Notice is hereby given that all members whose dues are paid for the year 1917 will be supplied with a copy of the Volumes MV and LV. Volume LVI has been delayed by the fact that our printer, like almost every other industrial society, has taken up war work and is under great pressure in addition thereto. Volume LVI will be sent before the end of the year, to members whose dues for the year 1917 are paid.

The Howe Memorial Lecture, in memory of Henry Marion Howe, Past President of the Institute, was authorized in April, 1923, as an annual address to be delivered by invitation under the auspices of the Institute by an individual of recognized and outstanding attainment in the science and practice of iron and steel metallurgy or metallography, chosen by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of the Iron and Steel Division. NATURE was in a smiling mood on December 18, 1883. On that day, Chester Alan Fulton, the sixty-first President of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, was born, and she endowed him with every good quality within her reach - looks, physique, intelligence, and character. Brought up in the valley of the Hudson River, with the mighty Palisades which make it the "Rhine of America," he has lived up to his early promise - as a man, as an engineer and as a friend.

TEXAS not only produces millions of barrels of petroleum daily, but supplies the oil industry with an asset infinitely more valuable than liquld gold. That asset is leadership. The oil industry was built from its humble beginning a few decades ago into a potent force in world economy by human hands and human brains. One of these great leaders in the busy world of oil is Wallace Pratt, of the Humble company, who has been called to a position as director and member of the executive committee of the Standard Oil of New Jersey. TRAINED as a mining engineer and with no little experience in the field of mining, his interests and activities later transferred to the alloying, fabrication, and physical metallurgy of nonferrous metals, principally silver, Robert H. Leach represents in his professional life both of the major phases of the fraternity of mining and metallurgical engineers. In his personal characteristics, his wide circle of true friendships, his kindly, sympathetic interest in the problems of his fellow engineers, be they the junior men of the mineral industries or the mature and experienced men, he typifies the characteristics and attitude so desirable in the professional man.
