We wish to congratulate the authors on a fine presentation of a difficult and interesting problem. We fully support the findings that liquid or even mushy center reduction has no place in the production of quality steels. We also agree with the findings, or implications, that internal bar quality is not made in the rolling stands, but in the caster. This is the main reason why Inland caster exclusively uses the submerged casting technique after a few months of familiarization with open casting. The metallurgical advantages of combining in-line reduction with a caster are actually indirect. The use of submerged casting and refining powder permits casting of fine grained aluminum killed steels without resorting to expensive grain refiners and cuts down or eliminates reoxidation during casting. Immersion of a snorkel into a small mold may lead to several operating difficulties. Hence, the presence of in-line reduction enables the section to be cast into a large mold, at high output rates, while obtaining some product size flexibility. The capital and operating costs of a caster-- in-line mill are lower than those of the traditional installation with a separate reheating furnace and billet mill. Admittedly, in-line reduction represents an additional challenge to the steelmaker, maintenance man, and metallurgist.

Introduction The large reserve of fine grained oxidized iron-formation at the Tilden mine has been the object of research and development efforts to concentrate the iron oxides as far back as 1949. Due to the nonmagnetic nature of the ore and the fine grinding required to liberate the iron oxide minerals, this crude ore was not amenable to concentration by conventional methods. The iron oxides of the Tilden, ore body have a grain size of less than 25 microns and recovery of the finer, well-liberated iron oxides is essential. Conventional methods of desliming employing cyclones or thickeners were not feasible because of the excessive loss of iron oxides in the finer fractions. Development of selective flocculation-desliming was a key to commercialization of the process. Operations started in late 1974 with Algoma Steel Corp. Ltd., J & L Steel Corp., The Steel Company of Canada Ltd., Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., Sharon Steel Corp., and The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. as participants. Cleveland-Cliffs operates and manages the operation. Development of the Tilden Flowsheet The geology and ore reserves of the Tilden mine have been detailed in a paper by Villar and Dawe (1975). A joint program was undertaken in 1961 with the US Bureau of Mines in Minneapolis using the flowsheet developed by the Bureau employing the selective flocculation-desliming and calcium activated anionic silica flotation method (Frommer, et al, 1966; Frommer, 1964; Frommer, Wasson, and Veith, 1973). During this time, parallel testing at Cleveland-Cliffs Research Laboratory and Pilot Plant centered on the same type of desliming but was followed by the cationic flotation of silica with amine collectors (Columbo and Jacobs. 1976). The cationic silica flotation system was eventually chosen for its overall efficiency and simplicity. Regardless of the flotation method chosen, the technique of selective flocculation-desliming prior to flotation is the key to the success of the process. The flowsheet is described in detail by Villar and Dawe (1975). [Figure 1] shows a simplified one-line flowsheet of the Tilden concentrator. A total tailings thickener has been added to the original flowsheet and was placed in operation in 1978. The total-tailings thickener overflow reports to the reuse water pond and the underflow is pumped approximately 8 km (5 miles) to a storage basin. A flowsheet of the reuse water system is shown in [Fig. 2]. Selective Flocculation-Desliming Data have been published on the mechanisms and factors affecting selective flocculation in iron oxide-silica systems. The intent of this paper is not to discuss the theoretical aspects of selective flocculation, but rather to present experience gained from the commercial Tilden operation and from bench and pilot plant testing of fine-grained oxidized iron ores. From the bench and pilot plant testing prior to plant startup, certain reagent combinations and rates for the commercial Tilden plant were established. In the experience gained from three years of plant operation at Tilden, some of these reagent dosage rates have required significant adjustments due to changes in reuse water quality and to meet the requirements of varying ore types. Reuse Water The process water quality is a major concern at the Tilden mine and is constantly being monitored for selected chemical and physical characteristics. This monitoring has continued on a regular basis in order to gain a more thorough understanding of the interactions taking place in a dynamic water system and particularly as water quality is influenced by seasonal variations. Control of the reuse water chemistry is essential to the Tilden process both in the selective flocculation-desliming and flotation stages of concentration. With roughly 75% of the reuse water used in grinding-desliming operations, it is readily apparent that the biggest "reagent" in the selective flocculation-desliming process is water. Not enough can be said about the close control that must be exercised on the overall reuse water system. Control of the chemical treatment of the feed to the total tailings thickener is of utmost importance in order to produce a reuse water for the concentrator that is compatible with all stages of the concentrating process. There are many analyses made which aid in judging the quality of the water. Some of these are shown in [Table 1]. Five are particularly important and are monitored daily so that reagent adjustments can be made as required: suspended solids, calcium hardness, pH, dissolved silica concentration and temperature.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that to some extent mercury may be substituted for cadmium. Whether its use is justified cannot be stated at this time. Most of the authors' work has indicated that the addition of mercury to alloys of cadmium and nickel detracts from their desirable physical properties; but this work has not been extended to cover service tests, which might reveal that the addition of low percentages of mercury to the cadmium-base alloys would improve their performance. The results of tests made by the authors are therefore briefly summarized for this paper. Table 1 gives the proportions of the metals used in preparing the alloys. After preparation of these alloys, th composition was checked by chemical analysis. Particular care taken to ensure that the nickel content did not vary appreciably from 1 per cent.

As a service to its readers, MINING ENGINEERING is publishing the mineral industry portion of the 1957 list of Accredited Undergraduate Engineering Curricula in the United States. This list, revised annually, is issued by the Education Committee of the Engineers Council for Professional Development, and covers all phases of engineering education. The AIME is actively represented on ECPD, which was jointly organized by the Founder Societies and various other groups interested in the professional recognition of engineers. ECPD is merely authorized by its constituent organizations to publish a list of accredited engineering curricula for use as desired by those agencies which require such a list. It has no authority to impose any restrictions or standardizations on schools. (Date following school refers to year of initial accrediting.)

RAPID progress has been made during the past year in the copper mills throughout the country. Particular efforts have been made to increase the fine-grinding efficiency by the installation of larger classifying units operating in closed circuit with ball mills, such as the 78-in. high-weir Akins installation at the Phelps Dodge plant at Ajo, Ariz.; also the Type "FX" Dorr classifiers of Nevada Consolidated at McGill. Nev. and the "FX" Dorr bowl classifier of the Braden Copper Co. in Chile. Some of the copper milling plants in the Southwest, such as Chino in New Mexico and Ray Con. in Arizona, have replaced rolls operating wet in their fine-grinding circuit by rod mills. At Hollinger primary rod mills were formerly used in open circuit followed by pebble mills in closed circuit with classifiers. They now have primary ball mills in closed circuit with large extra heavy classifiers and no secondary mills. This new installation is producing the same grinding on 5000 tons per day with a reduction in cost of nearly 4c. per ton. At the Braden plant, in Chile, short-head Symons crushers have replaced 54-in. rolls, thereby in- creasing crushing capacity with some saving in maintenance cost.

The primitive mode of mining clay by open workings, in which the overlying beds of earth (commonly termed the " bearing ") were removed, and the clay then dug out by sinking shallow pits, is still the prevalent and almost universal mode of extraction. This is particularly true of our cretaceous and tertiary clays, which are generally earthy in character, and but slightly covered by drift and alluvium. The most accessible beds in many of our clay districts have been worked out, and clay miners are compelled to search for new outcrops, or to remove thicker beds of top dirt or bearing. Under this stimulus subterranean working, or mining proper, has been suggested. A brief notice of this new mode, as employed by Mr. Otto Ernst, near the head of Chesquake's Creek, three miles south of South Amboy, New Jersey, is here presented for your consideration. The purposes of composition are various; one purpose, for instance, is to make a record for the writer's own use, as in a diary. That does not involve responsibility to others. There is also the writing meant to influence opinion-to be persuasive, and pleasing. With such writing we need not concern ourselves at this stage of our study. The prime purpose of technical writing is to be informative-to convey information; therefore it must" be clear beyond the chance of misunderstanding. Such clearness is impossible if meaningless or ill chosen, words are sprinkled through the text. Discard the trivial phrases that are constantly at your elbow. Brush aside a host of vapid superlatives. Metternich exclaimed:' "The superla¬tive is the mark of fools". It is a false emphasis, like the underlining in a school-girl's letter. For example, the little word `very' can be deleted nine times out of ten; it is an impediment to terse and perspicuous writing, as 'the multitudinous hand-baggage of the British tourist is to his travel. 'Very' supposes comparison. A mine with a 1000-ft. shaft is very deep to the scribe who writes from the Joplin district', in Missouri, but it seems a shallow hole to a man living at Calumet, Michigan. A vein that is 10 feet across may be considered very wide at Cripple Creek, Colorado, but it is only a `stringer' to the miner at the Homestake, in South Dakota. Ore assaying $20 in gold is very rich at Juneau, Alaska, where .10,000 tons of $1 ore is crushed daily, but it is relatively low-grade to the pocket-miner at Alleghany, in California. It is all a matter of comparison; unless the reader knows your standards of depth, width, or richness, your `very' has no significance. "Where erosion was very rapid or oxidation very shallow"

To know the rate of decline of oil wells is very important, yet ordinarily we are prevented from getting this rate because the oil from several wells is put into one or a few tanks as soon as the wells have been connected to the power. The object of doing this is economy of tanks, pipes, labor and accounting. FIG. 1. But we are making a great sacrifice for this small economy. The advantages of the individual records are that we would know better: 1. When the well has ceased to be profitable. 2. When a well has gotten into bad condition. 3. The real record of the yield per acre and the rate of decline of the wells. The lease total is too mixed as to age of the wells for existing records to have much significance. To obtain such individual well records and more accurate logs are the great desiderata of satisfactory management of oil properties. 4. Which wells show the slowest decline-information which is valuable in locating new wells or purchasing adjoining leases.

It is now generally agreed that most metals have been brought to the surface of the earth by volcanic agencies. The question as to how these metals came from the volcanic matrix to the mineral deposit has been often discussed. It might be useful to give more serious consideration to the ultimate origin of the volcanic material. It is possible that some light might thus be shed on the persistent associations of some metals with certain particular kinds of rocks. For example, the very general association of gold with acid types of igneous rocks, of tin with granites or quartz-felsites, of certain types of deep-seated copper-deposits with magnesian eruptives, and so on. One interesting question is as to whether the metals brought near the surface by volcanic agencies appear here for the first time, or whether they came from the central core of the earth. The interior of the earth is, without doubt, much more highly metallic than the crust, and so the core is often thought to be the origin of many of the metals which are uncovered by man. The Differentiation Theory.—Although a great many theories bearing upon these matters have been discussed,' the only one now considered as worthy of much consideration among American geologists is the " Theory of Differentiation of Igneous Magmas."2 According to this theory, lakes of molten magma are supposed to exist very far down beneath the earth's surface. In these lakes a process of differentiation is supposed to be going on whereby the liquid magma is split up into two or more liquid phases. Each of these phases is supposed to take with it the metallic constituents for which it has the greatest affinity.

EVERY dry thing that burns easily and multiplies or maintains fire by its own intrinsic nature can be put into an incendiary composition and various effects are produced. Some of these things are mineral combinations, like sulphur or its oil; some others, [163v] hot, dry, and subtle substances, like saltpeter; and some are. unctuous things, like fats and oils of any kind; while some serve because of dryness, like pith and wood. Some of these things are natural and some artificial But now I set aside the search for these differences in their composition. This is what I have found among all the ancient and modern things that I have been able to seek, and first, back in the time of Alexander the Great. Marcus Graecus, who was perhaps the inventor or a great experimenter and practicer of such things, writes of many of them. I have chosen some among these, and one* is this: In order to make it, he took Grecian pitch, alchitran, live sulphur, tartar, sarcocolla, niter, and petroleum oil, one part of each, and, in addition, a double amount of quicklime. He mixed it all with oil of egg yolks. Having put it in a well-covered and closed vessel of glass or glazed earthenware under warm manure, he left it for a month. Then, having liquefied it over a slow fire, always keeping the vessel well closed, he finally put this liquor in hollow sticks, in little pots, or in vessels expressly made, all with a little fuse fitted in the middle. If I should have to do this, I would say that a little gunpowder should be put in, which should give beginning to the fire so that it would ignite more easily. I have also found that another fire is made. For this sulphur is taken, or oil of sulphur if it is possible to obtain, petroleum oil or some rock oil, juniper oil, very well-refined saltpeter, and for one part of each of these five parts of asphalt; in addition, take goose or duck fat, pure black pitch, varnish, pulverized dove's dung, and enough aqua vitae to cover all the aforesaid things.. In a recent article Heckler, Elias, and woods1 have described an automatic computer technique for plotting of pole figures. To anyone who has constructed pole figures manually from raw X-ray data, the development of computer plotting techniques has been a very welcome development. The purpose of the present note is to describe an alternative computer plotting method which, if somewhat less precise than the method described by Heckler et al., has the advantages of being faster and of not requiring the availability of a plotter. The plot is made directly by the printer of the terminal system and, by its nature, has a good deal of visual impact. Each character of output symbolizes a level of intensity. For example the numerals 1 to 9 might represent intensities referred to some reference obtained from a randomly oriented sample. Should more levels be required (this is seldom necessary) alphabetic or other characters may be used in addition. When these are arranged in the proper fashion, the result is a pole figure such as is shown in Fig. 1. It is the purpose of the computer program to transform the data and carry out the arrangement in a suitable manner. The computation is carried out on a line by line basis in order to reduce the amount of storage required and thus keep the program "small". It is, thereby, well within the limitations of the time-sharing systems which are becoming increasingly available. The inaccuracies introduced are slight and the plot can easily be made as precise as the technique used to collect the data. Comparison of pole figures produced by this method with those constructed manually shows a high degree of equivalence. To the present, the technique has been applied to reflected X-ray data only. X-ray data are collected in a manner identical to that described by Heckler et al. That is, as the goniometer rotates the specimen, a series of counts, accumulated over a preset time, is recorded. The method by which the proper symbol, representing an intensity level, is assigned to each print position is up to the ingenuity of the programmer. Perhaps the simplest method is to section the stereograph in the fashion of a polar net, and to assign all print positions lying within each segment a symbol representing the level of intensity recorded at the data point nearest to the center of the segment, see Fig. 2. The number and arrangement of the segments are selected to conform more or less with the number of accumulated counts and the geometry of the goniometer path used to collect them. Since the angular distance between accumulated counts is usually not infinitely controllable, it is impossible to locate one reading within each segment and, at the same time, maintain symmetry in the sectioning of the stereograph. This latter requirement is essential to keep the computer program simple and flexible. A background of the kaolin mineral and known means of prospecting this mineral are presented. Common analytical methods are discussed with special emphasis on those in use today.

ON behalf of the Regents and the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the National Museum; but it is to your own museum, since it belongs to you in common with all the people of the country. Still young in a life which has been beset with many difficulties, it has gathered strength and attained a growth quite unprecedented. In fact, it is this very growth which has been the chief cause of trouble, always leading far and away beyond the capacity for storage ; and to-day there is nearly as much material contained in outside buildings as is displayed in this one. You will, accordingly, find the collections crowded, the cases so close together that their contents are often difficult to view, and the arrangement generally lacking symmetry. You may, therefore, be inclined to regard us as poor custodians of the collections of a great nation, but I beg you to withhold your judgment for a while. From the beginning there has been abundant zeal and activity and a proper direction of affairs, but space and money have been lacking. There is now a prospect of better times. All about you here is a beautiful park, but without. a covering it is not adapted to museum purposes. Upon it, however, a new large building is going up, so extensive in its dimensions that technology can soon be given a fitting home, thus realizing one of the earliest aspirations of the Regents. Some sixty-five years ago the extensive returns of specimens from the famous Wilkes Exploring Expedition around the world began to reach Washington, where they were deposited in the Patent Office Building, and formed practically the first of the National Collections. THE controversy regarding the ,'probable future of the Mexican oil fields, and its relation to the oil industry of the United States, has led to the preparation of this paper. As has been predicted by several writers in recent papers, certain of the producing areas in the so-called "southern fields" in the Tampico Embayment have only a limited oil reserve. These areas are being pulled on by every pipe line in that region, and the length of time that they will continue to produce is a direct factor of the daily oil shipments of these companies. However, this is not the whole story, and in the following paragraphs an attempt will be made to show that the life of Mexican oil production will be a long one, and Mexican oil will continue to be a large factor n the market for an indefinite time after the areas mentioned above have been drained. The past and present producing fields will be discussed separately, in order-to establish a basis for comparison, the ,only method by which underground reserves 'can be estimated in these fields.

INTRODUCTION At the point a company decides to begin mine development and wishes to convince lending institutions that the proposed operation will return their borrowed funds, plus interest, over the terms of the loan, communications between lender and borrower are crucial. The importance of the mine feasibility presentation should not be underplayed, especially as new projects continue to increase in size, complexity, and cost. While the content and emphasis of a report to the lender will vary according to the particular project and type of debt financing sought, there is a general base of information upon which all such studies are built. THE PROJECT'S TECHNICAL ASPECTS Here, the object is to satisfy the lender that he will not be unduly exposed to technical risks as a result of the physical scope of the project. Reserves The feasibility report submitted to financial institutions should include an adequate description of the geologic setting, mineralogy, ore types, and reserves broken down into such recognized categories as proven/probable/possible or measured/indicated/inferred. Rather than a bald statement of reserves, lenders prefer to have detailed information on: History of exploration Drilling, both percussion and core, with core recovery, drill hole spacing, analyses, and continuity of mineralization Bulk sampling, with core assay comparisons Overburden, with stripping ratios Specific methodology of reserve calculation, and Geologic reserves vs. mineable reserves. As a rule of thumb, a lender would prefer to see that reserves in the proven class alone are sufficient to support operations at the design rates until the borrowed funds are repaid. (See also Schreiber above in this Chapter.) Mining The rationale for adoption of a particular mining technique should be presented as well as descriptions and justifications for: Preproduction development Preliminary mine plan, with forecasts of grades and material movements Geotechnical test work which influenced decisions Mining recoveries and efficiencies Major equipment, with type, model, rating life, spares, replacement schedules, utilization, and productivity Manpower requirements and work schedules Design assumptions Ore stockpiling and blending Environmental requirements, and Waste disposal Processing If a new ore body is to be developed or a new process used, it is important to provide details of test work, scale up, and extrapolation factors. A basic process description with a summary of the studies which justify the intended processing route should be included with the following data:

BECAUSE you cannot always proceed by the ordinary pathway since you sometimes find yourself in a place where you cannot have all that you might need or wish, it often happens that it is necessary to know how to recognize and understand your materials well, in addition to having them well disposed, and to know how to use your, ingenuity in arranging a mould., Furthermore, things have a great diversity among themselves, and it is not possible to give a particular rule for all. But if you have a certain broad fundamental knowledge when you have need of many things, the ingenuity awakens and supplies its needs by imitation. Now, because I have thought that you had not hitherto had the slightest shadow of knowledge of what I have described in this treatise of mine, I have expanded and narrated things in greater detail than perhaps I might have done. For this reason I have also decided that I wish to tell you of several methods that can be used if you wish to mould, especially in making an intaglio* for a relief, t or in making another intaglio in bronze from either an intaglio or a relief. And I will tell how every relief reduces, itself from convex to concave and also how the relief is made from the intaglio. These works are first made of plaster or pastes or some other liquid thing that is soft when moulded and becomes hard either by drying out with heat or by shrinking with cold, such as tragacanth, plaster of Paris, sulphur, lead, wax, or similar things. And, in conclusion, we describe the method of making an intaglio from a solid. In making an intaglio you must first consider whether it is a large or small thing, figure or foliage, whether it is in demi- or bas-relief, and whether it is a thing that projects from the mould wholly or in part.
