William Clinton Brown, Brooklyn, N. Y.: The demand for an apparatus for cooling water for condensers, refrigeratingmachinery and air-compressors, as well as water-jacketed furnaces, has led manufacturers to put such an apparatus on the market, so that it is now possible to purchase a cooling-tower, properly designed and constructed, by simply stating the amount of water to be cooled and the temperatures of the hot and the cold water. The principle is similar to that described by Mr. Henrich, but wood is not used in the best apparatus. There are two great objections to wood: First, it cannot last long under the very trying conditions to which it is subjected; and second, it absorbs the organic matter with which water in constant use becomes impregnated, and the resulting odor is very disagreeable. A few days ago I saw a cooling-tower and condenser, built by the Henry R. Worthington Co., in operation at the Edison electric-lighting station in Brooklyn, N. Y., cooling the water for a 700 horse-power condenser. It consisted of a large stack of iron, about 15 feet in diameter by about 30 feet high. This stack was filled with tiling through which the water falls. A whirligig distributes the water evenly over the top, and a large fan, about 6 feet in diameter, driven by a 10 horse-power electric motor, blows air into the bottom, thus giving a positive circulation. The water, in running down the sides of the tiling, is met by the blast of air, and enough is evaporated to cool the rest. The vacuum-gauge on the condenser showed 26 inches; so the condenser was undoubtedly getting sufficient cool water.

A study including effects of 7) pH value, 2) fatty acid collector, 3) fuel oil, 4) interfering ion, 5) particle size, and 6) operational variables. Test results indicate feasibility of fatty acid flotation under certain restrictive conditions. FATTY acids have been used as standard collectors for floating the matrix1-8 but not the leached zone phosphate ores. After a series of investigations, Davenport9 and Tarbutton10 concluded that the Florida leached zone ores tested were unamenable to fatty acid flotation and must be upgraded by floating the siliceous gangue with Armac-T as collector. The cationic flotation was estimated11 to cost almost ten times as much as a fatty acid process that would ideally give the same flotation grades and recoveries of phosphates. Mineralization: Extensive deposits of leached zone aluminiferous phosphate occur in Florida."= The ore sample used for this work was obtained from the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corp., Clear Springs area, Florida. The ore is a potential source of uranium and aluminum as well as phosphorus. Since the uranium and the recoverable aluminum are contained in some of the phosphate minerals, an upgrading of phosphate results in a corresponding enrichment of both uranium and aluminum. The phosphate minerals in the ore are primarily pseudo-wavellite, millisite, and carbonate fluorapatite, with a minor amount of wavellite. Quartz and clay are the common gangue minerals, quartz being predominant. Others present in small amounts are ilmenite, hydrated iron oxides, staurolite, monazite, and zircon. Experimental Procedures: After being dried to less than 1 pct surface moisture the material was dry-ground in a Hardinge conical ball mill to —6 mesh. The ground product was classified into 6/20, 20/200, and —200 mesh size fractions. On the basis of Table I, the coarse and fine size fractions were considered as phosphate concentrates, because of their high phosphorus contents. In contrast, the 20/200 mesh fraction, which was low in phosphorus, was used as the flotation feed. All the flotation tests, unless otherwise stated, were performed in a laboratory Fagergren machine under the following conditions: 1) 400 g of solid feed for each test, 2) 2000 rpm impeller speed, 3) 8.9 pH and 4-min conditioning, and 4) 3-min flotation. The procedure used for the quantitative bubble pick-up tests has been described previously.18

IN this paper the effect of natural ventilation pressures is considered a part of the mine resistance and it is shown that their effect on the mine resistance is not the same as the total natural ventilation pressure of the shafts if the mine has several levels. It is shown that increasing the fan pressure causes the division of the air to approach the condition that would obtain if there were no natural ventilation pressure present. It is shown that if an appreciable difference in pressure is maintained between the beginning and end of a group of splits, the value of the integrated effect of the natural ventilation pressures on the individual splits does not change substantially with moderate changes of this pressure. A method is outlined for determining the resistance factor of the mine and the value of the effect of natural ventilation with the fan operating; also a method for determining this factor when circulation is caused by natural ventilation alone. NATURAL VENTILATION PRESSURE Natural ventilation pressure (N.V.P.) is caused by the difference in weight of the air in two similar columns between two horizontal planes, and the difference in weight is caused principally by the difference in temperature of the two columns. The fan pressure causes some variation in density, but, since it is usually small and affects both columns, its effect is relatively unimportant. It has been suggested that "N.V.P." be called "stack effect"; but, since the term N.V.P. was used in a previous Institute paper,' applied in exactly the same manner, the term will be used. FRICTIONAL RESISTANCE The frictional resistance to flow in a mine without natural ventilation may be expressed as RQ2 where R is a constant for a given air density and Q is the rate of flow. This frictional resistance plus the effect of velocity changes will be called the F pressure (F.P.) and a curve of F.P. against Q, the F characteristic of the mine. If a pressure is applied to a mine by a fan, the air flow so adjusts itself that the drop in pressure through any path from entrance to exit of mine, due to frictional resistances and velocity changes, is the same as that in any other path. The mine resistance varies as the square of the quantity. The air distribution without N.V.P. will be called "normal." NATURAL VENTILATION PRESENT When N.V.P. is irregularly distributed in a mine, it is more convenient in analysis to consider the N.V.P. as a part of the duct resistance. If it is so considered the resistance no longer varies as the square of the quantity, and if N.V.P. exists between levels the distribution of the air is no longer normal. The total N.V.P. of the mine is the pressure caused by the full length of the shafts. If a mine has several levels, N.V.P. exists

Xanthates have been used as collectors of sulfide minerals in the concentration of ores by flotation for over a decade, yet much remains to be done to elucidate the underlying reasons for the remarkable effectiveness of these compounds in this connection. Briefly stated, the known facts concerning the effect of these reagents on the floatability of minerals are as follows: 1. Xanthates are without effect on silicates, silica, and generally on minerals currently regarded as "gangues." 2. Xanthates in very small amount increase enormously the floatability of sulfides of copper, lead, silver, iron and mercury. 3. If zinc sulfides are first '(activated," as by treatment with a copper salt, they are readily floated by xanthates; otherwise not. 4. Elemental copper, silver and gold have their floatabilities increased by xanthates. 5. Sulfides of elements that are not typically metallic—e.g., stibnite, realgar, molybdenit—are not made to float markedly better by treatment with xanthates. 6. Oxidized minerals of lead and copper are floated if treated with large amounts of xanthates, but not so if treated with amounts of the same order of magnitude as required for sulfide flotation. Oxidized zinc minerals are not floated unless xanthates having unusually long hydrocarbon chains (e.g., eight carbon atoms or more) are used. Iron oxides and carbonate are not floated by xanthates. From a flotation standpoint the most striking feature about xanthates is the very small amount required to accomplish startling changes in the behavior of some minerals. The amounts used in practice to effect excellent concentration are frequently of the order of 0.05 lb, of agent per ton of ore; that is, of the order of one part of agent per forty thousand parts of ore. Changes in amount of agent of the order of 0.01 lb. per ton of ore (or 0.002 lb. per ton of pulp, on a 4:l basis) have marked effects on the metallurgical results obtained. Yet these changes represent a variation of but one part per million parts of pulp.

THE official opening at the 134th general meeting of the Institute was held on Oct. 6, but it was prefaced by two round table conferences on Oct. 5. The open-hearth group held the fourth of their semi-annual conferences at the William Penn Hotel, devoting the morning session to discussing a paper by R. L. Cain on the "Manufacture of Forging Steel by the Open-hearth Process," and the afternoon to discussing P. H. Shaeffer's paper on the open-hearth charge. At the Bureau of Mines, a round table conference on the combustibility of coke was held on Tuesday morning, and the afternoon was devoted to a similar conference on the testing of coke. The formal opening session of the meeting assembled in the Music Hall of Carnegie Institute at 10.30 a. m. Graham Bright, chairman of the Pittsburgh Section; called the meeting to order and presided. President Taylor welcomed the visiting members and guests to his home city and reviewed briefly the advancement of mining in the past half century during which, for ex- ample, the coal output had increased from 53,280,000 tons to 523,357,000 tons per year. He emphasized the important part Pennsylvania played in mining and brought out the principal changes that had taken place in methods. In part, his remarks were as follows: The centennial year, 1876, found the coal business of. this country, as a whole, producing 53,280,000 tons, of which amount the bituminous mines of this State yielded 24 per cent. In 1925, this country produced 523,357,000 tons of coal, of which Pennsylvania produced 24 per cent.

Colorado School of Mines The, forty-first annual commencement exercises of the Colorado School of Mines were .held at Golden, Colo., on Friday, May 28, 1915. Dr. Lucien I. Blake delivered an address on Epochs in Science. The degree of Engineer of Mines was conferred upon 30 men, and the degree of Master of Science on one man. At the recent annual meeting of the Mining Engineering Society, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, officers were elected as follows: President, K. M. Sully; Vice-President and Treasurer, D. M. McRae; Secretary, H. Solakian. The Student Auxiliary Society of the A. I. M. E. at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kan., has elected officers as follows for the year 1915-16: President, Harry E. In a study of the influence of cold rolling on mechani cal properties of steel, it was found that the specific rolling procedure influenced crystallographic orientation. Properties developed by several rolling modes were determined and related to crystallographic orientation. Sanzples were cold-rolled various amounts on a laboratory mill. When palm oil was used as a lubricant, the crystallographic orientation was homogeneous throughout the thickness of the samples. Other samples were rolled without lubrication. Variations in intensity of the recrystallization texture components persisted throughout more than 50 pct of the volume of these samples. When the average plastic strain ratio, which is dependent upon crystallogvaphic orientation, was plotted as a function of percent reduction, a maximum was found at 40 pct in the samples which contained the observed texture variation. No maximum was found for the samples with the homogeneous texture distribution. Other mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and yield strength, were not influenced by the variation in crystallopaphic orientation. MECHANICAL properties of steel sheets depend, in general, upon the structural properties of the steel. For example, the Petch equation describes the relationship between yield strength and grain size. Other properties, such as hardness, vary with chemical composition. The plastic strain ratio, or R value, has been found to be dependent upon crystallographic orientation . In the course of investigating the effect of cold rolling on mechanical properties, it was found that a previously reported relationship between percent cold reduction and R value was not always observed. Published data had shown that the optimum cold reduction for best R values is 70 pct for aluminum killed steel.' However, by altering the rolling conditions, the optimum reduction can be shifted to much lower values, or it can be moved to very high values. This paper describes the rolling conditions that lead to shifting of the optimum cold reduction. The effect of rolling conditions on the various structure parameters and the resulting mechanical properties are evaluated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Samples of three low-carbon aluminum killed steels were cold-rolled various amounts on a 9-in.-diam 2-high laboratory mill. Hot-mill thermal practice and steel chemistries are listed in Table I. Steel A was rolled with palm oil lubrication and heavy reductions on each pass; i.e., a total reduction of 75 pct was ac- complished with a maximum of five passes. Steel B was rolled without lubrication, and light reductions were given on each pass. After approximately 75 pct reduction, it was necessary to use a small amount of light oil to achieve any additional reduction in thickness. Following cold reduction, the samples were box-annealed at 1300°F for 10 hr. The heating rate between 800" and 1300°F was 50°F per hr, and the cooling rate following the soak period was 50°F per hr. Tensile specimens were machined from the annealed material and these were used to measure yield strength, tensile strength, and the plastic strain ratio (R value). Recrystallization textures were determined by an inverse pole figure technique.*'3 Integrated intensities of the (110), (002), (112), and (222) reflections were recorded for those planes lying parallel to the sheet surface. Examinations were made on both surfaces of each sample, and also at various levels beneath each surface to approximately 0.010 in. depth by etching techniques. RESULTS R Values. The R values obtained in steels A and B are shown as a function of percent cold reduction in Fig. 1. No optimum cold reduction was observed in steel A, rolled with palm oil lubrication. It is likely, however, that an optimum reduction would have occurred had higher reductions than 88 pct been employed. The optimum reduction in steel B occurred at 40 pct. The kinetics of stabilization have been studied with respect to the isothermal component of the martensitic reaction in ivon-nickel alloys. Although the carbun (or nit-vogen) content may be very low in these alloys, it plays an important vole in the stabilization phenomenon. In fact, if these interstitial elements are removed by moist-hydrogen treatment, no evidence of stabilization is found. In the pvesence of 0.007 wt pct C, the activation energy for the stabilization process is comparable to that -for the diffusion of carbon (or nitrogen) in ferrite) rather than in austenitc. This suggests that the interstitial diffiision controlling the stabilization occurs within the martensitic embryos rather than in the matrix of the parent phase. The kinetics furthev indicate that the interstitial atoms tend to diffuse -from the embryos toward the suvroundings, thereby immobilizing the interface. This appears to be the origin of the stabilizing effect -found in these alloys. PHILIBERT' has shown recently that interstitial elements play an important role in the stabilization of martensitic transformations in iron-base alloys. However, determination of the temperature dependence for this stabilization process has produced values (- 11,000 cal per mol) that cannot be readily identified with the activation energy for diffusion of carbon (or nitrogen) in either ferrite or austenite. In the present work, the isothermal mode of the martensitic reaction was employed to derive the activation energy for stabilization, and this was found to agree fairly well with that for diffusion of carbon (or nitrogen) in ferrite. An iron-nickel alloy with 30.8 wt pct Ni and 0.007 wt pct C was used in these experiments, the specimens being in the form of rods 0.074 in. in diam and 2 1/2 in. long. The specimens were sealed in evacuated vycor tubes and austenitized at 1100°C for 1/2 hr prior to quenching in water. A second series of specimens was decarburized (and denitrogenized) prior to the above austenitizing treatment by annealing in moist hydrogen for 182 hr at 1215°C. In order to achieve a "standard" condition in the austenitic state, all the specimens were transformed to martensite by cooling to - 195°C before the final austenitizing. Both the 0.007 pct C and the decarburized series then had an Mi temperature of about - 30°C. The isothermal martensitic transformation was carried out at a reference temperature of -88"C, and was traced by means of electrical resistance measurements. Each resistance value was normalized by dividing by the resistance of the austenitic specimen at O°C, thus giving a resist- ance ratio R. The rate of decrease of the resistance ratio (-dR/dt) provided a measure of the transformation rate. It was found that a plot of R vs log t at the reference temperature resulted in a slightly curved line which could be closely approximated by two straight lines intersecting at a time of 10 min, as shown in Fig. 1. If G = dR/dlogt is the linear slope of either straight segment, the rate of transformation at any given time is: The ratio of G for 1 less than 10 min to that for t greater than 10 min was 1.19 for the 0.007 pct C series and 1.24 for the decarburized series. These ratios made it possible to compute the transformation rate at any time greater than 10 min, knowing the transformation kinetics prior to 10 min. The stabilization treatment was introduced by up-quenching from the reference temperature, usually after 10 min of isothermal transformation: to one of four stabilizing temperatures between 0" and 22"C. After holding for various times, the specimens were down-quenched to the reference temperature for additional isothermal transformation. In this way, it was possible to compare the transformation rate (- dR/dt), immediately after stabilization with the transformation rate (- dR/dt)U in the unstabilized condition. The degree of stabilization was defined as: Ordinarily, Gs and Gu would be measured after the same time of prim isothermal transformation.

The anthracite industry, which produces about 50 million net tons of coal annually, has been talked of as being able to last for another century; but if the water record of the past century continues into the expected century, this expectation of many years production still to come out of the remaining reserves will not be attained. The industry will be a submerged one in fact as well as in name. A recorded forecast of what has since occurred appears on page 34 of the Mine Inspectors' reports of 1897: It should also be noticed that bodies of water had accumulated in parts of abandoned mines before duplicate surveys of the same were required by law; and as a result we have today to contend with bodies of water, the exact location and position of which are not correctly known. Since that date, 47 years ago, the implications of the foregoing comment have grown enormously. The ahandonment of collieries in this field has imposed additional expense for pumping on the collieries still operating. This condition will be aggravated by the extension of developments and cause suspension of operations if economic conditions do not justify the assumption of additional pumping costs. During the years, the region's rainfall has not altered, but the quantity going inside the mines through breakages in the surface, brought about by extraction of the coal, has increased materially, as indicated by the ratio of tons of water pumped to tons of coal produced underground for one of the large companies in the northern anthracite field: Year Ratio 1920................. 8.4:1 1925.................. 10.6:I I930.................. Aerial photography was once a crude, uncertain tool. Today it is a precision mapping instrument which saves important time and money for strip mining and other industry. Aerial photography began in the boxkite days of aviation. The Army first used it for rough reconnaissance photographs. Then, in the early Twenties, industry began to use aerial photographs of their plants and facilities for advertising or annual reports. The quality of these pictures was not very good by today's standards, but this work began the development of better cameras, better lenses, better photographic techniques.

The Ce-H system was investigated in the temperature range, 573° to 1023°K, and the pressure range, 10-3 to 630 Torr, as a function of 'composition up to 72 at. pct H. Families of isothermal arid isopleth curves were plotted from the pressure-terr~perature-composition relationships. From these curves the solubility relationships were determined for the system. The isopleths are analytically represented by equilibrium dissociation pressure equations. The relative partial molal enthalpzes and entropies of solution of hydvogen in the systerrz were calculated fronz the dissociation pressure equulions and are tabulated. The integral free energies, enthalpies, and entropies of mixing in the Ce-H system were determined from the relative partial quantities and are also tabulated. The standard free energy, enthelpy, and entvopy of reaction of the dihydride phase at kcal per kcal per mole H2, and ?S° = -34. 1 cal per deg mole H2, respectively. The equilibrium dissociation pressure equation in the two-phase region is: UNTIL recently very little was known of the detailed solubility and thermodynamic relationships of the Ce-H system. Two previous investigations1,2 are noteworthy. However, significant discrepancies and omissions exist on analyzing them. The work of Mulford and Holley1 on cerium did not clearly delineate the boundaries of the two-phase region, Cess - CeH2-x. The plateau partial pressures were not thoroughly defined and were considerably displaced in pressure compared to those from the work of Warf and Korst.2 These latter authors concentrated their studies primarily from 823° to 1023°K in the pressure range of 1 to 760 Torr. No data were determined to outline the regions of primary solid solubility and the hydride phase. Also the establishment of the plateau partial pressures was rather limited in scope. In neither work was a treatment conducted of the relative partial molal enthalpies and entropies of solution of hydrogen in the single-phase regions and the integral thermodynamic quantities of mixing throughout the system. Therefore, it was the objective of this research to determine the complete equilibrium solubility relationships and thermodynamic data for the system by pressure-temperature-composition studies. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The cerium metal for this study was donated by the Reno Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines. Total impurity content was 0.13 pct with only 60 ppm O. The metal was checked metallographically and contained only minor amounts of second phase compared to cerium from other sources. Specimen preparation was done in a dry box flushed with argon gas. The surface of a small rectangular piece of cerium (about 0.2 g) was filed with a clean, mill file. Final weighing was done in a tared enclosed vial containing argon gas. The specimen was then loaded quickly into the reaction chamber which was purged several times with high-purity hydrogen gas and then allowed to pump to about 10-6 Torr. The furnace was heated to the reaction temperature and the run started. The equipment used to conduct the hydriding was a Sievert's-type apparatus. Basically it consisted of a source for pure hydrogen, a precision gas-measuring burette, a heated reaction chamber, a McLeod gage, and a mercury manometer. Pure hydrogen was supplied by the thermal decomposition of uranium hydride. The 100-ml precision gas burette was graduated to 0.1-ml divisions and was used to measure the quantity of gas and admit it to the chamber. The reaction chamber was a quartz tube. Prior to each run, the cerium specimen was wrapped in a tungsten foil capsule to prevent reaction of the cerium with the quartz. Control of the temperature was achieved within ±1°K. Pressures in the manometer range were measured to ±0.5 Torr and in the McLeod range (10-3 to 5 Torr) to ±3 pct. The compositions of hydrogen in cerium were calculated in terms of hydrogen to cerium atomic ratio. These compositions were estimated to be ±0.01 H/Ce ratio. The technique used to study the equilibrium pressure-temperature-composition relationships of the Ce-H system was to develop experimentally a family of isothermal curves of composition vs pressure. The range of pressure through which each isotherm was developed was from 10-9 to about 630 Torr in the temperature interval, 573° to 1023°K. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The hydriding characteristics of cerium are iso-morphous with those of the elements of the light-rare-earth group (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, and neodymium) wherein the region from the dihydride to trihydride is continuously single phase.' The structure of this phase is fcc.3 The heavy rare earths form a trihydride,2 which is hcp, separated by a two-phase region from the fcc dihydride phase. The Ce-H system is represented by the family of experimental isotherms in Fig. 1. Due to the small scale required to draw the curves, the experimental points are omitted; however, a total of 240 experimental data points were taken to prepare these curves. The solubility relationships can be deduced therefrom. Three distinct regions of partial pressure and composition can be seen. IN 1939 Bitter and Kaufmann1 suggested that iron, precipitating from a copper-rich, Cu-Fe solid solution, appears initially as coherent particles of r-Fe which transform to the body-centered-cubic form of iron when the alloy is cold worked. Since then there has been considerable discussion, supported only by indirect evidence, regarding the validity of the concept. For example, Reekie, Hutchison, and Hether-ington2 interpreted the changes in electrical resistance accompanying the aging of Cu-Fe specimens in terms of a coherent 7-Fe precipitate which transformed to the incoherent a-phase during long aging or cold working. Greninger- ound that Cu-Fe alloys which had been water quenched from 1050" and then held at 650°C for 3 hr changed from weakly to strongly ferromagnetic as the aged wire was subsequently cold worked. He also found diffraction lines corresponding to body-centered-cubic iron in Debye-Scherrer patterns given by aged and worked specimens but lines corresponding to only one face-centered-cubic phase in specimens which had been aged but not worked. Knoppwost,' and later Cech and Turnbull,5 found that aged Cu-Fe specimens showed a slight increase in ferromagnet-ism after they had be? cooled in liquid nitrogen. Very recently Denney6 followed the kinetics of the precipitation reaction as indicated by the saturation magnetization, hardness, and diffuse X-ray effects. The experimental results reported by all of the authors mentioned above are readily explained in terms of the Bitter and Kaufmann concept. However, most of the evidence is indirect when used to define the structural changes involved. It was the aim of the present investigation to determine the mechanism of precipitation of iron from a Cu-Fe solid solution in the light of available published information and with additional new and more direct experimental data. Experimental Method At 1060°C copper will contain up to 3 atomic pct Fe in equilibrium solid solution.7 The solvus slopes rapidly toward lower iron concentration, so that at 600°C only about 0.5 pct Fe remains in solution at equilibrium. Below the eutectoid temperature (850°C), the iron-rich phase in equilibrium with the copper-rich solid solution consists of body-centered-cubic a-Fe. Above 850 °C the equilibrium iron-rich phase is face-centered-cubic r-Fe. The alloy to be studied was made by melting electrolytic iron and OFHC copper by induction under vacuum in an Alundum-lined crucible. The metal was held molten for about 5 min, after which time the power was turned off and the crucible was tipped about 70" to promote directional solidification. The resulting ingot, containing 2.5 wt pct Fe by analysis, was clean, large grained, and free of gross segregation. Slices % in. thick were cut from the ingot, rolled to 1/8 in. in thickness, homogenized in hydrogen at 1060°C for 24 hr and, finally, quenched in cold water. Specimens for all subsequent tests were made from these slices. Squares measuring about 1 cm on a side were cut from the slices to make specimens for studying hardness and microstructure. Wires (0.020 in.) for the Debye-Scherrer survey were drawn from 1/8 in. sq rods which had been cut from the homogenized slices. THE published work of Lacombe and Beaujard' has demonstrated the interesting application of etch figures to the determination of crystal orientations in aluminum by a purely micrographic method. The geometry of these figures leaves no ambiguity and the method has the added advantage of being applicable to very small crystal units. These authors applied the technique to the study of high purity aluminum, and it has now been adopted buy Heren-guel and his collaborators to various researches on commercial aluminum, containing up to 1 pct Fe and Si. In the study of reactions occurring in liquid iron, alone or in contact with a liquid oxide or slag phase, it has been found that the experimental data over a limited range of concentration can in some cases be represented satisfactorily by the simple equilibrium expression where (P) denotes the concentration of a product and (R) the concentration of a reactant in the reaction r1R1 + r2R2 + • • • D P lP1 + P 2P2 + • • • Some of the reactions for which it holds are listed in Table 1. For others, however, the simple equation apparently does not hold. This has been attributed to an improper method of expressing concentration (for instance, weight per cent instead of mol fraction); or it has been supposed that the solutions are not ideal in the sense that the activity of a component is not proportional to its true mol fraction. But it may be that the problem has been oversimplified by neglecting some molecular species actually present; that is, by considering only the ostensible simple components and thus leaving out of account possible compound formation. It is the purpose of the present paper to point out how, in a group of related cases, a reasonable consistent assumption relative to the presence of a compound makes it possible to express the experimental data satisfactorily by the simple equilibrium expression when this compound is taken into account, and to bring into harmony data referring to different reactions in liquid iron. There are several a priori reasons for believing that solutions in liquid iron should not deviate far from ideality, provided that the concentration of solute is not too great and is expressed in proper terms. The factors that commonly lead to nonideality in systems at ordinary temperature— as ionization or the occurrence of polar and nonpolar molecules—are presumably less effective in inetal and in slag systems at high temperature. M. H. Mueller, M. V. Nevitt, and H. W. Knott (Argonne National Laboratory)—We have reported1 the crystal structure of Ti2CU as body centered tetragonal with a. = 2.944A and co = 10.786A, six atoms per unit cell, and space groupl4/mmm(MoSi2 type). This cell is larger but definitely related to the unit cell reported by the authors. It permits definite positions for the titanium and copper atoms in the cell located as follows: 2 Cu (a) 0 0 0; 1/2 1/2 1/2 4 Ti (e) 0 0 z; 1/2 1/2 1/2 + z; 0 0z; 1/2 1/2 1/2- z where z = 0.341 The face centered tetragonal cell reported by the authors can be transformed to a small body centered tetragonal cell with flo (small bet) = ao(fct)v2 Both unit cells have the same CO. Neither the face centered tetragonal cell with four atoms per unit cell nor the small body centered tetragonal cell with its two atoms per unit cell lend themselves conveniently to an orderly arrangment of the 2 to 1 ratio of titanium to copper atoms. When the co of this small body centered cell is tripled, however, a large body centered tetragonal cell results with six atoms per unit cell as described above. We had also noted that the X-ray patterns of Ti2Cu indicated that the structure could be approximately described by the face centered tetragonal cell as reported by the authors; how- ever, there was evidence for a few additional very weak lines whose positions indicated a larger unit cell. Since the X-ray scattering amplitudes of titanium and copper are nearly equal, it is evident that it is difficult to distinguish their positions especially from X-ray powder patterns. It was therefore decided to look at a powder pattern obtained by neutron diffraction since the scattering amplitudes of the two elements are considerably different in magnitude and opposite in sign. The sample used for neutron diffraction was selected from a group of three alloys prepared by arc melting using crystal bar titanium of 99.92 pet nominal purity and 99.999 pet pure Cu. The alloys designated as A, B, and C had the following respective compositions: Ti-32.8 at. pet Cu, Ti-33.3 at. pet Cu, and Ti-33.8 at. pet Cu. On the basis of the melting losses incurred, it was established that the actual concentration of either component in any of the alloys probably did not deviate from the intended value by as much as 0.1 at. pet. The alloys were annealed for 5 days at 700°C in evacuated Vycor capsules and quenched in tap water. The metallographic structures of these alloys are shown in Fig. 1. None of the alloys contained sufficient second phase to permit its positive identification. Since alloy B contained the least amount of second phase and since its composition placed it closest to the ideal stoichiometry, it was chosen for the neutron diffraction study. The oxygen content of alloy B was found by chemical analysis to be 0.06 at. pet. This particular intermetallic compound is especially suitable for investigation with neutron diffraction since if the titanium and copper atoms have a random statistical distribution, a near null-matrix would result in which there would be practically no coherent scattering of neutrons, and hence no Bragg diffraction peaks. The first catalogue of Geological Reports of the United States was prepared by Prof. 0. C. Marsh, and published in the American Journal of Science and Ark for 1567, vol. xliii, second series. Since then the list has more than doubled, and it was thought that the publication of a new catalogue, brought clown to date, would be useful to many of the members of the Institute of Mining Engineers. The compiler will be most thankful to have any omissions or inaccuracies in the list sent to him, to be published as a supplement in the next volume of the Transactions. Especially to have the correct title, number of pages, plates, and maps of any volume on the list to which an * is prefixed, as he has been unable to personally consult such works. A preliminary list was issued last February, which has been almost doubled by the kindness of many friends.
