BORN in Florida, educated in Ten¬nessee, employed all his life in the iron industry of Alabama, J. T. MacKenzie is truly of the South. In courtesy, hospitality, as well as in accent of speech, he is true to the tradition of the South. His alma neater, the University of the South, has given him the honorary degree of Doctor of Science for his achievements in metallurgy. He has been active in many technical societies; has received the Whiting Medal of the American Foundrymen's Association for his work in the advancement of gray iron metallurgy, and is chairman of the gray iron division of the A.F.A.; was instrumental in initiating the Alloys of Iron Research of the Engineering Foundation and has served as a member of its Alloys of Iron Committee since the Committee's organization.

WILLIAM ("BILL") EMBRY WRATHER, recently elected to a second term as Director of the Institute, is widely known as petroleum geologist, gentleman, and scholar. Born in Brandenburg, Ky., he was early endowed with a Southern accent which has remained with him strongly flavored by his later life in the oil-fields of Texas and the Mid-Continent region, and only thinly concealed by a Middle Western burr acquired during his student days at the University of Chicago. After graduating there with the Ph. B. in 1908, young Wrather (the adjective still fits!) joined the Gulf Production Co. Soon afterwards he married a charming Chicago girl, Alice Dolling, who, with their two daughters, has been his companion on many of his more distant trios.

Today, the employment of the modern hammer drill, using hollow steel, with air or water to expel the cuttings from the drill hole, is the rule rather than the exception in practically all rock-drilling operations. There is considerable carelessness in the matter of keeping the hole in the drill steel properly opened. Plugged steels wholly or partially, prevent proper operation of the drill, whereby drilling speed is retarded, water tubes are bent or broken, and time is lost in tink-ering, or, as often happens, the drilling gang is idle while someone makes a trip to the shop after another drill steel or water tube. To relieve this condition, the Ingersoll-Rand Company has developed, as an auxiliary to the Leyner sharpener, a new device-the Leyner shank and bit punch.

THE engineers of Illinois have been submitting to the State Geological Survey an increasing number of requests for advice on their geological problems, including landslides, unequal settling of fills, laying pavements across peat bogs, shattering and heaving of pavement by frost action, etc. The authors discussed the behavior of landslides, their effects, their causes, a tentative classification, and remedial measures. In the latter connection the efficacy of drainage and how it should be handled in order to be most effective was considered. The principles and efficacy of other remedial measures, such as subsurface blasting, rock anchoring, installation of wood, concrete or steel piling, construction of retaining walls, construction of cribbing and reduction of slope were also discussed. Attention was also given to the matter of applying geological knowledge to avoid undesirable highway locations, and a specific example was cited.

The story is aimed to better acquaint you with Worthington and how they came to produce a diversified industrial equipment. (18) SPEED REDUCERS: Now available is Cleveland Worm & Gear Co.'s new general catalog. In its 180 pages are the illustrations and description of the complete Cleveland line, together with full engineering data, dimensions, weights and horsepower capacities of the various drives. (19) METAL PRODUCTS: Armco Drainage and Metal Products, Inc. has just published a condensed 6-page catalog of its products designed for mining use. It describes and illustrates such products as Flex-Beam guardrails, corrugated metal pipe, liner plates, retaining walls, Steelox buildings, and welded pipe. (20) RECORDS: Pre-scheduled, controlled, preventive maintenance reduces costly downtime to a minimum and eliminates the need for large emergency crews. A new folder describes how such a program can be accomplished by using Remington Rand Inc., Kardex visible records. Another Remington Rand Inc. bulletin is the certified case history of how Kardex visible purchasing records help maintain a smooth running purchasing department.

(written discussion?).-On page 2680, under the heading Junction Box and Zone Box, the authors say, with reference to the zone-box principle of connections between primary couple, compensator couple, and copper leads, which method in its appli-cation to a single couple is shown in Fig. 34, that if this principle is adopted for a multiple installation, so as to save compensating leads; a selective switch may be (and the inference is that it must be) inserted between the zone box and the different couples, putting the switch at an inconvenient point, or putting up with some complicated interlacing of connections.. Wilson-Maeulen Co. has employed the zone-box method extensively for several years and in none of the many multiple installa-tions has either of those alternatives been resorted to. Instead there has been used a method of wiring with the switch at the indicator and involv-ing no more complications than the junction-box method shown III
