IRON, iron everywhere, but hardly a particle of pure unadulterated iron for the metallurgist to use as a base for the protean characteristics that he develops in the alloys of iron-the modern steels. Iron, next to aluminum the most abundant metal in the crust of the earth; one of the oldest metals known to man and serving him as the most indispensable metal in both war and peace; yet man's knowledge of its properties is based on specimens that are not pure and hence probably differ considerably in their properties from the truly pure metal. Purification of iron has brought about startling changes in its electrical and magnetic properties and has modified its behavior in changing its crystal form with temperature, the basis of the heat-treatment of iron. So both the research metallurgist and the metallurgist of the steel plant are intrigued by the possibilities that might unfold were 100 per cent pure iron available in sufficient quantities to determine its properties.

WHILE the attention of all engineering branches is focused today on changes and improvements in the several curricula, we are concerned here with the many questions arising in industry and college concerning the preparation for the petroleum engineering profession. The succession of problems confronting the petroleum engineer demands a degree of versatility not ordinarily encountered in other professions. As a consequence, the student cannot acquire mastery of all the several engineering branches represented in field practice, and as an alternative, he has learned to appreciate the value of thorough training in the basic or fundamental sciences as a preliminary foundation for professional work. While our attention is directed primarily to the training of engineers in educational institutions, it is necessary that the ultimate education of the professional engineer be kept in mind. It is apparent that his success as an engineer is limited not only by his educational and job experience, but by his native endowments: mentality, personality and health. The engineer's lack of job experiences often proves as much a handicap as the lack of adequate college training. If the final product proves to be satisfactory, both industry and technical institutions are to be congratulated. However, if the product is found wanting, the one most responsible should be apprehended. FITNESS FOR PROFESSION For the most part, students of engineering colleges have had their interests in applied science awakened at a relatively early age. Many of them entered college as a convenient means of acquiring a technical education, but undoubtedly would have had better prospects in a shorter program offered by institutions of noncollege grade. The activating motive of practical interest is also strong in students suitable for college training, but in many cases an intellectual interest must be awakened in order that it may survive graduation. Numerous engineers believe that this progressive process of selection and determination of career aims is one of the essential services rendered by the engineering colleges. Industrialists, who are more interested in quality than quantity of petroleum engineering graduates, have pointed out the good that should result if more empha¬sis were given to the work of eliminating the misfits. They also point out the protective measures that have been taken by other professions for the betterment of professional standards. Mention has been made of the beneficial results to be obtained by collective determination of the market for the products of engineering schools, particularly in that the students unsuited to the profession would have an opportunity to prepare themselves for employment more suited to their personalities and other qualifications. A few months since, Prof. Lawrence C. Johnson, of the U. 8. Survey, discovered in Mississippi large deposits of carbonate iron-ore, geologically located in the Claiborne formation of the Tertiary Epoch. These deposits are not pockets, but continuous layers or beds extending for miles, and can be located with certainty where they have not been removed by erosion. Upon examination, recently made by G. W. West, Birmingham, Ala., the largest deposits and highest grades of ore were found near Enterprise, Lauderdale county, and in Clark county, Miss. While coal was undoubtedly seen by the Spanish explorers in Texas, no mention can be found of it in any of their available published records; it was likely noticed by the first Americans, and coal along the Rio Grande River was reported in 1834.1 The next record is that of brown coal in Bastrop County in 1837 by James Nicholson and Judge Pinckney Hill? Dr. Riddell saw brown coal along the Trinity River in 1839 and described it as follows: "In the banks of the Trinity, associated with the iron ore, and overlying the brown coal, whole trees and fragments of trees, piled sometimes one upon another, present themselves completely transformed into stone. In some logs a diversified metamorphosis is observable; one portion of the vegetable structure having been replaced with silex, another with brown oxide of iron, and a third is bitumenized or converted into coal. "In concern with Dr. F. B. Page, I took considerable pains in the exploration of the Trinity brown coal formation., As no excavations for working have yet been made, the best places for inspecting the formation are where the Trinity cuts its way through the highlands, or where its banks present themselves in bold high bluffs, as at New Cincinnati, and near the site of the projected town of Osceola. The coal lies in horizontal strata, dipping one foot in thirty to the northwest. The main stratum at the latter place, just above Bedias creek; is represented by the concurrent statement of W. C. Brookfield, surveyor, Mr. James S. Hunter, of Huntsville, Texas, Dr. Page, and some other persons whom I consulted, as between six and seven feet in thickness, the lower portion being between three and four feet above low water mark. Unfortunately, during my sojourn there, the river was unusually high and turbid for the season of year; I could not consequently verify the same by personal observation and measurements. The most considerable coal beds which I had opportunity fully to inspect, were in the Trinity bluffs, southwest side, at New Cincinnati, six miles lower down, and just below the mouth of Salt creek, near six miles above. The workable stratum of brown coal in each of these localities is about five feet thick, and situated some fifteen feet or so above low water mark. In quality it is said to be precisely similar to the coal in the seven feet bed."2 . Forecasters, in estimating long-term energy requirements and supplies, have predicted a bright outlook for coal. Some predictions have annual coal output reaching 800 million tons by 1980, almost twice the average of the last five years. These projections assume that ultimate consumer energy products will be supplied adequately not only in volume but also by kind and type. The consumer energy schedule shifts continually as it reflects the changing demands for numerous uses. Its appearance, expressed generally in proportions of solids, liquids, gases and electricity, is quite different today from what it was in 1940. It may change even more by 1980. Thus, the shares that coal and the other energy sources will have In total supply will depend upon how well each source can be processed into products that will be accepted by consumers.

All mining and milling enterprises must be based on adequate ore reserves. Reserves must be established by physical exploration, and the orebody should be of sufficient size and grade to insure recovery of capital invested in mine purchase, development, and mill construction and to provide a reasonable profit. Determination of these economic factors is so complicated, and present costs of mine development and construction so great, that analysis can be made only by competent persons qualified by experience in this field. What rate for maximum efficiency? Unfortunately, even today mills are built before deposits have been adequately outlined, and there are rusting monuments to such folly in nearly every mining region. Also there is a tendency to be guided by the philosophy that "if a little is good, a lot is better," which leads to the conclusion that mining at a given rate and making so much per ton will yield a profit of so many dollars per day. Consequently, why not build a mill to treat twice as much per day and make twice as much money?

T HE engineer of today is by his training, by his traditions, and by the service which he must render, irrevocably committed to taking his part in public life along with the members of the older professions of ministry, medicine and law. Nevertheless, in comparison with these: three, so long recognized as the "learned professions-all three of which grew out of the functions of the priesthood-engineering in any modern sense of the word is a youthful profession indeed. So youthful is engineering in its present significance, that it may be said to date from the labors of John Smeaton, the lighthouse builder; of Simon Newcomen and James Watt, the inventors of the steam engine; and of George Stephenson, the inventor of the locomotive; at the dawn of the 19th century. Great works of an engineering character had, it is true, been executed long before this, but practically all of them had been rule-of-thumb enterprises, dependent upon a plethora of slave labor for their accomplishment. For illustration it is said that at Rio Tinto in the days of Hiram, king of Tyre, 40,000 men worked for a year to produce three tons of silver from the rich outcrop ore. Such an operation can scarcely be called an engineering enterprise, however, when we remember that a fourth of this number of men in these same mines, from which the richest ore was long ago extracted, produce at present over 100 tons of copper per day.

THE twenty-first birthday of the Rocky Mountain Club will be celebrated on April 11 by the Last Round-up; for, as announced at the annual meet-ing of the American Institute of Mining Engineers in February, the Club and the Institute have voted to con-solidate and formal approval by the court alone re-mains to be secured. The Rocky Mountain Club was organized some years since "to create and maintain good fellowship between the Rocky Mountain members and to further the in-terests of the Rocky Mountain States." From the first, mining men dominated it, as was natural in view of the prominence of mining in the Rocky Mountain region. A series of brilliant annual dinners were held and a site purchased for a clubhouse. A fund was raised to provide a home for the Club. Just as success was as-sured the war came and the members of the Club con-sidered it would be unpatriotic to spend money for such purpose at that time. In a spirit of patriotism the Club funds were devoted to war purposes, especially the Commission for Relief in Belgium and the caring for soldiers going to and returning from the front. So much of the money was used that at the end of the war the project for a clubhouse was out of the question with-out raising a new fund, and since 1923, the Club has been inactive. There is now in its treasury a substan-tial sum. The assets are for the most part the result of contributions made by W. B. Thompson, John Hays Hammond, and Edward H. Clark, all members of the Institute and all of whom wished to see these funds applied in a manner to leave some lasting memorial of the spirit which animated the founders and at the same time perform some useful function in the development of the region in which the Club's interest centered. It was thought that this could best be done through affilia-tion of the Club with the Institute and both organiza-tions have voted for the merger. The Club members not already in the Institute are to have the privilege of a special Rocky Mountain life membership, and the property of the Club is to be used to endow a Rocky Mountain Club fund to be used for purposes in accord with those of both the Institute and the Club and with especial reference to benefiting the Rocky Mountain region.

THE methods of mining talc are simple, and in western North Carolina are almost entirely by open cut and quarry. The larger part of the talc of this section lies in various-sized "veins" inclosed in quartzitic walls, the majority of which have by folding been thrown into a perpendicular position, or nearly so, and the exposed edges of which have been covered by debris from erosion of the mountain above. This covering of loose rocks and earth is from 5 to 25 ft. thick, and in most cases has to be removed because it is difficult to support. Sometimes the covering is heavy enough to "catch" and timber successfully, and in this case the talc can be worked out by the usual method of following the "vein," using stulls for holding up the walls until the vein is worked out, and then allowing the cut or drift to fall in. In some cases it proves more convenient to sink shafts and run drifts, following the talc "veins" until exhausted. The talc deposits of this section are badly broken and faulted both laterally and perpendicularly, and in some cases are found many feet below the level of drainage, necessitating pumping at considerable expense. . My own experience in mining talc has been that the chief point is to get a reliable "vein," and that then the mining is not as difficult, or any more so at least, than that of any common ore. If the. "veins" are pure talc it is simple; if the talc is admixed with foreign matter, such as tremolite in excess, or stains of iron or manganese, as is often the case, one had better abandon the deposit.
