MATERIAL and supply handling is a major problem at underground mines, especially to those operating through deep shafts with small compartments. Mechanization is necessary, yet in many cases cannot be utilized to fullest advantage owing to the limitations of existing plant design. In cases of this sort, improvisation is indicated and adds to the headaches and enjoyment which most mine operators get out of their work. Underground operations at the Copper Queen Branch are principally carried on through three vertical shafts: the Junction shaft, Campbell shaft and Cole shaft. Hoisting depths range from 1400 ft at the Cole through 2700 ft at the Junction to 2966 ft at the Campbell shaft. Men and supplies are moved through each of the shafts. Cage compartments are small requiring all material over 5 ft in length to be handled in an upright position on the cages.

This paper provides an understanding of the behavior and potential damage of homes resulting from sag-type mine subsidence. This is done with extensive research of numerous case histories in Illinois collected by the authors. The house response to subsidence-induced ground displacements are summarized and evaluated. A damage level criteria, specifically developed for residential structures, is presented based primarily on repair costs. Damage levels and the associated subsidence profile characteristics for each case history are compared.

UPON entering the Uranium Field it was a pleasant surprise to find almost absent two factors that have always been a problem to the lead-zinc miner: 1) milling cost per ton, and 2) transportation cost to the milling site. Another interesting condition was the fixed price for the product. Under such conditions it seems rather simple to calculate the economics of a mining venture when grade and tonnage of a uranium ore deposit is known. That is assuming, of course, there is a market for the ore. It has been quite generally assumed by operators that a guaranteed price carried with it a guaranteed market, a subject about which there has been a great deal of discussion in the past several months. The fixed price for uranium in crude ore, calculated to U3O8, varies only slightly in value per pound from rather low grade ore to rather high grade ore. It is by taking advantage of this slight variation in price per pound in certain ranges that miners and shippers may increase substantially the monthly returns from ore shipments.

If we assume that testing of the model started at time t1, that time t2 was the instant at which the elastic limit of the material was passed at the points of the maximum stress, and that at time t3 the failure of the model was completed as shown in the typical photograph (Fig. I), then actually the photograph shows the final results of what took place between time t2 and t3. By the principle of similitude all conclusions drawn from the behavior of the model were applicable and valid for actual mine roofs up to the time t2 after time t2 motions and friction came into play during the destruction of the model. The events between t2 and t3 and the photograph itself are not representative of the events expected in an actual mine roof unless corrections imposed by the principle of similitude are made. It can therefore be stated that all conclusions and observations of the author from the photographs are applicable only to his small-scale experiments and not to actual mine roofs. Without investigation of the true stresses or the combined maximum stress induced in the beds it has been assumed by the author that failure occurred solely due to bending stress caused by loading of the beds. (The author states that D was taken to be the theoretical strain given by elementary beam theory.) Fig. 1 shows that the beds were clamped together. This clamping was necessary to prevent slipping of the beds due to the horizontal shear. However, this clamping caused an uncontrolled and undertermined com-pressive stress S at the end of the beds, and this com-pressive stress caused a true tensile stress ?S (? PoiS-son ratio). This true tensile stress combined with the tensile stress produced at the end of the beds due to loading (fixed beam uniformly loaded), and the horizontal shear which is maximum at the end appears to be the most probable maximum stress produced in the beds. It is therefore evident that the author in performing this experiment has introduced stresses in the model not existing or dissimilar to actual mine roofs, and therefore his conclusions may be applicable to his small-scale experiments but inapplicable to actual mine roofs. Louis A. Panek (author's reply)—The discusser's difficulty is related to mechanics of materials rather than similitude. The effect of time did not enter into the tests in any way, being simply excluded from consideration in this study, because all quantitative results entering into the design equations are based on measured (between time t1 and time t2) bending strains that are well below the breaking strain (i.e., in the elastic range) for the model material. Time does not become a significant factor until the rock stress reaches 80 to 90 pct of the breaking stress." The objective of this investigation was not to predict that bolted roof will fail after time t, but was instead to develop a safe roof, that is, roof in which the bending strain is much less than (say less than 50 pct of) the breaking strain. The models tested to failure had no direct bearing on the design equations. Although for some rocks time may influence the magnitude of stress or strain at which fracture occurs, breaking stress or breaking strain values were not employed for any purpose in this investigation. Tests to failure were made only to obtain additional evidence regarding the behavior of the bolted laminae' as evinced by the locations of the cracks. As stated in the last paragraph of the paper, if one wishes to predict the time or stress conditions for which the roof will fail, additional information is required. The reason for clamping the laminae is to make them behave liked clamped beams, which closely approximate the clamped-plate condition of the actual mine roof beds (Ref. 5, p. 1; Ref. 6). The writer has previously demonstrated that the bending stresses induced by centrifugal loading in a clamped model beam are in agreement with those predicted by theory;' hence clamping has no significant effect on the bending ,trains measured during a test. Moreover, actual ,in, roof beds are likewise subject to a clamping effect due to weight of superincumbent strata carried by the pillars or ribs on each side of the opening. It is emphasized that this study was restricted to evaluating only the reinforcing effect produced by the bolts. Procedures employed in the experiments and in the data analysis were such as to deliberately exclude the effects of other factors. The objections offered are therefore invalid,

Chemical etching methods for the simultaneous revealing of the tellurium or selenium Phase and the chalcogenide grain boundaries of the alloy systems are given. A tellurium eutectic was found Present in zone-melted ingots. Similarly, a selenium monotectic was present in ingots. In general, the second phase (tellurium or seleniumn) occubies three different sites; viz., along the chalcogenide grain boundaries, as inclusions within the chalcogenide grain, and on the undersurface of the ingot. The detection limit for the tellurium phase is about 1 u in width. THERMOELECTRIC materials based on Group V (bismuth, antimony) and Group VI (selenium, tellurium) elements have aroused considerable interest in recent years in the practical application of thermoelectric cooling. In many cases, a small amount of excess tellurium (or selenium) was added to the material to optimize its thermoelectric properties. Then the question immediately arises as to the number of phases present in the resultant alloy. In the binary systems of Bi-Te, Sb-Te, and Bi-Se, the congruent melting compositions have been reported to be non-stoichiometric and are represented by Bi~Te respectively. It is to beexpected and known that Bi2Te3 and SbzTe3 crystallize from the melt with an excess of bismuth and antimony in the lattice and that tellurium forms a eutectic.~' The same could be assumed to take place in the pseudo binary systems of (Bi,Sb)zTe3 and Bi2(Se,Te)3 as well as in the system studiedby puotinen5 and other workers. Likewise, BiaSe3 crystallizes from the melt with an excess of bismuth in the lattice and selenium forms a monotectic.~ Therefore, in practice, alloys solidified from the melt often contain a second phase (tellurium or selenium) in one region or another of the solid mass even without the addition of excess tellurium (or selenium). ~u~~recht' studied the thermoelectric properties of (Bi,Sb)2Te3 alloys with excess tellurium and simultaneous additions of selenium. He mentioned that the materials show two phases because of the considerable excess of tellurium or selenium. However, he did not report as to how the tellurium or selenium phase was identified. It is generally believed that the presence of an excessive amount of tellurium or selenium phase in the alloy would adversely affect its thermoelectric properties and its uniformity. Consequently, there is a need for a simple method for the identification of the tellurium and selenium phase. The quantity of the second phase present is usually too small to be detected either by chemical analysis or by normal X-ray techniques. This investigation was therefore carried out, first, to devise a simple metallographic method for the identification of the tellurium or selenium phase coexisting with the chalcogenides and, second, to determine the distribution and specific location of the tellurium or selenium phase in the ingots. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting materials used for the alloy preparations were 99.999 pct pure bismuth, antimony, and tellurium and 99.997 pct pure selenium. The bismuth and antimony were obtained from Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada Ltd., while the selenium and tellurium were obtained from Canadian Copper Refiners Ltd. The tellurium was purified further in the laboratory by zone refining. The elements were pulverized in a stainless-steel pestle and mortar. The amounts for the desired composition were weighed out each time on an analytical balance to make up a 100-g sample. Then the sample was introduced into a Vycor ampule (19 by 150 mm), pumped down to a vacuum of 10"5 Torr for 15 min, and sealed off. The ampule was then heated in a horizontal resistance furnace at 800" to 900°C for about 20 hr. During this period the assembly was rocked back and forth several times to ensure good mixing. At the end of the heating period, the ampule was quenched in cold water and then transferred to the zone-melting apparatus described in a previous publications to grow large-size aligned polycrystals. The background and ring-heater temperatures were adjusted to make the freezing solid-liquid interface slightly convex to the liquid. The recorded temperature gradient in the vicinity of the freezing solid-liquid interface was around 15°C per cm. The ampule was moved horizontally at a speed varying from 0.4 to 2 cm per hr so that the ring heater would cover the whole ingot length from end to end. A single zone-melting pass was used for the Bi-Te, Sb-Te, and Bi-Sb-Te ingots. Two passes in the forward and reverse directions were carried out for the Bi-Se and Bi-Se-Te ingots. Six passes in the forward and reverse directions were performed for the Bi-Sb-Se-Te ingot. The zone-melted ingots were found to contain several large crystals, with their basal planes (0001) approximately parallel to the growth axis. Samples of bismuth and antimony tellurides coated with a layer of tellurium, and bismuth selenide coated with a layer of selenium, were prepared for comparison in phase identification. These coatings were made by dropping a piece of the zone-melted ingot into some molten tellurium or selenium under argon atmosphere and allowing them to cool slowly to room temperature. Alexander Parkes patented in England in 1851-52-53 a process for desilvering lead by means of zinc, making use of the greater affinity of silver for zinc than for lead, discovered by Karsten in 1842. The efforts in England to develop it commercially were not particularly successful, nor was the attempted introduction into the United States. This last was not surprising, as it was about the beginning of our Civil War, and at that period there was very little lead-bullion produced in the United States and there was no field for the process here. There was at that time on Staten Island an establishment that pattisonized lead, probably from Rossie, N. Y., and Chester, Pa., and possibly some Spanish lead, but the production of lead-bullion in the Far West had not yet begun. In 1864, Edward Balbach, of Newark, N. J., patented in this country a process for desilvering lead by means of zinc, and in 1867 Edward Balbach, Jr., patented a " movable black-lead retort with a neck, placed in a furnace," for the purpose of distilling the alloy of zinc, lead, and the precious metals. A brief comparison of the Parkes and the Balbach processes is interesting. The Parkes process as practiced in England consisted in stirring into silver-bearing lead, melted in a kettle, from 1 to 2 per cent. of zinc, cooling, skimming the alloy of lead, zinc, and silver that rose to the surface, liquating it in an iron retort, distilling the residual rich alloy in fire-clay retorts, thus regaining the zinc, and refining the desilvered lead at a low heat in a shallow cast-iron pan that formed the hearth of a reverbera-tory furnace. THE value of chemical research has been so thor¬oughly demonstrated in the last few decades that the general public has become "research-conscious" to an extent which allows the advertising agent and publicity man to make use of research as a selling point in his advertising campaigns. We thus see the advertisements of concerns in the most varied industries stressing the research which is back of their products. The reason for this "research-consciousness" of the general public. is primarily that the products of research have increasingly engaged public attention and have. revolutionized our daily life. When we. reverse the flight of .time and imagine ourselves-in the century previous to our own, we find that we are .without the automobile, the radio, the improved telephone and electric light, refrigerated transportation, the airplane, X-rays, and many other things now taken for granted. A generation ago we find gloomy prophets foretelling the certain over-population .of the world within a few decades and an insufficiency of food due to lack of the fixed nitrogen which is now so plentifully ours.

THIS paper briefly describes the general outline of cyaniding silver-ores in Mexico, with special reference to personal experiments made in the Temascaltepec district. The most important papers on the subject deal with cyaniding gold-silver-ores, the gold predominating in value, so that the treatment is nearly the same as for gold-ores, the losses of silver being considered of little importance. I describe here the treatment of silver-gold-ores containing very little gold, which is more general in Mexico than elsewhere. The cyanide treatment, which was so successfully applied to gold-ores, did not succeed immediately with silver-ores on account of their varying composition. Gold occurs in nature usually in the native state, while silver occurs generally in combination with sulphur (argentite), and various combinations of sulphur, antimony, and arsenic. In former times there was a complete difference in the treatment of gold-ores and silver-ores. Amalgamation, which was successful with gold-ores, was generally inadequate with silver-ores. The usual treatment in Mexico for silver was the patio process, the theory of which was satisfactorily explained only quite recently by Mr. Ortega and others. GENERAL OUTLINE OP THE CYANIDE TREATMENT. The general tendency of the present practice is to slime the silver-ore as much as possible, and in order to obtain a higher efficiency, with less loss of cyanide, and greater speed, the following lines are observed 1. Crushing by stamps with 30- or 40-mesh screens, then crushing by Huntington or Chilean mills, through 60- or 80-mesh screens. 2. Concentration upon vanners.

greatly restricted and every effort is being made to do away with it where possible, and to substitute a lead-base babbitt or a babbitt with 50 per cent,. tin. The amount of solder having the composition 50 lead, 50 tin, used by the Pennsylvania Lines East, during 1917, was approximately 100,000 lb., but there is reason to believe that a large portion of this can be replaced by a 60-lead, 40-tin solder with satisfactory results, and instructions have been issued to this effect. Inregard to the quantity of new tin used, it is not possible to give the amount, except approximately and from calculations based on the 1917 consumption of bearing metals by the Pennsylvania Lines East only, it is estimated that about 770,000 Ib. of new tin were required in a total of about 21,380,000 lb. of all kinds of bearing metals turned out by the foundry or purchased in the market. No change has been made in the specifications for bearing metals for some years, as the metals used have been satisfactory. A large proportion of the bearing metals are made up from old material re-melted and brought to standard composition by some addition of new metal, and every effort is being made to utilize old material to the best advantage and reduce the amount of new metal of all kinds purchased. For a number of years no tin has been used in the lining metal of either passenger or freight car journal-bearings, except such small amounts as come in from re-melting old linings. No change has been made in phosphor bronze used for rod bushings, as we should expect some trouble from bushings pounding out of shape if a phosphor bronze were used which contained less tin or more lead than the present specifications call for. In this, as well as in the case of all other bearing metals, we expect to use our utmost endeavors to economize and to substitute for tin wherever possible. The Tin-plate Industry D. M. Solder, bearing metals, bronzes, etc, used about 5,500,000 lb.; collapsible tubes a little more than 250,000 lb.; tin-foil about 500,000 lb.; and the tin- and terne-plate industry somewhat less than 5,000,000 Ib. At the present stage of geothermal technology and the still limited applications of geothermal energy, most of us consider any use of "things geothermal" to be something out of the ordinary. If in such a situation there can be a use of geothermal energy which is even more unusual, then the utilization of geothermal energy-or more precisely, geothermal heat--for the manufacture of salt is just such a use. This is the essence of investigations in the Fiji Islands, where experiments in the evaporation of seawater to product, salt have been conducted using geothermal heat emanating from the ground in an area of hot springs. The hot springs are located on the coast at Savusavu in a depression about GO ft wide. There are ten individual springs, but most of these are small and insignificant. The temperature of the water from these springs reaches 100°C.

Despite the uncertain political situation in Katanga, copper and cobalt mining and metallurgical operations of Union Miniere du Haut-Katanga were normal at the time of this writing. In fact operations continued normal after Congo independence on June 30, 1960, with copper and zinc production for that year being slightly higher than in 1959. United Nations military operations from September to December 1961 resulted in death, shutdowns and damage to company persons and installations. Nevertheless, results for that year were only slightly off normal production. Moise Tshombe delared Katanga a separate state after Congo independence. Although there has been tribal unrest, the new State has enjoyed relative calm and normal industry by comparison with other parts of the Congo as a result of the firm hand of Moise Tshombe's government and the continued presence of Belgian officials and technicians.

AT the meeting of the Institute in Easton, October, 1873, I made a communication on the Ore Knob copper mine, in Ashe County, North Carolina (Transactions, vol. ii, p. 123), in which I called attention to the chemical decomposition alike of the pyritous lode and the inclosing gneiss rock to a depth of 60 feet, by which the feldspar of the latter had been converted into clay, and the whole rock very much softened. Such a decomposition is well known to be almost universal in the crystalline rocks of the Appalachians south of the Potomac ; and if it is only seen in rare and exceptional cases farther to the northward, this, as I have elsewhere pointed out, is due to the fact that the decomposition began and ended in the ages anterior to the drift period, and that the decayed portions which still remained were at that time removed from the surface, except in some localities which were protected from the eroding agency. I have lately had an opportunity of studying a remarkable instance of this kind in an examination made last month for the corporators of the Hoosac Tunnel.* The locality is at the western base of Hoosac Mountain, the western slope of which rises rapidly 1300 feet above the town of North Adams, in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, itself 700 feet above the sea level. Through this mountain, as is well known, a tunnel for the Troy and Boston Railroad has lately been opened, a distance of 25,081 feet from east to west. The rock of the mountain consists of mica schist and micaceous gneiss, including in its western half a great mass of harder feldspathic and quartzose strata in part a granitoid gneiss, the strata for the most part dipping to the eastward with variable angles, but with occasional western dips, apparently due to inversion. The crystalline strata of the mountain crest and sides are in many places exposed, and present rounded surfaces, often deeply grooved and striated, but with no appearance of decay. At the western base of the mountain, however, the gneissic rock is in a state of complete decomposition, which was well displayed in opening the tunnel, which, for a distance of several hundred feet, was driven through highly inclined strata so much decomposed that they were excavated with pick and shovel, and without the aid of blast- * See, for a detailed account of this examination, Dr. Hunt's report, published by the General Court of Massachusetts in House Document No. 9, 1875.

AS thin most important and vital component of an airplane aluminum hay rapidly become the heart and tome- of the war program. Its production ham increased amt will continue to increase, in comparison with its pre-war position further than that of any of lie other important critical metals except magnesium. Compared with the 1939 production of tons of primary ingot coming from four plants, all owned by the Aluminum Company of America the 1942 figures are more than three timer as large. Including, recoverable scrap and contracted ingot from Canada the 191,, supply of aluminum for the United States will be over siren times dial of 1939- A substantial part of this increase has been achieved during the past year as total production in 1941 was only some 307,500 tons. During 1942 six great new ingot plants sponsored and owned by the Government have come into production and three others are nearing completion.

The Magnetic Storm Monitor is an instrument that continuously records variations in the earth's total magnetic field at a fixed location. It is intended for use in conjunction with airborne magnetometer surveys. There are stormy periods when changes in the earth's magnetic field are so violent that data obtained with airborne equipment would be of little value. The Monitor provides this information so that flights may be cancelled or terminated, thus eliminating useless flying. Moreover, when some unpredictable change in the earth's field occurs during an airborne survey, the Monitor record, showing a similar event, may serve to salvage the data.

The original basis for the search for oil in Great Britain was described last year.t During 1937 the exploratory drilling by the D'Arcy Exploration Company, Ltd. has been continued. Three wells have been completed in the south of England and a fourth is nearing completion. In addition, test wells are now being drilled in Scotland and East Yorkshire. Southern England The test well on the Portsdown structure, which at the end of 1936 was drilling in the Lower Lias at 5792 ft., entered the Triassic at 6540 ft. and was completed in that formation at a depth of 6556 ft., without encountering further indications of petroleum. The Henfield well encountered the Lias at a depth of approximately 4090 ft., and after drilling 800 ft. of an argillaceous development of that formation entered a series of marls, breccias and conglomeratic limestones of the Carboniferous. Drilling was suspended at a depth of 5105 ft., in the latter formation. The consistently impermeable nature of the strata encountered in the Portsdown and Henfield test wells focused attention on the desirability of obtaining shore-line conditions of the Jurassic. With this end in view the Kingsclere anticline, a few miles south of Newbury in Berkshire, was selected for a next test. The Kingsclere well has now reached a depth of 5032 ft. in the Lower Lias and has encountered a full development of the Jurassic. With the exception of the Portland sand, which has a slightly greater porosity, and the Corallian, in which relatively great thicknesses of impervious limestone were met, conditions of sedimentation have been found to be comparable with those of the earlier wells. Small traces of petroleum have been found in cuttings and cores, but formation tests carried out at frequent intervals have yielded no flow of oil. In order to test the Corallian, from which series an outcropping oil sand had been found, a test well was drilled in a near-by anticline at Poxwell in Dorset. The Bureau of Mines has pursued a program of research on mine illumination that has defined the coal miner's illumination needs. St. Joe Minerals Corporation, recognizing the need for improving the illumination of the working place in their mines, entered into a cooperative research agreement with the Bureau of Mines to utilize the Bureau’s expertise in this field. Some similarity in the environment, in which coal and hard rock miners work, has allowed the application of developed coal mine illumination technology and equipment to be utilized in hard rock, room and pillar mines.
