THERE are two general approaches to the problem of increasing profits from an operation. One is to lower expense; the other is to raise income. Mechanical preparation of coal may be used for either purpose but a prudent consideration of many details must precede any decision lest the results be negative instead of positive. It is quite possible that any net gain will result from a combination of the two. Since mechanically prepared coal invariably is a better product qualitatively than a hand-picked coal from the same mine, it is a reason¬able expectation that the customer will be willing to increase the pro¬ducer's income by paying a higher price. Or there may be the possibility that a combination of mechanical mining plus mechanical cleaning will give a lower over-all production cost for the coal in the railroad car. More likely, there will be found a combination of these two factors. From the customer's point of view, the competitive delivered cost per B.t.u. considered in relation to such incidental factors as dust nuisance, handling properties, ash disposal, and ash fusibility determines what he will pay. In a bulk tonnage product such as coal, freight is a very considerable part of the delivered fuel cost, and obviously freight paid on incombustible ash has no economic attractions.

The ternary system Co-Sn-C was studied in the cobalt-rich region. The liquidus projection ulas established and two fonr -phase reactions were found. An isothermal section at 950°C was worked out. In the region studied the following phases were observed: cobalt-rich solid solution, graphite, binary compound y -cobalt-tin, and a ternary compound. As a result of the limited solubility of carbon in liquid cobalt-tin alloys, the investigation was limited to the cobalt-rich region. Tin contents up to 32 at. pct were studied. Cobalt of 99.99 pct purity, tin of 99.97 pct purity and synthetic graphite of 99.93 pct minimum purity prepare the alloys. Carbon determinations of all alloys were obtained by gas volumetric analysis. Samples were investigated microscopically and by X-ray diffraction using CoK, and FeK, radiation. Cooling curves were obtained with a number of alloys to determine the temperature of the four-phase reactions. The thermocouple was calibrated with the melting points of high-purity silver and copper. In the region studied the following phases were observed: Cobalt-rich solid solution (face-centered cubic) Graphite. Binary compound y (solidifies congruently at composition Cop~n)'. Ternary compound k which is face-centered cubic with superlattice and nonferromagnetic.' In Fig. 1 the fields representing the projections of the liquidus surfaces were determined by microscopic investigation and are labled by their primary phase. In the field labled C graphite is the primary phase. During solidification in this field much of the primary graphite was expelled through the surface of the melt. It could not always be established microscopically whether the remaining graphite was primary or purely eutectic. Therefore it was not possible to determine accurately the boundary curve which drops from the binary eutectic el at 1309 "~~ to the point of the four-phase reaction at F. The ter-nary carbide is the primary phase in the field labled k. To the right of this field the primary graphite is consistently nodular whereas flake graphite is observed at tin contents somewhat below F. The ternary carbide does not appear to solidify congruently. The graphite is attacked in a peritectic reaction along the boundary between k and C. Thus no graphite is observed in alloys in the k field. In alloys right of the boundary between k and C the graphite nodules are located in the center of the k crystallites, further documenting the peritectic nature of the reaction with the graphite. A four-phase reaction was found at F and 1120 &3"C. The most likely reaction is L+ CY-Co + C — k. Below the temperature of the binary eutectic ez at 1112" a second four-phase reaction was observed at E and 1100 lt3"C. It is the ternary eutectic L — CY-Co + k + y. Figs. 2(a ) to (e) show microstructures of the ternary alloys in the as-cast condition. Fig. 2(a) shows the eutectic a-Co + C (with some primary graphite) with the carbide k in the grain boundaries. Fig. 2(b) shows primary cobalt (dark areas) and the eutectic a-Co + k which is formed along F-E.

INTRODUCTION Conditions for formation of porphyry copper deposits appear to have been propitious in the Appalachian orogen from the end of Precambrian into Middle Ordovician, and again from Middle Devonian into Mississippian. In the Appalachians we can now record the evolution of a porphyry copper province within a developing orogen, one that reached metamorphic and structural maturity by the end of Devonian. Fig. 15, after Irwin and Coleman (1972), locates that portion of the Appalachian orogen included in this study, and Fig. 16 illustrates general geology of the area. Deposits mentioned in Table 3 and in the text are shown in Fig. 16. Data presented summarize personal observations by the author, published descriptions of specific areas noted in the bibliography, and abstracts from Provincial assessment files. Sources of previously published data are acknowledged. Few comprehensive descriptions of individual porphyry copper deposits in this area exist, so much of the data presented is new to the literature. Porphyry mineralization has, for this chapter, been restricted to porphyry copper de- posits, although porphyry molybdenum de- posits (Clark, 1972) are also shown in Fig. 16 (Hollister, et al., 1974). Copper- molybdenum and tungsten-molybdenum skarns are also omitted to simplify discu sion, though each is known in the area studied. Gaspe Copper is included, however; min- eralization in this deposit is present in the intrusion as well as in the skarn adjacent (Bell and Scott, 1954). Porphyry deposits listed in Table 3 are included because of some important feature, although other deposits have been reported (e.g., Kirkham and Soregaroli, 1975 ) . Clearly, no table now compiled could be complete. The pace of exploration insures that new occurrences will probably be found. Summaries of features exhibited by intrusions shown in Table 3 should remain valid, however, since they appear representative and are based on an adequate number of deposits in the area studied. Paleozoic porphyry copper prospects (shown in Fig. 16) are more common, apparently, in the northeastern part of the orogen, rarely having been found south of Catheart or west of the Logan Line. Occurrences of molybdenum and other associated lithophile elements are, however, known to the south and west as well as further north. Killeen and Newman (1965), King (1970),

THE importance of contact angles in flotation has long been recognized, but little has been done to get quantitative relationships between the surface coverage of the mineral by the reagent, the length of the hydrocarbon chain, and the contact angle. It is well known that for a complete monolayer on the surface of a mineral the contact angle 8 is determined only by the reagent1 and principally by the chain length of the hydrocarbon radical. Although for flotation the monolayer usually is regarded as being complete, early experiments of Wark and Cox&apos; showed that at very small concentrations of potassium ethyl xanthate the contact angle on galena changed in a continuous way from 0&apos; to the equilibrium value of 60". Further, Gaudin and Vincenta showed a similar continuity using heptylic acid and sphalerite. This shows that with probably incomplete monolayers, 0 varies with the degree of surface coverage. At the time these experiments were made it was impossible to measure the actual amount of surface coverage, especially since the decrease of the collector concentration in the liquor could be influenced by chemical side reactions. Through the use of the radioactive tracer method for the measurement of the amount of collector adsorbed on the surface of the mineral, Gaudin and Bloecher&apos; were able to determine accurately the actual surface coverage of dodecylamine acetate on quartz, but they did not measure any contact angles. It is believed that the relationship between the surface coverage and the contact angle is extremely important in flotation, especially as Gaudin and Bloecher showed that a 95 pct recovery is possible with a coverage of only 5 pct. Theoretical Considerations The work of adhesion W is the energy bound (in ergs per sq cm) when an interface is formed. It is determined by the difference of the free surface energies (surface tensions) of the respective phases 7j and yZ before contact and the interfacial free surface energy y, after contact. The definition of the contact angle permits the elimination of the unknown surface energy of the solid and hence the calculation of W from the surface tension of the liquid y and the contact angle 8: W = y (1 + COS0) [1] Consider a surface consisting of two components, identified as 2 and 3, 1 being the liquid. The amount of 2 in the composite surface is x, where 0 < x < 1. The respective contact angles with 1 and air are 8, and 8.. The total work of adhesion of such a surface is the sum of the values of the components multiplied by their respective areas. A formal relation can be written: Wm = x-W2+ (l-x)-W, [2] in which W, is the work of adhesion of the composite surface. Eq 1 can be introduced into Wt and Wa, but in the case of W, some discussion is needed. If the two components are segregated, each component forming an integral part of the composite surface there is no physical meaning for a contact angle 8m calculated from W,, by using eq 1. If, on the other hand, the area of each patch of the components is small in comparison with, say, the diameter of the bubble used in measuring, it could be expected that 0m would have a physical significance, because of the action of the surface tension of the liquid-gas interface tending to smooth out sharp corners. SOVIET RUSSIA reserves must be stupendous. In 1937 I. M. Goubkin placed the reserves of all categories it approximately 48 billion barren which was about twenty billion horn Is in excel:, of all the oil produced in the world since 1857. It is not unlikely in fact it is probable, that these huge stores of petroleum may ultimately be proven to exist within the present boundaries of the U.S.S.R. The size of the country is almost beyond imagination it is 2.7 times as big as the United States. Great sedimentary basins exist in all its different geological provinces, much of which are entirely untested and barely prospected. Oil in commercial quantities is actually produced from formations in every period from the Devonian to the Pleistocene. In the Emba region alone, 300 salt domes are known with an estimate of 700 still to be found. Only 22 of the 300 have been drilled and all showed oil. Of the 22 domes drilled six are now producing. For mining and exploration, and indeed the entire mineral industry, the first century of AIME has ended with far more problems than it began. Paradoxically, most of these problems have arisen not because, the industry has been unsuccessful, but rather because it has succeeded too well. Whatever the public demand for minerals over the past 100 years, it has somehow been met-and met at a price well within the public&apos;s ability to pay for the products. But as AIME moves into its second century, the past successes of mining and exploration are beginning to levy a tax on the future. Prospectors have already found most of the rich and ready ores, and miners have dug them out. New mineral assets grow progressively harder to come by, and as they do, the need for them grows inversely more pressing. How and where and at what cost can adequate supplies be found? How and at what cost can they be mined from heretofore inaccessible recesses deep underground and under the seas-or from vast surface tonnages containing only minor values? And once they are found or won, how can these assets be husbanded for generations to come? How also can they be extracted without injury to the land, air and water on which we and our successors must depend? And what constructive use can be made of the incidental materials now treated merely as wastes-sometimes at great expense?

The minerals barite (BaSO4 barium sulfate) and witherite (BaCO3 barium carbonate) are the chief commercial sources of the element barium and its compounds whose many uses are nearly hidden among the technical complexities of modern industrial processes and products. Barite, the major ore mineral, is extremely vital to the petroleum industry which in 1973 consumed at least 80% of the world&apos;s produc¬tion of 4.4 million tons as a major ingredient of the heavy fluid, called mud, that is circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The re¬maining 20% of the barite production was consumed chiefly in the manufacture of barium chemicals and glass and as a pigment, filler, and extender. Barite occurs throughout much of the world and is available from three major geologic types of deposits-vein and cavity fill¬ing, residual, and bedded-in sufficient quantity at competitive prices to meet current demands. The world&apos;s demand for barite is expected to increase, and geologic circumstances are favor¬able for the discovery of new deposits of com¬mercial value. Witherite is much less common and abun¬dant than barite, although it is more desirable in many ways as a raw material for the pro¬duction of barium chemicals. The United States has not produced witherite since about 1950; England is currently the chief producer of witherite. End Uses Most of the world&apos;s barite production since 1926 has been used as a weighting agent for the muds circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The muds fundamentally are mixtures of water, clay, and barite in different proportions that vary according to local reservoir condi¬tions. Muds with a specific gravity as great as 2.5 are used. The mud is pumped down the hollow drill stem, passes through the bit at the bottom of the hole, and rises to the surface in the space between the drill stem and the wall of the hole. In the course of this circulation the drill bit is cooled, cuttings are removed, the drill stem is lubricated, the walls of the hole are sealed, and the hydrostatic head of the column of weighted fluid helps to confine high oil and gas pressures. The latter feature aids in prevention of gushers, thus reducing both environmental pollution and waste of oil and gas resources as well as conserving the natural reservoir pressure for greater production and rate of recovery of the products contained in the rocks. Barite is particularly well suited for drilling mud because it is clean, easy to handle, soft (nonabrasive), heavy, virtually inert chemi¬cally, and relatively inexpensive compared to many other available heavy materials. Barite is used in the manufacture of glass in continuous tanks. The addition of barite ho¬mogenizes the melt and gives greater brilliance and clarity to the finished glass. Ground barite, both unbleached and bleached by sulfuric acid, is a common industrial filler, extender, and weighting agent. The rubber in¬dustry is a major consumer of barite as a filler. Barite also is added to bristolboard, heavy printing paper, playing cards, rope finishes, brake linings, clutch facings, plastics, and li¬noleum, to name but a few uses. Bleached barite has long been an extender in white lead paint because of its weight. The low index of refraction of barite, however, makes its ability to cover marks poorer than some other sub¬stances, but its low capacity for absorption of oil is a good feature. Off-color or unbleached barite can be used as a filler in colored paints. In the construction industry, some lump barite is used in concrete aggregate to weight down pipelines buried in marshy areas and to shield nuclear reactors. Because barite absorbs gamma radiation well, its use reduces the amount of expensive lead shielding otherwise

This paper is limited primarily to a description of dry coal-cleaning processes in which air currents are used to effectuate a separation between coal and refuse. Processes depending mainly on differences in the coefficient of friction, resilience and shape are not described unless the use of air is necessary for the proper functioning of the process. The air cleaning of coal is of primary importance to the coal industry of the United States. From figures presented in the 1941 edition Mechannual, it is estimated that at least 12 million tons of bituminous coal was cleaned in the United States during 1940 by machines using air as the separating medium. One of the current problems confronting the coal-preparation engineer is the dry cleaning of small sizes and slacks. Progress in machine development for the cleaning of small sizes has been slow in recent years in the United States of America; it has been much more rapid in Britain and on the European continent. This paper does not attempt an exhaustive survey of all these developments, and only machines and processes that have found considerable commercial application are cited. Further, no critical analysis has been made of the theory involved in the separation of coal from refuse by processes using air as the separating medium other than that necessary for an understanding of particular machine designs and applications. The possibility of using air for the separation of coal from refuse was recognized early by mining men and many attempts were made to develop commercial machines. The ingenuity of the early experimenters is to be marveled at in view of their lack of knowledge of the theoretical principles involved. As in other arts, practice has largely preceded theory. Yet, science and practice play a game of leap frog, now one ahead, then the other; the careful experimenmenter governs his efforts along practical lines by adapting his experiments to the limits prescribed by scientific laws. By first studying developments and the theory involved, it is not only possible to adapt processes to new uses but also to reduce materially operating cost and to build larger units without costly failures. Although many inventors have applied for patents for separating minerals by the use of air currents, the literature in regard to coal is meager. Berrisford2 describes briefly some of the early attempts to clean coal without the use of water. Several of the examples cited by him are reproduced herein. Fig. I shows a machine used for grinding and; izing, in which rollers running in a pan with a perforated bottom and fan opening on the side crushed the coal, which was then carried by the air currents to a settling chamber. The heaviest particles dropped out first and the light ones farthest away, as shown. In the year 1864, a machine was made that could be used as a sizer or to separate dirt from coal with a sized feed (Fig. 2).

Human engineering was the keynote of the thirty-ninth annual meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, which was held in New York, December 3-6. This note was sounded by President Charles T. Main in his address at the opening session and was carried through by all the speakers. In his survey of the year&apos;s work, he said that more than 6000 names of engineers were furnished the Government for filling a wide variety of positions. In addition to the 1400 members in service, two members of the council of the society are in uniform in France and one, as a distinct war service, is in charge of one of the largest shipyards. After giving other ways in which the Society has helped the Government, President Main called attention to the necessity for thoroughgoing efforts to increase production and the settlement of questions involving industrial relationships. At the following meeting, President Adams of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers called attention to the necessity of meeting labor in a progressive way, facing labor questions fairly and squarely, as the real interests of labor cannot be separated from those of the engineer. Charles E. Knoeppel, discussing "Industrial Organization as It Affects Executives and Workers," said the problem of the cost of living might be settled in two ways: 1, there must be more producers, and 2, there must be a greater amount supplied by those now producing. The first solution is practicable, he said, if labor is allowed shorter hours, better conditions, and a remuneration that will attract workers. The second can be employed by eliminating waste, standardizing conditions, setting fair tasks, and allowing men to earn an amount that will compensate them for&apos; their skill and cooperation. Dudley R. Kennedy of Philadelphia, employment manager of the American International Shipbuilding Corporation, said the human-engineering phase of the country&apos;s industrial development had generally been overlooked. "We hardly yet know what competition means; we will learn it within a few years. Permit me to prophesy that the executive of the next decade will be the man who best knows men. He will be an originator, a handler of men as individuals, a handler of men in the mass, a leader not a driver, a very human man. The science of human engineering is here to stay. The study of human characteristics is the most enduring, as well as the most fascinating in the world, and still the most complex."

By testing polycrystalline specimens from textured plates which had Previously been used to provide materials for growing single crystals, it has been possible to relate the plastic anisotropy of textured materials to the deformation behavior of single crystals. The deformation studies have been conducted at room temperature on textured polycrystalline magnesium and binary Mg-Th and Mg-Li alloys. Variously oriented specimens of the textured materials were deformed in plane-strain compression and in uniaxial tension and compression. The stress-strain curves are similar in their general jorm of anisotropy and stress levels to those obtained on single crystals of the same alloys. The degree of anisotropy is lower, however, in the polycrystalline materials and correlates with the intensity of the basal texture. Yield loci for the textured materials appear reasonable in terms of the deformation mechanisms, and deviate sharply from the form predicted by the Hill analysis for aniso-tropic material. A N earlier study1 of single crystals has shown that magnesium and magnesium alloys with thorium and with lithium deform at room temperature primarily by basal slip, {10i2) twinning, and (1011) banding. The (10i1) banding mode is a combination of {10ll) twinning followed by (1012) twinning and basal slip within the doubly twinned material.2, 3 Magnesium with lithium can also deform by {1010)(1210) prism slip.1&apos;4&apos;5 Still other deformation modes have been reported for magnesium6-11 but these are considered to play a minor role in room-temperature deformation. In a polycrystalline material, plastic deformation must occur in the individual grains through the operation of one or more of the various deformation modes. Because the critical shear stress for basal slip is very low compared to the activation stresses for the other deformation modes,&apos; basal slip accounts for much of the deformation in the polycrystalline aggregate. However, since there are only two mutually independent basal slip systems, and because five independent systems must be active for an arbitrary shape change in any material,&apos;&apos; modes other than basal slip must account for some of the strain. The deformation of textured magnesium, like that of other hcp metals, must be controlled by the same mechanisms observed in single crystals. In strongly textured material, the form of the anisotropy should be similar to that of single crystals, and the degree of anisotropy should depend on the intensity of the texture. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The anisotropy of deformation was investigated through the use of plane-strain compression tests, as well as uniaxial tension and compression tests. Materials. Test specimens were cut from the three textured plates of magnesium which had previously been used to provide material for single crystals.&apos; These plates, furnished by Dow Chemical Co., had been reduced about 80 pct during the process of being hot-rolled to their final 1/4-in. thicknesses. The plates had the three respective compositions, pure magnesium, Mg-0.5 wt pct Th (0.49 pct Th by spectro-graphic analysis), and Mg-4 wt pct Li (3.84 pct Li by chemical analysis). Impurities other than iron were less than 0.0005 pct Al, 0.01 pct Ca, 0.001 pct Cu, 0.0006 pct Mn, 0.001 pct Ni, 0.003 pct Pb, 0.001 pct Si, 0.001 pct Sn, and 0.01 pct Zn. Iron was 0.001 pct in the pure magnesium, 0.002 pct in the Mg-0.5 pct Th, and 0.014 pct in the Mg-4 pct Li. The textures of the three plates were determined by X-ray diffraction utilizing only the reflection technique out to an angle of 50 deg from the sheet normal. The resulting basal pole figures are presented in Figs. 1, 3, and 5. Grain sizes in the plates were ASTM number 4 in the pure magnesium and number 7 in each of the alloys. Plane-Strain Compression Tests. Plane-strain compression specimens approximately $ in. thick by 4 in. wide by $ in. long were prepared for each of the three compositions. These specimens were prepared in a manner similar to that used for the single-crystal specimens of the earlier study.&apos; All polycrystalline specimens were stress-relieved at 500°F for hr as the final step in their preparation for testing. The testing procedure was identical to that used for the single crystals, involving compression in a channel and using 2-mil Teflon film as a lubricant. The specimens were tested in six orientations of interest, these being the six combinations of the rolling, transverse, and thickness directions of the material serving as loading, extension, and constraint directions in the plane-strain compression test. Each of the six orientations was assigned a two-letter identifying code. These are combinations of the letters (thickness direction), R (rolling direction), and T (transverse direction) with the first letter signifying the loading direction and the second letter the extension direction. For example, ZR specimens were compressed in the thickness direction while extension was permitted to operate in the rolling direction of the textured material. To facilitate comparison of the present work with that of the single-crystal study1 the orientations used for single crystals are given in Table I along with the polycrystalline orientations that most nearly correspond. I. INTRODUCTION. WE owe to the courtesy of Mr. R. M. Raymond, Manager of the El Oro Mining & Railway Co., Ltd., the permission of publishing in this paper the results of a series of experiments and tests made in view of determining the economical limit to which the fine grinding of the ore by tube-mills could be carried on. For the sake of clearness, the following definitions are given of certain terms used in this paper, as well as of the units and screens in the experiments. Slime : In a general way " slime" is that mill-product, of which from 90 to 95 per cent, will pass a 200-mesh screen (0.067 mm. aperture), and which is treated as one class of material in the El Oro cyanide-plants. As a screen-product, slime constitutes all material that *ill pass a 200-mesh, screen. In sizing, the following products are distinguished:- Coarse Sand : That material remaining on a 100-mesh (0.111 mm. aperture) screen. Fine Sand : That passing through. 100-mesh and remaining on a 200-mesh (0.067 mm. aperture) screen. Slime: That passing through 200-mesh. Fines, which pass through 200-mesh and settle in 30 seconds, and silt, which does not settle in 1 minute. Sand-index : The number proportional to its total fineness considered from the economical point of view, as explained on page 93. Detailed stratigraphic studies in the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa district have made it possible to map the folds and faults that controlled the deposition of the zinc-lead ore. Prospecting on the basis of this mapping and prospecting in lower zones that are potentially ore-bearing have led to discoveries of ore. GEOLOGIC studies for the Federal and State governments in the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa zinc-lead district were begun in 1835, and subsequent surveys were made in the three states at intervals until 1916, see Table I. The current study of the district, Fig. 1, by the U. S. Geological Survey was begun in 1942 in the hope that a systematic investigation would help increase production of zinc and lead, then in extremely short supply. Major emphasis of the USGS program was on detailed mapping of the geologic structure and ore deposits. Preliminary maps and reports covering localities of intensive mining activity have been published during the course of this study, Fig. 2. By 1950 the objectives of the study by the USGS were revised; 71/2-min quadrangles of relatively unprospected localities as well as intensively mined localities are now being mapped in Wisconsin. Since 1945 the investigation in Wisconsin has been made in cooperation with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, and since 1951 the geologic mapping of areas of particular interest in Iowa has been performed in cooperation with the Iowa Geological Survey. At intervals since 1943 the Illinois State Geological Survey has mapped the geologic structure and ore deposits of localities in the Illinois part of the mining district, see Fig. 2. Geology was applied by mining company personnel as early as 1853, but only sporadically, with periods of greater application between 1890 and 1925. Much of the so-called geologic work was in reality mining engineering. Since 1946 the major mining companies in the district have employed geologists who have successfully applied geologic techniques in the search for ore. History of Mining Occurrence of galena in the district was known as early as 1658 or 1659, when French explorers heard of lead mines that were apparently in the vicinity of Dubuque, Iowa. In 1690 a trading post was established near Dubuque to obtain galena. The first significant attempt at mining by white men took place in 1788 when the Indians granted to Julien Dubuque mining rights for 20 miles along the west side of the Mississippi River, including the vicinity of Dubuque, Iowa. By 1805 lead was being mined near Galena, Ill. In 1819 permanent settlement of the region was begun, and most of the important lead-producing areas had been found by 1830, see Fig. 3. Lead production in the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa district between 1830 and 1871 far exceeded that of any other district in the U. S.&apos; Smithsonite was first mined in 1859, and sphalerite was mined as early as 1867. After 1873 the production of sphalerite exceeded that of smithsonite. In 1873 annual zinc production from the district first equaled lead production, and from then until 1893 production of zinc and lead was roughly the same. Since 1893 the ratio of zinc to lead mined has generally ranged between 5:l and 20:l. In 1942 the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa zinc-lead district ranked 14th among zinc-producing districts of the U. S. EXAMINATION by metallographic and X-ray diffraction means of an austenitic steel containing 0.06 pct C, 1.26 pct Mn, 0.38 pct Si, 21.15 pct Ni, 18.72 pct Cr, 3.07 pet W, and 9.14 pet Mo indicated that a - phase, which had not been reported in the literature, existed in this steel. Both the s and car-bides of the M6 C type were present in the as-forged steel. The carbides dissolved completely in the aus-tenite at approximately 2200°F (1205°C). The s, however, was present at all temperatures up to the solidus temperature of the steel at approximately 2375°F (1300°C). Ferrite was not found in any condition of the steel. The faintness of some of the s lines in X-ray patterns obtained from samples of the steel made it desirable to isolate the s prior to verification of its entire pattern. FOR many years the cost of making pig iron and steel in the Birmingham district has been about the lowest in the United States. The close proximity of the important raw materials such as coal, iron ore, limestone, and the large available scrap supply made it possible to assemble all of the important ingredients necessary for steel- making with only nominal costs for transportation. Both iron ore and coal were being mined in this district at one time for about $1 per ton from underground operations. At that time mining wages were low everywhere and the labor rate in the South was considerably below that of other mining districts. This situation persisted until the emergence of labor unions as an economic and political force, emigation of southern labor to northern plants, and continued growth of industry in the South in the years following the depression of 1932. Since that time union organizing of miners and steel workers throughout the nation has increased labor costs in mining and steelmaking. This influence has been felt particularly in underground mining operations since the proportion of labor cost to total cost is still high. The previous advantage in basic labor rate in the South has been almost entirely eliminated by the equalization of labor rates in basic industries by national unions. Since 1945 these influences have been especially noticeable in increasing the cost of mining coal and iron ore in the South. The northern steel districts are still being largely supplied with iron ore from the Minnesota open-pit mines and the cost of this ore has not increased nearly as much as the cost of ore obtained from underground mines in Birmingham. A similar situation exists in coal mining; the thinner seams in Alabama are not so amenable to mechanization as the northern mines and, as a result, the output per man-day in southern mines is only about three tons of coal as compared to five or six tons per man-day in the large captive mines of West Vir-

1. Introduction.-The first part of this papers treats of the causes and the restraining of piping in steel ingots; the second& considers the causes and the restraining of -segregation; and the third proposes certain precautions in engineering specifications concerning these two defects. Into their causes I have looked carefully, with the purpose of arriving at rational methods of restraining them, and at efficient ways of detecting. and measuring the harm which they cause, so as to benefit the public by reducing this harm at once effectively and with the least expense to the manufacturer, and therefore in the end with the least expense to the consumer. In Part I., I infer that the pipe is chiefly due to what I, call the virtual expansion of the outer walls of the ingot in the early part of the freezing. I find that the upper and smooth-faced part of the pipe probably forms while the interior is still molten, but that the lower, steep, and crystal-faced part probably forms in metal which is already firm. Of the five causes which may co-operate to limit the depth of the pipe, I find that three-blow-holes, sagging, and the progress of freezing from below upwards-are usually effective. I find that the pipe may be lessened by casting (1) in wide ingots,; (2) in sand molds, especially if these are pre-heated (this is rarely expedient); (3) at the tops instead of at the bottom; (4) slowly; (5) and with the large end up; (6) by the use of a sinking-head or other means of retarding the cooling of the top; (7) by permitting blow-holes to form; and (8) by liquid compression.) Most of these I consider in some detail, and in particular I dwell on the advantages of casting with the large end up, and I propose certain administrative arrangements to permit this.

Discussion of the paper of Edward Keller, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 2093 to 2115. GEORGE L. HEATH, Hubbell, Mich.:-In the admirable paper quoted, is mentioned the date when the 5-g. assay was first proposed is a standard for refined metal. The author omitted, however, to mention a later paper,1 which contains a proposal for the use of a single " stock solution " of mixed acids, which has been adopted by the American Brass Co. and others. The suggestion is made that such a scheme would save time and manipulation with converter metal. Unless the low current of 0.5 ampere and the large excess of nitric acid, recommended by Mr. Keller, have been proved necessary to hold up antimony-and selenium, the use of the mixed solution which we have adopted will permit the use of 1 ampere of current per square decimeter of cathode surface, until the solutions have become colorless. At this point, we wash the covers and reduce to 0.5 ampere to prevent oxidation or contamination. The ordinary split electrodes have been used. With strong current, at least, the use of an excess of nitric acid tends to the neutralization of the solution before the end of the period, from the formation of too much ammonia., and this is detrimental. Antimony deposits more easily than arsenic, and tends to drag the latter dorm with it. There must, be some such explanation for the fact. that we have made hundreds of deposits of pure cathodes from Lake material containing no antimony, but as. high as 0.5 per cent. of arsenic. By placing an assay beaker in the Frary solenoid, or rotary device, a cathode deposit with less than 0.01 per cent. of impurity is easily obtained in one operation from 3 g. of whitneyite, carrying from 7 to 10 per cent. of arsenic. In such a case, it is necessary to test several times for end point and remove the plate as soon as no brown tint appears (at once) when hydrogen sulphide water is added to the test portion on the spot plate.
