The coals in northern Wyoming and Montana are free-burning and non-caking and range from lignite to bituminous C in rank. Strip and underground mining are employed to supply railroad, utility, industrial, and domestic fuel. The market area includes Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, North and South Dakotas, Wyoming, Montana, the Pacific Northwest, and western Canada. THE larger producing coal mines in northern Wyoming are located in the Powder River Basin lying between the Black Hills region of South Dakota, eastern Wyoming, and the Big Horn Mountains in north central Wyoming, see Fig. 1. The mines are located particularly in the area along the route of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad from Gillette, Wyo., to a point approximately 15 miles northeast of Sheridan, Wyo. Fig. 2 is a graph of coal production in the state of Wyoming from 1918 to 1951. Across the Big Horn Mountains lies the Big Horn Basin, situated between the Big Horn Mountains and the Rocky Mountains proper. Mining in the Big Horn Basin is almost entirely confined to a small area known as the Gebo Field, near the town of Kirby, which is located on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. This paper will describe present operating areas, making only brief reference to the history of mining and marketing primarily because of the large area to be discussed. The coal beds presently mined in the Powder River Basin are all of Tertiary age and are of Fort Union and Wasatch formations of Paleocene and Eocene ages, see Fig. 3. The Fort Union formation, consisting of 2000 to 3200 ft of alternate sandstone, shale, and coal, is divided from oldest to youngest into the Tullock, Lebo Shale, and Tongue River members. Most of the mineable coal is in the Tongue River member, which is 500 to 800 ft thick. The Carney coal bed, varying from 7 to 20 ft in thickness, is considered the base of the Tongue River member. About 85 ft above the Carney is the Monarch bed, ranging from 18 to 42 ft in thickness. At approximately 210 ft above the Monarch is what is locally known in the Sheridan district as Dietz No. 3 bed, which varies from 12 to 30 ft in thickness. One hundred feet above the Dietz No. 3 is Dietz No. 2 bed, which is 7 to 12 ft thick. At about 100 ft above the Dietz No. 2 is Dietz No. 1 bed, 7 to 15 feet in thickness. Two hundred and fifteen feet above Dietz No. 1 is the Smith bed, approximately 5 ft thick. One hundred twenty-five feet above the Smith is the Roland bed, which is estimated to be approximately 13 ft thick. The Roland bed is considered the base of the Wasatch formation, which in the Powder River Basin is 1000 to 3500 ft thick and is composed largely of shale, sandstone, and coal. The foregoing measures are the only ones above the Tongue River member that have been mined in the Sheridan field. To the east of the Sheridan field, particularly in the area of Gillette, the Roland bed is considerably thicker and is considered the thickest and most extensive coal bed in Wyoming, reaching a maximum thickness of 106 ft. From 125 to 225 ft above the Roland lies the Arvada bed, average thickness 9 ft. Three hundred seventy-five to four hundred feet above the Arvada is the Felix bed, which reaches its maximum thickness of 30 ft near Echeta on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. East of the Powder River the bed averages more than 10 ft in thickness, but it thins in a northwesterly direction. The highest mineable coal in the Powder River field is the Healy bed, about 400 ft above the Felix bed and exposed only in the highest parts of the area where much of it has been burned along the outcrop. Where it has not been burned, the thickness at most of the outcrops is 10 to 15 ft.

Vapor transport experiments have been carried out in order to determine the saturation solubility of carbon in cobalt and nickel with respect to graphite over a large temperature range. Some of the uncertainty existing in the thermodynamics of these systems has been removed and accurate estimates of the heat and entropy of solution of carbon in nickel and cobalt have been deduced. The relatitle partial entropies of carbon are considered to be predominantly vibrational in origin. ALTHOUGH the thermodynamic properties of solid solutions of carbon in cobalt and in nickel have been investigated previously, the results of these investigations show a marked lack of agreement amongst themselves. In this investigation simple vapor transport experiments have been undertaken in order to measure the temperature variation of the saturation solubility of carbon in nickel and cobalt with the object of removing to some degree the uncertainties in the thermodynamics of these systems. In the case of the C-Co system, early measurements of the saturation solubility of graphite in Co show results at the same temperature differing by almost an order of magnitude.1-5 Recently Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert6 measured the equilibrium between CH4-H2 mixtures and C-Co solid solutions at five temperatures ranging from 850° to 1050°C. Their values of the activity of carbon in the solid solution, deduced from a knowledge of the chemical potential of carbon atoms in the gas, varies linearly with composition at each temperature and the authors concluded that the solutions were Henryan. The saturation solubilities deduced from Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert's measurements are in good agreement with the solubility determined at 1000°C by Rao and Nicholson7 and the value at 1000°C deduced from the measurements of smith8 on the equilibrium between CO/CO2 mixtures and C-Co solutions. The object of this investigation was to check the results of Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert and also to extend the range of solubility data to higher temperatures. In the case of the C-Ni system, there is fairly good agreement between the values given by schaefer9 for the saturation solubility of carbon C, in nickel, the value given at 1000°C by Rao and Nicholson,7 and that deduced from Smith's8 measurements of the equilibrium between C-Ni solutions and CO/CO2 mixtures at 1000°C. The values of C, deduced from Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert's6 measurements of the carbon activity in nickel are also in fairly good agreement. However, there is a large discrepancy between the above set of measurements and those of Lander, Kern, and Beach," who measured the carbon solubility of nickel in equilibrium with graphite by depositing an excess of graphite on the surface of Ni-foils from a gaseous mixture and subsequently diffusing in the carbon. These results are considerably higher than those mentioned above. The determinations6 of carbon activity a, in nickel from the CH4-H2 equilibrium showed that at all the temperatures investigated, the ac-values varied linearly with concentration up to about a, = 0.6 and then began to increase with concentration much more rapidly. On the basis of auxiliary experiments in which C-Ni solutions were equilibrated with graphite, Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert concluded that their CH4-H2 solid equilibrations at high values of a, were spurious and a, behaved linearly with composition up to the saturation limit (a, = 1). The short linear extrapolations of Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert's a, data yield values of C, in good agreement with those of Lander, Kern, and Beach." The solubility data for nickel discussed here is presented in Fig. 1 in the form of plots of ln[Cc/(l - 2cc)] vs 1/T. The discrepancies mentioned are clearly seen. A SPRING meeting is to be held at Cleveland this month under the joint auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee and the Ohio Section with the cooperation of the neighboring sections in Pennsyl-vania, Illinois, and the other States of the Great Lakes region. The discussions will be focused on just one subject, that of manganese, but will cover that thor- oughly as is indicated by the following list of papers. Nearly 14 pounds of manganese is needed for every ton of steel made. Estimates indicate that the total reserves of ore in this country suitable for making ferro would hardly supply domestic requirements for ten years, even if it could all be mined in that time. The grade of ore called for by present practice must come from abroad. The present tariff policy of this country is stated to cost industry $8,000,000 in order to force production of manganese ore to the extent of $600,000. What is the wise thing to do? Should a stock be accumulated? If so, how? Is it feasible to change practice and use low-grade ore or to beneficiate the ores of this grade and meet our requirements? What progress is being made in this direction? ,These and similar questions are raised in the various papers that have been submitted and will be open for dis-cussion.

Except in the old Catalan forge, or its modifications, attempts to make iron and steel directly from ore in a practical and economical manner have failed so frequently and completely that such schemes are looked upon with justifiable distrust. Without exception, all have failed from one cause or another, although in some instances every indication of a practical success was manifest in the beginning. It is, therefore, necessary to carefully examine and consider every detail affecting the process, or more properly, furnace, under consideration. This I have done to the best of my ability during a long visit to Russia last summer, and after satisfactorily observing the practical success of the furnace in the iron works of Count Stroganoff at Dobriansky in the Government of Perm, I decided to investigate as completely as possible the history of similar furnaces in Finland and Russia. These data, sifted and verified with the greatest possible care, form the substance of the present paper.* An illustration on page 321 of Percy's Iron and Steel shows the old type of Osmundssmide or harkugnar, which has been in use in Northern Europe since pagan times. Fig. 1 shows a furnace of this kind. It should, perhaps, more properly be called a high-bloomary furnace or forge, the Swedish word hark meaning bloom or loupe. It was with this type of furnace that Mr. Husgafvel began his experiments at Porsaskoski in 1875. Attempts to obtain better results with larger furnaces of this type were failures, as every bloom or loupe obtained necessitated blowing out the furnace with a consequent large waste of fuel. A larger furnace of course increased this waste with no corresponding advantage. A movable hearth of threeeighth inch iron, lined with a mixture of clay, quartz and lime, was next tried, but in consequence of the frequent repairs of this lining,

A flexible, efficient, and relatively low-cost drilling and blasting operation has evolved at Texasgulf Canada, Ltd.'s Kidd Creek underground mine. Located 32 km (20 miles) north of historic Timmins, Ontario, the underground operation utilizes a sublevel open stoping method developed with large-diameter blastholes. Over the years, Kidd Creek engineers have experimented with various drill-and-blast techniques, leading to the present-day practice. Continuing work is being conducted to further mechanize the blasting operation.

THE system of pitwork used with the Cornish pumping engine, and which, for want of a better name, we may call the Cornish system of pitwork, consists essentially of a series of plunger-pumps, situated one below the other, in a shaft or incline, the plungers being operated by a rod called the pitman or pump-rod, which must, therefore, extend from the motor at the surface to the lowest pump. The subject will be best understood by reference to Fig. 1, in which k may be taken as typical of the ordinary plunger-pump, in which S is the suction pipe, u, the lower valve situated in the H piece T; v, the upper valve situated in the valve-box O; I, the mounting-pipe or column through which the water is carried to the surface; L, the plunger-barrel, and P, the plunger working through the stuffing-box, and actuated by the branch rod r, which is attached to the main pump-rod, R. The action of the pump is as follows : On the ascent of the plunger, acting now by suction, the water flows from the reservoir through the valve u, into the barrel, L. On the descent of the plunger, the water is forced up through the valve, v, which acts merely as a check valve, into the pipe, I, through which it is, at each successive down-stroke of the plunger, forced upward until it reaches the next reservoir, from which it is taken by another similar pump, and so on until it reaches the surface or drain-tunnel. The pump is obviously only single-acting, i. e., it acts only during one-half of its entire stroke. The weight of water raised during the up-stroke of the plunger is equal to the weight of a column of water whose base is the area of the plunger and whose height is the mean distance between the plunger-face and the surface of water in the lower reservoir, a distance not usually exceeding 12 or 15 feet, and which obviously cannot under the most favorable circumstances, exceed 25 or 30 feet. The water forced up during the down-stroke is equal to the weight of a column of water whose base equals the area of the plunger and whose height equals the length of the mounting column above the mean position of the plunger-face, say from 150 to 300 feet. Remarks of Mr. Robert W. Hunt, General, Superintendent, Albany and Rensselaer Iron and Steel Company., Troy N. Y.—In discussing Dr. Dudley's two most interesting papers, I feel a natural hesitancy in disagreeing with conclusions formed after such careful and conscientious work. But I think he has made his deductions from too meagre premises. The analyses of but twenty-five samples are entirely too few to justify the establishment of so important a formula. When we consider that he indirectly proposes to regulate an interest amounting, even at the present low prices, to over $20,000,000 per annum, we may well hesitate before accepting a formula based upon the chemical and physical analyses of but twenty-five steel rails. Dr. Dudley touches the keynote in referring to the proposed labors of the Government Test Commission. They based their hopes of attaining success upon the chemical and physical analyses of a very large number of samples, and in the only branch of investigation which the short-sighted policy of Congress has allowed them to complete, i.e., chain cables, we find that a dozen, twenty-five or one hundred tests gave no satisfactory results. It was only after many hundreds that they were enabled to' draw conclusions. There are so many circumstances hearing upon the life of a rail, that the task of extracting a correct result seems herculean. I presume I am right in stating that in our Northern latitudes early winter and spring months witness the breaking of the greatest number of rails, thus seeming to prove that an unstable road-bed has much to answer for. Then, again, broken and flattened wheels must be taken into account, but I am convinced that more rails have been broken by the treatment which they received before leaving the rolling-mill

TUESDAY, Feb. 16, was no day for strolling along the cold sidewalks of New York, and a large number of metallurgists sat down with pleasure to the warming task of wiping a few soldered joints. Presented by a joint-wiper of the modern school, G. M. Bouton, of the well-known team of Schumacher, Bouton, and Phipps, the initial paper brought into focus the theme of conservation of strategic metals and described the technique of making the fillet-type joint now employed by the Bell System. Using an over-all average of only 40 per cent of the solder formerly used by the conventional method. this important development bids fair to stick when the war is over. D. L. Martin and E. R. Parker then described the embrittling effect of hydrogen on silver previously heated in oxygen and the less serious but troublesome result obtained under the converse conditions. An interesting example of grain growth restriction created additional material for the lively discussion that ensued among those who have encountered one or another of these phenomena in silver and copper.

COMMENTING on the report of the latest Royal Commission for India, the September, 1926, issue of the National City Bank's monthly letter states, among other things, that "The decision of the Royal Commission is against the proposal for a gold coinage, but in favor of placing the silver coins and paper currency now redeemable in silver on a gold basis." Also, it quotes the following from the Royal Commission's report: The essence of the proposal * * * * * is that the ordinary medium of circulation in India should remain as at present the currency note and the silver rupee, and that the stability of the currency in terms of gold should be secured by making the currency directly convertible into gold for all purposes, but the gold should not circulate as money. It must not circulate at first, and it need not circulate ever. In this connection it may be stated that during the last one hundred and fifty years or so unsuccessful attempts have been made by the governments of different nations of the world to devise a plan or plans by which gold and silver could be used concurrently for money purposes and, particularly, as standard money; such, for example, as bimetallism, which, of course, is impracticable. But, since none of such plans has been adopted generally it is logical to conclude that their proponents did not shape them so as to conform to the basic principle of standard money, or else political issues were deemed to be dominant, or, perhaps, it was partly due to each.

Metallic titanium has been prepared in small quantities since the beginning of the century. Hunter1 reported in 1910 that he obtained a malleable product of 99.9 pct purity by the reduction of the tetrachloride by sodium in a closed container. Later Van Arke12 and Fast prepared small quantities of malleable titanium by thermal decomposition of titanium iodide. Another method for producing malleable titanium from tetrachloride was reported by Kr0ll4 who used magnesium as the reducing agent. More recently Dean, Long, Wartman, and Anderson5 working at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have reported the preparation of the metal on a pilot plant scale by the reduction of titanium tetrachloride by magnesium in an atmosphere of helium. Their product, which is malleable, was used in the present investigation. Early in 1948 after the work of this paper was completed Campbell, Jaffee, Blocher, Gurland, and Gonser6 described the strength and working characteristics of pure titanium which was prepared by the iodide method on a scale producing 300 to 600 g per run, in the form of 0.3- to 0.4-in. diam rods. Their product is characterized by low hardness and large capacity for cold work which they attribute to a high degree of purity with respect to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon. Titanium has a melting point of about 1725 C," it may be classed as a light metal since the specific gravity is 4.5 g per cc-I. The crystal structure is close-packed hexagonal from room temperature to 885°C. Above this temperature the structure is reported7 as body-centered cubic. The change in crystal structure has been associated with discontinuities in specific heat,8 electric resistanceg and theimoelec-tric force10 at temperatures near 890°C. It is reportedll that annealed titanium has a tensile strength of 78,700 psi which can be increased by cold-work to 123,000 psi. In the present investigation, the lattice constants at room temperature, the thermal expansivity between 30 and 800°C, as well as the electrical resistivity and thermoelectric force against platinum between — zoo and I000 C have been determined. Materials For the measurements, two series of specimens were prepared from titanium furnished by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The first was made from an annealed sintered compact, 0.38 in. thick. Sections of the compact were cold-swaged with intermediate anneals in vacuum to the sizes used. Sizes over 0.25-in. diam were annealed at I000°C and smaller sizes at 800°C. Specimens originating from the sintered compact are designated in this paper as A. The second series of specimens was made from a rod of titanium, 0.19 in. in diam, which was cold-swaged with the necessary intermediate anneals to the required sizes. This series of specimens is designated B. The impurities in the specimens of titanium, determined by chemical analysis, are given in Table 1. Oxygen and nitrogen which Were not determined by analysis, are probably present although in small quantities in view of the ductility of the material.

The power plant of the Burro Mountain Copper Co. is located near Tyrone, N. M., at 5,950 ft, elevation. It is interesting because it uses the largest stationary Diesel engines in the United States. The general layout of the plant is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The building is of steel-frame construction with hollow-tile walls and corrugated-iron roof; the floor is concrete and all windows have steel frames, making a fireproof building. The building is made to accommodate one more electric generator unit, which is being installed; also two 4,000-cu. ft. air compressors direct-connected to three-cylinder engines with the same size cylinders as the electric units. The power plant consists of two 815-kva., 60-cycle, three-phase, 6,600-volt, 180-r.p.m. generators, direct-connected to five-cylinder, two-cycle Diesel engines; the necessary circulating pumps for cooling water, cooling towers and oil storage tanks. A portion of the power is used in the same building as the generating units to run one of two 200-kw. rotary converters delivering 260-volt direct current, and a 2,500-cu. ft. air compressor, delivering air at 95 1b.-pressure, direct-connected to a 400-hp., 6,600-volt, three-phase synchronous motor. The remainder of the power is used to run a 1,500-ton concentrating mill 3 1/2 miles from the power house, various hoists, pumps and motors about the mines and the lighting and water-works of the town of Tyrone. The direct current is used for electric traction in the mine, also to run hoists and motors that were installed before the new power plant was built. Due to the large hoists that take starting peaks of 250 kw. and the 10-ton electric locomotive that takes at times 150 kw., the load is extremely variable, as shown in Fig. 3. The two five-cylinder vertical Diesel engines, which are rated at 1,250 b.hp. at sea level, have cylinders of 525-mm. diameter (20.6 in.) and

New data on the distribution of silicon between slag and carbon-saturated iron at 1600Oand 1700OC are presented which, in combination with previously published data, permit the determination of silica activities over a broad range of compositions in the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 system. The distribution of silicon between graphite-saturated Fe-Si-C alloys and blast furnace-type slags in equilibrium with CO has been described in previous publications.1"3 In this past work the silica-silicon relation was established at temperatures of 1425" to 1'700°C for slags containing up to 20 pct A12O3. This paper presents the results of additional studies at 1600" and 1700° C which extend the silicon distribution data at these temperatures for CaO-A12O3-SiO, slags over a range from zero pct Al2O3 to saturation with Al2O3, or CaO.2Al2O3. The upper limit of SiO2 is set by the occurrence of Sic as a stable phase when the metal contains 23.0 or 23.7 pct Si at 1600" or 1700°C, respectively. The activity of silica over the expanded range is determined directly from the distribution data.3 Recently4-7 other investigators have studied the activities of SiO, and CaO, principally in the binary system, using different methods and obtaining somewhat different results. EXPERIMENTAL STUDY The experimental apparatus and procedure have been fully described in previous publications.1, 3 Six new series of experimental heats have been made, four at 1600° and two at 1700°C. Master slags of several fixed CaO/Al203 ratios were pre-melted in graphite crucibles, and these were used with additions of silica to prepare the initial slag for each experiment. Slag and metal were stirred at 100 rpm and CO was passed through the furnace at 150 cc per min. The initial sample was taken 1 hr after addition of slag at 1600°C or 1/2 hr after addition at 1700°C. The run was normally continued for 8 hr at 1600°C or 7 hr at 1700°C, and the final sample was taken at the end of this period. Changes in Si and SiO2 content indicate the direction of approach to equilibrium, and in a series of runs where the approach is from both sides this permits approximate location of the equilibrium line. Fig. 1 shows the results of such a series of 15 runs at 1600°C for slags of CaO/Al,O3 = 1.50 by weight. Figs. 2 and 3 record other series at 1600°C and Fig. 5 a series at 1700°C with fixed CaO/Al0 ratios. The results of the experiments at 162003°C have been reported in part in a preliminary note.3 In the experiments recorded in Figs. 4 and 6, the slags were saturated with A12O3 (or with CaO.2A12O3 within its field of stability) by suspending a pure alumina tube in the melt during the course of the run. The final slag analyses were used to establish the liquidus boundaries8 in the stability fields of CaO.2Al2O3 and of Al20,. ACTIVITY OF SILICA The free-energy change in the reaction has been calculated by Fulton and chipman2 from recent and trustworthy data including heats of formation, entropies, and heat capacities. The more recent determination by Olette of the high-temperature enthalpy of liquid silicon is in satisfactory agreement with the values used and therefore requires no revision of the result which is expressed in the equation: SiO2 (crist) + 2C (graph) = Si + 2CO(g.) Since the melts were made under 1 atm of CO and were graphite-saturated, the equilibrium constant for Eq. [I] reduces to K1 = asi /asio2. The value of this constant is 1.77 at 1600°C and 16.2 at 1700°C. Through K1, the activity of silica in the slag is directly related to the activity of silicon in the equilibrium metal.

Five or six alloys each in the systems Ni-C.v, Ni-Mo, and NL-W, spaced to cover the single phase areas as well as a part of the adjacent two-phase field, were prepared as uacuum-melted alloys. Tensile tests at room temperature and stress rupture tests at 1200° and 1500°F we.ve run for time periods to give fracture in 0.1 to 500 hr. Observations mere made of solid-solution and second-phase strengthening or uleakening, coupled with studies of ductility and the role of structure on the noted behavior patterns. THE development of stable creep-resistant alloys while broad and systematic is also highly empirical. A number of simple rules have been suggestedL-" but these are based on scant data. Whereas rules for low-temperature alloy strengthening can be applied with some success in more simple systems, the extension to behavior at high temperatures (greater than about 0.4 of the absolute melting temperature) is very poorly understood and has encountered important exceptions and deviations in terms of atom size or valency effects. In particular, the occurrence of both solid-solution weakening4,5 and second-phase weakening2 at high temperatures is of interest. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE Nickel was chosen as the base material because of its important role in current high-temperature alloy applications, because of its freedom from a phase transformation, and because of wide solubilities for many elements of interest. The selected alloys were single- and two-phase structures in the Ni-Cr,6 Ni-Mo,7 and Ni-w 8 systems. The alloys were vacuum melted and cast, utilizing high-purity raw materials, in the form of 15 lb ingots. They were readily forged into 1/2-in. bar stock (except the two highest chromium alloys). The alloy compositions are shown in Table I. Typical impurity values are: Carbon: Max 0.03 pct (except for 30 and 35 pct Cr alloys which had 0.07) Nitrogen: Max 0.005 pct (except for two of the Cr alloys which had 0.05) Sulfur: Max 0.004 pct Silicon: Max 0.05 pct Each alloy was solution treated (air quenched) to produce comparable grain size. The two-phase alloys were then overaged in an effort to produce a stable structure for testing at 1200° and 1500°F, The results are summarized in Table 11. Following the heat treatments outlined in Table 11, the bars were machined to a gage section of 1.25-in. long by 0.250-in. diam. In addition to room-temperature tensile tests, stress-rupture tests were run at 1200" and 1500°F for time periods from 0.1 to about 500 hr. RESULTS Room-Temperature Mechanical Properties—The ultimate tensile strength, total elongation, and reduction of area values for all the alloys are plotted vs atomic percent of the solute element in Fig. 1. It can be seen that for the same amount of solute element the ultimate tensile strength increases in the order chromium, molybdenum, tungsten. Elongation increases (reduction of area decreases) with increasing amounts of solute for all the solid solution alloys, the values ranging from 50 to 70 pct. It may be borrowed either in 16-mm. size on an 800-ft. reel, or 35-mm. size on a 2000¬ft. reel, the only charge being the cost of returning the film. Douglas D. AS a possible method of improving the elevated temperature strength properties of zirconium, an investigation was initiated on the feasibility of producing a dispersion-strengthened material. Because of the high reactivity of zirconium, its high solubility for oxygen, and the stability of the Zr-0 solid solution, the major problem in such a development is choice of a suitable dispersant. Thus, in the present investigation we were concerned primarily with the stability of various dispersants in the zirconium matrix. The experimental procedure consisted of blending powders of zirconium and a dispersant, followed by cold compaction and extrusion. The best available source of -325 mesh zirconium powder contained between 1500 and 3500 ppm Oz; to this material, powders of zirconium carbide (5 p max), vanadium carbide (5 p max), alumina (0.03 p average), lan-thana (0.8 to 2 p), ceria (0.8 to 2 p), yttria (0.8 to 2 p), calcia (44 p rnax), or thoria (0.6 to 0.8 p) were added in amounts of 7 vol pct and compacted at 65 tsi. A cylindrical compact having a density between 70 and 80 pct of theoretical and dimensions of 1 in. diam by 1-114 in. high was thus produced. After canning in copper, these billets could be extruded (5: 1) on a 54-ton capacity, slow-traverse hydraulic press with the billet temperature at 1550°F and the extrusion die at 900°F. However, lack of densifica-tion of some of the extruded billets necessitated ratios of at least 23 :1. Ultimately, all billets were successfully extruded at 1500°F to 0.190 in. diam (32 :I), fully dense rods using a 200-ton capacity press and a ram speed of 90 ipm. The microstructures of as-extruded Zr-7 vol pct LazOS and Zr-7 vol pct Y2Os are shown in Fig. l(a) and (c), respectively. These structures are similar to all the as-extruded materials and consist of an elongated, single-phase zirconium matrix dispersed with oxide or carbide particles. Very little porosity is observed, and the interface between matrix and particles appears satisfactory. The size and distribution of particles, however, are not ideally of the type desired for dispersion strengthening. Since the primary study was of particle stability with respect to zirconium, no attempt was made to overcome agglomeration during powder blending and fabrication. THE WORK OF THE DRILLER and of the oil geologist is seriously handicapped by the impossibility of actually seeing what is going on inside a borehole as it is being drilled. Visual information of the position and condition of the casing, and of the characters and attitudes of strata passed through would be of inestimable benefit. The best substitute for putting a periscope down a hole is the taking of photographs of its interior at points where information is desired. An apparatus for this purpose has been constructed by Dr. Thomas Reinhold, of Heemstede, Holland, and one instrument of his design has been put into practical use by the Geological Survey of The Netherlands in searching for water. To the best of our knowledge, this instrument has not been applied to oilfield problems, although the possibility has been mentioned in the one or two brief notices of the camera which have appeared in the literature.' The purpose of presenting this description of the instrument, with some examples of its work, is to suggest that it might be adapted to serve a variety of useful purposes in American oilfields, and with the hope that discussion will bring out any modifications necessary to make the apparatus more valuable to drillers and geologists.
