The problems associated with the processing of the Tilden ore are very much representative of the problems encountered in plants processing fine grained magnetic and nonmagnetic iron ores. I would like to comment on some of the problems mentioned in Dr. Nummela'spaper and add to his list of research opportunities in the processing of iron ores. Grinding, the most important step in the processing of fine grained iron ores, is synonymous with liberation. One grinds to separate discrete grains of minerals from the gangue. By convention- al grinding in tumbling mills, mostly random size reduction is achieved with relatively little preferential liberation of minerals. Not only are discrete particles broken that should not be broken, but damage is done to the mineral surfaces. The combination of over- grinding and surface damage shows up in lower recovery figures and higher grinding costs. What is obviously needed is a better comminution process that is more discriminating and that would permit liberating mineral particles at the coarsest possible size with a minimum production of fines. Laboratory attempts at such preferential grinding have been quite successful, but technological difficulties have unfortunately prevented its use. Impact grinding is a good example of a new comminution process that has not been accepted because of equipment problems. Either these problems have to be solved or new comminution systems have to be developed to reduce grinding costs and improve liberation. In his paper Dr. Nummela mentions the change in the primary mill throughput that occurs during the winter months. Seasonal changes in the operation of the grinding circuit and other unit operations have been observed in many plants, and many explanations for this phenomenon have been advanced. ARIAL maps of prospective mineral-bearing territory have become almost indispensable in all the branches of exploration, and have proved particularly useful in the great oil area of the Southwest. About nine years ago aerial photographic mapping in this area was begun. The early product was lacking in scale accuracy and other control features, which limited its effective use. (written discussion?).¬A study of this paper raises a question on which it is hoped Mr. Stork will throw more light; that is, why does an oxygen content generated on poor melting conditions have a deleterious effect on the properties of the iron, while an oxygen content generated by the oxidation of steel scrap in the cupola is beneficial to the strength and chilling ability? In each case the oxygen is absorbed at the same time and place in the process of melting and it is by no means clear why the superiority of semisteel should be assigned solely to its oxygen absorption, when oxygen absorbed without the steel addition is admitted to be injurious. It is not apparent why oxygen caused to be absorbed by the steel addition should not pro-duce the effects of burning, sluggishness, slag inclusions, gas occlusions, etc., the same as oxygen absorbed by the iron in the cupola for any other reason, and it would seen that other factors to which he has not given sufficient emphasis must enter into the author's results. To an impartial reader of this paper, who was most favorably inclined toward J. E. Johnson, Jr.'s theory of the improvement of cast iron by oxygen, the discrepancy in the author's reasoning or statements is difficult to accept, and it is hoped that an explanation will appear in the final discussion.

I DESIRE to communicate to the Institute the results of a few analyses which bear on the condition of carbon in gray and white iron. These analyses were made in the course of an investigation, now in progress, of the chemical composition of "chilling" irons. It will be remembered that Bell says he found no material difference in the amount and condition of carbon in gray and white pig iron made at the Clarence furnace, in England, and he therefore refers the difference in color and appearance in these two varieties of iron to the size of the particles of graphite. I quote from his "Chemical Phenomena of Iron Smelting:" "The inference I would draw from the information afforded by these analyses is, that the condition of iron in respect to its so-called 'richness' is, within certain limits, entirely independent of its chemical constitution.. .. In the fluid state, I conceive the carbon, so taken up, confers upon the iron the property of fusion much below the temperature at which the pure metal melts, and the carbon itself may be regarded as dissolved in the iron. If, during the process of manufacture, the pig metal has been formed at a low temperature, consolidation, I imagine, takes place under such circumstances that the crystals are so minute, and the carbon which is separated assumes the uncombined or graphitic form in particles so minute as to be invisible, and, in consequence, the iron is white. If, on the other hand, the furnace is working at a very high temperature, the intensely heated iron crystallizes with large facets, upon which the extruded carbon assumes the condition of distinct plates or flakes. Should the temperature be less intense, these crystals are of smaller dimensions, and the separated carbon is less conspicuous, and, as the temperature of the furnace declines, the crystals decrease in size, as do the flakes of carbon, until both disappear in white iron.. .. Returning, then, to temperature as the cause of differences in quality of pig iron, the 'chilling' of gray metal, and its conversion into white, may be regarded as the effect of preventing, by rapid cooling, the formation

A. MALINOVSZKY,* Belleville, Ill. (written discussion?).-I have been very much interested in Mr. Dolman's paper. We all realize, I think, that this question of developing our home industries and support-ing the new industries which have developed during the great war is very important at present. Mr. Dolman has well shown the quantity and quality of the raw magnesite in the United States, and the commercial and industrial possibility of our home magnesite and I believe, with him, that our home industries should receive adequate protection. There are two reasons, however, for believing that this may be difficult. One reason is that much American capital is invested in the Austro-Hungarian magnesite industry. The raw magnesite can be quarried and prepared for the market in Austria with much cheaper labor expense than in the United States; large deposits which are very easy to quarry and good transportation facilities also contribute to the cheapness of production. The second reason is the old saying that the magnesite found in the United States is not of the same quality as the Austro-Hungarian mag-nesite; this I doubt. Even if the magnesite found here does not in a raw state equal the Austro-Hungarian, it can be synthetized so that the finished article will have the same properties as the Austro-Hun-garian finished magnesite refractory possesses. Thaw magnesite from Greece is not the same as the. Austro-Hungarian, but it has linen demon-strated that a good refractory can be made from the Greek product.

IN the metallographic examination of the alloys of iron and silicon, several investigators1-' have reported on the occurrence of an unusual type of etched structure, particularly in the alloys of higher silicon content. This, the so-called "barley shell" structure, has been observed with iron-silicon alloys over a wide range of silicon content, and under certain circumstances it can be seen upon the micro-sections of pure iron. The barley shell structure may be demonstrated most easily with iron-silicon alloys in the range 8 to 20 pct Si after etching in a hydrofluoric acid base etchant. Two etchants which produce the structure are: Corson's reagent, which is 2 parts hydrofluoric acid, 1 part nitric acid, and 2 parts glycerol; and picric acid reagent, which is 1 part hydrofluoric acid and 1 part saturated solution of picric acid in alcohol. Both when freshly prepared and used for etching commercial silicon-iron alloys containing 14 to 16 pct Si, invariably produce the barley shell structure shown in Fig. la. It is now well known that the barley shell structure is a pseudomorph and the true structure of an alloy of this composition consists of a single phase of silico-ferrite together with graphite as shown in Fig. lb. Lower silicon alloys and even pure electrolytic iron may also be etched in the above reagents to give the barley shell provided the etchant has been either: 1—Stored in contact with glass or silica, or 2—used previously for etching an iron containing silicon. Pure iron etched in perfectly pure hydrofluoric acid base etchants free from silicon contamination gives a normal structure free from the barley shells. Therefore, although the hydrofluoric acid in the reagent primarily is responsible for the barley shells, silicon, or its compounds, also must be present, either in the etching reagent or in the specimen. It was of considerable interest to the author to read the paper by Wachtell,? in which the barley shell etch was deliberately used for the identification of the boundaries of high and low silicon areas in diffusion experiments made upon laminate bars of compacted and sintered pure iron and ferrosili-con powders. This method of utilizing the barley shell etch is novel and in the hands of the investigator gave a useful differentiation between the high and low silicon areas in those specimens. For the reasons already given, however, the technique is not to be regarded as of universal application. Misleading results might be obtained, for example, if two or more specimens were etched in the same etchant. Fresh pure reagents only must be used each time. Provided this is done and the investigators are well aware of the limitations of the method, then the barley shell pseudomorph can be made of limited use in distinguishing between higher and lower silicon areas in a microspecimen of a ferrous material. The greatest of care must be exercised in the interpretation of the results which may be regarded as qualitative only and may, in fact, not be specific to silicon alloys.

Y.:—Mr. Hewett's paper is one of exceptional interest, because it not only adds an important contribution regarding one of the rarer, valuable elements, but also because it introduces compounds hitherto unknown and in associations no less novel. While we have occasionally discovered and recorded asphaltite in metalliferous deposits, for example in the Joplin and Granby districts, we have not seen a metallic ore in a deposit eesentially asphaltite. The source and method of introduction afford a subject well worth serious reflection.

ONE of the most neglected fields for physicochemical education as well as for research is that of high-temperature phenomena. Few universities or technical schools give instruction in the physical chemistry of substances at high temperatures. On the contrary such instruction is almost entirely confined to the region between the freezing and boiling points of water. This field should be extended to a much wider range of temperatures, both low and high. Such an extension is logical, sound, feasible, and practical.

MANY factors govern the value of dredging-ground, and much capital can be wasted by the mistaken policy of contracting for the purchase of property and the installation of machinery before a thorough, examination has been made. To the uninitiated investor the presence of gold is generally the criterion,, and very superficial evidence is necessary to satisfy him as to this point. He considers the comprehensive report of a competent engineer as a wasteful extravagance and cannot understand why the engineer requires so much time and money to ascertain the information on which to base his conclusions, when the promoter can furnish him such pleasing and satisfactory data with but little expenditure of time and money. The uninitiated investor will often optimistically risk capital for purchase and equipment, and not until the venture comes to grief does he learn that the conditions are wholly unsuited for dredging. In many instances, a short preliminary examination by a competent engineer would have disclosed these facts. The mere presence of gold is by no means sufficient; some of the other factors necessary to be ascertained in determining the value of placer-ground for dredging-purposes are : (1) character and distribution of gold, and how much can economically be recovered; (2) character of bedding underlying the gravel, its contour, and whether its gold can be recovered by ordinary dredging-operations; (3) area and depths of gravel, surface contour, over-burden, water-level, proportion of fine material and boulders, and the presence of any material which might interfere with the dredging-operations and the recovery of the gold; (4) water-supply, power available, labor, transportation, and supplies, and cost of these ; (5) climatic condi-tions; (6) title to property, cost and royalties, and legal obstacles to carrying on dredging-operations. In 1972, coal mine productivity was in steady decline and labor and maintenance costs were spiralling upward. Yet, despite this sad state of affairs, nowhere in the US at that time was there a comprehensive and coordinated coal research and development plan in the offing. The Bureau of Mines had not yet been charged with such a responsibility, and industry was content to rely on machinery manufacturers for innovations. It was during this period that Bethlehem Steel Corp. determined that a new approach to coal mining research was needed for the industry as well as for the company itself. After studying Bethlehem's own mining practices, the state-of-the-art of mining research elsewhere, and development work by manufacturers, a comprehensive research package was presented to company management in late 1972. The ideas and experience of many operating and management personnel in the company contributed to the formulation of the final plan as approved.

A pulse technique is described for the measurement of bar velocity. A low frequency sine wave pulse is used which allows the wave-length to become much larger than the lateral dimensions of the test specimen. The low frequency pulse method has been tested and compared with the resonant frequency method and the results show that both methods give, on the average, equivalent velocities.

For some time the writers have been compiling and analyzing statistics of consumption and production of petroleum, its products and related fuels, in order to arrive at a fairly accurate picture of the world-wide situation of the petroleum industry. In production, crude oil, natural gasoline, benzol and alcohol blended with motor fuel have been considered. In consumption not only refined products, but crude consumed as fuel, refinery losses, ships' bunkers and blended fuels have been taken into account to obtain a true balance between supply and demand. Statistics from practically every country and territory have been studied, and where actual figures were not available the estimates have been based on all the data available. The figures in Table 1 indicate that during the last five years the world's production has exceeded demand every year and that the aggregate difference is some 207,150,000 bbl. The supply in the United States exceeded consumption by 111,401,000 bbl. over the same five-year period and in 1931 and 1932 the demand exceeded supply, while outside the United States the excess of output over demand was 95,749,000 bbl. Table 2 combines the excess production in the United States with its favorable balance of exports over imports, showing that the United States has reduced its storage over the five years by about 136,-595,000 bbl., while in Table 3 it is shown that, including its excess of imports from the United States, the rest of the world has added 343,-745,000 bbl. to storage during the period in question, the greatest accumulation coming in 1934. Table 4 shows the world's consumption classified by countries according to the principal products. These tables also indicate that at the end of 1934 the statistical position of the petroleum industry outside the United States was decidedly unstable, a situation that probably will become more acute as a result of the added Iraq production; and that the present favorable statistical position of the industry in the United States, which is partly due to the excess of exports over imports, may be to some extent jeopardized by the unstable situation in the foreign market.

INTRODUCTION of bottom dump hauling units into the Ray, Ariz., stripping operation of the Isbell Construction Co., was motivated by several reasons, with what appears to be debatable results. The accepted theory of truck design for use in open-pit holds that end dump vehicles are the most adaptable for the work. But, because operations of the bottom dump, under certain construction and haulage conditions, proved economically feasible, the unit was put to work in the Ray copper pit. The decision to try bottom dump was reached after considerable observation of the unit in action on construction of earth filled dams, levees, airport construction and several other similar tasks. Basic tire design also motivated the choice. All things being equal, a vehicle running on low pressure single tires will outperform another operating on dual high pressure tires, providing load carrying capacities are the same. The investment required to equip a vehicle with four single tires to handle the same load as one with dual tires mounted on two axles and single front axles is about 60 pct greater. Thus, in order to reach the break even point on tire costs, single tires must operate 60 pct longer. Comparison is made with a truck outfitted with 10 16:00x25 tires. Two other factors were considered in selecting bottom dump trucks. It was felt the bottom dump principle would work well in dumping ore into a hopper where gate design fits this particular method. Also, with the absence of hydraulic dumping, ore pollution with oil is reduced. The mechanical simplicity of the unit also lent weight to its choice. Ordinary reasoning indicated maintenance costs would be low compared with other units carrying similar loads. The bottom dumping principle is not new. It dates back to the days when horses were used to haul the same kind of rig. The unit employed at Ray holds 25 cu yd struck measure, or approximately 42 short tons. Dumping is accomplished by releasing an air cylinder opening a dog holding the doors. Doors are closed by a cable system operating off a wheel wind deriving power by friction with the trailer tire. The unit is mounted on four 27.00x33 and two 14.00x24 tires on the front axle. The power unit is a 300 hp Cummins engine. Hydraulic power boosts the steering. A straight mechanical drive and friction clutch with 10 speeds is used. Conditions Not Ideal Top performance of the truck can be expected only under the conditions for which it was designed, in particular grades under 5 pct, handling fine material, and dumping where one thin layer can be placed on top of another. The machine will handle 42 tons per haul, operating at high speed, with only seconds used for dumping. On a 2 or 3 pct grade over a one mile haul,

IN spite of the war and the preoccupation of many physical metallurgists with work on secret or confidential problems, definite progress was made during 1944 in our understanding of the behavior of steel and of the effect of alloying elements. During the first two years of the war there was much concern over the possible unavailability of certain alloying elements; this period saw the development of the N.E. (National Emergency) steels. However, the measures taken eased the alloy situation and currently, highly practical problems under study are the graphitization of low-carbon steel and weld-cracking, while investigations of more theoretical interest have concerned hardenability, isothermal reactions, the effect of hydrogen and the interpretation of the notched-bar impact test.

FOR SOFT OR ANNEALED COPPER WIRE (B3-15) These specifications were originaly adopted by. the American Society for Testing Materials in 1912. They were prepared by a committee of the Society designated as Committee B-1 on Copper Wire. The committee consisted of eleven members; representatives of five manufacturers of -copper wire, of four manufacturers of electrical apparatus, and of two firms of consulting and contracting engineers. The members of the committee were designated by the officials of the companies to act as their representatives in the committee.

" If you could only get that motion into a machine," said a gentleman, as he watched the process of making a " van " on a shovel, and saw the copper roll up to the highest point, "it would beat the world for slime-dressing." This idea has led to many an effort to get into a machine that peculiar motion, called the " vanning motion;" and so cams, eccentrics, eccentric gears, levers, bell-cranks, togglejoints, links, springs, etc., have been brought into requisition, while a contribution has been laid upon all the conceivable motions, rolling, tumbling, swinging, jerking, tossing, dropping, tripping, intermittent, regular and irregular, or a combination of some of them, to which have been added percussion, concussion, and more discussion —all in a vain attempt to combine in a single machine the consecutive motions of the shovel, in washing, flowing, and tossing the van. The Patent Office Reports, and the various mills of the country, show, as a result of this, a lot of gimeracks, most of which never went beyond a first trial, finding their way to the scrap-heap. Others still running might as well be there; while some have considerable merit for dressing other and richer sands than copper. It does look tempting to see that clean edge of copper climbing up the shovel-blade; but those who have seen in it such visions of large fortunes have not considered the time it takes to make a van, compared with the small quantity treated upon the shovel; and this points to the reason for the failure of all that class of machines called " vanning machines," when used for dressing copper slimes, namely, a lack of capacity. The writer has come to this conclusion through an experience with the Rittinger side percussion-table of the most improved make, sent from Germany to the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, and with the Ellenbecker tables, used by the same company, both of which are good types of that class of machines. In both of these machines, the tables are suspendetl by rods which allow them to swing, and they can also be adjusted for the purpose of varying the inclination of the table. In the Rittinger machine, the motion of the table is at a right angle to the flow of the slime, being produced by a wiper-cam which throws the table against a spring, which throws it quickly back against a stop, the percussion throwing up the mineral.
