New economic forces are at work in the petroleum industry. In order to visualize these forces and to see clearly their bearing upon the producer, refiner, and marketer, it is necessary, first, to go back and gain a perspective of the economic evolution of the business. Early Trend to Integration For several decades prior to 1911, the outstanding feature of the petroleum industry was a trend toward integration, culminating in a huge combine, the Standard Oil Co. An important aspect of this integrative trend, however, was its concentration upon a combination and control of refining and marketing, leaving crude oil production, for the most part, to the exigencies of small-unit competition. It is a noteworthy coincidence that during this era the law of oil and gas was formulated and applied, whereby these substances had to be reduced to possession to establish ownership; and the forces of competition in crude oil production were thereby intensified. It was to the interest of an industry, safeguarded in its control of manufacturing and markets, to have supply stimulated by legal convention as well as by individual initiative in order that the growing demand could be met without interruption. And so overproduction of crude oil during this era was no handicap, but rather an aid, to the progress of the industry. Disintegration But the idea of superintegration, despite its efficiencies, became repugnant to the temper of the times and so the Standard Oil Co. was dissolved by Court decree—disintegrated into over 30 parts. And thus, in 1911, was ushered in the second era of the petroleum industry, a period of intense competition. This era coincided with the development of automotive transportation, and a tremendous growth resulted in the effort to keep pace with the mounting demand for gasoline. The mining industry is guaranteed an important future because its products are indispensable. However, this can be anything from a brilliant, efficient, profitable future to one of being a heavy-handed, dull-witted claimant for public handouts, according to the caliber and training of the young men who enter the industry. Many views have been expressed about the type of education needed for today's mining industry. Criticisms have been aired to the point that further controversy amongst ourselves could be detrimental to both mining education and the mining industry. It is time we get together and start going somewhere. To canvass the various attitudes of mining educators, a questionnaire was sent to a group of these dedicated, intelligent men, whose primary interest is to help the industry and the profession. The following is a summary of their views.

Arthur Yates, lecturer in the mining department of the Royal School of Mines, London, died at Blackpool, on Feb. 14, 1923, at the age of 47 years. My first acquaintance with him was made in 1902, when taking over the management of the Redjang Lebong gold mines in Sumatra, of which he was the responsible metallurgical officer. For that position he was well qualified by reason of his previous experience with the Rand Central Ore Reduction Co., in South Africa, and particularly by his early training with the Cassel Gold Extracting Co., owners of the MacArthur-Forrest patents, and the first commercial company formed to work the then recently discovered cyanide process; in this connection, Mr. Yates had the advantage of working under J. S. MacArthur himself. Our association in Sumatra was maintained for six years, when I left. Mr. Yates remained and was eventually promoted to the management of the neighboring Soelit mine. During those six years and in the close association inseparable from life in an isolated mining camp, the sterling qualities which made him so good a man were unmistakable: industry and interest in his work, patience with everybody, a quiet and unassuming demeanor. On the exhaustion of the mine to which he had been promoted, he returned to England in 1913. In 1914, the Mining Department of the Imperial College was fortunate in securing his services. Hardly, however, had he settled down when the war broke out and he spent some years in the Cleveland District promoting the efforts of the Government toward greater output. Returning to college in 1919, Mr. Yates met the full flood of Service students. The qualities which made him a man amongst men in the world made him a man among students in the college; a senior student if you like. But, unsuspected, a dread disease had fastened itself upon him, making itself felt for the first time during the summer course he was conducting in the South Wales coal field, in 1922. Against its relentless onset he opposed the bravest optimism, and when at last he realized that he was going under, and was in fact dying, his pronounced regret was that he was leaving the boys. In his death, at the age of forty-seven, staff and students in the Mining Department have experienced a great loss, that of a reliable friend, and their deepest sympathy goes out to the young widow and son in their irreparable loss. GROWTH of the United States to industrial supremacy in the world is mainly because of the rapid exploitation of natural resources. The easily found high grade mineral resources have been depleted and attention has turned to low-grade ores. Progress has been made from the comparatively crude mining and milling techniques, which sufficed for the rich deposits, to more complex technology for exploiting low-grade ores. In spite of this progress the defense program is pointing up the fact that the mining industry is caught short on ability to produce the needed mineral raw materials. The mining industry is digging itself out of business here in the United States.

NATURAL GAS was secured in the Trenton limestone near Findlay, Hancock County, in 1884, and oil in the following year. Drilling was rapid so that the production increased by leaps and bounds; in 1896, it exceeded 25,250,000 bbl., the maximum for the field. Since that time, the yield has decreased steadily and in 1921 was only 1,447,243 bbl. The territory extends as an arc of a circle from near the western end of Lake Erie southwest into Indiana, which it enters in Adams and Jay Counties. Sixteen counties are listed in Ohio but five of them combined had a new production of only 264 bbl. and they might well be omitted. Progress in the Trenton limestone field of northwest Ohio in 1923 is shown in Table 1.

ALTHOUGH there is now an extensive literature on the bleaching clays, not a great deal of material is to be found concerning the geological features of these deposits and their bearing on problems of exploration and development. At the same time, chemical and crystallographic research on the clay minerals during the past few years has laid a suitable foundation upon which to base conclusions of economic value drawn from field observations. All of the criteria and deductions herein presented are based upon extensive field work by the senior author, both in the United States and Canada, and when subjected to the ultimate tests of development and exploitation they have held up remarkably well, despite the fact that many of these conclusions apparently have not been reviewed in the literature heretofore. The nomenclature of the bleaching clays is rather confusing in the light of present-day commercial standards and has even led to litigation." The old term "fuller's earth" is largely based upon trade usage and the definition of the term therefore is dependent upon the changing standards of commerce. For statistical purposes the Bureau of Mines81 classes as "fuller's earth" all natural bleaching or filtering claylike materials that possess high adsorptive capacity without previous chemical treatmerit or activation. Conversely, the so-called activated or acid activated clays are now generally recognized as any clay mineral or mixture of the clay minerals whose adsorptive capacity has been developed to commercial standards by chemical or physical treatment. Therefore, without attempting to propose any additions to the nomenclature of bleaching clays, this paper will refer to naturally adsorptive clays and activable clays, respectively, for the two types indicated.

At the meeting of the Board of Directors held on October 25, the reports of the Treasurer and the Nominating and Finance Committees were received. Thirty-five members, seven associates, and six junior associates were elected; one change of status front junior associate to member was granted; six members were reinstated; and one resignation was accepted. An extension of' time was granted to fourteen members. The dues of forty-seven members were suspended on account of their being in active service. The application for formation of a Houghton Section was granted and the president was authorized to appoint a committee on organization. The courtesies of the Institute were extended to visiting engineers of France, Great Britain and Italy who are at present in the country on war missions. Votes of thanks were extended to the Committees of the .Milwaukee meeting. The proposed Survey of Engineering Organizations by Engineering. Foundation was approved. The Secretary was authorized to publish in the Bulletin an appeal from the American Ouvroir Funds. A petition signed by 110 members of the-Institute to change the name of the Institute was presented. Treasurer George C. Stone resigned on account of contemplated absence from the city, and George D. Barron was elected Treasurer in his place. Mr. Alexandre Gouvy, a distinguished French engineer, then addressed the Board.

With a growth of 718 per cent in the petroleum industry from 1901 to 1931, there was a corresponding increase in the demand for technically trained men in the industry. This was first met by increasing numbers of college graduates from the old established courses in chemistry, geology and engineering. However, a need began to be felt for scientists and engineers specially trained for the petroleum industry. In 1912 the University of Pittsburgh established the first department in any university in the world that offered major work in petroleum engineering and petroleum geology. In Europe, the first major work in petroleum engineering was offered in England in 1913 at the University of Birmingham. The University of California and Stanford University offered major work in petroleum engineering in 1915. Since that time at least 10 other American universities and colleges have offered major work and at least 12 others are now offering some courses dealing with petroleum and the petroleum industry.

THE Hollinger gold mine is in the Porcupine mining division, District of Cochrane, in the northern part of the Province of Ontario. The adjacent town of Timmins, with a population of 25,119, lies 490 miles by railway north of the city of Toronto. GEOLOGY The property is situated on the northwest limb of a major syncline, which pitches northeast at approximately 50°. The principal rocks of the Hollinger area are of pre-Cambrian age and consist of altered, schistose, Keewatin lava flows intruded by stocks of schistose, quartzfeldspar porphyry generally assigned to the Algoman period. The structure of the Keewatin series is extremely complex as a result of close folding and some faulting. The schistosity, trending north 70° east and dipping steeply to the southeast, is most highly developed along a subsidiary anticline in which the major porphyry bodies occur. The ore bodies, which exhibit three principal structures, consist of quartz veins and associated pyritized wall rock. Some lodes are composed of en echelon veins, others exhibit a main quartz body with branching stringers and a third consists of a single definite lead. Gold, in a coarse visible form, may be confined to quartz in some ore bodies but in others it is finely divided and is found not only in quartz but also associated with pyrite in the adjacent wall rock. In many veins the distribution of gold is such that there are several ore sections, separated by areas of low-grade material, in the same vein although its physical appearance remains unchanged. The veins form a very complex pattern in an ore zone which in places attains a length of 6000 ft. and a width of 4000 ft. They are most abundant in the Keewatin lavas in the neighborhood of the porphyry bodies. Few of the veins are persistent for long distances, though some

The need for standard test methods in the minerals beneficiation industry is growing with the increasing complexity of our processes and the more stringent requirements imposed on the quality and uniformity of our products. Although solutions of our problems have never been easy, they will become increasingly difficult to achieve unless we can develop a reliable and reproducible set of test methods. Historically speaking, our need was greatest for methods of chemical analysis. As these methods developed, they improved our ability to determine the grade of ore and measure the effect of our beneficiation attempts. The entire concept of grade and recovery is only as old as chemical analysis. Then came physical measurements. Each new concept in minerals beneficiation was related to certain properties and required corresponding test methods: specific density for jigging, magnetic susceptibility for magnetic separation, and tumbler strength for pellets. And associated with each process was the need for size determination. Size measurement is probably the first physical test ever conceived, and yet we are still improving on it. Dry sieving was quite acceptable for direct-shipping ores, but we had to go to wet sieving to control pelletizing and flotation. Subsieve analyzers have extended our routine measurements to the subsieve sizes, hut not below a few microns. As we all know, the solution of slimes- beneficiation and pollution-abatement problems is hampered by the lack of reliable and reproducible test methods in the fine-particle size range.

(communication to the Secretary): I have read with much pleasure the interesting and valuable paper by Mr. Kunz, and hope that the following brief notes, gathered a few years ago, while a resident in Mexico City, may help to elucidate the subjcct: Turquoise.—This was known to the Aztecs as Xihuitl. Santiago Ramirez states that they found it in the Cerro Xicohtzonc, close to Atzcapatzalco, a suburb of the City of Mexico (compare page 59). Opal.—This was known to the ancient Mexicans, for they named it mezcuitlatt (compare page 63). Jade.—Under this was iucluded a third mineral, prehnite, not mentioned by Mr. Kunz. According to James D. Dana, part of the "jade " of China is prehnite; and Humboldt informs us, in his work on New Spain, that the same species of jade is known in some parts of Mexico as mahagua (majagua ?). The same writer says, in his Views of the Cordilleras, that the Aztec name Tecpatl included flint, hornstone, and green jade; and finally, in his Travels in South America," he discusses the nature of the ancient amazon-stones, and declares them to have been made out of a jade resembling " compact feldspar," one of the constituents of the gabbro verde di Corsica. IIence those stones were probably composed of nephrite. According to Humboldt, the form given to them most frequently is that of the Babylomian cylinder, longitudinally perforated, and loaded with inscriptions and figures. They were also cut by the natives into very thin plates, perforated at the center, suspended by a thread, and worn as amulets. According to the historian Clavijero, the specific name given by the Aztecs to the nephritic stone (jadeite) was Quitzalitztli,

EyRing'S general theory of shear rates as a function of the properties of molecular units of flow is outlined and applied to the creep of metals. This theory regards the unit molecular processes involved in the flow of matter as typical chemical reactions requiring an energy of activation in order to proceed. The externally applied stresses are assumed to influence the rate of flow solely by lowering the activation energy for flow in one direction and raising that for flow in the other, owing to the work that is done by or against the external forces in going from the normal to the activated state. The rates of flow in the two directions are then no longer equal arid there is a net, macroscopically observable flow in one direction. This is understood to be the physical basis for the well-known exponential dependence of the creep rate on the stress. The amount by which the activation energy is raised and lowered by a given external stress is directly related to the molecular dimensions of the unit of flow, so that some insight into these call be found from the behavior of the strain rate with changing stress. When Eyring's equation is applied to the flow of ordinary liquids, such as water or benzene, it has been found from the values of the constants required to fit the observed data that the unit molecular process here involves the passage of single molecules by one another. In metallic creep, on the other hand, the unit molecular process is shown probably to involve the shear of rather large blocks of material (100 to 1000 or more atoms on a side). This agrees with present ideas of crystal flow by means of dislocations such as have been presented by Taylor, Oroaan, and Polanyi, as opposed to flow by a mechanism related to that taking place in atomic diffusion. The dimensions of the dislocations are found to depend markedly on the temperature. The questions of why some metals are so much softer than others, the effects of impurities on hardness, the softness of single crystals, and the role of self-diffusion in creep are considered in the light of the theory and it is shown how answers to these questions (and others similar) might be obtained by use of the theory.
