Single crystals of hcp cobalt, 3 mm in diameter and up to 35 cm long, were grown using an electron-beam, zone-melting technique. The martensitic-phase transformation was studied in single-crystalline and polycrystalline specimens by making length-change measurements as a function of temperature under various elastic compressive stresses. Upon thermal cycling, single-crystalline or polycrystalline specimens repeatedly transformed almost entirely on the same variant of close-packed plane provided the maximum temperature did not exceed 600°C. Cycling to 1000°C resulted in transformation on more than one {111} variant. This behavior is termed multivariance. The multivariant transformation occurred very rapidly at an M, temperature 2° to 6°C lower than the M, of a transformation which would result in a single-crystal product. Elastic compressive stresses (up to 253 g per sq mm) tended to lower the A, and raise the M, temperatures, decreasing the width of the temperature vs dilatation hysteresis loop. The transformation habit plane and transformation shear direction of an as-grown single crystal were not grossly affected by elastic compressi?ie stress. This was evidenced by similar dilatations on the temperature us dilatation loops joy specimens with and without compressive stress. A dislocation mechanism is proposed to explain the observed results. IT has been shown that, on heating, cobalt transforms martensitically from the hcp to the fcc phase.' The transformation habit plane is (0001)hcp || (lll)fcc and the transformation shear direction is (1010)hcp || (112)fcc. The transformation involves a shear of 1g°28', which may be achieved by a shearing of a/6(112) of every two planes with respect to the plane beneath, thus changing the ABABAB stacking of hcp to the ABCABC stacking of fcc. Associated with the phase change is a 0.3 x 10"3 contraction in the habit plane and a 4.2 X 10"3 expansion perpendicular to the habit plane resulting in a 3.6 x X volume increase on heating.' On cooling, an identical volume decrease takes place. The temperature at which the fcc phase begins to form on heating (A,) is reported as 430°C, and the temperature at which the hcp phase begins to form on cooling from an elevated temperature (A&) is reported as 390oC1,3 Consequently, temperature vs dilatation plots have the form of a hysteresis loop. If heating or cooling is reversed during a transformation, a smaller hysteresis loop results. Upon heating, the transformation is always complete; whereas, fcc is often retained at room temperature as a metastable phase entrapped in the polycrystal-line hexagonal matrix.1,4,5 Two obstacles in the theory of the allotropic-phase transformation of cobalt have been: 1) a detailed knowledge of the product nucleus, and 2) a plausible method of propagation of the transformation. Bilby,8 christian, 7 and seeger 8,9 have suggested a "pole mechanism" as a means of propagation of partiai dislocations from plane to plane. A pole dislocation and a Shockley partial come together at a node. The a/6(112) Shockley partial rotates about the pole dislocation effecting the transformation shear. The pole dislocation must have a 2a/3(111) screw component which causes extension of the transformed region by two atomic planes with each full rotation of the Shockley partial. Bollmannl0 suggested, on the other hand, that transformation propagation occurs due to the stress fields of intersecting (111)-type stacking faults. As faults intersect, a stress distribution is set up about their intersection which is in turn reduced by the emergence of another fault on the second nearest plane. This process continues with the final result of a complete phase transformation. In view of the similarities between deformation and transformation in cobalt, the effect of stress on the transformation would, hopefully, yield valuable information concerning nucleation and propagation. In the present work single-crystalline and polycrystalline specimen length changes were measured as a function of temperature at various compressive loads. PROCEDURE Several orientations of single crystals of hcp cobalt in lengths up to 25 cm were grown by electron-beam floating zone melting from 99.95 and 99.999 pct, 3-mm-diam cobalt rod as supplied by Johnson

The rate of CaO dissolution into slag melts is of great importance in the field of pyrometallurgy. In this study the mechanism of CaO dissolution has been investigated by observing the melt heated on Pt-filament directly through microscope together with a help of X-ray micro analyser to find out a distribution of each element around CaO crystal. The direct observation reveals that the CaO dissolution tends to proceed by the action of molten slag entering between CaO crystal and newly formed 2Ca0. Si02 layer through cracks. The effect of slag composition on the formation of 2CaO- SiO2 layer will be shown as well as the effect of halogenides addition on the destruction of this compound layer.

I DESIRE to say that, owing to the number of papers which have been more or less crowded at this session of the Institute, and the fact that, as one of the Local Committee, I have the distinguished honor to feel somewhat like one of the hosts, I should not tax the patience of members at this late hour, but would have my paper read by title were it in any way possible to do this. But the task I have set myself this evening is to present to the eyes of the members of the Institute certain objects which have occupied more or less of my time during the last eighteen months or two years. The objects I allude to are some of the igneous rocks of this country, which, until quite recently, have been less understood than any others. It will be well known to some of the members that some of the cooled lavas of a previous age of our planet, when not directly coarsely crystalline and granular, were considered and spoken of as " natural glasses," or perfectly uncrystalline, vitreous, or hyaline masses of matter. Among the first results of the use of the microscope was the dispersion of this fallacy. Sir David Brewster, Mr. H. C. Sorby, and William Nichol (the discoverer of the celebrated calcite prism, which bears his name), had, with greater or less success, examined sections of various rocks and minerals, both by transmitted and reflected light, and also in the form of powder. But, until the genius of Vogelsang undertook the subject, these investigations had no permanent value, nor did they constitute an independent line of mineralogical and geological research. Since the close of his labors, by Vogelsang's premature and much-lamented death, the subject has been made one of renewed interest by his brother-in-law, Ferdinand Zirkel, as well as by Rosenbusch, Tschermak, and many others abroad, and at home by the commencement of a systematic study of the traps of Connecticut by Messrs. E. D. Dana and G. W. Hawes, of New Haven, and by the splendid set of described sections of the traps of the West which have been furnished by Zirkel to illustrate Clarence King's report. I had the honor of presenting a large number of thin sections of our traps at the Washington meeting, for the inspection of the members, with the aid of a table microscope belonging to the Smithsonian Institution. Few authors of treatises and papers on engineering subjects hare given adequate attention to topographic maps. The statement applies especially to mining engineering in all branches. Even those who have discussed such maps have treated the subject only in a general way. Therefore it is proposed to outline in this paper a few of the uncommon yet important relationships which topographic maps and their by-product, structure-contour maps, have to modern methods of mining investigation and development when the facts depicted on such maps are properly interpreted. Topography, as suggested by the etymology of the word, means a detailed description of particular places. Written descriptions have been found less effective than the pictorial representations, therefore attempts have been made in various ways to picture the surface features of places. Lines and shading have been used, hachures drawn, and, finally, the contour topographic map. To a large extent this style of map is the result of the demands of engineers. It is designed to meet their needs far more than those of the man untrained in engineering. In fact,. the average man obtains a better idea of the topography of an area from the hachure system than from contour maps. Since the maps have been made chiefly for the use of the engineer, they ought to meet his demands on the one hand, and, on the other, should be used by him to the fullest extent. Such maps, when properly made, accurately portray a portion of the earth's surface and should present the topography better than a personal examination of the area without a map could present it, because the person making such examination views only a limited portion of the surface at a time, and estimates distances only roughly with his eye. Let the engineer consider carefully the fact that in many instances the topographic map is superior to a personal examination of the surface features of a property because the map is based on careful instrumental measurements, whereas the eye gives imperfect data because it can be used merely for the estimation and

This, report represents the comments of the individual members of the A. I. M. E. Sub-committee on Physics of Mine Ventilation on the proposals of a special committee of the Institution of Mining Engineers (London). As might be expected, there is a certain diversity of opinions, for owing to the shortness of time- it was not possible for the sub-committee to get together for informal discussion. The report is presented in this form in the hope that it will bring out a full discussion by other members in the Institute. OLE SINGSTAD?, New York, N. Y.-The Atkinson formula, P =SV2 K a is quoted and it is stated that this formula is especially applicable to mine galleries but is unwieldy in application, as in many problems the value of K, S and a are assumed not to change. This is the same formula that was used during the preliminary calculations for the ventilation of the Holland Tunnel, and where the above-mentioned values were constant for a number of cases, it was a very simple matter to rewrite the equation n the form P = K1V2 and avoid the repeated use of identical figures. The Atkinson formula assumes 1. That resistance to flow is independent of the pressure. 2. Changes in volume due to change in pressure may be neglected. 3. Changes in density and viscosity may be neglected. 4. That the coefficient K is a constant. 5. That P is proportional to V2. We found, from our experiments in connection with the ventilation of the Holland Tunnel, that all the above assumptions could be safely made, with the exception of No. 3, and No. 4 at, very low velocities. In mine work, where many assumptions must necessarily be made, it would seem inconsistent to attempt to make any allowance for the other factors, which are so small that they can be determined only by the most careful experimental work. However, P does depend directly on the density of the air, and to that extent the Atkinson formula is incomplete.

INTRODUCTION The Salvador Division of Codelco Chile is an important copper molybdenum production center, located 1,200 km north of Santiago and 124 km east of the Pacific Ocean, in the foothills of the Andes Range. El Salvador Mine produces by block caving 8,600,000 t of ore with a content of 1 .l0% Cu and 0.02% Mo, from a copper porphyry ore body. The geology of the ore body shows a great heterogeneity as to rocks, grade distribution, ore height and undercutting levels. This has resulted in a variety of designs for the productive units (blocks) and in the mineral handling systems. Up to now, 4 systems have been employed: grizzly and intermediate haulage; slusher drifts with intermediate ore pass and haulage; slusher drifts with scraper loading directly into trains; and, LHD. On the other hand there is a marked dispersion in the final results from each block mined out. We report here the conclusions reached after analyzing the data gathered on the mining of 163 depleted blocks, representing a total production of 102,000,000 t, with an undercut area of 340,000 sq m. The final results of each block, characterized in terms of tonnage and fine cop- per recovery, were studied as a function of a number of design, geological, and operational parameters. BASIC CONCEPTS Indices of Efficiency In order to evaluate the final result of each block, or group of blocks, the following indices of efficiency were defined : Tonnage Recovery (TR) . It is the ratio between the ore tonnage extracted and the in situ tonnage estimate for each block or group of blocks. Grade efficiency (E) . It is the ratio between the Cu mill feed grade and the in situ Cu grade estimate for each block or group of blocks. Grade efficiency is numerically equal to the ratio between fine copper recovery (FR) and tonnage recovery (TR) . Figure 1 shows the final results for 163 mined out blocks, in terms of tonnage and fine copper recovery. Different grade efficiencies are also indicated. The marked dispersion in the final results of mined out blocks must be stressed since it greatly incides in mine planning. It must be kept in mind that an eventual concentration of low overall efficiency in the blocks during a given period (e.g., one year) will make it necessary to bring into production new blocks over the standard development schedule. It is worth noting that the final results in the 163 mined out blocks corresponding to a production of 102,000,000 t of ore with a mill feed grade of 1.445% were obtained from an ore estimate of 93,000,000 t and a grade of 1.671% Cu, which represents 110% tonnage recovery and 86% grade efficiency. Parameters Studied The following parameters are considered in this study: Geological Parameters. These parameters depend exclusively on the geological and geotechnical features of the ore body. IN SITU GRADE: The initial estimate of the block grade. Four copper grade categories were considered : (a) lower than 1.3% ; (b) 1.3 to 1.6%; (c) 1.6 to 2.0%; (d) higher than 2.0%. The overall initial in situ estimate of the ore body was 1.6% Cu. IN SITU TONNAGE: Initial tonnage estimate of the block. Four categories are considered: (a) below 500,000 t; (b) 500,000 to 1,000,000 t (c) 1,000,000 to 1,500,000 t; (d) over 1,500,000 t. CONTACTS SLOPE: Since up to 4 rock types can be found in a block, resulting in a corresponding number of contacts, a horizontal con- tact was defined as that which forms an angle of less than 45" with the horizontal and a vertical contact that which forms an angle of more than 45" with the horizontal. GRADE DISTRIBUTION: As in rock types, horizontal and vertical grades were defined. ORE HEIGHT: The distance measured between the undercut level and the top of ore. Four categories are considered: (a) less than 60 m; (b) 60 to 100 m; (c) 100 to 150 m; (d)over 150 m

This is the third paper in a series on the diffusion of zinc in alpha brass.' At the time of the first paper it was accepted that diffusion in a substitutional type of solid solution depended upon an equal interchange of solute and solvent atoms across the diffusion interface (or past a given lattice reference point). Discrepancies in the size of the areas under the diffusion curves on each side of the interface, if observed, were explained on some other basis than the fact that the solute atoms might cross the diffusion interface without an equal number of solvent atoms diffusing across the interface in the opposite direction. The second paper presented evidence indicating that zinc atoms in alpha brass diffuse across the interface more rapidly in one direction than the copper atoms diffuse across the interface in the opposite direction. This phenomenon forced the interface to move in the opposite direction of the diffusion of zinc atoms to provide space for the additional zinc atoms dissolved in the alpha brass. That the interface and columnar grain structure on one side would remain intact during this mass movement was not expected; how ever, it is gratifying that they did. While the evidence was sufficiently satisfying to the author, it was decided that additional experiments were in order to prove that zinc diffuses more rapidly than copper in alpha brass. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results of these experiments. Procedure A bar of 70-30 wrought brass was selected, to avoid the relatively large volume change in going from beta to alpha brass as in the previous investigation. A bar 7 in. (18-cm.)* long and about 3/4 in. (1.9 cm.) wide was surface ground and polished with abrasive paper on plate glass to 0.4184 0.0002 in. (1.062j + 0.0005 cm.) thick. Six0.00j-in. (0.013-cm.) diameter molybdenum wires, chosen because of their very low solubility in coppcr and alpha brass, were strctched lengthwise along each of the two plane surfaces. Glass tubes placed at right angles to the wires every 1/2 in. held the wires tightly against the brass. The sample was then emersed in an acid copper sulphate plating bath and electroplated to a depth of about 0.020 in. (0.050 cm.) copper on all sides. THERE was once a time when a practical oil man would appraise or buy a producing property on the basis of from $200 to $500 per barrel of average daily settled production. Curtailment-has, for the present at least, caused a virtual abandonment of the "barrel -of settled production" as a yardstick of, oil property value and in its place has come the "barrel of allowable production," which, although an artificial thing, is nevertheless now the principal factor governing the rate of ?pay out? or investment return. The potential production of a well, settled or otherwise, is of less importance in determining the present worth of a well than is the rate at which it may be produced. Speaking only of true potential for the moment, it is obvious that of two similar wells having the same potential, the one having the highest rate of allowable production would be worth proportionately more than the one of lesser allowable. The discount factor for deferred return and risk can easily vary the present values of the two wells by as much as 20 per cent when allowable rates are not greatly different.

The formation of austenite from ferrite, ferrite plus retastable carbide, spheroidite, and pearlite has been studied in a series of irons, Fe-C alloys, and plain-carbon steels using fast heating techniques. In the absence of carbide, austenite nucleates at ferrite/ferrite grain boundaries; nucleation is followed by the rapid growth characteristic of a massive transfornation. The trarnsformation occurs at 950°C at heating rates of 106º C per sec and cannot be suppressed. Metastable carbide dissolves before austenite forms and does not influence the transformation kinetics. For spheroidite structures, austenite nucleates preferentially at the jinction between carbides and ferrite grain boundaries. Growth from these centers proceeds until the carbide is completely enveloped; subsequent growth occurs by carbon diffusion through the austenite envelope. For pearlite structures, austenite nucleates preferentially at pearlite colony intersections. Carbide la)?zellae dissolve at the advancing austenite interface but complete solution of carbide does not occur; the residtial carbide is eventually dissolvled or spheroid-ized depending on the carbon cuntent. The magnitude and temperature dependence of the austenite growth rate into Fe-C pearlite when incomplete carbide dissolution is assumed are satisfactorily explained by an approximate colume diffusion model. The impurities present in plain-carbon steel reduce the growth rate of austenite in comparison to that jound in an Fe-C alloy. The formation of austenite has been studied in much less detail than the decomposition of austenite. This is primarily a result of the importance of harden-ability in determining the mechanical properties of steel. Recently, more interest in the kinetics of austenite formation has resulted from the discovery by Grange1 that rapid heating techniques strengthen steel by refining the austenite grain size. Although the strengthening effect is not large, it is accompanied by no loss in ductility. In addition, interest continues in rapid heat treatment of low-carbon steel sheet for tin plate applications.2,3 Among the few systematic studies of austenite formation are the early work of Roberts and Mehl4 on formation of austenite from pearlite and recent work of Molinder5 and of Judd and paxton6 on formation of austenite from spheroidite. Also, Boedtker and Duwez7 and Haworth and paar8 have recently studied the formation of austenite from ferrite in relatively pure iron, Kidin et al.9,10 have studied the formation of austenite in 8 pct Cr steels, and Paxton has recently discussed various aspects of austenite formation in steels." The present work was undertaken to determine the kinetics of austenite formation for a variety of starting structures including ferrite, ferrite plus metastable carbide, ferrite plus spheroidal cementite, and ferrite plus pearlitic cementite. Emphasis was placed on determining the active sites for austenite nucleation, determining the temperature and time range of austenite formation, and in the case of pearlite a careful study of the growth rate of austenite was made in the absence and presence of impurities. By using a variety of heating techniques including laser-pulse heating, it has been possible to study austenite formation in an isothermal fashion over a wide range of temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys studied in the present work are a zone-refined iron with 4 pprn C, an Fe-C alloy with 130 pprn C, 2 Fe-C alloys with 0.77 and 0.96 wt pct C, and a plain carbon steel with 0.96 wt pct C. The zone-refined iron and Fe-C alloys contained 60 pprn and 200 pprn total substitutional impurities, respectively. The plain carbon steel contained 2400 pprn Si, 2000 pprn Mn, and 900 pprn Cr. Various heat treatments were given to these alloys to produce different starting structures of equiaxed ferrite, ferrite plus metastable carbide, fine pearlite, and spheroidite. These heat treatments are given in Table I. A wide range of heating rates were employed in this work because many of the reactions occur so quickly at temperatures in the austenite range that they are completed during the initial heating cycle unless very fast heating rates are used. Essentially the same heating techniques employed by Speich et a1.12 and Speich and Fisher13 were used in this work. For time intervals of 2 sec to 20 hr, simple hand immersion of 0.010-in. thick specimens in a Pb-Bi bath was employed. These specimens were quenched in a 10 pct NaC1, 2 pct NaOH aqueous bath. For time intervals of 100 m-sec to 2 sec, an automatic dunking and quenching device was employed with 0.002-in. thick specimens. Again, liquid Pb-Bi baths were used for a heating medium but now helium gas quenching was employed. For time intervals of 2 to 100 m-sec a laser heating device was employed with 0.002-in. thick specimens; a helium plus fine water-droplet spray was now used for quenching. Additional information on heating times shorter than 2 m-sec was obtained by study of the zones around the centrally heated laser spot. Here diffusion of heat from the centrally heated zone raises the temperature of the specimen locally to all temperatures between ambient and the peak temperature, but for times of the order of microseconds. Many of you who are interested in the manufacture of iron and steel, have no doubt heard of the "Wheeler process for combining iron and steel." Mr. Wheeler has formed a company, styled the "Combination Trust Company," whose business is to grant licenses for the use of this patent process in producing what he calls "iron-clad steel." It has been proposed to apply it in the manufacture of car or wagon axles, also to shafting, having steel cores or centres covered with iron; to tubes of steel with an inner and outer skin of iron ; to structural purposes, such as girders and beams; bridge and tie-bolts, where the strength of the iron and the rigidity of the steel would be desirable. In answer to a request from Mr. Wheeler, permission mas accorded him to make some experiments at the rolling mill of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company, at Reading, Pennsylvania, with a view to manufacturing some steel-headed rails. In making this kind of a rail two difficulties are encountered. If the iron is brought to the requisite heat to weld properly, the steel is likely to be burned; if the steel is cared for, to prevent burning, the several layers of iron are not brought up to the proper welding heat. Mr. Wheeler claimed that the steel slab covered with iron which he furnished for the head of the rail could net be injured by any heat to which it might be subjected in the ordinary course of heating the rail-pile. He claimed, also, that by this method the porosity, which he thought was characteristic of all solid rails of Bessemer steel, would be overcome. Four steel slabs were furnished for this experiment, being Bessemer steel of .61 carbon, made at the Edgar Thomson Steel Works, and covered with iron in one of the Pittsburgh mills. The slabs were in section seven inches wide by three inches thick, and the iron covering was one-eighth to three-sixteenths inch thick. THE copper-bearing sulphide ores from the mines in Butte, Mont., which are for the most part concentrated at the Boston & Montana duction Works in Great Falls and at the Washoe Reduction Works in Anaconda, contain the following minerals of economic value: Chalcocite, Cu2S; enargite, Cu3AsS4; cupriferous pyrite; bornite, Cu3FeS3; covellite, CUS; tetrahedrite, 4 CuS2Sb2S3; and tennantite, Cu8AsS7;. All of the ores carry a high percentage of pyrite. Many of the above sulphides are argentiferous and also carry from 10 to 20 cts. per ton in gold. The gangue is quartz and highly altered granite, with sphalerite and galena and more rarely barite and hubnerite as accessory minerals. An average chemical analysis of the second-class ore concentrated at Great Falls and Anaconda would be as follows: Copper 3.2 to 3.4 per cent. Silver 2. 3 to 3.0 oz. per ton. DURING the last few years several papers1-' have been published in which internal friction measurements have been used to determine the quantity of carbon or nitrogen dissolved in a iron. This method is based on the fact that, in pure Fe-N and Fe-C alloys, nitrogen and carbon cause peaks in the internal friction vs. temperature curve; at a frequency of 1 cycle per sec (cps) these peaks appear at $-200 and +360C, respectively, and if internal friction is expressed as Q-1, which is equal to times the logarithmic decrement, this figure will, by coincidence, give the weight percentage of nitrogen or carbon in solid solution.' In most of the studies published, very pure iron (Puron) was used. In one case the influence of manganese on the behavior of nitrogen in a iron was mentioned.4 It would be of great value, especially for the study of aging and related phenomena, if this method could be applied to commercial mild steel with norrnal percentages of manganese, phosphorus, sulphur, etc. As a rule, in such steels carbon and nitrogen are present together, and the amounts of these elements in solid solution should preferably be determined separately. The fact that their internal friction peaks appear at different temperatures (+36° and + 20°C in pure iron) seems promising for such a selective determination. It is necessary, however, that the peaks are narrow enough not to interfere with one another, and further, that there is no effect from carbon on the behavior of nitrogen in stress induced diffusion, and vice versa. According to Fast,' however, in the presence of manganese the nitrogen peak gets wider and appears at a higher temperature nearer the carbon peak, and thus the prospects for selective determination are reduced. (The carbon peak was not affected by the presence of manganese.) But even if fully quantitative de- terminations of the two elements are not attained, some relative figures on the sum of them and an indication of which one is the predominant one, would be of value. Some results from experiments along these lines will be reported here. An internal friction measuring device was assembled mainly following a description by KG." The measurements were also carried out as reported in that paper. Table I gives the chemical compositions of the four different materials used in this investigation. All materials were drawn to wires with diameter about 0.8 mm, and the analyses refer to these final shapes. Determination of Nitrogen Peak Wires from steels A, B, and C were decarburized in wet hydrogen (about 30 pct H2O) at 700°C until no carbon or nitrogen could be found by chemical analysis. No peak was then found in the internal friction. The wires were further annealed at 580°C for 16 hr in hydrogen bubbled through a solution of 6.8 pct NH3 in distilled water. Chemical analyses gave 0.04 pct N in A and C, and 0.06 pct in B. After annealing at 580°C for 15 min in a lead bath and water quenching, the internal friction was immediately measured. The resulting curves are shown in Fig. 1. At these high values of the internal friction the accuracy is comparatively poor; at Q-1 - 0.030 it is estimated to be 0.002. In order to make possible a calculation of the activation energy for diffusion of nitrogen, measurements were made at two different frequencies. Steel A shows rather broad peaks, and their temperatures can hardly be expected to be very accurate. Steels B and especially C are better in this respect. This treatise is the sequel of a paper on "Russell's Improved Process for the Lixiviation of Silver-ores," etc., read at the Chicago meeting, in May, 1884, and published in the Transactions, vol. xiii., page 47. The facts it presents are principally compiled from Mr. Russell's notes on his practical experience gained in various places where the Russell process has been introduced. For a complete understanding of this paper a perusal of my former one is desirable, as can be seen from the frequent references here made to it. All silver-ores that do not carry a large percentage of lead or copper can be treated by Russell's process with success and economy. I do not mean to create the impression that from ores containing considerable quantities of lead and copper a high percentage of the silver cannot be extracted by this process. Such ores, however, will, in many localities, be reduced to better advantage by smelting. In case lead-bearing silver-ores are suitable for concentration, it may be profitable to concentrate the ore by Krom's dry system, obtaining a smelting-product high in lead, and to lixiviate the tailings and the dust. This plan has been adopted in a mill recently erected in Cortez District, Nevada. The dry system of concentration deserves the preference because it delivers the tailings and the dust in a condition ready for chloridizing-roasting. In wet concentration the drying of the tail ings would be expensive, and there would be a considerable loss of silver in slimes. Oxidized ores, containing silver chloride and lead minerals, may be lixiviated after crushing, and the tailings may be concentrated for lead. In this case wet concentration would be most suitable. This has been done at the Old Telegraph Mine, Utah. I would give, however, the preference to dry concentration in all cases which, of course, requires that concentration should precede lixiviation. One of the most complicated and potentially one of the most promising secondary recovery methods is that of underground combustion. A number of field tests1,2,3 have been performed recently, apparently indicating that the underground combustion process is technically feasible. Relatively little has been published concerning laboratory or theoretical investigations of the underground combustion process. A few results of laboratory tube runs have been published4,5 and these data are valuable in understanding the process. The tube run data also emphasize the complexity of the thermal recovery process. Under various conditions, problems in heat transfer, multiphase fluid flow and combustion rates arise. For example, at low temperatures the combustion process proceeds so slowly that the front cannot be propagated. It is a problem in heat transfer to predict what injection rate of air is necessary to sustain combustion in a particular reservoir. Certain fluid flow aspects of underground combustion have been studied by Wilson, et a13. In the development of some of the flow equations, assumptions of adiabatic combustion were made. Vogel and Krueger1 have devised an analog model of the heat conduction process for a constant temperature cylindrical source moving radially outward in a homogeneous conducting medium. Jenkins and Ramey7, in a discussion of the Vogel and Krueger paper, present an analytical solution of a heat conduction problem related to problems considered by Vogel and Krueger. In the present paper an idealized model of the heat conduction problem is considered, which is more general than the model of Vogel and Krueger or Jenkins and Ramey. In particular, initial well heating, vertical heat losses and arbitrary frontal velocities are included. Equations for the temperature are obtained in terms of integrals. These integrals have been evaluated numerically for the case of frontal movement corresponding to a constant air injection rate and the case of constant frontal velocity. These results are presented graphically. From these graphs one may estimate conditions under which nearly adiabatic temperatures are obtained. The application of these results requires some knowledge of reservoir thermal properties, combustion rates and residual fuel content. Assuming no vertical losses it is possible to obtain explicit evaluations of these integrals in the linear con- stant velocity case and in the radial case corresponding to a constant air injection rate. PRESENTATION OF RESULTS The geometry of the radial system is illustrated in Fig. 1 where the reservoir is represented as a slab of thickness h. By making an energy balance for an infinitesimal volume, one obtains the following equation. T= x T+F(z.r).........(1) where F (z,r) =HWv1/pc (r-r1), if z h/2 = 0, if z >h/2 . In Eq. 1, V- represents the Laplacian operator and 8 is the Dirac delta function. Eq. 1 is the well-known diff-sion equation with a source term and may be applied to a linear system. For example, if the source is moving in the direction of the x axis, then the argument of the delta function is x - 1,. In deriving Eq. 1 the following approximations were made concerning the actual combustion process: (1) all heat transfer is by conduction in a homogeneous medium, (2) the formations bounding the reservoir have the same thermal properties as the reservoir, (3) the combustion fuel is consumed instantaneously as the front arrives, (4) there is a constant fuel concentration

The present Paper extends the previous work on cold reduced, low carbon steels to preferred orientations developed after various heat treatments. In recrystal-lized rimmed steel, cube-on-comer orientations increased with cold reductions up to 80 pct. Above that {111}<112> and a partial fiber texture with (1,6,11) in the rolling direction dominated. During grain growth, cube-on-corner orientations have been observed to grow at the expense of {210}<00l>. In re-crystallized Si-Fe (111) (112) and cube-on-edge type orientations are dominant near the surface and the (1,6,11) texture near the midplane for reductions up to 60 pct. With larger reductions {111)}<112> and the (1,6,11) texture are dominant. In cross rolled capped steel a relationship of 30 deg rotation was observed between the (100)[011] of the rolling texture and the main orientations after re crystallization. Most orientations present in recrystallized specimens can be related to components of the rolling texture by one of the following rotations: a) 25 to 35 deg about a (110) b) 55 deg about a (110) C) 30 deg about a (Ill) THE orientation texture of recrystallized steel is of interest where the product is to be deep drawn, because preferred orientation is related to anisotropy of mechanical properties such as the plastic strain ratio (r value);1,2 and in electrical steel applications where a high concentration of [loo] directions in the plane of the sheet improves the magnetic properties of the material. It is interesting to note that both these aims are to a large extent achieved commercially, even though the orientation texture of cold rolled steel does not show large variation3 and the recrystallized orientations are generally given as being related to the as rolled orientations mostly by 25 to 35 deg rotations about common (110) directions.4-6 There is, as yet, no single completely accepted theory on recrystallization. The three mechanisms that have been investigated and discussed are: a) Oriented growth b) Oriented nucleation c) Oriented nucleation, selective growth Largely from the observations of the recrystalliza-tion process by means of the electron microscope,7-11 there is now considerable evidence that the "nucleus" of the recrystallized grain is produced by the coalescence of a few subgrains to form a larger composite subgrain, which finally grows by high angle boundary migration into the deformed matrix. From the intensive work on the recrystallization of rolled single crystals of iron, Fe-A1 and Fe-Si al-loys4-" he following observations have been made: 1) The change in orientation during primary recrys-tallization can usually be described as a rotation of 25 to 36 deg about one of the (110) directions. 2) The (110) axes of rotation often coincide with poles of active (110) slip planes. 3) If several orientations are present in the cold rolled structure, the (110) axis of rotation will preferably be a (110) direction that is common to two or more of the orientations. 4) With larger amounts of cold reduction (70 pct or more) departure from these observations became more frequent. 5) After larger cold reductions, rotations on re-crystallization about (111) and (100) directions have been observed. K. Detert12 infers that a rotation relationship of 55 deg about (110) directions is also possible, by stating that the recrystallized orientation {111}<112> can form from the orientation {100}<011> of cold reduced partial fiber texture A.3 The observation by Michalak and schoone13 that (lll)[l10] formed during recrys-tallization in fully killed steel containing (111)[112],— as well as (001)[ 110] which is related to the {111}<011> by a 55 deg rotation about <110>-implies a possible 30 deg rotation relationship about the common [Ill]. Heyer, McCabe, and Elias14 have recrystallized rimmed steel after various amounts of cold reduction, by a rapid and by a slow heating cycle and found that the preferred orientations strengthened with increased cold reduction. The most pronounced orientation up to about 70 pct cold reduction was found to be {1 11}< 110>, after 80 pct cold reduction both {111}<110> and {111}<112>, after 85 and 90 pct cold reduction, {111}<112>, and after 97.5 pct cold reduction it was {111}<112> and (100)(012). In the present work, the orientation textures of the recrystallized specimens are examined under various conditions of steel composition, amount and method of cold reduction, and method of recrystallization. The relationships between the preferred orientations of the as rolled and recrystallized specimens, and the conditions for the formation of the various orientations during recrystallization are investigated.
