Polonis,and R Taggart (Uuivevsity of Washington)—Dispersion hardening in titanium-copper alloys is of particular interest to us in view of our current research activities in phase transformations in this system. We should like to raise questions concerning several points in the paper. The flow sheet for fabrication and heat treatment (Authors' Fig. 2) indicates that 0.045 in sheet is treated in air for a period of 30 min at 1625' F. Were any surface coatings used to reduce oxygen contamination at this stage? One might ask the same question about the 8-hr annealing at 1400F. Contamination during fabrication and heat treatment of such thin sections could be considerable without some protection. Although the authors state that no analyses were made, they note that contamination masks the distinction between base strengths of the different alloys. In this connection, what fabrication and heat-treatment procedures were used in obtaining the comparison specimens of unalloyed titanium? It would seem that oxygen contamination must cast doubt on the reliability of the proposed strength-mean free path relationship deduced from the data (Authors' Fig. 5). It is usual to evaluate dispersion hardening on the basis of yield strength rather than ultimate tensile strength, and accordingly we have replotted the authors' Fig. 1 to include yield strength. The yield strength data do not justify a discontinuity of 3 p at either 70" or 1000 OF. Can the authors substantiate their conclusion 1) with additional evidence? Otherwise it seems that they have succeeded only in pointing out the possibility of a linear relationship between yield strength (or Uts) and the logarithm of the nleall free path, comparable with that demonstrated for iron-carbon alloys (Authors' Ref. 2). Work in our own laboratories has shown that the hardness of the phase Ti,Cu is 235 Vpn, and that of a 1.5 pct (at.) (2 pct wt) supersaturated solid solution of copper in titanium is 190 Vpn. This small difference in hardness would suggest that Ti2Cu should not be a very effective dispersion-hardening phase. D. N. Williams, R. W. Wood, H. R Ogden, RI. Laboratory data on bubble point pressures and reservoir volume factors have been correlated as functions of solution gas-oil ratio, calculated gas gravity of the pentanes-and-lighter fraction of the entire fluid, differential residual oil gravity, and reservoir temperatures. INTRODUCTION Several correlations of crude oil properties have appeared in the literature. D. L. Katz4 in 1942 presented five methods of predicting oil shrinkage. these being of decreasing accuracy for decreasing amounts of information available. M. B. Standing- in 1947 published three correlations of laboratory flash vaporization data of California crudes. From values of GOR (gas-oil ratio), gas gravity, liquid gravity, and temperature, his correlations will predict bubble point pressure, formation volumes of bubble point liquids, and two-phase formation volumes. Curtis and Brinkley2 in 1949 presented several correlations. From the gas-oil ratio, an approximation of reservoir volume factor and barrels of condensate recoverable per barrel of reservoir space may be obtained; along with liquid gravity and reservoir temperature, the GOR will allow prediction of bubble point pressure. These last cor- relations seem to be more qualitative than quantitative. Generally, laboratory bottom hole sample tests furnish information on solution gas-oil ratios, residual oil gravities. bubble point pressures, viscosities of oils, liquid shrinkages, and occasionally gas gravities. Each of these data has its own applications and use in reservoir engineering calculations. The particular uses of correlated bottom hole sample data are found in (1 Providing a basis for obtaining estimates of formation crude properties in fields where bottom hole sampling is impractical or impossible. (2) Greatly reducing the time in obtaining the desired information. (3) Determining the applicability of the results from various bottom hole samples to particular field problems. (4) Avoiding, in many cases, the uncertainties of sampling by replacing it with an element over which greater control can be exercised. (5) Permitting use of preliminary field data in application of production procedures before a bottom hole sample can be obtained and analyzed in the laboratory. (6) Serving as a check on data which may appear out of line. (7) Estimating for a particular type crude the appropriate equilibrium constants by working backward from the bubble point pressure. (8) Estimating original or other past history properties of reservoirs that were not sampled in the past. PROCEDURE Application of the published correlations4,6 to Stanolind laboratory data indicated that the general scheme presented by Standing" could give dedrable results if changes were made in parameter positions and scales. The correlation curves were drawn with all the variables having consistent gradations except the temperature increments which were drawn in to best fit the data. The variables from available Stanolind laboratory data are defined below: (1) Gas-oil Ratio: Gas is liberated at reservoir temperature by differential vaporization (or rather by a series of flashes, approaching differential vaporization) and measured at atmospheric pressure and temperature, at which the compressibility factor is assumed to be unity. The oil is the residual liquid remaining after the pressure has been reduced to atmospheric. For the gas-oil ratio both volumes are corrected to standard conditions of 14.7 psia and 60°F. (2) Gas Gravity: It was decided to arbitrarily divide the hydrocarbons of the entire bottom hole sample into pentanes-and-lighter and hex-anes-and-heavier, and use a calculated gas gravity of the pentanes-and-lighter for a correlating variable. (Sample calculation is shown in Table 111.) (3) Liquid Gravity: This is the API gravity of the residual liquid from the differential vaporization. The gravity is measured at room temperature and corrected to 60°F.

Prior to Sept. 1, 1928, there had never been constructed what might be termed a long pipe line with electric-welded field joints. A year later more than 2500 miles of electric-welded lines had been completed which varied in diameter from 6 to 20 in., and in length from 50 to 700 miles. This paper discusses methods used on five lines with a total length of about 750 miles. The welding equipment used for the firing line or rolling welds, was 300-amp. generators driven with six-cylinder gasoline engines, and for the bell-hole or tie-in welds, 200-amp. generators driven by four-cylinder gasoline engines. A welding gang consisted of a foreman, 6 to 12 firing-line welders and 2 to 4 bell-hole welders, a mechanic and a tractor driver. Coupons about 1/4 in. thick were frequently cut from completed welds, which showed a cross-section of the weld and an indication of its size and penetration. For tests of tensile strength complete welds were cut out. The tensile strength of 52 welds cut from 420 miles of 12-in. line averaged 50,870 Ib. per square inch. The following results give a fair average of the number of welds made per man per day: on 157 miles of 8-in. line both firing-line and hell-hole welds averaged 15.3—the firing-line average was 21; on 39 miles of 10-in. line the firing-line average was 19.9; on 50 miles of 6-in. line, with unfavorable weather, the average was 17.7; on 424 miles of 12-in. line most of which was welded during the spring, 10.3, and with good weather the average rose to 13 welds per day. The average time for making a complete weld on 12-in. pipe 0.313 in. thick was found to be 30 min. for the rolling weld and 45 min. for tie-in welds. A comparison of costs between electric and gas welding shows that the cost of labor for electric welding is 25 per cent. more than gas, generating cost 61 per cent. less than gas, welding wire 40 per cent. less than gas, and supervision and overhead the same. The influence of partial decomposition to high temperature bainite on reaction kinetics at a lower temperature has been studied in two alloy steels. Reaction at the lower temperature is retarded by the prior treatment, and the extent of decomposition may be reduced. Interpretation of these results is based on a mechanism involving a limitation in the nucleation and growth of bainite plates. OF the major transformations in steel, the characteristics and general behavior of the bainite reaction are probably the least understood and appreciated. Limitations of space preclude a critical evaluation of the present status of the bainite transformation in this presentation; however, such a treatment will shortly appear elsewhere. Only the salient features pertinent to the present investigation will be introduced briefly here. Although the reaction curve for the formation of bainite is similar to that for a nucleation and growth process, other kinetic features are more in keeping with the martensitic mode of transformation. A definite temperature exists above which austenite will not transform to bainite.1-5 his temperature, which has been designated B., is determined by the composition of the austenite. Unlike other nucleation and growth processes, the amount of austenite transformed to .bainite is a function of reaction temperature. The extent of decomposition increases from 0 at H. to 100 pct at some lower temperature.' , This lower temperature will be designated B1 and appears to be relatively insensitive to austenite composition.% 5 The similarity in the effect of reaction temperature on the bainite and martensite transformations serves to emphasize the close connection between these two decomposition processes. Austenite decomposition in the bainite range proceeds without partition of the alloying elements.8-11 Partition of carbon has been proposed" primarily on the basis that partial transformation to bainite lowers M, and increases the amount of austenite retained at room temperature. Carbon enrichment resuslting from such partition has been employed to explain the influence of reaction temperature on the extent of decomposition.'" It should be noted, however, that no enrichment has been detected experimentally in high carbon steels.1,14,15 Lattice-parameter measurements of retained austenite in steels containing 0.3 to 0.4 pct C have indicated carbon enrichment, 3,10-18 although the split indicative of a high carbon martensite has not been reported. Carbon enrichment, if it does occur, must be highly localized around the bainite plates. Therefore, carbon enrichment does not account for the influence of temperature on the progress of the bainite reaction."' Thermal history is known to influence the martensite transformation through stabilization.20,21 No similar phenomenon in the bainite transformation has been reported. Materials and Procedure Two triple-alloy steels were chosen for this investigation. Their compositions were as given in Table I. These steels were chosen because the pearlite reaction did not interfere with the bainite reaction. Steel K was received in the cast condition and forged from 2 in. square bars to 1/2 x1 3/4 in. plates. The 4340 was received as 11/4 in. hot-rolled rounds. Both steels were homogenized in vacuum for one week at 2300°F in order to minimize segregation. A quenching dilatometer similar to that described by Flinn, Cook, and Fellows" was employed for the kinetic measurements. Dimensional changes were detected by a differential transformer coupled with a high speed recorder. The dilatometer was mounted so that it could be transferred to any one of three furnaces: a nitrogen-atmosphere austenitiz-ing furnace and two salt-bath furnaces for isothermal transformation. Dilatometer specimens were 1/32 x 1/4x 1/2 in. with a gage length of 1.4 in. All specimens were nickel plated in order to minimize decarburization during austenitizing. The austenitiz-ing conditions consisted of 10 min at the temperatures given above. Austenitizing temperatures were controlled to 210°F and transformation temperatures to ±3ºF. The precision of the dimensional measurements was estimated to be ± 5 x105 in. per in. Some statements have already been made to the Institute in reference to the cost of other departments of the above-named works, and some details have been given in tabular form.* For the purpose of the present paper it may be sufficient to say that this converting works is made up of three buildings, a cupolahouse, an engine-house, and a converting-house. The machinery and fixtures comprise two blowing-engines, two pressure-pumps, two five-ton converters, five hydraulic cranes, three pig-iron cupolas, four spiegel cupolas, two lifts for the cupolas, together with the usual arrangements of smaller parts. Every effort was made in the construction to combine efficiency of operation with durability, and the general course of the operation of the works during two and a half years seems to warrant the belief that the large outlay has been fully justified. * In the accompanying tabular statement all items on vouchers less than ten dollars, and all freight items have been omitted.

Microstructure, magnetic torque, and texture data before and after grain growth were obtained on two 3.25 pet Si-Fe specimens having initially the same cold-rolled textures and the same primary recrystallization textures. The latter textures consisted of four components, two only of which were strong; the strong components were near (120) [001] and (320) [001]. The textures of the two specimens obtained by grain growth were different. In one specimen the two weak components were converted into strong components by a secondary recrystallization process; in the other specimen the primary recrystallization texture was retained by a normal grain-growth process. The difference in behavior of the two specimens was interpreted in terms of a difference in the relative grain sizes between weak and strong components; i.e., in terms of a geometrical factor that would alter the early growth rates of grains belonging to the two weak components of the texture. Specifically the growth rate was considered as the product of two terms: a driving force and a boundary mobility. The texture changes observed are considered to favor the oriented-nucleation growth-selectivity theory more than the oriented-growth theory. WHEN primary recrystallization and grain-growth textures form as a result of annealing deformed metals or alloys, the fundamental processes involved are nucleation and growth. Knowledge, therefore, about nuclei and the factors influencing their growth is required not only for the understanding of texture development but also for its control. In the oriented-growth theory of texture formation1, 2, 3 the problem of nuclei is generally disposed of by the assumption that nuclei are available in all orientations; the theory then has to explain the final texture from the initial texture and the way boundary mobility depends on orientation. In the oriented nucleation theory of texture formation"' nuclei are considered to be present only in certain orientations but the importance of growth selectivity is still recognized. For example, the mobility of boundaries of approximately the same orientation and of the coherent type in twins is believed to be low while that of high-angle boundaries, in general, is high. Because of this the theory may be described as an oriented-nucleation growth-selectivity theory. The main feature of the oriented-nucleation theory, however, is the importance given to nuclei; i.e., how they form in specific orientations and how they grow. In the present investigation two cold-rolled single crystals were used to study the effects of growth after primary recrystallization. The cold-rolled textures and the primary recrystallization textures were determined from portions of these specimens and reported earlier.",' The two cold-rolled crystals were in the (111) [112] stable end orientation, the recrystallization textures were nearly identical and consisted of two strong components, designated M and M', which were near (120) [00l] and (320) [00l], respectively, and also some specific weak components near (111) [110] and (111) [110]. It is well recognized that a single strong component in the primary recrystallization texture may be needed for secondary recrystallization3, 5, 8 but unfortunately when this is the case the amount of material left in deviating orientation may be too small either for growth or for positive identification. The present samples proved to be almost ideal for the study of minor components and their influence on texture changes produced by growth after primary recrystallization. The results obtained are interpreted in terms of present knowledge of grain-growth processes. Experimental Procedure Two lots of silicon-iron alloy of essentially the same composition, namely, 3.25 pet Si, 0.004 C, 0.009 P, 0.010 S, 0.035 Mn, 0.070 Ni, 0.090 Cu, 0.009 Sn, with traces of A1 and Cr and the balance Fe, were converted into single crystals 0.025 in. thick and 1.25 in. wide. The orientations were predetermined by the method of reorienting a seed crystal as described elsewhere.3 pecimen 1 from one lot had the (335) [556] orientation while specimen 2 from the second lot had the (111) [112] orientation.* Both crystals were cold rolled to a reduction in thickness of 70 pet while widening approximately 20 pet. INTRODUCTION At the end of the day, the decision by the sponsor to proceed with a project and to seek financing, or the decision by the financier to grant financing are made on a judgmental basis. Cash flow projections, sensitivity and risk analysis, the innumerable ratios applied by the financier, the so-called feasibility study, etc. are all only tools, and the degree to which they affect decisions is as highly varied as are the personality differences and business conduct and outlooks of the persons who render the decision of "go or no-go". The independent consultant, then, is expected to provide an additional increment of credulity and/or reliability to the "tools" which others will use in reaching a decision; the consultant is really not in a position to directly recommend a "go or no-go". PROJECT FINANCE INGREDIENTS The project finance situation has basically three ingredients: - The project; - The inherent risks attendant with project failure; - The parties. The project, to be viable for financing, will have certain essential characteristics, namely: 1. Clear title or rights to the mineral; 2. Proven definition/establishment of mineral quantity; 3. Financial viability; 4. Physical access consistent with financial viability; 5. A market for the product at a price and for the quantity consistent with financial viability; 6. Transportation/shipping from the project facility to the market at a cost consistent with financial viability; 7. Availability and demonstrated expertise of the developer of the facility; 8. Demonstrated expertise of the operator of the facility; 9. Production processes do not involve unproven new technology; 10. Availability of management personnel; 11. The property and the facilities have value (and thus can be used as collateral); 12. Government approvals/support, as required, will have been obtained; 13. The political environment is essentially friendly and stable; 14. The owner(s) of the project have the financial, strength to make equity contributions consistent with total required investment capital and project risk; 15. Backing by credit support other than that of the financier (i.e. guarantees); The inherent risks of failure are (Nevitt, 2nd Edition); 1. Completion delays with consequent delays in the generation of revenue 2. Cost overruns 3. Technical failure 4. Financial failure of contractors 5. Government interference 6. Uninsured losses 7. Increased price or shortages of raw materials, supplies 8. Technical obsolescence 9. Loss of competitive position in the market place 10. Expropriation 11. Inadequate/poor management The parties directly or indirectly integral to the project financing are: - The mineral rights owner - The developer - The operator - The equity investor

BACKOFEN' reported recently that "the deformation texture of cold-drawn OFHC copper wire, after a reduction in area of 97.3 pct, may still be described as a composite of [lll.] and [loo] directions aligned parallel to the wire axis." In the introduction, he indicated that this was in contrast to the work of Hibbard,' who reported a single [111] texture after a reduction of 96.4 pct. Unfortunately Backofen stated that this was a reduction in area when actually it was a reduction in diameter, as is clearly stated in the reference. Moreover, the results of Backofen are in complete agreement with the results of Hibbard. Backofen's 97.3 pct reduction in area is an 83.3 pct reduction in diameter, after which he foundadouble [ll11 and[l001texture with the former predominating. Similarly, Hibbard; after an 86 pct reduction in diameter found a double [Ill] and [I001 texture with the former predom- inating. Hibbard, however, when he drew the wire further to 96.4 pct reduction in diameter, found primarily a single [Ill1 texture as illustrated by Fig. 2 of ref. 3. Here also, Hibbard- reported evidences of the [loo] recrystallization texture found by Backofen. It might also be pointed out that Backofen not only drew his wire 97.3 pct reduction in area but also etched them over 99 pct reduction in area from 0.125 to 0.01 in. diam. Hibbard's wires were drawn directly to size. In summary, the deformation texture of cold-drawn copper wire still may be described as primarily a single Clll] texture after a sufficient amount of drawing, such as 96.4 pct reduction in diameter." a

INTRODUCTION Situated 23 miles east of Pretoria the Premier Mine started diamond production in 1903. Two years later it produced the largest diamond yet discovered, the 3 106 carat Cullinan stone. For the period to 1932 when the mine was closed down due to economic circumstances, open cast mining was practised using inclined rope haulage traction and by this time had produced 48.5 million carats of predominantly industrial quality diamonds from 148 million tons of ore. In 1945 it was decided to re-open the mine using underground mining methods. A system using long hole benching was devised (Hodgson and Sewel 1960). This system was later modified but still forms the basis for approximately fifty percent of production. Following the successful introduction of block caving on associated diamond mines in the Kimberley area (Gallagher and Loftus 1960) this mining method was introduced to the Premier Mine in the late 60's and now accounts for nearly 50% of production. This paper will discuss block caving at Premier Mine in the light of our experience and discussion will be directed to the main geological and structural features of the orebody and host rocks and the related constraints imposed on the mining methods. Reference is made to the long hole benching mining method for comparative purposes. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONS The ore from the block caving and bench mining areas gravitates via ore passes to a twin haulage, 500m below surface. Electric 13 tonne locomotives, each hauling a train of 10 Granby type cars, deliver the ore to two 42" x 48" (1.06m x 1.22m) jaw crushers. The ore is reduced in size to minus 0.15m before being hoisted to the treatment plant on surface. Hoisting is done with 12.5 tonne bottom discharge skips in a five compartment rectangular shaft using two 3 240 H.P. semi automatic Ward Leonard winders. A small single drum service winder operates in the other compartment. Men and materials travel in a separate shaft in a 5,4m x 2,8m cage operated by a Koepi winder. These two shafts are also the main intake airways to the mine. The two main extraction fans capable of 250 m3/s at 3,2 kPa are situated on surface and are connected to the underground workings by an incline and a network of air passes and return airways. GEOLOGY Although there are numerous occurrences of kimberlite bodies in the district, the Premier Mine kimberlite pipe is the only economic orebody. It is roughly oval in shape with surface dimensions of 900m on the long axis and 450monthe short axis. The surface area is 320 000 m2. The kimberlite has intruded a massive body of felsite and norite which is intersected by a number of faults. The contact between the kimberlite and host rock is clear cut and dips inward at an average angle of 80°. Cutting across the pipe and the country rock is a 75 metre thick gabbro sill, the top of which intersects the pipe below the 347m level and dips at 15' to the north west. The kimberlite has been metamorphosed a distance of some 20m both above and below the sill contacts. Age measurements on biotite from the gabbro date the sill as 1 115 million years, thereby providing a minimum age of the pipe. (Pre Cambrian). All other pipes in South Africa are of Cretaceous age (60 million years). A simplified geological plan and section of the Premier Mine orebody is shown in Figure 1. It is thought that the kimberlite intruded in at least three distinct phases. The kimberlites of these different phases can be distinguished most easily by their characteristic colour. BROWN KIMBERLITE. This is the oldest kimberlite and forms a crescent shape in plan on the south eastern side of the pipe. In depth it increases in relative area. Although the brown kimberlite carries the highest diamond grade in terms of carats per ton all the various kimberlites in the Premier pipe are economic to mine.

In examining steel under the microscope, one is constantly confronted with structures that are difficult to interpret. Recently, in a collection of samples for exhibition purposes, the writer found a piece of open-hearth runner metal, 2 in. (50 mm.) in diameter, that had been fractured for use as a sample of cast-steel structure. On polishing and etching a section for the purpose of photographing a field to typify the microstructure of steel in the "as cast" condition, a variety of structures was found (Fig. 1) so arranged as to arouse interest at once. For a distance of about 0.065 in. (1.6 mm.) from the skin of the runner, normal ingot structure was found (Fig. 2); this was followed by a zone, about 0.215 in. (5.5 mm.) wide, of considerably lower carbon content in which occurred a most pronounced Widmannstattian structure (Fig. 3); from this point on to the center of the runner, the metal was again of normal ingot structure (Fig. 4). Representative samples taken from the metal in the three zones showed the following analysis: Carbon Nickel Chromium Per Cent. Per Cent. PeR Cent. Metal from skin........................... 0.34 1.26 0.63 Widmannstattian zone.................... 0.21 1.18 0.63 Metal from center......................... 0.34 1.32 0.67 Such a condition might result from decarburization followed by recarburization of the skin. This section came from one of the branch runners to the bottom of the mold, not from the main runner, and it is difficult to conceive of decarburization occurring in this portion of a runner. If the metal were stripped while quite hot, some oxidation would take place but the recarburization is unaccounted for. It could not occur by segregation after solidification—the tendency then is for diffusion and homogeneity. The following seems to fit the conditions and is offered as an explanation. The outside layer of normal structure 0.065 in. (1.6 mm.) thick was chilled on the walls of the runner brick when the molten metal first entered the runner. Aboue 950°C the Nb-Zr system consists of a completely miscible bcc solid solution, commonly called the phase. Between 950 and 600°C, and between 20 and 85 pct Nb, the phase deconlposes, after sunciently long times, into two bcc solid solutions. The pct Zr alloys are conveniently descibecl with T-T-T (time-temperature-transformation) curves having a nose at about 2 hr at 700°C. The reaction rate varies only slowly with zirconium content and negligibly with oxygen contanzination; it is speeded up by a factor of 10 to 15 by 90 pct cold ulork and slowed dou by n factor oj 10 to 30 by a two-hundrecljold increase in grain size. Nb-r alloys with compositions between 40 and 85 pct Nb have been the basis for the majority of commercially important superconducting materials. In part because of their commercial promise, more is known about these alloys than about most other high-field superconducting materials. At the same time, there is considerable disputed or incomplete metallurgical information. For example, although Rogers and tkins&apos; indicate a monotectoid reaction at approximately 600°C and a two-phase 01 + 0, field extending between 20 and 85 pct Nb and to a maximum of 95OGC, erhout&apos; has reported that this entire region would be a single homogeneous B were it not for oxygen contamination. Again, although it has been shown that relatively short-time heat treatments in the vicinity of 700CZ significantly improve the ability of short wire samples to carry high currents in high magnetic fields at 4.2K, these observations have never been fully correlated with the structural change or changes occurring during the anneal. We intend to investigate in detail the effect of metallurgical variables, including heat treatment, on the superconducting properties of hard superconductors. To verify that our experimental techniques are valid and to establish a relative standard against which other materials may be measured, we feel it advisable to know the behavior of the Nb-Zr alloys under a variety of processing conditions. As an initial step toward this goal, we have determined in detail the kinetics of the transformations in Nb-Zr alloys. EXPERIMENT A number of problems had to be solved before beginning any fruitful work on the reaction kinetics in this system. While solving some of these problems, either by chance or by design, small amounts of information were obtained about alloys containing 40, 50, 60, 65, 67, 70, and 75 pct Nb, bal. Zr. In addition, a large range of grain sizes and a range of temperatures considerably greater than the range indicated by Rogers and Atkins phase diagram were examined. We will, however, report in detail only the results obtained for the Nb + 33 pct Zr and Nb + 25 pct Zr alloys at three grain sizes, two levels of oxygen contamination, and the temperature range 550 to 950°C. These data are most complete, but the other data are sufficiently complete to indicate the kind and magnitude of the variation of the transformation kinetics outside this range. The first and most difficult problem encountered in this inquiry was one of sample homogeneity. When Nb-Zr alloys are arc- or electron-beam-melted on a cooled copper hearth, solidification is sufficiently slow that there is appreciable coring in the cast structure and a large variation of grain size across the button thickness. Both these factors significantly affect the apparent reaction rate in the system. A two-step solution to the problem was attempted; an arc-melting and drop-casting technique has been developed by conald that greatly reduces the as-cast grain size and virtually eliminates coring segregation. Ingots made in this way exhibited no detectable (3 pct maximum) zirconium segregation. Before it was evident just how good this technique was, we attempted to supplement it with rather long-time, high-temperature annealing of the cast ingots. This annealing was carried out in evacuated and sealed (seal-off pressures < 1.0 x 106 torr) quartz capsules lined with tantalum foil at 1400 to 1450 C for 8 to 72 hr. There were two principal effects of this treatment: the grain size increased to a fairly uniform 150 p, and the surface and all grain boundaries near the surface acquired a film of a second phase, tentatively identified as an oxide (possibly additionally contaminated with silicon). There was no evidence that this 1400 C treatment had affected the zirconium segregation. High-temperature annealing was subsequently used only for grain-size control, but anneals of longer than 4 hr at temperatures greater than 1000°C were performed in dynamic vacuums (pressure no greater than 1.0 x lo torr). Any contamination resulting from these treatments was well below the limits of detection of our techniques. All samples, as cast, were cold-swaged to at least 85 pct reduction in area. The samples called cold-worked were tested as swaged. The minimum re-crystallization anneal for these alloys was about 12 hr at 1050 C; this produced an equiaxed grain diameter of about 4 to 8 P. Annealing for 4 hr at 1450°C produced a grain size of about 80 to 150 p; and annealing for 4 hr at 1650aC, close to the melting point of many of these alloys, produced a grain size of 0.5 to 1.0 mm. THAT bainite formed near the M, temperature bears a striking r esemblance to martensite tempered at the same temperature has been shown by the electron microscope.&apos; By means of electron diffraction,&apos; it has been established that carbide and cementite are present in bainite formed at 500°F (260°C); these carbides are also found in martensite tempered at 500°F (260°C).&apos; The investigation reported here is concerned with an X-ray study of the matrix phases in lower bainite and tempered martensite. These phases have turned out to be dissimilar in structure; the matrix of bainite is body-centered-cubic while that of tempered martensite is body-centered-tetragonal. A vacuum-melted Fe-C alloy containing 1.43 pct C was studied. Specimens of 16 in. diam were sealed in evacuated silica tubing and austenitized at 2300°F (1260°C) for 24 hr. One specimen was quenched into a salt bath at 410°+7 °F (210°+4°C), held for 16 hr, and cooled to room temperature. The structure consisted of about 90 to 95 pct bainite, the re: mainder being martensite and retained austenite. A second specimen was quenched from the austen-itizing temperature into iced brine and then into liquid nitrogen. It consisted of about 90 pct martensite and 10 pct retained austenite. The latter specimen was tempered for 10 hr at 410°+2°F (210°+1°C). The specimens were then fractured along prior austenite grain boundaries (grain size about 2 mm diam) by light tapping with a hammer. Single aus-tenite grains, mostly transformed, were etched to about 0.5 mm diam and mounted in a Unicam single crystal goniometer, which allowed both rotation and oscillation of the sample. Lattice parameters were measured by the technique of Kurdjumov and Lyssak. This method takes advantage of the fact that martensite and lower bainite are related to austenite by the Kurdjumov-sachs orientation relationships Thus, the (002) and the (200) (020) reflections can be recorded separately, permitting the c and a parameters to be determined without interference from overlapping reflections. According to these findings, the matrix phase in bainite is body-centered-cubic and, within experimental error, has the same lattice parameter as ferrite (2.866A). On the other hand, martensite, tempered as above, retains some tetragonality, with a c/a ratio of 1.005t0.002. Most workers in the past have assumed that bainite is generated from austenite as a supersaturated phase, but the nature of this product has not been established. The question arises as to whether bainite initially has a tetragonal structure and then tempers to cubic, or if it forms directly as a cubic structure. If it forms with a tetragonal lattice, it might well be expected to temper to the cubic phase at about the same rate as tetragonal martensite. The martensitic specimen used here was given approximately the same tempering exposure, 10 hr at 410°F, as suffered by the greater part of the bainite during the isothermal transformation. About 50 pct bainite was formed in 6 hr at 410°F. On tempering at this temperature, martensite reduces its tetragonality within a few minutes to a value corresponding to 0.30 pct C.&apos; Further decomposition proceeds slowly, and after 10 hr the c/a ratio is still appreciable, i.e., 1.005. Thus, even if the bainite were to form as a tetragonal phase with a tetragonality corresponding to only 0.30 pct C, which might be assumed to coexist with e carbide, it would not be expected to become cubic in this time. It seems very likely, therefore, that bainite forms irom austenite as a body-centered-cubic phase and does not pass through a tetragonal transition. The carbon content of the cubic phase has not been determined, but it could easily be as high as 0.1 pct, within the experimental uncertainty of the lattice-parameter measurements. It has been postulated that retained austenite decomposes on tempering into the same product as martensite tempered at the same temperature. There is now considerable doubt on this point. The isothermal transformation product of both primary and retained austenite at the temperature in question here is bainite," and the present findings show that bainite and tempered martensite do not have the same matrix.
