Young's modulus doto ore presented for W, Mo. Ta. V, Cr. Ni, Ti, and Zr as a function of temperature up to about 0.7 of the melting points. A plot of reduced temperature us reduced modulus produces a general correlation except for titanium and zirconium. Young's modudlus data for some representatiue commercial graphites are given up to 2400°C. All results were obtained from longitudinal resonance-frequency measzrrements of 4-in. long samples, corrected for simultaneously measured thermal expansion. Comparison of poly crystalline and single-crystal tungsten behavior indicates that all the observed modulus values are frequencv -dependent at the higher temperatures. STATIC measurements of elastic properties of materials at elevated temperatures are extremely difficult to make since the elastic behavior is obscured by relatively large first-stage creep effects. Dynamic methods which avoid this difficulty by utilizing the measurement of the resonance frequency of a simple vibrational mode have been described in the 1iterature.l-3 The authors have extended the operating temperature range of this type of measurement to above 2000°C and have described the equipment elsewhere.~ The Young's modulus data presented here were obtained with this equipment, using samples about 4 in. long and 1/4 in. diam, supported horizontally at the center and excited to the fundamental longitudinal resonance frequency. Young's modulus was calculated by the formula: E = 4f2f2p where E = Young's modulus, / = frequency, 1 = length, and p = density. Dilatometric data were obtained simultaneously by optical measurements of the change of length of the sample. For the metals tested, an attempt was made to obtain modulus values that would be representative of the pure, strain-free, randomly oriented material. All of the graphites studied exhibited a high degree of elastic anisotropy, while the method assumes an isotropic homogeneous material. However , when the values for Young's modulus obtained for AUC graphite were compared with those taken from static measurements at room temperature they were found to be only about 4 pet higher. This is excellent agreement considering the low precision of modulus calculations from stress-strain curves. The difficulty in using data of apparent Young's modulus for anisotropic materials arises when the attempt is made to use these data and shear-modulus data to obtain Poisson's ratio. The results are usually meaningless and sometimes absurd.' RESULTS Table I lists the sources, impurity content, thermal history, and dilatometric constants of the metal samples that were investigated. All the metal samples were tested under a vacuum of 1 to 5 x 10-5 Torr. Where our dilatometric data agreed with previously published data, the table lists the previous values and the literature reference. Where no reference is given, the constants were determined from our dilatometric data. Table II presents the modulus data in units of millions of psi as a function of temperature in degrees centigrade. The numbers were obtained from curves fitted to the experimental data. For some types of calculations, such as those attempting to correlate creep data, the slope of the modulus curve is of interest, and this information also is reported in Table 11. It is always tempting to try to fit physical-property data into some general pattern and then use this pattern to predict the behavior of other similar materials. The general pattern for an elastic modulus of a metal seems to be a linear deoro- with increasing temperature Over the range between 0.1 and 0.4 of the melting temperature, then a progressive1y decreasing value up to the melting point. During several experimental programs conducted at the Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy, Technical University, Aachen, whisker formation was observed when iron ores were reduced at low as well as at high temperatures. Thus, in an attempt to find the reason for the volume change taking place during reduction, iron whisker growth was observed. Whisker growth appears to be one of the important reasons for the swelling of pellets. One set of experimental observations determined that when iron forms as needles rather than as a crust on the surface of oxide, the pellets became very porous. In related experiments, the beneficiation of finely disseminated iron ores, in which the metallic iron is separated from the gangue in granular or nodular form, was achieved by a reduction-concentration method. In this process, which is conducted at sufficiently high temperatures, oxide whisker growth, resulting from the formation of volatile suboxides and a gas transport mechanism, plays a vital role in the joint deposition of SiO, and iron from the vapor stage.

The various ion exchange reactions occurring during restoration of formations contaminated with ammonia during in situ uranium leaching are reviewed. Data are presented on the restoration of a previously leached laboratory packed column wing lime saturated brine. Although this restoration fluid selectively and effectively removed the ammonia, 24.5 pore volumes are required to reduce the ammonia concentration from 500-3 mg/L (29- 0.18 gr per gal). The essence of NaCl in the restoration fluid at levels in formation water is beneficial in improving the selectivity of the system for NH4+ removal and reducing Ca + + ion consumption

The continued use of permanent-type, we11 completion Iras pointed LIP the need for more powerful through-tubing perforating equipment. A new expendable shaped charge perforator has been developed in which the charges are run through the tubing in a vertical position and then opened out to a horizontal position when at the desired shooting zone. The performance of this new tool is comparable to that of conventional casing type perforators. This paper describes the new tool and its applications. Performance data in targets rind under various actual well conditions are presented. INTRODUCTION The general acceptance and increasing use of pernianent-type well completion by the oil industry has indicated the need for through-tubing perforating equipment with performance comparable to that of conventional casing type perforators.'.' To achieve the performance desired, a new, expendable, shaped charge perforator has been developed with adequate power for effectively perforating both 51/2-in. and 7-in. casing below tubing. This has been accomplished without resulting severe damage to the casing and can he obtained under extremes of pressure and temperature. The design of this new tool is a radical departure from previous concepts of tubing guns since it was felt that the two major limitations imposed by previous designs severely handicapped performance. The first of these limitations was the restriction imposed upon the length of the charges by the necessary small inside diameter of the carrier. This resulted from the necessity for compromises in designing a hermetically sealed gun small enough to allow free passage through 2-in. tubing, yet with sufficient wall thickness to withstand some minimum pressure. In an effort to overcome this limitation, the charges were in some cases placed at an angle with the axis of the well with resulting loss in effective depth of penetration. The second limitation concerned the extreme distance of the charges from the casing when the gun was fired. An example of the latter situation is demonstrated by the fact that a conventional 13/4-in. tubing gun centralized in 51/2-in., 17-lb casing has a clearance of more than 1-9/16-in. on all sides. This means that a considerable portion of the force from each charge must be expended in penetrating this 1-9/16-in. of well fluid before it even reaches the casing. With the gun centered in 7-in., 23-lb casing, the amount of fluid penetration required of each jet is in excess of 21/4-in. In a situation where the 13/4-in. gun is touching one side of the 51/2-in., 17-lb casing, the jets from the charges on the opposite side have more than 3%-in. of fluid to penetrate. A similar situation in 7-in., 23-lb casing necessitates the penetration of more than 4-9/16-in. of fluid. The penetrating effect of the charges is severely impaired in passing through so much fluid. Under such conditions, there is usually insufficient force left to penetrate the casing. Previous studies have shown the decided disadvantage of having to shoot through such an excessive quantity of well fluid.'.' The problem. then, was how to position large powerful charges close to the casing prior to firing and still manage free passage through 2-in, tubing. The solution appeared to be in some method of folding sealed charge units in an open type, expendable. 13/4-in. carrier for travel through the tubing, and unfolding them upon their arrival at the shooting zone in the casing. Thick-Freeport coal by means of a 13-ft 6-in. diam Chance cone and 16 No. 7 Deister tables. The plant feed ranges between 370 and 410 tons per hr, of which approximately 31 pct is 1/4xO-in. size, and the plant reject ranges between 14 and 16 pct of the feed.

THAT the march of civilization has synchronized with progress in the art of utilizing minerals is a proposition that needs no proof. It is a truism. Historians conveniently divide the time that the earth has been inhabited into the Stone Age, the Bronze (more accurately the Copper) Age, and the Iron Age. As archeologists are not entirely in accord as to dates, and as a few centuries make no difference whatever to this particular story, it may be approximated that the Age of Copper began about 8000 years B.C. and that it gave place to the Age of Iron about 1000 years B.C. The logic of this succession-stone, copper, iron-lies in the fact that copper first displaced stone, then iron displaced copper as the standard material out of which the utensils, implements, and weapons, the utilitarian articles of antiquity, were made. After the advent of iron, the mining and smelting of copper continued. Copper and bronze found use particularly in objects of artistic and ornamental nature; but the superior qualities of iron for many purposes were recognized. Useful manufactures of those days consisted principally of knives, hammers, chisels, spear-heads, arrow-heads, and battle-axes. First these were made of stone, then of copper and bronze, then of iron-particularly as there was plenty of iron ore, and the metallurgy was comparatively easy of accomplishment. Of course, the periods of transition dragged slowly. Definite as were the three Ages dominated by the mineral substance from which they get their names, ten or fifteen centuries probably elapsed from the time the first iron was smelted in a small charcoal furnace until it became the accepted material from which to shape a battle-axe. A detailed investigation of the disloccrtion mechanisms controlling prismatic, slip in a solid solutions of magnesium containing up to 15.9 at. pel Li revealed that low-temperature prismatic slip is controlled by the Peicrl's mechanism for all alloy compositions. At higher temperatures slip in the 7.9 at. pet Li alloy was found to follow the diclates of the cross-slip mechanism from basal to prism planes, while the higlier-lilhium alloys exhibited an athermal dejormation process which might be due COARSE-GRAINED polycrystalline aggregates of distilled magnesium exhibit very limited ductility at low temperatures.' The ductility of polycrystalline magnesium, however, is much improved by solid-solution additions in excess of about 8 at. pct to shot-range ordering. The major effect of lithium additions on the low-temperature Shear] stress. for prismatic slip appears to be due to its efftct in lowering the Peierl's stress whereas (1 increase in the shear stress with increased lithium conlent at higher temperatures might he due to short-range order strengthening. Additions rip to 7.9 (at. pel Li appear to have only minor effects on the slackiug-jaidt energy. Li.2 Although the relative amounts of basal slip and twinning are not materially altered by such alloying, a substantial change takes place in the relative amounts of prismatic slip. Whereas prismatic slip is negligible and limited to regions of high stress concentrations in the vicinity of the grain boundaries in pure magnesium, extensive prismatic slip over entire grains occurs in the higher lithium content alloys. Furthermore, as the lithium content is increased above 8 at. pct, the flow stress for polycrystalline aggregates decreases. Comparison of the single-crystal data on pure magnesium for basal slip by Sheely and Nash3 and those for prismatic slip by Flynn, Mote, and Dorn4 indicates that the critical resolved shear stress for prismatic slip is much above that for basal slip.

The Fifth Annual National Exposition of Chemical Industries will be held in Chicago at the Coliseum and First Regiment Armory during the week of Sept. 22. It was decided to hold the exposition in Chicago, this year, for two reasons: The U. S. Army commandeered the Grand Central Palace Exposition Building in New York, immediately on the close of the last exposition and converted it into a receiving hospital, the use for which is now, happily, nearly ceased; and it was thought that the Exposition would succeed in bringing about a greater development of chemical industries in the Chicago district and the adjoining states. Prof. Mathesius analyzes the running of Howland's furnace No. 19, according to the method described by him in Stahl and Eisen, 1916, Nos. 30 and, 31, and in his work "Die physikalischen und chemischen Grundlagen den Eisenhüttenwesens" (Spamer, Leipzig). By assuming 500 Cal. lost from the hearth by radiation and cooling water per kilogram of pig iron made, a throat-gas temperature of 600° C., and taking the ratio of C02/CO as 0.64, he finds that his diagram would show 0.68 kg. of carbon oxidized per kilogram of pig iron, while Howland gives 0.66 kg. He expresses himself as well satisfied with this test of the accuracy of his theory. A few hates on the occurrence and significance of mud volcanoes in Colombia may be of interest at the present time, owing to the renewed activity in geological exploration of the coastal regions bordering the Caribbean Sea. The best-known volcanoes are found a few miles from the seacoast. One is situated to the south of Puerto Colombia; the second, to the east of Cartagena near the village of Turbaco; and the third, near the village of Puerto Escondido south of the Sinu River. Others are reported in more inaccessible localities. Usually they stand 2 1/2 or 3 ft. (0.762 or 0.914 m.) above the surrounding ground at the crater, though several craters from 10 to 20 ft. -(3.04 to 6.09 m.) "apart will often build up an extensive mound at low gradient. The shallow mound may cover 1/2 or 3/4 acre (0.2 to 0.3 ha.) with an elevation of 12 or 15 ft. (3.65 or 4.57 m.) at the, center. The craters are formed of hardened blue clay; the inside diameters vary from 14 to 24 in. (35.56 to 60.96 cm.). The rim is continuous, except on one side where there is usually a cut 3 or 4 in. deep, thus allowing an overflow. The craters are filled to the' rim-cut with a thick mixture of blue clay mud and water, which is kept in agitation by escaping gas. Fig. 1 shows the bubble in the act of bursting and Fig. 2 the appearance of the surface of the viscous fluid a second or so later. The frequency of the explosions is determined by the weight of the column of fluid in the neck of the volcano, consequently, such explosions are not synchronous in a group of craters. Ordinarily, there arc two or three explosions in about 3 minutes. The supply of gas is small but steady and sufficient pressure must accumulate before the bubble can enter the column of fluid. The water is derived from the surface and enters the scdirnentary strata not far distant from the volcano. During long dry seasons, as the supply of water fails the volcano dries and geyser action ceases. The temperature of the muddy fluid is normal; the gas is dry and inflammable. - No petroleum products come with the gas. IN the commercial annealing of cartridge brass there are four points regarding which definite data are essential. They have to do with the correct interpretation of grain count in its relation to annealing temperature and, incidentally, to Brinell hardness. These points are: 1. The comparison of the grain sizes of two cartridge-brass mixtures: 69 copper, 31 zinc, 0.376-in. (9.5-min.) gage; and 68 copper, 32 zinc, 0.130-in. (3.3-mm.) gage. 2. The comparison of the grain sizes of annealed metal that had previously been reduced by rolling varying amounts; for instance, 20.0, 36.6, 50.9, and 59.1 per cent. 3. The determination of standards for grain sizes on annealed brass of the composition 68 per cent. copper, 32 per cent. zinc and 69 copper, 31 zinc. 4. The comparison of grain size with Brinell hardness on identical samples of annealed metal. In their comprehensive and thorough investigation of the recrystallization of cold-worked alpha brass on annealing,1 Mathewson and Phillips have discussed the relations between temperature of anneal, degree of deformation, and structural alteration in alpha brass. They have also shown certain comparisons between the ordinary physical properties and the grain size of annealed brass. The purpose of the present investigation is mainly concerned with the grain size of cartridge brass, its relation to Brinell hardness, and the publication of sufficient data to enable those engaged in the inspection of such material to have a correct foundation upon which to work.

Ed¬munds, Anderson and Waring are to be commended for their excellent work in so painstakingly reducing to constants, the variables believed to be associated with these types of stress corrosion. An ammonia stress-cracking apparatus similar in many respects to the one described has been assembled. Certain aspects of its construction may be of interest. Tensile loading of the specimens, which are usually Y8-in. diameter wires, is accomplished by springs acting in compression in compact, portable, tubular assemblies weighing less than 10 lb. The lower end of each assembly contains the test specimen and is passed into the test chamber for exposure to the moist ammoniacal atmosphere. There is considerable convenience in being able to load the specimens in a portable unit, which may be warmed to prevent condensation, and then thrust instantaneously into the test chamber. Spring loading obviates the use of weights, but it has the disadvantage of allowing some relaxation of the load if the specimen elongates during corrosion. The maximum loss in load found so far was 20 per cent. The air supplied to the test chamber is humidified by passing it through thermo¬statically controlled water. The air is dispersed into fine bubbles by being forced through a porous ceramic filter at the bottom of a tank containing about 10 liters of water. It is usually assumed that the rate-determining step in the migration of a grain boundary involves the thermally activated transfer of single atoms across the interface. Chemical reaction rate theory then gives a migration rate which is proportional to the driving force when this is small compared to kT.1 In their recrystallization studies on aluminum, Gordon and vandermeer2 obtained data which was capable of providing the first experimental test of this proportionality. They correlated stored energy (driving force) release measurements determined calorimetrically with fraction recrystal-lized kinetic (growth rate) data acquired metallo-graphically at a temperature where a significant amount of recovery takes place concurrently with recrystallization. Within experimental error, the results of Gordon and Vandermeer confirmed experimentally, at least over a limited range, the linear dependence of boundary migration (growth) rate on driving force in accordance with theory. In obtaining these results, however, an incorrect, implicit assumption was made in relating the average instantaneous growth rate of the recrystallized grains to the measured fraction recrystallized kinetic data. The purpose of this present note is to point out and correct this assumption. An alternate approach, whereby a more proper average growth rate can be calculated from the recrystallization kinetic data, is presented. The earlier data, reevaluated in terms of this new approach, show the same general trend as before so that the original conclusion of Gordon and vandermeer2 is still valid. As was shown in a detailed study3 of the geometrical features of recrystallization in aluminum, the colonies of recrystallized grains can be regarded as uniform cylinders embedded in a three-dimensional matrix, the number of such colonies being constant. Thus during the early stages of recrystallization the volume fraction recrystallized, Xv, can be written as Xv=ynvlr2 [l] where y is a shape factor and i and r are defined as the average length and radius of a recrystallized colony and are spatial averages over the specimen. -nv, is the number of such colonies in a unit of volume. IT has been reported recently1 that the hardenability and toughness of forging steels may be improved appreciably by the use of complex deoxidizers containing titanium, aluminum, and vanadium. In the light of these results, an investigation of similar deoxidizers containing various hardening and grain-refining elements was proposed. These deoxidizers included three manganese-silicon-aluminum-titanium al- [ ] loys with and without boron and calcium, three titanium-aluminum ferroalloys with vanadium, molybdenum and zirconium, respectively, an aluminum-zirconium ferro-alloy, and plain ferroboron. Their approximate compositions are given in Table I, and the results obtained so far in the investigation of their effects on steel are presented in the later parts of this paper. METHOD OF USING DEOXIDIZERS The deoxidizers listed in Table I were used in three series of 0.40 per cent carbon steels, which were melted in a small basic-lined induction furnace and cast in the form of I7-lb. ingots about 2.75 in. square. The basic charge for each heat was 10 lb. Armco iron and 6 lb. of clean low-carbon sheet-steel scrap. When melted, this charge was deoxidized with 15 grams of ferrosilicon, then about 500 grams of pig iron was added to give the desired carbon content. After the pig iron was dissolved, nickel [ ] shot and high-carbon ferrochromium were added if required, and additions of 80 per cent high-carbon ferromanganese and 50 per cent ferrosilicon were made to provide the proper amounts of those elements. Aluminum was added to every heat 2 min. after the silicon, for grain-size control and preliminary deoxidation. One minute later the special deoxidizer was added to the clean bare surface of the molten steel, and 2 min. afterward the steel was poured into the ingot mold, using a hot-top and pipe-preventing compound after pouring to decrease the depth of the shrinkage cavity. The special deoxidizers were used mostly in the form of about ½ to ¾ -in. lumps,

THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the relative merits of the large 31/8 in. machine and the small 21/4-in. tappett machine in driving development-headings ; and although the . data here presented were obtained from cross-cut headings alone, experience has shown that the results are equally true in drifting, raising and winning. Recently we drove two parallel cross-cuts through the same formation, using a 3k-in. machine at the breast of one cross-cut., and a 2k-in. machine of the same make at the breast of the other. The results of this work afforded an ideal comparison, since in both cases the headings were advanced through rock practically of the same hardness and breaking-properties ; the amount of sludging was equal, and there was no difference in the condition of the steel or the machines, in the air-pressure or in the experience of the operating-crews. Some operators in the Cripple Creek district contend that there is ground which cannot be handled with the small machine, the holes being too small to contain enough powder to pull the ground, etc. The results obtained in working the property of the Portland Gold Mining Co., however, show that the ground worked by them does not fall in this class. During a period of two years there have been driven, with the small machine, 4 miles and 308 ft. of development-headings, through a diversity of ground, including Pike's Peak granite (a coarsely porphyritic type of granite), highly indurated, andesitic or phonolytic breccia, true massive andesite, trachytic phonolyte, tuffas, and along dikes of decomposed basalt and hard phonolyte; in every instance a satisfactory record was made. The headings here described were driven through highly indurated, andesitic breccia, having a hardness of from 5.2 to 7.2

Measurements of rate of growth, thermodymmic quantities, and partitioning of Mn are reported for high-purity eutectoid Fe-C and Fe-C-Mn steels for the auistenite-pearlite reaction. Evaluztion of the cotnstants of a derived-rate equation with these data indicate that Mn additions cause the decrease observed by increasivg the activation energy and apparent activation entropy or the movenment of complexes at the interface. A diffusion-controlled mechanism is not required. Appreciable partitioning of Mn to cementite occurs entirely behind the austenite-pearlite interface for more than 30°C of subcooling. ThE growth of pearlite from austenite has been extensively studied over a period of years. but the rate-controlling step in the process is not known nor is the mechanisrn of the effect of alloying elements understood. A comprehensive review of the subject has been given by Mehl and Hagel. The present study has been concerned with further considerations of the effects of alloying elements on the rate of growth of pearlite. Analytical relatioriships for the rate of growth of pearlite have been considered by Zener.2 Turnbull,3 Machlin,4 Cahn.5 Frye,6 and Frye et a1.7 The derived expressions in each case involve the free energy of the transformation. the interlamellar spacing. and some rate term of the nature of the diffusion coefficient. mobility or frequency of occurrence of some rate-determining step. The treatments. of course. differ in detail. Further consideration is given in the present paper to the equation of Frye, Stansbury. and McElroy which was derived from modified absolute rate theory without in any way specifying the mechanism of the reaction. Subsequently, Darken, Fisher, and Galligan8 have reported that a layer of ferrite separates pearlite from austenite at the growing interface (i,e., the advancing face of Fe3C is in contact with ferrite, not austenite) and the ratio of the thickness of this layer to the spacing of the pearlite has not been found to vary with alloy content or transformation temperature. This observation does not require any alteration in the above equation: however, it may require that a different significance be attached to the factor, AT. The AT term appears in Eq. The Similkameen mine is located about 100 miles east of Vancouver, British Columbia, and ten miles west of Princeton, where the mine personnel live. Princeton was the first town in the British Columbia interior, originally the home of Cree and Blackfoot Indians and later settled by men of the Hudson's Bay Company, miners, cattlemen, and others looking for gold. After gold, there were coal mines and then copper mines . The Granby Consolidated Mining Company, Limited, operated the Copper Mountain ore bodies from 1926 to 1930 and from 1937 to 1957, mining 34 million tons of about 170 copper ore, mainly from underground. In 1966, Newmont Mining Corporation acquired the Ingerbelle property on the west side of the Similkameen River. Newmont then purchased the assets of Granby and formed Similkameen Mining Company to develop and operate the Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies on both sides of the Similkameen River canyon. The Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies lie within rocks composed of andesite tuffs, agglomerates, and argillites. Chalcopyrite mineralization occurs as a dissemination. Original ore reserves were estimated at approximately 75 million tons grading 0.52% copper. Mining is carried out on a three-shift, seven-day-week schedule at a rate of about 60,000 tons of ore and waste per day with four 10 cu yd P & H 1900 shovels which mine and load a fleet of 100-ton Lectra Haul trucks. Among the unique features of the design and construction of the Similkameen project was the construction of 4. 5 miles (7. 24 km) of new Trans-Provincial No. 3 highway by the company to the specifications of the British Columbia Department of Highways. The old highway traversed the Ingerbelle pit area. Along the relocated highway is a 4, 000 ft (1219 m) long berm which conceals the mine pit. This area has been replanted and now looks like the original forest scenery. Another interesting feature is that the tailings from the concentrator flow by gravity over a 1000 ft (34% m) suspension bridge, which crosses the Similkameen River canyon then passes through a tunnel to the dam site, a distance of 59,000 ft (17,980 m) to the cyclone station. When the Copper Mountain ore bodies are mined, the ore will be transported by belt conveyor on a second suspension bridge across the canyon to the Ingerbelle concentrator.
