BECAUSE it is necessary that the powders made for casting have a magistery of salt water, I wish now to teach you to prepare the salt that must form this magistery, for without it these powders would not have the toughness to hold themselves together when they are dry. In short, you take the quantity [119v] of salt that you need to prepare and put it in a rough pot, either baked or, if it suits you better, raw but well dried. This is completely covered with a lid or is luted with well- made moulding clay. Then it is encircled with brick ends at a distance of three dita, like a drying furnace. This space is filled with good charcoal; fire is applied and it is left to stand until all the charcoal is consumed by itself* Then you take that quantity of this burned or rather melted salt which you wish to use for moistening the clay and which you think can be dissolved in the water so that it wd remain very salty. It is boiled in a pot with water and then left to stand. After it has settled, your powder is moistened with it and used for moulding. When you see by testing it that the powder stands up as you wish, it is good. If not, give it some more of this water again and continue until you see that it holds enough. For without this magistery it would return to the dryness that it had before as a powder, and you could not use it without fear that it would fall from the Games. In this way this earth, either natural or artificial, is prepared and made ready, and it is used as the need occurs.

Mineral resources of Japan are remarkably characterized by the diverse variety of ores. Seventeen kinds of metallic ores are produced in Japan from approximately 175 mines, but the country is becoming increasingly dependent on imported ores, and 23 ores such as bauxite, nickel and platinum are not produced domestically. Self-sufficiency of non-metallic minerals is higher than metallic ores. Twenty three non-metallic minerals such as fire clay, pyrophyllite dolomite, and limestone are produced from about 1264 mines. About 22 minerals such as graphite, asbestos, fluorite, and phosphorites are not produced in the country. One of the major concerns of Japan is raise the self-sufficiency of raw materials. The result of the analysis of the mineral potential of Japan in relation to possible future domestic supply and is reported.

A NEW LINE of specialists has arisen as a result of the trend toward labor socialization and collectivism in all branches of industry. These men are the ones who will govern the destiny of many companies and the labor policy of our government in coming years. They must be men of integrity and of rather exceptional qualifications; men who can foresee the trend of labor relations with business, and who are willing to sacrifice the immediate fruits of technical training for manual labor and study. They must take their place in industry, not with the idea of following the orthodox line of advancement, but knowing that they must stay at the bottom until they have learned to understand the viewpoints, the work, the advantages and the disadvantages of each classification of labor. They must not be of a radical nature or become easily biased, and they must study. You will say I am looking for a superman and in one sense that is true, but the business man and our government are both in the market even now for this type of man, and with the proper training and background, many of our young technicians can readily enter this field of work.

The techniques of testing the physical properties of green pellets produced in a batch balling test are described. It has been found that these physical properties, i.e. drop resistance, wet compressive strength, and plastic deformation under load, are generally related to the moisture content of the wet balls. A "criterion" method of analyzing data from a series of batch tests is discussed. This method facilitates the comparison of results of various test series. A time-sharing computer program, which correlates the test data from a batch series, generates the "criterion" values for subsequent comparison and analysis, and produces X, Y plots of the various moisture-strength relationships, is presented. Examples of computer output and use of the "criterion" evaluation method are given.

During the past year or two considerable time and money have been spent in developing equipment for tubing large-volume high-pressure oil and gas wells without loss of production. That the efforts have met with success is proved by the fact that any properly cased well, regardless of its production or regardless of its rock pressure or working pressure, can now be safely tubed with no appreciable loss of production, provided experienced crews handle the new equipment. It is conceded that a far better gas-oil ratio can be secured by flowing a well through tubing of a proper diameter—the diameter of the tubing depending, of course, upon the volume of fluid and gas and the depth of the well—than by the more usual method of installing a choke at the mouth of the well. Where possible it is becoming the practice to bring wells in through tubing, though in the majority of instances this is not feasible. In many instances it has developed, after a well has been brought in through tubing, that the tubing installed is either too large or too small for the most efficient operation or that the well had not been drilled deep enough. The equipment described in this paper, in the hands of experienced men, permits the tubing of these wells after they have been brought in, with the size of tubing then determined by actual observation to be best suited for each particular well, and with no danger of the well getting out of control, of catching fire, of drilling itself deeper, or of any loss of production. The deeper the flowing production with the consequent future higher lifting costs, the more essential it is that the size of tubing used be such as to give the best possible gas-oil ratio. The ability to bring in these deep wells through the casing and then, immediately after their completion, regardless of volume or pressure, to tube them with the size of tubing that permits the most efficient use of the gas present will doubtless save many dollars. Uses for the New Equipment The equipment permits a further step in the operation of wells where the conservation of gas is of major importance. Perhaps 3-in. tubing

FUSED quartz is a glass made by the fusion of nearly pure silica. Some confusion in terminology exists but in the trade today "fused quartz" generally refers to the perfectly transparent colorless product made from rock crystal whereas "fused silica" is a white, translucent product made from silica sand. Vitrified silica is the term preferred by purists for all quartz glass, but it lacks the definiteness of -the trade terms. Since the raw materials, methods of production, and properties of the finished products arc different for the two types, the trade terms are preferred. As fused quartz is amorphous, it-physical properties differ greatly from those of quartz crystal. Lacking crystallographic directions and having no piezo-electric properties, fused quartz. of course, has no value for the making of radio oscillator plates; but it does have other valuable and unique properties. Perhaps the 'best known and most useful properties are its extremely low coefficient of expansion and its ability to transmit short-wave ultraviolet radiant energy. AT present it is impossible to estimate closely the amount of oil obtainable from a given area of land. However, after the completion of a few properly distributed prospect wells, one can calculate the approximate yield of the sands penetrated, with a probable error of say 50 per cent. Even rough predictions of this kind are of value in, large operations. Without wells upon it, one can never be absolutely certain that an area will produce any oil whatever, and one can only indulge in wild guesses of the probable productive area, before the geological structure has been carefully contoured and the top of the basal water plotted on a map. This requires wells. At times it is desirable to form an idea of the possible yield of oil in advance of drilling, as in cases where the price asked for undeveloped land seems too high, but where the probability of finding oil is furnished by neighboring development, supported by the geology. In such cases the most one can do is to make an estimate of possible maximum yield, which may of course far exceed results, and which is of use mainly in the prevention of excessive initial investment. The method is very significant in a general way, as in regions like the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, where the productive sands in the Cretaceous shale are so few and so thin and fine that they cannot develop very great production, although the high quality of the oil probably will counterbalance this defect sufficiently to give local profit in favorable areas. Reservoir Capacity of Sands.-The porosity of a stratum is the measure of its maximum reservoir capacity for liquids and gases. The porosity may be determined experimentally and must be used in connection with the total volume of the sand.

"The Murray Plant of the American Smelting & Refining Company is situated seven miles south of Salt Lake City, and has a fine view of the Salt Lake Valley with its fertile farms and orchards.It is located on the Los Angeles & Salt Lake and Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroads, and has a fine electric car service, cars running every 15 minutes.The beautiful and majestic Wasatch Range lies about five miles to the east and the Oquirrh Range to the west, and from these mountains a large proportion of the ores treated are obtained.The location is very central, ores coming to the plant from all directions. Park City, where a large tonnage of high grade silver-lead ore is obtained, lies to the east and the camp of Alta is just across the mountains from Murray.To the west is the wonderful camp of Bingham, which produces a large tonnage of lead ores, in addition to its immense tonnages of copper ores, which are treated at Garfield.Tintic, to the south, sends in quantites of dry silicious ores, as well as silver-lead ores.Besides the above, ores are shipped to the plant from Stockton, Ophir, Milford and other camps in Utah, as well as from Nevada and Idaho, and also some ores from Cali¬fornia, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming and Colorado.The American Smelting & Refining Company took possession in 1899 of its Utah properties which consisted of the following plants, all of which have been dismantled:"
