Colorado School of Mines The, forty-first annual commencement exercises of the Colorado School of Mines were .held at Golden, Colo., on Friday, May 28, 1915. Dr. Lucien I. Blake delivered an address on Epochs in Science. The degree of Engineer of Mines was conferred upon 30 men, and the degree of Master of Science on one man. At the recent annual meeting of the Mining Engineering Society, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, officers were elected as follows: President, K. M. Sully; Vice-President and Treasurer, D. M. McRae; Secretary, H. Solakian. The Student Auxiliary Society of the A. I. M. E. at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kan., has elected officers as follows for the year 1915-16: President, Harry E. Crum; Vice-President, Leland E. Fiske; Secretary and Treasurer, Ben A. Sweeney.

A study including effects of 7) pH value, 2) fatty acid collector, 3) fuel oil, 4) interfering ion, 5) particle size, and 6) operational variables. Test results indicate feasibility of fatty acid flotation under certain restrictive conditions. FATTY acids have been used as standard collectors for floating the matrix1-8 but not the leached zone phosphate ores. After a series of investigations, Davenport9 and Tarbutton10 concluded that the Florida leached zone ores tested were unamenable to fatty acid flotation and must be upgraded by floating the siliceous gangue with Armac-T as collector. The cationic flotation was estimated11 to cost almost ten times as much as a fatty acid process that would ideally give the same flotation grades and recoveries of phosphates. Mineralization: Extensive deposits of leached zone aluminiferous phosphate occur in Florida."= The ore sample used for this work was obtained from the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corp., Clear Springs area, Florida. The ore is a potential source of uranium and aluminum as well as phosphorus. Since the uranium and the recoverable aluminum are contained in some of the phosphate minerals, an upgrading of phosphate results in a corresponding enrichment of both uranium and aluminum. The phosphate minerals in the ore are primarily pseudo-wavellite, millisite, and carbonate fluorapatite, with a minor amount of wavellite. Quartz and clay are the common gangue minerals, quartz being predominant. Others present in small amounts are ilmenite, hydrated iron oxides, staurolite, monazite, and zircon. Experimental Procedures: After being dried to less than 1 pct surface moisture the material was dry-ground in a Hardinge conical ball mill to —6 mesh. The ground product was classified into 6/20, 20/200, and —200 mesh size fractions. On the basis of Table I, the coarse and fine size fractions were considered as phosphate concentrates, because of their high phosphorus contents. In contrast, the 20/200 mesh fraction, which was low in phosphorus, was used as the flotation feed. All the flotation tests, unless otherwise stated, were performed in a laboratory Fagergren machine under the following conditions: 1) 400 g of solid feed for each test, 2) 2000 rpm impeller speed, 3) 8.9 pH and 4-min conditioning, and 4) 3-min flotation. The procedure used for the quantitative bubble pick-up tests has been described previously.18

IN this paper the effect of natural ventilation pressures is considered a part of the mine resistance and it is shown that their effect on the mine resistance is not the same as the total natural ventilation pressure of the shafts if the mine has several levels. It is shown that increasing the fan pressure causes the division of the air to approach the condition that would obtain if there were no natural ventilation pressure present. It is shown that if an appreciable difference in pressure is maintained between the beginning and end of a group of splits, the value of the integrated effect of the natural ventilation pressures on the individual splits does not change substantially with moderate changes of this pressure. A method is outlined for determining the resistance factor of the mine and the value of the effect of natural ventilation with the fan operating; also a method for determining this factor when circulation is caused by natural ventilation alone. NATURAL VENTILATION PRESSURE Natural ventilation pressure (N.V.P.) is caused by the difference in weight of the air in two similar columns between two horizontal planes, and the difference in weight is caused principally by the difference in temperature of the two columns. The fan pressure causes some variation in density, but, since it is usually small and affects both columns, its effect is relatively unimportant. It has been suggested that "N.V.P." be called "stack effect"; but, since the term N.V.P. was used in a previous Institute paper,' applied in exactly the same manner, the term will be used. FRICTIONAL RESISTANCE The frictional resistance to flow in a mine without natural ventilation may be expressed as RQ2 where R is a constant for a given air density and Q is the rate of flow. This frictional resistance plus the effect of velocity changes will be called the F pressure (F.P.) and a curve of F.P. against Q, the F characteristic of the mine. If a pressure is applied to a mine by a fan, the air flow so adjusts itself that the drop in pressure through any path from entrance to exit of mine, due to frictional resistances and velocity changes, is the same as that in any other path. The mine resistance varies as the square of the quantity. The air distribution without N.V.P. will be called "normal." NATURAL VENTILATION PRESENT When N.V.P. is irregularly distributed in a mine, it is more convenient in analysis to consider the N.V.P. as a part of the duct resistance. If it is so considered the resistance no longer varies as the square of the quantity, and if N.V.P. exists between levels the distribution of the air is no longer normal. The total N.V.P. of the mine is the pressure caused by the full length of the shafts. If a mine has several levels, N.V.P. exists

THE official opening at the 134th general meeting of the Institute was held on Oct. 6, but it was prefaced by two round table conferences on Oct. 5. The open-hearth group held the fourth of their semi-annual conferences at the William Penn Hotel, devoting the morning session to discussing a paper by R. L. Cain on the "Manufacture of Forging Steel by the Open-hearth Process," and the afternoon to discussing P. H. Shaeffer's paper on the open-hearth charge. At the Bureau of Mines, a round table conference on the combustibility of coke was held on Tuesday morning, and the afternoon was devoted to a similar conference on the testing of coke. The formal opening session of the meeting assembled in the Music Hall of Carnegie Institute at 10.30 a. m. Graham Bright, chairman of the Pittsburgh Section; called the meeting to order and presided. President Taylor welcomed the visiting members and guests to his home city and reviewed briefly the advancement of mining in the past half century during which, for ex- ample, the coal output had increased from 53,280,000 tons to 523,357,000 tons per year. He emphasized the important part Pennsylvania played in mining and brought out the principal changes that had taken place in methods. In part, his remarks were as follows: The centennial year, 1876, found the coal business of. this country, as a whole, producing 53,280,000 tons, of which amount the bituminous mines of this State yielded 24 per cent. In 1925, this country produced 523,357,000 tons of coal, of which Pennsylvania produced 24 per cent.

In 1936 the Institute established the Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal, which will be awarded from time to time "for distinguished achievement in improving the technique and practice of finding and producing petroleum." These awards will be sponsored by the Petroleum Division. Captain Lucas was a pioneer in the oil industry, one of the early wildcatters and a leading mining and petroleum engineer. He was famous as the discoverer of Spindletop. He became a member of the Institute in 1895 and in 1913 was the first Chairman of the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the Institute, the forerunner of the present Petroleum Division. He also headed the Committee in 1914, 1917 and 1918. The first medal was presented at the annual dinner in 1937, Feb. 17, to J. Edgar Pew. The kinetics of stabilization have been studied with respect to the isothermal component of the martensitic reaction in ivon-nickel alloys. Although the carbun (or nit-vogen) content may be very low in these alloys, it plays an important vole in the stabilization phenomenon. In fact, if these interstitial elements are removed by moist-hydrogen treatment, no evidence of stabilization is found. In the pvesence of 0.007 wt pct C, the activation energy for the stabilization process is comparable to that -for the diffusion of carbon (or nitrogen) in ferrite) rather than in austenitc. This suggests that the interstitial diffiision controlling the stabilization occurs within the martensitic embryos rather than in the matrix of the parent phase. The kinetics furthev indicate that the interstitial atoms tend to diffuse -from the embryos toward the suvroundings, thereby immobilizing the interface. This appears to be the origin of the stabilizing effect -found in these alloys. PHILIBERT' has shown recently that interstitial elements play an important role in the stabilization of martensitic transformations in iron-base alloys. However, determination of the temperature dependence for this stabilization process has produced values (- 11,000 cal per mol) that cannot be readily identified with the activation energy for diffusion of carbon (or nitrogen) in either ferrite or austenite. In the present work, the isothermal mode of the martensitic reaction was employed to derive the activation energy for stabilization, and this was found to agree fairly well with that for diffusion of carbon (or nitrogen) in ferrite. An iron-nickel alloy with 30.8 wt pct Ni and 0.007 wt pct C was used in these experiments, the specimens being in the form of rods 0.074 in. in diam and 2 1/2 in. long. The specimens were sealed in evacuated vycor tubes and austenitized at 1100°C for 1/2 hr prior to quenching in water. A second series of specimens was decarburized (and denitrogenized) prior to the above austenitizing treatment by annealing in moist hydrogen for 182 hr at 1215°C. In order to achieve a "standard" condition in the austenitic state, all the specimens were transformed to martensite by cooling to - 195°C before the final austenitizing. Both the 0.007 pct C and the decarburized series then had an Mi temperature of about - 30°C. The isothermal martensitic transformation was carried out at a reference temperature of -88"C, and was traced by means of electrical resistance measurements. Each resistance value was normalized by dividing by the resistance of the austenitic specimen at O°C, thus giving a resist- ance ratio R. The rate of decrease of the resistance ratio (-dR/dt) provided a measure of the transformation rate. It was found that a plot of R vs log t at the reference temperature resulted in a slightly curved line which could be closely approximated by two straight lines intersecting at a time of 10 min, as shown in Fig. 1. If G = dR/dlogt is the linear slope of either straight segment, the rate of transformation at any given time is: The ratio of G for 1 less than 10 min to that for t greater than 10 min was 1.19 for the 0.007 pct C series and 1.24 for the decarburized series. These ratios made it possible to compute the transformation rate at any time greater than 10 min, knowing the transformation kinetics prior to 10 min. The stabilization treatment was introduced by up-quenching from the reference temperature, usually after 10 min of isothermal transformation: to one of four stabilizing temperatures between 0" and 22"C. After holding for various times, the specimens were down-quenched to the reference temperature for additional isothermal transformation. In this way, it was possible to compare the transformation rate (- dR/dt), immediately after stabilization with the transformation rate (- dR/dt)U in the unstabilized condition. The degree of stabilization was defined as: Ordinarily, Gs and Gu would be measured after the same time of prim isothermal transformation.

M. H. Mueller, M. V. Nevitt, and H. W. Knott (Argonne National Laboratory)—We have reported1 the crystal structure of Ti2CU as body centered tetragonal with a. = 2.944A and co = 10.786A, six atoms per unit cell, and space groupl4/mmm(MoSi2 type). This cell is larger but definitely related to the unit cell reported by the authors. It permits definite positions for the titanium and copper atoms in the cell located as follows: 2 Cu (a) 0 0 0; 1/2 1/2 1/2 4 Ti (e) 0 0 z; 1/2 1/2 1/2 + z; 0 0z; 1/2 1/2 1/2- z where z = 0.341 The face centered tetragonal cell reported by the authors can be transformed to a small body centered tetragonal cell with flo (small bet) = ao(fct)v2 Both unit cells have the same CO. Neither the face centered tetragonal cell with four atoms per unit cell nor the small body centered tetragonal cell with its two atoms per unit cell lend themselves conveniently to an orderly arrangment of the 2 to 1 ratio of titanium to copper atoms. When the co of this small body centered cell is tripled, however, a large body centered tetragonal cell results with six atoms per unit cell as described above. We had also noted that the X-ray patterns of Ti2Cu indicated that the structure could be approximately described by the face centered tetragonal cell as reported by the authors; how- ever, there was evidence for a few additional very weak lines whose positions indicated a larger unit cell. Since the X-ray scattering amplitudes of titanium and copper are nearly equal, it is evident that it is difficult to distinguish their positions especially from X-ray powder patterns. It was therefore decided to look at a powder pattern obtained by neutron diffraction since the scattering amplitudes of the two elements are considerably different in magnitude and opposite in sign. The sample used for neutron diffraction was selected from a group of three alloys prepared by arc melting using crystal bar titanium of 99.92 pet nominal purity and 99.999 pet pure Cu. The alloys designated as A, B, and C had the following respective compositions: Ti-32.8 at. pet Cu, Ti-33.3 at. pet Cu, and Ti-33.8 at. pet Cu. On the basis of the melting losses incurred, it was established that the actual concentration of either component in any of the alloys probably did not deviate from the intended value by as much as 0.1 at. pet. The alloys were annealed for 5 days at 700°C in evacuated Vycor capsules and quenched in tap water. The metallographic structures of these alloys are shown in Fig. 1. None of the alloys contained sufficient second phase to permit its positive identification. Since alloy B contained the least amount of second phase and since its composition placed it closest to the ideal stoichiometry, it was chosen for the neutron diffraction study. The oxygen content of alloy B was found by chemical analysis to be 0.06 at. pet. This particular intermetallic compound is especially suitable for investigation with neutron diffraction since if the titanium and copper atoms have a random statistical distribution, a near null-matrix would result in which there would be practically no coherent scattering of neutrons, and hence no Bragg diffraction peaks. The relative interfacial energies of symmetrical tilt boundaries in silver of greater than 99.999 pct purity were measured as a function of orientation difference 0 between 9° and 36° about <001>. The results are in good agreement with the dislocation model of the grain boundary. The energy vs H curve may be represented by the Shockley and Read equation in the form Eoe (0.55—In 8). READ&apos; has indicated that an ideal experimental method of testing the predictions of the dislocation theory of the grain boundary would be to measure the interfacial energies of symmetrical tilt boundaries between face-centered-cubic grains that have a common <001> axis, as a function of orientation difference 0. The misfit H should be defined by a rotation of each grain through an angle of H/2 away from the boundary. Such boundaries might be expected, from geometrical considerations, to be made up of a series of edge dislocations, at least for small values of 0. Energy vs H relationships for tin&apos; and lead:&apos; were previously obtained for an asymmetrical tilt boundary separating two grains in which generally only one grain was rotated about a <001> specimen axis through an angle of H away from the boundary, the other grain remaining fixed. It is possible, however, that the boundary atoms in tin and lead may have attained a symmetrical position, in relation to the orientations of the grains on either side of the boundary, during equilibrium annealing. The two sets of measurements on silicon ferrite&apos; were somewhat better suited for comparison with theory, since the boundaries were symmetrical tilt boundaries in which the axis of relative rotation was <110> in the first series and <l00> in the second; but this alloy has a body-centered-cubic structure. Although the grain boundaries in silver" were symmetrically tilted, the axis of relative rotation was not a simple crystallographic direction, and it varied from boundary to boundary. Although the above measurements were in good agreement with the Shockley and Read equation,"&apos;: it appeared desirable to carry out experiments under the ideal conditions specified by Read.&apos; Consequently, the relative energies of symmetrical tilt boundaries in silver between grains that have a common <001> axis were measured. The technique of equilibrating grain boundaries in oriented tricrystals was used rather than the less satisfactory thermal groove method previously employed for silver bicrystals." Experimental Details and Observations The solidification and seeding techniques, described previouslyh for growing tricrystals of controlled orientations, were used to prepare tricrystal specimens from silver of greater than 99.999 pct purity. The silver was obtained from American Platinum Works, Newark, N. J., in the form of poly crystalline rods 10 cm long and 7 mm in diam. These rods were then cold worked by rolling or drawing them into suitably shaped blanks. Single crystal seeds and tricrystals were grown in a high purity graphite boat by means of a movable furnace with globar heating elements. The graphite boat was enclosed in a Vycor tube, which was first evacuated to about l00/u Hg and then filled with a static argon atmosphere. The maximum temperature outside the Vycor tube was 1250°C. A typical tricrystal specimen of silver is shown in Fig. 1. Grains B and C were grown from seed crystals with a <001> specimen axis or longitudinal direction parallel to the direction of growth and with another <001> direction perpendicular to the surface. Each of the two seed crystals was rotated 18" about the <001> specimen axis but in opposite directions away from the boundary. A symmetrical tilt boundary, therefore, separated grains B and C with an orientation difference 8 of 36" about <001>. Grain A in Fig. 1 was grown from the middle seed with a <110> direction parallel to the specimen axis and with a <001> direction inclined at 45&apos; to the surface of the specimen. William Clinton Brown, Brooklyn, N. Y.: The demand for an apparatus for cooling water for condensers, refrigeratingmachinery and air-compressors, as well as water-jacketed furnaces, has led manufacturers to put such an apparatus on the market, so that it is now possible to purchase a cooling-tower, properly designed and constructed, by simply stating the amount of water to be cooled and the temperatures of the hot and the cold water. The principle is similar to that described by Mr. Henrich, but wood is not used in the best apparatus. There are two great objections to wood: First, it cannot last long under the very trying conditions to which it is subjected; and second, it absorbs the organic matter with which water in constant use becomes impregnated, and the resulting odor is very disagreeable. A few days ago I saw a cooling-tower and condenser, built by the Henry R. Worthington Co., in operation at the Edison electric-lighting station in Brooklyn, N. Y., cooling the water for a 700 horse-power condenser. It consisted of a large stack of iron, about 15 feet in diameter by about 30 feet high. This stack was filled with tiling through which the water falls. A whirligig distributes the water evenly over the top, and a large fan, about 6 feet in diameter, driven by a 10 horse-power electric motor, blows air into the bottom, thus giving a positive circulation. The water, in running down the sides of the tiling, is met by the blast of air, and enough is evaporated to cool the rest. The vacuum-gauge on the condenser showed 26 inches; so the condenser was undoubtedly getting sufficient cool water.

The anthracite industry, which produces about 50 million net tons of coal annually, has been talked of as being able to last for another century; but if the water record of the past century continues into the expected century, this expectation of many years production still to come out of the remaining reserves will not be attained. The industry will be a submerged one in fact as well as in name. A recorded forecast of what has since occurred appears on page 34 of the Mine Inspectors&apos; reports of 1897: It should also be noticed that bodies of water had accumulated in parts of abandoned mines before duplicate surveys of the same were required by law; and as a result we have today to contend with bodies of water, the exact location and position of which are not correctly known. Since that date, 47 years ago, the implications of the foregoing comment have grown enormously. The ahandonment of collieries in this field has imposed additional expense for pumping on the collieries still operating. This condition will be aggravated by the extension of developments and cause suspension of operations if economic conditions do not justify the assumption of additional pumping costs. During the years, the region&apos;s rainfall has not altered, but the quantity going inside the mines through breakages in the surface, brought about by extraction of the coal, has increased materially, as indicated by the ratio of tons of water pumped to tons of coal produced underground for one of the large companies in the northern anthracite field: Year Ratio 1920................. 8.4:1 1925.................. 10.6:I I930.................. In a study of the influence of cold rolling on mechani cal properties of steel, it was found that the specific rolling procedure influenced crystallographic orientation. Properties developed by several rolling modes were determined and related to crystallographic orientation. Sanzples were cold-rolled various amounts on a laboratory mill. When palm oil was used as a lubricant, the crystallographic orientation was homogeneous throughout the thickness of the samples. Other samples were rolled without lubrication. Variations in intensity of the recrystallization texture components persisted throughout more than 50 pct of the volume of these samples. When the average plastic strain ratio, which is dependent upon crystallogvaphic orientation, was plotted as a function of percent reduction, a maximum was found at 40 pct in the samples which contained the observed texture variation. No maximum was found for the samples with the homogeneous texture distribution. Other mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and yield strength, were not influenced by the variation in crystallopaphic orientation. MECHANICAL properties of steel sheets depend, in general, upon the structural properties of the steel. For example, the Petch equation describes the relationship between yield strength and grain size. Other properties, such as hardness, vary with chemical composition. The plastic strain ratio, or R value, has been found to be dependent upon crystallographic orientation . In the course of investigating the effect of cold rolling on mechanical properties, it was found that a previously reported relationship between percent cold reduction and R value was not always observed. Published data had shown that the optimum cold reduction for best R values is 70 pct for aluminum killed steel.&apos; However, by altering the rolling conditions, the optimum reduction can be shifted to much lower values, or it can be moved to very high values. This paper describes the rolling conditions that lead to shifting of the optimum cold reduction. The effect of rolling conditions on the various structure parameters and the resulting mechanical properties are evaluated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Samples of three low-carbon aluminum killed steels were cold-rolled various amounts on a 9-in.-diam 2-high laboratory mill. Hot-mill thermal practice and steel chemistries are listed in Table I. Steel A was rolled with palm oil lubrication and heavy reductions on each pass; i.e., a total reduction of 75 pct was ac- complished with a maximum of five passes. Steel B was rolled without lubrication, and light reductions were given on each pass. After approximately 75 pct reduction, it was necessary to use a small amount of light oil to achieve any additional reduction in thickness. Following cold reduction, the samples were box-annealed at 1300°F for 10 hr. The heating rate between 800" and 1300°F was 50°F per hr, and the cooling rate following the soak period was 50°F per hr. Tensile specimens were machined from the annealed material and these were used to measure yield strength, tensile strength, and the plastic strain ratio (R value). Recrystallization textures were determined by an inverse pole figure technique.*&apos;3 Integrated intensities of the (110), (002), (112), and (222) reflections were recorded for those planes lying parallel to the sheet surface. Examinations were made on both surfaces of each sample, and also at various levels beneath each surface to approximately 0.010 in. depth by etching techniques. RESULTS R Values. The R values obtained in steels A and B are shown as a function of percent cold reduction in Fig. 1. No optimum cold reduction was observed in steel A, rolled with palm oil lubrication. It is likely, however, that an optimum reduction would have occurred had higher reductions than 88 pct been employed. The optimum reduction in steel B occurred at 40 pct. IN 1939 Bitter and Kaufmann1 suggested that iron, precipitating from a copper-rich, Cu-Fe solid solution, appears initially as coherent particles of r-Fe which transform to the body-centered-cubic form of iron when the alloy is cold worked. Since then there has been considerable discussion, supported only by indirect evidence, regarding the validity of the concept. For example, Reekie, Hutchison, and Hether-ington2 interpreted the changes in electrical resistance accompanying the aging of Cu-Fe specimens in terms of a coherent 7-Fe precipitate which transformed to the incoherent a-phase during long aging or cold working. Greninger- ound that Cu-Fe alloys which had been water quenched from 1050" and then held at 650°C for 3 hr changed from weakly to strongly ferromagnetic as the aged wire was subsequently cold worked. He also found diffraction lines corresponding to body-centered-cubic iron in Debye-Scherrer patterns given by aged and worked specimens but lines corresponding to only one face-centered-cubic phase in specimens which had been aged but not worked. Knoppwost,&apos; and later Cech and Turnbull,5 found that aged Cu-Fe specimens showed a slight increase in ferromagnet-ism after they had be? cooled in liquid nitrogen. Very recently Denney6 followed the kinetics of the precipitation reaction as indicated by the saturation magnetization, hardness, and diffuse X-ray effects. The experimental results reported by all of the authors mentioned above are readily explained in terms of the Bitter and Kaufmann concept. However, most of the evidence is indirect when used to define the structural changes involved. It was the aim of the present investigation to determine the mechanism of precipitation of iron from a Cu-Fe solid solution in the light of available published information and with additional new and more direct experimental data. Experimental Method At 1060°C copper will contain up to 3 atomic pct Fe in equilibrium solid solution.7 The solvus slopes rapidly toward lower iron concentration, so that at 600°C only about 0.5 pct Fe remains in solution at equilibrium. Below the eutectoid temperature (850°C), the iron-rich phase in equilibrium with the copper-rich solid solution consists of body-centered-cubic a-Fe. Above 850 °C the equilibrium iron-rich phase is face-centered-cubic r-Fe. The alloy to be studied was made by melting electrolytic iron and OFHC copper by induction under vacuum in an Alundum-lined crucible. The metal was held molten for about 5 min, after which time the power was turned off and the crucible was tipped about 70" to promote directional solidification. The resulting ingot, containing 2.5 wt pct Fe by analysis, was clean, large grained, and free of gross segregation. Slices % in. thick were cut from the ingot, rolled to 1/8 in. in thickness, homogenized in hydrogen at 1060°C for 24 hr and, finally, quenched in cold water. Specimens for all subsequent tests were made from these slices. Squares measuring about 1 cm on a side were cut from the slices to make specimens for studying hardness and microstructure. Wires (0.020 in.) for the Debye-Scherrer survey were drawn from 1/8 in. sq rods which had been cut from the homogenized slices. RECENT studies by Smith and Olney,1,2 Olney,3 Greifer and Salli,4 Rys etal., and Olney and smith 6 have established that graphite is the first decomposition product to format the surface of hypereutectoid plain-carbon steels when they are austenitized in a vacuum or inert atmosphere and slowly cooled. This graphite evidently forms directly from the austenite and only at the surface of the specimen. The interior of the specimen is found to be free of graphite. The graphite layer can almost completely cover the specimen surface and the rate of its formation is markedly sensitive to the orientation of the austenite. The present work was undertaken to study this phenomenon further, especially with regard to the effect of temperature and austenite orientation. The material studied in this work was a high-purity iron-carbon alloy containing 0.88 pct C, 0.005 pct Mn, 0.016 pct Si, 0.005 pct S, and 0.002 pct P. Specimens were heat-treated in a commercial hot stage modified for rapid quenching.7 This permitted direct observation of the formation of the surface graphite. A vacuum of 10"" to 10-5 mm of Hg prevented oxidation or decarburization of the specimens. Specimens were austenitized for 30 min at 1100°C and quenched to a series of lower temperatures where they were isothermally transformed. Surface graphite was observed to form at 700°, 750°, and 780°C but not at 825°, 900° or 1000°C. Since the maximum solubility of austenite for graphite is 0.88 pct C at 800°C,8 surface graphite only forms at tem-

The first catalogue of Geological Reports of the United States was prepared by Prof. 0. C. Marsh, and published in the American Journal of Science and Ark for 1567, vol. xliii, second series. Since then the list has more than doubled, and it was thought that the publication of a new catalogue, brought clown to date, would be useful to many of the members of the Institute of Mining Engineers. The compiler will be most thankful to have any omissions or inaccuracies in the list sent to him, to be published as a supplement in the next volume of the Transactions. Especially to have the correct title, number of pages, plates, and maps of any volume on the list to which an * is prefixed, as he has been unable to personally consult such works. Annealed Fe-Al alloys do not react readily to form AlN when held at 500ºC in NH3-H2 gas mixtures, but do so upon the introduction of dislocatims. Nuclea-tion of the nitride phase occurs on dislocation sites. In turn, the growth of the aluminum nitride particles causes the ferrite phase to yield plastically, generating more dislocations for the nucleation process. The nitride phase extracted from an Fe-2 pct A1 alloy nitrogenated at 500°C was identified as stoichio-metric aluminum nitride with a hexagonal crystal lattice. THIS investigation reveals the role that dislocations play in initiating and sustaining the nitriding reaction in Fe-A1 alloys. As early as 1931 the work of Meyer and Hobrock1 suggested that the initiation of the nitriding reaction could involve a nucleation controlled process. Recently Bohnenka2 depicted the gas-phase nitriding process below 600°C as one of mixed control limited by nitrogen penetration through the surface, by nitrogen diffusion, by aluminum diffusion, and by nucleation of the nitride phase, Fig. l(a). In our research in a comparable alloy (0.57 pct Al) at 575ºC, we have observed a nitrogenation which we feel is better described by Fig. l(b). In the case of a 2 pct-A1 alloy partially nitrided at 500°C we propose the profiles shown in Fig. l(c). For a complete and accurate description of the process, a concentration profile of the dislocation density in the test specimen would be needed. EXPERIMENTAL Nitrogenization was conducted between 500" and 575°C in a variety of NH3-H2 gas mixtures on three Fe-A1 alloys: 1) zone-refined iron + 0.16 i 0.2 pct Al—levita-tion melt, 2) zone-refined iron + 0.57 0.02 pct Al— levitation melt, 3) plastiron + 2 pct Al—melted by induction heating. To demonstrate the effect of dislocations on reactivity, both cold-worked and annealed samples were investigated. All nitrogenation rate studies were conducted gravimetrically with a gold-plated invar balance4 contained in a gas-flow system. To avoid contamination of the specimens in the reaction zone of the system, the reaction chamber was constructed of high-purity dense alumina. The activity of nitrogen was fixed by specific NH3-H2 gas mixtures whose compositions were continually monitored by calibrated thermal conductivity gages and checked by chemical analysis. Variations of ± 0.1 pct NH3 could easily be detected by both methods. Throughout this paper the activity of nitrogen is defined as PN3 /PH23/2 , where PNH3, and Ph2 are partial pressures in atmospheres. Electron transmission, density measurements, and chemical analyses were made on specimens before and after nitrogenating in order to reveal structural and chemical changes. Similar studies as well as X-ray diffraction studies were conducted on nitride extractions from the nitrogenated 2 pct-A1 alloy. These extractions were obtained by the use of an anhydrous bromine-methyl acetate solution which dissolves the iron and leaves the insoluble nitrides as a residue. Hardness profiles were obtained on cross-sections of partially nitrided specimens to demonstrate the extent of nitriding through the thickness of the specimens. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The nitrogen activity in the NH3-H2, atmospheres was never allowed to reach a level capable of producing iron nitride (Fe4N). Hence, the term nitriding as used in this paper refers only to the formation of aluminum nitride whereas nitrogenation refers to the total uptake of nitrogen regardless of how it is distributed throughout the alloy. The weight increases observed during the initial stage of a nitrogenating treatment are due primarily to the solution of nitrogen in the ferrite phase, particularly when starting with annealed specimens. Because this initial nitrogenation rate in the case of the 0.57 pct A1 alloy, see Figs. 2 and 3(a), was most rapid the weight change that occurred thereafter might be attributed to the nitriding reaction with the exception of a small weight increment due to the irreversible pickup of oxygen by aluminum. The oxygen (<70 ppm) came from traces of H2O and 0, in the hydrogen and ammonia gases. On the basis of discrepancies between total weight increase and the increase in the nitrogen content of the sample as determined by chemical analysis, it was estimated and later established by activation analysis, that as much as 200 ppm of oxygen were taken up by a fully nitrided Fe-0.57 pct A1 specimen at 575°C. Most of the oxygen could have been picked up from the nitriding atmosphere on the surface of the samples during cooling to room temperature. Even 50 ppm of water in the gas phase will become oxidizing to iron before the sample has cooled to room temperature. The lack of reactivity* of these alloys in the annealed

Aerial photography was once a crude, uncertain tool. Today it is a precision mapping instrument which saves important time and money for strip mining and other industry. Aerial photography began in the boxkite days of aviation. The Army first used it for rough reconnaissance photographs. Then, in the early Twenties, industry began to use aerial photographs of their plants and facilities for advertising or annual reports. The quality of these pictures was not very good by today&apos;s standards, but this work began the development of better cameras, better lenses, better photographic techniques.

Practical miscible displacement processes will be characterized by lingering of the solvent into the oil. The lingering process is brought on by viscosity differences, and can be accentuated by channeling and longitudinal dispersion. The effects of these factors on the efficiency of unstable completely miscible displacements are combined in what is called the K-factor method. This method, analogous to the Buckley-Leverett method, predicts recovery and solvent cut as a function of pore volumes of solvent injected. Experimental data are included and show excellent agreement with theory for a wide variety of sandstone cores and viscosity ratios. INTRODUCTION Theoretical considerations,1 laboratory experiments,2 and pilot tests3 lead to the conclusion that miscible displacements in the field will be unstable In an unstable miscible displacement, the solvent fingers through the oil. This fingering leads to early breakthrough of the solvent and an extended period during which both oil and solvent are produced. For such a system, there appear to be four principal factors which bring about or accentuate the effects of instability: longitudinal dispersion (including geometrical effects), channeling, viscosity differences and gravity differences. Other factors, such as diffusion and flooding rate, can also influence the effects of instability, but at the flooding rates considered in this report, circa 15 ft/D, they are unimportant. Longitudinal dispersion can be thought of as a spreading of the solvent front caused by the presence of microscopic inhomogeneities. Channeling of the solvent occurs when a porous medium has macroscopic inhomogeneities; i.e., gross permeability variations. Viscosity differences lead to fingering of the less viscous solvent. This difference in viscosity accelerates the growth of fingers along paths previously developed because of permeability variations. Gravity differences lead to overriding by the usually less dense solvent. Al- though gravity effects are generally small at a flooding rate of 15 ft/D, they would, nevertheless, unnecessarily complicate the interpretation of flooding experiments. For this reason, all the experiments reported herein were done with matched density fluids. Fingering and the resultant poor areal sweep were recognized early as the dominant influences on the efficiency and the economics of miscible displacement processes. Much research effort has been spent on ways to minimize fingering and increase areal sweep such as the use of graded viscosity slugs4 or water slugs. Some researchers attempted to work out ways to prevent fingering completely; i.e., to achieve a stable displacement through gravity or latitudinal dispersion stabilization. l Others did not attempt to control fingering but obtained an economic process by merely recycling the solvent and sweeping pattern by pattern.6 During this period, all aspects of fingering came under close scrutiny. Some researchers reported on how fingering looks2 and how it is affected by viscosity ratio,7 geometry,7 and slug size.2,* Peaceman and Rachfordg suggested a mathematical approach to the prediction of unstable miscible displacements in relatively homogeneous sand packs, but their work cannot be extended conveniently to heterogeneous systems. Hence for a heterogeneous system, no method is presently available for predicting solvent cut and recovery as functions of pore volumes of solvent injected. The purpose of this investigation was to attempt to fill in the gap in our knowledge concerning the prediction of performance of unstable miscible dis placements. Necessarily, the system selected for study was a relatively simple one. The restrictions placed on the system were: (1) The system was linear; (2) The solvent was miscible in all proportions with the oil in place; (3) The solvent was continuously injected into the porous medium; (4) Gravitational effects were eliminated by matching densities and (5) All the flood rates were high and constant at 15 ft/D to avoid any small rate effect and to minimize any diffusion effects. To simplify and to indicate that both longitudinal dispersion and channeling arise from permeability variations, the effects which they cause or influence have been termed heterogeneity effects. The use of
