waterhouse in the chair and A. L. Feild as vice-chairman. N. A. Zeigler&apos;s paper, on "Gases Extracted From Iron Carbon Alloys by Vacuum Melbing," created considerable interest and the discussion in general was most favorable. H. W. Gillett and Louis Jordan of the Bureau questioned the method of analysis for oxygen and C. H. Herty, Jr., and J. M. Gaines, Jr., I , expressed their surprise at the large amount of oxygen with the high ,carbon alloys. Whether the gases found existed as gas in blowholes or as oxide inclusions was also a moot point. A paper by C. D. King, on "Basic Open-Hearth Yields," was an extremely interesting and valuable contribution. It was discussed by C. E.Kinney and A. L. Feild and numerous questions were asked throughout the presentation. Mr. King then presented a critical analysis of the losses together with novel methods of calculating them. A paper by C. H. Herty, Jr., and J. M. Gaines, Jr., on "Unreduced Oxides in Pig Iron and Their Elimination in the Basic Open-Hearth Furnace," followed. The question of silicates and oxides in pig iron created much discussion, notably by Henry Hanson and W. J. MacKenzie, who gave figures on chipping cost as a function of blast-furnace practice.

GENTLEMEN : It is my privilege to transmit herewith the reports for the calendar year 1932 of your Treasurer and the Chairmen of the following Standing Committees: Finance, Admissions, Membership, Papers and Publications, Library, and Mining and Metallurgy. To these reports you are referred for additional details of the year&apos;s activities. Finances.-Continuation of depressed conditions in the mining industry (in common with other industries) caused the income of the Institute to decline from $168,274 in 1931 to $138,331. However, economies were effected so as to reduce expenditures from $171,198 to $135,977. As a consequence the net result of the operations for the year was a-surplus of income amounting to $2,354 compared with a deficit of $2,924 in 1931. This gratifying result is accounted for in large measure by the foresight of the Finance Committee in anticipating a substantial decline in income and preparing the budget accordingly. Incidentally, the tentative budget for 1933 has been balanced at $125,000.

In an earlier paper1 measurements of contact angles due to the effect of xanthates on mineral surfaces were reported. The solutions in which these measurements were made differed widely from those of modern flotation circuits. It is intended, however, by introducing, one at a time, the other principal reagents of flotation, to approach gradually the solution composition of flotation liquors. The work now described is an attempt to determine the effect of one of the most important of these reagents—namely, sodium cyanide—on the establishment of air-mineral contact. The work has been carried out for the following companies: Broken Hill South, North Broken Hill, Zinc Corporation, Electrolytic Zinc of Australasia, Mount Lyell Mining and Railway, and Burma Corporation. Since the effect of cyanide is inseparably connected with the alkalinity, the results cited below deal with the mutual effects of alkalis and cyanide. Alkalis alone exert a significant effect on the air-mineral contact but comparatively large amounts are required. Since the addition of a small amount of cyanide greatly decreases the degree of alkalinity necessary for the suppression of contact at surfaces of any of the minerals experimented with (except galena) and since alkalis are rarely used alone in practice, little attention has been paid to cyanide-free solutions. It was shown in the previous paper that, excluding the dixanthogen effect, whenever contact was practicable at all in an ethyl xanthate solution the angle of contact was 60". There is, therefore, less necessity to measure equilibrium contact angles; in fact, the experiments herein described have generally been conducted with a view to determining whether contact is possible and not to measuring the actual value of the contact angle. The separations which have generally to be effected in dealing with complex sulfide ores are: (1) galena from sphalerite, pyrite, etc.; (2) sphalerite from pyrite and/or gangue minerals; (3) copper minerals from pyrite and gangue minerals; (4) pyrite from gangue minerals; (5) chal-

Every mathematical statement of a measure of anything (as distinguished from a count&apos;) is followed by a qualification—always implied if not explicity stated—-that the statement is only an estimate, which may vary from absolute accuracy within certain limits, according to the accuracy of the measuring instrument. This basic fact, so obvious to engineers, is not so well understood by many that make use of laboratory coal tests. The tolerances that must be allowed in measurements of coal quality are very important in both their commercial and engineering applications—and the significance of these tolerances depends upon the use made of the laboratory coal test. Only in recent years has there been any intensive study of this question of tolerances as applied to measurements of coal quality. There is very little in our published literature on the subject, and what has been published is not readily comprehended by those who sell coal, or buy coal and use it, unless they happen to have made a study of the subject themselves. There is great need for more widespread understanding of what lias been discovered and how it applies to the use of laboratory coal tests. What follows is an attempt to condense into a few pages the results of the major investigations so far reported, and to explain their meaning in simple nontechnical language, with the addition of some recent illustrative experiments. Determining Deviations in Quality It is necessary at the outset to distinguish between: (I) the accuracy with which one test indicates the quality on one lot of coal; and (2) the accuracy with which a test of one lot of coal represents the average quality of a commercial product, of which the buyer will presumably receive a series of shipments—perhaps many thousands of tons. It is necessary to make this distinction because coal is a variable material—a heterogeneous mixture of a variety of components—the quality of which will vary from one lot to another. THE rate of flotation of solid particles determines the percentage recovery of these particles which can be obtained during a given time interval. It is an established fact that the recovery is greatest in the fine sand size range and falls off on either side of this size range. It is also a fact that the history of the development of concentrating devices has been marked by a desire to recover the small particles: tables were developed to treat material too fine to recover in jigs; flotation recovers material too fine to be recovered on tables. As our ores become more complex and require finer grinding, a greater proportion is in the slow-floating size range. It is therefore of economic importance that the effect of size of particle upon rate of flotation be studied. Many studies have been made along this line. The present investigation attempts to quantify the rate of flotation by means of a rate equation, and then compares the effect of size upon the rate of flotation. It was found that the flotation rate constant increases with increase in diameter of particle in the size range smaller than the optimum size particle. The flotation rate constant decreases with an increase in diameter of particle in the size range coarser than the optimum size particle. This suggested two different actions taking place, and these are discussed. Suggestions for further work in order to improve the flotation rate of both fine and coarse particles are made. The usual method of expressing rate is to plot cumulative percent recovery vs time. If we knew the equation of this kind of curve we could replot it as a straight line, and the slope of the line would be an index of the magnitude of the flotation rate. It is easier to compare straight lines than curves. The basis used for obtaining the equation of the recovery vs time curve is the law of mass action. This law states that the "rate of a chemical reaction is proportional to the &apos;active masses&apos; of the reacting substances present at any given time." This, of course, implies a constant temperature. We can modify this for our use by using the term flotation reaction instead of chemical reaction and the term floatable particle instead of active masses. dC Thus----— kc [1] where C denotes concentration of particles, t denotes time, k denotes a proportionality constant. If the exponent of C is 1, then we have a first order rate reaction. If the exponent of C is 2, then we have a second order rate reaction. For a first order rate reaction, we obtain, after integration, where k is again a proportionality constant and has the dimension of the reciprocal of time. C, is the original concentration or weight or percentage of floatable particles. C, is the concentration or weight or percentage of floatable particles remaining in the flotation cell after time t. If all particles of the mineral to be floated were capable of floating we could take C, as 100 and C, would be 100 - R, where R is the cumulative percentage recovery of mineral at time t. But it is not usual for all of the particles to be capable of floating, because of surface oxidation, etc. Therefore, we must introduce a factor x which is the percentage of un-floatable mineral. DESPITE the fact that centrifugal fans were first developed for ventilating mines and that artificial ventilation was first practiced in mines, the lack of knowledge of mining men on mine ventilation in general, and on fan performances and characteristics in particular, is very much in evidence today. While it is true that mines are much better ventilated now than they were 20 to 30 years ago, we have made very little progress in the study of mine ventilation, or in mine ventilating fan design. Today the average mine operator is woefully dependent on the engineers of mine fan manufacturers when he is in the market for a fan, and this situation works to the disadvantage of both the operator and the manufacturer. The former may be imposed upon by an unscrupulous sales engineer and induced to buy a fan which is not the proper one for the mine; when it is operating it may be wasteful of power and even accessory to a serious mine disaster. More often, however, it is the fan manufacturer who is imposed on. If the operator asks the manufacturer to build for him a fan that will deliver a certain quantity of air against a certain specified pressure and requiring a specified number of horse power when operating under these conditions, the manufacturer may build a fan that will comply with these specifications to the letter. When the fan is installed it is frequently found that it is delivering a greater quantity of air against a lesser pressure or a lesser quantity of air against a greater pressure, and is requiring more horse power than specified in the first case and less than that specified in the second. In either case the operator usually upbraids the manufacturer for not meeting specifications, and refuses to pay for the fan. The trouble in either case outlined above is that the pressure necessary to force the specified quantity of air through the mine has been estimated incorrectly by the operator or his engineers. A series of macrographs are presented for the purpose of graphically recording the strain phenomenon that accompanies the energy transition in the Charpy impact testing of a mild steel that is susceptible to strain aging. STRAIN patterns in mild steel Charpy impact specimens were obtained in order to determine whether, on the first appearance of plastic strain during deformation, the initial fracture cracks appear in the region of plastic strain or in the elasti-cally deformed regions between. Although this attempt to locate the initiation of cleavage was not successful, the observed strain patterns illustrating various stress conditions in partially deformed Charpy specimens are presented along with a discussion of the possible dependence of transition energy on the yield phenomenon. Earlier work on the development of strain patterns in mild steel have been reported by Fry1 and later by Jevon.2 Harris, Rinebolt, and Raring3 observed characteristic strain markings on the surface of Charpy V-notch impact specimens fractured above and below the transition temperature which they presented schematically. It is intended that the strain figures presented here will add to the literature a graphic correlation of strain with transition energy in impact specimens. Samples of % in. round hot rolled, 0.20 pct C steel were machined to standard 0.394 in. sq, V-notch Charpy impact specimens. Preliminary testing involved determination of transition temperature, Fig. 1, using a Sontagg impact tester. These data were subsequently used to select temperatures above, within, and below the transition range at which specimens were partially deformed. Partial deformation was obtained by either varying the energy or the testing temperature, see Table I. Macroscopic strain figures shown in Figs. 2 to 19 were produced by several metallographic repolish-ing and etching steps. The macroetchant used was as follows:4 120 g HCl, concentrated; 100 ml water; and 90 g cupric chloride. Strain figures were obtained on the outer surface and on sections through the central portion of the impact specimens in order to determine an approximation of the volumetric strain pattern. In the tensile strain figures reported by Jevon, it was found that strain etching would not work immediately following strain unless the material was heated to 200°C. The impact strain patterns presented here were obtained without this heating, but the specimens were not etched until ten months after straining. This confirms a discussion of Jevon&apos;s paper, in which it was pointed out that strain figures can also be developed after aging for long periods of time at room temperature. Hardness of the strained and unstrained portions, revealed by the etched pattern, was explored using R, impressions converted to R, hardness values. Discussion of Results In the impact test, as in the tensile test, some parts of the specimen yield and deform plastically, while other regions are deformed only elastically. The plastic deformation bears a relation to the imposed stress pattern. In the strain figures presented here, the plastically deformed regions are the dark etching ones. The strain figures are always symmetrical because the stress state in the Charpy-type specimen under impact loading is symmetrical. Most of the treatises on metallurgy intimate that simultaneously with the development by the atomic physicist of a really satisfactory theory of the atom will be inaugurated a new epoch in the science of metals. Metallurgically and metaphorically, we shall dwell in the Utopia of Sir Thomas More. It is my privilege this afternoon to demonstrate that this state has not arrived. An atom is a miniature planetary system consisting of a positively charged nuclear sun about which revolve electrons each carrying the negative charge e. The charge on the nucleus is + Ze where Z is the atomic number and the number of planetary electrons in a neutral atom is equal to Z. These electrons are arranged in several groups having different binding energies. Ordinary x-ray phenomena relate to processes occurring deep within the atom, usually with electrons in the so-called K or L shells. Such electrons in the heavier atoms are so closely bound to the nucleus that the forces exerted by neighboring atoms in a solid are relatively inappreciable. For most practical x-ray investigation, the atom may be considered as in the gaseous phase completely isolated from its neighbors. The K radiation from an element in the gaseous state, in the solid or liquid phase, or even in combination with other elements in all its possible valences, is almost identical.‡ Visual and ultraviolet spectroscopy is concerned with disturbances of the most loosely bound outer or valence electrons of the atom, always in the vapor state. As already announced, the XCIIId meeting of the Institute will be held at Toronto, beginning July 23, 1907. Hotel Headquarters will be at the King Edward Hotel, in which also the sessions will be held. The Queens, Rossin, Wallen, Iroquois and Palmer are good hotels not far from the King Edward. Members must secure their hotel-accommodations beforehand, by direct correspondence with the hotel they select. For those who neglect this precaution, the Local Committee will doubtless do what it can, but is unable to promise anything. Correspondence concerning this meeting (including notices of intention to attend it) should be addressed hereafter exclusively to Mr. W. G. Miller, Provincial Geologist, Bureau of Mines, Toronto, who is the representative of the Local Committee. The excursion to Cobalt, Lake Tenagami, Sudbury, etc., arranged by that Committee, involves the use of a special Pullman train for meals and lodging. After waiting a reasonable time to hear from members, the Local Committee has made its contract for Pullman cars. According to its latest report, there was still room for additional excursionists. Under this head, application made immediately to Mr. Miller may not be too late. Sessions for the presentation of papers, etc., will be held at the King Edward Hotel on Tuesday afternoon, July 23, and Wednesday morning and afternoon, July 24. UNDERGROUND operations of the United States Potash Co. at its mine near Carlsbad, N.M., have been continuous since the property was opened about five years ago. Approximately one million tons of potash has been mined and two shafts have been sunk, each to a depth of about 1000 ft. Outstanding in the company&apos;s operations is the fact that not a single blasting accident has occurred during the aforesaid period. The purpose of this paper is to describe the blasting practice that has made possible the achievement of this accident-prevention record. The mining method employed in extracting the thick horizontal bed of potash may be described as a double-entry room-and-pillar system. Mine development is kept well in advance of extraction operations, and a three years&apos; supply of ore, at least, is always available. Limits of the orebody have not been determined, and in the present system of mining headings are advanced by a "shortwall" method. This was the first potash ore bed developed in the United States. The nature of the deposit, therefore, was unknown, and it was deemed expedient to outline a conservative mining policy. Later, when more is known about the deposit and certain control ascertained, a "longwall" panel retreating method may be found advisable. The necessity for a domestic supply of potash became a national issue previous to and during the World War. The United States Govern-ment came to realize that this country should not be dependent upon foreign sources of potash, and began extensive explorations in many parts of the country, seeking an orebody that would meet the exacting require-ments of the domestic market. The Department of Interior, through the Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines, made every effort to determine the location of potash deposits and encouraged their exploitation by private capital. Through the combined efforts of the Department of Interior and private industry, the deposit now being worked by the United States Potash Co. was discovered and brought into production.
