The market for Pennsylvania grade showed a drop both in demand and in prices, which reacted unfavorably on New York oil production, all of which comes under that classification. The output for the year in New York amounted to 5,045,200 bbl. The production in 1937 was 5,478,000 bbl., the largest in any year for the last half century or more. Falling prices, of course, affected new drilling. They declined from $2.20 a barrel, which was posted at the start, to $1.68 in the final months of 1938. With this came a reduction in the amount of oil that would be accepted by the refineries operating in the New York fields. Conditions therefore have combined to halt, at least temporarily, the growth of oil production in the state, which had experienced a steady gain for the last 15 years or more, the yield having risen from less than 1,000,000 bbl. to the round total of 5,500,000 bbl. in 1937. Practically all the oil now obtained is from old, developed fields. No new pools have been found in the last quarter of a century or more. The larger share comes from flooding the sands. Although there are many wells that still produce without the aid of the water drive, they are small and for the most part are pumped periodically. Of late, new drilling has been restricted mainly to that required to maintain existing flood projects. Because of the high initial cost and time required to put a flood into production, the depressed condition of the market has been a serious handicap financially, and, further, has been an unfavorable influence on the planning of operations to secure the maximum recovery of the oil. Unless market conditions improve, it is certain that the effects will be shown in the yield for some time to come. Gas Developments Drilling was active in the southwestern area, chiefly in Allegany and Steuben Counties, and some notable wells were brought in that tapped the Oriskany sandstone. Altogether 42 holes were put down in the two counties, of which 31 were listed as producers and 11 were dry. The new wells gave an initial daily flow of 239,000 M cu. ft. At the close of

Attempts to locate domestic supplies of sillimanite have been unsuccessful until recently. This paper describes recent discoveries of sil-limonite-bearing schists in the Southeastern States, with emphasis on geology of the deposits, mineral composition, origin, and reserves. Statements concerning possible methods of mining, milling, and utilization of sillimanite are given. Results from refractory tests on a laboratory scale are summarized. SINCE 1917, when synthetic mullite was first used in spark plug porcelains, there has been a continued search for natural sillimanite. During the recent war this search was intensified, not only for sillimanite but also for any materials which could be used satisfactorily as a substitute for the imported kyanite from India. The Indian massive kya-nite does not decrepitate during calcination as does our domestic bladed kyanite, thus a coarse grog can be obtained from it. Some of the most promising domestic materials suited for high temperatures are limited in quantity. Massive topaz from Chesterfield County, S. C., showed promise of possessing desirable refractory properties; but the action of combined fluorine, liberated during calcination, upon equipment and surroundings, as well as a limited supply of ore and the presence of impurities discouraged its use. Residual lumps and boulders of massive kyanite, similar to the material imported from India, occur in Georgia. This material, like the massive topaz, is of limited quantity. Andalusite from California and dumortierite from Nevada are satisfactory high-temperature refractory materials. Their uses have been restricted to specialized products since the location and character of the deposits are such that large production is impractical. Sillimanite, like kyanite and andalusite, has the theoretical chemical composition of Al2SiO5. It has a hardness of 6 to 7; vitreous, silky to subadamantine luster; specific gravity of 3.2 to 3.3; and is gray to bluish gray in color. Under the binocular microscope, the crystals are transparent. The mineral may occur as dense, fibrous mats (fibrolite) composed of fibrous, sometimes radiating hair-like crystals in schist which are associated with igneous intrusions. Deposits of this type have widespread distribution, but none discovered to date appears to have commercial possibilities. Sillimanite also occurs as bundles of crystals disseminated in biotite schist, as noted in the Hart-Elbert-Madison County, Ga., area and in some of the South Carolina and North Carolina deposits. This type of material has been called prismatic sillimanite by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Deposits of this variety appear to offer commercial possibilities. When heated above 1650°C, sillimanite expands about 6.5 pct and is converted into a mixture of mullite (3Al2O3 . SiO2) and vitreous silica. This is a stable mixture which has a specific gravity of about 3.15. General Geology: Sillimanite (fibrolite) is a mineral common to the pre-Cambrian metasedi-ments of the Southeast. It occurs throughout the crystalline schists which lie between the Fall Line on the southeast and the established Paleozoic rocks on the northwest (fig. 1). Complexity of Rock-Fractures. - The strains to which rocks have been subjected are manifestly very complex, and it is entirely safe to presume that every possible node of deformation and rupture is exemplified. The most superficial inspection of any ordinary mountain region is sufficient to assure the observer that the rocks have been pressed, stretched, bent, buckled, twisted, and shorn. The study of torsional rupture cannot fail, therefore, to throw light on geological phenomena. The question is, how areas which have been broken in this manner are to be distinguished from those which have yielded to other systems of forces. Phenomena of Joints. - It is well known that a large part of the more homogeneous rocks and some very heterogeneous rocks are intersected by partings, often called joints. These partings are frequently flat surfaces, even when seen in very large exposures, but are sometimes surfaces of moderate single or double curvature. Joints usually occur in groups, in each of which the several partings are parallel to one another, and several such groups often intersect the same rock-mass. In such cases the different systems make large angles with one another. Nearly all students of the subject of jointing have reached the conclusion that joints are faulted surfaces, the dislocations usually being of small amplitude; and this conclusion receives abundant support from the study of thin sections under the microscope. It has thus been shown that much even of what would be regarded in I hand-specimens as mere slaty cleavage consists, in reality, of innumerable microscopic faults. For this reason, Mr. Daubrée rejects the term "joint," as failing to imply the existence of relative motion, and has introduced the terms “diaclase” and “paraclase” as substitutes.1

The performance of laboratory water floods is compared with the flooding behavior calculated by the Buckley-Leverett techniques from steady-state relative permeability-saturation relations. Both the steady-state and unsteady-state experiments were conducted on the same sand-packed column. Relative permeabilities were calculated by the Welge technique from the unsteady-state waterflooding displacement experiments and compared with those measured by steady-state techniques. An evaluation of the various calculation procedures was made. It was demonstrated that steady-state relative permeabilities could be used to calczcJate waterflood performance. INTRODUCTION To calculate the waterflooding behavior of a given reservoir, relative permeability-saturation relations of the reservoir rock are required. These relative permeabilities are commonly measured on core samples by steady-state experiments such as the Penn State technique.' The relative permeabilities obtained in steady-state experiments are calculated from oil and gas flow rates and pressure drops measured under conditions of equilibrium distribution of oil and water in the pore spaces with slow approach to equilibrium. On the other hand, in water floods the water saturation at a given point changes rapidly with time as the flood front passes. Extensive research2 has shown that the steady-state relative permeabilities to oil and water are independent of the rate of flow and the fluid viscosities. Research has also demonstrated that the waterflooding performance of homogeneous sands uniformly contacted by water is independent of rate when capillary pressure gradients, which are important in short laboratory columns, are made negligible. However, there is little experimental data in the literature comparing relative permeabilities calculated from steady-state flow experiments with those calculated from flooding experiments. In this paper, the production data of two water floods and the relative permeabilities calculated from a series of steady-state experiments on an unconsolidated sand column are presented along with the comparisons calculated by the Buckley-Leverett and by the Welge techniques. The purpose of this study was to determine if steady-state relative permeabilities could be used to predict the waterflooding performance. This study also permitted an evaluation of the Buckley-Leverett and Welge calculation procedures and allowed an insight into the nature of microscopic displacement of oil by water. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The apparatus used in this investigation was a Lucite column 1 ft long and 11/2 in. in diameter. A drawing of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Six pressure taps were evenly spaced along the top of the column to measure the oil pressures. Three pressure taps fitted with small porous disks were spaced along the side of the column to measure water pressure. Water was admitted to the inflow face of the sand through a porous disk while oil was admitted through a hole in the porous disk and distributed to the face of the sand by grooves machined in the porous disk. Retainer screens of 325-mesh stainless steel were cemented over the inlet and outlet ports and the pressure taps to prevent loss of sand. The column was packed with a clean dry sand all of which was finer than 200 mesh. Next, the sand was saturated with a solution of 150,000 ppm sodium chloride solution. DURING the past decade, methods of producing bituminous coal in the State of Illinois, which ranks third in production among the states in which bituminous coal is mined, have undergone great changes. From less than one million tons in 1923, the strip-mine production has gradually increased to a high of 11,725,870 tons in 1937. From a negligible amount prior to 1927, the amount of coal mechanically loaded underground had increased to a high of 28,374,362 tons in 1937. The amount manually loaded in 1937 reached a low of 12,332,023 tons. In this same year, this state ranked first in strip-mine production, also in mechanically loaded production. For this reason a study of the influence of mechanization on location of production in Illinois may be helpful in anticipating what may happen in other producing states. The reason for the changes in methods lies in the differences in costs of production. The Bureau of Research and Statistics of the National Bituminous Coal Commission has made public the following costs of pro-duction by various methods in the State of Illinois (district 10) for the last nine months of 1937: all mines, $1.7602 per ton; strip mines, $1.4319; mechanical loading mines, $1.7457; hand loading mines, $2.1793; all underground mines, $1.8703. These are weighted averages for the entire district. Inasmuch as production in 1937 was reported from 58 counties scattered over two-thirds of the area of the state and from five different seams varying in thickness from less than 3 ft. to as much as 12 ft., it is apparent that the location of production must be influenced by the extent of mechanization possible in the various producing counties.

Mother Earth has had a long life extending over two billion years, during which time she has changed from a mass of incandescent gases to her present form, exhibiting a density stratification from the extremely tenuous gases of the stratosphere to the heavy central nickeliron core. Man is now mining all the principal divisions of Mother Earth except the centrosphere. Nitrogen, oxygen, neon, and other rarer gases are being recovered from the air; magnesium, bromium, potash, borates, and other salts from lakes and seas; brines, medicinal mineral waters, and great quantities of water for domestic and industrial uses from surface and subsurface reservoirs; and, from the rocky crust, many minerals and fuels for our present industrial civilization as well as plants and animals for food and shelter. Productivity of soil is influenced both positively and negatively by man. There is some cause to bewail what may be considered a wasteful influence of men on soil. The general situation is bad in spots but not hopeless. The passing of large areas of fertile land in some areas is merely to be noted and not to be mourned. These lands could not have been used without decrease in their fertility. The productivity factor is affected by human activities. Many soils in the eastern and southern states are far richer and more productive now than they were at any previous time. Arctic soils are not productive

THIS paper is presented with the idea of discussing only the basic open-hearth charge. The importance of the charging operation in producing steel is more clearly understood by dividing the principal components into four groups and discussing each separately, thereby becoming acquainted with what constitutes a charge. The significance of these components in the charge itself will then be taken up. Classification of the charge components is as follows: steel scrap; pig iron ; limestone ; refractories and coke. Steel Scarp The first component, steel scrap, according to size, analysis and cleanliness, may be classified as heavy, medium and light. Heavy melting scrap includes crop ends such as are produced in blooming ingots or the heavy crops from bar mills abovely in. in diameter; railroad scrap, which comprises rails, side-plates, car-frames, draw- bars, etc.; and such automobile forgings as axles, crank- shafts, gears, etc. This class of scrap should give a four-box charging-car (box dimension 24 by 18 by 72 in.) an average load of 10,000 to 20,000 lb.

The existence of local room-temperature plastic flow in germanium, which has been a subject of controversy for nearly two decades, has recently received renewed attention, albeit no more agreement than hitherto. Phenomenologically one major facet of the problem has been reduced to the question whether or not indentation can be effected in germanium without the introduction of cracks. That plastic flow can be induced at room temperature by fracture appears to have been rather convincingly demonstrated recently by Suzuki and Kamada and by Noble and Henisch.1 The literature contains both direct and incidental references to Vickers and Knoop indentations showing no cracks, within resolution of optical microscopy. Recently, however, following a controversy on the subject,2,3 johnson4 made a study of indentations produced by spherical indenters and concluded that these are accompanied by cracking. A specimen of Westerly granite was cyclically loaded to near failure at 50 MPa confining pressure. Holographic interferometry provided detailed measurements of localized surface deformations during loading and unloading. The data are consistent with deformation occurring primarily elastically at low differential stress; in conjunction with one incipient fault zone between approximately 350 and 520 MPa differential stress; and in conjunction with a second incipient fault zone above 580 MPa and/or during creep. During unloading only one fault zone, that which is active at the intermediate stress levels during loading, is seen to recede.

THE Pittsburgh seam in eastern Ohio has an average thickness of 5 ft and lies almost level Immediately above it is a layer of draw slate about 12 in thick, which normally has little structural strength, and is pulled down or allowed to fall as mining progresses Above the slate is a, variable thickness of roof coal, which in places will stand for the life of the working section and sometimes for the life of a secondary haulage entry The thickness of this roof coal varies from zero to 24 in In general, however, it does not provide a satisfactory roof, and usually is supported or pulled down About it is a mass of shale, soapstone and clay, of quite variable thickness, usually running from 5 to 8 ft and above this is a stratum of hard blue limestone, which provides a permanent roof Where entries are to be used for less than five years, the roof usually can be supported by wood or steel crossbars, but if they are to be used for a longer time, roof support is a serious problem All the roof material below the limestone disintegrates when exposed to air or moisture, and in a few years falls out between and over the crossbars Where this material is removed for a considerable height above the coal, the ribs scale and thus contribute to a further collapse of the roof As the height of the entry increases, cost of timbering is greatly increased, a problem that always is encountered where old entries are recovered or repaired METHODS During the last six years the Hanna Coal Co has used gunite for roof protection in mine entries Two general methods of guniting are practiced The first consists of the application of a I-in coating of unreinforced material This application does not provide any appreciable structural strength, and serves principally to protect the strata from exposure to air and moisture With the other method a coat at least 2 in thick is applied and provided with suitable reinforcing, which provides a structural strength proportional to the thickness of the coat and the reinforcing used The first method is adopted as a general practice, modified only where additional support is required "Gunite" is a mixture of cement, sand and water * The cement and sand are thoroughly mixed and screened before being fed into the hopper of a cement gun After the hopper lid is closed, compressed air is applied to force this dry mixture through the hose line to the nozzle, where the quantity of water needed to effect the proper hydration of the cement is added The coating is dense, and stronger than poured concrete

HAVING demonstrated to you above the practice of bringing silver to its ultimate fineness and perfection, it now remains for me to describe how the two kinds of metals that are found in the smelting product that you made from the ores are to be brought to their end: One is copper and the other lead, and perhaps a third is gold, if per-chance the silver that you refined in the cupeling hearth contained any. It would be almost impossible that it should not contain any, because either a little or a lot is almost always found as an admixed substance not only in silver but in. every one of the other metals as well. But in order to continue in sequence, you must suppose that there is some gold and that, of the two materials you have that I mentioned above and told you to save, one is the matte (calling it according to the usage of Germany, * since I do not know a more exact or better word for describing it to you) and the .other is the litharge that you took from the cupeling hearth. In addition, the hearths themselves are saturated and full of lead. If these things should remain in their present condition they would be useless bodies without any perfection. First, taking one of the three said parts, as a material of greater quantity and also as a thing that needs greater labor, and because, being reduced to the point I have told you with smelting and evaporation, it is nearer to its end, I shall tell you what must be done in order to bring it to pure copper. As I have told you, there are two materials on hand, one of which is the matte and the other the litharge. Each at first sight seems a half-burned thing; one has already been finished metal and the other is to be, but in my opinion the matte is nearer to its end than is the litharge because the latter has been dried by the power of the fire and re-formed from another body. Now leaving aside the discussion of this thing, after the matte has been well evaporated and reduced, it is taken and put on a forge. In front of the tuyère a receptacle is made of stones that neither calcine nor melt, or of coals and powdered clay, in the form of a little cradle that is longer than it is wide and not very deep. INTRODUCTION Pneumatic conveyance systems provide for material placement at high compaction rates in confined spaces. This method of conveyance provides proper roof support and ground stabilization important to underground mining activities. Today underground mining activities are conducted far differently than those of our ancestors, in that the reclamation process is the final step in any mining activity. Responsible mine owners are constantly seeking innovative methods to assist them in their reclamation procedures. During the last few years, particular attention has been paid to previously mined areas, as many of these abandoned areas lay open, imposing a constant threat to humans and animals. Considerable attention is being directed to applying proper methods for the filling and sealing of underground slopes, drifts, tunnels, and adits, because today we are experiencing the effects of past mining activities such as subsidence, acid mine water run-off, buring refuse piles, and underground mine fires. Furthermore humans and animals who have ventured into abandoned mine openings have died from exposure, suffocating gases, and mine collapse. This paper explains the method of pneumatically filling and sealing these openings and underground works by means of employing pneumatic equipment and proper backfill material together, thus achieving high material compaction and thereby providing the complete filling of the voids and alleviation of the mentioned dangers. NEUMATIC SYSTEMS The use of air to transport material is widely used; however, conveying abrasive material (e., rock, earth, and cement) requires certain pneumatic transport systems designed to handle the abrasiveness as well as the size of these materials. The Eby pneumatic transport sys tem, known as a Mobile Stower, in mounted on a 42-foot trailer pulled by a Kenwor th tractor. This arrangement allows for quick mobilization and project set-up. The pneumatic system, composed of several components assembled together, produces the volume and pressure of air required to transport the material. Knowledge of elevation, ambient temperature, and material composition at the locations to be backfilled play a big part in the design and useage of the pneumatic system. In this particular system design, material is placed by a front-end loader into an eight (8)-yard hopper which is located over a belt conveyor. The conveyor transports the material up to an air lock feeder, which is the metering devise used to feed the material into the Tee Injector located directly below. Air is supplied by a positive displacement blower which, in this instance, delivers up to 4400 CFM's of air at 8 to 12 PSI. Horse power requirements to drive the blower are met with the useage of either a diesel engine or an electric motor. A diesel engine enables the Mobile Stower to operate in remote areas. As the air flows through the upstream air piping, it passes through the Tee Injector and picks up the material and conveys it through the material conveyance pipe, (referred to as down-stream pipe), and out the placement nozzle. Depending upon material composition and the amount of tonnage to be moved, either mild carbon steel pipe or specially heat- treated hardened pipe is used for the material conveyance line. The entire pneumatic system is controlled from the operator's console. With the aid of instrumentation, only one person is required to operate the system. AS IN OTHER lines of engineering, progress in mining was influenced during 1931 by the world-wide economic depression. Low-metal prices ? resulted in active efforts to reduce production costs of base-metal mines. Probably the chief factors in reducing costs were the greater efficiency of labor, due to better relations between management and workmen, to the scarcity of jobs, reduced wages in most base-metal mines, and to lower overhead expenses secured by drastic economies. The use of mechanical equipment continued to increase, due to more efficient designs and a better practical understanding of the applicability of such equipment to requirements. With one exception, there were no startling innovations in stoping methods, but there was notable progress in the better adaptation of mining methods. In the United States, no large new base-metal or silver mines came into production during the year. At a number of mines, output was curtailed, and operations were discontinued at several important producers. On the other hand world-wide interest in gold was stimulated, as evidenced by increased output from producing mines, the reopening of some old properties, and intensive prospecting for new deposits. Mining methods at several gold mines in the United States and Canada were modified or changed to obtain a higher extraction of ore or to meet the need for additional support of the mine workings at depth. Permanent record of improvements in mining practices has been made during the year by the Federal Government; the industry thus has available for its use more detailed information than ever before. This work was done through cooperation of the mining companies and their representatives with the United States Bureau of Mines, whereby many papers descriptive of practices and costs at individual mines have been published. The Bureau's program of describing methods and costs at the more important mines (those producing in excess of $100,000 annually) is nearly completed, but papers will be issued concerning such additional mines as may possess particular interest because of novel methods, exceptional conditions or operating results, and others to supplement reports already issued. In this way, an interesting record of the results of changing conditions, or innovations in methods, will be made available.

This paper is written primarily as a discussion of Dr. W. P. Hase-man's paper on "A Theory of Well Spacing"' and presents briefly the production records, and intensity and rate of development in a large portion of the two principal producing sands in the Salt Creek field, Wyoming. The study includes 1350 wells, 160,000,000 bbl. production, well spacings varying from two to seven wells per 40 acres and early and late development. The general conclusions to be derived from this study are: 1. It is impossible to formulate a mathematical rule to apply to well spacing in the Salt Creek field. 2. Each tract is a separate problem. 3. Tracts first drilled produce the most oil, with many exceptions. 4. Initial production is not a reliable index to the relationship between past, current, or future production. 5. Wells which have produced the most oil in the past are not necessarily yielding the greatest current production nor will they yield the greatest future production. In fact, wells which have yielded the greatest past production will, in at least one-half the cases, make less oil currently or in the future than wells which have produced a smaller quantity of oil in the past. 6. The following is a safe rule to apply in well spacing in the Salt Creek field: (a) If the drilling of an additional well on a tract results in a sustained increased production, with prospects of making a profit, the tract is not overdeveloped and additional wells might be drilled. (b) If the drilling of an additional well does not effect a sustained increase in the production of a tract, the tract is fully developed. Second Wall Creek Sand The Second Wall Creek sand, covering 20,000 producing acres, is the principal producing horizon in the Salt Creek field; 1610 wells are producing at this time from this sand. A centennial meeting should be a time to take stock, to evaluate performance, to plan ahead. It is like a line in a televised commercial that goes, "You've come a long way to get where you've got to today." And no less should be said of the mining and energy industries. We have come a long way. A hundred years ago when AIME was founded, this country produced 23 million tons of bituminous coal and 5.2 million bbl of oil. The figures in 1970 were about 580 million tons of coal and 4.1 billion bbl of oil. In spite of such accomplishments, serious and compelling voices are heard in the land - doubting sincerity, questioning corporate structures, and challenging ethics. Those doubts are raised in one part of Washington at the same time that other sections of the Capitol are asking us to produce more energy in order to keep up with population growth, emerging nations, and new technologies. Those of us in the fuel or energy business frequently talk about the race for energy. The question is, can we develop enough energy fast enough to outdistance our present and increasing demands? Recently I heard of an incident that - in an odd way - caused me to think of the energy race. The incident involved a sky-diver who jumped from an airplane without a parachute. He was handed a chute in mid-air by a sky-diving companion. He put it on, opened it, and landed safely. In a way, it seems to me that our society is hurtling through space and that it needs some help from the energy industries to land safely. We're doing our best, but under some rather difficult conditions. Because of illegal strikes and work stoppages the coal parachute is snarled a bit. The cut in percentage depletion and other tax changes have put some holes in the oil parachute. And the gas ´'chute has been in trouble for some time because of unrealistic controls on producer prices. The irony of the situation is that some of the very people who have been taking potshots at the energy parachutes for a long time are the ones who are complaining loudest now because the 'chutes are not functioning the way they could. The safety of the entire nation can depend on the energy industries.

The purpose of this paper is to review and discuss some of the less evident and sometimes neglected opportunities for progressive developments in coal research. While a great deal of both promotional and technical information flows from some areas of coal research, output deficiencies in other areas of activity have reached a magnitude where important developments have been, and will increasingly be, unfavorably affected. These areas mainly involve coal mining and preparation. Some recommendations for the intensification of effort in these areas follow: Coal Mining While a huge tonnage of in-the-ground coal is assured, the location and distribution of these tonnages are becoming less favorable. The easy-to-mine coal which is located in or near population centers has been, or is being, mined. The vigor with which the less accessible reserves are recovered by the mining industry depends largely on the condition of the coal market at the time of mining. Hence, during a buyer's market, the commercially oriented mining industry is compelled to mine the easier and less costly reserves. Conversely, during a seller's market, the need to rapidly expand production results in more difficult mining and higher cost coal as few obstacles are encountered in finding markets. Hence, a seller's market tends to enhance the recovery of reserves while a buyer's market does not. One reason for today's fuel supply problems is that the Nation has recently emerged from a long-term coal buyer's market which lasted from about 1950 to 1968. During that period, national policy caused severe production cutbacks which regretably drove the industry to mining only the more accessible and better quality reserves. Often in order to remain in business, many hundreds of millions of tons of more difficult to mine reserves were abandoned and lost behind caved areas. Many of these reserves are close to population areas and would not have been lost in a more stable economic climate. It is difficult to fully account for all the impacts that were caused by the great buyer's market of the 1950s and 1960s. Besides the obvious loss of reserves that were once considered national wealth, the mining of better reserves tended to produce a generation of technically optimistic mining people. Mining people frequently became accustomed to looking at nothing less than outstanding mining conditions as a result of the declining market. Many are now and have long since received a re-education in the other half of mining. Going from many years of mining accessible, select and easy-to-win reserves, to the crash-driving of development entries in reserves that were considered unworthy of mining during 50s and 60s, frequently results in a much higher rate of encounter with in-seam and out-of-seam rock as well as with coal-deficient areas or "washouts." Intensive entry driving activity and compulsory non-selective mining in sometimes lean reserves were brought on by the need to rapidly open up new supplies of coal. Working under these requirements presents a continuing reminder that much more needs to be known about the relatively esoteric art of planning the best direction for driving entries in order to insure that a more consistent and greater supply of coal is available during early mine development. All of the preceding discussion tends to point to a need for a better estimate of those reserves of coal that are likely to be mined in the future. Such estimates should not be limited to the compilation of the amount of coal in the ground; but, where possible, should also include information concerning the capability for producing this coal. After all, a coal seam of ample thickness may have a degree of thickness variability, undulation, bad roof or floor, so as to make what would otherwise appear to be an attractive mining condition untenable. Underlying the problem involving the feasibility of producing known reserves is the need to develop better methods for the characterization of coal seams and associated lithotypes, based on drill core data, once at area is selected for mining. Reserves and their characterization involve aspects of exploration technology that are frequently considered mature. The resulting technological deficiencies may be the main reason why coal exploration frequently does not end with core drilling of a property, as it should, but extends into the mining operation during the driving of development entries. When exploration is extended to the driving of development entries, the near absence of integrated decision-making theory involving mining, geology, mathematics, and economics becomes, once again, all too painfully apparent and frequently results in very costly rationalizations. Hence, by the formal initiation of a concentrated program to combine the cyclical effects of economics with geology and mining, more relevant estimates of reserve distribution, tonnages, and production capability should be forthcoming. Moreover, a similar formal effort is needed to develop a combination of the most advanced concepts of mathematics, geology, and mining to better "see" coal seams as a means to favorably implement many long-range decisions involving mine safety and productivity. Much more applied research needs to be done on coal mining systems for mining in thin seams and/or under bad roof. Current difficulties in both of these areas at recently opened coal mines should provide a sobering glimpse into the future. Full-scale applied research, sponsored by appropriate federal agencies, is urgently needed on a scheme involving a new combination of established mining and preparation elements. The scheme may include: (1) a continuous mining machine remotely operated by a miner stationed at some distance behind the machine using a cord attached control box; (2) hydraulic transport of coal through pipes from the mining machine to a coarse refuse removal grid, crusher, and then on to portable concentrating equipment; (3) the hydraulic transport of clean coal out of the mine in pipes to the surface for thermal dewatering, if neces-

Placer dredging as we know it today, especially gold dredging, is an industry about 40 years old, dating from the beginning of this century, when a few mining men in California saw the possibilities in adapting earlier dredging methods to California placer fields in and immediately adjacent to streams. At first it was thought that dredges must be operated in existing stream beds, but experience soon pointed the way to dredging alluvial deposits of old stream beds, operating on landlocked dredging ponds. Within the first five or six years of modern dredging, experience was gained so rapidly that dredges to dig 60 ft. below water level were *designed and built. This depth was believed by many operators to be the maximum at which successful dredging could be carried on. Alluvial deposits of gold, suitable for dredging, were readily handled by equipment available and developed early in the industry's history. Much of the gravel was easily dug and if deposits were cemented, contained large boulders, or for some other reason could not be handled by a dredge, the ground was abandoned in favor of other deposits that could be handled easily. Many failures, adversely affecting the dredging industry, resulted from attempts at that time to extend the scope of placer dredging with equipment not suited to the formation being dredged. Dredging ground suited to early equipment was exhausted eventually, but many supposedly undredgeable alluvial fields containing gold in commercial quantities were found and became known to dredgemen. Improved equipment was needed to work deposits known to exist at great depths or associated with unusual obstructions. Operating companies looked to dredge manufacturers and metallurgists, particularly manganese-steel foundries, for improved designs and materials. Experience developed in California has spread throughout the world, and dredges of improved types have been adapted to the mining of platinum and tin as well as gold. Space will not permit a description of all the improvements in dredging since the early days, but a few of the recent developments are worthy of note, because they make possible the dredging of placer deposits of great depth, those having hard, irregular bedrock or containing large boulders in great quantities, and compacted or cemented gravel deposits. Deep Dredging At Hammonton, calif., yuba consolidated Gold Fields has, within= the past two years, built its dredge No. 20. The company has operated continuously in that field since 1904, digging successively at maximum depths of 60 ft., 80 ft., 112 ft., and now 124 ft. below water level. The first dredges were equipped with buckets of 6 and 7½-cu. ft. capacity; six dredges operating in the field today have 18-cu. ft. buckets, digging now 65 to 124 ft. below water level.
